random freeze - Touch HD General

My phone freezes at random times. I couldn't figure out a pattern.
I bought it a week ago and at after some time I click on the power button to wakeup - it doesn't respond and sometimes I just leave it as it is and find the backlight still on showing the screen from 10 minutes ago and not responsive.
The only thing I can do is to soft reset the device but just yesterday it happened like 40 times. While frozen the gsm service is also down and the incoming calls are replied with "can't be reached at the moment" 2 days ago I hard reset the device and it froze again just after the hard reset - for that reason I believe it's a hardware or a firmware issue - not a software one.
ROM:1.14.414.2 24011 WWE
ROM date: 12/10/08
Radio version: 1.09.25.14
Protocol version: 52.49a.25.26U
Anyone with the same issue?
//anything like an eventvwr to see the logs? maybe I can figure out a pattern.

- Did you install the HTC hotfix?
- How old is your sim card? If it's very old, you may want to ask your provider for a new one.

Thx for the questions - unfortunately:
- Installed the hot fixes
- I just got a new subscription, my sim is new

"h..p://www.htc.com/sea/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=179&act=sd&cat=all"
Download and install the bottom fix.
edit: Sorry now I did see your reply.
Do a hard reset and after install again hotfix

Thanks for the advise, but it doesn't work either.
2 days ago I hard reset the device, applied the patch - still the same problem. Also in the link you wrote it says "screen stops responding for about 3 to 5 seconds when running" - My device just freezes at a point and stops responding. Most probably there is an IRQ trigger at the processor level that freezes all operations.

//doublepost

Same thing happened to me a few times.
Today I hat to soft reset 4 times!! with the button under the back cover because none of the buttons would do anything at all.
I also have the device for just over a week now.
I'll try and install the patch, but I don't think it will fix it because the description of the problem is totaly different.
I'll let you know..
grtz,
Pfeffa-rah

Pfeffa-rah, I suppose you bought it from Netherland - and I bought it from Belgium, most probably with the same shipment - there might be a production or shipment problem. Its good to know that I'm not alone =)
By the time can you write down ROM, ROM date, Radio version and Protocol version?
Looking forward to hear from you,
Kaya

Hi I just installed the hotfix and played around with it.
The hotfix did nothing at all!
It still froze on me.
Rom version: 1.14.404.3 (22237) NLD
RomDate: 12/09/08
Radioversion: 1.09.25.14
Protocolversion: 52.49a.25.26U
I might try backing up this rom and installing another one...
I've had good experiences wit dutty's roms on my TytnII..
But I need time for that. And time... well... there's never enough
I installed a lot of software in My HD. I was thinking of doing a hard reset and installing the programms one by one. However, since you have the same problem and it didn't work for you. I guess that's no use then..
Damn, I love my Blackstone, but this random freezing really spoils it!
grtz,
Pfeffa-rah

I will warn you on changing the rom 'cause we aren't using the same rom version but facing the same problem. This might mean - it is either a problem with the radio version/protocol or a hardware issue. If its a hardware issue, a cooked rom won't make much of a difference. And I wouldn't risk to blow its warranty if it is really a hardware problem that would need a replacement.
You long live my friend, nothing explains this situation better than this:
"Damn, I love my Blackstone, but this random freezing really spoils it!"
// the only software didn't get effected from hard reset is igo8 which was in my sd - do you by any chance have it too? maybe but just maybee it might be screwing around with the gps and cause trouble but its really a long shot

Same issue did appear in Greece, in 4 different devices. Two (2) of them bought from Expansys and two (2) from local market. One of them returned the device to the local resseler and they changed motherboard.
Now me, after installing official ROM and Cooked ones (Panosha 1.3, 1.4, 1.4.1, 1.5) and having always after a couple of days the same problem, now I am running Panosha Black Pearl 1.6 with no problems at all yet.
My devices info :
I also have to mention that probably the problem has nothing to do with specific software / program, since I've tried official ROM, with nothing else installed (completely clean device and NO SD card inside)
HTC Touch HD, S/N HT844..., bought from Expansys on 10/11/08, ROM now : Black Pearl 1.6 WWE Full (Original 1.14.405.3 build 22273 WWE, ROM date 24/10/08), Radio version: 1.09.25.14

evharisto poli ktsak =)
Now we can be almost sure that its not a rom or a software issue as the problem is spotted on different rom versions. Hopefully we have the same radio and protocol version which either of them might be the cause (I suppose ktsak didn't made a change on it). Or a hardware problem ofcourse.

