Macs & More - XPERIA X1 General

I have an X1i (believe it's a UK release because I got it from the Middle East), and I don't have a PC. I have a Mac
I'm currently using The Missing Sync to sync contacts and what not, but there appears to be a lot more I could be doing with ROMs if I had a PC running. For example, I am unable to update my ROM with the Service Update tool because there just isn't one for the Mac.
Any tips/ideas on this? All the ROMs out there are in .EXE format. Do I just copy them to the X1 and run them? Or do I really HAVE to have a PC?

I posted a thread a while ago regarding just this, whether other Mac users are using WinMo phones as well. Regarding ROM's, I still have no clue. You could try virtual software if you have an Intel Mac, I'm on a PPC Powermac so that's not an option for me.
Turns out there just aren't many and using a PC is the best solution.
Windows Mobile just isn't Mac friendly.

it's not just a mac thing it's also not very linux, 64bit xp, 64bit vista, 64bit win7, 32bit vista, 32bit win7 friendly

Bugger.
It's not very nice having to bum someone's PC and run hacks off it. Hmmmm...
I'm going to experiment with Missing Sync, see how far it'll take me.
I can run Bootstrap if I must, though I just totally despise windows. I'm looking for any way to get it off my xperia - everything I CAN do appears to be skinning, nothing more. Not even Android can be set to hard boot - yet...
Yes, don't ask...the xperia was a gift. If I had my way, it would've been anything NOT running WM.

What operating system do you use???

basically i want to know if you use windows, mac, or linux, and why you use that OS, and also how many people have yet to root their phone because it seems too complicated. i am currently working on a script runable in linux and soon to be runable in windows that will automatically root your phone for you. all you will need to do is run the command, hit enter a few times, set up a setting in anycut(which will be installed on the phone after flashing to RC29) and walk away, or you can sit there and stare at it if you want.
but since i know there are those three main OS's i wanted to know if i should continue trying to get this automated and running in all three operating systems.
I use all of the above so I can't vote. And technically if you own an Android phone you're using Linux.

Lately I've been using Windows 7 since I'm giving it a go to see if I want to return to Windows or not after the Vista blunder.
Honestly though I'd make an OS independent way of doing it to simplify it. Like make it in Java, Python, or in Mono so it'll be one app for all 3 OS's.
Why did you say "M$" in the poll option and not "Microsoft". I thought bagging Microsoft for no good reason stopped being cool 5 years ago?
because up until recently if you were to try and get ahold of a copy of XP an older and "obsolete" operating system they charged nuch more than they charged you for a copy of the crappy vista that the deemed perfect. the company will do anything to make more money than they chould be making, they overcharge for everything and quite frankly i would rag on mac too but it has been a long time since i touched a mac. these days i don't pay for a thing when it comes to my computer software, if there is not a free alternative then i don't need the program. software companies charge an arm and a leg for their software and then they whine and cry that people are pirating it. take a look at photoshop. over 60% of the copies of photoshop that are installed on computers nationwide are pirated copies, and is it any wonder? adobe wants to charge nearly $900 for a piece of intangible software, i'll stick with gimp
I've got an old iMac I still use (OS 9.2), and my main pc is quad boot (XP Pro, Vista, 7, and Unbuntu), and my netbook is dual boot from the hard drive (XP Pro & Vista) and I've got persistant install of Ubuntu on an sdhc card, and a live install of GOS on an sd card.
So I think there should be an option of "All of the above".
Linux here as a desktop OS since the times of Slackware 9.1
Windows XP for commercial development (C# )
I am giving Windows 7 a try too
Work: WinXP
Home: Win7 Beta
Laptop: Currently XP, switching to Ubuntu or some other linux flavor this weekend.
I primarily use Windows because i'm more of a PC Gamer than console. I'd most likely switch completely to Linux >IF< the game industry went full throtle into Linux development. Not talking about a Windows Emulator on linux to run windows games, but coding games natively for Linux.
I think this is a great Idea. I've rooted my phone to get themes and auto-rotation and the updated APN Radio stuff on it. Showed it to some of my friends and they want to root as well, but want me to do it for them cause they are nervous. I tried explaining that if they just follow the step by step instructions, they will be fine. So this will certainly make things easier for them.

