Camera Quality good? - Dash 3G, Snap General

well next month is when my contract ends, debating on what to get. i like phones like the G-1 and Touch Pro 2 however i love the simplicity of these type of phones. i have a dash and love it but i hate the camera quality. how is the quality on maple?

google it.
and check the images.

The camera on the Sprint Snap seems just fine to me for a 2.0 megapixel. Definitely not a Canon replacement, but not bad for what it is.

Better than the Dash
The camera in the Dash 3G is much better. Image quality and sensor speed are much improved.

hey i hope u didnt think i was being a penis about this.
i was actually very serious...its what i did. I checked Google and Youtube for the image and vid quality.

i did the same, i found one link and the guy who reviewed it was being picky haha. i thought it was good

Dash 3G/Maple Camera
I personally think it's adequate for a phone-based 2MP cam. Compared to other offerings 'tho, it's probably below average.
Just to review...your Dash has a 1.3MP cam, the Dash 3G has a 2MP cam and the My Touch 2 has a 3MP cam. I don't know if I'd consider that a significant difference, but YMMV.
Some reviews:

Don't forget: the amount of MP's tells you only a small bit of how the quality will be. It only tells what the resolution of the pics will be. Sure, low-res pics aren't pretty, but 2.0 MP should be sufficient. Now the funny part: a phone with an 8 MP camera but with a crappy lens can take uglier pictures than a 2 MP camera with a good lens. The lens is the most important factor. The only way to decide is looking at pictures taken by the phones and compare them .

5MP Camera on HD was only commercial ?

I tried every possible situation to get the camera to act like a 5MP one but not even close.
I am happy with my HD actually but the fact that it has the 5MP camera made me buy it a week ago rather than getting the TOUCH PRO 2.
Looking at the pictures with 5MP set on, they are 2592x1552 with superfine quality which even does not make 5MP (4 maybe). Pictures with N95 were way better. Is it that hard to implement a good 5Mp camera with such a great device? Was the aim for all the stories about that 5MP camera only commercial ? I feel bad now as deciding which device to buy based on specs became really hard.
I'm a bit disappointent with the camera as well, but:
- Set 'widescreen' to off. Then you get actual 5MP pictures.
- The camera quality in the new custom roms (I use Dutty's 2.1) is slightly better.
Hope it helps

Thanks for the link. I have been reading also that the camera quality is almost as good as other 3.2MP HTCs devices which is really disappointing.
On such a small sensor, more megapixels makes the picture worse.
It's the same reason why the best pocket cameras are three year old 6 megapixel models. The new ones are 15megapixel, and are way worse.

I think you are right, maybe we should ignore the fact that cameras of HTC devices with more Mpix are better and focus on other specs like Screen/integrated Keyboard/processor/RAM/ROM.
I understand now why PRO 2 has a 3.2MP camera.
I totally agree with op but also the reasoning responses.
they marketed it as a 5 megapixel and its way below par with everything.
the phone is awesome and I wouldn't trade it with anything right now.
however I would totally sympathise with anyone who uses the camera as a deciding factor upon purchasing.
The camera is not a deciding factor but when you choose between 2 devices with same specs, one with 3.2MP and one with 5MP, you should know that you did not get anything as a plus. You only payed more.
It's only going to get sillier. New models are coming out with 8mp and 12mp, and the pictures they take are awful.
Jeez, even aps-c DSLRs from all manufacturers max out at 10/11mp, because it's counterproductive to have more (and they have sensors 245645363456546x bigger than a mobile).
So in other words, the 3.2MP of new HTC devices camera is better than the 5MP on the HD ?
The quality of the picture quality of the HD is heaps better than the pictures taken from the n95, it's just the shutter is much slower in low light on the HD, that's its weak point.
It will be a matter of time when a firmware upgrade is provided to increase the shutter.

At this sensor size, and with the same lens, 3.2mp will produce better pictures than 5mp.

