[Idea] eyes-free dialling - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

This sounds like a very useful dialer ..
http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/03/eyes-free-shell-for-android-actually-delivers-on-its-name/
i.e. touch any part of screen and it will be 'five' then your gestures will decide which number to pick. With every number you 'go over' you get a feedback (vibrate/key click).
Would be awesome if someone can port it over to windows mobile.

It would be sweet to have this for WinMo.
However, if it will be a paid app I'll skip it though.

Thats brilliant if u ever find one for the HTC Wizard do post

I dunno about the vibrations and whatnot to dial. It would be like morse code lol... but a full sized canvas for you to draw numbers wouldnt be all bad. it could even use gestures and still not require you to physically look at the phone when you dial. A

brilliant idea

what for is this solution?
If someone is blaind then I uterstand but in other case i can't find enything briliant in that thing. Sometging new but useless for me ....

msvc or cyberon anyone?

Nah its just useful if you are preoccupied doing something and you'd rather not look at the phone when you're dialing.. for example.. say you're watching a movie and its getting good.. but then your girlfriend asks you to call her friend and ask her what time your gonna meet her somewhere and blah blah.. So to put it simply, it just makes life easier.

Honestly how many people these days remember numbers? Most people just stick a number in their contacts. The only numbers I could tell you off the top of my head are my own and my wife's.

ever tried to use the time when driving for 'useful' purpose like navigating complex phone tree ('press 3 for billing followed by your account number') ?

hi all,
any s/w available for having video ringtones on wm5 ?
why would you want video ringtones?
Something eye catching for deaf people?
it looks cool...so is nethin 4 tht available ?
time to keep this post on the top of the thread. someone please code this up before apple takes credit for one more thing.

it would be nice to see it in a program like S2U.

If I could work out how to capture calls, I'd give it a shot... But, I haven't worked it out yet!
I hate Apples marketing lies too!
VERY DOPE IDEA.....someone please hop on this
ya for real i will donate or pay. we need something way cool to shut the iphone people up. video ringtones
maybe itll be easier to start with animated flash or gif instead of full vdeio clips? very interesting idea indeed!
If you could capture the incoming call
the all that woyld be needed is like tcpmp to play full screen video
or even wmp instead of audio ringtone
With 2 buttons Ignore and answer
And of course the caller ID info displaying
I havet written code in 10 yrs and I was never that good
i wish i was though
This is a great idea
But sprint phones had Video Ringtones like 5 years ago
On the sanyo mm500
So APPLE didnt revolutionize sh**
But WinMo can make it BETTER!!!
Apple are not revolutionary, and this is done by a seperate company anyway...
I'll package up a very basic call capturer as a test to see if it works in theory... Then I'll try and embed some form of media player...
could we maybe modify photo app by removing limitations (picture format),so it can play gif's as someone mentioned....or maybe a plug-in will be enough....it'll just take to make a plug-in
I was just wondering yesterday why WM phones can't do this. Seeing that a lot of non-smartphones can do it. I don't really mind since it's kind of pointless. I have S2U2 showing who's calling me, which is actually useful.
I think this is a cool idea, not sure that I would use it, but nevertheless..nice idea
Here's a quick test app to see if it's possible to intercept the calls...

Edit: I put it on my device but I'm not sure what to do with it. When I click on the icon it gives me some screen about the caller name, the caller number & the caller contact... with the only options to accept or reject. Any suggestions or just a description l3v5y?

Doesn't look all that different now does it?
Ehm? Flat upper-bar?
Whatta hell? Year 2002 called, it wants his single-color bars back.
Seems like Microsoft gave up on trying to make "professional" looks match the iPhone. Which is not good.
Edited addon: Ah, the greyish scroll bars are still there to add clutter to the today-screen and meet the user with oodles of usability.
Deepfish included... Interesting.

From the pictures it looks like Internet Calling is now supported on the ROM, so maybe there will be new rtcdll files that will fix the speaker.
Wow, people are complaining about not having gradient bars... Hmm, should you really be using a PDA phone then? Personally I don't like gradient bars. I'd rather have my text more readable on a distinctly opposite colored background. But I'm more for function. Hopefully Deepfish will be on it and it better be good because that's the race that M$ needs to catch up on. Web browsing. Not what color the bars are.
Photon is rumored to be the "real change". We'll see...
Well if the next version goes the same way as Vista did then I feel I will be looking at an Iphone. Just think of all the pop ups you can "ok" when a new call comes in.
Ring Ring ---> pop up
A new call has been dected do you want to answer ?
The New caller can not be found in your adddress book, do you still want to answer it?
The caller is on hold do you still want to answer it anyaway.
The caller has been rejected as his phone has not been signed or does not have a Windows operating system.

