Business people out there? - Touch HD General

Hi
I have my HD for already a week and it's amazing!!.
but I decided to buy it because I needed a tool like this for business purposes, by now I'm using it for mail on the go, and of course like a powerful agenda with Pocket Informant, but due my short experience with a pocket PC, I know that there must be much more uses and software that I don't know yet, then I would like to ask for advices about this matter, may be software or even tips to be able to to take more advantages of this incredible phone!
BTW I found this two thread, but are quite short

Thanks!!

hi, im not quite sure what you are asking for? but, i use mine for work to. i dont find the need for anything extra than what is already included in M$ mobile office
i use the calendar and outlook which is synced through my organisations exchange server though activesync over the mobile network. in the main i do this manually but also by setting it up to do autosync at intervals.
you can set it to have pushmail too if your companies mail server will allow this
pocket outlook does all that the full pc version does (near as dammit) email, access to my corporate address book, meeting scheduling and invites etc etc
is that what you wanted to know?

OK, here is the "business" oriented sub-set of all my apps:
apMemo 2.3 http://www.apsoftsystems.com/apmemo/index.htm
apMemo allows for alarmed note taking on the go
Ilium Listpro 5.0.0.2016 http://www.iliumsoft.com/site/lp/listpro.htm
Listpro is great - I use this for whole loads of lists on the PC and HD and swop the lists back and forth
Metro 5.71 http://www.nanika.net/Metro/
Metro is useful for business trips (and pleasure)
MxCalculator 2.1 http://www.trancreative.com
NewsGator Go! 2.0.0.25419 http://www.newsgator.com/Individuals...o/Default.aspx
I use a RSS feeder for business news
Pocket Informant 8.51 http://www.webis.net/index.php
RCX Lexipedia 1.2 http://www.revolution.cx/Lexipedia/Lexipedia.htm
Yes, I know this is an old app but it's still there when I need answers and don't want to go online
SBSH PocketBreeze 5.4.15 http://www.sbsh.net/products/windows...c/pocketbreeze
Fantastic today plugin to view my calender (must be used with SecondToday)
SPB Finance 2.7.0 http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/finance/?en
Not really business, but keeps track my my finances
From my thread comment: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3117017&highlight=secondtoday#post3117017

I use keepass for securing those important but (sometimes) easy to forget ID's & passwords:

thanks, well yes something like that I was looking for, but may be a little more focused in meetings and projects, I'm using list Listpro for this two purposes but I can imagine there are better and specialize software for this.
about meetings I need to lead meeting sometimes, and write down some ideas or comments in each topic on this meetings.
same with projects, I start a project, and I need to write down all the steps of it, and the progress of each one too
thanks Cheesy Dave, there are really useful app there!
thanks audscott

i guess im a caveman when it comes to such business things... i just use ms word to make lists
notepad for basic notes
i find that the ms mobile office suite included does all i need (along with the other software in pocket outlook such as tasks etc)
small tip if you do want to use a different front end like SBSH PocketBreeze or spb pocketplus etc
dont need to run secondtoday type progs which just chew up more memory, just untick manila from the today plugins screen and do away with manila. personally i find it to be just bells and whistles and not much function, uses loads more system resources than other after market apps with nothing more (less in my opinion) on offer
i use spb pocketplus together with spb weather and spb phone suite all sat as my front screen. i can access all my needed software with one touch, make calls with one touch, switch ring profiles with one touch fire up wifi with one touch... in fact 99% of what i need to do with my HD i do with 1 touch using this set of software. the only time i need to use the stylus is for typing (im kak handed using my fingers to type and am pretty fast with the stylus)
as i said up there^^^^ i use MS office for all my other bits as i can bang it stright over to my laptop to use the full versions if necessary
i guess its down to what you need, what you like and what you get used to. ive been using this combo of progs for 4 years now so am a bit stuck in the mud so to speak
ill try to do a screen grab of my today page to show you what i mean.... but you might not like it as i am very much in favour of function over form
(ive trialled spb mobile shell and spb diary but again find them unecessary.... why do you need a diary on your today screen when it is one touch away and a hell of a lot more confidential if your diary isnt open for all to see all the time (i work in healthcare so confidentiality is a big requirement! )

