New HERO device - Why? - Touch HD General

Why doesn't HTC make the Android OS available for the Blackstone? They just released the HTC Hero (very cool video as well) here:
http://www.htc.com/europe/product/hero/gallery.html
and the hardware specs are almost identical as the Blackstone -
HTC should make the ROMs available without direct support and let the XDA community keep it going (for those who want away from WinMobile)
I LOVE my Blackstone (especially with Dutty's ROM) but would prefer an Android based device if possible.
Maybe we should petition HTC to let Android loose for the Blackstone device (at least have access to the Hero ROM for porting)
What do you think??
Thx,
R.Fox

I don't think a petition would make much difference, people will still go out and buy HTC devices, so why should they change?
Also, HTC are aware of sites like XDA and know it would only be a while before a version compatible for the HD was created....so why should they do it?
I'm with you though. I wish the support HTC provided for existing customers equalled Apples who offer free upgrades etc

Android on Touch HD
If the specs of the HD and Hero are so similar, then surely it is possible just to port the OS over, as is? It is Open Source after all. It doesn't need HTC's permission for us to put it there. And as for support, surely the Android community in partnership with XDA-D would be enough?

porting a rom from a device with 3 times as small native res would be some feat

Hello,
first of all, I am new here and must say - really great work here!
Touch HD vs. Hero:
OK the specifications are almost the same, almost! Hero has multitouch, this is a step against Touch HD! Touch HD has the better resolution, if I am not wrong.
Windows against Android (inc. Sens): If I look on the new Hero product tour on htc - great - I want quite clearly Android! However, I am confident that this will be available on Touch HD... sooner or later, official or unofficial!

Unfortunately there is a slight flaw with that. The new device creation along with inherent new OS and/or Software allows companies to diversify their wares to a much larger extent than Apple. Whilst Apple, as I agree, manage to keep their users up to date with the latest and greatest they produce, the breadth of what they produce is sadly lacking.
It's a trade off and as anything comes down to money and a business model.

it's not hard to figure why
its a business and about making money
plain and simple

It looks that there is a hope:
"Finally, Microsoft's issued a clarification regarding upgrades from 6.1 to 6.5: devices that are already out in the marketplace with a minimum of 128MB of RAM and a 400MHz processor or better are theoretically capable of being upgraded -- it's all up to licensees to decide whether they want to go to the trouble of offering the upgrades to their customers. Let's hope, shall we?"

HTC already stated that they will not provide 6.5 upgrade for the HD. I couldn't care less for 6.5, but I am still pissed that I paid a premium to get this phone and they just couldn't even make a simple gesture towards their customer, I am seriously considering a different brand(especially when they decided to go with qualcomm again).

In fact if it's true, it is sad...
Companies like apple don't forget the customer; we see that users that have the first gen iPhone still get the update for the 3.0 firmware (free!)
But HTC can't make anything for the costumer; I bought a HTC Touch HD in the last Christmas, but I am almost sure that I will never buy an HTC device again...
And there is also that qualcomm drivers question... (they forget the customer after selling the product)

This wouldn't surprise me if it was true. Altough HTC release some nice phones I can't help but feel a little disappointed with them. Each new phone they produce is often no great improvement on the previous one, plus the camera and other things on the HD are crap in comparison to other manufacturers (except iphone). Would have been a nice gesture to allow these freee upgrades, but I couldn't be bothered anyway. No doubt cookers in here will have a better upgrade anyhow. I'd rather pay them than get a CRAP freebie from HTC!

May you state your reference because there is no such annoucement on any website. HTC did not decide yet if the upgrade to WM6.5 will include HD or not. NOTHING official so far.
unless you can prove what you say.
Is Microsoft charging companies anything for the upgrade? That might be part of the reason some companies don't do the upgrade.

Hi!
* I work for Microsoft
* I have an HTC HD on Windows Mobile 6.5 running smoothly. (not an upgrade, but a cooked ROM)
* There's still no official communication about upgrade/no upgrade or free for the manufacturers/paid for the manufacturers
* It would be great if every post with "info" could also count with a source containing official information, instead of gossip, otherwise, I could also tell you that Nostradamus predicted that the world is coming to an end by the end of 2009, and then post a facebook link...

