Huh? It already allows you to plug in a 5 pin USB cable into the power side (5 pin). What are you trying to do?

I would guess power in and audio out at the same time
I am using my phone in my car and don't want the power cable and music cable hanging down in front of my dash. What I want to do is run a USB cable out of my phone, drill a small hole and have the HTC TyTN Y Cable and everything else hidden.
Ooops when I said drill a small hole I am drilling it in my dash. I am just trying to extend the HTC TyTN Y Cable and unfortunately that is a different style connect on the end so there are no cables out there with a female end. So I figured I would splice it.
So can this be done?
If you want to split audio/power, you CAN NOT USE an USB cable.
See the difference between AUDIO jack (hearphones) & USB Jack.
also, the jack of the earphones is good, but it hasn't connected the power cables to the pins. i hope if you cut the cable, you will find only audio/mic cables.
so, or you buy a TyTn Y Cable and cut/extend it; or you have a male connector like that on earphones, and do with it all that you want.

What I want to do is leave the headphone and power intact and cut the male end off(the end that plugs into the phone) then take a regular USB 5pin cord and splice it onto that. Does that make more sense.

If you just want to extend it, buy the 3 way adapter from Brando and mod that one. What we're trying to tell you is that there are 11 wires in that harness, so if you want to extend the cord, all you'll need to do it splice a new set of extension wires in (multiple USB cables?). If you can solder, that's no big deal. I have mine mounted in a Brodit powered cradle with audio going into my car stereo, and the y cable is tucked behind the cradle and the wires hidden into my dash.
How many wires are in the Brando? Is it pretty easy to splice? Sorry if I am asking a stupid question.

I haven't taken mine apart, but I assume it still has 11 wires (one for each pin). The reason I was suggesting this is because if you want to have a 3.5mm audio out, you either have to buy an HTC-specific USB to 3.5mm audio adapter for $12-$15, or you can buy the Brando unit which includes everything for ~$20 (and if you screw it up, you're only out the $20).
Splicing wires isn't difficult, but if you're not handy with a soldering iron it might be. These a pretty small wires (30 gauge?). Practice on an old USB cable first.
I already have the 3.5mm headphone jack and the power connected. My only problem is the end that plugs into the phone. Instead of making a standard mini USB HTC changed it so it is a different shape. I guess I figured I could just cut off that end and it would be same as any USB cable. I didn't want to go into the jack itself where the headphone and power is.

They changed the jack because it won't work in a USB plug - it has 11 pins (5 for USB power/sync and 6 for audio). You can extend it either way, but it takes 11 wires to extend it. I have a similar setup in my car, so I understand where you're coming from, but aside from extending the cable I've not seen a better solution...
What a pain. What really stinks is I only need to go about 8 inches.
I drive a prius with an AUX adapter (accepts a minjack) does anyone know of a cable that is a mini USB to mini jack?

you need a male USB to female 3.5mm adapter. Often, they come as male USB to both female 3.5mm and female USB. Many, many sites have them. Search for "USB audio splitter" or somthing like that.
Once you have one of those, you need a standard male 3.5mm to male 3.5mm headphone cable.
I have never seen a male USB to male 3.5mm cable.
Also, indicating which country you are in when asking where to buy something often helps, this is an international forum
Be aware that not all mini USB accessories work with the Kaiser. Some have the connector pins on the top, some on the bottom. You think that would be universal (thats what the "U" in USB stand for, you know!), but its not. And if you buy an accesory w. the wrong pin layout, it won't work.
I have read this is the case with some headsets, so the adapters may be the same case. Try to buy one that specifically says that it works with the Kaiser (or at least other HTC phones).