I use Vista mainly because Its not that bad despite some of its problems. A few registry tweaks, scratch that a LOT of registry tweaks go a long way Looking forward to windows 7! I like the freedom with Linux but I don't have the time needed to tinker with it and its a hassle. Hackintosh was alright when I used it, mac os is meh. mac hardware is sexy though. Gimme hardware and keep your OS apple ^^
windows vista on my laptop and windows XP at work.
i rooted to JF 1.42 RC33 but i fumbled my way through...i'm sure anyone with equal or lower "skillz" as me would greatly appreciate the automated root.
thx!

Heh, I'm the opposite. Mac hardware only looks good, but underneath its poorly put together and the designs are flawed. I can build a decent looking hackintosh that looks just as good. The OS, however, has a lot of potential assuming Apple allows people to customize their experience without hacking the OS to install a theme and stops locking it into their crappy hardware setup. After all its a heavily commercialized BSD hybrid that makes some things much easier.

I take it what you're doing doesn't work with MONO (it supports up to C# 3.0)? I know people who do C# development work on Mac OS X thanks to MONO.
It cannot be categorized into one vote I need two.
Yeah I know it sucks but I have to have at least one machine with Windows because I am a gamer and until the day that Linux has the same level of 3D application/Gaming support I will always need windows.
Though for everything else I'm either testing the Kubuntu 9.04 Alpha or using Kubuntu 8.10.
I use Mac and the only thing I haven't been able to do with it is format my sd to EXT2, so I end up using my Vista In Parallels. Now, Does anybody knows why in my Mac shows ext2 as one of the format options but doesn't seems to work right
My Labtop Has Windows Vista and Ubuntu
And My Two Desktops Have Windows XP
Dual booted with Vista Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu.
Dual boot with Fedora 10 & Windows XP sp3
Windows xp gets used once in a blue moon to play a game. Most of the main windows applications I used can be run in wine these days. Everything else is vastly easier to do in linux.
I run XP at work, and Tri-boot of Vista/Win7/Ubuntu at home.
I would have thought that if you can't understand how to root your G1...you really don't need to root it in the first place??
I run almost exclusively Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 on at least 5 machines (6 if you count the ps3 in). I run no dual boot but I have XP post SP3 in Virtualbox on my main machine for my bank but I will solve that later as the bank officially now supports Ubuntu but my current certificate is incompatible.
I run Ubuntu because I don't get any problem with viruses, trojans, malware, spyware and clogged registry. I also run Ubuntu because almost everything can be done from the command line. You can mod almost all parts of Ubuntu including Linux. It's free and I can make the modifications I want to the source code. Some applications and drivers are proprietary which can be a pain but that's how the current state is and usually you don't need so many proprietary parts. There are many free apps available via apt-get, both using official repository, ppa:s and external repositories. I find Linux distributions more modular than Windows. There's less problem with unsupported old hardware like in newer editions of Windows. Canon and HP skipped Vista support for both our scanner and printer. Only the basic features of the printer worked. In Ubuntu I get a lot more information from the printer with CUPS than with Vista and the inbuilt driver. The scanner was impossible to make work on x64 Vista. x86 worked but it was an ugly driver hack with the old xp driver and not optimal. Most hardware drivers for old components are built in into Linux.
I've tried Vista many times and it has not met my expectations of a good OS. My latest TX tablet crashed while I finished the configuration and went to burn the recovery discs. I tested ram and the harddrive and there were no problems. After running Ubuntu on that machine for quite a while I consider it stable. My previous TX computer had similar problems. The lack of drivers for old hardware, the lack of a good CLI and the need for all the protection makes me look elsewhere. Windows 7 is looking a lot better but It's far from what I want to use. I tried powershell and I just wanted to get out of there quickly. I've used MAC OSX including 10.1, 10.4 and 10.5 and I like it a lot. Unfortunately as you may have understood OSX is exclusively made for MAC:s. It runs on many x86/x86_64 pc:s but often there is always something not running properly.
If Apple would make OSX available for PC:s with BIOS (which they most likely won't because then they wouldn't sell as many MAC:s) I would use it. The Ubuntu GUI is good if you change the theme but Aqua on OSX is much better.
I think we are heading more towards cloud based OS:S / webOS:s /online-OS:s.
Sorry for the rant. I just felt like writing.
Debian linux testing version..