3.2MP on OLD HTC device is better than the HD in terms of usability, quality is still very very good in ideal conditions.
I find the photos pretty OK in daylight. It is an average 5MP just a little worse than the N95. Just use the default settings.
I had a N95 also. Like you said, the quality of the pictures is not as good as a 2 years 5MP device. That is what i am not getting.
Man I hate reading thread like this, the fact that you think 5MP determines picture quality suggests that perhaps you buy anything before thoroughly investigating!
N95, HD, both pic quality is still very poor compared to an actual dedicated SLR or Digital camera.
Megapixels are just "dots" 1 megapixel = 1 million dots etc, therefore yes the HD can take a 5 megapixel photo, however, "megapixels" do not necassarily determine picture quality, all sorts of factors make up picture quality, such as: human knowledge and experience, lighting, the quality of the lens and sensor combination, the size of the photodiode(s), the quality of the camera components, the level of sophistication of the imaging processing software, the image file format used to store it, etc. Different sensor and camera designs make different compromises. I have n95 too and find the quality between the two similar, crap! compared to my Nikon 6mp digital camera.
Simply you dont "get it" because perhaps you dont put enough thought or research into things. Im not having a go at you, I just would assume that after 2yrs with a piece of crap N95 you'd know better.

Of course. That's been obvious for years now, same with mainstream cameras (except the dslr market, where image quality actually matters).

Higher Megapixels DO NOT determine picture quality it is merely and simply resolution, even on a high quality digital camera MP has less value than a good quality lens.

Camera Tests? iPhone 4 and X10?

Check out the comparison tests of the iphone 4 and droid x and the EVO:

I'm seriously curious about what our X10s can do against iphone 4's camera. All these articles states that the iphone 4 have the best smartphone camera out there. I guess i'm assuming because iphone's backside illumination does have an effect on low light conditions which turns out better on iphone's test photos.
What do you guys think?
Backside illumination? Are u kidding me? Its like if my ass was glowing i would never suffer from constipation.

Are you trolling?
The iPhone 4 camera produces some nice low-light pictures. The flash is over-powering, but every LED flash is like that.
I hope it is only a matter of time before someone compares the iPhone with the X10, because I'm curious. I think we all suspect the iPhone is even better in this regard than the X10 though, but healthy competition never hurts right?
I still don't get the obsession over the image quality in cellphone cameras. Sure it's nice to have a good camera but it's never gonna surpass a "real" one, I settle for "good enough" as the pics I take with the phone tend to be either to show someone something or to document something.

I am not trolling. But to think that the iphone produces good pics coz of some backside lighting its pure blasphemy. My C905 had the whole backside lighting up and going by that it should be the best cam on the planet. The sensor is probably better. I still dont see how it can beat the X10 with the camera upgrade coming with 2.1
I really want to see some tests too. It will be a shame if the iphone makes better photos especially when they havent been known for making good cellphone cameras like SE. I think no one has compared them because we only have the x10 in Canada and we dont have the iphone yet. And the states has the Iphone but no x10 I really hope X10 Makes better pics, i would be really upset if not because i think the 8.1mp camera is the one of the major features i choose to get the x10 and the only thing that can stfu aplle fanboys + the 4" Display. This would be interesting.
Don't Worry about the X10 quality!!
Man!
The X10 rocks no matter what. I'm into photography, I took few pictures with it and I'm impressed. In my opinion:
-iPhone pictures looks pleasing but not real as they are too contrasty and saturated while the X10 looks more real.
-X10 camera gives more camera options
-LED flash is down for both phones (I prefer not to use it because it destroys the real colors)
-For video recoding SE promised 720p recording so both will be equal.
-You can still get good low light pictures with the X10 provided the image-stability feature as long as you don't have shaky hands like mine
finally check out my x10 shots .
I made a few pics to compare the 2 cams. I know, that arent the best which can be made, but I'm not a camera pro to be honest.
But to take a look at the quality of both devices they seem to be ok for me.