business
I have been using pda in my construction business for many years to keep appointments. I tend to forget them and rely on the alarm. I have most of the incoming phone calls redirected to the phone. I use agenda one because you can link contacts to appointements i.e the alarm sounds to tell me to meet Mrs Smith. I click on that and it brings up Mrs Smiths address.
We are trying business contact manager for outlook in the office as a CRM and have tried the pda add in to view them. It just does,t work. I have heard over other software that makes the contacts visible in outlook mobile.

I also use mine mainly for Business (and pleasure), work in an Australasian role with travel in Australia and New Zealand.
Must admit I am VERY impressed with the function and accuracy of WorldCard mobile. Sure beats the manual data entry of B-Card info
A few of the apps I'm using on my HD
SPB Traveller - to manage my flights, accomodation and rental car bookings.
GarminXT - with Australia and New Zealand maps to help me get to the places I need to.
SPB Weather - helps me know what to expect and what to take when I travel.
SPB Time - My travel alarm clock etc.
SPB Wallet - Helps me remember the multitude of logon details for company (and private)
systems access as well as credit cards and so on.
SPB Finance - Tracks my out of office expenses for me.
Pocket Investor - Mobile management of my stocks.
Softmaker Suite - A really great set of applications which provide me FULL edit and formatting alignment for my Word, Excel and Powerpoint files.
Pocket Informant - Replaces the PIM
RESCO Utility pack - Great file management for shifting documents around, deleting etc.
A few other general apps.
HD Tweak
Gsen
Sprite Backup
MSS Convertor
SKTools
SPB Mobile Shell (but using the "ChangeSKIN" application to provide multiple contact photo screens etc. )
SPB Phone Suite
SPB Brain Evolution

Hi jonajuna, I am a new Touch HD user (and this is my first PDA). Since you use the Office so extensively, could you please help me - how can I open more than one document e.g. in Excel? I often use Excel documents in my work and I constantly need to copy&paste info from one Excel file into another.
Thanks!

I'm also useing mine for business and pleasure. Works well with appointments, addresses, GPS, etc. during business hours.

I've picked up an HTC Touch HD, and I'm a semi-business/pleasure/personal user.
Here are some of the items that I found were useful for me.
As far as the MSDict and MSPhrase apps go, you can find English -> Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, French, German, Russian, Malaysian, Chinese (trad and simplified), Korean and so on!
Here are the links for the Japanese one since I've been up all night downloading these.
http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=3113
http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=639
And SPB Traveler is great when it comes on converting common knowledge from overseas such as units, clothing sizes and linguistics as it helps me identify and use the right phrases.
http://htc-touch-hd-t8282.handster.com/product.php?id=439
Also, since I'm both in class and at work, sometimes I'll need a really powerful calculator and the Touch HD does not disappoint with it's capabilities.

There you go, hope this helps.

Hi there,
i´m also one of those guys who using the HTC HD for business.
Maybe the programms i use, would be helpful.
At least it depends on your special needs.
Main focus for me:
Mail -> BBconnect
ToDo list -> MLO ( My Life Organized )
Calender -> Calender Touch
Travelling -> SPB Traveller

Sync support for Thunderbird email client (Sunbird Calendar)

