[iPAQ-91x June 2009] BR is back! WM6.1 (21042) and WM6.5 (21815) updates - Sable

I've released a new build - 21820 - fixes most problems. Get it!
News:
Montecristo's fix for WM6.5 hardware keyboard issues.
Coming in July version of WM6.5:
- updated to build 21820
- keyx's suggested A2DP fix
- Montecristo's keyboard fix
Hey y'all,
Bet you didn't think I'd get this done before my earlier WM6.5 ROM expires at the end of the month, eh? WM6.5 build 21815 is the newest leaked build and is RTM quality; it has no known expiry timebomb.
I present to you the following June 2009 releases for the iPAQ 910c/912c/914c Business Messenger:
WM6.1 21042br0609 (cooked last-minute without testing - anyone?)
WM6.5 21815br0609
Both ROMs feature HP's newest firmware base, meaning increased max volume and other fixes. I have removed the following OEM junk:
- Cyberon Voice Commander
- iPAQ Tips, Help & Support
- HP Photosmart Mobile (and screensaver)
- Snapfish uploader
- HP custom IE homepage
- HP Today theme (and other customizations)
- Google Maps (old)
- Goolge Search (old)
Also the WM6.5 releases remove:
- iPAQ DataConnect
(...since the new WM6.5 AutoConnect feature does the same thing)
Both ROMs contain the following little additions:
- NumBattery
- GPS Viewer
- Backlight Controller 0.9.5.2
Once I get around to making some new OEM packages for my favourite freeware apps, I'll bundle those in the "m" series next month:
WM6.1 21042br0709m "motherload" - pending
WM6.5 21815br0709m "motherload" - pending
INSTRUCTIONS FOR FLASHING:
1. Get a microSD card sized 2 GB or lower (SDHC won't work) and format it with regular FAT filesystem. Copy my FLASH.DIO to the root of the card. Insert card into your device.
2. Put your device into SDLoader mode by holding VOLUP+OK(button on right side) and pressing RESET. Make sure your battery has a decent charge (over 50%) and isn't connected to any USB charge or sync cable (or else your device will just go into RUU mode).
3. Watch the magic... SDLoader will check the file integrity, flash to your device ROM, do a clean reboot (can take a minute longer than usual) and then go into the "Welcome to Windows Mobile, tap here to continue" stuff.
4. If you run into any problems, repeat steps 1 through 3 with a FLASH.DIO that has worked before (i.e. you can make one from HP factory ROM update using Paloma's instructions posted here)

thx very much for your efforts bro

"Bet you didn't think I'd get this done before my earlier WM6.5 ROM expires at the end of the month, eh?" that will be me~ lol (thought you must be busy with sth. else recently
welcome back, god Ben!!!
just flashed Monte's rom yesterday, so maybe flash your one bit later~
the 91x is truly becoming unbeatable among all the qwerty wm phones!!! rock on!!!

WoW!
Great job! I'm using your WM 6.5
I've just a little problem with the Titanium Weather, doesn't work :S
No weather icons at all. Any suggestion about that?

just running on your 6.5 now..
first impression? damn good!! (it also my 1st experience using 6.5)
oke here's some glitch i found :
-everytime i type using keyboard there is some delay in somewhat the same like i type using a keypad on my 610.. and it's kind a annoying to me coz, sometime if type an email address(or a sentence) after i type @(or a space) and i continue to type without waiting the half-underscore disappear, the cursor came back again to the first word of the sentence (or after the @) when the half-underscore is disappear. for example i always typing [email protected] but this problem giving me result [email protected] (if i type mail fast enough).
- and the capslock or function indicator near the keyboard is not showing at all
- the device is restarting my itself. here's the condition : i'm pushing the cpu clock to 624mhz (PHM), using wcdma network, and loading google using IE6.. and the device is going off...
another condition : every setting is normal, i watched a movie on coreplayer, and got an incoming call... and the device went off instead of freeze..
but despite all the problems above, i still enjoying your 6.5, but the device is becoming less productive...
ohoh,, can you give me a solution how to change screen orientation without restarting the device?
and once again i'm thanking you very very much for you Ben..

I couldn't get it to work either, and thought it was something I was doing. Hmm. I'll look into that.

The keyboard is buggy for me too sometimes; I have no idea why. These OEM packages are taken directly from the new HP update. Has anyone experienced this behaviour on any other 91x roms? I also can't explain the capslock/numlock indicator... it is a DLL that I am still including just like the stock ROM, but maybe it also relies on stuff from the HP Customization package?
Device restarting itself... that has not happened to me and I've been running this ROM for a few days now. Are you sure your battery connection isn't loose?
Can anyone else confirm these issues and/or confirm if they are present in Montecristo's ROMs? I think he tends to take his SYS directly from the keyx kitchen, whereas I'm usually porting a release from Da_G or somebody else on ppcgeeks.