He's right. MS needs to stop slacking and put out something they called "revolutionary" sooner than later. This 6.1 looks terrible.
Don't know what people were expecting. Why would a point update include real big changes?
I'm not sure that is an actual release for Windows Mobile PPC, but I know what it looks like for the Standard: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2007/12/07/windows-mobile-61-video-walkthrough/

Things i hate

Like i said before, my previous phone (magician) was a perfect little phone.
I just bought a jade, and there are a few thing i wanted to ask you guys regarding this new phone and OS.
For instance, when smsing, some contacts have more than 2 numbers. How can i choose one of those numbers? Only the 1st one shows up. I have to go to contacts and choose the number i want to use? its just stupid and time wasting....
Also, my girlfriends contact name is separated by a SPACE. For example A NAME. The phone doesnt recognize this contact at all. when i press A, it shows all the contacts with A, except hers. If i press space, it inputs the contact above. its just annoying...
Another thing, when i start a conversation, the screen goes out. Unlike the iphone, with its motion sensor, for the screen to go back on i need to press the on/off button. It doesnt make any sense!
It my fist time with this OS. Maybe its just me, but i'm not that pleased with how it works.
If anyone cares to explain, i'd be more than happy.
Thanks.
100 people read this and no one corrected me.
I guess its actually an equipment issue rather than owner misuse.

Solution is simple.. break up and find a girlfriend that her contact name is NOT separated by a SPACE.
Easy and convenient.
DUDE!!!!! why didn't i think of that before?!
Thanks for the useful input.
Keep'em coming!
Another thing I hate (i'm a lover, not a hater, but this phone is really getting on my nerves )
The battery. Soon after an alert about the battery level, the battery doesnt last a call.

Oh, ok! Now i got it.

I hate the HD too!!! (Never thought I'd say that)

