I'm NEW AND I REALLY DON'T KNOW WHAT IS AN ExtRom!! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

HI, I've bought a JASJAR few weeks ago and thanks to you I've done many things. Unfortunately, due to my poor experience I guess I'm wasting lot of time in trying understanding things. The most important, is to understand exactly what is ExtRom and why everybody is doing theri own personalized.
THANKS TO ALL!!!

My laymans explanation, others may give a more techy one:
When you hard-reset the operating system and applications that come as standard are stored on a rom and are set back to factory settings. Some network phone provideers (O2, Vodafone, Orange etc) like to customise the phone with extra applications, tweaks and branded screen themes. These are usually loaded straight after the reset.
The main reason you are seeing so many posts about the ext-rom is that some people don't like these added extras (mainly as they seem to make the XDA slower).
The second reason is that the ext-rom can be used to store your own customisations so in the event that you have to hard-reset you can get your XDA back to it's current setup quicker.
It is a bit techy to do as the ext-rom is write protected and hidden.
So basically some are making it visible, write enabling it and adding cab files which are to auto run on a hard-reset.
Lastly, it may be usable as extra storage so watch this space for the best tweaks...
Steve

THANKS
Thanks Stevie. Now I know and I'm ready to learn.
Thanks again
Stefano

Newbie M5000 advice/roms/updates/etc

Like a lot of new M5000 users, a lot of the posts on here are quite confusing, so I'll list my queries all in one post.
It seems the M5000 is the HTC Universal, but on the inside of the unit it says 'HTC Innovation'. Is this the same model, and if it is then it's presumably safe to follow the HTC Universal topics?
My M500 had the option to hard-reset, then soft-reset immediately, to save the programs in the extended rom from loading, is there a similar facility for the M5000, and if so, is there a list of the extended rom programs anywhere (like the M500 cab list, that tells you what cab is what program, and what you need to install)?
Again, there seems to be a few roms floating about, but they refer to iMate, etc. Is there a decent upgraded rom for the M5000, or is it safe to flash an Orange M5000 with, say, the iMate rom, for better performance?
Sorry for the questions, but I've trolled the forum a lot in the past 2 days, and things can get a little confusing, without actually giving a definate answer to new M5000 users (trolled it enough to know not the ask about M5000 unlocking )
Thanks in advance.
Geez I had written a lengthy reply but it was eaten by one of those many 'database error' server crash... anyway, I'm a newbie too but i"ll give it a shot:
- Yes your m5000 is a universal.
- Yes hard then soft reset is a valid option to stop all the extra stuff from installing, but you might miss on some performance tweaks and other bits from your operator. Also don't forget to write down your connection settings before you hard reset.
- Using another operator rom on your phone is theoretically possible but AFAIK it has many drawbacks and requires an unlocked phone. See the Modaco forums or buzz's site for more info.
Good luck, and don't forget to share your findings!

Any interesting WM5 Roms?

Hi @ all,
got my Hermes for about two weeks now, and flashed LVSW after 4days
In fact, everything was working fine, for the beginning, but after a while some weird problems appeared (like the phone not waking up, sound stuttering, or slow response although i killed all programs with a task manager) and i switched over to Schap's WM6 GER Rom. This has very interesting features, and does not freeze as often as LVSW did, but its slow too... the VOIP with 1&1 as my Provider doesn't work, and some other minor things will make me switch again very soon.
Actually my question is: Are there any WM5 oms out there, which have been customized? Or are there only WM6 develompents going on?
It seems that there are some major stability issues with some devices running WM6...
greetings

Depends what you're looking for....
Hi Garfield...
You're very brave (or foolish) flashing after only a few days
There are many, many customised ROMs out there for both WM5 and WM6 but many don't leave the developers bench! It really depends what you class as "interesting".
The reason why most of the development now sits with WM6 is that WM5 has really been "done" - there is little more to improve upon except adding applications to a ROM build which is really a bit pointless for many - as everyone has different tastes in application choices. There is nothing more annoying than having valuable space taken up with something you don't use and can't remove! (ie - it's easier to add later than to try and take away at the start) This is why many "vanilla" roms are popular with many people. WM6 also is an ideal developers area as it is still very new - and every single WM6 ROM you use you should still consider a "beta" and so will occasionally have the odd quirk. Most are discussed in their own threads.
My personal advice is rather than seeking "interesting" ROMS, read the wiki and the forums - use the tools provided and do what I do - make your own custom ROMS to your taste based on a vanilla. Pretty much everything you need is here in the forums and it's much more satisfying creating your own NBH than just burning someone elses!
Not to mention the satisfaction of knowing how the guts of your device actually work - just be prepared for the odd late-night unbricking session
If you do decide to go down that route though - don't forget to donate to the guys who write the tools to help keep the developments going!
Hello, thank you for feedback
already thought about playing with a kitchen, when you wrote your reply...
So now, i tried "corePRO Kitchen" and found it very, very easy to use, although i encountered some problems:
Assuming i take a shipped t-mob_ger rom put it into the kitchen, extracted it, and went all the way through the step-by-step-tutorial. Afterwards i flashed it to my Hermes, and it worked. (hehe this is the way it should be, i think ) But the splashimages remained purple (from Shaps WM6 rom).
Then i wanted to do the same with a Faria-WM6-rom, and this time, the phone didn't boot anymore... again the splashscreens remained as they were...
But when i flash the same faria rom without rebuilding it in the corePRO it replaces the splashimages, and boots very fine...
Any idea, why this happens?
Is the corePRO broken? or can you tell me which kitchen you prefer?
Some more and more detailed tutorials on corePRO might also be good... Didn't search the forums yet, will do after sending this post. Only recognized that the corePRO-author's website is not available... (he wrote there should be more tuts...)
greetings