Hi,
I'm using your ROM, I haven't that problem!! Keyboard is normal!
I solved the problem with the weather, was a server problem with accu weather!!

hey BR,
Yeah, the keyboard bug is present in Mc's ROM too ... I'll give yours a try, I like your style!

Thanks. I just tried out mine and the keyboard was fine... but I've experienced that from time to time, even on the HP Factory roms. Maybe HP still needs to work on their keyboard driver a bit?

I am glad you've returned! OEM hp which building are you using?

I'm using the OEM extracted from HP's most recent ROM update, BIOS 1.20.09 (21 May 2009)
...but I removed a number of files and registry entries to take out most of the HP branded stuff. Feel free to use osnbtool to extract my ported XIP from 21815br0609 if you are planning to build your own 21815.

Hi Ben!
I'm looking forward to trying your WM 6.5 build for the first time (first time using a cooked ROM, actually!) on my 914c, but I noticed that you mentioned using BIOS 1.20.09. When I clicked through to the link to the HP website, this was listed as being compatible only with the 910c, with SKU ID FB168AA#ABA.
My SKU ID is FB052AA#ABB, would installing this ROM cause any problems? The latest OEM firmware HP have for my model is 1.01.01 dated 28th April 2009, yours is more recent but I'm not sure if my phone will run with it.

I'm not sure... but I think you should try, since I'm only updating the OS portion of the ROM anyway. If things don't work out for some reason, you can always flash back to your own Factory ROM using either DNW or the SD Loader (Paloma has posted on this); somebody reportedly flashed a 61x ROM to their 91x and was able to get it working again that way.
My assumption thus far is that there are no hardware differences between the 910c, 912c and 914c that require specific OS roms.

Okay, I'll try it out later on tonight and post here if/when I manage. Thanks!

Hmm. 1.20.xx is only available from hp for the 910c. For the 914c the latest update is 1.01.01. The legend is the same for both updates: "fixes keyboard lockup issue and audio quality"
BTW, Montecristo does not recommend to use the 1.20.xx version of his ROM, he still uses 1.01.01 (which seems to be more compatible).
He uses SYS folder from keyx 614 kitchen but boot.rgu from HP 1.01.01.
Once more, if you want to fully update your phone (Modem part, Bootloader, etc) go to this thread, works fine:

It's great BR is back in town for more cooking!
I am still figuring out how to modify the hardware keyboard layout using the registry. No success. Only AEKmap (ae.inc.ru) seems to help...

hi
first I must say tnx 4 the rom and 4 your work
I have tested your rom and I have some issues
1 I-go8.3 will not load up (stop after installation –need sr 2 releases but will not load at any way)
2 keyboard, have issue unlike anything I have seen
sometimes if u type a dot then a letter the cursor will go back one step
(I think there is like t9 dll or something that gets in the way)
3 rom is real nice (good looking ) but a lot slower if compared 2 Montecristo
expired rom (u have more apps/plugins but looks like it is more then apps difference )
4 sometimes rom freeze
5 sometime tmail will not open and u will get sounds like stuck recording (DJ iPAQ) sr will stop this sounds and then u can enter tmail o.k.
6 I use opera mini as main explorer don’t know way but u cannot log into forum (like xda …) at all website I have tested user name will be o.k. but password will not enter the field (stay blank)
What I must point out is that radio connection and auto data setup is great
igo and opera mini are important apps 4 me
do u have a fix 4 this issue or know a way….?
Tnx 4 the rom I like it

BR,
6.5 is running smooth, thanks! I have tested every 6.5 release out there and unlike Erezyad I haven't noticed major speed differences between them. My 914c is heavily used for both business and private.
I like this release a lot as it is the most vanilla, neutral and well balanced.
Thanks again,
John

I have no idea what the issue with i-go and opera mini is; I don't have i-go but will test opera mini. It is java (as you know) and should be more or less isolated from the OS, so that's really weird.
The keyboard issues... might possibly be a result of me using a 910c-specific OEM base while you have a 912 or 914, but I doubt it. I haven't experienced the jumpy cursor lately, but I can tell you that I used to get it once and a while, even on the default HP factory ROM. Montecristo and I both use the keyboard driver/files supplied by HP, so I don't know what the problem could be. Personally, I suspect that we're encountering a physical hardware defect in these units - wherein errant d-pad keypresses are being registered when you press other keys sometimes. Try disabling word completion and word suggestions - I've found that improves performance a lot.
I'm not familiar with the ipaq dj (what is that?) and the tmail problems you describe.
As for the overall speed of the ROM, you are right that I have included almost all SYS packages from the generic WM6.5 installation (except for Autoupdate, SampleMusic, SQM, WelcomeCenter and WindowsLive). I think keyx and Montecristo (who just uses whatever SYS is in keyx's kitchen, I think) omit Enterprise, IPSECVPN and Transcriber. I kept those in because they actually seem useful for some people. However, I think my ROM has a bit less of HP's junkware than the others'. To me the biggest impact on speed is free RAM, and you can keep nearly 60 MB free on my build if you terminate running programs.
I have considered releasing an "l" series (as in "lite") that omits Enterprise, Entertainment, IPSECVPN, Themes, Transcriber, Skybox, Skymarket and Widgets... it would be ruthlessly pared down. But then again, I don't take donations and I'm not really interested in a whole lot of cooking of ROMs that I wouldn't personally use. I expect WM6.5 to be a bit slower than WM6.1 because of all the added glitz.
Bottom line: other than fixing bugs that can be reproduced by others (and aren't just due to the OEM drivers or OS, which are beyond my control), I'm not going to compete with Montecristo for "fastest ROM" or whatever. If the 910c vs. 912 and 914 OEM base thing turns out to be a big deal, maybe Monte will cook for 912/4 and I'll stick to the 910c.
Thanks for the feedback!

