Mac users with X1's (or any WinMo phone for that matter!) - XPERIA X1 General

So I was wondering, what Mac-users here are using to make life easier using a Windows Mobile phone with a Macintosh?
I currently use SyncMate (free version, just for contacts and agenda backups) and have tried using Doublemate to sync my phone to iTunes, but that didn't work yet and actually haven't tried anymore since months. So I just copy over musicfiles from iTunes to the X1 in USB-mode.
For movies I just use iSquint to re-encode them to MP4's to watch in the mediapanel. Still need to find a way to properly tag my iTunes library because I'm still getting 'unknown artists' which of course is highly annoying!
I backup a lot of mobile-snapshots with iPhoto, which I find to be an excellent and easy-to-use photomanager though with poor flickr-integration (I use flickr-uploader mostly anyway).
So, Mac user's of X1's and WinMo devices, share with me and others your experiences, tips & tricks of using two highly competing OS's!

I don't think many people use Macs here...

I use my MarkSpace Missing Sync for Windows Mobile (http://www.markspace.com/) to sync Address Book and iCal with my X1. I tried SyncMate (the paid version), didn't like it, think it needed more development; one annoying thing it did was try to grab every USB device connected to my Mac. I've also got Parallels VM installed, so I can also use MS ActiveSync.
I don't worry too much about trying to sync with iTunes or iPhoto, just simply mount my X1 and transfer files using drag and drop - keep it simple.
I also use my X1 as a wireless broadband modem. I use OS X bluetooth DUN rather than a USB connection, works well.
I don't consider OS X and WM compete at all. In fact there's plenty of support around that they complement one and other nicely.

I've been totally anti-microsoft mac-head person for a long time... BUT I've been a huge fan of SE phones also for a equally long time.
I was thinking of getting a iPhone like everyone else, but there were so many features missing you'll get on a "regular" smartphone. And I was also a avid Palm user also in their pre-phone pda heyday. So it was just so logical go with X1.
Just flashed to 6.5 it got rid of so many annoying things I didn't like on 6.1. Mainly on UI side. And I love the superhackability of WM/HTC phones. You can do anything like with them. iPhones a different game.
Basically the keypoints for me were keyboard, console-emulators and expanpability/hackability. Actually I consider my X1 as a nice little xtra laptop to live alongside my MacBook Pro. Nowadays I don't drag my 17" inch along all the time as I can do all the things I need on the go with X1. And WM is a pretty straightforward and basic OS so I get along with it.
My mac talks and syncs pretty decently with X1 via Missing Sync. It's not perfect but enough for me. And mostly the regular usb transfer does the trick.
And after founding out xda-developers this has grown into a nice little hobby to tweak around with WM

I use itune agent to sync my itune music on pc with my x1 it works
ok another option is the program salling
both are made to sync non ipods/phones with itunes
but not sure if there are mac versions of them or other options for mac

Are you guys also irritated by OS X leaving invisble files on Windows devices? I'm guessing it's something that has a good function within OS X itself, but outside of OS X it just takes up space.

double post please delete

Hey all, I was using Missing Sync from MarkSpace worked great, although sometimes you might need to reboot both devices if recognisation is FAIL.
Anyway ran into some problems a while back with restoring my backups with some roms just failing after a restore, figured it mustve been a problem with a specific contact, so now have two different contact databases, my phone and my pc.

What do you mean? To backup or update your contactlists etc?
I just use a free copy of Syncmate, I only use it to backup contacts. Other stuff I just drop as a USB drive.

Wizard as a Vista Sideshow device?

You'd think it would be built in, but does anyone know if it will be possible to use the Wizard as a Windows Sideshow device in Vista? I got a horizontal dock for this thing just so I'd be able to run a gadget or two on it, but I'm surprised they didn't have it working out of the box ... with the popularity of the Wizard at Microsoft.
A quick search on google shows that there is quite a lot of interest for this.
IMO, it is almost certain this functionality will be added to Windows Mobile devices; lets just hope they don't limit it to WM6 devices.

Very Good idea, I got some old phones with 2.5" LCD working, it is now time to wake them!
um.. install resco photo viewer.. i remember this feature on my hp6515a and after installing resco i have it back!

