does anyone know if the universal will take the new 8 gb sd cards that are coming out. cause i hear that the new 8 gb card will be a different format than the current 4 gig cards. im acheing to buy the 8 gig but dont know if it will accept it at all

I read around a little throw the internet and was pointed to some Universal reviews and they all tell thet 4GB is possible and 8GB as far as it is available. So I think the chance to get it running is at 80%

SD-HC is a new standard, not compatible with the SD 1.1 standard that maxes out at 2Gb. SD 1.1 is what the Universal uses. The 4Gb cards you are seeing use a 'loophole' in the specifications.
In other words: 4Gb is the maximum you will see for the Universal. And no, this cannot be remedied by a driver update, as the SD controller is embedded into the ARM processor (AFAIK).

I am perhaps hours from buying HTC Tytn..and from what I can see maximum size you can buy is 2 gig. Compared to my pocket pc (which had an sd and cf slot), I can put up to 4gig cards in its slot. I am going to really miss having a bigger capacity for extra programs, and memory for files. If they do come out with a larger Micro SD,, lets say eventually 4gig for example, do you think that all it would take to be able to adopt this new size would be to to a ROM upgrade (update) or is it written in stone that the max on this unit is 2 gigs.
Thx for any input, and especially any enlightenement in regards to larger micro sd's that are on the horizon.

AFAIK there is no 2Gig limit and 4 gig would be OK, but lets here from others.

SDHC cards don't work in normal SD slots, like the Hermes has one. There is hope for non SDHC 4GB MicroSD cards though, because there have been 4GB SD cards and now also 4GB Mini SD cards available, that are non SDHC compliant and work in standard Pocket PCs. So let's hope for non SDHC 4GB MicroSD that will work in our Hermes.

I'm planning to get a microSDhc card for my Jade (HTC Touch 3g).
Can you guys please advice will there is any difference in performance, response time and speed between 4GB microSDhc and 8GB microSDhc.
For the timebeing, I'm using mere 1GB micro SD card and its works great.
I know that both works with Jade, but how about the response time? I'm surely looking for bigger space, but not at the cost of speed and response time.

HTC (officially) supports only 4Gb SD. Many I know have used 8Gb without problem. Personally I'm using just 4Gb without problem. Response time - blink of an eye, I do not have an empirical engineering measure though. Most of my programs / applications are on SD and the response time are OK.. so far, over a year now, never fail.

Even i'm planning to have my most of the programs/appilcations on the storage card, so was wondering about the response time.
On HTC site, they said they have tested 8GB, but didn't mention about the performance.

Have you guys installed programs/applications on the Storage card?
And is the reponse of those program on SD are marginally slower as compare to similiar application on device memory?
Even I'm looking to bigger space, it helps a lazy person like me to clean the storage after long long time.
How is the access time for data like music/video/documents from SD and how about the stability?

I installed nearly all programs on my card (see above) and I have no delay or other problems with it. Of course I do never remove it.

most of the new Cards u can use have different "class" of speed, it give class
Class 2: 2 MByte/s - 13x
Class 4: 4 MByte/s - 26x
Class 6: 6 MByte/s - 40x
i use a Toshiba 8GB with Class4 (i pay 8,-EUR at eBay) and this works fine.
The most of the Programms I use, I installed on the Card except Phoneweaver or eqal Software that use direct access to the Sim.
I use for Videos (MusicClips, TV-Series with Subtitle in srt-format and Documentations) the CoreMobileVideoPlayer and the Videos works fluently perfect.
I have a second Device, a HTC Diamond with internal 4GB and to this it is no different with the speed (memory access).

well i use an 8GB micro sd card and it works like a charm
besides i heard that our jade can hold up to 16 GB's (thats what the folks at htc store told me) not quite sure about it but i guess the more storage u ride the more battery consumption u get
so i guess its fairly enough to stick with 8Gigs.

Hi guys. (I own htc touch 3g- jada 110) I am using also 8gb SDHC (kingston) class 4 and I recomend this one. Its fast, cheap (ebay- just be aware of some cheap replicas). I have also tried this card on my girlfriend`s htc tytn 2 (kaiser) and worked as well. So highly recomend KINGSTON cards.
I have both the 4gb and 8 gb Sandisk micro sd card. I can't tell the difference in speed and am very happy with the 8 gb card! Am thinking of upgrading to the 16 gb for my movies though!

