Same here with HTC Youtube on my Sprint Vogue. It's first screen is really nice, shows neat little summaries. But when one is selected to play, ugh! First of all, the player goes left handed on me, sort of upside down. And the aspect ratio of the area for video is rediculously w-i-d-e screen. Worst of all, it just freezes, curable only via soft reset.
So, my use of HTC Youtube is only to pick out a video. Next, I open up youtubeplay, enter keywords from HYt, and then download the FLV file rather than viewing it. Once D/L'd, I use TCPMP to play it nice and smooth, sync'd too.
Youtubeplay is available here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385227&highlight=youtubeplay
And TCPMP here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=380387&highlight=TCPMP

Works perfect for me. First install the app, then the ravest fix.

I've found that the least troublesome way to use flash is to use Skyfire (mobile browser), plays pretty much any flash file inside the browser. It's also free.

You can also fire up Opera Mobile Ver 9.5 or higher and simply install the You Tube Widget.

YouTube video - what's the best solution?

When I go to www.youtube.com in Pocket IE, it automatically re-directs to "m.youtube.com". So far so good - everything comes up including the thumbnails. Click on any thumb and you get the expected screen including "Watch Video". BUT ... clicking on that produces an error screen that says "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe. Do you wish to continue?"
Clicking YES only results is a "rtsp ... 3gp" file can NOT be opened.
So, how did this guy back on June 18, 2007 do it on the Touch as shown in this video ??

I thought that the Sprint Touch supports 3GPP streaming out-of-the-box ?
streaming media
You need a program called HTC streaming media. Just Google it.
Streaming YouTube on WM6 (Touch included I'd assume)

HTH....my 2 cents
second for VTAp. Has videos from all google videos, youtube, and a few other places. Its like connected so its updated the same rate the sites are updated as well. Its just overall great!
i think it s!
is any1 having trouble? i did the ytpocket and when visit youtube on PIE my phone pretty much freezes up...
vTap works great ... thanks for the input !!
vtap is the best that is what im using. works like a charm.
i tried vTap and its okay, but the thing that pisses me off are the load times and the ****ty quality. so i went with typocket.com, they have 2 easy installs that take less than a minute, with GREAT FULL SCREEN quality and super fast load times, almost seems like its streaming
so give ytpocket.com
I've got ytpocket and tcpmp installed. Some reason all videos are very choppy, sound is clean but video looks like its refreshing slowly (like if you don't have the proper video card drivers installed on your pc thats how it looks) Its not buffering or anything.
Are there any tweaks I have to apply to get better video frame rate?

Thank you
Another good option
I have used vTap and I though it was very good, although I had to put up with a lot of wait icons.
I have been experimenting with this option... http://www.avotmedia.com/ and it has been quite usable so far. Video is very smooth and I have not had one single wait icon while using this program.
Check it out. I originally heard about here or PPCG, one of the two.
I use this

How to watch YouTube Videos!

Did you know that there is an easy way to stream youtube videos from PIE (Pocket Internet Explorer) using TCPMP? You just click the video and a menu pops up so you can choose if you want to watch or download the video, works just like on your pc.
Check it out here: http://discussion.treocentral.com/showpost.php?p=1319431&postcount=1
By the way, it is very important to download the FlashVideoBundle.CAB provided on the site. I used another version and it didnt start any videos, only timed out after a while. Then I downloaded FlashVideoBundle.CAB from site and it worked like a charm.
You would also need to install the FLV plug in for TCPMP if you dont already have it, you can download it from this site: http://tcpmp-plugin-for-flash-video.softonic.de/windowsmobile
Remember to use Internet Explorer, it will not work in Opera!
Good Luck!
I know this Youtube plugin for PIE with TCPMP 0.72 from Hermes.
Does play google video and others too.
Working great, if not working after some time Youtube changed something on their site and you'll have to install the updated plugin. Newest version is 1.44 by now.

Vtap picture resoultion is not as good. Also the selection of video is not as wide, I think. Is this what you have found out too?
vTap is probably better suitable for smaller devices with less power!

I have been spending the last hour or so testing out vTap and here is what I have found.
1. The Video quality is poor compared to the direct streaming solution with TCPMP.
2. I am unable to find any way to download videos, which I think is a great disadvantage!
3. Not all videos that shows up in the search query works!
However, vTap is defenetley a very fast and usable program. It performs very quick searches and the conversions are quick! I also like the wikipedia function.
I think however that this program is better suitable for devices with smaller screens and less cpu power, I will test and see how it performs on my "HTC Touch" before I can say that for sure tough, I will let you guys know as soon as I can!
But as far as viewing and downloading videos on my "Athena" goes I think I will stick to the first method that I mentioned!
Branko, I'm not sure why this keeps happening, but I would go a minute or two into the clip and it will just freeze. I saw this posted on another thread. So I came here, downloaded the version you linked to....yet the same thing. Is there a setting I need to change or something?
I have the two files in TCPMP, I dowload the latest version Flashbundlepackage, and I'm using IE to play the clip.
I will go to google full, select the first video just to test, and will pull up TCPMP but after a minute.....FREEZE.
thanks for the links though!!!

