Multi-Touch Browser on Ion - G1 General

Is there anyway i can replace my regular Browser with the Multi-Touch Browser on the Google Ion ROM?
I really dont want to flash a different ROM because i feel the Ion is the most stable and complete. No flaws

i think it needs a kernel that enables mutlitouch.. lol i thought this was a developers forum.. and i thought you would have a way to get multitouch on ion.. smh

Again I must ask, What is the big deal with multi-touch? If a mobile browser is worth it's weight then you shouldn't need to constantly zoom in and out. Is it simply an "Apple has it so it must be needed" thing?

No...
I could care less about Apple... Multi-Touch not only makes the zooming easier but also adds a wow factor to the phone. Makes apps more fun, texting on the VK faster, and more efficient... Multi-Touch is needed on a phone like the G1, all the browser needs is some more work, but the double tap works pro. I love it, but we need multi touch for ion... is there anyway i can download it as an .apk or something and add it to my phone

Multitouch makes you have to use two hands to use your phone.
Inefficient and slow.

The G1 is large and makes your pants heavier, so get a new free phone.
No.
MultiTouch is an additional feature, nothing more. If you can have an additional feature, why not? Its not like you can't normally zoom or anything, moreover it demonstrates the capabilities of this phone in the hands of the right users.
Okay, so here is a bit of a misconception. The multitouch is not in the browser, it is in a hacked kernel. Therefore, a Browser may support multitouch, but it doesn't mean you can use multitouch. Simply, the Browser is just a means to use the multitouch, while the multitouch itself is in the ROM. No Multitouch ROM means no Multitouch browser, even if your Browser does support it.

Yeah, because the graphics acceleration works great and the multitouch zoom looks great!
Do I have to say the "no" part, or do you get it?

I think the question is a matter of, why not? The phone is capable of it, granted it isn't as smooth, but it's not like it is going to cost you an arm or anything. You aren't compromising anything for this feature, so simply, why not?

Doubt it guys webOS supports Multitouch (I could be wrong about it being able to be ported but logic would have it that it can't). And our WinMo phones don't.
Well I guess losing out on a portion of the UI isn't too bad right? Chances are that it could be configured to work with different gestures along the lines of TouchFlo and Opera

I don't think you'll miss out on a portion of the UI. I know the gesture area at the bottom exists but there is no reason you'd cut it out due to multitouch support. We have plenty of gesture related apps on WinMo.
I think the problem resides in the fact that the entire OS supports multitouch so if it requires more than one touch to do certain things, you simply won't be able to do them. Which could hinder usability massively depending on how multitouch is implemented. Plus getting our screens to run webOS could be a massive issue, it's designed for a capacitive screen just like the iPhone OS. We have resistive screens. Unfortunately.

When i was referring to "a portion of the UI", the portion i was referring to was multitouch itself. I should have worded it differently. Thats a good point though. It would require a ton of customization and rewriting in order to work. Although android was also a challenge, and they've come pretty far with that also.

Multi touch, what do you do with it?

Now we all have the multi-touch function and I am wondering what everyone else think of it.
What exactly do you guys do with the function? I mean I can only imagine the use of it on two things.
1. Use it to pinch-zoom in browser.
2. Use it in game.
If I am not missing something, what's the use? People have been wanting it for so long and now, when I see it, it's like one of those things that you won't even miss it, when it's gone.
So, where do you use the multi-touch?
That browser pinch nonsense certainly doesn't offer any tangible benefits. What multitouch *does* offer though is a better soft-keyboard experience. With single touch, you need to press a button and release it before pressing down the next one. With multitouch, you can overlap key presses for a more natural typing experience. Of course, this requires a soft keyboard with multitouch awareness.
I must agree. I don't want it, or need it.
I mean I like it but we don't have any keyboard that support the function and 'NO' the original keyboard isn't multi-touch. It is only multi IF it works like the one in Iphone. I have my swype, so Im happy.
I have never wanted it, and don't see a need for it. Now that it is implemented in places people wanted it Apple is one down, however I don't see many using it
meh, i use it when browsing through the internet, so i guess i consider it a pretty nice feature, but thats about it. Its not really a negative feature (its not like it makes the phone unstable or anything) and to me, it's really more of a cosmetic feature rather than a practical one.
Oh, and another use for multitouch: Rub it in the faces of non-rooted G1 users

To me touchscreens just felt too gimmicky, that's one of the reasons I never got an jesusPhone when they first came out. After playing with one, though, I saw that it had merits, but never really warmed up to the multitouch thing. When I got my APD1, and after the cupcake update, I never really used the soft keyboard much. I used to think the physical one was just better, but when I played with a Hero (and Hero builds), it made a world of difference. I saw myself using the HTC soft keyboard a lot more.
I still find two finger operation kind of senseless, I like single-handed operation, and love the double-tap to zoom at the eclair browser, but for things that are best done with two hands (yeah, that too!), like typing, multitouch is a must.
I don't use it because the current hack of the browser with multitouch is unusable: it's slow and doesn't scale linearly but instead by steps.
If it is correctly implemented in 2.1 now, maybe I would use it in the future.

