Advice on several items please - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

Hey guys and gals. Right, i'm a newbie to all this stuff. Although i have managed to change my t-mobile theme to that of the black HTC theme. I've got a t-mobile mda compact iv and i'm really keen on wanting to expand my knowledge.
I tried to download a couple of games from the t-mobile site, but couldn't quite manage to get them to work. Maybe i didn't save them to the correct place.......
Where and how do i do this.
Also can someone explain to me the 'manilla editor', 'system config', 'total commander' and the best way to get some more themes etc.
Sorry if you've all heard these requests before, but once i get to know my way round a bit more, i won't need to ask such mundane questions.
Thanking you in advance

Well, it's not surprising that newbies ask such "mundane" questions, as most applications really don't explain what they are, and names can be misleading
Perhaps the mods could edit certain obscure application threads so that it's not so opaque?
Anyway, manilla is the name of the touchflo 3d application - hence the manilla editor allows you to change certain functions, tabs, etc.
System config is just that, a nice pretty front end to registry tweaks for the phone.
Total commander is a decent replacement for the native file explorer, and does more too.
Most apps can be installed to internal storage - there are exceptions, especially if they tie closely into the OS (manilla, etc). As it stands though, you've only really got two choices on where to install, try internal storage first, if it doesnt work, try main memory.
Most PPC based applications are installed using a cab file - you copy this to the device, then just run it using file explorer to install. Some are windows installers that will automatically do the copy and run the cab for you.
And thats about it

Thanks very much for your reply. It's starting to make sense now

Further on to that, where is the best place to install the manilla editor, system config to

I'm NEW AND I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS AN ExtRom!!

HI, I've bought a JASJAR few weeks ago and thanks to you I've done many things. Unfortunately, due to my poor experience I guess I'm wasting lot of time in trying understanding things. The most important, is to understand exactly what is ExtRom and why everybody is doing theri own personalized.
THANKS TO ALL!!!
My laymans explanation, others may give a more techy one:
When you hard-reset the operating system and applications that come as standard are stored on a rom and are set back to factory settings. Some network phone provideers (O2, Vodafone, Orange etc) like to customise the phone with extra applications, tweaks and branded screen themes. These are usually loaded straight after the reset.
The main reason you are seeing so many posts about the ext-rom is that some people don't like these added extras (mainly as they seem to make the XDA slower).
The second reason is that the ext-rom can be used to store your own customisations so in the event that you have to hard-reset you can get your XDA back to it's current setup quicker.
It is a bit techy to do as the ext-rom is write protected and hidden.
So basically some are making it visible, write enabling it and adding cab files which are to auto run on a hard-reset.
Lastly, it may be usable as extra storage so watch this space for the best tweaks...
Steve
THANKS
Thanks Stevie. Now I know and I'm ready to learn.
Thanks again
Stefano

(Dumb-ass question again) is there a how-to guide....??

seasons greetings!
have another question thats been bugging me sinse getting my Touch HD. this question is probably the equivalent of potty training...One i know how to do it there's no stopping me....
i've been reading various posts on people changing the fonts on their phone (cab files?) and upgrading the ROM (?) and obviously adding software to their phone to, but i dont get any of it. the thing i dont understand is how you install software that i've seen (is there a specific place on the phone?) add cab files (to where?) and what on earth is a ROM?
the last time i did anything like this was a few years ago to Orange SPV 500 and 550, but it was much easier for me to understand back then as is was all pretty basic. but now? im confused.com
i guess what im looking for is a HOW TO guide that i can follow and understand. can anyone point me in the right direction? or am i going to have to pee and poo all over the living room carpet before i actually hit the toilet???
adios!
I am new as well, but as far as I can help:
A .cab is much like an .exe on your PC, you can put it ANYWHERE you want really. To install, you simply navigate to where you have put it on your phone through the file explorer and run the .cab from there which will install the application.
I don't know anything about Roms I am afraid.
how to
just type "install cab pocketpc" in a google field, i'm sure your find what your looking for in the first five answers. I know it's could be hard to understand but this is a though forum: if you want to learn from the beginning here you got to search a lot and read more. That's what i'vedone or you google for simple words.
PS: Put the cab in your storage card from activesync, open file explorer in ppc, click your cab, choose where to install ( on ppc for everyday use, on storage for big files). Continue to ask but in the right thread. In french : "tous les grands chenes furent des glands". Rom is the "windows" you got in you ppc, it could be arrange , or modify before by someone (adding or suppressing)
NB/ edit: apologize, you can find people like ScarySquirrel How could you have 116 posts without flashing once ?