Mac users with X1's (or any WinMo phone for that matter!)

So I was wondering, what Mac-users here are using to make life easier using a Windows Mobile phone with a Macintosh?
I currently use SyncMate (free version, just for contacts and agenda backups) and have tried using Doublemate to sync my phone to iTunes, but that didn't work yet and actually haven't tried anymore since months. So I just copy over musicfiles from iTunes to the X1 in USB-mode.
For movies I just use iSquint to re-encode them to MP4's to watch in the mediapanel. Still need to find a way to properly tag my iTunes library because I'm still getting 'unknown artists' which of course is highly annoying!
I backup a lot of mobile-snapshots with iPhoto, which I find to be an excellent and easy-to-use photomanager though with poor flickr-integration (I use flickr-uploader mostly anyway).
So, Mac user's of X1's and WinMo devices, share with me and others your experiences, tips & tricks of using two highly competing OS's!
I don't think many people use Macs here...
I use my MarkSpace Missing Sync for Windows Mobile (http://www.markspace.com/) to sync Address Book and iCal with my X1. I tried SyncMate (the paid version), didn't like it, think it needed more development; one annoying thing it did was try to grab every USB device connected to my Mac. I've also got Parallels VM installed, so I can also use MS ActiveSync.
I don't worry too much about trying to sync with iTunes or iPhoto, just simply mount my X1 and transfer files using drag and drop - keep it simple.
I also use my X1 as a wireless broadband modem. I use OS X bluetooth DUN rather than a USB connection, works well.
I don't consider OS X and WM compete at all. In fact there's plenty of support around that they complement one and other nicely.
I've been totally anti-microsoft mac-head person for a long time... BUT I've been a huge fan of SE phones also for a equally long time.
I was thinking of getting a iPhone like everyone else, but there were so many features missing you'll get on a "regular" smartphone. And I was also a avid Palm user also in their pre-phone pda heyday. So it was just so logical go with X1.
Just flashed to 6.5 it got rid of so many annoying things I didn't like on 6.1. Mainly on UI side. And I love the superhackability of WM/HTC phones. You can do anything like with them. iPhones a different game.
Basically the keypoints for me were keyboard, console-emulators and expanpability/hackability. Actually I consider my X1 as a nice little xtra laptop to live alongside my MacBook Pro. Nowadays I don't drag my 17" inch along all the time as I can do all the things I need on the go with X1. And WM is a pretty straightforward and basic OS so I get along with it.
My mac talks and syncs pretty decently with X1 via Missing Sync. It's not perfect but enough for me. And mostly the regular usb transfer does the trick.
And after founding out xda-developers this has grown into a nice little hobby to tweak around with WM
I use itune agent to sync my itune music on pc with my x1 it works
ok another option is the program salling
both are made to sync non ipods/phones with itunes
but not sure if there are mac versions of them or other options for mac
Are you guys also irritated by OS X leaving invisble files on Windows devices? I'm guessing it's something that has a good function within OS X itself, but outside of OS X it just takes up space.
double post please delete
Hey all, I was using Missing Sync from MarkSpace worked great, although sometimes you might need to reboot both devices if recognisation is FAIL.
Anyway ran into some problems a while back with restoring my backups with some roms just failing after a restore, figured it mustve been a problem with a specific contact, so now have two different contact databases, my phone and my pc.