We need some motivated talented CE people to help this Thunderbird Sync project take off.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tb-sync/
I know lots of people that refuse to use Outlook for email access. As you may or may not know (most likely know), one of the most popular alternatives seems to be Thunderbird. (makers of FireFox)
http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/ (v 1.x)
http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird.html (in beta)
Palm feels like it's going down hill lately.
(some unix based Palm OS in the works? we'll see....)
More and More people are going to want to try Windows Mobile phones. With so many rich features, how could you say no. It's only a matter of time before "they" need something to make it sync with their world though.
I have several friends that fit into this category may try out 6515's
I thought I'd put this out there to help nudge it along.
http://sourceforge.net/projects/tb-sync/
Luckily for me I'm fine with Outlook. (mostly due to my normal job)

but xda-developers has a larger pool of master jedi pocket pc users obviously
Another nice work around I thought might work is some kind of on screen address book via remote controll. I just emailed soti (makers of pocket controller professional) http://www.soti.net/default.asp?Cmd=Products&SubCmd=PCPro
the following:
__________
Hello,
I just started using Pocket Controller Professional on my HP iPaq hw6515. It works great for me and the skin looks slick!
I have a suggestion.
I know several people that REFUSE to use Outlook on their windows machine. This means they can not take advantage of using and/or synchronizing their pocket pc >contacts< very easily. Their email client of choice is normally Thunderbird.
What if you could use your Pocket Controller Professional so your Pocket PC is your address book? It would be really cool if you could open up contacts, and then have a new Thunderbird email message auto fill in the TO field based on what you click through the Pocket Controller screen. (an on screen address book linked real time some how with the ipaq contacts)
What do you think?

So, anyone up for the challange?

The project is still going ahead, although it's a little slower than expected due to my normal work.
The plan is as follows:
1. Get Email to Sync
2. Get contacts to Sync
3. Publish API for plugins.
I'm not planning on writing a calender/todo list sync just yet as Sunbird is still in it's infancy. (Although still pretty good) And once the plugin system is published other people can carry on the work.
Thanks for your interest in the project, hopefully it won't be too long before we are able to publish a beta.

cool, looking forward to sync my xda IIi with thunderbird and sunbird
Hello s4czech,
your project sounds really interesting. I'm employed at an Italian County, computer science department. We are starting a test phase to replace all commercial mail software we actually use (mainly Eudora, Outlook) with an open source solution, Thunderbird. Many of our employee use a shared calendar served by Microsoft Exchange. Now we are testing Sunbird and Calendar for Thunderbird, and LDAP as shared address book, and phpicalendar as shared calendar, syncronized with Sunbird via iCal (.ics) standard. Everything works fine, but now some customers are asking us for something to sync the calendar (basically the .ics file) with their palm (mainly Outlook for Windows CE). We now that Sunbird is still in its starting phase, but we believe its already a good (and simple) tool for calendar and appointments management. Do you know about something we could use for syncing .ics files on PDAs under Outlook? I read about your decision not to develop a conduit for thunderbird calendar extension. If you could change your mind, we can also think about paying something for this Can you please send me a private message or leave an answer here in order to contact you via email?
Thanks in advance
coolmann.
Hello,
It's not my project. I'm just an enthusiastic guy trying to get exposure to it to speed things along. I'm happy to hear more people like you have a true need though. The more minds the better!
I would post your situation/requests in the ThunderSync projects main forum at sourceforge.net

I sent a message directly to Darren F. - sol_bot and got the response I posted above.

OK. So this is how the project stands at the moment.
The user interface is complete.
The code behind it is unfortunatly lacking.
Anyone that can give assistance in the area of Thunderbird mail is seriously requested.
I can inject messages into Pocket Outlook (Most of the time anyway) but need some help in the Thunderbird area.
Read and respond to this message at:

Darn it. I've never used Sourceforge or the CVS system on a Windows XP machine.
So anyone that can tell me how to set it up correctly gets 2 brownie points.
On a different note, I'm thinking that this project may require an XPI file for Thunderbird. Anyone that has a clue about these can get in contact with me. (Pwetty Pwease).
I do hope this project experiences progress: it would be very nice to use a single program such a Sunbird to sync since it runs on all platforms.

Various Questions!!!

