Soft-reset without having to take the back cover off the phone - Touch HD General

Here is a tiny program to soft-reset your phone without having to take the back cover off the phone. You access the program from the programs menu (Start--Programs).

@Beards: I added it to the wiki list, but for some reason the table structure of the item following is messed up (the version appears in the comments cell). It was my first time editing the wiki, so let me know if I did something wrong.

The thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=450643
has a soft reset app i wrapped. It has no prompts, and just F.D.I

I have to say this does exactly what we need, no fuss, it just works.
Thanks.

Power button will do also
If the unit has not frozen completely, you can long press the power button and get the dialog box asking about losing data and asking Yes or No to continue.
This is actually the first time I have ever seen a built-in option of actually shutting the entire unit completely off! Just like removing the battery!
I tried this method a few times when it looked like the whole thing locked up (experimenting with old/incompatible apps) and it worked like a charm. I have had to remove the back cover only once to use the reset button.
Regards,
Gordo

Yes, this is the method I use and it is very convenient. Even when my screen freeze or the unit seems to hang, holding the button will still allow me to shut down. Hold again to restart.

Phone Lock Program

So I have been looking around the internet and on this site, and I found a few programs that lock the phone including the two programs created by vijay555 and armstrom but they just don't do what I am looking for. This is what I am looking for:
1) When I press the power button I want my phone go into sleep mode and lock
2a) When I press the power button again I want it to turn the screen back on and advance me to the screen where i just press unlock on the touch screen( not unlock on the soft keys and then to unlock on the touch screen. I would like to skip the soft key press.)
2b) Instead of the need to press the touch screen to unlock it would be great if when I hit the power key to turn back on that it allowed me to press the middle nav button(such as the lock on the palm 700 wm)
Hope someone can help! Thanks alot! I have a Cingular 8525!
well now once you hit the power button to sleep it will only leave the power button active, so you dont have to lock it before you put it to sleep.. also the latest version of battery status has an option that will lock the phone upon wake up.. now i know you are looking for something to lock it prior to sleep and unlock during wake up, but personally i think unlocking during wake up could cause issues if the phone is on your pocket.. you can also still answer calls while the phone is locked
VJDeviceLock locks on power off if required. Advancing to second stage could be done. Making device unlock on pressing enter is possible but semi-complex. I don't know if Matt is still developing, but I could update mine if required.... I'm very busy and pre-occupied, but if enough call for it I'll give it a go.

that would be amazing if you could look into it. I would really appreciate it!
hi, vijay555. does your device lock affect activesync synchronization? the one i tried always give out an error message, so i had to remove the program.
Don't know if it does. If it does anything at all, it should do the same as the normal device lock today screen plugin. Let me know if it does something else.

i have yet to find a device lock that kills activestink on the phone

this one (included in the addon folder), when installed and set up, disrupts synchronization on my phone (xda2s on helmi's 3.2 rom). but i can still explore the phone via activesync.
i will try vijay555's program. thanks.

ok, you are referring to the AS on the pc getting disabled... or let me state that better, when you use that app to lock your phone it halts synch between pc and phone.. thats odd.. i will pull apart that cab and see whats up with it, however im not well versed on versions earlier than WM5.. but in theory it should work the same way.. i will report back
**EDIT**
wait, im an idiot, i dont need to pull it apart to answer your question, dont know why i didnt think of this earlier, when you put your device to sleep it should kill the connection over usb (why your able to browse via AS is still beyond me). i have experienced that on all the WM5 devices i have owned farrady, wizard, hermes...
**2nd EDIT**
That cab is doing exactly that, when you activate the device lock it puts the phone into sleep mode via reg key HKLM/Software/Devicelock and the dword "SuspendAfterCheck". now with that being said there may be a reg key to also disable power save modem on the active sync connection, but im not sure if it exists for earlier versions of WM
thanks, shogunmark. btw, my unit is already on WM5... and i got lost on the 2nd EDIT, lol!