Sideshow is a technology included with Windows Vista that allows for an external LCD to display widgets, even with the PC powered off. This allows you to see at a glance the weather, if you have e-mail, etc. It's primary use is in tiny LCDs on notebook covers, though if you could use your mobile for this, that would be really neat too.
MS is working on an app that does work on the Wizard, I have used a beta. It was very bugy but it worked.
How about this:
http://www.innobec.com/en/products.php
It adds a virtual display driver to your Windows (XP); this display is an activesync-connected PDA.
I have tried the trial version, and it appears to work (allthough a bit unstable, but I was using a bluetooth connection at the time).

This doesn't work with Active Sync 4.5 and or WM6
looks like they might be scrapping the development of this because of the similar features in vista.

Hah, I hadn't tried it with 4.5; nor does my device have WM6. But in a way it makes sense to stop this functionality. Still, I only recently came across it and thought it could have given some people some ideas.

I wasn't crapping on it, I think it looks cool. I wish it worked for me. I would rather have WM6 than a 320x240 extension to my desktop though. I already have a dual monitor setup.
Sidewindow can be alternative of sideshow but you have to run samurize plugins on that display to look like sideshow. Microsoft states that mobile devices can be used as sideshow with vista, i have tryed many ways and i have no success with this task
I saw one of the Microsoft Powerpoint presentations on their website presenting the sideshow feature and one of the devices among the usual picture frames and things was actually a Smartphone, it looks like in house at microsoft they have done it but jsut not yet for us. EDIT: See http://download.microsoft.com/downl...56b-d47a59388df0/pdc_2005_auxilarydisplay.ppt
Just came across this:
http://www.zoneos.com/index.htm
It works with ActiveSync 4.5 and with WM5 (even though the ppc executable only states 2003). Functionality is the same as the innobec software: it adds a virtual display driver.

Works on WiFi with Server 2003 and WM6 as the client. Very cool, not very usefull but very cool.
Could someone post the Pocket PC and Windows Vista files for ZoneScreen? Unfortunately, the author has removed all the files from his site in favor of the open source release (http://sourceforge.net/projects/zonescreen/) which only has the files for Windows XP.
Best uses for Sideshow
The best usage of this will be with remote controls for Media Center PC's. You'll be able to sit outside on the porch and browse your music files or other media without needing to see the TV screen. This way you can have speakers outside and you can play whatever music you want. Added functionality will be when they finally make the app for windows mobile devices so that you won't even need a third party remote. With 3G devices such as the Hermes (8525) you won't even need to connect via wifi or bluetooth. You'll see all your album art, receive feedback of "now playing" items, etc. It will turn your pda into an expensive 2-way touchpanel such as Crestron, AMX, or ELAN offer. I say screw the laptops. Check out this link and then imagine that on your PDA.
<http://www.engadget.com/2006/12/21/ricavisions-vista-mce-sideshow-remote-does-bluetooth-at-100-met/>
All those complaining about why it doesn't work on vista:
You need ActiveSync for this application which has been replaced with Mobile Device User Center, so it doesn't work. I hope there's an update on the way to make it work, because in partnership with konfabulator widgets, it's incredible. It had it built in a case, and it displayed all the systems specs via widgets.

Air Sharing for Windows Mobile?