The key is to use the right settings after how the circumstances is .
Can we please focus this thread on a direct comparison between the 2 devices?
I'm not worried, the X10s camera is excellent even in low light.
At the end of the day I know I can hold my phone any way I want to and it will work
X10 takes wonderful shots in macro mode or normal if you keep the sun behind you.
Also, i day light better use EV -3 or -7 depending on the light.
Also, just don't use the image stabilization
Will make your pictures look beautiful on display but way too soft if you zoom in.
At the end of the day, is a good camera.
There is no way in the world comparable with my old S5 IS but still a damn good camera.
Well, my opinion.
Wow, great pictures, guys. Does anyone have any guides on how to take better pictures with the X10? Your guys' insights have been excellent. I'm not a pro photographer but these tips have helped immensely.
I sure wish this camera had flash though. Regretfully the low light photos from even the best pros aren't as spectacular as can be. My fiance's N95 still blows the X10's camera away, at least as far as our comparison pics go. She's 100% Asian so of course she's a camera fanatic... I'm only half Asian so my picture taking skills are lacking lol
P.S. When we get a later version of Android, will the photo light be strong enough if someone created a camera flash application?
I ve Tried 3gs and x10
The camera in the x10 might be better in planned shots but daily use iphone is much more clear. I know this debate will have no resolution. pardon the pun. I want to love my phone but my wifes 3gs just seems better. I will keep fighting the good fight. Just my two cents. Want a great pic use your dslr, want a fun on the spot pic use your phone.
3gs seems better than our x10s? lol

EVO's camera is garbage

Seriously, how can they call this an 8MP camera?
No matter what menu settings, location, lighting I choose MOST of the pics always come out looking like garbage. Really fuzzy.
No wonder Droid X and iPhone's camera destroyed this in the tests.
And the camcorder is another good joke from HTC. 720p video recording? Really? Total joke.

It's the software that comes with it I've tried other camera software like camera pro it snaps fast like really fast. Just that the software needs to be updated for the HTC EVO. Far as stock camera video its the software encoding sucks. The hardware is great just finding the right software or somebody develops one. Seems as if all the devs are busy rooting and tweaking the roms that HTC and Google should of done before even releasing software. Then maybe the devs can focus on making apps for us. Maybe somebody will soon develop better camera and video app that really take advantage of this great camera.

Ok, two things to point out here
1. The Droid X and iPhone did not destroy the Evo in terms of camera. Camcorder wise yes, but not the camera itself. That's working just fine, and I haven't heard too many complaints about the camera itself. Most cell phone cameras at this level produce similar results.
2. Yes, the video quality does suck ass, but its been made a whole lot better here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=711808. My evo is recording at 13 mbps in h.264, and the results are fantastic. We shouldn't have to be doing this, but at least its working.
It's a phone.

Agreed. The camera sucks.. I think it's 8 in dog megapixels.
Ahh, ignorance is bliss!
Megapixels =/= photo quality directly. Mega pixel = 1 million pixels. 8 MP = 8 million pixels. There is much more than just "MP" when comparing cameras silly..
Go get educated, then come back

Very true. Tons of megapixels really only help when you want to get huge prints. The two most important parts of a camera in my opinion are the image sensor and the lens, neither of which are going to be that great on any phone camera. I think the pictures the Evo takes are pretty good for a phone.
The evo camera isn't amazing... but if you need quality pictures, DON'T RELY ON YOUR PHONE. It's a ****ing phone! Get yourself a point and shoot or a DSLR.
Guys guys think about it phone cameras has came a long way from back in the early days. Soon these cameras will take the place of point and shoot. If you want better get DSLR. I have seen some great
Photos around the forum. The camera in this EVO are capable of taking great photos plus EVO has the processor to handle it more than what a point and shoot has. Soon cell phones will be getting dual cores. But until then it is this whack stock software that is processing the photos. Take the iPhone 5mp camera making the EVO picture look bad because they have a great camera software. Only if somebody can write a better camera app if I could code that would of been the first app I would of made. That and a better video conferencing app.

