worth getting the touch? - Touch GSM General

Hi all,
I gave my mrs my old 02 Orbit the other day so she could use the tomtom on it (it was such a great phone I couldn't bring my self to sell it so it's been sitting in it's box for 2 years). She's now falen in love with WM and loves all the apps that you can get for it (brain training etc etc).
but, being an old phone it's low on memory etc, and she wants a pink one (I know...but she's a girl, what can I do)
so, we had a look around yesterday and didn't really find anything she liked, so she was thinking that maybe an omnia would work. Thing is, the omina is fairly big and has a non standard screen size.
So, I'm thinking that maybe the touch would be a good phone for her (I can customise it with a pink skin).
what are peoples thoughts of it?
I've got a touch HD but that's just a bit too big for her, and she isn't a fan of the diamond.

i am big fan of sony ericsson phone..reason i culd customize each and everythn accor to my needs..unfortunately due to work i had to purchase a WM..elfin was my first WM..first i thought i missed the customization like in SE..but after i came here and heard of all the custo i am amazed..elfin can handle anythn and evrythn..i wuld say to close ur eyes and go for this.

ok..is there an easy way of differentiating the array of versions? some have 64 MB some have 128, some have GPS, some appear to not have this etc etc
should I be looking for a model number? or is it as simple as one is a Touch, and the other is a Touch 3G?

the flavors in touch are,
Touch P3450 - Called as Elf 64/128 RAM/ROM size
Touch P3452 - Called as Elfin 128/256 RAM/ROM size
Touch 3G - Dunno the model number and technical term..but this version of Touch as 3G as per the name itself, dunno the size of RAM/ROM.
P3452 is the enhanced version of P3450 in regards to RAM/ROM.
AFAIK, the above specs are true..if some1 find it false, please advice the thread starter.

there is also touch viva which is similar to touch elf htc p3450, with newer rom and looks more modern. Inside the same, outside not similar nad what is the most important - touch viva is more expensive.
Edit
If not htc, try to find asus p552w. It's small and powerful.

Touch V.s. 6800?

I just recently purchased a 6800 and am not sure if I want to stick with it... What does everyone know about the Touch and 6800? Pro's / Con's? I understand the Touch doesn't have a keyboard, but my 6800 doesn't have much ram and freezes up a bit... Not quite sure what to do... If someone knows of a reg hack to be able to use the sd card for more ram or another way, please let me know as this is really the only downside I see to the 6800.
The clincher for me is Touch has no Wifi, but that may not matter to you if you have an unlimited data plan.
for me the physical keyboard is still a much needed option. tapping with the stylus or finger is quite annoying for many activities and can be slow for emails or heavy texting.
the only thing that worried me about 6800 is memory and so far i am doing just fine
i have many apps running at once and still enough memory free.
the lack of keyboard and wifi killed the touch for me as an option