First things first, I'm not new to the forum...and I apologize for creating a thread for this!
So I was in the iTunes app store for my iPod Touch and I came across this ultimately cool app: Air Sharing
http://www.avatron.com/products/
This program lets you use the iPhone/iPod Touch as a virtual drive, available with pw protection.
Do any of you know if theres something like this for Windows Mobile Phones? Or if someone is interested in developing something like this?
There are apps that will turn the PDA into a USB disk. I prefer just running a small FTP server on the PDA to dump my files via WiFi whenever I need to.
Now if someone could only port a SSH server as well so I could tunnel traffic though SSH, that be sweet.
really? Do you mind posting up the usb app or something like that?
it's called wmstorage i think the most recent one is 1.8 you should be able to search in dev and hack and find it
what type of device do you have?
wm5 storage works really well, also softick card export will show on pc as usb drive. but these are not wireless.
wow thanks a lot for all the suggestions, though the wireless part of air sharing is totally cool. I'll be sure to look into the suggestions tho
So does anyone know how to make something like air share? I have the touch, since I dont like the iPhone..(weird i know) but the touch uses wifi so it couldnt keep a stable internet connection all the time thus not allowing me access files on it all the time as well..
Any chances a developer out there would take a look into something like this?
a Friend had Airshare on his iphone,
he come to me, had my WLAn Key...
he startet Airshare, give me an Link (from his Iphone)
i write it to my Internet Explorer at PC, and TATA, i can download or Upload Files to the Iphone
needs some seconds Time, that i can Upload Files to Airshare
WOW WOW WOW
this is really cool
i search as well an Ap for WM like Airshare.
Bump this thread, very interested in an app like this, used the air sharing today on an iphone and would love to be able to use my phone as a wireless drive. Ive tried things like mocha ftp and can only send from phone to computer not the other way. Appreciate any help with finding an app for winmo!
Thanks in advance.
edit double post.
I use mocha and I can send from the computer to the phone just fine. If you're having problems doing that, try using a dedicated FTP client like FileZilla.
Here is my good deed of the day:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-serversman.html
I tested, checked for any issues and found none. It literally setups your phone as a server.
However, it a very little known app. Play at your own risk.
Very kind. Thank you for your speedy response. This is why I love XDA Devs.
OK. Slightly delayed response here... However, I'm considering switching back to a WinMo phone and ditching the restricted iPhone... However, I would like to ensure that I have the same functionality on my WinMo as I do with my iPhone, so I'm looking for similar or same apps before I make the switch... Looks like "Air Sharing" has a WinMo comparable app: www . mobile-stream . com / airshare . html ... Mobile Stream's "Air Share"...
Does the mobile-stream work for windows mobile to use it as a secondary monitor for computer?
also I notice its only for bluetooth. Is there on for just using internet ?

[Q] android really faling here

coming from wm6.1 and having the streak for one day..i feel really a bit disappointing.
the screen is great, it's fast but..the mean purpose of the streak is surfing and multimedia.
so after one day of testing.
stock 1.6..i don't think 2.1 is better.
-lost my streak icon in explorer..so no exchange of files possible..it there under usb in the manage pc tab..but i don't see it in explorer and others
only a icon showing up in the streak saying...scanning existing media files..and it stays there.
- no bluetooth connection possible to the pc..not recognized..all my other devices had no problem with it..nokia, htc etc
- no streaming possible..not recognizing the format (codec), so no orb stream, no tversity streams, no direkt stream from the server (only one or two formats).
really horrible.
- no wifi connection to pc, only to router. tried everything.
damn if i coult port wm6.1 to this device, it would be a super mini mobile computer.
some things could be done but it takes ages to find the right app for it.
the pc connection is the biggest problem for now, been seaching for 4 hours on differend forums and nope...no solution yet.
some idea's or solutions please
EDIT: found the solutions..thanks all..damn the big screen is incredible
Right - it may just be that your windows drivers aren't set up correctly. Did you install the dell suite?
If you are on 2.1 you need the upgraded suite from the dell site. Also you may need to muck around with the drivers
see parts 1 to 1.14 step 11 from
Link:http://android.modaco.com/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=64083
for a good explanation. Also make sure you have clicked on the status bar and selected the option to copy files to and from the computer otherwise the pc wont see the sd card.
Ad hoc networking only works on Steves 2.2 (froyo) build release 1. Which has the advantage of being a lot faster as well and it has flash.
AS for streaming media -I'm not sure what you need for that - I copy to SD card and watch using rockplayer, I have seen people discussing streaming and all I remember is that people were using mp4 files, but not which program they were using.
~I think you have to remember this is a new os to you so think how confusing windows was on the first day you tried it. Android becomes second nature after a few days.
Good luck - and stick with it, I'd never go back now...
i try
i can see my dell on the pc now..after 2 hours searching
i installed websharing so i could transfer files to and from the phone.
the streaming is important cause i have a server with a tv-card running..so i could stream recording to the dell and other pc's around the house. Also all my donloaded movies are on that server.
i installed yxplayer ..pffff, makes me feel happy again..plays divx, xvids etc withoud a hitch.
still no luck with streams..but i keep searching and will reply if i find a solution.
now i have to find a decent app for making folders disappear in the pictures and video app..so i can keep the private pictures private in one app and see them in another app