I'm sorry to report that I've returned the Kingston Class 4 32Gb microSD card for its failure to perform.
Performance writing to this Kingston card (from a desktop PC, card in either the N1, or the PC's card reader) was ~820KB/Sec
Writing the same data files to a Sandisk Class 2 16Gb card I achieved > 1.5MB/sec - i.e. approx twice as fast.
(PC is Acer Quad core 2.6Ghz jobbie with 8Gb RAM running Windows 7)
I found it really hard to get 4MB/sec out of the Kingston card - and only achieved it with 1 of the test options on CrystalMark. (write 1Gb sequential files)
When I tried this test with the 16Gb Sandisk class 2 card I got 10MB/sec. Clearly the SanDisk isn't a class 10 card - so I'm guessing the Crystal benchmark test isn't completely appropriate for SD card writers!.
I supplied Kingston with the packaging details / photos etc and they confirmed that it IS a real Kingston class 4 card. They agreed that performance should be better. LamndaTek clearly agreed too - after they received my return and tested it they gave me a full refund. (32Gb £83.66 (Inc VAT)). (Many thanks guys)
I guess the card was faulty.. but I might just be placing my trust in Sandisk now, as I've never had any problems with their cards.

Also, if you're writing hundreds of small files vs one large file it makes a difference.
I think it was just a defective card.
Even the POS 32Gb cards floating around out there write at faster than 800kb/sec mb/sec.

I will never buy any sandisk flash,sd card, micro again.. they have the worst CS i have ever delt with.. THey stand on their High Horse thinking their **** dont stink just because they said they only have a 1% defective rate.. which is crap if you ask me.. i went through some many defective flash drives used as keeping files on them and music to play in my scion xb.. So pretty much they told me i was mis using the device.. so i told them i would never buy from them..
so Kingston all the way now. they have the best CS i have ever delt with.. good day!

I tested it with both options - the supplied adaptor - and also in the Nexus 1 - couldn't get it faster that I quoted, in any combination. Even tried a reformat - still no good.

It was a mixture of file sizes for the main copy, i.e. the contents of the 16Gb drive over to the 32Gb drive. About 14Gb were music files which come in at about 4Mb each.
As the other guys said above Kingston customer services were very responsive once they identified the card as genuine.. but LambdaTek were even more so.
I've still never had a Sandisk product give me an error though (I have 3 cards from them)

I've used SanDisk for years without issue. Also been extremely happy with Lexar. Kingston, on the other hand, has been a complete letdown to me! A couple years ago, I bought a 4gb class 6 Kingston card for my digital camera. I didn't run any controlled benchmarks, but real-world use showed only about 2-3mb/sec transfer rates, which I thought was kind of slow. Also, as I was using a card reader instead of just plugging my camera in every time I needed to move pictures, the card was constantly being moved between devices. This proved fatal to the card, as the cheap plastic began to come apart. Never ever have I seen that happen to *any* SD card, even the cheap no-name ones! It started with the little tabs between each of the contacts, but didn't take long before the top and bottom of the card had begun to split. After a few months, the Kingston card was no good - all because of a disappointing casing. I wasn't rough with the card - I didn't treat this card any differently than others. In fact, I still have a 64mb SanDisk card from several years ago that's still going strong (great for sharing some jpgs, docs, etc.) So it might be worthwhile staying away from Kingston altogether...

so what is the deal with the N1 and its SD card speed?
i have a Transcend 8gb Class 6 card, i bought it for my G1 and recently got a N1.
on my G1 i would get an as expected 6 mb/sec or better copying files to/from it. in the N1 its never much more than 2mb/sec at most. this is apparently just when copying files via usb though
i just ran the app j bench mark 1.0.
when set to 10mb (2kb buffer) the default and lowest test setting i get
1.5mb sec write 2.5mb sec read
when set to 100mb (8km buffer) i get
6.16 mb/sec write
10.34 mb/sec read
so clearly internally the phone can and does handle the card at full speed but connected to PC's it does not.
and before anyone says it yeah i know just use a card reader to transfer large files.. whatever shouldn't need to do that imho
(megabytes not bits i am quoting here, i know the difference)

Had the same problem... RMA'd it with newegg and the replacement comes in tomorrow... I hold out hope.
Sandisk more me, no problem so far
My replacement Kingston class 4 holds out class 2 speeds on write of large files, less than that on write of small files. Blazingly slow on write, but faster on read than my class 6 8gb sandisk...
All in all... I can live with it for now...

