Hero ROM on the Dream - G1 General

I have the Rogers HTC Dream and I got it on the day it came out. I absolutely love it.
The reason for this thread is for me, as an absolute n00b to this whole flashing ROMs and technical stuff, to ask you geniuses: how can I possibly get the Hero ROM onto my phone? I really, REALLY want it. Also, if it is possible, can you please guide me to the guide that lays out the step-by-step process please?
Thanks a whole lot.

No custom roms work on the rogers dream -- yet.
Root your phone, enable paid apps, purchase open home, get the hero skin and that should tide you over until someone figures this mess out.
I am a little disappointed by the stagnation of work being done on the rogers dream. Root is great, but it hasnt realized its full potential. Can any other dev gurus HELP?

I know. I need to know as soon as possible. The Hero ROM is driving me crazy...

I agree, I am really surprised that nothing has really happened with the rogers dream. Maybe Haykuro is silently working on it...

Let's hope so...

getting a mytouch, few questions. root/board/sense/2.0 related

so i'm ditching my G1 because it barely works anymore. apparently theres something wrong with the motherboard and thats why any rom i install fails after a week and makes the phone unusable (even cranogen's rom died on my phone)
anyway i'm hoping to have better luck with the mytouch and with researching lately i've seen all this stuff about the 32a and 32b
As far as rooting goes, to my understanding, i just use this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=556200
Then toss whatever rom i want on the SD and i'm pretty much good. That right?
From my understanding, the 32B is the T-mobile mytouch and is exactly the same as the g1. which dosn't make me too happy. But if this is true, does it have anymore space for apps or is it the same 70MB bull****?
second question. I love the hero/sense ui and i'd love to use it on the myTouch. So i know the question people hate to hear but if without having to read through hundereds of post i'd like to know which one is the most stable and has the most space for apps. By stable, i mean i can install it and use it for 2-3 months with daily use. And i have about 100Mb of apps on my G1 so i'm looking for a rom with a lot of space.
And last question, If i want to unroot and go to the official 2.0 software when it comes out (doubtful, but i may) are there any guides to go about unrooting, searched but couldn't find anything that was very clear.
Thanks in advance. now if only the phone would hurry up and get here so i can stop using my g1 that has to reboot every 3 hours.

The myTouch has more space for apps, over 100MB, but I don't exactly remember how much. I've had the phone for a week now and it's definitely better than the G1, performance wise.

if you are running cyanogen on your mytouch, you have about 290MB to download apps. Try running Qtek's Hero v1.8, just make sure that you have your three partitions. If you want to upgrade to Eclair (2.0) if and when it comes out, I suggest you wait until a rooted version of the ROM is released because if you just upgrade, you will be without your Superuser access and you will just have to root your phone all over again. But I have had the mytouch since it first came out and I had the G1 before then. It definitely blows the G1 out of the water in terms of performance in my opinion. Though I still use apps2sd, the extra memory was very handy before the phone was able to be rooted. I had about 100 apps on there and I still had plenty of memory left.
thanks for the replies. the 290mb is amazing. I'll probably be running one of the hero roms, and thanks for giving me a recomendation. I just love the sense UI so much.
Glad to hear about the boost in performance as well.
So i take it that the rooting process is just like i said since no one mentioned that. Really looking forward to getting this phone and finally ditching the G1

How to un-root a tmobile MT3G in about 4 minutes. I followed this and it worked perfectly.

thank you for that. got it bookmarked now. hopefully getting the phone today. can't wait to get started on it. looks like this will be a much better experience than the g1.
The Post here has a full guide of Rooting/Unrooting and links to a guide for Goldcards. There is another guide for rooting without goldcards but it doesnt show how to unroot or return everything back to stock. Hope this helps.

Quick tip from a Magic user:
Don't update your phone (which will probably come with Cupcake 1.5 as stock) to Donut 1.6 using OTA, if it asks you to. Rooting Donut is a much lengthier process than rooting Cupcake, especially as you're wanting to run a Hero/SenseUI rom.
As you seemed to be hyped about memory, evil D:'s nano SenseUI is apparently a v lightweight version.