Like a lot of people coming from windows to android their lack of knowledge about android seems to think that android is no good
Once you have had android for a while i will be very surprised if you feel the same
To me going from android back to wm6.1 would be like going from windows 7 to windows 98
Knowledge is a great thing and would recommend you read all the tutorials on the site
If you are saying that you upgraded to 2.1 and lost your pc connection, Dell released an upgraded version of the PC Suite that solves that issue.
Android takes some time to learn. More so from a nuts and bolts (hacker) view than just the general UI. However, I've found it gets progressively easier when you take time to understand ADB and the basic linux structure of Android.
Winmo, in my opinion, is way easier to grasp from a newbie perspective.

[Q] File Explorer

Where is file explorer?
Thanks in advance

We can only hope, but until then (and a whole lot of other changes) I'm going back to Android.
So far I actually like the phone. I seem to be using it more than my nexus one.
same here. I think it is the best wm phone I have owned so far. For a few features they exposed, I think it is very function. I think it is great to be able to use multiple exchange accounts.

Thanks! Been posting in the MS WP7 forums, but this seems more direct.
I think the OS has alot of potential with a few exceptions. The interface is an improvement for ease of use and there will be alot more apps than previous versions of WM but the fact that you can't sync to outlook on a local comp or even connect to a computer without using Zune really sucks. No cut and paste is an issue. Overall it has a lot of great features if they would just bring back some of the capabilites of 6.5 pro they would have a great OS.

I agree that it has some potential, and that the interface is alot nicer in some ways, but in reality I think it's a big step backward for MSFT. The fact that you now have to BUY apps and use their app store or marketplace is a big downfall for those of us who liked being able to store our cabs on devices and install them at our leisure. Not to mention that they've designed this to compete with iphones and android, which both are targeted towards the less advanced users (A larger market, agreed) but in doing so, MSFT has in some ways alienated its more advanced user clientele. No more bluetooth file transfers, no more custom backgrounds, no more rerouting of buttons or custom programs... Everything has changed.

[Q] TP2 => Desire Z

Hi all,
any of You jumped the train from a TP2. Care to give some comparing between these two. Speed / stability (stock) / functionality.
This is one of the phones I am thinking about, would love to hear your experience.
Ruud
Yep, I made the jump and I know I'm not alone. In short, the DZ is miles better than the TP2. It's much faster, smoother, and all the Android stuff just works very nicely. Tons and tons of apps in the Android market. No issues with running out of RAM.
Build quality is awesome IMHO.
I do miss the extra row of keys that the TP2 keyboard has, but I think the buttons on the DZ keyboard are even better than the TP2 buttons.
I'm still running a stock ROM and am not even overclocking yet (and huge overclocking increases are possible).
Can you tell that I quite like my DZ ?
Well, I did take a plunge a week ago and I'm more than impressed. Everything is pretty much where I'd expect it to be. There was some initial 'seething' issues with changing from winmo to Android, but after 2 days I got used to it without any probs.
There is one thing that may be an issue, (its not phone related but OS related).... please correct me if I'm wrong but only today I realized that Android DOES NOT SUPPORT BT INITIATED DIALLING. So, keep that in mind... it turns out to be a big obstacle for devs and can be an issue for some....
There are apps out there trying to imitate the feature but I found them to be a complete waste of time.
Other than that, go on, make a switch, you will not regret
sent from htc desire Z
Almost every aspect is better, especially speed and responsiveness, android market is lots of fun, as well as htc sense's seamless integration with lots of different services.
GPS is infinitely faster at locking on and there is no lag. If you have copilot for winmo, it should work on android too (deactivate 1st)
The downsides of Z: the 4 row keyboard is inferior, plus lack of directional keys (the touch button isnt as convenient to use), but there isn't much choice if you're going for android.
Hinge mechanism isn't a step forward, more like a step sideways if not backwards.
I've yet to find a good video player, importing ringtones or other system sounds is a bit more painful (others might disagree). Active syncs equivalent, HTC sync is ok-ish and makes life a bit easier.
No MS Office programs, gotta buy alternatives (can somebody recommend one?)
My TP2s battery seems to last longer in comparison.
And finally, flashing custom roms onto TP2 was infinitely easier than on DZ (I've yet to brave rooting)