So I'm wondering if there is a micro SD card slot then do you really need to buy the 32gb version? It appears that the current math among tablet manufacturer's is $100 for 16gb of memory which is obviously a joke. So if i buy the 16gb version and then buy a 16gb sd card ($25) do I effectively come out with the same thing for $75 cheaper?
Depends how you use it. I think it will behave like the Samsung Galaxy S in that the built in memory will appear as a different location to the external memory. Files cannot span both locations and thus your file may not fit even though the total combined free space you have left is larger than the file you are trying to copy.
well if thats the case then in general it will work just fine. Chances arent very good that i'm going to have some massive file on there.
Internal memory is probably faster than 25$ microSD card.
You could spend $90 on a Class 10 32GB card and be looking pretty good.
there you go, 32 gb for the price they are offering 16gigs. sounds good to me. not only that but you can spread that cost. Drop the $499 now, wait a couple months and get the micro sd later. thanks for the info

On my galaxy s, my class 4 micro sd card is as quick is the internal memory. I'm sure the tab will allow quicker speeds but it's worth noting that a class 4 card is sufficiently fast enough to play back 1080p without problems. If you want to save time transferring files between tablet and pc then fair enough but I would personally save money and get a class 4 and make a cup of tea while it copies

I think the conflicting reports are due to two different versions of the Tab 10.1. The version shown during the MWC does not appear to have a MicroSD card slot. The newer version shown at CTIA does have a MicroSD card slot. Most reviews are consistent with this but a few have gotten it wrong which has probably led to the confusion.
There's a number of differences between the versions but the easy to identify differences are thickness and MP of the rear camera. The first version (MWC) is 10.9mm thick and has an 8MP rear camera. The newer version (CTIA) is 8.6mm thick and has a 3MP rear camera.

Yeah i figure thats about what happened. Hopefully we will see some detailed(confirmed) specs soon so we can know what is really driving this thing. Also, perhaps finally review the optional UI question.

true, you probably can live without an SD card. But the reason most people will probably get a 16gb plus a 32gb SD is because its cheaper (even with the extra 32gb SD card purchase) then paying an extra $100 for a mere 16GB

I wouldn't have thought removing a MicroSD card slot would save much space or weight. A MicroSD card is tiny as too the housing for the slot.
For me, the want of a MicroSD card slot is not for expanding storage space cheaply but more for being able to transfer files to/from MicroSD easily. There's many situations when I would want to do this with a MicroSD card from my other devices or it is a MicroSD card from someone else I am with. In those situations, it's sometimes easier than faffing around with cables, bluetooth or Wifi. So the slot just gives another option.
That's true. Having microSD is handy. Especially if you want to transfer a lot of files or big files.
But, my point is that no-microSD will not stop me buying a tablet
After I owned Nexus S, I don't think it is important anymore as long as the internal storage is big enough.
Again, this is my own preference

The one released in Aust. last week is a 16GB no SD slot model. I haven't seen a confirmation of the one that has the SD slot but have heard rumours that it will be thinner and up to 32GB.
I thought the internal memory was available to both system & data doesn't this mean that the internal memory would be an ext flavour rather than a FAT?
I see your point and I have to agree that it does seem a bit cheaper just to get the 16gb model and buy a 16gb sd card unless u plan on being a data/movie packrat on ur Tab in which case you will want to get the 32gb model as well as a 32gb sd card.
I want the highest storage available period!
I don't care if it cost more. I would rather get a 32 GB and have another 32 GB of SD card storage.
I wish that there is a 64 GB version with SD card slot so that I can have 32 GB SD card to make the total of 96 GB.
I can never have enough space because I have so many HD movies that I want to store in my tablet.
