iPhon-izing my tmo WING: Some final questions: Numbers 10-19 - Wing, P4350 General

(UPDATE July 15, 3:40pm Pacific)
I've gotten the answers I need to Questions 1-9 below, thanks! Can anyone give a shot to any question from 10-19 ? Thank you much!
I figured out a lot from my "part 1" thread several months ago: Should I flash-ROM to a better WM version than T-Mobile's -- before installing ifonz? .. (thanks ivanmmj, alongenemylines, and particularly robpet2,for getting me into the ballpark.
Summary of part 1:
1. A lot of really fantastic ROMS and themes here for many different needs, look at pureskills' lists, investigate them.
2. I've spent 2 months with ifonz "iphone theme" however, and it really works for my sensibilities, even if it is not the speediest. So I wanted a rec on a ROM to use.
3. Advice was: Yes, flash to a lite ROM, then install the iPhone-like apps you want, a la carte.
I'm about to do that now, I've read all the sticky threads and the Herald wiki, but despite doing my homework, I still have a laundry list of things to clarify. Hope you can help

1. Am I supposed to first install HardSPL to facilitate flashing roms? (I see that some ROM instructions require it) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358615 ( My T-Mob Wing’s less than 4 months old. )
2. Is this correct: If I ever have warranty or other issues with Tmo, I would remove HardSPL using DaMyth’s sequence? ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364543 ) to restore to unmodified version; yes?
3. Do I want or need this? “T-Mo Wing RUU for USA!!” ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321717 )
4. I just bought 8g micro-SD HC flash card. I’ve read of need, sometimes, to partition it first, to fool ROM installers that sometimes misread storage capacity. Should I ? ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=267475 )
5. I got some recs on ROMS to start with ((( you can use ifonz with papas rc5 rom, but you will need to disable the bs plug in and the UL plugin.. )))
(thanks robpet2 for the links to screenshots here, here, here, here, here, here, and here .
Is this the latest rc5 ROM?
[Update 1/July/2008 Herald|Wing|Micro] ITsPapaBlackDiamond_19949.1.2.0
Google Link 1 / Link 2 (Google cache, since I can't get the actual thread to open)
6. I know BS = BatteryStatus, UL=UltimateLauncher. After I flash to rc5 ROM, is there an initial config sequence where I disable the bs plug in and the UL plugin?
7. Top-Level question about what TouchFlo controls: Does TouchFlo provide finger-scrollable navigation for everything in WindowsMobile, and in any apps added? When using iphone-like apps like A_C’s, does TouchFlo conflict, enhance, or irrelevant with those apps?
8. Some specific APPS: I don’t like “ContactManager” from http://pocketcm.com/contact.php . It doesn't display notes, too many steps to edit, non-intuitive method of adding a contact. Do you have rec for finger-scrollable contact mgr that has large-type so I can use in car? (California now has “hands free” law re cellphones, so i’m looking for big-type interface, but with full functions of windows-default Contacts App. )
9. Every DIALER I see has no link to CONTACTS, yet has History. Have you seen any Dialer that has one-touch access to CONTACTS?
10. PCM Keyboard: It’s worked well for me while I’ve used ifonz. Anything better now, or is this still best?
11. Music Player: I've used MortPlayer, is there anything new/better?
a. Function I would like with MortPlayer: while it’s playing music in bg, I’m doing other things. I want instant access to pause, next track without having to get back into MP app. Possible?
b. MP skins: have you seen selections other than on his site? I can't find any I like, especially for CAR.
12. QuickMenu -- I really like this a lot. And it’s worked fine with ifonz. Will it work with papa’s rom? I change my windows hard-key to invoke QuickMenu.
13. Browser -- I like Netfront, but have yet to have any access to Skyfire. But Netfront lacks handy BACK button; it’s 2 steps away. Do most here use OperaMini? If so, does “StartOperaMini” work with the configurations I am building -- papa’s rc5, plus ifonz app? I tried it with my current stock t-mobile ROM and couldn't get it to work. ... or, maybe I just coudn't find the correct link to it to assign to an icon.
14. IMAGE VIEWER/ cropper: WindowsMobile's standard app is clunky. Is there better one? I tried A_C’s S2V, but it's problematic.
15. VOLUME/ Mute: I’d tried a few, didn’t like, but have you seen/tried “SET VOLUME” ? new as of a few days ago
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-setvolume.html
16. Is TRANSCRIBER avail as an independent cab file? I'm prob one of the few people who use it and like it.
17. RECORD: I also like this app from default T-mobile wing (audio notes) (not sure if its WindowsMobile or HTC, but it's NOT the newer HTC Voice Notes app, which is meant for MMS, and audio quality is poorer)
18. VOICE COMMAND: The only thing I care about is in the car, dialing a contact, by speaking into my headset's mic. With WM5, i liked the VOICE TAGS to specifically associate with contacts. It’s gone now in WM6 with their new recognition system. ... Are there any add-on apps that enable voice-tags tied to contacts? The default app doesn;t work for me because I force the order of many of my contacts by beginning the entry with 01_name 1, 02_name 2, etc.
19. OTHER: I looked at ASerg’s CABS - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1961488&postcount=123 - Do you rec I add some of these to my microSD “to have available” after I flash to papas rc5, or “No opinion either way”? He puts his name in front of these apps, so does this mean he’s tweeked them, or just made the cabs to help install those apps more easily to his ROMs ?
Aserg Hard-Spl.4.70.yan *** is this what I need to install to WING before flashing rc5 ?
Aserg Remove-Hard-Spl *** should I get this?
ASerg HTC Scrolling.cab *** is this an alternative to TouchFlo, something different; useful to me?
ASerg Advanced_Configuration_Tool_2.1.0.cab *** This is just for his ROMS, right?
ASerg HTC_Task_Manager_2_0_31261_1US.cab *** Is this different from X-button ?
ASerg Fix-SmartDial&Scroll-Contacts-US&RUS.cab ***
ASerg NoDeleteCab.cab *** Is this the app that maintains your CABS on storage card so they are there again for later re-install?
ASerg Increase_in_sensitivity_TouchPanel.cab *** any experience with this? *** what is it meant to do?
ASerg Touch_Dual_Dialer_2G_US.cab *** have you tried, is it recommended?
--- end ---- Thanks for any numbered answers you can give. It's be nice if my whole message isn't quoted for replies, but I'll be thrilled with anything I can get. I'm not one who has time to test a bunch of things. I need to get this phone functional in a way that suits my workflow, then use it