Hi all,
thanks for your nice reactions.
I feel that the DZ might be a good choice, but some minor things are just unknowns to me.
To go by the topics mentioned by You all :
BT initiated calls, no problem, I am not using that.
@steviewevie, Yes, I can see You like it
I understand the keyboard to be worse than the TP2, but still better than the DHD or HD7 which do not have a real keyboard anyway. I think I can live with the fact that I cannot "bend" it towards me. IF I go for a keyboard again, I will probably have not much choice.
I am very much using the synchronizing of exchange mail, contact & calendar. Do I understand that the DZ out of the box cannot do this, so I need to purchase something, Which software is confirmed to be working without mistakes ?
Further I am using Excel to open some of the files I synchronize through USB (ASync now). I understand that the software to open or work with them will be another one, will the mentioned QuickOffice let me do this, or what other solutions can You this (I am not against paying, but it just should be working)
What about internet sharing, is this flawless ?
Thanks once again for your answers !

On my TP2 I used to sync my Outlook (2007) Calendar with my phone. I initially tried using HTC Sync (free software download) to do this with my DZ, but I found trouble sync'ing edited repeated appointments. I found that Google's own Calendar Sync utility worked well though (from their site). So I used that to sync my Outlook Calendar with the Google Calendar (online), and now they both stay in sync with my phone.
I never used to sync my Outlook Contacts with my phone. What I did was to find a utility to export them from my phone in CSV format, then imported them to Google Contacts online, and then keep them in sync with my phone that way. HTC Sync is meant to handle Outlook Contacts, but I haven't tried it.
I can't comment on Exchange mail. There was a bug with that in the stock ROM, not sure what the outcome was, I think there was a workaround - try a search.

What I am doing today is connect the TP2 to my PC in an area where I do not have any other internet connection. The TP2 will provide internet connection towards my PC in such way. After that I can go to our VPN in the office, I can use all corporate applications I need etc. (through Citrix) Main thing is I need the PC to receive internet. Today this is done by one of the options I get when connecting the USB cable to my laptop (Async, Internet Sharing, Hard Disk accesss)
I just do not know what tethering is ?

Tethering is exactly that. Yes, it works fine. Not sure about the VPN bit but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Bear in mind that with Android, we have the source code for the vast majority of stuff. So if there are glitches, someone can try and fix it without having to wait for the vendor to do so !
Made de jump few weeks ago... Man what a change....
Almost everything works better/smoother/faster/more stable.
Only minor thing I can think of is the keyboard and the lack of directional keys.. but that is just a matter of changing your habits...

Out of the box, Froyo does have basic ability to synchronise Exchange mail, contacts and calendar. However it doesn't have the full features of Exchange Activesync (like searching the exchange server and some security options like device encryption). As steviewevie points out, the known bug seems to be with Exchange server 2010.
You might want to have a look at Touchdown, which gives you back some functionality. The downside is that you have to buy it (although the trial is 30 days to test it out). It uses its own interface for calendar, email, and tasks, so they can't be 'combined' with the HTC ones. Contacts can be combined with the phone's contacts, but editing these contacts must be done via Touchdown's interface. See here for a review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJM46Rno3M4
If you need to sync with Exchange server 2007 or older, and only want simple synchronisation with email, contacts and calendar, then the Desire Z should manage that. Anything else though, then do investigate the thread steviewevie has posted, and also see whether you need to get an app like Touchdown.
Hope that helps.
ok but what about the sound quality, I am led to believe the Desire Z has a mono speaker so calls are mostly missed, whereas the TP2 had stereo, am i correct?
Hi Monomer888,
highly appreciated comments.
Had a look at the link, this looks impressive to me, I might really jump for touchdown if I see that the build in function does not do the job. But I will just start without Touchdown, we use Exchange2007.
Hi, kappo78,
I have no idea about the speakers in either of them. Why would I miss out on something if I have only mono ?
Ruud
The speakerphone quality on the DZ isn't as good as the TP2. Don't know if this can be tweaked or not, I don't recall reading that anyone has tried that yet.
The audio quality, however, listening through headphones, is apparently very good. There's a separate thread on that.