Totally agree! Physical keyboard is not an option, it is a must.
I have to agree w/ everyone else. I have the 6800, and no data plan. I have no desire to use the data plan as I have wifi access 95% of my day, the other 5% i'm driving. so a phone w/o wifi is a no-go for me. Also the keyboard. I need to feel the keys when typing. I'm just getting used to using the touch screen 4 the dialer. I wouldn't want to use the touch screen for typing emails, and txts.
Touch... Reluctantly
With Aliant [Bell in Nova Scotia, Canada] The data plan costs $25 per month for 4mb on the 6800 and $7 for unlimited on the Touch because in their words - the Touch doesn't have e keyboard and so is not a data phone. Nice. I just switched to the touch for that reason.
Recently I was in the sprint store holding my titan next to the touch and comparing the two....
The screen is the exact same size....
I started talking with another lady waiting to be called on, and it looks like the touch is simply the Titan cut in half...
Both have touch screens, the exact same size....
Take away most of the buttons, and take away the keyboard...
and you have a touch...
One advantage... slightly slimmer (because you have NO KEYBOARD)
lol... I can't see this as an upgrade... especially considering there are instructions on this site to flash a rom with the touch skins, making it easier to use your fingers on the screen.
IF the screen isn't bigger, I can only say they have stripped away buttons and made the device harder to operate.....
Is there any actual "benefit" to having a touch over the titan???
I liked it at first... until I compared the screen size with my phone and found the touch skins....
Really, the only benefit I see is a slimmer and (appears to be) slightly more durable enclosure.....
If anyone knows of any real 'upgrade' in getting the new touch... please tell me, because I was starting to confuse myself at how I liked it, yet 5 minutes later saw it as a stripped titan.
as i szee it...
the touch has 2 things the titan does not have.
titan has 64mb ram compared to 128mb ram in the touch
touch has hardware based touchflo screen
the touchflo screen is a nice thing you can do without but i do wish my titan had 128mb of memory
whats the difference between the screen on my titan and a 'touchflo' screen
agreed... twice the ram is good...
but i have buttons and a keyboard
maybe a few too many buttons, but the scroll wheel/button combo is nice for one handed operations, sometimes its not as easy as you'd think to hohld the phone and use your thumb on the screen or middle of the phone to scroll.
I'm sure its been asked, but anyone know if its possible to upgrade the titan ram? Even by opening the phone case....?
I'm sure it would be soldered on and non-removable anyways...
I saw another post asking about using storage on the sd card for memory, but no one had an answer.
in the store the screens looked like the exact same part re-used in the newer touch or vogue... whatever it is sprint has now
oh how I forgot about the Jog wheel! Yes, I would definitely miss this on the Touch.
The TouchFlo screen I believe has another sensor which was talked about here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-326853.html
I tried to Software based touchFlo apps, and ultimately I felt the Titan worked better with out them.
Now if only we could increase the RAM we would be set..
So for me it came down to WiFi and Vzw didn't have the touch when I got my titan
So about the screen: The touch's is flush which is nice though not a big deal. TouchFlo is software. Much needed software IMO. The main thing is finger scrolling w/o the side bar. There's also things like the large start menu and the large title bar. It makes the Windows Mobile UI a whole lot easier to use. It's also got a different touch keyboard which is nice.
Now that's good, but with some searching of the forum you can find all the cabs for those. Though some are a bit buggy or TouchFlo is no longer free.
Now the XV6800 has the keyboard: that's personal. It's also got a bigger battery. If it matters the 6800 has a camera flash/light which may or may not be something to consider. It's nice to have sometimes and with codyppc's work you can use both cameras (the touch one produces better quality.)
So WiFi and keyboard and bigger battery or smaller size, more RAM, and better interface.
The touch is usually cheaper.
HTH.
I just got a Touch today to play around with.
My first impression is I LOVE how it looks and how it feels to hold. It feels MUCH smaller than the Titan. The flush touchscreen is much easier to use with the fingers than the inset touchscreen on the Titan. I personally can live without the keyboard, but I need Wifi so I'll probably keep the Titan and resell the Touch when I get bored of it. However, if the Touch had Wifi I would definitely keep it.
One thing I noticed about the Touch LCD vs. Titan, the Titan LCD is significantly better. It looks fairly uniform at any viewing angle, but the Touch has terrible vertical viewing angles. It washes out when tilted up or down. It seems to be a different LCD technology than the Titan.

Is trinity worse than the diamond?

Hi to All, i would like to post a provocative question since i've seen many of the guru developers moving towards the diamond, and myself I have been considering to move straight away.
Question: Is Trinity worse than Diamond?
My arguments in favour of the Trinity:
Trinity can be expanded with a minisd/microsd card and Diamond cannot
Trinity is quad band and Diamond is Tri-band
Trinity has IrDa and Diamond has not
Trinity has a beautiful one-hand Jog Wheel and Diamond has not
Trinity has today a fantastic mature community offering tens of roms covering different needs
Trinity has 1500 mA battery while Diamond has 900 mA battery
Trinity is cheaper - and you can probably buy three for the price of one diamond!
If you read this, you HAVE a Trinity!!!
On the contrary, the Diamond strengths:
Diamond has a VGA screen, same size of the trinity
Diamond is 6.9 mm thinner
Diamond is 33 grams lighter
Diamond has a 24% faster clock CPU
Diamond has 192 Mb Ram vs. 49 Mb
Diamond is USB 2.0 while trinity is 1.1
Diamond has a built-in FM radio (with headset connected)
Diamond has a 3.1 MPixel camera vs. 1.92 Mpixels
Diamond has an internal accelerometer
By definition, i am cutting corners. However, at the end of the story for people like us with fresh up-to-date roms isn't this the full story?
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=pdacomparer&id1=533&id2=1311
some dispointing thing about the diamond :
1- the GPS have lag: for example if you passing under a bridge, your GPS software shows you that you still behind the bridge
2- low battrey life
3- when charging via USB the device got hot
4- when using GPS the device got hot
* If you read this, you HAVE a Trinity!!!

