8525 hardware failure? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I purchased an AT&T 8525 on Ebay a week ago and have been trying to get it working correctly. After spending a few days at work browsing the forums and wiki, I am still having a couple problems to which I am hoping someone can make a suggestion or two:
1) the microSD card is only sporadically working (pqi 2gb)
2) the USB connection to the PC is coming up as a malfunctioning device 90% of the time (disconnecting and reconnecting a few times and it will connect)
I can live without the USB connection, but I need the SD card
The phone came with a vanilla WM6 and SPL-1.40.Olipro.
I have tried the following:
tested for bad blocks with mtty (no problems)
performed a hard reset with mtty
switched ROMs to Schaps WM6 4.31 lite
banged my head against the wall
none of these have seemed to help. I thought the head banging did for awhile, but then my vision cleared.
radio : 1.54.07.00 if anyone thinks that will matter.
Thanks in advance.

Oh, and I have tried reformatting the card. I have also tried a kingston 2gb microSD. The Kingston I tried with both FAT and FAT32 formatting.
Thanks again

1st thing, upgrade your SPL to HARD SPL ver.7 found in the upgrading section. This is a must. Better than the 1.40 SPL. Old version made by olipro, upgrade to 2.10.
2nd, try changing your os. There are plenty to try out. It may be that your os doesnt support your card(?)...
3rd, some sd cards dont't seem to be liked by the hermes......Try another that is recommended ...
Hope this helps... Cheers...

Thanks for the quick reply ultramag.
I forgot to mention in my first post that I had upgraded to HardSPL7. I plan on downgrading to the shipped WM5 to test the different OS once the wiki is back up. I assume that is what you mean by trying a new OS?
At any rate, just letting you know I hadn't disappeared.

If its Hard SPLed then why not try a cooked rom. I can pretty much guarantee that it will run better without the bloat on the stock rom. Also stock roms upgrade everything(this includes the radio) and considering you might not want to do that most, if not all, cooked roms are os only. This means it gives you the flexibility to change your radio if you want or keep what you have. wm6 is better all round than wm5. It has microSDHC support (that means you can use bigger than 2gb card) which wm5 doesn't. Personally I left the stock roms behind ages ago cos the chefs out there are top notch and do a better job of getting your os to REALLY run well.Try wm6 first if you do decide to run a cooked rom as there have been issues with wm6.1, though I do like the PDAViet roms for stability and speed(notably PDAViet wm6.1 build 19900).
Just remember though to read a bit about the rom and see if it does and has what you want. There is no perfect rom and flashing does get addictive....
Cheers....

Update:
I was going to run the latest PDAviet a few days ago, but the file I DLed was corrupted, so I went with the Faria 6.1. It's wicked fast, I'm glad I did.
Unfortunately, I am still having problems with my SD card, even after buying a new one (sandisk 1gb; tiawan, which I guess is not so hot for the 8525).
I have been keeping track of when it work/doesn't work, and maybe this will help diagnose the problem.
Occasionally the SD card will connect (usually after I have shut it off for 2 hours). When it does, it runs fine if all I play on it are mp3s. I have done this for a few hours.
It seems that when I run another program, or reset the device, the card will often disconnect. This still occurs when I have everything shut off (phone, wifi, bluetooth, beam, activesync).
Since it plays mp3's fine, when I can detect it (with both brands of microSD cards), I am thinking it isn't a hardware problem and more of a software one. I'm going to go buy yet another microSD card and see if this fixes it.
Programs I'm running:
Skype
TomTom6 (have yet to get it to run though, due to the microSD issue)

Apparently I can't search a forum. There's a nice long list for microSD problems and a few fixes.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=294324
So, I'll be busy for a few days trying these out. I'll post back with what I find.
Thanks again for your help Ultramag

Dissapearing Mini-SD Storage card

Hi all,
I bought my Vario from T-Mobile with Co-Pilot which came on a 256mb mini-sd card. I then bought a 2GB Mini-sd card to swap into the phone for storage. This card worked for a short while - 1 day then stopped showing in file explorer etc. It also wouldn't show when using a card adapter on the pc whereas it had been working. I sent it back to where I bought it from and received a replacement. This card then did the same, worked fine for a day on both pc and in the phone then stopped being found by both. Could my phone be zapping the cards? I've just retried the original 256mb card and that is failing now too.
Disapearing minSD-card
Hi,
I've got the same, but it is gone since I updated the ROM. Maybe it is worth a try!
Best regards, Sebastian
Hi,
What Rom are you on? I'm on the I-Mate one at the moment, just downloaded the new T-Mobile AKU2 one today. Will try that one later I think. Thanks.
Snoop.
Well I updated the ROM to the new T-Mobile AKU2 one and my storage card now works fine. I formated it as FAT to make sure and so far, all is looking good. It also seems a bit quicker that when I had the I-Mate ROM loaded.
Snoop.
my 1gb card does this quite often too, if i push it in and out 10/15 times it seems to reconise it again, i gave it a good blow out with an airline and it was better for a while
Yeah I tried that too. Didn't work for me. It also wasn't working in the card reader on the pc so I suspected the phone was corrupting the card. Happened to 3 different cards. I was loathed to take it out of the phone for fear of it not working when I put it back in. Had it in and out now and works every time.
Seems to be quite common (might go as far as to say everyone will have this problem at one point or another). I noticed it first, when I pulled out the mini SD to show to a buddy what it looked like. When I put it back, it wouldn't show on my today-screen monitor. I pulled it out, put it back in a lot of times and after a while it came back.
Never ever had this problem with the S100, so this must just be a typical problem for the 9100. I too have a 2gig sandisk.
It could also be a design flaw with mini SD -cards, if you experience the same problem with memory card readers.
-JJ
Me too!
I also had this problem. I had 2 1 gig mini-SD cards, one is now dead and the other started exhibiting the same problems on my Vario. Hopefully the new UK rom I updated it to will have fixed these probs.