Perhaps a stupid question: why should I upgrade?!

Hi,
now this may sound really stupid to most of you since you are all very eager to have the newest ROM on your XDA's, but I don't really get it. My O2-XDA was always working fine, and when I read some topics here, I got the idea that I was missing something.
So I upgraded my device to radio 4.21 and ROM 3.17.03 but I don't notice any difference. Also, no programs have been added (except for the wireless modem application), and the ROM still comes with useless stuff like the Action Engine, which is useless since O2 Netherland is taken over by Telfort and it doesn't support it anymore. O2 England has a newer ROM version to offer, I might try that, but...
Why would I?
I have read countless topics on upgrading, also on upgrading the XDA to WM2003, but why? It's always "it works great!!!" or "I can't get it to work!!!" but the real difference (except the feeling of having the newest ROM in your device) is never explained.
So, someone, tell me what I'm missing here?
programs made for wm2003 dont always work on ppc2002
like voicecommand from ms
this is likely to become a bigger and bigger problem as time goes by
I agree with you on there is no BIG motive for upgrade. The only noticed differences are:
1. SMS better handling
2. GPRS "Always on" feature, but it's not that fancy except if you keep MSN messenger on (who does this ??!! ).
3. MIDI files for ring tones (never worked for me tho  )

That's true, but if you don't need these s/w you shouldn't sacrifice the stability. However, will this amount of experience in this forum it's not that complex any more.
1. SMS better handling
Click to collapse
Can you explain this to me?
Because my XDA already has GPRS always on (and you're right, who does that ).
Chances are I already have the better SMS handling, but didn't notice it? What is the exact difference?
Capt. PV.
I'd probably apply the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' rule if I were you.
I upgraded my XDA (and recently did a full hardware upgrade to an i-Mate / XDA II) because there were features I wanted (such as wireless modem) for a particular purpose, but I doubt I'd have upgraded if that weren't so.
If you're comfortable with your baby as it is, (and aren't slave to a constant compulsion to pull things apart to figure out why they work) don't mess with it. .
SMS has character count. GPRS always on is very useful when you are actually trying to do something with it. If you want to continue using old software that's fine. Same reason not to upgrade from DOS 6.1. But personally I like getting software and installing it without worrying about whether my O/S is new enough. Some of us just like to experiment too.
We also live in the hope that bugs and nuances will be fixed with each O/S release and service release. If you believe the XDA is without nuances in its original form then you don't use it enough.
If you cannot think of any single reason to upgrade - then don't.
SMS better handling also includes the 4 buttons in the dialog upon recveiving the SMS so you can call/delete/reply immediately instead of opening the Inbox item. This is plus the character count and the auto-name-insert feature after the first 3 letters.
The GPRS always on feature saves the time to get attached, but if this time is less than 3 seconds and usually the s/w is connecting automatically then it's not that issue (at least for me) as I noticed that making/receiving phone calls is faster when GPRS is off (I might be wrong tho ).
I notice you are running the standard O2 setup with the latest rom and radio stack 4.21, if you go to the rom kitchen you can still cook the same rom but you can add a whole bunch of programs to the unused space in your rom area, if you dont mind losing the bloated O2 auto setup and use the developers setup you will have even more free space. These programs are instantly available, use no ram unless running and make the xda a much better pda/phone.

Hi,
Pocket Quake II doesn't run on PPC2002  "due to a bug in the Operating System" so other software may also not work. The second important thing is Media Player 9 installed (with codecs).
do people really play quake 1 and 2 and other fps on their pda's ?
or is it just to impress people ?
because i've messed around a bit with quake1 and feel like a handicap'd zombie trying to gain any kind of control over the game
compared to how i can do it on a normal pc
imho then the controls of pda's dont mix with fps that well
the whole aiming thing require one to use the pen and i just cant do that fast or precise enough for gaming