lol, this was a very good one))
Diamond costs 3 x times of Trinity
I love my Trinity but wish to have a Diamond just because more RAM and VGA screen...
Why Diamond is better(add-on to pzucchel list):
1. The Diamond is quad band now, with a new official firmware update that unlocks the 850mhz.
2. The Diamond does not have a jog wheel, but it has a touch scroll wheel, iPod-style
3. The Diamond has auto-focus camera.
4. The Diamond has a 4GB built-in internal storage
5. The Diamond has a stylus sensor.
6. The Diamond shouts off coolness.
Why Trinity is better(add on to pzucchel list):
1. The Trinity has a proper, working camera button. The Diamond on the other hand, uses a semi-touch process. Touch to focus, press to capture. In theory, its great, but in practice, the touch component sometimes doesn't recognise a touch, so you can't take a picture until you restart the application.
2. The hardware of the Diamond is not properly utilised by default. You have to manually activate some settings or install new applications to maximise their full potential.
3. Too many people unfamiliar with the PDA phone world and not intending to get familiar with it are getting Diamonds because they look cool. Most Trinity users, on the other hand, own a Trinity because they know the features and want and know how to use them. In short, Trinity owners are an exclusive group of people.
4. The Trinity has a more solid feeling power button.
5. The Trinity shouts off professionalism.
6. The Trinity has a better speaker. The Diamond is too sharp.
Why they are the same:
1. They both have back covers that are great fingerprint magnets.
As Aqrab said, the battery life of Diamond is on the short side, and the Diamond gets heated up easily. I haven't really used the GPS yet so no comments on the GPS part.
Personally, I don't think one is better(or worse) than the either. The Diamond has its own strengths and weakness, and so does the Trinity.
I'll gladly use either any day.

He said Trinity has the same SIZE screen not the same resolution! And he does mention the VGA screen of diamond further above. So stop correcting mistakes that does not exist, only because you haven't read properly the post!
Is it only me or Diamond is extremely slow? I tried it yesterday in the store and the scrolling screen had more miss than hit?
And the "touch" software looks cool but extremely slow? My trinity uses SPB mobile shell and it's a lot more responsive than diamond.
Is diamond now 3-band HSPDA and 4-band GSM?

Worth upgrading from Kaiser to HTC HD?

Hi guys I currently have kaiser(MDA Vario III) flashed with custom 6.1 rom loads of extras etc Is it worth the upgrade from the Vario to HTC HD ?
Vario is too thick and I never use the keyboard would like media player but still have all features like sat nav, media player, business stuff like outlook calender etc
I like the touch interface on the custom rom and opera works very very well I still use the stylus though not my finger.
So with the HD do you have a stylus or do you not really require one the interface is very responsive ?
Film or tv ep watching like smooth good quality ?
Out of the box ok or worth flashing with custom ROM ?
Cheapest place I have forund to get the HTC HD is orange contract worth £300 all including phone and 12 month contract.
Any better deals ? like o2 ?Thanks in advance guys
Hi,
I also upgraded from TyTn II which flashed to WM6.1 to Touch HD; The Touch HD obviously is huge improvement compared to TyTn, the system become more responsive (better CPU + RAM), ultra wide display (this is the most tempting), drive mode (once u plug in ur USB to desktop, ur memory card auto-mount).
Most of the time, I still use stylus to do inputting (old habit since Palm III era) instead of 'touch'. The video performance of coz better than TyTn II but a bit slower than Omnia i900.
Yes, it's ok to flash with custom ROM as long u got Hard-SPL.
Also jumped from Tytn II to a HD (via a Touch Pro).
Can highly recommend HD. Only thing I liked about the Omnia was the good sound but the HD also is pretty good.
I found the Touch Pro heavy and small and did not use the mechanical keyboard enough to justify the thickness of the device.
HD seems much more responsive and I rarely get any out of memory problems llike on Tytn.
I'm actually also using TF3D which I dumped when using the Touch Pro because the screen is too small. On the HD the TF3D is not too bad - a lot of eye candy I admit and I have run into various limits of TF3D (like only small number of Stocks, limit to number of visible SMS, etc). But, I generally launch the related App when I want to do real work.
I also use SecondToday with SBSH PocketBreeze as more detailed calendar. And, I have PI8 running very well.
I also jumped from tytn II to HD
Major leap ahead
Everything from music, video, gps is faaaaaaaar better
I went the same way. I miss the keyboard. I also miss being able to put it down to watch my slingstreams without having to find something to lean it against.
Apart from that its a far superior piece of kit in every possible way.
I migrated from the highly modded Tytn II too. On that machine I never have used the keyboard. So when I discovered the HD it was love on first sight. The looks of the HD remembered me of my Palm OS based Sony TH55.
I still own the Tytn II, but can't imagine anymore that I was so fond of it!
Go for the HD and I swear you 'll never look back.