I miss my Trinity.
Been using HTC since they weren't branding themselves. My first phone was the Space Needle (ATT Pocket PC). I loved it. Did so much with it. Later flashed it, was very nice.
Then I moved on to the I-Mate Jam. Smaller, sleeker, also fun.
Then I got the Trinity P3600. This is absolutely the best phone there is in my opinion. It's small, light, has GPS, a decent camera, video call, mini SD slot.
I got more from my P3600 and a 2gb card than the HD has given me.
Yes, the HD has more memory, huge screen, better camera (although annoying, and who REALLY uses the camera on their phone for 'real' pictures), ..... wait, what more? For me, nothing.
I miss my d-pad. Try using the HD to go to Call History and view the contact details of the third caller down. You can't! No Way to move down. If you touch the contact, it calls him!!
Try finding a contact with the last name that begins with 'M' when you have 100+ contacts who begin with 'M' and the one you want is in the middle of the list. Oh, "just start typing part of the name" you might say. I DON'T WANT TO!! I'm using one hand. The only way is 'flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking'.
You've heard of "tennis elbow", now there's "flick thumb". What a pain!
And the soft touch buttons. USELESS!!!! First of all, forget the third one, the 'back arrow'. Does anyone use it? I don't. USELESS.
Now, try answering a call while the HD it in it's protective sleeve. While you're trying to slide the damn thing out, you almost inevidibly "answer" or "ignore" by accidentally pressing one of the soft buttons!! USELESS!
Now try putting the HD in your pocket or in the center console in your car. You will soon start hearing.....blip-blip-blip-blip-blip....... That's the soft keys being pressed accidentally.......Now look at the phone, it's frozen with just a start button.
..and and and......
I can go on, but this phone is hard to handle, very "touchy" and just a general PAIN IN THE A$$ to use, not to mention expensive as H3LL!!!
Glad I never sold my P3600. Will be going back to my old tried and true friend today. I flashed my Trinity to WM6.1, and it's GREAT!!!
Hope I can find a sucker to buy the HD before everyone starts realizing it sucks.
Thanks for listening!
-JoJo
haha, u made me laugh
well, firstly, were u blind when u were buying HD? I always check how device looks first, and you? Didn't u see it doesn't has a Dpad?
secondly, all your other problems are that you don't know what's a LOCK DEVICE function is...
in a conclusion, learn how to lock the device first, then you can talk about it
I miss my Trinity.
You still have it, so how can you miss it??
I miss my d-pad. Try using the HD to go to Call History and view the contact details of the third caller down. You can't! No Way to move down. If you touch the contact, it calls him!!
Working fine here.....
Try finding a contact with the last name that begins with 'M' when you have 100+ contacts who begin with 'M' and the one you want is in the middle of the list. Oh, "just start typing part of the name" you might say. I DON'T WANT TO!! I'm using one hand. The only way is 'flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking' 'flicking''flicking''flicking''flicking'.
You've heard of "tennis elbow", now there's "flick thumb". What a pain!
Don´t quite understand the problem.....
And the soft touch buttons. USELESS!!!! First of all, forget the third one, the 'back arrow'. Does anyone use it? I don't. USELESS.
Use AEButton Plus and assign any functions you like....
Now, try answering a call while the HD it in it's protective sleeve. While you're trying to slide the damn thing out, you almost inevidibly "answer" or "ignore" by accidentally pressing one of the soft buttons!! USELESS!
Agreed.....that´s why I never used the pouch...
Now try putting the HD in your pocket or in the center console in your car. You will soon start hearing.....blip-blip-blip-blip-blip....... That's the soft keys being pressed accidentally.......Now look at the phone, it's frozen with just a start button.
Can´t duplicate....
The Bug is not the device but rather the User...in this case
I was very concerned when I saw this thread as I will finally get my HD tomorrow. All the complaints made seem to be a user problem, I was able to do everything he couldn't do on my Diamond just using the screen, so I assume that that would be exactly the same as the HD.
I think everyone on these forums understands that most WM phones aren't the best out of the box but with tweaking the phones are made into great devices that are really interesting and are never boring because you can change so much.
If you want a device that just works with minimal functions so you don't get upset or have brain overload, the iphone is a great peace of hardware but WM has so much more to offer if you are willing to tweak and play around abit.
I think instead of posting "I hate the HD", it would be more appropriate to post.... "I need some help with some functions" and with the wealth of knowledge here you will get some answers very quick and not give people like me heart attacks reading your misleading posts.

-> Flick
-> Basically, i never used the contacts list . Always use the dial key, bring up the keypad, and use smart dialing - much much faster. and yes, its 1 hand operation. You probably not aware of this obvious function? E.g. if you want to call John, type in your keypad 5606 . In the contacts list, There's a alphabet along the screen... touch letter M and it brings u to the M part of your contacts list... i dont think any of us have less than 100 contacts in our phone .
All these are purely your problem for not learning how to use it. not the phone's problem.
The Touch HD surely has flaws, like any other phone, but all of your problems can be avoid by learning how to use it.
Hey, for 100 usd I will be the sucker who buys it..
I could go line by line and combat everything this member says is "wrong" with the HD but I wont. All i can say is i am just not hving the problems he describes None of them with maybe the exception of I simply just dont use the camera. I use my real camera for pic taking