oh, i thought your particular device was wm2003 device, my bad.. that 2nd edit showed a registry setting that suspends the phone when using that app, if you have regedit you can try to play with that setting and see what happens, the HKLM is HK local machine key in the registry.. its currently at a value of 0. from this app, you could try changing it to a 1. but then again that program may overwrite that value each time its ran, but i dont think so, its worth a shot
okay so now that i have played with my phone for a couple of days i know exactly what i want now. I would really like a program that would lock my phone and then shut it off with just the simple press of the power key on the side. I have used both the programs for vijay and the other device lock and they both will lock after device awakens, but I would really like it to lock before then. If that could be possible, i could then use the device lock program to run a program when the phone wakes, i will run vijays button press to press the left soft key and then all i will have to do is press the screen to unlock, thus exactly what i need is taken care of. Hopefully everything is understadable. I am super tired right now, but i have been testing all day and wanted to update the post.
@lance18: i'm not sure if i read correctly, but maybe you could opt to have your unit power off after a certain amount of time, without using the power button
start>settings>settings>power>advanced
@shogunmark: thanks for the idea. i just realized i could have one program run after locking my unit, so i chose activesync. i now have
no more problems synchronizing

Just got my Touch today... already froze it up completely.

How do you perform a hard-reset on the Vogue without actually using the software on the device? Is there a button combination that will hard-reset it because I installed batterystatus and for whatever reason, it is completely locked up and will not even load completely on boot up.
Thanks guys.
EDIT:: Nevermind. I figured it out. Thanks anyways
Hold down the SEND and END keys while inserting your stylus into the Gatesanus (that would be the re-set hole). When the screen comes up just follow the on-screen instructions...
EDIT: Sorry, I missed your edit first time around. But at least I got to say "Gatesanus".

Haha thanks man. Funny by the way. lol
I had the same thing happen to me. It says on battery status home site that if that happens reset like 9-11 times and it will start up. I could not reset so I would pull out the battery, let it load freeze then pull battery again. I did this about 9 times and It finally started with battery status not turned on and I uninstalled without having to do hard reset and lose all info on device. On a side note battery plus is a good program that does run on the vogue.

Password locking issue...

This is weird. My company requires that I have a password on my device. So be it. I want to say that when I upgraded to WM6.1 this issue started, but it might have been there before. Not sure. Anyway, here is the scenario:
1) Phone coming back from a soft-reset/battery removal/etc. Doesn't
matter, as it always does this.
2) The outline of the Password screen pops up, I press top left of outlined
area.
3) Enter password the second that the numbers show up and press unlock.
4) If I don't do it fast enough, the device locks up - HARD!
5) To come back from this, I have to do a soft-reset and perform 2 & 3
fast. If I do, the device works fine. In fact, subsequent password
entries will work fine. Only the very first one after a reboot.
Any ideas on this? I did a little searching and didn't find anything specific to this issue. But then again, my searching sometimes isn't perfect! :-D
Thanks in advance! Cheers...
I've seen something like this, though not as bad.
Try turning off absolutely everything on the Today screen to see if that helps.
When I saw it, I think a program was firing up in the background while the password screen was displayed.

Do you possibly have some other type of startup program running in the background? I had something similar (can't recall now exactly what it was) when I was using a Wizard a couple of years ago. It was like the lock interface kept losing the "focus" after a few seconds. Ultimately I hard reset and started from scratch, but the issue never resurfaced.
In the end I chose to stop the policy enforcement from my company's Exchange server altogether. Not necessarily recommending you do the same, as it's surely frowned upon by all pointy haired bosses in IT. But in the event you'd like to experience the Dark Side of the Force... here ya go.

the position of Reset button is sooo wrong!!!

I love my HD2 but its loaded with windows and it freezes a lot while trying different/new things and it is so annoying to actually open the back cover and reset it from there. I wish there was a better reset option in the phone like holding the powerbutton for 10 seconds would cut off the power to the phone (like laptops)
Does something like this exists for our HD2?
Install one of those "Reset" programs that is just a glorifed button, then map it to a long press of the End Key. That's what I do. Although I don't know if it works if the phone completely freezes....yet.
Someone actually drilled a hole in the battery cover to get to the reset button. I don't know if you want to do that, though.
The only reason I can think of (as to why HTC put the reset button there) is that the phone doesn't have/use a stylus. Because of this, one would still need access to a small, pointy object to press the reset hole. It actually seems easier to just pull the battery than look for a pen-like object to press the reset button.

