Sprint Hero reviews are out everywhere - Hero, G2 Touch General

See Engadget, Gizmodo, or any of your favorite gadget sites.
Many of the reviewers mentioned about speed and camera improvement over the European Hero. As we know, these are the two notable improvements brought about by the new rom update.
One exception is Engadget's review though, where Joshua mentioned no noticeable improvement in speed over the European Hero (with old rom). Upon asking, he told me that the version number on his review unit is 1.22.651.1, which indicates that it doesn't have the new rom installed (new rom has version number 2.xx.xxx.x). He also mentioned that the firmware version of his review unit is 1.5, i.e. NOT 1.6 Donut.
This is puzzling. I thought CDMA got supported only starting in 1.6. OK, I know the logic, 1.6 spots CDMA supports doesn't mean that 1.5 can't have CDMA support. It's just that, if that's the case, why call this a new feature of the 1.6 firmware?

1.6 is out since yesterday ... don´t think that the new Hero has it, or am I wrong?

T-mobile UK WM6 update

hi,
i called T-Mobile yesterday to enquire about them upgrading existing devices to WM6, i was told that if the manufacturer made the updatees available then so would they. i told them HTC were making updates available for their own brand devices so the girl went off to speak to the technical department and came back to tell me that i should keep checking the website as they were expecting some kind of updates to be available in june but couldn't tell me exactly what.
sounds promising...
Lets hope so!
Thats quite wicked.. not sure how the rom are going to compare to the rom's that have been cooked here but they have changed their tune...
They did say that they were not going to update the handsets and that you would have to purchase a different model..
We shall wait and see....
D
Bonus
Great news, then we can get something solid and supported back on our handsets and lets the ROM Chefs take a holiday (though probably a quick one!)
I can say if you are looking for something stable on tmobile UK....Black Dymond with radio 1.40.30.00 is a winner at the moment.
ROCK SOLID, i tested all beta versions (beta, RC1 and RC2) and this ROM has had alot of work put in it.

What's the difference between the cupcake, Ion and Rogers Roms?

I understand that everyone's builds are different and with different tweaks and apps but what are the primary differences between Cupcake, Ion and Roger's based Roms?
I come from a Windows Mobile background and I know the different sys files in a rom made a world of differences from performance to features, is this the same with Android?
Here:

Thats the best answer you will get, it tells you everything you need to know.
Oh and obviously the rogers rom is only for rogers .

That's the only answer I have gotten through PMs and it is not what i am asking.
I understand the difference between the different Rom builds but what is the difference between 3 Roms with the same tweaks and apps but 1 is Ion based, 1 is cupcake based and ,1 is roger's based (and I am running a Rogers Rom on Tmob so they are not only for Rogers )

Isn't Rogers still cupcake based?
They're all "cupcake based." The Ion version runs quick, but lacks the T-mobile features of AmazonMP3 and the IM that has Yahoo, AIM and MSN. Rogers adds Exchange support to that (and isn't only for Rogers).

So then if I understand correctly ion just strips down the rom and optimizes the build and rogers just adds some other support (exchange) but they are all basically the same as far as abilities and features?
What is the difference between the HTC and Google builds? I recall HTC and Microsoft having 2 separate development trees for WM6.5. Is this similar?
Thanks for the help guys, I have limited Linux experience but tons of WM experience and have had the G1 for 3 weeks now. I am still trying to wrap my head around the structure and organization of the Roms.

The only differences you will really see betweek the two are the Dialer, Camera, VK, some marble game, and a PDF viewer.
I think thats all...
None of these responses really answer the first posters question. Those links are all great for showing the different features but it would be great for someone to post something that will help us understand just what those charts even mean. For example, one of the sites, Androidspin is fantastic as a chart for picking your ROM but it assumes already that you know what cupcake, doughnut, rogers, hero... is. Here in Utah, I had no idea that Rogers was a carrier. I thought it was a model of HTC phone?
Can someone explain all the different terms. Something like (pulling out of my butt cause I'm in the dark here)
Physical phones:
Dream
Magic
Hero
Operating systems:
cupcake
rosie
doughnut
Carriers:
Rogers
T-Mobile
Cyanogenmod = great for speed but lacks features
JacHeroski = based on Hero, yadda yadda yadda..
There are so many different ROM's I'm totally lost as to which one I would want to load on my G1 that is fast, stable and has lots of great features.
Man, all I can say is spend a few hours on these boards and read the stickies
Im not trying to be a **** by any means... Its just that at this point theres so many different flavors of Android out there that it would take us longer to explain it as opposed to you just readin those posts.
As far as:
Operating systems:
cupcake
rosie
doughnut

is concerned... In short Android is the overall OS... Cupcake is the first of many updates to the operating system which included things such as soft keyboard, MMS attachment save, etc. Rosie has NOTHING to do with Android, rather its an update created by HTC to lay over the existing home screen and provide some nice eye candy. Donut is the latest update on the verge of being released.

