Google Maps Navigation? - Hero, G2 Touch General

Hi - I've been reading about how Google Maps Navigation has just been released into the market and does everything (and more) which a satnav will do, all for no money at all - but when I search my android market it isn't there? Any ideas where I might find this - it looks terrific?
I'm in the UK on Voda with a white, unlocked, Hero.
Many thanks!

You can't find it because its only released in the US for 1.6 Donut.

Tsk! Is the US-only thing important or should we Europeans be able to get it once we get the upgrade to 2.0? And thank you for your reply...

It's already been modified to work in Europe, I'm sure they're just finishing up support for the feature over here before releasing it officially.

Unfortunately, as you may know, HERO is currently running on Android 1.5 CupCake, but not on 1.6 Donut, nor on 2.0 Eclair ...
Which means that, even when it will have been officialy released in Europe, it won't work on our Hero's

Yes, but I believe I'm right in thinking that we are shortly to get an update to 1.6 Donut?

Nope, HTC are skipping 1.6 for the Hero and will eventually release 2.0
Waiting ....

not wanting to sound rude but have you read the above?

so since im running 1.5 it wont even show up in the market?

Correct.
Kinda what you would expect when people say it's out for 1.6 and 2.0 and discuss why it's not out for 1.5.

WIFI Proxy?

Is it possible to set-up proxy for wifi? at school we are using proxy to use the internet. i'm not a iphone fan but its really easy on the iphone and would like to know if it was possible with hero/android
if this is not possible will it come later to android?
Check this out:
http://code.google.com/p/proxysetting/
It appears to be an app that will do it for you. It might be on the market too, I haven't checked. Just did a quick google search and it was the first thing that came up.
Why isnt it build in? Will it be build in with later releases of android?
I will look at the link maybe i will find something great
That should do the trick, that is exactly what I'm searching for!!
I'll test it at work tomorrow and let you know if it worked, I allready set the proxy, really simple prog to work with. I REALLY hope it works.
Hmm, the programme doesnt do anything. Still cant connect to the internet. Anybody got other suggestions..?

Your phone may need to be rooted for this to work... that's just a shot in the dark. As soon as I get my Hero (yeah, I'm trolling the forums before Telus even has them in stock) that's the first thing I'm gonna do, but some people are more cautious, so it's up to you if you wanna bother rooting your phone on the off chance that it'll get the app I linked to work.
EDIT: My bad, if you check the "issues" page on the site, you'll see that it hasn't been updated to work on cupcake. :/
will there be proxy settings in donut?

It's hard to say. I found this "complete" list of donut features:
http://www.betanews.com/article/Android-Donut-SDK-released-Whats-new-inside/1253057624
I wouldn't be surprised if the inclusion of full VPN support also brought proxy settings with it, but it's hard to say.
Thnx for the article, its great.
Is the new version (donut) already released? Or when will that be?
Oh yeah, how will Hero users be able to work with the new version of android?
Because we got htc 'sense' above android, so I guess HTC also has to release a new version of the 'sense'??

Yes, donut was released on September 15th, but there are no phones that come with 1.6 on them. The CLIQ is supposed to be the first one, I think. Cupcake applications are expected to run on Donut, so I see no reason why a Hero update (both official and non-official) wouldn't be too far down the road.
I don't have a Hero yet, but I've been running Android on my Vogue for over a year now, and last week I actually ran a Donut build. It's very nice, although the vogue build is missing a lot of apps, like GMail, and contacts don't sync, so it's not really feasible for us to use until more development is done on it.
donut wasn't released but the SDK. with SDK can developers edit(if its needed) their programs to make it work in donut or just test it before the donut comes out. htc will make there sensui work in donut because it would be there shell for android and wanna us it with new htc android phones. but if it comes to hero i don't know i hope so or i will feel like i left behind.
sensui is nice but i think it slows down the phone but thats what i think. i would prefer the speed above sensui.

Yes and no... the SDK is what was officially released on the 15th yes, but google has been adding donut into the android source tree for a while now. The SDK includes a donut system image to run in the emulator, and which can also run on phones (as this is what I've run on my vogue) but of course is missing several google apps. The market and youtube are included though. The source for donut is all in the git tree along with cupcake and... 1.0, whatever its codename is. It's just up to phone manufacturers to take the source and build specific images for their devices at this point, although I'm sure google still has updates to add to it as well.

Will G1 go 2.0?