Then you will just need a male to male 3.5 mm adapter which you should be able to find at any Radio Shack. I am using this Seidio adapter with a set of Shure earbuds with my Kaiser and it works fine.
I haven't tried it on the Pruis's aux port yet, I travel through the week and haven't had as much time to play with it as I'd like. I'll do it when I get home Friday and post to this thread to let you know how it works.
I have paired the phone with the car via Bluetooth and transferred contacts fine (although transferring contacts is one at a time) and calls work fine as well.
I tried the Seidio adapter with the M to M 3.5 mm to the Aux jack on the Prius and it worked fine. I also ran the Odyssey nav software while playing MP3's through TCPMP and that worked fine. Only problem was the volume on the nav software was too loud when TCPMP was at the right volume, the volume controls don't work independently.
Didn't especially care for the Odyssey software (running the 14 day trial right now) the one route I mapped gave me a really weird route. I'll try the rest of the weekend and see how it works, but it's also not extremely intuituve from what I've seen so far.

It's not universal because ExtUSB is a proprietary extension to the USB standard.
Anything involving analog audio is NOT covered by the USB standard.
I have a a USB mini extension lead, so I'm trying to plug in a 3-to-1 adapter to it. So male USB mini, the a-symetrical type (flat one side) to a female USB mini, the symetrical type (wings on both sides). Obviously this doesn't fit!
So is there a USB Mini (female a-symetrical) to USB mini (male symetrical) adapter?
Or could someone at least tell me their proper names so I can google it?
What are you trying to achieve? If it is to increase the cable length between the 3in1 and the Kaiser, I think you would need an ExtUSB patch lead with all 11 pins wired to retain the functionality of the 3in1. I don't know if these leads even exist.
The Asymetrical female socket, like the one on the base of the Kaiser, is double sided on the internal plastic "island" and has 5 contacts on one side and 6 contacts on the other.
The power and data are on the top 5 connectors.
The audio in/out & talk/end are on the bottom 6 connectors.
This is known as ExtUSB and is peculiar to HTC devices.
The Symetrical plug/socket is standard mini USB and will only ever have power and data connections. The mini USB plug only connects to the top 5 connectors in an ExtUSB socket.

I purchased this adaptor for less than £10 from ebay. It ticks all the boxes for me and is the most discrete adaptor I could find. The 3in1 adaptors like this one dont come with a mic so wont work as a hands free without additional adaptors.
My intention is to have the plug fixed to a Brodit mount. The cable is no thicker than headphone cable. This 90cm cable will route to behind the steering wheel on the cowling. The adaptor is flat and low profile with the answer/hang up button on the top. Easily pressed through the steering wheel spokes. The audio 3.5mm and mini USB leads plug in at right angles to each other but will easily route out of site, behind the dash to USB car charger and 3.5mm MP3 In socket on the head unit.
It all works as expected, and even at Motorway speeds callers can hear me clearly. Voice Command works fine, TomTom and Media Player sound great. My only problem is alternator whine when charging, which I think is just an earthing problem. When I get it all properly finished I will post some photos.
After work, wife, kids etc. have finished with me.

My only problem with it is that (I assume) it forces the kaiser into handfree mode even when all I was to do is charge and listen to music from the 3.5mm connection.
Again, I am assuming here, but I thought the second adapter you cite would only initiate hands free when I plug in the hands free into its port. I could be wrong on that one though.
Perhaps my issue is a small price to pay for 8gbs of music in the car

I dont have the bulky 3in1 to test, sorry. For me when listening to music and TomTom the audio mutes when I take a call and then resumes seamlessly on hang up without needing to physically touch the Kaiser. I only need to touch the Kaiser to press the Voice Command key once to launch programs and initiate calls.

Anyone find a source for USB extension cables for the Touch Pro? I want to run a cable in my car from my touch pro mount to the center counsle where I will have the audio dongle. which will branch off to a charger and line out to my Aux in. Otherwise I have to have the exposed audio adapter and then two cables running out of that instead of the one single extension cable I want to run to the center console. Really hoping I don't have to build my own.
I suspect this will be hard to find, considering it's not just a standard mini USB cable.
I like the idea behind it though. I was thinking about the same type of thing in my car and I'm waiting on getting a couple different docks so I can see if they will fit my needs once I rip them apart.