Donut/1.6 on HTC Hero

Hey Guys,
I was wondering that since Google is already sharing the Donut Love with G1's and Magic's when are we gonna see some Donut love for our lovely piece of Hardware we all know as HERO ...
I am guessing Htc is working on the 1.6 SDK provided by Google to integrate it with ROSIE, but i am thinking the Developers here are alot faster than the guys and HTC.
So can we get a Rosie with 1.6 which is rooted ofcourse but nothing else... no other modifications i mean.
Respect to all.

Good question, I would love to see that as well... BUT I suppose it is not possible without the kernel sourse, unless Sprint's Hero comes out with 1.6 and then its ROM is ported to our European Heros. That's up to the devs!
Well the Sprint Hero HAS to come with Donut... It's CDMA, and that's only supported in Donut, so I'm almost 100% positive it will ship with Donut.

That was what I thought. But Joshua @ Engadget told me that their Sprint Hero review unit only has Android 1.5 on it. Well, Android 1.6 added support for CDMA does not necessarily mean that one cannot write a driver for Android 1.5 to support CDMA.
But anyway, I do think that it is almost likely that HTC will release a 1.6 update for the Hero in a not too distance future.
The Google experience G1s and Magics are purely that - stock Cupcake ROMs. The Hero presents a slight challenge as HTC put a lot of love into the ROM, with the addition of SenseUI. Hopefully, it won't take that long to cook a Donut ROM with SenseUI, but just making the transition of the great innovations from HTC for the Hero will be the stumbling block for a Donut-based ROM.
HTC Response to my Donut question.
I asked when they'd release a ROM using Dognut ( 1.6 ) for the Hero.
Their reply:
Good Morning, HTC do not release the ROM updates. Google do. If you have any questions relating thier operating system, the updates, its benefits and release dates please visit www.android.com for further support. Here at HTC, we manufacture the hardware on the device and release hotfixes for when reported bugs needs resolution. If you have a technical support related query regarding the device, please do not hesitate to contact us again. Kind Regards, HTC Europe
This has constantly been my experience with HTC - ask them a question and they say contact Google.

Man thats so frustrating innit. I am sure if we ask google, they wont comment either coz our hero is not with "GOOGLE EXPERIENCE" ..... what a load of cr*p
well i actually snooped around and heard a couple of ppl say that it should not be a difficult task for HTC to induce Rosie into 1.6, infact one of them even said " should be a peice of cake" so i am a hopless optimist and hopefully it'll be sent as an OTA upgrade or " HOTFIX " by HTC soon...
I'll call HTC too and see if i can get any more info out
update
Just got off the phone with a customer support officer from HTC UK. And she said that while they dont have the exact date on when HTC will issue and update bundled with Donut, It is under works and will be sooner rather than later..... now the waiting games begin
correct me if I'm wrong, but 1.6 doesn't bring that much for us Hero owners right? When the first announcements came I looked through the "Whats new" list and I didn't start shouting from excitement

well the only notable improvement might be of the speed and performance, although google didn't shout about it so i m thinking it'll be minimalistic ... however detailed battery usage, universal search and test to speech are a few things i wouldn't mind having....
But actually for me its just about getting the latest updates on the Android flagship device...

One benefit will be being able to run any future apps that require 1.6 (use 1.6-specific API features). We already have apps that run only on 1.5 or higher...
system-wide search feature would be nice...
I'm not sure if anyone has noticed this, but I signed up to point it out:
http://www.htc.com/europe/product/tattoo/specification.html
http://developer.htc.com/htc_tattoo_developer.html
The Tattoo will be shipping with Android 1.6, and it uses the Sense UI. That should mean that it isn't too far off for the Hero.
Looks promising! and the Tatoo is Due to launch orange UK this month
VPN and Global search are the two main features I am most excited about in the Donut
It's supposed to be faster also.
Does 1.6 not also include the improved App Store for Android?

I installed donut on my girlfriends g1 yesterday and it seemed much faster than cupcake.