Get an iPhone.

yeah that's funny except WM /Wing has more
I don't mind snark, if that's what that was.
But WindowsMobile devices offer more of what I need and like, including Video and transcriber recognition (something I use a lot) -- and these are no small matters for me and how I use a PDA device. I also like this open community and the constant development, and the ability to access my phone's ROM, and the microSD.
This has nothing to do with iPhone envy. Even if iPhone had all the features I want & like, I also actually have tremendous issues with ATT for their unlawful pervasive domestic spying of every citizen in USA, and you know what -- that matters to me.
And fact is, other than some performance problems due to OEM software creating no headroom, what I've been using (ifonz, with A_C's apps, PCMkeyboard, etc) has been fantastic for me -- best of both worlds -- which for me is the point.
Only 6-9 months ago there was tremendous attention to all these iPhoney issues, and the ifonz theme release caused several developers here to abandon further development on their own approaches to similar interface.
All I am looking for is performance improvement and slimming down the OS -- which is why I inquired about how to achieve that, and got a recommend from several people here about how to do this.
These are all refinement questions -- since I'd like to just get to it and take the time-hit required to accomplish this and then rebuild the app-set and icnon configuration that has WORKED GREAT for my needs. And all of these relate to making good choices before the downtime.
So I hope there's more to offer than your answer. gracias.

Yes, doing a HardSPL will make it much easier to flash most custom-made ROMS. Highly recommended.

Yes, following his method will allow you to reflash an original t-mobile ROM in case you ever need to return it for warranty purposes (though sometimes the reps don't scrutinize the details, from what i hear)
3. Do I want or need this? “T-Mo Wing RUU for USA!!” ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321717 )

That's optional...it's useful if you ever want to revert back to the original t-mobile stock rom...however most people forgo this after they start flashing custom roms. (you could keep it saved, just in case you ever need to return it for warranty reasons, in which case you'll be following the steps in question 2, and then flashing this RUU)

in most custom roms to disable batterystatus and ultimatelauncher, you should go into settings--> personal-->today and uncheck the boxes in the items tab for both programs.

not 100% sure on this, but i've noticed that the touchflo controls do have scrolling capabilities in most programs, ie word, excel, explorer, internet explorer.

in the default dialer (and i think most other dialer skins), you can hit your right softkey button and it will open up your contacts list.

Thank you so much!

I hope it's okay to say this (not sure of etiquette here)... but robpet2 highly recommends that I do NOT install it -- and instead use Flashing Center... and I am presuming that is because he is sensitive to my being a total newbie, and just providing an extra layer of security for me from doing something wrong in the sequence. btw, I don't know what Flashing Center is -- is this an app for Windows XP/ Vista? If so is it something I need to download ? (I use XP)

Now that you mention it, I now recall that. I have been using some addon dialer, and in that spot the soft menu item says "Menu", not contacts. Could you tell me is the dialer that comes from papa's latest (July 1st) rom a custom-dialer or the HTC dialer with unique skin. And does it have "Contacts" in the right hand soft-key?