Yes, protocol and radio version are the original ones, never changed.
Thats why i've tried 5 or six different ROMs, in order to exclude the possibility of software affect

My Blackstone was very easy to freeze. When I opened a lot of programms and then used the manager to close all of them at once, (I use the SPB pocket plus X-button menu for that....) it woud freeze 9 outof 19 times.
What I have tried:
1. remove SIM and SD-card.
I couldn't freeze it after that. I tried 15 times. I didn't freeze even once.
2. With simcard but no SD.
Couldn't freeze it.
3. Formatted SD-card and copied everything back to it.
(use micro-SD to USB adaptor for that)
It only froze once. After that until now, I couldn't make it freeze.
Since it still froze 1 time, I think it is not the solution.
Especially because of ktsak's post....

However, I will still experiment with it a bit.
I changed the class 4 one I got with the device with a class 8 one that I already had. That is the one I am using now.
What SD-cards are you using?
(There were also freezes without SD-cards installed?)
I will use it with the class 8 re-formatted SD-card for a while and see if it freezes. If it does, I will try the slow one.
I will report back here.
ktsac: let us know if the Black Pearl still works or if it doesn't. I am used to flashing my phones all the time, so I am not afraid of it.
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah

FYI
Is there a way to format the SD card from the device? I haven't tried that yet but I don't have a compatible card reader or an adapter either.
And I also tried to run a lot of programs and kill them all - it froze... It might mean a problem with process killing.

As mentioned in previous message, I've also tried with SIM card and NO SD and had the problem as well.
Also have to clarify that my miroSD card is a Class 2, SanDisk 8GB capacity, officialy supplied with the package. Never tried anything else.
Probably you also mean 8 GB and not Class 8, since, as far as I know, the fastest in the market is Class 6. Class 8 does not exist, you' ve made a mistake. Now, since last Monday, with Black Pearl 1.6 WWE installed, the device operates with no difficiencies, no freezing at all. Thats my news

I just tried it hoping our problems might not be the same. I must point out that it DID make a difference in my case. I only managed to freeze it once since yesterday. (And I really tried hard!). And even then it was a different freeze than the other ones. The buttons still vibrated my device and I could still switch the screen on and off. I crashed it by opening 16 tabs in opera and then close opera, so it could be just opera crashing.....
The verry first freeze could have been the result of already corrupted data in memory since I didn't soft-reset it after I switched SD-cards...
So I still have some hope that formatting did the trick... some....

Yes indeed I misread the tiny 6 for a 8 .... Re-examining it with a magnifying-glass, I could just see the difference
So it is an 8 GB class 6 micro SD card...

Last night i did install Black Pearl 1.7. This morning tried to open the device from StandBy mode, same problem No response. Tommorow morning I'm sending the device to the Sevice (local Reseller here in Greece) . Tired to flash again and again, in order to find a ROM that the device acts normally
Besides that, IMO this is not a ROM issue, nor other software issue. It is a HARDWARE problem

I am sorry to hear that the ROM did not help.
My experiments failed also. Yesterday my Blackstone froze again.
I agree with you that it must be a hardware problem. (again after using close all...)
I think I will have to turn in my device too then, and go back to my Tytn II.
Damn, i didn't like my Tytn II from the start. (well.. from week three or so...) But at least I can trust it not to freeze on me...
Does anyone have any sugestions? anything we didn't try before?
Plz. help.

Brand new Trinity freezes on soft reset (Green Windows Mobile screen)?

I received my new P3600 last night and played around with it a little. I installed quite a few apps on to the storage card.
Now, what happens is that when I soft reset the device, it keeps on freezing at the green page saying (Windows Mobile - Direct Push Technology). last night I have seen the little spinning thing, now I dont even see this anymore.
Does anyone have the same problem? I am about to return to the device to the seller but want to make sure that really is a device problem rather then anything else.
Any experience with this?

well, I keep resetting and eventually the device does start up (out of 10 resets, it works 3 times).
I am wondering though if i should return this one asap. I have had a few devices over the years but never seen a problem like this.
Is resetting a known problem for P3600's?
The error was not the device but one of the applications, I installed.
Glad you're sorted!
Which app was it- as a warning for other users to avoid?