I jumped from the ATT Tilt to Touch HD and love it. I couldn't go back to the Tilt now. Screen just looks soo much better. I do like the able to connect as drive instead, makes transfering slightly faster. I also had my Tilt with custom rom. I now have my Touch HD running L26 Rom HD ROM and you don't need to Hard-SPL it, you can do it with USPL, that way you can flash back stock and do send back if nec.
I too am a Kaiser to HD migrator. The clincher for me was the screen resolution, and the HD is amazing. I don't miss the keyboard as much as I thought I would, but I don't have the urge to write a long email with the HD. But texting is fine. Go for it!

Touch2 vs Diamond2

Hi mates,
I am thinking of getting me a new cell phone for Christmas so I wanted to ask you for some advice. The touch2 is on a bit lower level than the diamond2, but for me is the diamond2 very ugly. On the other side, the diamond2 has a larger screen and better camera I also wanted to ask you if you think it's easy to write everything on the screen as I write more often SMS instead of calling, and my current cell phone does have a physical keyboard. Another thing I wanted to know is the battery life - my N95 can't handle even a whole day at full usage, so I was hoping the touch2 would be better here..
Thanks for your replies in advance!
//seclubbg
i had that question too and i decided to get the diamond2, because:
1.larger screen with wvga(400*800, while the touch2 has 240*320)
2.diamonds hardware is much better and it as openGl and so touchflo 3D
3.there are a lot of dimond roms, while the touch doesnt have a single one
I bought the Touch2, there's a seperate 3,5mm jack for headphones.
You can buy a 3.5mm Audio adaptor for the Diamond2, so you can connect 3.5mm audio jacks anyway.
http://www.htcaccessorystore.com/nl/p_htc_item.aspx?i=179130
I went for the Touch2. Its not that i gonna surf a lot on the phone or watch a lot of movies. I don't like the current (dead/colorless looking) Diamond2 interface and not gonna install rom's while phone is under warranty. So rather had the Touch2 who is compact, with a nice looking interface. Bad thing about Touch2 is not having the auto focus. Close up pictures suck.
Good luck finding you're phone Seclubbg.
i bought my touch2 after an experience with my diamond ( stolen ).
I can tell u the display is pretty nice, the difference with a vga or wvga is noticeble only on certain app...
The bad only thing on this phone are:
- no g-sensor
-no light sensor
- bad camera.
However if the diamond2 is the same as diamond, tf3d doesn't support rotation with g-sensor and the rotation of the telephone while using opera sometimes results in program crash.... ( i'm not telling g-sensor is useless, teeter was AWESOME!!!)
On the other side touch2 has win 6.5 that imho is great compared to 6.1.
Fastest, more stable and the interface is more finger friendly than 6.1.
Although have have it since 2 days the autonomy of the battery is much looonger.

it is here
Hope you find it helpful.
screen damaged completely
i have reached htc service centre and there they said that screen has damaged and it has to be replaced. There is no oily look at the center of the screen and i havenot used more pressure on it. I think pressure sensor under the screen has gone. Thanks for replying
No problem!
If its within warranty, then yes, get HTC to service it for you, if its out of warranty, you can choose to get whoever you want to service it for you, you can even DIY the repair (if you have the confidence)
Its out of waranty

Its dificult to get hd screen from open market in India. So i decided to get it from service centre. I want to sell it and have a diamond-2. Are you thinking daimond2 is better than hd
thanks for replying and your thread for repairing screen is excellent.
I think the HTC Desire or the HTC Touch HD2 are better then the Touch HD, I haven't heard of a Diamond2 yet.
The desire just launched in my country, its beautiful, extremely fast and pretty, but if you go with it, you're stuck with Android OS, so the main consideration is weather you'll use GPS software on your mobile, if not, then the Desire is a very good choice, if so then you'll need to have it on a data plan to utilize google maps as a gps.
thank you for your kind words nagasai
Htc diamond2 is nothing but topaz

I am a medico studying in India. There are lots of medical software for windows mobile as android is a new os it has less. So i have to be with the windows mobile. Htc desire is a very good mobile but it is with android and hd2 is very big and its difficult to carry it in my jeans pocket. SO i think htc topaz i.e., diamond2 is a better choice
Tweak to improve screen sensitivity
Tweak your registry settings to improve screen sensitivity. Because most of the custome roms are with low sensitiviry to improve it follow this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=343506&page=2
Yeah, I tweak mine too, I use HD Tweaks, it has options for making the sensitivity good.