SecurIt 1.1: Sim/IMSI checking opensource security for us all

I'm been working on this for a little bit now since I found all the existing apps don't work well in WM6 or don't work well in a custom rom. This is a open source program (as all of mine are) and I welcome help/donations/and comments. Bug reports will be helpful in this first release as I certainly consider this a alpha release at the moment.
What it does:
once setup at every boot it compares your IMSI number with the one stored, if it's a match it plays a little sound and that's it. If it's not a match, it locks the device and displays your email and a request to please get it back to you. It also send you the "new sim's" imsi and phone number via a SMS.
------------------------------
SecurIt 1.1 (BETA) by Shadowmite
------------------------------
TODO: Build in SMS rule filtering thus adding remote control
Lock out activesync connections?
Protect the datafile from being deleted, or keep a backup in registry.
NOTE: THIS DOES NOT WORK WITH CDMA PHONES!
Version 1 (BETA) Instructions:
This security applicatioon can run loaded normally via a cab file to your device, or via being cooked into a rom. It will require your phone able to run unsigned code (most roms at this site are fine in this regard). Furthermore it does require the .NET Framework so it's really for WM6 devices, WM5 will be more tricky and is left up to the user to figure out how to make it all work.
When first run the program resides in \windows and must run from there. If you ran the cab installer it will have created a shortcut for you into the Programs folder.
The application comes up with a form showing you the current device imei, imsi, and phone number. You need to enter a password (needed to disable security programmatically or change SIM info), a email you can be reached at my a "finder" of your phone, and a SMS phone number you'd like alert messages sent to. Once done click set. Finally, click Enable security.
The application then sets itself up to autorun upon boot and if the SIM matches, it plays a little sound file to let you know everything is fine. If the sim is found to have changed, it will lock down the device until a password is entered. Meanwhile it shows your contact email and has sent the alert sms to you with the new imsi and phone number.
If you enter the proper password the program will take you to the settings screen where you can reenter the password and make changes to the settings and resave them. Simply clicking enable security without making changes will keep the settings as they are.
Clicking disable security will remove the autorun entries and remove the data file the programs keeps at \windows\SecurIt.dat.
The data file keeps 5 lines, MD5 hashes of your imei, imsi, password, and also your email and sms phone number as plain text. Thus stealing this file does not enable retrieving the password or easy changing of the imsi. Deleting this file however would remove security. Furthermore activesync will still link to a locked device. Knowledgable people about these devices could therefore defeat this security, however it's goal is to keep the casual theif / finder out of the phone.
This program is a work in progress and I welcome help with modifications to it as well as bug fixes. Source can be found at:
svn://www.shadowmite.com/shadowmite/SecurIt
To cook this into a rom, you need 3 files. 2 of them need to be generated when you first install it like normal and set it up. Copy the SecurIt.dat from \windows and the SecurIt.lnk from \windows\start up to your rom as well as the SecurIt.exe file. It's that simple. Enjoy!
History:
1.1: Fixed all kinds of bugs causing security to crash with various sims
1.0: Initial release

Shadowmite, thnx for starting an "opensource" project for this. I havent tried it yet, will try once I reach home.. But I had a cpl of suggestions\questions:
1. Why do u keep email and sms phone no in plain text instead of encrypting them as well?
2. Instead of storing config in a file, store the config in registry which lessens the chances of someone finding out about the prog and deleting the file to disable security.
nice work as usual...

number 2 is in the TODO list...
#1) we could encrypt them as long as it's not a one-way hash like the first 3 lines, however those are the bits of data we don't mind the theif/finder seeing afterall as they are the means to get the phone back to its rightful owner. I suppose we could hide them but the phone number will be on his next bill for sending it a SMS and the email is displayed on the locked screen.
And as walshy said, #2 is certainly on the todo, but locking our activesync connections is a bigger concern and I believe completely doable.

ok, and sorry abt the #2, I missed the TODO part..
Keep up the good work..I myself was thinking abt making smthing similar but now I think I'll drop my idea to make a different one, as this seems to be a better idea (opensource is always better )..
I hope I can make some contribution to the code if possible..

If you like that software and have it working properly use it. Maybe you'd like to post in every rom thread asking why not use some other rom while you're at it?

I'm not using Mobile Justice which is WHY I asked what advantages YOURS had over theres for COMPARISON. If it had additional features I was going to recommend it for addition into XM6R3 (the next release of the current rom), but with an attitude like yours I won't bother with further review.

you dont bother with a review but bother with a slagging ... take your "fame" somewhere else...
Ok, for starters mine isn't based on assuming every device has a GPS built in (while technically being a Trinity owner I should go that route). I instead base mine on nicely locking down the interface so far with a polite message to get the device back to the owner. Furthermore mine is trivial to build into a cooked rom which was my main reason to write it. I tried every security app out there over the last weekend without any of them working "properly" and figured the best way to get one is to write one. In addition mine is open source, mobilejustice is not.
Now then, you said you're not using it... But the last post said you had it cooked in? WTF? Need some help deciding what you use and don't use?

1) The rom I currently have installed comes with Mobile Justice preinstalled.
2) I have not configured and am not currently using Mobile Justice
3) The author is currently taking suggestions for software to include in the next revision of their rom.
What part of any of those statements are you having difficulty comprehending?
Perhaps you and the gentleman from Melbourne should both grow up and quit reading an insult where one was not intended.
Well than back on track... Give it a try and see what you think. I really want feedback from folks outside the USA as I believe it will not properly catch your phone number of the "thief's sim" however if the sms works it should still get the phone number to you obviously.
The GPS coord. request feature is a nice one and will have to go on the todo list.
well, well, fights apart, what drew me to this app over the other apps was the opensource nature as mentioned by Shadowmite because I, like shadowmite, was not happy with the other apps doing things properly or just because I wanted somethings to be done differently..
@shadowmite:
1. I have a few ideas of getting "coordinates" and sending to the original owner even on non-GPS devices ..Maybe we can discuss some things later on once the basic structure of the app is ok.
2. Couldn't find the source code of the app on ur site..(May be am just one dim-witted dim-sighted git ) Please point me to it..
You'll need svn to get it, windows users: http://superb-west.dl.sourceforge.n...vn/TortoiseSVN-1.4.4.9706-win32-svn-1.4.4.msi
svn://www.shadowmite.com/shadowmite is my master repository for all projects.
cool, I do have TortoiseSVN installed at home..Will check it when I go back..
Will it sustain a hard re-set ? Dont think so.
@shailesh, for sustaining hard resets, it has to be cooked into the rom, pointed out by shadow on post 1..
I don't know if something else can be done for this (writing into ext rom is one option but that is not possible for most devices now)
Sounds like a great piece of software. And open source is a great idea too.
I did tried several others like this one (Eye on the thef, Ultimately Theft Alert ...) some features were still missing :
First an autoconfig method :
As already said, whatever your storage methode is (file or registry), you 'll everytime lose the configuration when a hard-reset is done on the device. The only one possibility i can imagine is to store your "installer" program on extended rom with the ability to add an external config (encrypted) file as a parameter.
Installation will be handled by the autoconfig process, using this external file. Config will probably needs to be stored on extended rom too. It's not peace of cake to create an extended rom, but easier that cook a rom.
This feature won't be very helpfull if there is no way to generate a config file automaticaly base on settings done by user : kind of export process.
On standart start/soft-reset, your program will run as it does actually, but when a hard-reset, is proceed, programm will reinstall unattented and will still be running after boot... No way to easily remove it. Bad effect is that it will also be difficult to update programm/config.
Secondly, i'd like to have the a way to "format"(or encrypt) a memory card remotely.
Do you thinks those could be part of your TODO list ?
Will try it on few next days and i'm ready to help you translating it in french
hi shantzg001,
thanks for replying,
My mistake, did not read the whole text.