Mine has just done it now. Apparently it is usually an application on the device that is causing problems. I would guess something along the lines of a today plug in or similar.
Trinity Rox
I've had my trinity now for about 2 months.
I just did a hard reset using the clear storage option on a WM6 rom I installed. I ran the "miniSD HC v3.1.zip" fix but my 512 card just vanished on boot up. Came back and saw the card, No problems. A word of warning before you start toying with your new Phone. put "PPCPimBackup" on your storage card and backup all your contacts etc. This app is a life saver.
Hello,
I have the same problem.
What to do?
just boght the p3600 and after using it 2 days i cant restart it.
its stuck whene the screen shows Windows mobile detect push technology.
what to do?
i have WM 5

New to the whole scene, getting started

I have just aquired an xda ii from a friend and am very eager to get started but I have no clu eon what exactly I need to do.
First off I have read the FAQ's and what not and understand what everything seems to do.
However I beleive my xda is locked as when I try to put in my 3 sim card, it just says invalid sim or not recognized. Searching around the forums I have located the various unlocking tools but am not sure which one to go for. Also is there even any chance of it working with my 3 sim card?
Secondly, do I need to upgrade anything with it? Ideally what I want is to run tom tom navigation on it aswell as all the others features of the xda. (Im still searching around on how I check my version exactly >.<)
Thirdly, there appears to be a problem with the sound. Sometimes it beeps and such as normal, other times it dosent. Is there anywhere that can repair these sort of faults?
Thank you in advance for the time!
EDIT:
After playing around I found the information
ROM Version - 1.72.00WWE
ROM date - 03.15.04
Radio version 1.17.00
Protocol version 1337.28
ExtROM version 1.72.181
Is there anything I can upgrade it too? Or worth doing?
"However I beleive my xda is locked as when I try to put in my 3 sim card"
recall 3 blocking their very simcards to be able to work in no 3g phones
so it's likely that it's not your phone which is locked
you can upgrade it to wm5 if you like
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Windows_Mobile_5
Ah I see now, thank you.
I will just get another sim no problem.
I am interested in going up to wm5 but have a few more questions.
I see there are many different ROM versions, any particular one to go for? Will I still be able to use the camera & phone part? And also is there anyway to keep the ROM I have now and restore if anything nasty happens?

I have a himalaya just like yours, I've upgrade to a lot of ROMs here in the forum, and currently, I decided to go to helmi AKU3.5 SP2. But this ROM lacks of software you will be needing most. But as helmi said, you can install softwares as you like, and i bet this is really fast. You can also try C_Shekhar's Rom, it has softwares built on it. But helmi's ROM is faster. you can also adjust your 15mb storage to 30mb storage so you can install more software you like. Unlike WM2003, it uses RAMdisk for the installation of your softwares and it uses 128mb. At first you will be having hard time to understand the flow, but you of course you can learn from it.
Nweiz, what country are you from?
Okay so all I got to do is install this rom, and go searching for the software to pwoer the phone, camera, etc?
Is there anyway to backup / restore my current ROM and all the other parts I should need incase the worst happens?
I only just got this and I really dont want to break it because I have wanted one for ages
"phone, camera"
is a part of the rom
Brilliant! Looks like things should be alot easier than I thought.
Still playing around, I found my bootloader version is 1.03, does this matter much?
And I have found some backup tools by searching through the wiki pages, but they dont seem to work for my smart phone?
http://en.pdamobiz.com/en/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=62
Big help! Thanks!
Okay looks like im all set, back this up. Download the rom, install.
Hopefully all should go as planned.
Just one small little off topic thing, I noticed the problem with my sound is that when its in the cradle, all sounds work. However when it is out the cradle, sounds are intermittant. Software or hardware fault would anyone say?
Okay upgrade went without a problem and its now running fine.
However the only problem I noticed is that it does not detect the backup battery, im guessing this means the battery needs replacing?
I literally just noticed a problem with the charge socket too, looks like the pins on the right are slightly bent yet it still fits and charges.
Could this explain the sound issues? As when its in the cradle and on charge it works fine.

man, i think its bcoz wm5 is designed for not using the back up battery. Bcoz wm5 uses storage for installation of your application (default), and even if the battery drains, it will not hard reset. i guess.

Clockwork like problems with Services.exe

Recently my HD has developed an annoying little fault. I'v done a search and a few people had this fault but there were no real replys.
After i power on my HD or do a soft reset, within 15 minutes without fail, services.exe will crash. No matter what i do with the phone, even if i switch it on and let it idle.
I'v removed just about every program on the phone and been through HD tweak and no joy...
The crash doesn't seem to affect how the phone runs, i just wanted to see if there was a known solution i'd missed or at least know if i should be worrying about this process crash if it performs a useful function to the phone.
Many thanks guys!
Have you tried hardresetting your phone? To me it seems that you have installed something that runs as a service and that software crashes. Also you may try to remember when the crashes began and uninstall anything that could be responsible for them.