Wow, apple had to upgrade two devices (with nealy same hardware and resolution).
How many device would microsoft have to upgrade? 15? But they are all different. Full QWERTY Keyboard, only Display Keyboard, QVGA, VGA, WVGA, G-Sensor, bla bla bla.
On the one hand I'm sad, if there was no 6.5 for the HD. On the other hand I would understand it.
BTW: I just deleted the 6.5 cooked ROM. It's nice, but theres a long way to go untill it's READY. I just hope that is because I had a early cooked version.

i second that!
for the money they get for the Blackstone, they SHOULD provide the upgrade for free
doesn't matter that they have 2 or 200 models. HD is supposed to be a premium product (at least the price is) but the functionality and support are far away from premium
as a matter of fact i found HD to be the most imperfect device in terms of functionality and i spent the most amount of time tweaking to make it acceptable
beside iPhone, take a look at Omnia - Samsung released so many ROM updates for it just to make the device better. and all for free.
probably my next device will be a Samsung if they'll came out with a display comparable to the one of Blackstone
farewell HTC, i am not a happy customer!

You are right, I jump the gun a bit cause of the twitter message from the windowsmobile team stating there will be no upgrade for the samsung omnia as well as the touch pro(=same hardware as touch hd) and judging from the way they handle thing with qualcomm, I just assume that they are not willing to go the extra mile for us HD users.
I feel the same. The HD has recieved little to no support at all and cost me near £500! Take away the great support the xda developers have given the blackstone and we are left with nothing!
I'm in doubt to sell my HD and buy something else. Official support is so bad, and this windows crashing and using so much memory are making me crazy. Beside screen there is nothing that impressed me on HD. I need to spend a lot of time to twaek it to work ok, not excellent. And this is all cooked ROM's and programs, and it's great but man gets angry when you payed about €750 for the phone and people from HTC are not willing to spend some time to improve it.
Not to mention that probably there will not be free upgrage to 6.5 firmware. Please tell me what was free from Microsoft?
Thanks to XDA developers for support.
Im not going to upgrade to WM 6.5 unless its a oficial rom from HTC !!!! SO CMON HTC SHOW SOME RESPECT CUZ YOU WOULDNT BE SO DAMN RICH IF WE WOULDNT BOUGHT HTC TOUCH HD!!!!!
But from what I hear, I think that the main thing we need is to wait for the new Windows Mobile 7 (no oficial release date and no oficial pictures, but Im hoping to get my hands on it!!! )
Lost of people here wanting HTC to foot the bill for their freebie.
You bought the HD as it is. HTC owe you bugfixes, but not a new OS.

are you serious?
wm 6.5 is a different OS then wm 6.1? as is, let's say, symbian?
and even if you were right, where are the fixes done by HTC, except 2 or 3 from wich, if i remember right, one did more wrong then right when first released?
and what do you mean by HD as it is? we bought a supposed premium product with a very high price and we assumed that this product does the job accordingly to the speciffications and the price.
and it doesn't unless you tweak and install a lot of things, and even then it works far from perfect
is not like somebody lets you test for 2-3 weeks the device and then you decide if you buy it or no
irony is that the Touch HD is supposed to be HTCs premium flagship product. Moreso than the diamond 2. Yet HTC treat it like second rate. Even the original diamond recieves more support. I think this is because the HD (due to its expense) did not sell as well. I will wait for an inevitable cooked rom with WM6.5in due course (thanks xda!) but after that im going to take a long hard look at what windows mobile 7 will have to offer compared to iphone before I buy my next device. I hate the locked nature of the fruit phone and I hate it not having a file browser, but support is way better. I know, my wife has one.

And how would we know which device will get a full support before buying it ?
Logically the most expensive device ( because most powerful hardware ) should get the free upgrades.. but this is NOT THE CASE WITH HTC.