idiot mogul user desperately needs your help !!!!!

hello everyone ! I just got my Mogul about 2 days ago and im a freakin mess on trying to figure out how to use it. here are things i need your help with....
#1 how do i transfer my contacts onto my PC? I installed the program it came with but i cant figure out how to copy my contacts to my PC.
#2 I tried to upgrade my rom(i dont even know what rom is,lol) and before i updated the rom it read ROM VERSION 2.09.651.3 AND THE ROM DATE WAS 6/14/07. after the update was complete it still read the same thing !! And the mogul appeared to be slower, screens wouldnt open fast or shut down fast etc etc. (which rom should I use??)
#3 THE CUBE, I was checking out the cube for my mogul but i wasnt sure what the benifet was of useing this program...its looks a lot for user friendly and cooler then what the mogul has now....(how do I install the cube into my Mogul?)
#4 lastly, when my phone shuts off i have to push the power button to wake it up everytime...is there any way i can just touch the screen or push a face button to turn it back on?
any help would be awsome
stacy
anyone????????
I'd suggest you visit ppcgeeks.com titan forum. Many more titan users over there and there are several custom roms available.
As far as answering your questions....
1. Not sure, i don't use activesycn for anything other than transferring programs to by phone to install.
2. I've posted a few custom roms on the ppcgeeks ftp and have had numerous compliments. My most current rom is UTCG.2.2.2 and I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with it. I don't add in all the extra "crap" some one people do. I use a stable base rom and update some of the features as well as tweak it for performance. My most current ROM runs with ~28mb free ram and is very quick. EDIT: I will post link here shortly.
I'm assuming that you're new to the whole "flashing" thing so I'm uploading a complete file with the rom and flashing software in it right now. I'll update this thread with the direct link to download once it's done.
3. The real cube is not functional on the mogul. There are many hybrid cubes that other members have made. Some are Adobe Flash-Based programs and others are stand-alone programs. I like the idea of the Cube when i got my mogul just like you. But, after messing with it so much and realizing the amount of resources it uses I personally don't think it's worth it. It's just another "gimmick" to compete with the iPhone.
4. I'm not sure why you would want it to "wake-up" by tapping the screen but if this is a necessity than here's how to do it.
Tap "Start" on your mogul.
Tap "Settings"
Tap "System" Tab on the bottom
Tap the "Power" icon
Tap the "Advanced" Tab on the bottom
uncheck the box "On Battery Power: Turn off device if not used for ____"
That will keep the mogul from turning off. BUT, it will also kill your battery really quickly. Personally, i slide by mogul in and out of my pocket all day that it would be a problem if i had it activated by the screen.

I would highly recommend reading the Flashing Basic Guide over at PPCgeeks http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=9927 before attempting any of this.
There are a selection of ROMs available for different needs/tastes, and you'll also need to unlock your phone first (its all in the guide).
But, all this is only necessary if you'd like a customized ROM instead of the stock Sprint release. Most people feel that the custom ROMs perform better, but to be honest, if you don't know what a ROM is or why you want it custom, I'd just leave things as they are. As long as everything works for you, just leave well enough alone.
Now as far as your questions:
1) This is a basic PPC question and not Mogul specific. You need 2 programs installed to do this: Outlook to view/access/edit your personal information (comes on the disc) and Activesync to talk to your device and actually make sure to keep all info in sync (also comes on disc).
Each program will work without the other, but it won't sync your info unless both of them are installed and the device is plugged in.
2) The Sprint releases have bugs. There was an updated ROM (2.16) that caused more problems than it fixed, so they pulled it. Now we're back to 2.09, so that's why nothing changed. There are custom roms that combine the best "fixed bits" of all the releases so far, but don't do these unless you feel comfortable messing with it for now.
3) Cube is a fancy interface designed for the HTC Touch phone. Its supposed to make easy shortcuts for one-fingered use, and has some nifty scrolling 3D effect that they call a "cube" (even tho it has only 3 sides. I guess calling it the "extruded triangle" wouldn't have gone over as well). But, it only works on the touch, so some folks have tried to mimick it by writing their own application that looks just like it. Most of them don't work, or are too slow to be useable, only the real one on the actual device called the "touch" seems to be any good. Its still cute to show off. Not all that functional on the mogul, and I've tried many versions.
4) YES! There's a setting somewhere to wake up on power key only, or for any keypress. The screen touch thing would set it off WAAAY too easily and kill your battery as utexas said. I feel the same way about all the buttons since there are so many that accidentally get pressed when taking it and out of holsters. However, the options is there if you want it.
Good luck!
Your awsome !! could i ask you one more thing? when i want to make a phone call and i go to my contacts list all of my friends names are backwards...meaning that their last name is showin first and this is annoying because i not showing up as it used to in my old filp phone...should i download some sort of firmware to change my contact ist set up??

