Looking for Options for Mobile Data in US - Networking

Hi,
I was a very happy user of ATT MediaNet service for the last 8 months until today.
I added the service as needed via a ATT Pay as You Go service, it worked well and was good value for the money at $19.95 for 30 days.
I travel every other month to US and like the service with my HTC Shift.
Today, I went online to add the service, I could not add any services to add online, called ATT, they were closed and called a backup number and was transferred to Pay as You Go team.
They advised me that service was discontinued Nov 8/08, agent advised it was temporary. Asked to speak to agent supervisor, she claimed service is no longer available. Who know what the real situation is, in Canada I expect this crappy customer service from wireless carriers, ATT experience up to now has been good.
My question relates to what other options do travelers to US have for non roaming data services that can be paid on a as needed basis?
I did a quick check on TMobile site, I could not find any services that match with prepaid.
I hope this post alerts other who were using the MediaNet service that it is not an option anymore or someone else has better info than ATT as to the future of the service.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

KSE True Fax -- Fax Send/Receive in the USA

Is there anyone in the US that has successfully sent or received faxes on T-Mobile USA? If so, can you give me some information on what you did/what T-Mobile did for you?
I've read the other posts, and they indicate the fax features are provider dependent and, in the case of receiving faxes, you actually need a second, dedicated number.
Cingular's stance might be interesting, other than the fact that I'm in the T-Mobile contract for another 4 months... <G>.
Thanks.
I tried to use this software before. The TMobile tech guy told me I would need to add CSD service to my account for another $9.99/month. I was not interested so I didn't pursue it further. I read somewhere that if you're lucky you don't have to get a different number. Otherwise to get CSD service, they might have to give you a different number. Don't know if it is true.

Data 5 = no calls for me :o(

Thank you for contacting O2 Customer Service.
I am sorry for any inconvenience that may have been caused.
As you are on the O2 Data only tariff, you will not be able to make and receive voice calls.
You need to contact the shop, where you were informed that you would be able to make and receive calls on this tariff. They will help you further.
If you need further information about this matter, please reply to this email.

Just got the above response from 02 after my second email.
I went into the shop in the first place and the guy just told me to get in touch with customer services. I cant complain too loudly because I want to keep the exec and so cant threaten to cancel as I dont want to, but I would like voice calls.
Any ideas ?
Does anyone have a solution to get O2 to let me have voice calls on this tarrif ?
someone said they had got the voice on a payg type rate on top if this tariff. i wonder if they're being sneaky since you (we) got our execs cheap?
jus leave the sim in a drawer, its really no use, u only got it for the phone anyway
i got 5 of them, im looking to pay them off when my trade-in cheques come through, then just pay off remaining line rental and be done with it.
When I got the deal they asked me whether I wanted voice enabled on the sim. I said 'as long as it doesn't cost anything'. Not tried it (using my other o2 contract SIM) but assume it does work.
Yeah may just bin the sim. Is there no chance I could change it to a £9 ish voice plan in 6 months time ?
the data tarriff is 'data only' but you can get voice calls on it.
it will be charged at basically 25p per min at alll times. you need to get in touch with cust serv to activate it. the sales advisor told me this and also a little section on my first bill said the same.
i too tokk this offer but i have an orange contract anyway and got this deal purely as an investment as i already have an exec!!
i would do what the others have done... put the sim in a drawer and forget about it for 11 months then reing cust serv to terminate contract and pay jjust the £9.40 a month!!!!
cheers

Thats the thing though, customer services are saying I cant have voice calls on the data5 plan as per their reply quoted in my original post. Why let some have it on and tell others no ?
all customer service depts. employ an EU regulated quota of imbecilic monkeys. just keep trying...one will be able to read eventually.
As mentioned elsewhere I had to move to the Data36 tariff before I could have voice calls activated. If you go from a voice tariff to Data5 you might find you do have both!
If they dont want to switch them on thats up to them. I aint all that bothered. I just emailed them and said thats fine I will use my voda sim I only wanted the phone anyhow.
Hey Guys. I have the same problem. It says on 02's website http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/mobileweb/tariffs/ that voice calls can be made. I ended up speaking to someone at customer services for 25 mins just getting annoyed because even though I pointed this out to them they were still not accepting this. I mentioned False Advertising on their website and as such I should in the next few days be able to make voice calls. So whoever you speak to, just point them to the address above and they should allow voice calls.
Good Luck to all

Well voice calls can be made as well as received on data tariffs. However, there is a slight glitch. There are two basic tariffs - One that allows calls and the other that doesn't.
You cannot make calls unless you shift to the one that allows voice calls. You will have better luck getting this done if you talk to the Business customer services.
So neither is false. You can make calls as the website says. However, you need to purchase the right tariff. The one you can make calls with is called the o2 data centric.
Next time you call CS ask to speak to the Business CS (they will either direct your call or give you a number to call). Ask them to change your tariff to o2 Data Centric. That should solve your problems.
The CS at o2 is crap and just too arrogant. They have no knowledge about things and no manners at all. So much for - "Welcome to the o2 UK based Customer Service centre". Even 3 CS is a lot better.
Yes, you can also change to a complete voice tariff after 6 months if you so desire but it has to be from one of the then prevelant voice tariffs. I think there is none for £9 even today. Minimum i guess is £19.
Good luck with getting your tariffs changed. Hopefully, this information comes useful. Please leave feedback for the benefits of others.