With all this talk about this phone has 2.0 and that phone getting 2.0, will it eventually become available for the G1 or is our hardware too outdated?
Officially or Unofficially yes.
I hope it does go 2.0. Though if not I do hope the maybe the cm roms that we are getting will have the bits and pieces. I have seen the vids and well tested the 2.0 software and for the most part I am excited. And since I am to poor to upgrade to any new phone plus I really do love my G1 all we can do is cross fingers. As for out dated I see this phone lasting a long time due to the great potention and centimental aspect that other G1 users have.
It will work. check Cyanogen's tweets on twitter or www.cyanogenmod.com
will just make 3wishes
1.I wish i have 2.0
2.I wish i have 2.0
3.I wish i have 2.0
DAMN!!! Now they got 2.1
stock users wont get it but as soon as Google releases the source tree u know cyan will start to merge the code
I was about to ask this same question. I want to get a new android device and can't decide whether to get another G1 or another device. I like my G1 but I definately want to see 2.0 and Google Maps Nav. Is it safe to buy a G1 and know I'll be able to use these down the road?
it really depends, the new google maps wil very much likely be merged into cyans code, but if you arent locked down with t-mobile a switch to verizon for the droid is worth some thought
Here in Austria T-Mobile officially confirmed that the G1 will get Android 2.0 (as the first phone here; we won't get the motorola sholes).

What gives you this idea? Cyan is no longer implementing any Google apps.. there may eventually be a 2.0 recovery image that is flashable on the G1 or some sort of recovery image with these new apps... but cyan is definitely not releasing google maps.. or any other new releases of google software in his roms..
I am not saying that they wont become available on the G1.. because I am about 99% confident that we will get the apps.. and we will get the 2.0... but im also about 100% positive we wont see those new apps in Cyans rom
(sorry for bein rude... it just gets old when people just blurt out stuff that doesnt make sense.... if you are at all familiar with xda.. and cyan.. and android.. then you know cyan can no longer distribute any google apps)

"Wir erwarten die Software noch für das vierte Quartal diesen Jahres" means that T-Mobile expect the 2.0 Update in the 4th quarter of this year.
I don't know why the google translation says that "noch" (which means something like yet) is "nor"...

This is assuming that the Australia HTC Dream is the same hardware as the T-Mobile G1.
They may do something like a hardware upgrade like they did with the HTC Sapphire/Magic/myTouch3G/Ion with the whole 32A/32B deal where the new Australian Dream may have more ROM/RAM than the G1... That would suck.

Well from what I’ve read Hero will also get 2.0. Meaning us G1 Hero flashers will get 2.0 sense.
I’ve been checking from time to time to see if anyone is working on it. I’m sure when it is dropped on hero it will be rommed and flashed quickly.

Yes, the same Article says that HTC is working on an 2.0 Update for the Hero (with HTC Sence, of course).
Haha, my bad guys. I obviously don't know what I'm talking about
I was just saying, I hadn't seen any evidence that showed that the AUSTRIA G1 had the same storage capacity as the USA one.

1.6 on hero

Been looking around to see if anyone has been put 1.6 on the hero, but so far i haven't found anything. Just wondering if its currently even possible. I hate the senseui, so if stock 1.6 is available on cdma hero would be great to know. Thanks in advance.
Ill do ya one better. We dont have 1.6 but we almost have a fully working 2.0
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=593620
I tried and built a 1.6 AOSP and it crashes and burns. The system_server process sigbus with a null pointer exception and crash/loops on my Sprint Hero when it tries to boot up.
Honestly, 1.6 and 2.0 seems "closer together", 1.5 to 1.6 is a much bigger jump. I think Google kinda messed up the versioning there. 1.6 should've been 2.0, and 2.0 be 2.1

Well HTC/Sprint is currently working on 2.1 for the Hero. So I seriously doubt that will happen. But you can always turn off Sense or build you own custom rom without Sense...
I could use any of the ones currently available , but from what ive been told, nothing will be completely compatible just yet. HTC just needs to get in gear, or hire some of the guys here lol. Also heard they got 2.1 running on droid and its amazing, so i guess im just patiently waiting....

No 2.2 as yet, but there may be one (or more!) very soon -- from China and/oe Japan. Whether they'll work on any/all the European Blades without any modification remains to be seen. But if you want 2.2, MoDaCo has a very usable Alpha 4 based on the pre-release Froyos.

We've had mixed messages from Orange about 2.2. Perhaps they'll go straight to 2.3, assuming they bother at all!
The only European provider that has indicated they'll soon be doing a 2.2 for their version of the Blade is the Greek one. But AFAIK it's not confirmed and it's vaguely coming "in the New Year".