Good luck!

Contacts can only be listed by Name or Company. You can however edit the contact to change the way the contact is filed in the edit screen there is a field labeled "File as:" it's here that you can change the way the name is displayed in the contact list.

Accurate, updated list of software for Mogul?

So I just got my Mogul, and trying to find software for it is really annoying. no list of programs with screen shots, each program type has about 40 different homebrewed versions, most of the stuff doesn;t have a lonk to download anything, no homepage reference so you don't know if you're downloaded a version 4 versions older than the current, piss poor instructions on howw to actually use it, etc.
Is there an actual list of software links, that is updated with the most recent verion, of sotware for this phone? For example, I'm interested in adding that "Cube" menuing system, and doing a Google search returns 50 different versions of 20 different pieces of software linking to pages with older versions of the software that doesn't even work.
Is there a commonly accepted "best" cube type mening system out there? how about a commonly accepted "best" iPhone like interface?

Um, there are literally THOUSANDS of programs that work on the Titan. It doesnt take a lot of work searching to find programs that are awesome. Try using the search feature of this website or ppcgeeks to find what you need instead of asking someone to deliver it to you.
Searching is your best answer. Making a list of the most currnet builds out there (some of which the most current isn't the "best") of software out there would be obselete in a months time. I've got the best results with trial and error in finding what works with my setup (hardware, rom and radio).
Thousands? I've downloaded about 20, and TWO work. the rest do NOTHING, due to obscure compatability problems, some random patch being required that no one seems to have, or it just flat out won't work, period. It;s incredibly frustrating.
Most have said it. You need to do your own research and on top of that what's good for you may not be good for someone else. In a way this is the fun part - the searching for the good stuff. Also, I take much advise from the experts on this and other forums.
In any case, you can't *****. The source of this software is coming from thousands of people/companies. Some write something good and just dump it on a server for others to download and offer little to no documentation. BUT... you pay nothing in many cases (can't ***** there). ANd it's almost always "run at your own risk!".
Want something stable, documented, and supported by a company... stay stock (OEM). Wait... my stock software was not stable, not well documented, and hardly supported (Sprint). As a matter of fact an alpha ROM I am running now is much better than the OEM software that the phone came with.
Willing alpha and beta tester,
tsp
Mogul w/ 6.1, 3.16, 3.27, 60711, NexVision Alpha ROM.
YMMV
make sure you are downloading ppc applications and not smartphone ones, and that you are downloading applications for WM6. If the app doesn't work then search the forums to see what other peoples experience is with that program.
while some of the responses here have been a little abrupt, you need to understand that your request is literally impossible. Nobody could possibly compile of a list of all the software that can run on the mogul.
Here are some things to try, though:
Search the forums for "best programs" and such things
Download different windows mobile apps and try them -- I've rarely found any that don't work.
Figure out what functionality you're looking for, and search specifically for that.
At the very least, if you want to post a query such as this one, you need to specify what exactly you're looking for. Our friend above wasn't exagerating when he said that there are thousands of apps that run on the mogul. If you're new to windows mobile, it'll take some getting used to. Be patient and read a lot. you'll figure it out.
Most people on this board are happy to help you with problems, but they do expect that you exert some energy on your own. If they feel like you haven't, they get touchy.
This thread might become a little more useful for you if you were to say what you are looking for (for example, if you're looking for a good program for maps and such that uses a data connection, I recommend Google Maps (visit http://m.google.com from your mobile phone)
Hope this helps, and good luck!
id say VITO SMS CHAT v1.0.1 is almost a must have if u text alot and have a stock ROM...most the custom ROMS have some form of threaded SMS added for u...but stock ROMS dont and this is a very nice program...i dont use this site much, but im on ppcgeeks 24/7 and i know we have a thread about it there...
also if ur looking for a nice web browser check out netfront browser 3.5 is pretty quick and it loads full websites not just the mobile version...and if u use myspace it actually loads the persons page background...its in beta now till may 31st, but if u search hard enough u can find ANY ppc program for free
I tried searching for a while now. After a failed ROM update I lost all my apps so I am re-customizing everything. How do you change the Title on the Home page? Right now it says: 'TELUS' but that's a little tacky. Can someone guide me to the right post?
Titan Apps
I have quite a few apps that I have been collecting would be happy to contribute to the list let me know...also in the development and hacking section there is a huge list of HTC apps that are pretty much always a go on the Titan.
I am new to this site.. I have a moguel.. and I would love to know what programs u have..please contact me at [email protected] with the info..please and thank u.

i'm a noob as well but i read a bunch.thing is there are terms and titles that make reading these threads as bad as reading the bible at times.i tried a bunch of stuff since i had my mogul.i removed a bunch of stuff as well.but right now i use spb mobile shell, pocket plus, fun contact,s2play,s2u2,weather panel<-------- wich is cool as hell but takes a bunch of tweaking imo to get to run right.(still haven't got my radar images right)gpstoday, thumbcal, and a bunch of games.i'm not an expert by far but i know these apps work fine on my device.
this is pretty confusing but this is the index i use to keep track of all the apps that both work and are user-friendly(to an extent).
its kind of hard to understand of you havent written it but what ever
if you have any questions feel free to ask.
EDIT:btw i have all of these stored. (as in .cabs, .exes....)

