Vodafone data/sim question. - Hero, G2 Touch General

I'm on a Voda Hero, here in the UK. Everything has been peachy up until a couple of hours ago, when I dropped off the network, so no calls or data. I called Voda and they 'jinxed' the connection, which meant that the phone worked for a moment and then again I lost the network. After using WIFI and then coming off it, I now have calls as usual, but no data/emails and Voda say it is because I 'have a very old sim' and want me to visit the store in the morning to get a new one.
Sorry for such a long question, but it boils down to; can an ancient sim which has worn out lead to no data delivery, or does that seem unlikely?
Many thanks!

Just tried the sim in another phone and the data downloaded, so now I have to work out why my Hero is still polling but downloading nothing, even though I haven't changed any settings!
I would be very grateful for any input please...
Ta.

It sounds similar to the problems a lot of Vodafone users are having. I personally had the same issues and my sim's only about 6 months old. After I did a factory reset everything seemed to clear up and I've had no real problems since.

Okay, ta. I didn't realise that Voda users were having major problems - is it some kind of network clash with the Hero, do you think?

It's difficult to know what is causing it (some say its Voda blocking ports) but you can read more about it here

Hi there. I have set this up (in attempt to get some Facebook connection) and although it allows me to set up the profile, it doesn't then give me the option to select it - there is no 'green button', although the profile is in the list. I have just upgraded my ROM from the HTC site and am unbranded although using Voda in the UK.
Many thanks for your help, in advance.

Try using:
wap.vodafone.co.uk as the APN name and use wap as the username and password.

Ta, but it makes no difference. To be clear, Vodafone Post-pay ISP and Vodafone Prepay ISP are the only two options selectable. I can set up as many new ones as I like, but it isn't giving me the option of selecting them...

Vodafone UK data settings – STRANGE setup behaviour (HTC p3600)

I recently did a Hard Reset on my HTC p3600 (WM5). I have been unable to re-establish my data connection (internet/email/wap/mms) with Vodafone UK (monthly contract). I could not remember how I set up the phone originally when I bought it from Expansys UK in April 07. I phoned Vodafone for the settings but the trained monkey was predictably useless. I checked threads on this site to no avail (Even downloaded an empty zip folder that had promised a CAB file with all necessary settings http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285360)
I found a list of settings here (see link) to enable internet/wap/mms/email: http://www.4winmobile.com/forums/ppc-faq/6251-q-what-uk-roi-gprs-settings-web-wap-mms.html. Still I am unable to connect.
I did notice some STRANGE SET BEHAVIOUR. As instructed I set up connections for Vodafone Wap and Vodafone Internet. According to the above site the Vodafone ‘username’ & ‘passwords’ for both of these connections are ‘web’ & ‘web‘. I entered these and saved the connections. Later, having no success connecting, I went back to check the settings I had entered. For both connections the username ‘web’ remained the same, but the password had changed to something with about 13 characters. I can change it back to ‘web’ but once I save the settings it seems to revert to this longer unknown password (it shows as a row of asterixes). Any suggestions on what to do next are very welcome.
I believe your password is hashed to some kind of key (possibly 13 characters). This is stored instead of the three characters 'web', providing better security, since a malicious counterparty can neither `read' your password from a file, nor narrow his brute force search by examining the length of the password string.
I have a Vodafone UK contract (also bought from expansys) and used the following cab file from this thread back in my WM5 days:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310876
Why not upgrade to a WM6 rom? That has all the 'customization' settings built in so you never have to worry about how to restore these things...
Hi midgeslayer,
To make sure you do have the correct settings for internet, e-mail, WAP and MMS, here are the settings for Windows mobile 5 devices. It could be that the settings you've followed are not quite correct which is affecting the connection. Try these ones and see how you get on:-

MMS issues with unlocked HD2

Hello all, I am requesting help with an issue that I am having with my HD2.
Ive had the phone for a little over a month now, and it is a great device. I bought the phone unlocked, and it was working just fine. But recently the pass code (the 4 digit pin to use the phone) to unlock the phone stopped working, because of this i had to do a hard reset on the phone. This set everything back to factory settings.
After some work I got most of everything back to normal, my only issue that i am having is Sending MMS messages. I have the server set up correctly as well as the data connections to the internet but for some reason it still wont let me send MMS messages.
I searched all over the board but nothing i found could help me so far.
If anyone has any advice or know how on how to fix this problem it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
-Jmann