If the video starts without a problem and then freezes after a while then it cant be a problem with the codec, dont quote me on that tough.
What I would check if I was you is if the video freezes even if you download it to the device and play from there, if it doesnt freeze when playing from device it´s probably a slow connection or problem with youtubes site for the moment. (Happens alot!)
If it freezes even when you have downloaded it, I would try to reinstall the TCPMP and all the codecs!
Please tell me how it goes!!

Ok, so I have been playing with vTap on my little "HTC Touch" now for a few hours, and I can confirm that the program INDEED is better suitable for small screen devices with less CPU power!
Anyway thats my opinion, it´s for everyone to decide for them selfs what they want to use in the end!
So let´s hear it guys, what is your prefered method on Athena?
Thanks Branko,
After I reinstalled all of the codecs, it continued to freeze. So tried to adjust some of the settings, still to no avail. Then i noticed that I want to view it in "fullscreen". So I decided to to let it play with out "fullscreen". Behold, the problem was fixed.
Literally, if i keep it in the un-fullscreen mode (not sure what its called) it plays just fine. Its one of those things I wouldnt have figured out at all.
So there we go, atleast a fix on my end, is to watch all of the playable clips in the un-fullscreen mode and it will play just fine. I assume that if the file is small enough, I can download and play in fullscreen mode.
Thanks alot for your help Branko
You should be able to play in full screen mode too!

What do you use to play Youtube videos?
Is there any more programs or ways to play videos from "youtube" and other sites? Please share!
I have just voted and then read the thread - I am the only one who has voted for vTap!
I must admit, I am only an occasional user of youtube and love vTap's simplicity (and the wikipedia search) and for my usage it works fine, especially given the complexity of the alternatives.
Different people want different things - I want something simple (like me).
Good luck in finding your ideal solution!

Guys,
Technology for youtube on Athena has already moved on beyond recognition recently. I don't use TCPMP anymore.
You could use youtubeplayer from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385227
Youtubeplayer 1.0.7 lets you download and save the files.
Or Coreplayer, the latest version 1.2.4 lets you watch but not to save it yet. Of course, it can aso play flv files previously saved.
If you're not using realVGA or only using 192dpi, both the above user interface are very nice. If you're using 96dpi, then coreplayer's interface is the most beautiful.
If you want to do a little more indepth research to understand why coreplayer is one of the best way to go at the moment, read this "youtube bible":

Thanks

Xfire live videos

It's not another post about if it's possible to have xfire messenger on wm but this: http://www.xfire.com/live_video/
I don't know if I'm the only one but I never been able to have flash active x working on my uni, nor ie, nor opera.
Actually even the application to play youtube movies on the uni don't work for me, but I guess it should.
So, is there a way to make a web browser play flash things, or edit some lines in the youtube application to play thoses movies, or something else to make it work ?
So far the only way I found is to use remote desktop, which give 0,8fps and a very low quality sound.

Try using skyfire... just google or search over here, it's a freeware and plays flash videos flawlessly...
Thanks a lot, since I tryed netfront which wasn't able to play this, I though it would be the same for all browsers.
Though, I can't put movies into full screen, nor with the virtual cursor of skyfire, nor with fakecursor (my touch screen is dead), are you able to ?

well it doesn't support fullscreen,,,, but i mostly use zoom button to make it somewhat around the display size and focus on that part only... you can hide the top and bottom bar ... somewhat like full screen.... the only browser that supported fullscreen playback was mach5... which is not a freeware...

iplayer downloads?? Can't get them to work.

Sorry for the noobish question but my problem is as follows....
I know the BBC Iplayer site states the HD2 is not compatable and either way I thought I'd put some downloaded programmes on my phone to watch.
So I downloaded them as 'portable device download' from the iplayer site to my PC and then tried to drop them onto the card to watch. They're WMV files. But I get an error message stating "the device has either stopped responding or has been disconected".....not sure what I'm doing wrong and would be glad of some advice. All I'm trying to do is copy and paste them over to the phone card.
Anyone?
Can't explain that I'm afraid but I did read a while back that the files need to be synched through Windows Media Player and in the past that the file needs to pass a drm check before it will play - someone wrote even longer back that starting to play the fie on the PC so it checks drm, then moving it worked.
Do you get that message when moving anything else to your sd card?

This is a problem to do with transferring large files rather than the HD2's ability to play the WMV files. Try connecting the HD2 in Disk Drive mode - it worked for me.
You might want to try searching this site for an application called myplayer - it makes accessing iPlayer a lot less painful and allows higher-quality downloads.

TCPMP is more likely to be stable (i.e. not crash or lock up the phone) in GDI or Raw Framebuffer mode. So is CorePlayer, come to that.
If TCPMP is crashing before it even lets get you into the menu, that may be because it's trying to display the opening frame of the video that you previously told it to play, and doing that in DirectDraw mode. You can get around that by temporarily moving or renaming whichever file it's trying to display.
I have myPlayer and Coreplayer.
With myPlayer you get the latest viewable content ... but can search for anything. If you have the iPlayer website open that may be easier to search.
Once you've found what you want, just use myPlayer to download over wireless to your device (you can also stream for instant playback (even over 3g).
myPlayer has a view downloads screen with all the programmes you've downloaded. You select one, say view now ... it launches Coreplayer ... and it plays perfectly.
Never had a problem. This is infact one of the most amazingly together capabilities of the HD2 with this huge screen. In the evening I choose something to watch on the train on the way to the city the next day ... love it.
Paul.