Hi There,
I am looking to purchase a device; mainly to be used to send/receive e-mail's on the move but also am interested in any extra functionality available to me!!
At the moment I am choosing between this (T-mobile Vario) and the Blackberry 8700. I was wandering if anyone would be willing to give me a quick comparison and maybe a personal reccommendation!!?
Also I was reading in a previous thread about a blackberry add on for the Vario....would anyone be able to give me a rough run-down on how/if that works at all please!!
I appreciate your understanding of my simple questions!!
Many Thanks
Dave
HTC Wizard .. its both cheaper and beter.
What good feature do you see in BlackBerry that HTC Wizard doesn't have?
I'm guessing that you've never used either a PDA or a Blackberry. The reason I say this is because if you had, the differences would be immediately obvious.
Blackberry is good at doing one thing and one thing only: email. There are very few apps available, and even fewer are free. There is no touchscreen. Browsing is difficult because of this, and many programs are a pain for the same reason. WM Smartphones has the same issue.
Both do email, but Blackberry is generally better (for now). What WM PDAs do better than Blackberry is... everything else. Look through these forums (fora?) and see what other people are doing with their PDAs. Anything they can do, NO MATTER THE PDA, you can do with a Wizard, and with very few exceptions, cannot do with a Blackberry.
My boss has a Blackberry from work, and I have a Wizard. I can't get my work email on my Wizard because it's not allowed yet at our organization. BUT, I can browse Outlook Web Access and view it when I want. I also can get my 5 personal email accounts on my Wizard, which he can't do on his Blackberry. Finally, he tried browsing Kelly Blue Book when buying a car, failed miserably and called me, and I looked it up on my Wizard.
Next, I have mapping programs, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, games, astronomy, a camera, dictionary, ebooks, music, videos, pictures, and on and on...
IMHO, anyone who's ever owned even a basic PDA would never bother choosing a Blackberry. You just lose so much functionality. If you don't need that and just want email, go for it.

Email with Wizard isn't a problem after the last ROM where SyncML for e-mail (push) is supported. You also have VPN support to accessing company networks.
uwaku .. what type of company mail setup do you have? You should not blame the Wizard for that your company don't allow you to connect your e-mail.
Comparing SyncML and BlackBerry.. is BlackBerry even a standard protocol? SyncML is a standard:
http://www.openmobilealliance.org/tech/wg_committees/workinggroups.html
Cool; sounds like the Wizard is definately more for me than the Blackberry....which is what I was leaning towards anyways. The one thing that I did want to know is whether you can get Hotmail on to the Wizard without having to go through the web browser (ie; go to www.hotmail.com).
Many Thanks
yes, hotmail access is pretty good on the wizard, It comes with Pocket MSN, once you've put your username and password into that it will add your hotmail emails and account the the windows email application, so no messing with www.hotmail.com

What Finance proggie do you use?

Hi, just wanted to know a good finance program for my pocket, doesn't matter if it's a freeware or shareware. your recommendation is appreciated.
There are two main ones out there that are pretty good. Both support synchronization with MS Money (neither sync to the 2007 version yet but have updates pending) or Quicken. Very much suggest trying the demos of both to see what works for you best:
SPB Finance: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/finance/?en
Inesoft Cash Organizer: http://www.inesoft.com/eng/index.php?in=premium.htm

Have used Cash Organizer for years!! Suits my needs allowing for scheduled/recurring transaction and setup of multiple accounts. Stores the transactions in registry dB's so upgrading app doesnt mean loosing all the data. Also provides very simple backup of data. Finally there is a today plugin if needed (I have never used that part)
Matt
I've tried all three (that I know of):
MS Money for Pocket PC (free)
spb Finance ($25)
Cash Organizer ($25)
MS Money is flakey, I've had it lose transactions. Also it doesn't want to sync with Desktop MS Money using AKU 2.3
SPB Finance seemed okay but I just didn't like the "Look & Feel" also there were some sync issues and I hate that. I just seemed a bit limited, you know felt like it should do more (seems mature compared to MS Money for PPC but really isn't).
I'm currently on the trial period of Cash Organizer and I'm loving it. It's almost like having full-blow MS Money on my phone and the sync hasn't failed me yet. I'm gonna buy this one!