As someone who has owned and used both the iPhone 4 and the Evo (returned my iP4 for the Evo), I can confidently say that the iP4's camera does indeed destroy the one on the Evo. I love my Evo and wouldn't switch back if you paid me, but the cameras aren't even in the same league.
The Evo takes photos which are on-par with the smartphones we've all seen and used over the last few years. They're okay. You can put the pics up on your website, etc., but I wouldn't rely on the Evo for anything particularly important. The iP4's camera, on the other hand, is just amazing. It can hold its own against any of the typical $200 - $300 non-DSLR cameras on the market and, therefore, can effectively be your everyday, walking around camera.
The best summary I can give is that the Evo's camera is a good to okay camera -- for a cell phone. The iP4's camera is a very good camera -- period.

Are you judging the fuzzy picture at first glance? By that I mean preview after your shot or in gallery? Because sometimes the picture if you don't zoom in it can look really fuzzy and then when you zoom in a title bit it corrects the picture quality and be very clear. Also download them to your pc and see how they actually turn out. You might be surprised. I am an avid amateur photographer so I use DSLR to shoot pictures. In good light the camera and software combo isn't bad. It has horrible low light capability but then again its a phone camera. And as many people said a few tweak here and there with the software and it will make a big difference. I know when they tweaked the HTC HD2 phone I had it made a world of difference. I know it will happen on this phone too. We have to let some get past the linpacks and quadrant scores for a little while before cameras become the hot topic
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
the pictures aren't the greatest but i have gotten some really good ones. I attached a few. People need to quit complaining though, it's a damn phone and the quality isn't half bad, if we can make it better then so be it but it's good as it is. These are from when i took my lil sisters to the zoo we were at the butterfly garden. I didn't edit these at all and they look even better on my phone
Its inferior to other devices so actually we should complain. Sure you can get nice shots but its anything but automatic.
I don't think it's that bad. Took this picture a month ago.
I agree on both sides here...the camera is pretty decent, but I do believe software improvements can and should be made.

They can call it an 8MP camera because it IS an 8MP sensor that produces a photograph that contains 8 million pixels.

Exactly. I would have to say that's one of the reasons for the "megapixels aren't everything" argument. It's just a description of how many pixels the sensor can produce like you said.
If you have a bigger sensor (which is difficult in a cellphone camera obviously) like in a DSLR, you get bigger pixels. I freakin' love my new Canon Rebel T2i I just bought last week!

Photo quality (with pictures)

Here are the first photos I have seen on the web.
http://www.mobile-review.com/pda/review/htc-ace-en.shtml#4
(edit: more shots in post #6 below)
It probably doesn't come as a surprise to most of you: the iphone is still king.
It is sad that such an expensive phone with an 8M pixels camera still makes such poor pictures in 2010/2011, when my 10 years old 3M pixels Fuji camera (which is far from high end) has been making perfect shots for the past 10 years.
After the iphone with its great camera and the galaxy s with its great super amoled screen, HTC comes out with a new high end dream phone: old gen LCD screen and old gen camera. (Oh yeah, it does have a faster CPU and more RAM - this should make me feel much better, considering the Desire/N1 was almost unusable with its bad performance..... /sarcasm off).
Seriously, there's no excuse when the iphone can do so much better with a 5M camera.
Ok, these were taken with an engineering sample. But knowing HTC, do you believe this can improve when it releases in 2 weeks?
PS: and for those wondering about the video quality, it isn't better than what we have seen from the Desire, but the fps is more stable thanks to the faster cpu: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8202670&postcount=83
HTC simply doesn't give a rat's ass about photo & external speakers quality. That's all fine and dandy, but then they shouldn't label their devices with "HD" when they clearly aren't hd.
It's a shame that Nokia N8, whose only downside is that unlucky Symbian OS, will be cheaper than Desire HD. Actually, it's the other way around, it's a shame Desire HD will be more expensive than N8.
think imma skip this one. In fact, I'll skip all HTC's untill they start using better cameras and better speakers.
Photos were taken under poor lighting conditions, which effect the white balance, and noise and they are blurry (slow shutter speed).
Not the ideal test imo... I'd rather wait for some outdoor performance.
Iphone - King?
was just wondering... since when has the iphone become King of pictures?
I dunno about Iphone4, but when I compare the 3gs with my Desire, the Desire clearly takes better pictures, and in bad light conditions, the Iphone wont even shoot a decent picture (no flash) :/
If someone is the king of picture/video it must be sony ericsson.
Even though, I still think HTC makes quiet okay pictures outdoors in daylight.
Haven't heard of Iphone beeing better at this?