I just use a free copy of Syncmate, I only use it to backup contacts. Other stuff I just drop as a USB drive.

[Q] Is it possible to update to 2.1 with a mac?

Hello,
I am unable to download and use PCC because I have a mac. It seems silly to me that update software isn't compatible with mac. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem/resolved it.
I'll be looking to borrow a friends pc in the mean time, I guess. . .

No. Buy an iPhone

I have a Mac as well, but thankfully, there's something called BootCamp that lets me boot into Windows anytime I need it. Every Mac user should have BootCamp and a copy of Windows installed.
LOL
Yeah, I ruled out the Iphone for a number of reasons. . . Anywho, turns out I have software VMware fusion, it'll let me run windows applications on the Mac OSX, so I'll try that when I get home.
Just seeing if there were any .dmg programs out there for sony, but I guess not. Makes sense since since any phone outside of the iphone is not oriented at all for mac, but oh well.
Thanks for the help guys!

hopefully you have an intel mac, your only option is to use bootcamp. VMware or parallels will not work. There's no mac software for flashing
Meh, forget it.
Get the 3 sets of files you need, copy to a USB key, then borrow someone's Windows 7 PC, or go to library, Kinko's, etc and perform the work there. With the right files etc, the flashing process only takes about 10 mins max.
oh and make sure you have activsync installed. need that to ensure the drivers/connection is made
your only solution is to buy an iphone 4
lol i kid i kid.... I think you can use virtual box or something like that to use windows programs or just go to a friend house with a pc

can i not just install the .exe file directly on my phone and open it up on the phone itself???
and i got something called " a solution " which is
1- Install bootcamp if you dont know how-to forget the whole thing
2- Buy a PC YOU WONT REGRET IT
3- Dah ... this is xda = Wm (windows) + Android (linux) no iphone so no mac sell your mac
no way respectively (regarding imac)

No, if it was that easy don't you think we all would be doing it that way? Do you not know anyone with a PC? I think it's your only option as far as I know.
hmmmmm i work in the grpahic design industry! we all use macs....
i'll have to go to a cyber cafe somewhere.....
so first i got the do the HardSPL thing and the Radio thing before i can do the MAGLDR thing and NAND thing....
wow..... i need more than 10 mins to do all that....
You NEED to use Bootcamp. I use my Macbook pro for all of this flashing I do. All through bootcamp.
If you try and install HSPL with VMWARE you will most likely brick your phone. USB connection will be terminated when the phone changes state using VMWARE.
Go to a friend, install clockwork recovery there and then you'll never need a pc again
you can flash through recovery as soon as you have installed it.

Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
A VM with direct USB access could work, but I don't know if there is even one available on Mac and if the Mac CPU's support it (you need a pretty new CPU with Intel VT-d or AMD-Vi) and a supporting hypervisor like KVM or Xen (on Linux) or VMWare ESXi4 or higher. Maybe VMware Fusion for Mac supports it too, they do a pretty good job of Video card passtrough but I don't know about USB.
But my point is: it might be possible, but why even bother? Just get access to a Windows PC or install boot camp (if you have an Intel Mac).
You can't complain now: when you bought you're HD2 you know that WinMo isn't really designed to work with Mac (you use iSync right? It isn't even developed by MS) and it never has been common to flash from Mac (I don't even know if it is possible)

[Q] MMS Not working... Setup APN manually

Hey guys, got WP7 on my HD2 today and I was reading that you had to manually set your APN to gain 3G. I set mine up (epc.tmobile.com for TMOUS) and I have 3G, yet MMS still wont work! Have searched and searched and it seems some people's just works randomly. Halp!
try download from the market in the HTC section the connection setup... and let it configure the phone for tmobile... I don't know if it will fix the problem but theres no harm in trying
dont you have to go through that long fix to use the market....? right now i cant do that because the SDK tools wont install. says there is an issue installing .net framework 4 something or other.... :/ looks like im going back to stock 6.5 and android for now