Windows Mobile 5 and Magician - Why

Since this has always been a "hot topic" on this forum, I have a simple question for all you Magician users.
What are the top 3 reasons you want it / don't want it for Magician.
Here's mine to start you off:
1. I don't want to be left behind
2. New Mobile 5 looks better
3. I want to be able to use charts in Pocket Excel
Let's avoid the WM5 upgrade saga again. We know we won't get an upgrade for Magician. Well, not until May at any rate. (!)
OK - Here's my why not:
1. WM2003SE is stable
2. It already does what I want
3. I can wait till I'm due for an upgrade from my network.
No WM5,
1. 2003 is stable
2. the screen is too small for specials
3. I can wait for a new provider offer (WM5 should be stable by then)
Why not WM5:
1. It's a lot slower, especially at starting programs
2. Not all software is yet WM5 compatible.
3. You have to buy the latest versions of many of your software to have it WM5 compatible. Most updates are not for free.
4. The Magician just doesn't have enough ROM to run WM5 properly
I can't think of any compelling reasons to switch to WM5 that are of a positive significance (btw, I can't count to 3):
-CF 2 works on both.
-Security signing is a pain in the bottom.
-It's slower.
-Ok it has some useful networking functions, but it loses wifi Activesyncing. WTF? Not to mention ActiveSync.
-WM5 interface, perhaps the most potentially useful idea with the softkeys, but inconsistent execution. And I have some ideas about bringing some of the benefits to Wm2003.
-I have the Magician and the Universal. I was just telling my better half about the Universal users' experience with dropping phone calls being able to answer. It's a beautiful device, but once again, what were they on?
Ok, too many others, I'm starting to http://www.ladyofthecake.com/mel/space/images/alien.jpg]sweat and convulse[/url]. Better stop for now.
V
With a device like the Magician where the size is more phone-ish than pda-ish, I'd be inclined to say that most people use it primarily is a mobile phone with the additional functionality of a PDA, MP3 player, etc.
I upgraded to the HTC Prophet just because I want to have the latest. But now that I had it for over 2 to 3 weeks I can say that I would never switch back to WM2003. Single-handed operation with WM5 is very easy, intuitive and practical to say the least.
And when the battery is really low, like less than 30%, I feel safer listenening to the last few MP3s, knowing that I will not lose anything when the battery goes flat.
With regards to performance, I find it suprising how people find loading prorams on Wm5 noticeably slower than WM2003. I was using my old magician yesterday and the performance is just about the same. Th onlt thing I found slower on WM5 is changing the SIP.
Plus, WM5 can do without 3rd party programs like Caller Id, Photo Contacts, etc. cause they are all integrated with the OS. For example, there were times when a picture that I assign to a contact won't show up during a call with the Magician. This never happened to me since I started using WM5. And since contact pictures are synchronised with Outlook I don't need to re-assign them again after a hard-reset.
Finally regarding stability, yes there is software that is not compatible with WM5 yet, but most of the best software is already compatible. I'm using the following software and never had to reset my PPC:
SPB Diary
Resco File Exporer 5
psShutXp
Hitchhiker
MDict
TKCreator
MS Voice Command
and a couple of games
Personally, I think it's quite a stable platform. The only thing that annoys me is that sometimes Wm5 (or the Prophet) loses the storage card after being on standby, and the media stored on it is not always immediately available. You'd have to wait those 3 sec sometimes. But this will hopefully be fixed in the next ROM update. If not, I'm still happy with the overall package
Just my 2cents!
Meh.
Hokay. Regarding WM5... I have never come across an OS that actually requires a file that YOU OWN signed by an EXTERNAL AUTHORITY instead of yourself, and that purposefully ignoring this warning to install said files doesn't necessarily mean it won't be blocked when you try to run it (goodbye backward compat). I thought this technology was strictly for web only.
Stick to WM2003, at least it has the decency to trust its own owner. -.-'

I dont understand - what situation is this coming up?
Well, I have some games on my O2 Xda mini. I tried transferring them to my sister's new Atom.
Message I got from installing was the generic 'this program is not signed by a trusted source'. I ignored it and installed anyway.
But when I tried to run it, guess what? 'Program cannot be run because it is either not signed with a trusted certificate or some files are missing. Please reinstall...'. This was from an installer works perfectly on my Mini.
Did some research, Win Mobile 5.0 will also generate this error when you attempt to execute something with a DOS parameter at the back. It also blocks stuff that do not require installation; Scummvm 8.0 was halted with the same error message. I know the latest Windows OS's have File Execution Prevention but it was never as anal and obnoxious as to go 'I do not want to let it run. So there. Nyah.'

When I was using the I-Mate Jam (Magician) I really liked the "Photo Contacts" program they had, which was actually "Caller ID 1.6" allegedly from IA Styles of late. But it cannot seem to be found anywhere. I have looked from freeware sites to pirate sites and cannot find it. I downloaded and used "Photo Contacts 4.1" for a pretty penny, but it did not allow for animated .gif contact images. I REALLY liked that. Does anyone know where this program can be found? Can any of you remove and distribute it from your phone or from a ROM?