Well, we are talking about new phones coming out in 2010/2011, so of course I am talking about the iphone 4 and not the old iphone 3. Furthermore, keep in mind that you are comparing a new 2010 Desire with the old iphone 3.
In every comparative review I have seen the iphone 4 camera always comes out on top. It takes pictures that are at the beginning of something worth keeping, whereas the HTC cameras are just "okay", as you say, good enough if you want to show something to someone, but who would want to keep such horrible pictures in their photo album?
The iphone 4 shots, while not perfect, are something you can keep.
Anyway, we'll be seeing some more shots soon; I am still hoping for the best
Some more shots on this page: http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/?prod_id=4018&tid=4509706
The 8MP quality is quite poor, but the advantage with such a high resolution, is that once you resize the pictures and make them smaller it isn't bad at all anymore.
I think a good test would be to take a pic with the iphone 4 at 5MP and the same pic with the Desire HD at 8MP, and then resize it to 5MP to compare.
(reload the page if the pics don't load, or go to the above link and then reload the page. The remote site seems a little strange at times)

There goes your problem. The iPhone 4 really is very good at taking pics.
They became the king of pictures since the iPhone 4.
The video capture is also very good. Even better than those mini camcoders.
Check out the sample shots from the same site.

Saying that, the lighting condition wasn't fair in the Desire HD review.

very true.
My laptop at 1600x900 is pretty high res, but i still need to make the 8mpx shots smaller to see the whole pic. After resizing the quality looks pretty damn good. Much sharper.
I hate iphone but fact is iphone pixture quality is brilliant compared to any htc phone. I'm fan of htc but do feel let down by their camera, video and sound quality. Having said this I well probably still purchase dhd as everything else they do pretty well im comparison to any other smartphone.
Htc always promises great things but tend to short change thier loyal customers with their cheap skate antics.
Early indications show that the camera in the HTC Desire isn't noticeably better (if at all) than the Desire - have to say that for a high end phone costing nearly £500 this is disappointing at best!

Not sure I agree with that. Most pupular perhaps but certainly not the best. Nokia have always had Apple licked in this department and I can't see that changing any time soon.
One of the big let downs of the Desire for me was the camera and audio quality, if this has not been improved I see no reason to dash out and buy these new models.

Right now all I am concerned about is the audio quality for recording. The evo had sucky sound quality from recording video, because of the stupid AMR codec, have they fixed that yet or what?

judging from the videos posted here, the DHD records in AAC format, with a sampling rate of 44.1 KHz at 65 Kbps. I think this is an improvement, but im not sure of the EVO's output. If someone knows where i can download an evo clip to compare..

Yeah I just now watched this clip of the DHD and I'm happy with it, a LOT better sounding than the evo:

It would be preferable to compare with the original clip, not one uploaded to youtube. I'll do some snooping.
edit: looks like the EVO only does 8 Khz compared to the DHD's 44 Khz. Not sure on the bitrate though.
second edit: EVO records audio at 12.8 kbps compared to DHD's 65 kbps. Huge difference.

If the figures are correct then it's very promising. However the youtube clip is not making me excited about the quality. I certainly hope it's better then the evo but I have lowered my expections as far as the camera, video quality is concerned. This way I won't be dissappointed. Simples.