Your favourite mail application!

After messing around with pocket outlook for a while, i thought: surely there must be some other nice mail applications out there.
I found a few, but being reluctant to install several ones, trying them out, and bining them after a while, i thought: hey, why not ask everyone else what their favourite mail application is besides pocket outlook.
The quality of pocket pc apps is rising rapidly (remembering a few rubbish ones i stumbled upon along the way) so there has to be some rather fine mail apps out there that perhaps even outdo pocket outlook (in all it's splendor...)
So, whats your favourite?
Subject edited:
Try WebIS FlexMail. It's a great product that even allows for mail aliases. It also supports HTML mail viewing with POP/IMAP accounts.
It has a very nice feature of an "integrated mailbox" (one repository for mail/SMS/MMS -- optional of course). Gives the device more of a Blackberry feel.
Unfortunately, Exchange ActiveSync mail is still plain old ugly text... (not FlexMail's fault).

Hello - and can anyone help me sync Lotus Notes ???

Afternoon all...
I you might tell I'm very new to XDAdevelopers, the folks at Inkino suggested I take a look and get your advice as I've just taken the plunge and replaced my creaking Palm T3 witha shiney new HTC Touch HD and working being what is is I'm stuck with Lotus Notes 8 as a "productivity tool".
I'm somewhat grumpy to find that haven't dug very deep into my pocket for the HD and less deeply for the Sync "middle-ware" IBM EasySync Pro that the two won't talk and the whole exercise looks like a sectacular waste of money.
During the first sync, while loading EasySync Pro into the PDA memory (not the card) I get this message on the PDA:
cesetup.dll
"Unable to launch \Windows\211\XCPCSyncSvr.exe : Error 2"
I've tried tweaking the registry "HKLM - Security - Policies - Policies - 0000101b" to a "1", with no effect. I spoken with HTC support and they blame IBM, IBM are blaming HTC and WM6.1.
Not good -
Is there a tested solution ?
To recap
HTC Touch HD running WM6.1 -> Ibm EasySync Pro v4.2.6 -> Lotus Notes 8
I want to sync "Calendar", "Contacts", "Memos" and "To Dos" - not Email.
Any help or advide would be greatfully received...
Yours VeryGrumpy...
There's a lot of discussion about WM6.1 "security policies" - is the issue that EasySync Pro doesn't have a recognised Certificate ?
MS -vs- IBM ?
As a heads up
I think you'll be hardpressed to find much help on the topic, as I don't think Lotus Notes plays nice with wm.
Though I'd like to see lotus notes calander/email on wm as well
I use Lotus Notes (6.5 - I know!) at work. I use a piece of software (not free) called companionlink to sync to a google account.
Until recently I used OggSync to sync my Google account with my Touch HD, but have just started trying Googles Activesync client for Calendar and contacts.
The best I've seen is mNotes from Commontime (again not free) - it can even give you push syncronisation if your IT department will play ... if not then there's a desktop version.
The other approach I've tried is to sync my blackberry (supplied by the company and synced with Lotus Notes) to a google account and the Touch HD to the google account as well.
Not used it but emoze also claims to play with Lotus Notes, so it might be worth checking that out?
Solution in my case
Hello mate,
I had the same problem and here how I fixed it.
First of all start with a fresh installation.
1. Remove EasySync from your PC
2. Uninstall EasySync from you HD
3. After that navigate to \Windows\211 and delete the folder 211.
You will not be able to do it right away so you will need to rename to 211v and then back again to 211. Once you do this, delete the folder.
4. Reinstall and it should work.
Now the tricky part that happens when you restart your HD.
Download MortScript( http://sto-helit.de/index.php?module=download&action=view&entry=65 ). You can read in the website to get more info for this app. if you are not already familiar with it. It basically allows you to run batch files.
After that open notepad and copy paste this piece of "code" and save it as XCPCSyncSvr_101.mscr and put it in \windows\startup folder but make sure you delete the application start up link in the \windows\startup
Rename("\Windows\211","\Windows\211v")
Rename("\Windows\211v","\Windows\211")
Run("\Windows\211\XCPCSyncSvr.exe")
If(ProcExists("XCPCSyncSvr.exe"))
SleepMessage(3,"XCPCSyncSvr started")
Else
Message("XCPCSyncSvr NOT started!")
EndIf
This will do the trick. Make sure that you will do this procedure before you restart your HD.
If something is unclear let me know to clarify it.
(I found the solution in a search long time ago, so credit to them)
Please let me know, how this worked for you.