Why don't you download it from the xdadevs FTP server? There are the ExtRoms for Magician with the cab files.
But be careful, you seem to run a WM5 device, it might not run (and force you to hard reset)
Actually WM6
In reality I have upgraded my system to WM6 Pro now and I will let you all know how loading this cab on my Hermes does with WM6. I loved this program when it was running on my Magician (which I gave away to my friend/biz partner) and have tried Photo Contacts Pro 4.yada.yada, and was not happy with THAT. Even got a refund.
Thanks a bunch Dude
Only took a minute
I found it right where you said I would and downloaded it and installed it and soft reset and . . . when I tried to asign a photo it got a headache and gave me a message about being unable to use the program for somereason.
I unistalled it from the system and did another soft reset and while I don't have menu access to assign photos, I can open the edit screen on a contact and assign a photo there.
Maybe I should reload the program again and try accessing it from the Edit screen too? We shall see.
Otherwise, I think I shall attempt installing it on my wife's Blue Angel.

I installed the photo contacts on my wifes Blue Angel - WM2003 - and it was excellent - I only wish someone could make the same program work on my Hermes with WM6. It has the unique ability to use animated .gif images and I LOVE THAT!!!
If anyone could pull this one off I would be overjoyed. I have attached the version with which I am familiar. And if you can't make it work for WM6 - or WM5 - it already works on WM2003 really well. I have loaded it on a couple of Wallabies, a Magician with a new ROM and a Blue Angel - all with great joy in its application.
TIA,

"Rain in May, wipes your worries away"...

UBQ 501 - ROM cooking, WM5 and WM6 mix.

Dear all,
I read the forum since some months now, and I thank you all for the awesome things I learned there, now I would like to know whether something I have in mind is achievable or not.
I own an Ubiquio 501, a very thin qwerty PDA (with touchscreen, wifi and all) which works very well. However:
-With the AKU 3.3 ROM (released around february) it suffered from very bad graphic/video performance, but everything else was working pretty well.
-With the last WM6 upgrade (released in august) the maker fixed the graphic issue, but for me the keyboard behavior is nothing but unacceptable. It seems like I am the only one having problems with the keyboard, however a downgrade (to AKU 3.3) fix the keyboard bit, so I guess the problem is not in the hardware.
What I would like to achieve is to put the keyboard drivers in the WM6 ROM, what do you think, is this feasible? I was able to unpack the ROMs with the kitchen tools, but am not sure of which module the actual keyboard driver is, the relevant files and dirs (find dump/ -iname "*key*") in the
AKU3.3 ROM :
Code:
./KeyBDState_service.dll
./KeyBDState_service.dll/KeyBDState_service.dll
./KeyIcon.dll
./KeyIcon.dll/KeyIcon.dll
./keypad.dll
./keypad.dll/keypad.dll
./keysifter.dll
./keysifter.dll/keysifter.dll
./devauthkey.dat
and in the WM6 ROM:
Code:
./KeyBDState_service.dll
./KeyBDState_service.dll/KeyBDState_service.dll
---> same file as in WM5 (md5sum match)
./KeyIcon.dll
./KeyIcon.dll/KeyIcon.dll
--> different
./keypad.dll
./keypad.dll/keypad.dll
-->different
./keysifter.dll
./keysifter.dll/keysifter.dll
--> different
./devauthkey.dat
-->same file as in WM5 (but I guess it doesn't have anything to do with the keyboard!
Should I look for other files? (I think so
Thank you all in advance!
Regards,
DAniele
I have had the 503g for a few weeks now and love it. If there is anything I can help you with please let me know.
Hi maevro, thanks for joining
I just found (using a task manager) that stopping the "key sifter" service yields to a complete stop of the hardware keyboard (only things that keep working are the keyboard backlight and some "special" buttons: the comm-manager activator, the mode switcher (alpha, num), the shift key).
However, overwriting the keysifter.dll file with the wm5 version I was only able to reach a non-working state (the service does not start automatically and will refuse to start manually).
So, keysifter.dll is definitely (one) culprit, but additional testing may be needed to see its dependencies (I guess) in order to replace it with a (better) working version.

Is the graphicproblem totally gone, so you can play games and watch movies without any problems?
Also, do you have any problems with network on this device?
Keep us updated if you find any solution to the keyboard-delay problem!
Thanks
Well, I kind of sorted it out. The solution ain't optimal, but at last I can write my sms & mails as I was used to.
After many tries and file swap between wm5 and wm6 rom dump, I stopped the keyBDState service and... kaboom, everything worked as expected Yes, it was _that_ simple
Please note that there are still some issues (shift + arrow keys does not highlight) but I made this mod a few days ago and have noted no instability whatsoever.
The only thing that ceased to work after the mod is that I can no longer compose phone numbers from today screen (but in the phone app everything works, so I am not that disappointed).
If you want to try it by yourself, I can only advice for a prior full backup, and can take no responsibility for whatever damage may occur to your data, phone, sim card... blah blah blah ...
So long for my first post, although I really would like to investigate the thing a little bit further (and get highlighting back as it was in wm5).
To answer uggugg, I only tried a (mandatory ) Zoolander sample and it worked well (re-encoded to fit screen size, 20 fps, don't remember the bitrate, should check) as for the games... I really ain't into gaming (not on my phone, at least) so I'm sorry I couldn't tell you anything.