The i-Phone may now be good at shooting but it's definitely not the King.
Have you seen shots and video taken on the Galaxy S?
They are amazing.
This is part down to a very good sensor with a nice low 2.3 f-stop making it ideal for low light shooting.
I was hoping so much for the Desire HD but if what is so far seen to go by there is nothing to whet my appetite.

According to the dozens of reviews and comparative tests I have seen, the Iphone 4 always comes out on top.
Yes, the Galaxy S is good (most of the time comes out 2nd behind the iphone4), but Iphone 4 is better.
For example, here is iphone 4 vs android video comparison (galaxy s, desire and nexus one): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_v4EJT3aTg (at 0:22 you can click on each phone to get the big video for each).
As you can see, the iphone 4 is far above everything else (but I agree the Galaxy is not bad).
As for photo, here:
Galaxy S: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_p9pmpIdf0q4/TI5bjpyyxuI/AAAAAAAAAi8/tfNGrB8CsGI/s1600/S16.jpg
Iphone 4: http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p9pmpIdf0q4/TI5bi08vgZI/AAAAAAAAAi0/9-6SJY9Bkzw/s1600/I16.JPG
And there's more here (iphone 4 vs galaxy s): http://androidhd.blogspot.com/2010/09/test-iphone-4-vs-samsung-galaxy-s.html
Seriously, once you have seen the many comparisons on the net you can only see that the Iphone 4 being better really isn't open to discussion. (and no I never had and probably never will have an iphone).
edit: but I agree, the galaxy s is very good in low light conditions. Many complain about the absence of flash, but it does much better without a flash than most other phones with flash do.

Apologies and I say this with all sincerity but I don't need to see or read the comments on the net.
My remarks are based on actual usage of the GS and first-hand observations of the Desire and i-Phone 4 operating at the same time.
I don't know who took the shot using the GS but they most certainly did not use the phone correctly... It is exceptionally bad.
All it takes is for the lens to be very slightly to the right/left/up/down of a another shot to pick up differing light patterns which in turn can cause all manner of display issue.
I have no issue whatsoever with the i-Phone's camera, indeed it very good and a marked improvement over the i-Phone 3g.
But from a personal point of view I find it difficult to accept it being termed 'The King'..... But each to their own and I most certainly would not knock your opinion or observation.

Well, to me dozens of different testers (some amateurs and some professionals) can't be wrong. Especially when the iphone 4 never failed to come out on top.
And I really did a lot of research on this as I was about to get a GS myself (before deciding to wait for the Desire HD).
But of course, I am glad you are very pleased with the GS. This is the most important in the end, isn't it.

So lets summarize the Galaxy S:
- Buggy GPS, sometimes it works for some people, sometimes it doesn't
- Laggy phone, sometimes it lags... sometimes not...
- Buggy camera, sometimes it works great for some people, sometimes it doesn't...
Iphone 4: it just works.

Well, that's not just my opinion. It's the conclusions of almost all of the testers on the web, amateurs and professionals as well.
By the way, I have posted several supportive links. Where are yours? (just kidding, this is a Desire HD thread after all)

Great Comparison - EVO Camera vs EPIC Camera

Link HERE
Kicking off this week’s battle between the HTC EVO (unboxing) and Samsung’s Epic 4G (unboxing, update and Media Hub first run), is a post covering the cameras. First, a video walking through the software on each device, followed by a series of video and photo samples. All video samples were shot in 720p HD with reminaing settings left at defaults. Don’t forget to select 720p from the resultion playback menu for the YouTube vids! All still photos have been resized to 600 pixels wide–Epic’s 5MP images were scaled down from 2560 X 1920 (max resolution), and EVO’s 8MP shots were scaled down from 3264 X 1952 (also max resolution). All other settings were left at their defaults.