No, if the phone completely freezes, like in an SOD, you have to pull the battery or press the reset button under the battery cover.
Pull the battery - much easier and so much quicker than trying to use the red reset button. For a software approach try HD2Tweak it works well, or else one of the new extended action screens, eg Johcos that has a soft reset built in
i totally agree that its soooooo damn annoying! in the touch pro it was really accessible!
pulling out the battery is not healthy for the device, but sometimes a life saver!
I am the one who actually drilled a hole into the Battery Case to access the Reset Button without removing the Battery Case back. It works and saves time and possible problems with constantly removing the battery. The battery pins (3 of them) are somewhat fragile and can be bent or damaged and then no phone.
I have my HD2 in a case so the hole is not shown.
There are times that your phone freezes and you cannot Reset with the Reset App or holding down the Power Off (Red) switch.
No big problem with one little hole. LOL
I would suggest taking the time to find a pen or something to press the button, too many times ive read something about bent battery pins and repeatedly yanking the battery is only putting undue stress on what seems to be a slightly flimsy part of the phone........ just my opinion though........
Thanks for the flimsy batteries warning, I'm from the school of "yank your battery out", and I'll make sure I do it with (even more) tender, loving care in future

Hi,
I was having the same issue when it came to using the "soft reset" button, especially since I try to reset it daily. The battery cover isn't the easiest cover I've encountered to remove either.
Well, let me share my solution. I installed SKTools, which I find to be a great tool, even with the trial limitation of 6 items at a time. It lets you out a "soft reset" icon in your "start" page. And you can choose between to options, one with a question to confirm using it and one without. I'm new to this forum so don't kmow the rules yet about posting links, but it's easy to find SK Tools site just by googling it. Make sure you install the touchscreen version.
Hope this helps you as much as it has me!
Good luck,
Lexie
good point conan.
and installing any app won't help. why would one want to reset??? COZ IT'S FROZEN AND DOESN'T RESPOND! even long press on End key doesn't work. those who are suggesting such a solution, should tell us how they would press that soft butoon with a frozen/dead screen??!!
i can't believe microsoft has managed to mess up even a mobile o.s. like this!!
Why dont you just hold the power button for ten seconds and select power off from the menu ,then power button back on again will give you a soft reset.....
Cheers Ken

There are times that if the phone freezes the Power Button and all buttons do NOT work. Been there done that. That is why I drilled a hole in the battery case so I don't have to remove the battery case and have access to the Reset Button. I no use Android and very rarely have any freezes. I also use SKTools (full version) and no app works if you are frozen.

[Q] HTC HD2 Secret Codes & Reset Method Needed

Tried to use the search function, but got nothing, so make a new thread.
1. need to check my phone's sim lock status. I don't have a sim from other carriers in hand. Thinking maybe there are some 'Secret Codes' like (*#06#, *#*#4636#*#*), to check my phone's sim lock status.
2. Is there any way to reset the phone without opening the back cover? I know we can reset the phone by removing the battery or pushing the reset button...
But....... I am using a TPU phone case, if i need to open the back metal cover, I will need to take off the TPU cover first. As you konw, that TPU thing is really too fit too tight to be removed (using my phone a lot to play games, it dies occasionally)
Thanks!

can't suggest anything for question 1, maybe someone else will come along and provide some answers.
regarding question 2, the following works sometimes on the android build i am using currently (XxXPachaXxX's GBLeo Sense, details in signature):
1. when you feel like rebooting, hold down both volume buttons
2. keep holding down both the volume buttons
3. tap the power button and keep holding the volume buttons
4. this key combination is used for a hard-reset i believe. so in case the phone reboots into the hard-reset screen, just cancel out of it and let the phone reboot normally!
i currently have another HD2 (a friend's) that has WM6.5 on it (some version of NRGZ's Energy ROM Series). i just tried the above process on it 3-4 times but it did NOT work.
it might not work on other android builds either. but i know for a FACT that it works on the one i have currently...i do it almost every day! the ROM suffers from a problem in which the screen refuses to wake up (but the device keeps running because it rings, you can't see who is calling, and you can answer it, and have a full conversation!). this happens randomly about once every 1-2 days. and the above mentioned trick works every single time for me when my device is in that particular state.
so to summarize, the trick doesn't seem to work on WM6.5. it might work in some/all android builds. it might only work on android when the device is in some kind of "stuck" state.
Your reset method works. Thanks! I don't have to take off the TPU case just for a simple reset now.
The combination will lead to the hard reset screen as you described, and can be cancel by simply pressing the 'back' key.
Running the HyperDroid android rom, have no chance to test wm6.5 yet. But now it works. Thanks!!