iPhon-izing my tmo WING: Some final questions: Numbers 10-19

(UPDATE July 15, 3:40pm Pacific)
I've gotten the answers I need to Questions 1-9 below, thanks! Can anyone give a shot to any question from 10-19 ? Thank you much!
I figured out a lot from my "part 1" thread several months ago: Should I flash-ROM to a better WM version than T-Mobile's -- before installing ifonz? .. (thanks ivanmmj, alongenemylines, and particularly robpet2,for getting me into the ballpark.
Summary of part 1:
1. A lot of really fantastic ROMS and themes here for many different needs, look at pureskills' lists, investigate them.
2. I've spent 2 months with ifonz "iphone theme" however, and it really works for my sensibilities, even if it is not the speediest. So I wanted a rec on a ROM to use.
3. Advice was: Yes, flash to a lite ROM, then install the iPhone-like apps you want, a la carte.
I'm about to do that now, I've read all the sticky threads and the Herald wiki, but despite doing my homework, I still have a laundry list of things to clarify. Hope you can help

1. Am I supposed to first install HardSPL to facilitate flashing roms? (I see that some ROM instructions require it) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358615 ( My T-Mob Wing’s less than 4 months old. )
2. Is this correct: If I ever have warranty or other issues with Tmo, I would remove HardSPL using DaMyth’s sequence? ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364543 ) to restore to unmodified version; yes?
3. Do I want or need this? “T-Mo Wing RUU for USA!!” ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321717 )
4. I just bought 8g micro-SD HC flash card. I’ve read of need, sometimes, to partition it first, to fool ROM installers that sometimes misread storage capacity. Should I ? ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=267475 )
5. I got some recs on ROMS to start with ((( you can use ifonz with papas rc5 rom, but you will need to disable the bs plug in and the UL plugin.. )))
(thanks robpet2 for the links to screenshots here, here, here, here, here, here, and here .
Is this the latest rc5 ROM?
[Update 1/July/2008 Herald|Wing|Micro] ITsPapaBlackDiamond_19949.1.2.0
Google Link 1 / Link 2 (Google cache, since I can't get the actual thread to open)
6. I know BS = BatteryStatus, UL=UltimateLauncher. After I flash to rc5 ROM, is there an initial config sequence where I disable the bs plug in and the UL plugin?
7. Top-Level question about what TouchFlo controls: Does TouchFlo provide finger-scrollable navigation for everything in WindowsMobile, and in any apps added? When using iphone-like apps like A_C’s, does TouchFlo conflict, enhance, or irrelevant with those apps?
8. Some specific APPS: I don’t like “ContactManager” from http://pocketcm.com/contact.php . It doesn't display notes, too many steps to edit, non-intuitive method of adding a contact. Do you have rec for finger-scrollable contact mgr that has large-type so I can use in car? (California now has “hands free” law re cellphones, so i’m looking for big-type interface, but with full functions of windows-default Contacts App. )
9. Every DIALER I see has no link to CONTACTS, yet has History. Have you seen any Dialer that has one-touch access to CONTACTS?
10. PCM Keyboard: It’s worked well for me while I’ve used ifonz. Anything better now, or is this still best?
11. Music Player: I've used MortPlayer, is there anything new/better?
a. Function I would like with MortPlayer: while it’s playing music in bg, I’m doing other things. I want instant access to pause, next track without having to get back into MP app. Possible?
b. MP skins: have you seen selections other than on his site? I can't find any I like, especially for CAR.
12. QuickMenu -- I really like this a lot. And it’s worked fine with ifonz. Will it work with papa’s rom? I change my windows hard-key to invoke QuickMenu.
13. Browser -- I like Netfront, but have yet to have any access to Skyfire. But Netfront lacks handy BACK button; it’s 2 steps away. Do most here use OperaMini? If so, does “StartOperaMini” work with the configurations I am building -- papa’s rc5, plus ifonz app? I tried it with my current stock t-mobile ROM and couldn't get it to work. ... or, maybe I just coudn't find the correct link to it to assign to an icon.
14. IMAGE VIEWER/ cropper: WindowsMobile's standard app is clunky. Is there better one? I tried A_C’s S2V, but it's problematic.
15. VOLUME/ Mute: I’d tried a few, didn’t like, but have you seen/tried “SET VOLUME” ? new as of a few days ago
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-setvolume.html
16. Is TRANSCRIBER avail as an independent cab file? I'm prob one of the few people who use it and like it.
17. RECORD: I also like this app from default T-mobile wing (audio notes) (not sure if its WindowsMobile or HTC, but it's NOT the newer HTC Voice Notes app, which is meant for MMS, and audio quality is poorer)
18. VOICE COMMAND: The only thing I care about is in the car, dialing a contact, by speaking into my headset's mic. With WM5, i liked the VOICE TAGS to specifically associate with contacts. It’s gone now in WM6 with their new recognition system. ... Are there any add-on apps that enable voice-tags tied to contacts? The default app doesn;t work for me because I force the order of many of my contacts by beginning the entry with 01_name 1, 02_name 2, etc.
19. OTHER: I looked at ASerg’s CABS - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1961488&postcount=123 - Do you rec I add some of these to my microSD “to have available” after I flash to papas rc5, or “No opinion either way”? He puts his name in front of these apps, so does this mean he’s tweeked them, or just made the cabs to help install those apps more easily to his ROMs ?
Aserg Hard-Spl.4.70.yan *** is this what I need to install to WING before flashing rc5 ?
Aserg Remove-Hard-Spl *** should I get this?
ASerg HTC Scrolling.cab *** is this an alternative to TouchFlo, something different; useful to me?
ASerg Advanced_Configuration_Tool_2.1.0.cab *** This is just for his ROMS, right?
ASerg HTC_Task_Manager_2_0_31261_1US.cab *** Is this different from X-button ?
ASerg Fix-SmartDial&Scroll-Contacts-US&RUS.cab ***
ASerg NoDeleteCab.cab *** Is this the app that maintains your CABS on storage card so they are there again for later re-install?
ASerg Increase_in_sensitivity_TouchPanel.cab *** any experience with this? *** what is it meant to do?
ASerg Touch_Dual_Dialer_2G_US.cab *** have you tried, is it recommended?
--- end ---- Thanks for any numbered answers you can give. It's be nice if my whole message isn't quoted for replies, but I'll be thrilled with anything I can get. I'm not one who has time to test a bunch of things. I need to get this phone functional in a way that suits my workflow, then use it
Get an iPhone.
yeah that's funny except WM /Wing has more
I don't mind snark, if that's what that was.
But WindowsMobile devices offer more of what I need and like, including Video and transcriber recognition (something I use a lot) -- and these are no small matters for me and how I use a PDA device. I also like this open community and the constant development, and the ability to access my phone's ROM, and the microSD.
This has nothing to do with iPhone envy. Even if iPhone had all the features I want & like, I also actually have tremendous issues with ATT for their unlawful pervasive domestic spying of every citizen in USA, and you know what -- that matters to me.
And fact is, other than some performance problems due to OEM software creating no headroom, what I've been using (ifonz, with A_C's apps, PCMkeyboard, etc) has been fantastic for me -- best of both worlds -- which for me is the point.
Only 6-9 months ago there was tremendous attention to all these iPhoney issues, and the ifonz theme release caused several developers here to abandon further development on their own approaches to similar interface.
All I am looking for is performance improvement and slimming down the OS -- which is why I inquired about how to achieve that, and got a recommend from several people here about how to do this.
These are all refinement questions -- since I'd like to just get to it and take the time-hit required to accomplish this and then rebuild the app-set and icnon configuration that has WORKED GREAT for my needs. And all of these relate to making good choices before the downtime.
So I hope there's more to offer than your answer. gracias.