I wanted to try to avoid hard resetting. I have un-installed just about every program on there, certainly anything that could cause this that i can think of.
Ok i just did a hard reset, within 5 minutes of the phone being on services.exe crashed again. This is without the storage card in as well...
I have the same problem on my Orange HTC Touch HD from day one (11/05/09) and so fair been unable to find any info on it in connection to Windows Mobile platform. I am already on my second phone, sim card and I only had the contract two weeks. The phone will not run Orange maps as it refuses to complete install on the 1st start. Wish i never got it now to be honest, but what phone to have instead as I hate the iPhone

From browsing on here there are a few people with this issue with services.exe so we are not alone.
I've just done about 4 hard resets trying differeny suggestions from previous threads and nothing worked. Really annoying as surely since im using stock ROM and even after a hard reset it's doing it, it has to mean there is a glitch with the core software.
As for orange maps... my HD from Orange didn't come with any mapping software i i just downloaded a googlemaps cab.
Are U on an orange ROM??
If so try setting date and time to a month earlier after hard reset at setup - just for testing for a day.. Mostly they (orange) have used some trialware software/extension which is expiring of it's free trial and sending the device to Reset. I know some one who flashed a custom ROM later due to this..

Mmm interesting, I am on a stock 1.19.61.1 WWE (11/25/08) Orange ROM yes. If this is true then i guess it gives me a good excuse to flash a cooked ROM. Been toying with the idea...
I take it after your mate flashed a new ROM the problem disappeared?
Yes, but he was not tied to Orange network..
Some ppl have reported connectivity probs with orange with custom ROM and some have not. Your mileage might vary.
If doesn't work you can always go back to Stock Orange ROM.
BTW I heard this is one of the s'kiest ROM
If you want Orange Maps you can have it free for normal version, just make sure you have a data package and just text:
Orange Maps to 247
I am also with Orange device but it is unlocked. However I flashed the ROM on the first day because it is my second HD after an unfortunate incident involving a set of keys thrown at me in the dark an my first HD in my hand... my point is - you should definitely try a new ROM, however I suggest using USPL and flashing an older cooked ROM (not 1.56 based), so you don't have to update the SPL and make reverting back to stock much easier, should you decide to make use of the warranty, because many people here are complaining about HTC returning their devices because of 'illegal firmware'.

As long as the returning isn't involved with lack of screen or input to the screen (touch pad not working) then you are alright? My personal dread would be flashing the phone have it working great for months then something goes wrong only to find out you cannot revert it then you have no come back at all.
Well - with your screen not working you can still flash a new ROM if you know the procedure. There is no touch input involved in the procedure, so you should be fine with it and you can alway claim that you had to hard reset (the phone after flashing will appear like after hard reset - time/date not set etc.) before returning for repair because of the corporate information stored in it.
Still everyone should be aware that flashing the ROM and/or SPL can void the warranty and decide for themselves.
So what is the deal with returns?
I have Orange care insurance on my contract and in the past with other handsets if i've had a problem i've just sent it off and had a new handset the following day by courrier.
If i was to flash a cooked rom and then have the screen smashed. It would be a replacement under insurance, not warranty so i would still be sent a replacement handset and i guess that would be the end of it ?

[Q] HD2 WP7 Auto power off and reset issues

Hi, I am running the DFT WP7 on my HD2. I am finiding the phone randomly turns itself off and also restting itself back to standard which now means i have to re-install everything!!! luckily i have not activated my windows live yet and would like to know if anyone can help me get to the bottom of this before i do. i am using an 8GB Sandisk micro sd card just incase this makes any difference and radio 2.08.50.05 and magldr111. Any advice would be very welcome
You should probably try using the 2.15.50.14 radio. and magldr112 as a first step.
I had reset issues with a 4gb sandisk microsd, but it has been rock solid on an 8gb card (set up for dual booting with Android). However, this morning, I started getting random resets again. The only thing different was that I was using a different battery (cheap ebay battery that works fine in wm6.5 and Android). I put in the original battery and it took 3 attempts to boot, but since then it has been solid again. You may therefore wish to try with a different battery.

Not Your Ordinary FREEZING Issue!