I got it used from craigs list so the guy had already updated it to 1.6.
And i saw your posts in the one-touch-root topic. any chance you can explain to me how to get it to work on 1.6?
and thanks for the recommendation for the hero rom.
Relentless Rooter didn't work for me, I used it to access fastboot and then flashed to an Engineering SPL.
As far as I know, an Engineering SPL will let you flash to any ROM using the fastboot > recovery > update.zip method as Engineering SPL allows you to use fastboot with the android sdk.
I'm not really qualified to explain to you 100% what to do, but I did this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576768
You would just cange the official ION rom with a senseUI rom, i think.

VZW Eris (HTC Desire) is it actually the Hero

Hey guys, I was wondering if the new Verizon Wireless phone (the Eris) is actually their HTC Hero.
They claim it's a seperate model (HTC Desire.) Either way I was curious what was needed to get ROMs going for it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I may be out of date, but I thought the Eris wasn't rooted yet (which is is a prereq for getting ROM's installed on it).
The Eris, Cellular South, and most other versions of the phone had patched the vulnerability that Sprint had left in the phone and so it's not quite as easy currently.
It hasn't been rooted yet, and there is little to no enthusiasm to get it rooted. It may be a while before we get those custom Roms.
Well that's kinda sad. Is there any particular reason? I mean I don't own one but I am just curious. Is it just that its not seen as a demand for it or something like that?
Exactly, all just a numbers game. The vzw Eris will get rooted someday though, it might even be by you
It's a combination of lack of enthusiastic developers and the fact that the asroot2 exploit that works for the Sprint Hero has been patched. So... Haha. I have one and I've been desperately looking around for a way to root. I don't think enough people are buying it to generate enough enthusiasm to get people to really want to develop

Yep. may also help if I owned one. I still use my trusty awesome G1 and see no real reason to change. But I was debating "fixing" the eris. However I have quite a bit to learn in order to do so. And with the upcoming software patch for it I may want to wait. But thank you for clarifing. I really do appreciate it. If others would like it or like help with it I figure I am more than willing to go at it.

Yeah I could see that. As the Eris is up against the Moto Sholes I can see why not many people are. Getting one.
Actually, I've read that more people are buying the Droid Eris. They'll come in wanting the Droid and leave with the Eris.
Well it's partly a numbers game but it's partly a "starting from ground zero" timeframe thing. GSM Heros were the first out and they took a certain amount of time to become rooted...then came the CDMA Heros who needed a different way to root and it took a few weeks to get to there as well.
So...while it may or may not take longer, it will probably be around the same amount of time from release-ish before something shows up (or we get lucky with a new shiney kernel exploit to elevate priviledges...)

I disagree. We could be sitting for a while before anything happens. No known exploits, I don't think many people who would develop are rushing out to get one. It'll happen eventually, but it in my opinion, we'll be sitting tight for a while. Not that any of us can complain if we can't find one ourselves, haha.
What about using the Sprint Stock RUU for the Hero to load the original Sprint ROM on it and then rooting it? Subsequently, you could go back to a custom Eris ROM or something of the sort. I don't know if the Hero RUU would work on the Eris though.

I've been reading the Howard Forums and getting the impression that folks are more impressed with the Eris as opposed to the boxy and un-sexy Driod. I knew I was buying the Droid Eris before I called VZW. I am just GLAD to finally be rid of T-Mo after 7 years of service. While they were good for a while, their customer service started to really piss me off lately. There's also the fact that they really didn't train their PDA reps on Android before they released the phones. And the lack of 3G in most of the country was a killer! Now, if someone would like to root this bad boy. I would be most grateful.

It's up to VZW or HTC to post it, unless someone on the inside leaks a copy for us.... hint hint... anyone have a copy they want to share with us?
just wondering. I have a sprint hero. but you VZW people shouldn't wait too long, cause i think the droid has the same kernel version as the eris, so when they find an exploit in the droid, to get root you VZW people should be able to use the same exploit. now if the droid's bootloader gets hacked then yeah, you'll probably have to wait.