Yes, doing a HardSPL will make it much easier to flash most custom-made ROMS. Highly recommended.

Yes, following his method will allow you to reflash an original t-mobile ROM in case you ever need to return it for warranty purposes (though sometimes the reps don't scrutinize the details, from what i hear)

That's optional...it's useful if you ever want to revert back to the original t-mobile stock rom...however most people forgo this after they start flashing custom roms. (you could keep it saved, just in case you ever need to return it for warranty reasons, in which case you'll be following the steps in question 2, and then flashing this RUU)

in most custom roms to disable batterystatus and ultimatelauncher, you should go into settings--> personal-->today and uncheck the boxes in the items tab for both programs.

not 100% sure on this, but i've noticed that the touchflo controls do have scrolling capabilities in most programs, ie word, excel, explorer, internet explorer.

in the default dialer (and i think most other dialer skins), you can hit your right softkey button and it will open up your contacts list.

I hope it's okay to say this (not sure of etiquette here)... but robpet2 highly recommends that I do NOT install it -- and instead use Flashing Center... and I am presuming that is because he is sensitive to my being a total newbie, and just providing an extra layer of security for me from doing something wrong in the sequence. btw, I don't know what Flashing Center is -- is this an app for Windows XP/ Vista? If so is it something I need to download ? (I use XP)

Now that you mention it, I now recall that. I have been using some addon dialer, and in that spot the soft menu item says "Menu", not contacts. Could you tell me is the dialer that comes from papa's latest (July 1st) rom a custom-dialer or the HTC dialer with unique skin. And does it have "Contacts" in the right hand soft-key?