HTC WM 6.5 Lobby Group

Considering the number of users of the Blackstone in this forum PLUS the other enthusiast sites such as modaco.com and htcpedia.com should we not start up a lobby group to petition HTC to get access to the WM 6.5 upgrade PLUS new SENSE GUI ???
I understand the HD2 is on it's way - but a lot of us waited for the release of the HD and supported HTC by purchasing it....at very least we could get the 6.5 upgrade OR an update to the TF3D (i.e. SENSE) interface...
Any thoughts ???

Agree. They should give us at least the new GUI.

I agree. Not because I want a wm6.5 update with htc sense from them (there are already plenty here), but because how they sidelined us, users of the "older" touch hd, touch pro and diamond. It wasn't that long ago, HTC. Don't try to justify yourself. Imagine paying big bucks for a HTC Touch HD 5 months back and now you read a statement from HTC that they won't be providing updates for you cause you're using an "older" device.
I mean, c'mon. Don't treat us like rubbish. We helped you to become what you are today. From a nobody in Taiwan, to the number one producer of windows mobile phones. The Blackstone was only released about a year ago (or less, to be exact). Did you really expect us to keep changing devices every couple of months? No offense to TD2 and TP2 users but the spec sheets of these "newer" aren't any different from the Blackstone's! Benchmark results may prove otherwise but the bottom line is, the guys from HTC releases new phones every now and then which has little or even no improvement from the devices their replacing and they expect us to keep up. wth.
I agree with abubakar comments...

And again you make a valid point - they should have an 18 month minimum on platform updates / enhancements.
When you go to the HTC website for support - for example "HTC Touch HD ROM Upgrade (For Telstra)" they quote that "As always, HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience"
Is access to either WM 6.5 or HTC Sense an example of "HTC is committed to providing customers with the best possible mobile experience"
Anthony Petts is the Sales and Marketing Director ANZ for HTC Corporation - Any one got any contact details for him ?
Can't really see a petition doing any good. The HD is a great device but it isd starting to be over shadowed by newer devices which HTC want us to buy instead of giving us updates for free. Why would they change this when they don't need to!!
I know that I'm very dissapointed in HTC and that I'll probably never buy new phone from them. Their support is very bad and there is so many new phones, so... I'm totally confused which I should buy for example. I have Blackstone and that's probably tha last phone I'll have from HTC.
Having been the owner of both the htc touch cruise and the hd 8282 I will say that htc customer support is a bad as I have ever seen from a mobile phone manufacturer.
Seems as though once you have purchase the device they forget about you. I have made my mistake twice and will not do the same again. I guess I will bite the bullet and get an Iphone unfortunately.
I have to say that I'm on about my 5th HTC device and only once have I had to speak with HTC support and they where pretty good. My old Prophet had a problem in that it was stuck in headphone mode! HTC replaced the mainboard and had it back to me in about 12 days.
With regards to updates to WM6.5 for example, if you brought a PC from HP with Vista on it do you think they would give you a free copy of Windows 7 when it got released? No they wouldn't so I'm not sure why people expect HTC to do the same thing?
What would be interesting is if Microsoft made available for purchase the latest build when they release them but then of coarse you'd be left with just a vanila OS and none of HTCs own apps. Unless HTC went down the route of making available all their apps in a similar way HP and the like do for PCs?
PS - I'll also be buying a new HTC device when the time comes!

maybe after the 1st intro of WM7?
6.5 sucks for me
and if Microsoft not gonna do anything about improvement then HD is my last WM device
It seems to me that if you buy a phone with a certain level of capability (or system software level) you have a reasonable expectation to support to maintain that level. Unless it's part of your contract at purchase, it is unreasonable to expect new software and enhanced functionality.
I'm not being funny, but I've seen similar calls many times over the last fifteen years. I've never yet seen them be effective. One of the most frustrating examples of this is the powerful video hardware, totally unsupported by drivers on a large number of HTC devices. Massive campaigns - no substantive action.
I mention this as a warning to people considering a new purchase from HTC, like for example the the new HD2 - it's a great looking hardware platform, that the OS doesn't natively support. Doesn't it feel like we've been here before?
I'm not buying another HTC device until the capability of the hardware is fully exposed, in a consistent way via the systems software, for use in applications. I don't see any of the HTC WM devices where this is not some level of an issue, in fact the last phone that I had from HTC, that didn't give me some cause for concern in this regard was Tytn.
From now on I'm only buying finshed, well integrated, mobile devices. I want to spend my time and money exploiting their potential and adding features I need.....not trying got get them to work properly and overcome limitations in the release state of the device. I'm drawing a line in the sand, right here.....