Been looking at all the normal sources, the problem is I need it to end in the same female plug that is in the Touch Pro (so I can plug the audio dongle into it). Having zero luck finding it.
I have to disappoint you: if you connect both the audio and the charger from your car, you'll get a loud noise because of lack of grounding in car

Looks like the streak might have usb host... if you look in the sdcard settings it has the option to unmount ums (usb mass storage) devices and the option to format them.
Im on the 8105 2.1 o2 rom on a us att dell streak.
Ill make a cable soon to test but was wondering if anyone else tried th already

I just so happened to have the correct hardware on hand to try this so I gave it a go, looks like it does! I'm actually typing this message with a USB keyboard- I can't get it to mount a USB drive yet, but I intend to brush up on my Linux commands and syntax tomorrow and try again- if I can get it to mount external storage, all of my dreams have officially come true (minus the Froyo, that is).
Edit: I'm on the MoDaCo custom ROM r2, 2.1 build 8105, for those interested.

Hey there, real interested in what you did to mod your cable to handle this. Was it a matter of tying the OTG pin to ground?
Did the streak supply power over usb? Many android devices cant, but I believe given the right cable mod the streak can.
I didn't have to do any mods on mine, I have the home dock (which converts the Streak's port to miniUSB) and a dongle that has male miniUSB on one end and female standard USB on the other. Streak on the dock, dongle in the back of the dock, and keyboard into the dongle.
I don't know if it supplied power or not, what would be the best way to check? Multimeter across the power/gnd should give 5V regardless of if it's powered, do I need to check the amperage as well? I was thinking I might just try firing up the ol' G1 and plugging it in, to see if it charges.

A good test would be to not have the dock plugged in to any power source. Dock your Streak, then use your adaptor with USB keyboard. Does it work? if so, the power is being supplied by the Streak.
If not, it doesn't prove that there is no way to get powered USB host out of the Streak, it would just show that it may require different connections (a modded cable or dock).
Then yes, it supplies power, my dock was unplugged the whole time. Rejoice! I foresee emulators with a USB gamepad in my near future...

Funny though, I tried the same with a gender changer a week or so ago and it didn't work for me. I think the difference must be that the cable you're plugging in to the dock must ground the OTG pin.
Unfortunately that probably means I'd either have to get a dock, or dissect and solder my USB cable to get the same.
Glad to see it works as i suspected. now all we need is some to make it mirror the display over the hdmi out

EiHter using the media dock with a male mini usb to female usb adapter, or i think using the standard usb cable with a female to female adapter placed on the end should work too.

Unfortunately I don't think a female to female adaptor alone will do the trick with the Streak USB Cable. I have one here, and it's not working.
I believe the reason is the USB OTG pin needs to be grounded to identify that we are in USB OTG mode (pin 4 as identified here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDMI).
I think the reason it's working with the dock for that person is because the dock exposes that pin at the mini B port and the cable adaptor he's using is an OTG cable that grounds the pin.
I haven't tried modding my cable for this yet, but will soon. My soldering iron is in storage right now unfortunately.