DISCLAIMER: I am a n00b at cooking, so be careful and assume nothing. Flashing your device is dangerous - if you screw something up, sometimes there are recovery methods if you search for them. I take no responsibility and am not going to bother labelling this "beta" since I think pretty much everything you get from xda-devs is beta

Is possible back to the original HP 910c Factory ROM???
Yeah, just flash the official ROM Update from the HP website and you should go back (don't do this in Windows 7 beta or you'll get stuck halfway through - Vista or XP required). Alternatively you can take the HP ROM update, extract it, find the "flash.nbf" file, open it in xvi32 or other hex editor, delete the first 3432 bytes, save, copy to microSD card and flash using SDLoader.

Great that someone started to develop ROMs for 914c. I'll try it when I get a non-SDHC microSD card, does flashing really doesn't work on SDHC cards (I own a 4gb one)?
I've one more question, is battery lifetime any better on this ROM compared to original ROM?

Sorry I was talking about WM6.5 ROM this WM6.1 works flawlessly, it's fast, very stable and battery seems to be same lifetime as original.
Tower based location ?
Does this ROM include tower based location that is not there with the original ROM ? It would help Google Maps and Windows Live Search work even better.
Thank you.

I don't know but it probably has more to do with FAT filesystem format (as opposed to FAT32)... still, I don't think anyone is willing to risk bricking their device to save the $5 that a 2 GB microsd card should cost you... I know I wasn't

No.
We should assume that the problem is with a really crappy rilgsm.dll implementation. But I haven't yet found an alternative that is compatible - the closest to sharing the same Qualcomm chipset is the HTC Hermes, but I've tested rilgsm.dll extracted from those ROMs and it hasn't worked yet.
If a company like HTC has a phone that shares the same radio chipset as the iPAQ 61x and the 91x, I'd love to know.
I install it 21042 very easy like you said
For now there is no negative stuff. Speed is better then original ROM...
Benjaminries can we expect the manila soon?
And what is the different between
910c_21042_v1.zip 49.93 MB and
910c_21500_v1_3.zip 52.94 MB
Is it any sense to instal a 21500?
21500 is the latest beta build of WM6.5 - very different.
Sorry, won't be building an Manilla ROM anytime soon. I'm writing five papers, all due at the end of this month, for my last term of law school. After that I'm taking a trip to Europe for the first couple of weeks in May. Besides, I tried M2D on my last smartphone and to be honest I wasn't all that impressed with it... but hey, any enterprising user is welcome to take my ROM, dump it with keyx's latest kitchen, add M2D and build/release. That way the XIP is already ported so the rest is easy.
Incidentally I've purchased a Celio Redfly C8 from ebay, and that's on the way - after testing Celio's drivers I can confirm that they work on this WM6.1 custom ROM but completely break my WM6.5 ROM (and they're not responding to me RE: expected WM6.5 support).
So you'll probably see more development on the WM6.1 ROM from me in the future and nothing much for the WM6.5 until Redfly releases drivers that work with it - which should be this summer. Before the end of this month I *might* post a tweaked v1.1 update to this 21042 ROM, with a bunch of apps preinstalled (now that keyx has released a new kitchen that takes care of the imgfs size issue).

Update on this issue - I've been sampling various rilgsm.dll files from other phones, naming them rilgsm2.dll, sticking them in the \Windows folder, making a simple reg edit to point RIL to them, and rebooting the phone... and each time the cell radio stops working altogether (until I switch back to the stock rilgsm.dll in the registry and reboot again).
The Qualcomm MSM6280 chipset uses a 6275 cellular controler, and it appears that the same hardware underlies other phones such as the Toshiba Portege G900. That said, those phones also do not do cell id either! In fact if you look at Google's support notes, basically Samsung and HTC are the only manufacturers who have bothered to implement the cell id RIL API in Windows Mobile - so you only see this working on phones made by HTC (including the HP 69xx series) and a few by Samsung.
Most promising at this point is the Samsung SGH-i780, which uses the Qualcomm MSM6260 chipset and apparently supports cell id. According to this Qualcomm news release, the 6260 chipset is lower-profile and cheaper than the 6280 but also uses a 6275 cell controller and is "pin and software compatible" with the 6280.
Does this mean that, in theory, the rilgsm.dll file from Samsung's SGH-i780 will work on the HP 61x and 91x ? It is worth a shot, and I'll test it out once I find an SGH-i780 ROM factory dump. We may also need to grab the ril.dll and phone.dll files from that ROM as well... but I'm somewhat cautioned by the fact that the i780 is a Euro-phone (GSM900, GSM1800, GSM1900, UMTS2100) and, of course, my big assumption here is that replacing the rilgsm.dll will suddenly enable the functionality we're looking for.
Worth a shot though?

Umm... so that didn't work. I might cook a few test ROMs with other rilgsm.dll files baked into them. Of additional interest is a file in the Samsung ROM called GPSIDRIL.DLL, a GPS driver which appears to provide instant lock by substituting a "cell id" position until actual GPS satellite lock is reached.