OK. I tried moving the file, but it's still crashing. I'll uninstall it again, later, and delete any settings that are left behind in the registry. And when I get TCPMP working again, I'll give those other modes a go.
Having got iplayer downloads to play on my HD2 having put them on the sd card I'm now having some playback problems.
Basically the quality of the picture and the sound is fine in principal but upon playback on WMP the programme pauses or sticks every second or so. The pause is only for a fraction of a second, just enough for the picture to momentarily catch or stick before continuing. I could live with this but at the same time the sound is also distorted making programmes unwatchable. If downloaded to my PC the same programmes are fine, it's not the download itself it's just once on the phone thats the problem.
Tried various programmes, all the same. Tried downloading direct from iplayer site to the card, still occurs.
Could this be a card problem. It's a sandisk 8Gb SDHC card. Any ideas?
I configured Opera to try direct streaming from iPlayer ... and it worked fine althought he picture was a little pixelated.
I know CorePlayer is a cost ... but if iPlayer is important to you, the combination of myPlayer and Coreplayer for iPlayer (and other channels) is incredibly simply ... live streaming is better quality ... and the download manager is completely seemless. Quality of downloaded video is genuinely perfect ... as good as anything at high bit rates I have on my Archos AV5100.
All I can say is that if you can stretch to Coreplayer ... I'd go with myPlayer.
Going through the website for either streaming or download (even on a PC) is so much more clunky.
Paul.

I haven't tried this on an HD2, but on my TP2 you can quite good results from myplayer without having to buy CorePlayer; I use Streaming Media Player for streaming, and TCPMP to play the .mov downloads.

(Maybe not) Better Flash

I searched around, but it doesn't look like this has been directly addressed on xda.
Archos 101IT-16 2.2.1 .71
I have tried the flash you can download from the market and the droid x version and they bih sucked in their own wonderful ways.
Just for kicks i thought I would sideload the version I could download with my nexus and it works much better than the other two. 10.1. 105.7
No root on either, went to market on nexus, dl flash, i have app installed that auto moves to sd, used astro to back it up, renamed it from pkg.apk to flash... and emailed it to myself, installed directly from email.
I don't do much that uses flash so tested what I could find. Youtube was smooth and a game off the flash demo site worked.
If you have a good site to test it on, leave a link and I will let you know how it works.
Any chance of loading it on here so we can test it on our 101's ??

+1
You can test this site.
http://waterlife.nfb.ca/
That's a pretty intense site. it works, but much choppier than my computer which still had some trouble keeping up.
The biggest problem I saw is on the computer, the rotations tried to follow the mouse. on the tablet, it seemed to think there was a bunch of input where there was none. (flicking back and forth and all around). Probably doesn't work well on other touch screen devices either.
What's a common site that uses flash?
When you say smooth on youtube, is it immediately smooth? the flash I have on mine goes smooth if you give it about 5 seconds. I cant interact with flash videos though. "Sometimes" I manage to fastfoward. Of course full screen doesn't work, volume doesnt work,. Etc...
Mine is smooth right away, full screen works .. I just picked a random video (imagine no toilets) I expected a parody on imagine, but I was able to move the selector anywhere in the downloaded stream smoothly. when i went ahead too far, it glitched while it built a new buffer, but so does my laptop.
just tried another one and if the spool is not finished, it seems to restart the stream from my new point, but it's pretty quick. I am also using HQ mode. hmm that seems like an error with the spool bar as I can easily move back and forth between the known downloaded points.
For anyone who wants it, here you go!
I tried it out on my 101 and it works good for the lower quality videos. It still skips and freezes on the HQ stuff. (This is of course using the browser and not the youtube app)
I tried the apk from my N1 also (same version as OP) without success. I tried a youtube vid from archosfans and it was very jumpy. I then tried a video from NFL.com with worse results.
I got a video at MetaCafe to work which is a first. Break.com was a fail as was most every other site I used.
So, it appears this is a bit better as I could not get any to work using the droidx version. I hope Archos gives us a decent one soon...

Heres the flash i use for my 101 , it plays Youtube in full screen and on HQ no problem , web page flash is sometimes a bit jerky , but in general the best i have found . Cant remember the exact source , so credit to the person i received it from .
can you post a link of a HQ youtube video that plays smoothly?
For me nothing is played smooth except the mobile optimized pixelated videos, this is the same as with the market flash...

Youtube app isn't flash. Only if you go to the desktop Youtube page will it be flash.
Doh,
i swear my youtube didn't work until i reinstalled flash
I'll remove it and see if yt still works
Tried on 101 with dolphin with desktop useragent. Doesn't work. Hangs on youtube will play some flash but very choppy.
So, the youtube app still works well with flash removed after reboot, but you can't use the www website to link to videos.