Unfortunately, no. only 4 wires run through the cable and are exposed at the other end. You would need a 5th (the USB ID, aka OTG lead).
So I just finished creating my own modded cable and it is working great.
I've attached pictures of the build here. I found that this only works in Android 2.1 (8150 build for me, may work with other 2.1 builds). 1.6 seems like it doesn't have the drivers for this.
DISCLAIMER: If you try to duplicate what I did here, you're taking the risk of damaging your cable beyond repair, and if you do something incorrectly and plug the cable in to your Streak, there is a definite possibility you will damage your streak permanently. So anything you do, do so carefully and at your own risk!
I will say this; this cable is HARD to de-shield! It has metal shield all around the parts we need to get to, and I had to cut with metal clippers and desolder parts of it to get the shielding off. Not pretty, and pretty risky for damaging the cable. I would advise you buy an extra cable before trying this. I didn't have an extra, but I was really risking not being able to charge my device or something if I broke my cable.
After removing the shielding you can see that there is a small PCB with traces marked 1 3 on the left, and then 2 5 on the right. These correspond to the PDMI specification at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PDMI .
For my build, I chose to solder a switch to bridge the OTG pin 4 to GND pin 2. This way, my cable can still be used as a normal USB cable as well. In one image I have flipped the opened PDMI connector over and you can see an orange wire I have soldered on to pin4. (One side of the PDMI connector has ODD pins, like 1,3,5,7... the other side has EVEN 2,4,6,8...). Pin 2 is the first pin on the right on the EVEN side, and pin 4 is the second.
As was stated in earlier posts, you can use a female to female gender changer for the other end of the USB cable, rather than soldering on your own connector or something.
Note that having the cable in OTG mode when plugging your streak in to your computer or power adapter over USB could damage something because OTG mode will start outputting power over the same pins that it's usually inputting from!!!

When I built my Dell Streak Mini USB adapter, I brought out PDMI pin 4 to the OTG pin on the Mini USB.
I tried it with 2 different cheap Mini USB to Standard USB ("A") female adapters, and tried several devices including a Apple Mini Keyboard/Hub, and USB Flash drives.
I also tried the same components on the Dell Home Dock.
They did not work, but I suspect that the Mini USB to Standard USB female adapters do not short the OTG pin to ground.
What we need is some that do. Then it would be plug and play at least for dock owners.

This thread is currently of great interest. Should it, in theory, be possible to hook up my Canon digi SLRs as mass storage devices then?
Sometimes being able to get the image onto a bigger screen has it's benefits. The Streak's screen is actually very well calibrated as well, compared to my hardware calibrated monitor!
In the ideal world i'd be able to tether and shoot using the streak (like I can with my laptop) but I'm realistic and know that's not likely to happen!
What I DON'T get is why Dell have put in USB host functionality without implementing it in the lead?
Well, I was going to hold off on cutting up a cable to try something, but I just had a cable go through the washer and dryer... and it was looking pretty bad and actually cut through the jacket and shielding on the wire... so I cut off the PDMI lead and about 3" of cable (right before the break).
Inside the jacket are 4 wires. Black, White, Green, Red. Obviously they correspond to the USB 2.0 spec... so I guess in some way, VDC, Ground, Data+, Data-... but no OTG wire.
Would anyone that opened up the connector know how these wire colors correspond?
What I really want is for my 80GB iPod to have it's music available to the Streak in my car, so here's what I was planning:
1) Cut up the Dell PDMI cable (done).
2) Cut up an old iPod to Firewire cable I have laying around
3) Splice VDC+ and Ground on the iPod and PDMI to the corresponding VDC+/Ground USB end of the original Dell Cable. This will plug into a 12V->USB Adapter (probably the Dell one) to power and charge both devices.
4) Splice the corresponding PDMI and iPod data transfer wires.
5) Ground OTG on Streak side and add a micro switch, like TheRain did...
I can then wrap this up in some custom cable thing shround thing that I'll figure out.
Little bit of research led me to the micro-AB receptacle that basically determines if a device is acting as a host or slave. So, I would say the preferred way to do this, instead of wiring in a switch, would be to find a receptacle and hack into it... so here's one you can get cheap:

This should be able to wire up something that basically puts the device into OTG mode when you connect a micro-A cable to the device, and a slave device when you connect a micro-B cable.
So solder/wire that up.. connect the Streak with a micro-A cable to a powered USB hub, connect the peripherals to the hub, and you should be good to go without a micro switch.
On an edit note, I also found a bare micro-AB female that you can buy... but it's more expensive than the previous adapter, so uh I guess it depends on how much time you want to spend tearing the adapter apart.