Am working Lotus Notes with EasySync Pro with absolutely no problems . Also the calendar in WM is very good, as you can see the attendees and also the topic which a meeting created in Notes includes.
I will post a screenshot later today.

Here are some screenshots from my calendar sync with notes. Unfortunately am not using email sync.
I am a Lotus Notes Administrator at work just had a read of this thread.
Has your IT department investigated Lotus Traveler.
Push email, Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Journal synching and pushing for lotus domino servers to Windows mobile or symbian devices.
http://www-01.ibm.com/software/lotus/products/notes/traveler.html
We use this at work with HP Ipaqs instead of blackberry or BES (as this is free if you already have a notes licence so the only cost is the hardware of the device which you have already)
and its very very good expecially if your company is running a 8.5 domino server where encryption, notes rich text and even sametime (instant messaging) can be gotten working.
Jeremy
You can also consider the use of mNotes from Cadenza.
It i not free, but works really well
How?

I use Traveller myself on my company phone (TyTn 2) and it's a great piece of software.
I have never a lot of success with VPN connections on WM, but that said I've never really tried that hard at it either. If you can establish a VPN connection on your device then it should work quite happily.
The best solution would be to find someone in your IT department who would be interested in getting it rolled out. If Notes / Domino is your corporate mail platform and you have a number of workers with WM phones this shouldn't be hard.
Traveller itself can run over HTTPS and uses Domino authentication so it's fairly secure and forwarding it's ports through the firewall offers very little risk.
Whatever you do it's going to involve your IT dept. as the software has to be installed on a server, but the installation is easy enough that I rolled it out in about 15 minutes.

Hello mate,
I had the same problem and here how I fixed it.

I'm a Notes consultant and have Traveller working beautifully with our VPN. Our server is Domino 8.5 but it is designed to work with 8.0 also. The Traveller install was very easy and can be freely installed on Domino servers. I have an HTC S620 with WM6.0. I had awful trouble getting a PPTP VPN connection to work and finally gave up (seems to be an issue with PPTP client in WM6.0). However, it works really well with an L2TP connection with certificates. It automatically syncs your mail, calendar, and tasks. If you use Actions\Synchronize Address Book and Actions\Synchronize Journal while in your mail , it will also sync your contacts and personal journal. It can auto-sync or you can do it manually. Mostly I do it manually over wi-fi but it works on GPRS too. I've chucked out my Blackberry in favour of this solution.
Thanks a lot for this workaround!! Just installed it and works pretty fine!
I was looking for something like that for almost four month
One way feasible is the above way, thanks.
And I found that if not run TF3D, there is no suh issue.
if you want to go a step further with notes, try to look into Onebridge.
it will require to put some additional infrastructure to your notes environment, but at the same time you can make really secure access.
this will enable your users to sync thru gprs, wi-fi, etc. with home notes servers. infrastructure could be distributed, access gateways could be installed in different countries for your notes environment.
scalable, relaible solution for your Windows Mobile, Apple iPhone, Symbian Nokia and SonyEricsson, Palm OS, and OMA DS/SyncML, to sync with Notes and also with exchange.
regards,
won't be cheap
Try to use MNotes

to moukis >>> hey bro, any explanation why the need to rename and execute separately? The difference between the mortscript and the .lnk is only the 'rename' line. I tried and it worked perfectly. Just want to know