hermes help

new here would like to know if any one could help me find a program to take out the useless programs on my cingular 8525 and if any one knows how to change the splash screens
thanks
Welcome.
Welcome to the forum. There is alot of useful information here. The first thing is to get to know where and how to use the phone from front to back. You should start by reading the wiki. Everything you would ever want to know is there. As for changing things around on your phone, you should learn about it first. Last thing you would want to do is mess up your phone by not knowing and understanding what your doing. When in doubt dont do anything unless your sure of it. Also use the search button, it will be your best friend in time of need.
Welcome on board bubba433.
nyc_medic's advice is good. Particularly as removing pre-packaged applications from your phone is not as straightforward as it sounds as it requires changes to be made to the extended rom - that's quite a learning curve.

Advice on several items please

Hey guys and gals. Right, i'm a newbie to all this stuff. Although i have managed to change my t-mobile theme to that of the black HTC theme. I've got a t-mobile mda compact iv and i'm really keen on wanting to expand my knowledge.
I tried to download a couple of games from the t-mobile site, but couldn't quite manage to get them to work. Maybe i didn't save them to the correct place.......
Where and how do i do this.
Also can someone explain to me the 'manilla editor', 'system config', 'total commander' and the best way to get some more themes etc.
Sorry if you've all heard these requests before, but once i get to know my way round a bit more, i won't need to ask such mundane questions.
Thanking you in advance

Well, it's not surprising that newbies ask such "mundane" questions, as most applications really don't explain what they are, and names can be misleading
Perhaps the mods could edit certain obscure application threads so that it's not so opaque?
Anyway, manilla is the name of the touchflo 3d application - hence the manilla editor allows you to change certain functions, tabs, etc.
System config is just that, a nice pretty front end to registry tweaks for the phone.
Total commander is a decent replacement for the native file explorer, and does more too.
Most apps can be installed to internal storage - there are exceptions, especially if they tie closely into the OS (manilla, etc). As it stands though, you've only really got two choices on where to install, try internal storage first, if it doesnt work, try main memory.
Most PPC based applications are installed using a cab file - you copy this to the device, then just run it using file explorer to install. Some are windows installers that will automatically do the copy and run the cab for you.
And thats about it
Thanks very much for your reply. It's starting to make sense now
Further on to that, where is the best place to install the manilla editor, system config to

Little question for everyone

Hallo everyone
There is a chance to answer simply question: Did change of rom helps me? And How?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=375338
NOTES:
You NEED HardSPL installed before flashing any ROM...
Don't forget to make a backup of all data before trying it out...
1st boot takes long time to complete...
Hard Reset after 1st Boot (when it gets 2 calibration screen) to minimize problems, this is always a must as most problems are do to not doing so...
use compatible Radio depending on what version you download...
3G an H are disabled by default for max battery...
some programs have been tweaked, so if you feel they are slower or got bugs, please report them...

Click to collapse
It did help me !!! much faster navigation, more free ram memory, less useless to me programs !!!!
try a full version if you do not like to spend lots of time configuring the device but if you like everything at your taste go for the naked ones and be prepared to spend lots of time on it.
In english: "Did changing you ROM help you? And if so, how?"
Simple answer: Yes. Changing ROMs always helps, whether it be for speed/looks/customization reasons. Every PDA I get, the first thing I do is change to a few different ROMs till I find one that suits me and my needs/expectations (or as close to).
Since i have a lot of software i love naked(without almost any software) rom so i can customize my own way.
You can also upgrade/downgrade to a different OS(WM6.0,WM6.1,WM6.5) or with different UI...just browse some ROMĀ“s in this sub-forum they are self-explanatory most of the times.