+1 I couldn't agree more! I'll be keeping an eye on the forums for the new phones and unless I'm satisfied HTC are finally using an operating system that can fully utilise their great hardware, this will be my last HTC device.
+1 to the OP, and I'm behind the line in the sand too
I read somewhere that if the phone does not have windows start logo button on it, chances are slim that you get 6.5 update. Touch HD has that button missing.
i prefer a good non official cooked (wm6.5) rom than an official one
So it don't really matter for me.... but i still think that's a shame!!

Because very few would pay for it, making it a waste of their time.
Besides, their business is selling new phones. Why cannibalise the sales of newer models by upgrading older ones?

In many cases they do - prior to Vista release and again with Windows 7 there are machines that are enjoying upgrades once the new software is released - sure HTC are doing it with select devices as well - but you have to admit that with the HD being just 6 months old (...in Australia anyway...) that it would be fare to deem it acceptable to offer an upgrade....

Agree with your comments here - and I would have no problem paying a reasonable fee to upgrade to 6.5 and HTC SENSE.
For me, i'd rather have a rom update with all the new focntionnalities of the TF3D ( newer version or even Sense UI perhaps !), bug fixes, etc. than a 6.5 windows for the touch HD with all the old things.... what windows 6.5 really brings to us ? a new start menu ? what else.... less memory usage.. i don't think... faster ? don't know really cause 'im not an expert, but didn't really see anything new interesting... and of course anything an application can do, freeware of course and without having to cook a ROM...
So, my point of view.. i'd rather have a new rom on old windows but optimized and with new fonctionalities !

Ever heard of a company called Apple and a phone called the iPhone?
Why should I buy the HD2, which will become out-of-date as soon as WM7 arrives in a few months, when I can get an iPhone and free software upgrades for life?
HTC need to become more customer focussed and pay more attention to the competition.
However realistically I don't think a petition will work. Falling market share might though.

HD mini meets Android

HD mini's Display is hVGA,
can someone make a HaRet porting htc Legend's android 2.1 and sense UI to this device when it was entered the market ,
is it possible?
I love HD mini,I can't afford LEO and Blackstone
Why don't you just buy an Android handset?
If you're in it for a small Android handset, may I suggest the Xperia X10 Mini, the name is something like that, when it's released?
Oh!
I love both of android and WM
I think it is possible to put android on HD mini
I like a phone which can DIY
flashing ROMs or Installing programs
Sorry, but Android sucks. Google even more.
If I offended someone with this. Then don't mind, just think.

I really like HD mini, as well: the compact dimension is really attractive, and I think it's a good comprimise between price and performance. My only doubt is that, as we already knew and as someone already posted, one of the main problem of the HD mini is the OS: I agree that developers will jump on WM7 and the device could be already obsoleto soon.
So, may say that HTC 'should' meet Android on this device to increase the market? Won't be a good opportunity for them since Android's market is growing? I don't mean now, but it's gonna be cool if they will realease a new Android's ROM, when WM7 will offcially be out.

Guess little chance that HTC will make an Adroid Rom available for a WM phone......they rather sell a new phone.....and an argument not to do this could be that when WM7 takes longer (not unusual with Microsoft......).....the HD mini has a longer lifetime and they will sell a few more......HTC has a phone line up where adroid adresses another market than Windows. They will not mix these.
As in many cases an android Rom for HD mini needs to come from XDA community.....
I think with the release of the HD Mini's twin android brother, Gratia, which has the same specs the mini has. a port should be easy to make, I guess. I'm not a developer but I think it's possible
First for realization Port android, it is necessary to crack the loader hdmini
(HSPL). While it does not happen, even to think about android on hdmini is not necessary!
well it wouldn't hurt to be a bit optimistic

Windows Mobile on the Hero?