I guess your'e going to have to "pee and poo all over the living room carpet" as you so eloquently put it. Just read up the forum and use the search, using context clues to figure what you want to do. Around these parts, people aren't very keen on spoon-feeding info to people. Also check out the Blackstone wiki as well. The blackstone is slightly difficult to mod for newbies at this point due to it being so new, but i'm sure in a few months there will be .CAB files for pretty much everything.
Try this wiki page:

CABs are just like setup.exe files on Windows. I suggest you forget about ROMs if you are new for now.

Can themes, icons, clocks etc brick my diamond?

Hi, I'm new here and am amazed to see the visual modifications people have managed on their Diamonds. I have already changed my clock to a transparent one thanks to this forum. However, I'm getting increasingly tempted to change other visual aspects including icons, and knowing about as much about this stuff as the average person knows about rocket science, I'm hoping someone could tell me what I can and can't do in regards to the phone I have.
My rom is version 1.93 and I know nothing else except that I bought it and have used it like a normal phone since. Finding this forum, I'd immediatly spotted a thread regarding theme changes, but it stated explicitly not to do it on a 1.93 rom. So instead I managed to change my clock, by simply downloading a .cab file and installing it (surprisingly easy).
To get to the point, I'd just like to know whether it is safe for me to install icon packs or whatever on my diamond without damaging it. I know themes are out of the question because of my rom, but to my knowledge icons, curtains etc are not themes?
Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.
could anybody please help?
Hi... and welcome to the forum
As far as I know you can't damage your phone when copying/Installing themes, icons, dll's whatever...
It could happen that you will need a hard reset... and in that case you will lose everything you have on your phone (not the External Memory)
And you said you can't use .theme's on a 1.93 ROM... well some you can and some you can't...
Try it...
if it should happen that you cant start TF3D...
you can always delete all _manila files in windows... (your phone)
this way all the original manila files will 'pop up'...
Start reading some of the threads, and find out what other people have done and what they have encountered...
In conclusion... don't be afraid to experiment.. it's the best way to learn
And you can always do a Hard Reset...
Install a backup program on your phone (PPCPimBackup is a good one) and backup all your contacts, sms...
The only way you could damage your phone is when flashing a new ROM...
Well, hope this helps you a bit...
/Nisse
Thank you so much. Guess I can have a play around now.

[REQ] HTC Touch HD Theme Creation

After some searching through the vast amount of information on these forums I'm still at a lose on how to create my own Theme's on my HTC Touch HD.
Do I need to change TouchFlo theme's or Manila themes? It is it a tad confusing to a noobie!
I've discovered things that edit previously made ones but dont really want to do this. I really need to be able to open the files in photoshop, preferably in JPG format in order to change them to my cool designs that I'm sure you'll all love!
I'm a Photoshop designer and think my skills at doing this would be appreciated once I've learnt how to save the files out. I've already got a few ideas on some of the icons/wallpapers/theme's I'm planning on using. If anyone can let me know how to rip the files from my phone that need chaning I'd appreciate it.
I've read that they all end _manila, but I cant seem to find them.

New User - how to make cabs

Hello,
Forgive me if this has been asked before, I've done a search and haven't come up with an answer.
I'm looking to start making my own sliders and icon sets, can anyone point me in the right direction where I might find out how to do this? (i.e. how to make cab files)
Many thanks.

I'm not a developer or WM skin designer/ROM chef, but I think your question is a little like asking "how do I strike the bottle of Champagne exactly right when I build my first ship and launch it?".
In other words the cab file is the end of the process, the final delivery system for installation by multiple users. I would imagine that a good start would be to have created your sliders and icon sets, understanding of course where the files/icons go on the target system, that they all work properly, tested by friends, which systems are supported is known/documented, etc, etc.
Then you want to put these finished and tested files into a cab file for re-use and/or distribution to others. I'm sure there are some good tutorials (Google is your friend) out there on creating Windows Mobile cab files, when you're at that stage.
Also for general development/app questions a more generic XDA forum like this would be a better place to start.

Always remember that search boxes (Google on the outside, forum search in here) are good things to become proficient at - especially if your goal is learning some new skill.

I use WinCE Cab manager, since it seems to be the best out there. It allows you to package files, registry settings, etc., and has an easy wizard for people who don't know how to use the program. It has a 30 day free trial, and after that, it's $99, but it's worth it if you regularly make and modify CAB files.
Otherwise, if you don't want to buy that, Extendir Cabs is alright for basic CAB file needs. It doesn't do all the comprehensive stuff that Wince Cab manager does, and it isn't as easy to use, but it gets the job done.
Personal favorite for me is QuickCab. Requires zero intellect to figure out how to use it.

I second QuickCab. Only rule is that if the cab is registry values only then you need to add a file (even if it's empty) since it's a requirement. If you're just doing registry values then try this: http://www.fuzemobility.com/make-a-customized-cab-for-your-registry-tweaks/