Haha. Wishful thinking, but I'm right there with you. I can't believe they patched the asroot2 exploit.
Ive been flashing my htc phones for a long time now, but im new to android and the rooting process... Im trying to learn more and help with the Eris if possible, but I have a simple question. Is the only way to root the Eris, to get the original RUU?
I have the Eris now, and if I can do anything else I would be willing to do so!

Given up on waiting for root..

Well, I hate to say this but I have given up waiting for root as an early leak user. I feel I have the right to post this due to 1, helping wherever I could, 2, contacting paul to even get the ball rolling after jcase mentioned him 3, offered donation for a solution etc...
I love my eris but see all the neat things I am missing out on. When the evo comes out, I will be jumping from pageplus to sprint... i am sure that will be rooted and if not... im still better off.
Thank you to all who have tried their best.. I think this is one instance where the phone beat us. I am annoyed that we do not have root as it allows us to better use our own phone.
anyway, best of luck to all...
Do not feed the troll...

I dont blame you homie.. If I had not managed to get a second eris after I jumped on the leakv1, I would have gone nuts watching all the badass ROMS and hacks get released and have no way to use them.
Ok everyone can quit complaining about the 2.1 update! I just checked Verizon ERis Software Upgrade page and its announced that there is an update coming soon! I know theres no date but at least it is now finally up on their site. If you dont belive me check it out your self & for those who doubted it would ever come this just shows that paicence is a virtue.

Just short out the battery connection on the back of the phone with a small piece of aluminum foil, take it in to Verizon, explain how your phone just turned off and won't turn on and voila! You get a new phone the next day running stock 1.5, ready to be ROOTED!
That's what I did after installing the 2.1 leak and realized I couldn't get root. Let me tell you, my rooted Eris running Evil Eris v2.0 with the overclocked processor is far greater than my friends Moto Droid. I hope you make the right decision.
P.S. Don't be a bully.
There are always risks involved when upgrading a device, I learned that with the PSP and now other people are learning it with their Eris. Crying about it (in the wrong forum no less) is doing nothing to help.
A root will likely eventually be found, patience is the key. As soon as you just can't stand it anymore and upgrade/change device/etc you've potentially lost something forever.
One thing is for sure; I find it insulting that people feel they have a right to complain about being on leak, nobody held you down and forced you to flash anything.

It's not overclocked yet, it definitely doesnt do anything at the moment. And as far as shorting it out, I took mine into verizon complaining about the speakers all cutting out glitch and they didnt even look at the phone and swapped me out a new one in 10 minutes. It's not that hard really, just find someone in the store who looks like an idiot. All the smart people are in the back anyway.
Or You can not be a cheapskate and just Buy a new one..
or should I get a MOTO Droid or incredible but I still have my Eris with

Not everyone has lots of money and buying a new eris outright is about 500 or so, used on ebay they go for over 300. speaking for myself I know I'd rather have the 3-500 to spend on bills and things then buying a new phone.
Even though I am kicking myself for not waiting a bit longer, I don't regret upgrading to any of the leaks. It gave me 2.1 months before everyone else. A little more patience never hurt anyone.

Seconded. But this thread is useless. If you're tired of waiting on 2.1 leak root then get a new phone, try and get a replacement or just sit there and use the phone like it was meant to be. There's nothing wrong with 2.1 v3 in my opinion. Telling everyone you're leaving because of it is just asking to be trolled/flamed. I suggest a mod closes this thread or something.

Agree, 2.1 is so much better than 1.5. Plus, if you want to play with your phone and "customize it" a little there are home replacements in the market you can try. Helixlauncher is really good, and I just found one yesterday on android forums, real nice. It's called Zeam, http://www.mediafire.com/?jtzjyoklenk
Little to no lag and dialer is lightning fast.
So while you might not be rooted, it's nobody's fault that root hasn't been found yet or that you (op) flashed the leak. I want root too, but have the patience to wait for it to be found. There are some of the best devs on here working on it, only a matter of time.
~ happy 2.1 v3 leak user
my point wasnt i was unhappy with anyone here. I love 2.1v3 and yes, its leaps above 1.5
Just annoyed at what I am missing. I do not want this topic to be considered trollish..