Have now sent a copy of this to the person who was dealing with me via email. Cant see how they can refuse to do it now. Will let you know how I get on.
hello
i can make voice calls and i am on data 5 centric, good thing is that for me it costs the same £9.40 per month inc VAT, the slaes guy that i bought the phone from must have activated for me whilst i was quizzing him about it!
so if u switch to data 5 centric it shouldn't cost you extrra at all, because all that will happen is your call charegs are at 25p per min all time ie the PAYG rate.
thanks
has anybody been able to change from data 5 to data 5 centric via CS then? I might give this a go if I have the time over the next few days....
No, it is not possible to transfer from data 5 to data 5 centric. I tried this and didn't get anywhere. Eventually i spoke to some advisor who told me i had to go to the shop i bought it from,(within 14 days) and cancel the contract and sign up again (this time with centric). A lot of hassle but definitely worth it.
Good luck
Euan
Did you talk to the Business Customer services?
The data tariffs are business tariffs and CS don't have a clue about them. (Ofcourse even otherwise they are clueless.) They can do nothing. You need to talk to business CS. They should be able to help you out.
I work in o2 business customer service and have just read this thread wondering what all the bull**** replies you've had from o2.
To clarify, you CAN move from 'Data 5 Data Only' to 'Data 5 Data Centric'
I would do this for you but it is not allowed for me to just change accounts without completing a security check.
like mentioned earlier, just explain to business customer service that the people in personal c/s dont know what they're talking about and you need moving to data centric.

Thnx JP, tht'll solve problems for a lot many users.

Warning For Att Customers

I have the x7500 and before that the hw6515 both of the phones were using the medianet plan ($20) i could go on the internet check pop3 email and use my slingbox, but no more i can only go on the internet. i talked with an att rep and he said that at&t is doing this deliberately if you care to listen i have the whole thing recorded. ...... please share this with anyone who has at&t or who is thinking about switching to at&t
It was only a matter of time before they cracked down on this. Not surprising that you now have this "problem". I'm surprized they didn't force you to get the unlimited plan, be happy they are letting you stay on the medianet plan.
I don't need tobe happy about anything i am going to switch to tmobile soon.
Help! Iphone sims card won't work anymore.
My Iphone sims card stopped working in my Advantage this morning, won't find the network. I've been using this sims card for over threee months now.
I called ATT but CS is clueless. They claim the Iphone sims card does not support third party devices. I said I have been using it this way for several months. I even went into a local ATT store and talked with the manager, he
could not help, again, clueless. What do I ask for, how can I resolve this?
Thanks!
Charles
PS yes, the sims card works in the Iphone just fine.

Can you get the slingplayer to work by switching the port from 5001 to something else?

No SE X1 in ATT acct Management!

For those of you using ATT in the US. I went to my acct management to mess around with my plans when I discovered that my default device had been switched to a moto Q. I chose the "this is not my device" option but the Xperia is not on the list.
Are there any workarounds. The reason this is important is that I am unable to change my data plan, plus a lot of features and options that used to show up when I had my Fuze are gone.

Could you please elaborate. There is no HTC kovsky in the list of possible devices. The only HTC item is "Fuze black".
I had the same problem. I called AT&T to give them my imei number and to change my data plan and The lady kept insisting that I was using a Motorola Q. I insisted that I was not and that I was holding my x1 in my hand. She said she did an imei search and that I was wrong and kept insisting my phone was a Q! I finally just hung up. My phone under my acct. management page stills shows as a Q.
if att does not sell the xperia, i don't think that they would have it on their devices list.
Isn't that a good thing that you can go for the cheaper $15 unlimited data plan?
Couldn't u just pop ur sim in an old regular phone, change the plan and then pop the sim back into the xperia?
did you get a 3g sim card for your x1? thats what the lady told me to do because i initially wasnt getting texts nor internet.
for some reason, the lady i talked to was very helpful and was able to change all the settings on my plan - i just explained to her what kind of phone it was, smartphone with hsdpa?, so on and so on
hope this helps
The AT&T phone tool is garbage. Some of the promotional tools insists that the agent ties the IMEI number to the feature in order to add it to your account. It is ridiculous that the IMEI comes up as a different phone as an IMEI supposedly represents the DNA of the phone. Albeit the X1i is not a supported AT&T phone it should not populate as any other phone in their system at all. Maybe this is AT&Ts sly way to squeeze out any users using non-supported handsets. We already know they are capable of taking that route seeing how the iPhone conditions panned out.
AT&T Idiots
You can't call them to get any help. They go only on the IMEI # now, because they send you packets via sms/mms for the specific phone that comes up with that number. This way there is no knowledge needed of how to actually walk someone through settings. Obviously they don' t offer the X1 so they have any sort of support for it. I went through ten minutes of telling some woman it wasn't a razor! I just went to the store and told the guy I have a fuze and I wanted off my Iphone plan. He didn't even look at the phone and that was that.
IMEIs went from having the first 6 as an identfier to the first 8. This means that some IMEI lookup still pick up old phones.
Suppose the only trick if ATT aren't helping is to borrow a phone which can be identified that has similar features and to stick your SIM in it.

What are you trying to do with the AT&T website and within the X1A, what do you want access to?
If you use a lower end phone, you can get your Data plan for only $15 (medianet). Fuze is a smartphone = $30. Either way, you will get 3G and HSDPA.

LOL! I'm not trying to change anything. I'm fine with my plan. I was just curious as to why my phone was being classified as a Moto Q and wondered if anyone else had the same issue.
When I was with T-Mobile, their database would show my phone even if it wasnt offered by T-Mob.

TMobile server blown ?

Seriously WTF is up with T Mobile ?
Trying to open a brand new account comes up with this.
We are currently unable to process your request for service with T-Mobile.
T-Mobile's servers are busy or unreachable.
You can try again later, or you can purchase the unlocked phone without service.
Ordering one contract free obviously goes straight through to the ordering screen.
SORT IT OUT TMO