Call me old-fashioned, but I'm wondering if it is possible to have Windows Mobile on HTC Hero - not as a dual boot, but instead of Android?
Are there any chefs out there developing Windows Mobile ROMs for the Hero?
I currently have HC Diamond and have been a very happy user of Makevaral's BsB ROMs, but I am getting HTC Hero on upgrade so I'm wondering if I can get WM on it.
I didn't put this question in the "Android Development" forum because it's not the development of Android that I am asking about.
Thanks.
Not possible, there are other threads on it if you search.

Old-Fashioned !
since there are (from the hardware specs point of view) great winmo phones, why would you want to go through the trouble of putting winmo on a hero? the hero is a great phone, but if you want winmo (god knows why...) just get a winmo phone, you'll save yourself a lot of trouble.
this is not bashing, this is asking why.
1. don't get the Hero if you're happy with windows mobile. no point.
2. get the Hero and forget about that crap.
ex owner of Diamond here
Sent from my Hero using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
winmo is immposible to install on hero becasue of hardware and kernel ..
Why would you want to spoil your Hero by installing an outdated clunky OS, that MS are soon abandoning? I used to have the TD - the Hero is just so much better for both hardware and software.
As others have said if you want to stick with WM there are plenty of HTC WM phones out there - get one of those instead of the Hero
buy a fake chinese hero which is identical to hero (I think - only saw it on a video) and has winmo 6.5 pro
Thanks for your answers.
The reason I was asking is because I've taken Orange up on an offer of a HTC Hero free as an upgrade. I was initially going to sell it because of my old-fashioned nature and wanting to stick with MS. But then I thought of asking about the ROM just in case.
"an outdated clunky OS, that MS are soon abandoning?" - I hope you are right, that MS are indeed abandoning it in favour of Windows Phone 7. I hope it's a complete re-write of the code, rather than what MS usually do and regenerate old code and put it into "new" OS's.
Thanks
I might have a play around with the Hero to see if I like it.
Windows mobile 7 is completely new, but will not work on any existing handsets.
back to android.
Android is great, fully customisable and there is no reason not to love it.

Exactly what happened with me - it was going on Ebay and I was keeping the TD, until I made one mistake and did this

One little play and I was hooked.
In use the capacitive screen is so much better - do not believe those who say it is a worse screen because it has less resolution. In fact ease of use of the screen is the one thing that I always envied iphone users for when I watched them swipe easily between screens without ever accidently switching on an app.
And Android, especially with HTC's SenseUI, is much better than WM. Because of the WM interface (which HTC did their best to hide) I used my TD mainly as a phone and did not get the best out of it because of that. Now I use my Hero for a lot more. And I have not missed my old stylus one bit - I just let my fingers do the walking.
Let us know how you get on with your little play - try the market and see how easy it is to get all sorts of weird and wonderful apps that you never realised you needed, but you will find indispensible once you've got them. I bet you will be androided.

[Q] the immortal htc hd2

why do not you make a petition to make a kind of remake or enhanced htc hd 2?

Sure, that would be great, but why would HTC want it? It doesn't benefit them in any way whatsoever. How exactly would they announce a brand new phone with high end hardware running... Windows Mobile? After which, how many people would even buy it? A fair number of people here on XDA maybe, but to 90% of people out there it would just be pointless and useless. Sadly, the only way we could get a HD2 remake would be to build one ourselves

They could just make their existing Android flagship product as open as the HD2...
I "guess" any of the top notch phone now would do - as long as there are developers that would take interest in it.
i think if htc wants, they can do it...release a dual boot phone, high end spec phone with wp8 and android...they can release it like a dev phone...seen an upcoming asus tab which can dual boot...afterall android is open source....question is will Microsoft allow it?
Hey guys, I do have one HTC HD2 (EU) as well and its simply amazing except the battery though...
And I can imagine the new HTC J (butterfly) to be the new immortal king )
After a long time HTC made a really nice HD2 looking smartphone, too bad its for the Japanese market for now