By the way, the cube isn't all its made out to be. TouchFLO is worth it, but I find myself constantly bringing up the cube on accident, not to mention that its stays in the background after launching. (eating up 8-9% of memory) It's nice to play with, and its great for showing off the capabilities of the phone but in the end, for me, it just wasn't worth it.
Then again, to each their own. Truly, TRY programs out. People like different things so you can't always trust a stranger to give you accurate advice.
I was once a "noob," having switched from Palm to come over to the "dark side" (remind me of the Mac vs PC thing). I have the VZW XV6800 with DCD's 2.3.2 rom onboard. I have thrashed and trashed my poor PPC many times before getting it stable the way I want. I have the following recommendations to all "noobs" who want to see "what works and what doesn't."
1) Don't fear the hard reset. If things go completely screwy, simply start from scratch. I store all my cab files on the card for this purpose. BTW, I have never needed to call Verizon after a hard reset. I simply *228 to program the SPL and "everyting is irie mon."
2) Make every effort to find the answer yourself before posting a question anywhere. You are likely not the first person to have whatever problem you think you have. To coin a phrase, "the truth is out there." If you don't have the time to search for the answer, you probably shouldn't be putsing (a technical term) with your phone. Check here and over at PPCGeeks.
3) Figure out which base application you cannot live without. ake sure that each works with the other by soft resetting after each install and working the phone a bit before loading another. My base for instance is: SPB Mobile Shell 2; PhoneWeaver; WisBar Advance; Live Search; Google Maps; Opera Mini 4; Resco Backup; Resco file Explorer; and SK Tools. I know they work well, and work together. I always load these first after a hard reset.
4) Get a good backup program (Sprite, SPB Backup, Resco), and use it daily or at least before each new testing round.
5) Backup your registry and save the backup in a safe place (card) in case.
6) Test new applications one at a time, with soft reset after each installation. Do not load another new app, until you are sure that you're happy with the previoous one or have fully uninstalled it.
7) Have fun! Be happy! Don't forget that it's just a damned phone with benefits.
those are some nice tips for someone who is new jgilfor. do you mind if i quoted you in my sig or something? (pm me)
warez i use
After going through this thread, i decided to add the apps i run to my sig. When i get home i'll add some more.
I don't know if it's a good idea or not but maybe i could throw up a page with links to the software? Unless i can upload them all here.
What do you vets think?
It's probably a better request to ask for the programs that each person uses. That's more useful than trying to get a list of every single program out there. With a program name and some patience, then you should be able to find the right install file. If not, then this phone was probably not meant for you, sorry. =( Maybe a Nokia? lol, j/k!
Anyways, I like GhettoBSD's idea! I keep a list of programs that I use so that I know what to reinstall after a ROM flash:
Nilisco Flashlight
HTC Voice Recorder
HTC Home and emunutz HTC Home Customizer
HTC Audio Manager
Skunkworks FlashVideoBundle and TCPMP
Lordsmiff Battery Level
Jorrit Jongma WMWifiRouter
JRebeiro EsmertecJbed and Opera Mini
Stroths-Codyppc Led Killer 3.1
Oxios Memory
CooTek Cooperation Touchpal
GoogleMaps
PPCpimBackup
TomCo Solutions Stopwatch
Do you have a link for the HTC voice recorder that works with Mogul, I tried some but are not working. Cab installs the application, but when trying to record, always get an empty fie of 6b. No matter how long I record always have an empty file named voice00x with size of 6b. Or whay Im doing wrong? I installed the same file in a tytn and works perfect.
Here is what i use
Opera mini (great little browser)
DinarSoft MemMaid ( cleans out junk and temp/ frees memory too)
DinarSoft Handyswitcher (awesome taskbar app with cpu /memory usage that can be on top toolbar in every ap)
Shape Services IM+ ( great instant messanging app )
PPC geeks battery and performance reg hack
acbPowerMeter ( shows how much power apps consume, good for measuring 3g versus no internet use )
Blue Frog Touch Dialer, (htc diamond style dialer , skinable , bigger button layout very cool )
Led Killer 3.1 ( disables annoying flashing green service led )
HTC home plugin schen 2.10 ( nice gui mod, for weather and apps)
Youtubeplay
Total Commander
lokmeup IE Slow Scroll Fix
Google maps
Cloudyfa EsmertecJbed ( java)
PocketCM keyboard
RARLab pocket rar
Sipchange ( change keyboard tool )
someguy sMMS ( adds ability to send picture sms , providing you get your key from the sprint website)
PocketIRC ( mirc application)
Oxios memory ( free tool to free up unused memory)
TRE Pocket PC (free registry editor)

Should I flash-ROM to a better WM version than T-Mobile's -- before installing ifonz?

I am not a developer; just an end-user. But I've read tons of threads, wiki entries for Herald, etc -- and I can't figure out the sequencing of what to install on my T-Mobile WING.
Everything I've read says that these OEM versions of windows come loaded down with crap that wastes device storage, and hampers performance. But I have been scratching my head trying to figure this out:
I for sure am using ifonz theme -- I have been using it for past week installed onto the T-Mobile default default, and the navigation system is so great, I love it. But I get lots of Memory error messages and freezes if I run ifonz, MortPlayer, and a browser such as NetFront or OperaMini... Just not enough memory avail to handle it all.
From reading, I have seen that various ROMs cooked here have performance boosts (whether it involves overclocking or whatever). So my question is: which ROM is best for this purpose for me -- to be the underlying windows OS running that enables me to run ifonz and several other apps without this problem?
What confuses me is that ROMs seem to be OS tweeks PLUS UI display functionality -- such as emulating the HTC Touch etc. I just can't decode all of this to understand what elements are best for my needs, and which components MUST be on device vs storage card, and which would be optimal to install on storage card so as to leave headroom on device?
I also have installed PCM Keyboard (but I can't get it to stick as the default keyboard; the windows one always comes back), MortPlayer, Comm Manager (love this!). I am so impressed by the current ifonz theme. I read the whole thread from its first release and practically every suggestion has been implemented -- that is so impressive. (I wont bog down this topic further.)
All suggestions appreciated. And thank you. I will be donating to each component's authors. Y'all are the best! I can't believe the productivity difference since modifyng my PoclketPC. Now I can actually use the many aps and utilities!