If you cant side load the connection setup since you dont have the dev tools installed and don't have it activated with Live... No other way..
Normally it would work with the APN set correctly since theres no other options like mms ip and so on... Enjoy Android.. Lets see if in the future this issue gets fixed
Well... I guess my heart is set that I am so in love with WP7, I am going to keep trying. My issue was the .NET framework. When I try to install the SDK it says that the .NET Framework 4 blah blah couldn't install. Mind you I manually installed the .NF4 beforehand, uninstalling and reinstalling now, will report back. Until then, anyone had this problem then fixed it?

Now back on topic.... lol. So, I got Zune to load and my device connects correctly. Now chevron isn't working and apparently there is a 1% chance of anyone getting it to work on XP. Yet, I was just informed that most roms come pre-unlocked so I wont need chevron!

If the ROM you have says it comes activated and unlocked with the registry changes already cooked then all you have to do is load up Zune and connect the phone.. then on the phone go to Music & Videos or the Market so the Sync Complete Screen comes up then just use TOM XAP installer or a hacked version of the Developer Application Deployment Program to sideload and .xap you want (connection setup)....

What cooked rom are you using? I'd like a preunlocked one... probably make things easier.
had the same issues with t-mobile uk. downloaded the htc conntection wizard and ran that and it worked fine. also try sending a picture message, as sometimes that seems to fix the issue (i had to do this on android).
as for the chevron hacks etc, you are better off using a pre-unlocked rom. look in the wp7 development section of this forum and u will find most roms will cook it in. if u have that then your next challenge will be the windows live id for marketplace access. US have chat support for windows phone 7, but in the UK i had to phone them and just got given a code
your PC will run windows 7 fine, windows 7 needs less resources than vista, i have some very old PCs running windows 7 and they run fine, the only issues i have come across is aero not working, which i can live without.
you may find that it is a worthwhile upgrade, as not only with the wp7 dev tools be much easier to install/use on windows 7, but any updates to them are most likely to only be available to windows 7, plus XP is in extended support, meaning that updates will only be rolled out if they are critical, and most newer software will carry the designed for windows 7 logo.

you may find that it is a worthwhile upgrade, as not only with the wp7 dev tools be much easier to install/use on windows 7, but any updates to them are most likely to only be available to windows 7, plus XP is in extended support, meaning that updates will only be rolled out if they are critical, and most newer software will carry the designed for windows 7 logo.

agreed. waiting for my hard disks to partition and installing windows 7.
I flashed a WP7 rom on my phone that is pre-unlocked, but I am still unsure how to side-load this connection setup. Phone connected and recognized by zuneeeee. What next?

Glad to hear everything started to work out...
This is how i sideload apps
Once Zune regognizes the phone and syncs succesfully while still pluged in... on the phone make sure the backlite is set so it wont turn off.. if it turns off it breaks the connection.... Once you have that set go into the market on the phone or Music & Videos... Once you go into one of those apps it will say that you are connected and it will sync briefly and say sync complete... while still in that sync complete screen start up the Application Deployment and browse to the connection setup .xap and deploy it.. If the connection Setup is signed correctly (official App) it should successfully send it to the phone and load up right away.. if not it should be in the programs list
Hmm.. alright thanks man. Ill definitely give it a shot tomorrow.

Halp!

Exactly what I have running. Runs Ultimate fine.
Back on topic. Its not tht hard to sideload apps.
Turn lockscreen timer to never in settings.
Open Zune. Wait for sync complete. Minimize Zune.
Deploy xap via Toms xap installer or even easier download wp7 marketplace for PC and set xap file association to have wpdeploy run on double click.