Rom Upgrades at least until Version 1.60.xxx

There will be probably more roms available from HTC
There has been 1.48 few days ago with 1.49 already out and Ithink this will be going on until Version 1.60.xxx
The question might only be, how many Roms will there be between...
Why I think so?
That's simple .... because look at the TExt coming with the Camera Update
Update for HTC HD2 – Digital Picture Enhancement
Release Date: 2009-12-10
This update for HTC HD2 delivers clear digital picture quality like never before. Living up to the name of “HD” this phone and its twin LED flash will take beautiful pictures for you to cherish your memories. Displayed in brilliant vibrant colors on its 4.3 inch screen, HTC HD2 camera will delight you.
Installationsanweisungen:
Note: This update is only applicable to ROM version is equal to 1.60.XXX.X, or lower.
What do you think?
!.6 ROM............
Yeah I reckon they'll some more updates along the way.
Cool observation, but rom naming conventions mean nothing.
It's probably just overhead in case the patch won't get incorporated into roms prior to arbitrary 1.60.
This is all over the forums... 1.60 is in testing....
1.60, huh? still wm6.5?
I Think 1.6 roms are with WM 6.5.3
the 1.6 rom is the same windows version as 1.48... not a lot has changed, yet... this could always change if/ when the official rom is out

Motorola Cliq Android 2.1 Update? Help!

Hi to everyone on this forum,
I'm here to ask for help!
I'm a Motorola Cliq owner, it's called Dext here in UK. Basically Orange reduced this phone in UK and it's selling like hot cakes and I'm sure it sells decent around the globe. It’s a mid-range phone with physical qwerty keyboard.
It uses the Android 1.5 version! Even though it's only 8 months old Motorola are refusing to confirm the Android 2.1 Eclair update. Here is the official Motorola forum where there are many complaints from us customers wanting the 2.1 update. Read on after the first couple of pages to see the complaints: [turns out I can't post links because I'm new, you can go to Motorola support pages and click on Motorola Cliq to see]
I'd like to know if you can help us out since you're such a kind community! Can you help us root this phone and put the Android 2.1 or even the 2.2 update to it when the Manufacturer (Motorola) and network carriers (Orange) are letting us down? Much appreciated. Mani.
Edit: Motorola have locked the official support thread because of the complaints about it! You can still view the thread though.
Hi, there is no release date for 2.1 on Dext (this means Cliq outside US), on the other hand there is release date for 2.1 on Cliq, that is Q2 2010 (from what I recall).
So far for US Cliq there's a 1.4.8 radio release and I think in UK there is only 1.3.20, so latest releases are not compatible, however you can root your phone with a compatible version and look for a custom ROM (like Handler's that include flash!!).
Take a look at this forum, it's for CLIQ/Dext and there is a lot of info.
http://www.modmymoto.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=399
Thanks cortinag but that Website is pointless for getting a newer version of Android, it only seems to have firmwares from other countries...
Can anyone please tell me the difficulties of porting the Android 2.2 Froyo to the Motorola Cliq/Dext? I'd like to know this since it uses quite a popular CPU and has a good amount of ROM and RAM. This should mean porting is made easier right?
You can see the spec below:
Qualcomm MSM7201A 528 MHz processor
1 GB storage, 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM
There is no theoretical problem getting 2.1 on the dext. However, you'd probably have more luck getting 1.6 running as there's more of a chance backporting the 1.5 drivers for the phone's hardware (cpu is just one component); at least you'd get 2X as many apps available in andro store. A good starting point would be one of the CM roms. The phones are relatively easy to root, instructions @ unlocker. Only unusual feature is with motoblur hooking quite deep into the system, tbh, I'd love a blur free rom for the dext/cliq. Blur is just memory hogging garbage imho. Our biggest problem is that until one of the Devs purchases a dext/cliq (unlikely now as it is pretty much obsolete and you can get a much better phone for the money) there's no one to develop the ROM.
The small business I manage IT for has 2 WinMo, 6 iPhones and 5 androids, one of them a Dext. The obsolete os on it has been a pita for me ever since our marketer came back from UK with one. Moto doesn't look like they are going to upgrade it, none of the blur phones look likely to; they just push the dates back and back, stonewalling on the forums. Our employee has chosen to switch to an iPhone. Sweet, makes my life easier; another person turned off Android by Motorola's arse-hattery.

Wow. Perfect and well-informed answer/advice. Although not pertinent to me, I must say thank you for taking the time out to help people who are new to this or just learning.
There is one tool called Scout by gsmserver.com I have used it in the USA and flashed my cliq to the 2.1 works flawless and with more features notebly free FM Radio, activating your cliq with out the carrier internet service - awesome