It really depends on your likes and disliked. Try a few and see which one fits you best.
As far as the stock ROM goes:
ROM: Stock ROM vs Just2Clean
RAM: 11mb free vs 32mb free
Storage: 26mb free vs 65mb free
So yes, a custom ROM should solve the memory issues. ^_^
Okay, thanks. so would you want to put me into the ballpark of which ROMs are lean and most efficient for my needs?
If you're suggesting the DESCRIPTIONS of the various ROMS will make that obvious to me, well, okay... but I could use some recs...
Also: A followup for my grasping the concept:
When most people here are cooking up these custom ROMs, they are selecting various apps to stitch together into on overall release, right?
If so, I am trying to understand if there are appreciable differences between
(a) A stripped bare custom ROM.... and then my then adding and manually installing a la carte cab files for things like S2U2, Comm Manager, Mort Player, etc ...
and
(b) starting with a ROM that has those aps integrated into the one cab file?
That's too hard for a lay person to understand without an expert explaining, so I hope someone will do that.
If (b) actually enables efficiencies in performance, I would obviously want to use one of those ROMS.
If they are 6 of one and half dozen of another, and no code difference whatsoever as pertains to the way those individual apps perform within the package, then I guess it doesn't matter much at all.
Should I be posting to a different forum -- like maybe the Herald forum, to get specific recommendations on which ROMS would be god for me to start ourt with knowing that my end game is to run ifonz and similar iphone-like applications?
thanks!

it all depends on what you want... if you want to use apps that you only like and dont like the ones that people have cooked, go with a lite rom or a clean rom.. if some of the apps and configs that the cooks have made work for you go with the ones that are fully loaded...
ivans roms are usally neked roms ( bare bones roms that run fast and efficent because he took out all the junk that you dont need, and that also slow the rom down )...
papa has a good rom out right now even though he has it customized you can still dissable some of the stuff on his rom and tweak it how u want...
for more info on the roms for the wing check out pureskillzzz thread on the roms of xda...
im going back to watching the basketball game...

edit
if you like ifonz ( which I did too when i first saw it - its a good app) read up on ultimate launch or throttle launcher which takes the ifonz concept to another level... ultimate launch is good because you can customize it to look like ifonz with the icons, but you have more power with your device... ifonz is a ipod type launcher and it also drains the phones memory.
thanks very much!... that's interesting re other launchers and performance. (i know i'm in over my head but is that because ifonz was written in .NET vs native code ? i thiught i read that somewhere).
QUESTION: is there a "Browse by Photo Gallery" forum or wiki section... that lets one see the look/UI of the theme, launcher, etc of the various roms, as a means for narrowing down choices?
thx

nah but you can check out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395793
and read thru the reviews...
I recomend ttrans or papamops roms... then itjes, and ivans roms... the first 2 cause those are the ones that i have tried....
what are you looking for in a rom... read the link that i gave you about the reviews of most of the roms on here
I didn't know there are these many ROMs out there now... WOW what a collection!
To OP: to make your pcm keyboard sticky, search for SIP change. This utility will automatically change to whatever SIP you choose after reboot so you don't have to manually select it.
everyone's gonna recommend something different. i personally prefer just2clean. it's exactly that. smooth, fast, and clean. honestly, of all the roms i've ever flashed, it's the only one that i've had absolutely zero issues with. i don't mind taking the time to install each program i really want. most of the other roms come with lots of extra programs that i have no use for, and can't delete, since there isn't an add/remove item for them... they're cooked in with the rom.
so really, it all just come down to your own preference. just check the herald rom development section. i think pureskillz (maybe?) did a write up on various roms and his pros and cons on each.

yes that is true, but the point of trying different roms is seeing what programs and configs that you like the best, then after time ( how ever long the herald is around ) you will try a lite rom or clean rom and add the programs that you want to it... thats what im doing right now... there are a few that are great from the get go, but sometimes you dont need all that extra stuff...
that brings me back to the original question what do you want in the rom that you flash ??
thanks so much! This is exactly what I have been seeking... some kind of top-level context.
I love this community... and thank you for your personal recs as well.

Another of my primary questions answered. Thanks so much! I was trying to learn the practical differences between apps cooks in, and installing cab files a la carte.
My own recap:
(1) YES, flash to a better ROM to free up memory, remove OEM junk
(2) There is no gallery of ROM photos of interfaces, but a great REVIEW thread of lots of ROMS
(3) Apps as part of the ROM makes them unremoveable.
(that recap's for other newbies like me!)

i have slide shows of 2 herald roms and 1 wizard rom in my sig...
right now im running pappamops rom and its very good, good to use right away, just a little tweaking, has alot of storage and its fast, plus you can dissable anything that you dont want to use right now( mainly Ultimate Launch ) you will need batterystatus ( you can disable the theme )... one of the best roms if you like to put your own stuff on the phone...