Not once you had a good point. Not once! You should have found one by accident.
The one thing I miss is the roller-wheel of my hermes. But it sounds like I could remap the volume rocker to do something similar, anyone tried this?
I've never used a full touch screen phone before, so like a cautious person I went in to the Orange shop and asked for a demo, which they were happy to give, and realised it wasn't all that daunting. A number of the annoyances with it so far are thanks to the not-so-touch-friendly Winmo 6.1, when someone cracks Android for this thing (apparently the Touch HD will be the new T-Mobile G2 according to the rumour mill) I'll be more than happy to try it out, plus the modding community will fix it up with their godlike skills, I'm just glad I found these forums!
Objective view, please...
I think most people here did not get the points raised here or have not been objective in their response (it is obvious they are product of their ne gadget); the phone as Windows Mobile is not per se user-friendly. The interface incorporated by HTC is not perfect. The hardware is therefore inadequate since it cannot be complemented by a good piece of software .
HTC has effectively delivered this phone in the same manner as it has done with other previouus devices (albeit a modified soft keyboard) with keypad. Even the TF3D for a WVGA screen, there is not difference to VGA devices, only larger icon and the Stock tab!
Excessive tweaking of the device is not always a good solution as it impacts other areas of the device.
Therefore stating all this is down to user is a best an over statement.
With all this feedback I wonder how HTC development team will feel! I for one do not complaint for the issues raised but admit they are serious problem. I can recall not being able to open the battery cover and having to refer to the manual, still it will not open. Only after several attempts the process became easier.
The iPhone is not always a valid alterative either, since many people wish to have applications that are not designed for this platform, such as any device car navigation program. This is particularly true in this case, as the poster clearly stated his background!
Personally, I must say my main decision for purchasing the BlackStone was merely for the screen size, having used the Universal for over year and then going down to Polaris (screen size wise), and with no sign of the Omni, I was “forced” again to a half solution. Any other aspect of the device was secondary in importance…
Ha, ha, ha...
Ha, ha, ha... thanx for the laugh, angry man
All new gadgets takes some getting use to... The HD i no exeption, especially when you cant use the software your used to because of the screen.

I've been quite concerned about HD since I ordered it, and then once I got it (overpriced on HTC distribution orders to retail stores), etc. And finally with many "small" issues I wrote in other threads.
So I fully understand the feelings of angry users.
Has anybody noticed we, (concernerd users) are greatly defined by our previous machine?
It has come to my attention through this and other forums, that ex-TRINITY users are prone to be "in love" with it and not very pleased with HD.
I think this is really somthing to be investigated.
Finally, toying around in a phone store with the machine (if you have had the chance) is not enough to put all the blame in the "unconscious" buyer, it's simply not fair in todays e-shopping.
HTC did a very poor job putting the HD in the market for Christmas time, hope it will get fixed over the time, but i'm still very upset with HTC way of launching new devices.
I won't address all the issues, because other people already have, and because it really just sounds like the problem is more with what YOU like and don't like - and not with the phone. Either you are used to a certain way and you don't really want to change or you are not aware of how you can do things differently to better use the phone. In any case, I do respect your opinion and you have every right to express those thoughts here. Okay, so here are a couple of thoughts from my side.

The camera is descent - not excellent - but descent. The lack of flash is a known downfall. However, keep in mind that no phone out there will replace the quality of an actual camera. The camera feature on the phone is an extra commodity for those moments when you don't want to take a real camera with you or for those good times, when you are hanging out with friends and you don't need to shoot the greatest quality pictures. No camera phone is meant to be used as your main camera for vacation shots etc.

Maybe you don't understand how this feature works. On my HD, if I tap once on a number in the call history list, it DOES NOT call right away, but instead it brings up the call history for that caller alone. Then:
If the caller is in my contacts list, I see the name at the top and possibly a picture (if I added one). Below this, it shows me the call history.
If I tap on the name/picture, it pulls up a list of numbers and email addresses for that contact. If I once again tap on the name/picture, it brings me to that listing so I can edit the contact's information. I can always cancel by pressing menu at the bottom.
If I tap on a given missed call itself, it will call that number. The nice thing is that if that person called me once from their home and another time from their mobile, I can see that here and I can choose which number to call back.
If the caller is NOT in my contacts list, then I simply see "unknown" at the top and then the number that called below that (provided that person does not have their number blocked from callerID). If I tap on the number, it will call that person. If I tap on "unknown", I will eventually end up on my contacts list, where I can assign that number to a contact or I can create a new contact with that number.
I do have to admit, that it has happened a few times, that a contact calls me and in the call history list, I only see the number as if it were an unknown person. In that case, I have assigned that number to the contact and it overrides the number I already had. I don't know why that is. Maybe because some numbers I have entered as 0177-555-5555 and others as +491775555555 (in Germany).
Anyone know if that makes a difference? It seems that sometimes it does and other times it doesn't.

Huh?? Flicking is A LOT faster than pressing a D-pad arrow 80 times to get to your contact. You could also press the M or N on the alphabest list on the right. That way, you'll either see the beginning of the M's or the end of the M's and you can flick from there. Seriously - flicking goes really fast. And typing the first two letters into the name box is NOT that bad. You see, the possibilities here are endless!
Now try putting the HD in your pocket or in the center console in your car. You will soon start hearing.....blip-blip-blip-blip-blip....... That's the soft keys being pressed accidentally.......Now look at the phone, it's frozen with just a start button.