So my HD2 freezes constantly. I don't have the unlock freezing issue nor the black screen freezing issue. My phone will just freeze quite constantly. Doesn't matter if I'm just doing a message, online, or it's just sitting there doing nothing. It will freeze and will have to remove the battery and restart it. I've reinstalled MAGLDR, CWM, and tried several ROMS and it still doesn't make a difference. I remove the battery and have to let it cool for around an hour just to turn it on and be able to use it for a period of time.
Any suggestions out there? Could the battery be bad? The hardware? I constantly use Task Killer and Data Eraser to make sure there aren't unnecessary programs running. I've narrowed my app collection to just the necessary ones that I need. Still doesn't make a difference. Any programs out there that would help with this issue in any way. Would repartitioning my SD card help at all. I have pretty much everything on my SD card as well so the hardware shouldn't be overloaded at all.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
check here
LOADS of people are having this problem including myself.
As long as Mobile Data and Gps are OFF, I have no freezing issues.
BUT, if I turn on Mobile date or Gps, or both, then GAME OVER.....it freezes within seconds.
It's not your battery, or SD card and don't listen to the muppets who repeat themselves by saying "do a task29" coz it doesn't work.
I've tried 5 different SD card, got 2 hd2's, task29, over 100 roms, different radios etc etc.
Never used to happen on SD builds, only Nand.
if i had the cash, i'd smash my hd2 against the wall and get a Android native phone.
this aint ever gonna be solved.

Thanks!

Hi,
It might be worth trying to flash an original ROM and seeing if the same thing occurs in WinMo.
Have you properly formatted card? (overwrite with size adjustment)
Which rom are you using?
Does it do it on multiple roms?
Have you done a task29?
have you tried a different radio version?

I've tried all those things. I'm using the Nexus 2 Gingerbread ROM by tytung. I've tried winmo roms, android, etc. I've done task 29 several times. Different radios as well. It doesn't make a difference at all. I found a thread that might be the culmination of it all. If anyone else is having problems like I am, take a look at this thread. It's definitely the motherboard overheating and freezing/and or shutting itself off.

Luckily, I pay insurance through t-mobile so I will be picking up a new HD2 pretty soon.
I had a similar problem, but mine came about under different circumstances. I smashed my HD2 against a wall for whatever personal reasons that you shouldn't care about, anyway, so I ordered a replacement display. When I installed the display the phone would freeze just as described by OP. I found that disabling GPS and WiFi allowed me to use it for a longer time, but if I ever so much as applied any pressure to the display (rather than just lightly touching it) the screen would freeze and sometimes it would just straight shut off until it didn't turn back on at all (this was barely the first day after installation). I opened the phone and tested, found out that the LCD flex cable had a defect to it where if it was bent (the position it's supposed to be in once the phone is assembled) the display would "short out" and with the cable fully extended no problems would be present, even after applying pressure to the display or any of the other internal components.
I'm sending my LCD back for a replacement and hopefully the new one will work fine. I've read that some LCD's cause the HD2 to freeze and I think I was unlucky enough to receive one such. I need the phone to hold on long enough until I get my contract renewal May 2012. I'm surviving on my Dream right now and I'm going through Angry Birds withdrawal...

I have similar issue. Could use advice. Please.
My HD2 is about a year old. Decided to try android on the sd.
Device: HTC HD2 TMOUSA
Radio: 2.10.50.26 (Original) NOW flashed to 2.15.50.14
SPL: 2.10.xxxx (Original) NOW HSLP 2.08.0000
Android Rom: SD AmeriCanAndroid AOSP HD2 GB234 CM71
WM Rom: 2.13.531.1 (Original)
ACA seemed ok but would freeze randomly. So I flashed the radio to the 50.14. Seemed a little better but still a few freezes in android. Thought I would try the partition to improve the sd card performance. can't tell if it helped or not to many freeze ups to use android during the day. NOW my winmo side it giving me random reboots. It gets hot reboots, especially bad if using gps. I know overheating is part of the issue because during the middle of the day in my car without A/C it is terrible.
I also have an OTTERBOX Defend which has kept the phone looking great but is a really pain with on all the battery removal with the freeze ups.
I have read that this can be a mainboard issue, but how can I tell if it is or not?
Could the radio and winmo rom be incompatible?
Should I flash the winmo rom to a more compatible android rom?
Should I send it in since I have TMO insurance? (Anyone know if there is a deductible if you didn't lose the phone?)
I have also noticed the on the winmo side it reboots less if I turn htc sense off.
Not sure if I should go back to a different radio or send it in?
Are the insurance replacements refurbished or new? do they have the same issue?
Thanks for any expertise you care to share.
Had similar problems with Tmous HD2. Problems were really bad in Winmo; aca worked somewhat better. Read forums, tried standard "solutions". With time the problems got to the point where the HD2 would not boot unless it had been placed in the refrigerator for 5 minutes.
Did T-Mobile warranty exchange in April. Replacement was refurb (arrives without battery or sd card, used old one), but looked fine. Had a week to test "new" phone, before sending the old one back. Replacment phone works much better. In Winmo, gps, videos, sense no longer cause reboots; aca also works great.
Hope this helps...