Custom ROM Feature requests

A bit of 'customer feedback' etc:
I was going to ask a question, because I have a specific request, but then thought rather than limit the thread why not make it a general feature request for custom ROMs, for people to come up with new ideas etc for our esteemed cooks to implement.
Anyway, this is my request:
Can we have a 'delete' icon on the SMS and Email tabs in Sense, so we can delete junk emails as they arrive without having to open them first?
Thanks
Paul.
some requests from the Chefs
1 - transparency all over, everywhere.
2 - no curtains anywhere
3 - small sized colour icon pack for taskbar, notifications, startbutton
4 - built in Slide-2-Unlock (ask the devs)
5 - all stock photo's , stock stocks, stock footprints delete
6 - clock packs in cabs with installation. Clock with seconds
7 - actionscreen on endcall button and left softkey
8 - preinstall my own application Reperion (find your phone back after theft)
9 - Organized startmenu !!!! All these freaking icons need to much scrolling!
10- built in ACR HD2 (automatic call recording)
11 built in musicID latest version
etc etc.. let the cooking begin
stable, stable , very stable ~
Hope this gonna be true
Sense 2.1!
I wish I could have the folowing.
- Without Copilot8 trial
- WM messaging (not HTC messaging) by default
Well. that's all..
Something that I'd definitely want is a simple and useful task manager that would make switching between say the music player and browser much less of a chore(I have the taskmanager on my startscreen as a quick launch icon). Just mapping the current task manager to one of the hard buttons would suffice.
* Super-fast.
* Loads of free ROM space - dump all unneeded crap like wallpapers and ringtones as separate cabs
* WM 6.5.x (a must!)
* Stock Manila with options to customise
* Dump Jblend for Jbed. Jbed is sooo much faster
* Microsoft Bluetooth Stack... if possible (probably not).
1- delete button on the email tab
2- graphical task switcher (similar to Windows 7) with touch scrolling through tasks
3- larger buttons (see NRJ Blackstone ROMs)
4- enable windows Mobile contacts in HTC "People" so you don't have to use the Windows Contacts application to create Windows Live contacts.
5- Ported Google Maps Navigation application from Android
6- enable importing of facebook phone numbers when linking contact to facebook, currently only birthday and picture are being imported.
Don't know if this is possible but
1. Option to save all e-mail (not just attachments) from all accounts to microSD
2. Import facebook birthday from contacts to calendar
3. Eliminate bugs with alarm app, sometimes I have to press 2-3 times to get into app
- Without Copilot8 trial
- WM messaging (not HTC messaging) by default
The Main to reqeusts, get rid of the buggy HTC messaging and CoPilot trial to save space!
- as close to stock as possible.
- option to have chinese traditional support (dislay/keyboard)
Dont take this the wrong way but..
Many chefs here choose to make their ROMs to fit the "market", to please as many as possible. So changes as, transparency there, transparency here, app this, app that. Its just to specific to each induvidual that want a cooked ROM.
Dont get me wrong, its good that you guys tell the/us chefs what you want. But this could just be done in the chefs ROM threads instead.
Just read the posts. Many of you takes up the same things. If you want a ROM that fist all youre needs, cook it youre self (Or talk to a nice chef to do if for you?).
Just my 2 cents..

I couldn't agree more. I don't "cook" myself, but I'm an avid taster
I would personally LOVE to see a ROM with nothing but the basics on there, along with a list of CABs, in order to install anything not included. That way, we can have a real lite version of the OS & GUI, and customize the software ourselves. I'm just after more space, and less of what I don't actually want!

Excactly.. There are UC comp ROMs and SHASHIMI to tweak the phone after HR, so just cooking some stuff in it is worse imo. I just dont se the point.

The only advantage I see is fast setup after hard reset if all the settings and tweaks are included in a ROM.
But many requests we have here are things for which there are no cabs, so maybe it is interesting not only to the cooks but also to the app developers (BS Tweak, Max Manilla, Touch X Icons etc...).

Agreed.
Would love to see an Ultra Lite ROM with everything that can be removed gone. In addition to this... cab files to put the removed stuff back if you wanted to.
What really annoys me with ROMs is when apps like google maps and Opera are cooked in.... These apps are always being updated so removing them from ROMs just makes sense!
Request
- Better touch screen accuracy.
- Better touch keyboard accuracy (like in iPhone)
- Close/Minimize buttons like in Windows 95/98/NT/XP/Vista/7
- Some kind of Windows 7 pined buttons at the bottom of screen, so you can always Maximize soft.
without copilot trial
auto power on/off on base of proximity sensor (or combination)
auto in call speaker on/off on base of proximity sensor (or other)
a lot more storage space, unbelievable now... 512mb rom standard, after initial setup there is only 178.11MB free to use???? So so soooooo wrong.... lol
working taskmanager @ top right corner, one which doesn't slow the device down!!!! showcase is no option, unresponsive and too big. One tap should be enough to display the running tasks..... (with the option to close them or switch to them)
fix the htc weather graphics of frost/snow (see attached pic for clarification ) --> only noticeable when you use hdwall for full screen wallpapers.
find a way to limit the number of sms to display when using threaded sms. It takes ages for the damn program to load the conversation. If for example it only loads like 20-30 sms, then there will be no problem i think. May b a button to show history (all?) --> may b better a suggestion to HTC, apparently they haven't tested with a large number of text messages. If they did...... SHAME ON YOU!