A simple press of the power button locks your phone - and guess what..... no more blip-blip-blip-blip-blip.
Now simply press the power button again and you can blip-blip-blip all you want.
So, there now - you must certainly LOVE your HD now, right?

[IDEA] Control your phone by sending Vibration!!!

I was very intrigued by the development of 'Seismo' application...which can detect vibration.
This is just an IDEA for a fun application.....and maybe...just maybe useful....
I'm sure u can isolate and identify the harder vibrations. With that said, lets say i left my diamond somewhere on my table...and
1) i TAP on the table twice....and my Diamond makes a noise in response...letting me know its location.
Or maybe i have it in my pocket...
2)Tap once while the music is playing to change the track....or to silent a call...or to ignore it...
and i'm sure this could be used for alot of other things.....let me know what u guys think..
Its a simple suggestions...if this is worth any of ur time....i would love to see an application like this.
Peace...
nice idea!
hope someone will create this!
That's a nice idea There could be a problem with detecting the taps, but I'm really looking forward to such an app.
Real Reason??

I am ready to develop the app. I have already downloaded the code for siesmo and changing it. But I am still trying to think of a really useful reason this app will accomplish.
So if people here can contribute and come up with some real reason.. it would be nice...
i mean I will still work on this irrespective ... and then may be share some code ...
ciao...
Maybe switching the screen on/off? I mean it would be good to get fast some info on missed calls/unread sms by taping the table
- answer a incoming call (and automatical switch the speakerphone on?!)
- next/prev track in s2p/music-tab/wmp
- chance profile (vibrate/mute/..)
- dismiss reminders/sms/calls and stuff
- find the phone on the desk
But probably this app should work only if Diamond is lying on a table - Gsensor in horizontal position I don't want my phone to do strange things when I walk with it in my pocket

true!
That could also be preventable (most of the time) by instead of using one tap (fairly common occurance by chance) to three/or more taps.
The best use would really be to mute (music/mic/ring), while in pocket. That would really be useful. Just tap...tap...tap... and its mute.
Won't this kill your batteries? I mean you would have to poll the g sensor all the time in the background for it to work.
Also there is already G Trigger which could be configured to do something similar.

I agree +1
Honestly i am still trying to find a good reason for this idea....
I am sure that if the code was written and could be made to do stuff with say a mort script, that people would find all kinds of unimaginable things that they could do with it!
I'm loving the feedbacks....
...like the issue with the battery.....very true..
but Seismo App .. was a battery drainer...but it was fun..
.We'll make it only poll if you run the application....it can still be useful...
say for instance ur studying and you were listening to songs on ur phone hooked up to the speakers...and you want to quickly change tracks...or ignore the call so u can keep listening....
or you studying and you wanna make notes of what ur reading...u tap once/twice..it starts recording..."note to self....blah blah blah " Tap again to end...
or Tap twice to run Microsoft Voice Command...
If it's not going to take too much effort..i really think its worth a try....i wish i could develop...i know i can do graphics...so i'll be helpful in that field...

You know a new game from the wii - they had an idea with the tabs : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fYiYzrSuyFs
Perhaps something like that - we hav the controler and the monitor in one device
So many uses!
Just imagine, one tap for pause, 2 for next song, 3 for prev. song.
Double tap the table and it lights up and shows notifications.
Would be wicked!
Or...
If you've got your phone in your pocket while playing music, and you want next song you tap one time against your pocket (with the phone in it).
Your phone recognizes it and plays the next song. If you tap twice, it plays the previous song. Of course you can make more combinations!
The reason why this could be very handy, is because it's very annoying to pull your phone out of your pocket if you want it to play another song.
A bit the same idea but then in your pocket...
damn right.....especially when the phone has silicone casing...
even when i get a call..and its in my pocket..it'll take me soo long sometimes i miss a call...no joke.. if i can answer it just by tapping on it...that'll be nice...so i can tell them to hold on for 5 minz. then struggle to take out the phone in my pocket.
Here's a video of samsung s8000 Jet...it can regonize taps on the phone.........maybe they're using the same method we're trying to achieve