I agree. The 2.1 ROMs, and their multitouch in the browser make me not care about the feature completely. I have not had one ROM that multitouch has ran smoothly for me, unless we (they) haven't yet achieved that?
I have MT (Dwang's rom) but never use it. For the browser, I use Steel browser and prefer its long-press-and-hold zoom system. As others have said, it's mostly useful with soft keyboards.

the official nexus one multitouch looks pretty smooth to me in this video:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/02/nexus-one-gets-a-software-update-enables-multitouch/
Yes, if I could have my Dream behave like that, I would use multitouch
I like multitouch in Maps, it's so smooth! Would like the same smoothness in the browser.
I dont use multi-touch most of the time, but I one of those people that likes to have the option rather than it be removed, I mostly use it if I'm bored

I know Hero has it but never seen it used on any other rom or phone besides hero. But I can get multitouch hack for google maps.

i would only use multi touch for a better user experience on soft keyboards. dont really use it on the browser that much

the sony ericsson answer to multitouch. Nice!

i'm pretty sure this is gonna be implemented in the software upgrade for the X10.
fairly nice way to get around pinch to zoom i think
wont be missing pinch to zoom methinks
nice. i honestly couldn't give a ****e if multi was on x10 or not. If it did, that'd be great, but if not, meh. Don't understand the people that would pass on this phone just because it doesn't have multitouch.
yea me too, but zooming on the browser and google maps was getting a bit irritating for me. although downloading opera solves this issue with the "double tap" feature.
i just thought i should post this so those who lack of multi touch IS an issue might reconsider.
Oooh. That looks great! Hopefully that gallery will find it's way in to the standard X10 when 2.1 goes live!
Zooming is not a problem but multitouch will be required by games most likely.
This will affect gamers but for somebody else the missing MT it shouldn't be a problem.
Having gestures all over the phone will help a lot.
The only place that multitouch is really useful is the onscreen keyboard (especially for those who type fast, there'll be lest missed inputs)

its never been a problem for me even on a single touch resistive screen. also- i hate full qwerty keyboards on phones. they're too cramped and u need 2 hands most of the time. i use T9 pad (i downloaded the HTC_IME)
I use the HTC_IME as well and I have 0 missed keys Typed a long post earlier today.

Any confirmation that this is coming to the X10? The video shows the X10 Mini.

[QUESTION] Multitouch for all?

Hey,
I got a simple question some of you guys for sure answer very easy.
Is it possible to have multitouch in a application designed for singletouch?
Cheers
why not buy one here ^^ http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/de/p_htc_item.aspx?i=195872

eh? did I miss something?
lol he posted @ wrong topic i guess.
and ontopic: no you cant, its something with the architecture of an app
Not strictly true - it depends what you expect from multitouch in a singletouch app.
There's the system style zooming that can be switched on in most apps so you can pinch to zoom, but it zooms in on the screen rather than adding zooming into the application, so it can look a bit cheap and nasty. This functionality can be turned on on an app-by-app basis with registry entries, but BsB Tweaks offers you a much simpler method of doing it.
Other than that though, pettekneuz is correct. Apps have to be coded with multitouch in mind, or they simply won't do anything multitouch.

I don't mean pinch 2 zoom.
A simple example of what I am talking about:
multitouch in games like prince of persia run/jump/hit at the same time
multitouch in drum/piano/music apps
multitouch in flashgames
etc etc
Cheers
What are you actually looking for? Give us an example of an app and what you'd like to be to do with multi-touch.

HW Accelerated Web Browser ?

so with the new gingerbread roms does it enable the hw acceleration for the web ? as i see jumps from 2.2 to 2.2.1 for samsung vibrant was significant in terms of web browser speed.

i know opera browser has hw acceleration its super-extra smooth

Haha, true! Also when you use compression (Mini does, and I think it's optional in Mobile).
I wonder why more apps don't use hardware acceleration. Why have such a powerful GPU if it's essentially only going to be used for games?

Opera does use flash you can enabled it always on. Which I do on flash sites. The opera mini can't though haven't seen anything else. That has hardware acceleration blame Google for not implementing it yet.
Sent from my demonSPEED Glacier using XDA Premium App
Even with Flash turned off, android default web browser looks very slow and jerky (in terms of zooming and panning). And NO, web browser in gingerbread is not hardware accelerated.
I'm trying out Opera Mobile on my Legend, using CyanogenMod 7 (which is based on gingerbread), and its reeeaaaally fast (in terms of zooming and panning and even text re-flow) compared to the default browser! How i wish something like this can be implemented on the default browser. I've turned off Opera Turbo, so i think my connection doesn't pass through opera servers. Although there are some websites which opera doesn't render correctly (e.g. gmail.com)
How possible is it for someone to implement hardware acceleration on the UI of the default android browser, without google implementing it? does anyone know?
I'm really not a programmer, so if someone is able to do it, then MANY will be very very happy, i guess!