Yikes, hate to say it...... but you know........
someone needs to figure out how to get our fps up on cam record!!!! this hurts... lol
I really don't understand the fascination of mega pixels on smartphones. It's good for marketing but when it comes to actual use.. you realize that they probably sacrificed the quality of the sensor for a higher number. A good example of this is the FF cam, the EVO's shoots at 1.3 MP and the iPhone 4's shoots at a measly VGA resolution, yet the difference in quality is like night and day (in favor of the iPhone 4).
All things being equal, more is better but I'd still argue that a high MP count is useless on smartphones. It takes up more space and is very, very rarely ever going to be displayed at full resolution. 99% of the photos you take on a smartphone will be resized for use on Facebook/Twitter/MMS/or general web use.
I hope HTC realizes this when designing their future phones.
Does the evo video just suck when its at such a high resolution? Is framerate better when you lower the resolution?
wonder if the fps unlock will effect the video camera as well.
Wow, I used to think our camera was good. Very good comparison though, especially the night video. Even the sound quality on the Epic is great. Too bad everything else about it sucks.
^^ exactly, you're gonna use the camera like what, 1-2 days per month, at the most. But I use my 4.3inch lcd screen every single day. Suck on that.

How do you know how much I use my camera? And I can bet MOST people here use the camera a lot more than 1 - 2 days per month. Plus the Epic's Super AMOLED screen is also A LOT nicer than ours. Thats about all the Epic has over the EVO though.

The CPU/GPU (which downright crushes the EVO) and Super AMOLED screen doesn't suck. I was also pretty satisfied by the size of the display the couple of times that I've seen a Galaxy S phone. It's definitely not perfect but there's no need to be a EVO fanboy.
In my tests with the evo and epic in video, I found some interesting results to me at least. Note, I haven't looked at the article posted by op yet. I found that when both are set to 1280x720 and 640x480, the epic has color saturation that seems closer to real life than the evo. Evo's was exaggerated. The epic's focus seemed a little sharper. Those two resolutions were the only ones I saw that both had in common, so that's what I tested at. One bad thing about the epic was when it was at 1280, after a few minutes or less, the camera app would crash with an error and the video was corrupted. I shortened the time at that resolution to about a minute and the test was fine. I didn't include sound in testing because my car was too noisy and would be too irritating to listen to during playback. I haven't posted them to youtube yet because I want to do an effect of putting both videos together side by side but I can't figure out how to do that easily. I don't have any experience in that end of video editing. I also noticed something that is already known to many people, the evo compresses the video too damn much and the video looks pretty bad sometimes. The filesizes from the epic are noticeably larger because it isn't compressing as much. I forget if there was an encoder choice in the phones or not. I might have remembered that from another rom...
I am not, repeat not, trying to slam the evo. I still love that phone very much. I'm just reporting my findings and opinion.
I have the evo and the epic and the camera is way better on the epic then the evo even taking pictures at night the epic looks like it was day time full color everything on the evo you see pixels from a picture shot in the dark
Send from Your Mothers Basement
makes me wanna trash my evo and get an epic or wait till next year for gingerbread
Wow. HTC can't code camera drivers worth ****t. HTC camera is from the same company as the iPhone 4's camera...I see why Samsung used the phone to film the TV ads...The HD video looks damn good!
Tooo bad the G S has so many other problems that Samsung will never fix. Apple is really good as getting everything working perfectly, at least.

well in that case you should of bought a camera instead.
Samsung always has and probably will continue to have a better phone cameras than HTC. Thats one thing Sammy does right. Too bad the cons outweigh the pros in everything else though.
My Samsung moment pics Id say were on par with the EVO if not a little better, and the max was 5mp with that phone. I never got that motion blur that I get using HTC.
I actually don't care which camera is best or video, it's handy to have for the odd this or that kind of thing. But I carry a camera for quality pictures and a camcorder for movies if I'm going somewhere that I know I will want that sort of thing.
There are times when you just don't have the camera or camcorder handy, so in that case use the phone.
I too got the EVO for the 4.3" screen so I can see it without having to put glasses on.
I just bought the Kodak Playsport HD Camcorder. I doubt the camera issue will ever get fixed

qft. If you want high quality pics then you should have a camera. There is a reason why cameras are still being sold even though most phones have a built in one.