G1 Needs Root and Froyo in Vegas. Any takers?

Hey guys.. Basically I'm still sort of new to Rooting, and flashing, and doing all these other things. I have the Nexus One and I was told it's much easier to root and unlock it than something like the G1. then doing the Danger SPL also has me worried.
Basically my mother has the G1, and she used to love it, but between using my N1, and it just getting older she's really starting to complain she wants a new phone.. The 1.6 Email client sucks compared to 2.2 & I'd really like to throw Cyan 5.08 or CM 6 on her G1.
Basically is there anyone in Vegas that would do this procedure for me for a small fee? I cant risk messing it up as she needs it for work n such. PM me if you're in vegas! Thanks!
Froyo isnt avalable for the G1 yet, there are a couple of smashed together builds, but nowt with everything working.

Your better off doing it yourself its not hard. (That's what she said)
And after your done rooting I suggest flashing a 2.2 (Eclair) ROM.
because their the most stable and fastest.
Well, basically I've rooted and flashed many rom's and updates on my Nexus One. But I had someone helping me from Androidcommunity.com and made it easy because we had a few snags and I'm new to fastboot and never done much in command prompt either.
I was told it's much harder, and easier to screw up when rooting a G1. and doing the Danger thing so i can use something like CM5 is even riskier.. Thats why i'd like to just get someone to do it.
as long as I follow instructions it's not to bad is it
If you look around in the development section...you'll see fireats got versdions of cm5 that don't require the dangerspl.
Also, if your mother is needing this phone for business....don't go messing around with it.
Oh and if by email you mean exchange, check out Touchdown in the Market.
This is the site i used when I rooted for the first time. it was easy.
http://theunlockr.com/2010/04/26/how-to-root-the-htc-g1dream/
Rooting the G1 is actually easier than a lot of other phones. The aforementioned 1-click method is probably the easiest way to go. Even though I no longer use my G1 as my daily driver, I still flash it pretty regularly. All my friends with G1's usually have me root their phones. So far I haven't bricked one yet so u should be all good. I'm in Vegas too so if u have any questions, lemme know. Having said that, you should be all good.

[Q] Why root?

So I am really liking the aria , but I am wondering what more could I do with it if I root it. So can someone tell me the pros and cons of rooting. I hear that rooting takes some time so is it worth it. What roms can I run, and will I be disappointed when running them because they crash. Thanks
Rooting the Aria takes around 15 minutes if you do it right (use the unrevoked method).
Pros-custom ROMs, add your own mods, etc.
Cons-voids warranty (supposedly...I've heard HTC won't deny your claim)
There's probably more of each, but they don't apply unless you're into programming.
There are two main custom ROMs for the aria:
Liberated-removes ATT bloatware, enables sideloading...great ROM when I used it, won't crash (under normal circumstances) because its basically stock. Great if you like Sense.
Cyanogenmod-no Sense, adds new customizabillity, no bloatware/sideloading block/etc...also great, you might experience small problems with GPS and bluetooth (just from what I've heard) but nothing major.
You can check out the Aria Development forum here for more information.
I still haven't done it with mine, even though I had my G1 rooted and running cyanogen within a day. The difference? The G1 wasn't completely functional stock; the Aria is. As I had to go on a 5 week tour of Central Asia right after I got the Aria, all I did was unlock for a parade of strange sim cards. It falls into the "not broke, don't fix" category.
That said, now that I'm back for a little while I'll probably root and at least put liberated on it. The att apps don't take much room or cause any trouble; it's just knowing that they're there and can't be taken off...
If that makes sense to you, root.
If not, don't. The phone works great and has less, well, "idiosyncrasies," shall we say, than cyanogenmod ever did.
When you root can u get the htc stock rom if you dont want the custom ones
Sent from my HTC Aria

Just root and have fun with it. You will get all the information you need from the good folks here. Your phone will be all it can be when you release it form the restrictions of ATT and HTC.