Ive searched the entire board thoruoughly, and unfortunatly most of them only talk about fixing the MMS server (which isnt my problem), unless i overlooked something
@Shum97 i appreciate that, but thats the set up for Virgin Mobile phones, not ATT
No other help? Anyone?
i dont know about at+t but on o2 uk i have to have two data connections set up. One is the proper mobile data "mobile web", the other is wap, "o2 active", and this is the one used for mms.
If i set the mms settings to use the regular data account it fails.
Thing is, when you go to settings all settings connection connection and press 'manage existing connections' you only see the mobile web account available to edit.
What you need to do to see the other is go to advanced tab, and 'select networks'.
In the top dropdown, mine says mobile web, but if i change that and choose o2 active instead, click OK, and now go back to the tasks tab, the top half now lets me click 'manage existing accounts' to edit the o2 active account instead of the mobile web account.
(dont forget to change it back, else progs that auto connect to the net will try to use the wap account. In my case it still works, but is slow, and i think costs.)
So, , , not sure if it is any help to you, but when i set up manually, (and i have done three or four times) i ...
1 - set up the o2 active wap account
2 - set up the mobile data account
3 - set up the mms server settings, making sure to choose o2 active and not mobile web as the connection.
THanks alot, ill be sure to give this a try, Does anyone think Flashing my device might help with my problem?

only if the 'connection setup' has details of the at+t network in it. connection setup for the euro leo can be found as a cab, im sure the tmo one can be too, but i suspect neither will have att network settings in it.
Id guess it's manual all the way, sorry.
ah i see, ill play around with it and see what i can do then

3g not switching on??

either I am really stupid or my 3g connection for data is not switching on...
yest night I updated the official 2.2 performance update fix (dj steve's kernal etc) onto my streak and have been using wifi ever since....
now when i try to switch on 3G...by going to settings>wireless & networks>mobiles networks and there enable data connection....nuthing happens...
any solutions to this...??..or am I doing something wrong??
ok got it working...apparently the APN had somehow got a 'disabled' written on it...
anyways...now the problem is...firstly it shows G instead of the H before...and secondly its painfully slow.!!
any solutions to this??
EDIT:: now its jumping from H to G n vice versa...
lol..what the flip is up with it....
My 3g disappeared sometime on Friday so if you're in the UK I can't help wondering if O2 have been meddling... they say they haven't but when I put in the settings they emailed to me, it all works fine again...
try setting up a new APn manually using this - i found this set is faster than my original settings from O2:
1. Press the Menu key
2. Tap Settings
3. Tap Wireless controls
4. Tap Mobile networks
5. Tap Access Point Names
6. Press the Menu key
7. Tap New APN
8. Tap Name then tap the text box and enter O2 Mobile Web then tap OK
9. Tap APN then tap the text box and enter mobile.o2.co.uk then tap OK
10. Skip past Proxy as this is preset blank
11. Skip past Port as this is preset blank
12. Tap Username then tap the text box and enter o2web then tap OK
13. Tap Password then tap the text box and enter password then tap OK
14. Skip past Server, MMSC, MMS proxy, MMS port as these are preset blank
15. Tap MCC then tap the text box and enter 234 then tap OK
16. Tap MNC then tap the text box and enter 10 then tap OK
17. Tap APN type then tap the text box and enter default, supl then tap OK
18. Press the Back key (actually it helps to press Menu>Save first otherwise you have to start again!)
19. Tap the dot next to your new profile to make it the default
20. Press the Back key four times to return to the standby screen.
thanks for tht...
but somehow right now its ripping at 1.8mbps download on o2 3g...not sure if it was tht fast before....
can I ask you on how fast the 3g is for you on o2??
will try out ur method once something screws up here...
edit:: oh god...actually now its avging 1.1-1.3 mbps...not really sure why its fluctuating but if I remember correctly I never got more than 1 mbps before....lets see for how long this lasts...
yeah, mine was atrocious before - I just thought it was O2 signal, but when it was the same in other parts of the country I did wonder! The new settings do seem to give me about 1.6mbps whereas before I was lucky to get past 1 on a good day... although I just tested it again now and it's back to low 1's
Upload speeds are consistently way higher though (higher than download, which is a bit strange!)