Losing connectivity to storage card

I did some searching, but couldn't find a related post, so here goes ...
I have started to have an issue where I lose connectivity to my storage card ... my wizard just simply stops recognizing the card. Ejecting and re-inserting the card has mixed results, but after enough attempts it finally starts recognizing the card again.
It had worked fine for several months and now it is fairly regular problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
Cingular 8125
TopRam 2GB miniSD
My wizard is certainly passed warranty and all the ejecting/inserting can't be a good thing for the phone. Thought I would check with the community before purchasing a different miniSD to determine if the problem lies there.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Greg
I had this problem with the cheap miniSD card I bought, I replaced it for a Sandisk one, and the problem went away.
Have you tried the card in a computer via card reader?
Thanks for the confirmation ... I will pursue a new miniSD.
I ad tried it in a card reader awhile back and it worked fine. Maybe I will try a more exhaustive test to see if I can reproduce.
Thanks again, G
i am having the same problem with my 2gb sandisk. sometimes it doesnt recognize it and i have to eject/reinsert the card again. its a pain in the ass!
i have this problem once every month and it makes me feel like tossing my phone against the wall. just when u break into the phone and like it, everything ****s up.
today, just today, my memory card stops working, nothing will read the card anymore.
brand doesn't mean anything, my card was as 2gb Sandisk.
WOW .. maybe this is more of an issue than I suspected. What could be causing this issue ...
- Obviously it could be a wizard hardware issue, although I would suspect that lots of people would be having the problem.
- Could be a card problem, either lemons or specific brands/sizes
- Could it be ROM related?
- Other possible causes?
Maybe we need to gather some information on those that are having the problem.
My data is as follows:
- Cingular 8125
- TopRam 2GB miniSD
- Submitter 2.24 ROM
ROM Version 2.24.10.1 WWE
Radio Version 02.25.11
Protocol Version 4.1.13.12
ExtROM Version 2.25.11.102
I get this problem with my 2GB Sandisk as well.
It's starting to look like a brand issue isn't it?
I'm not sure about brand, i've looked around and this happens for every brand.
my Rom is a Tmo 2.17
and im usig a 8125 with tmo-rom
i think this is a hardware issue.
I have the same issue. Brand new MDA Vario and cheap 2GB card.
It usually works if I stick the card in the PC card reader then back in the Vario again, but I shouldn't really have to keep doing that.
I'm not sure what the deal is with these MiniSD's, but maybe they're just not ready for prime time. I recently purchased two 2gb Kingstons and one was bad, not being recognized by two computers, two card readers, nor the MDA. The second was received and ditto, same problem. Keep in mind that the first card was okay and has worked without issues.
I then called Newegg, attentive as always, and they agreed to refund the Kingston and take my order for a Transcend, which was $15 cheaper anyway. The Transcend worked fine.
This trouble is odd because Kingston is a major supplier of memory modules, and I've installed their RAM in a number of computers, including this one, with no problems. I'm obviously not the only one who's experienced problems with these tiny MiniSD's, and I suspect maybe they've overdone the size-reduction trend to a point where reliability is jeoporized. Or, perhaps it is just the 2gb modules. I have two Ridata 1gb MiniSD's, the first I bought for the MDA, and they have performed flawlessly.
My 1GB sandisk works 100% fine never fails at all until i remove it.
I then have to insert it 5-10 times to get it recognised again by the wizard.
I'm having a somewhat similar problem
I use my XDAII mini as an ebook reader on the train, which is fantastic, but storing the ebooks on the storage card is all but useless. I'll get x number of pages into the book, then Microsoft reader will tell me that the book is no longer readable. I can still access the storage card fine, but the only way to continue reading the ebook is to move the ebook file from the storage card to the main memory, which sucks.
Anyone else have similar problems, or know a solution?
Cheers
Chris.

From a Wizar user, is the Herald a worth update?

My Wizard has served me well, but it's beginning to freeze or crash too often when working. Last week I did a hard-reset, but it didn't help much. So I'm looking for an alternative device and the Herald is the natural succesor.
I'm looking for opinions. My top priority at this point is stability; I'm also considering the Hermes, but not having AKU 3 is a disadvantage. I want to run TextMaker or PlanMaker (SoftMaker Office 2006), QMail, and a few more apps like Resco 2005 and Pocket Weather, nothing too complicated. But I don't want to loose time because my Wizard freezed when I needed to access one document, or when connecting with Terminal Server.
Are you happy with your Herald? Do you recommend it for a Wizard user considering that it's almost the same PocketPC with a newer AKU and slimmer form factor? Thanks
Yes, it is. The device is much better built overall, and works faster.
yes, i've upgraded and its much better
I've just bought a Herald today to replace my Wizard, and so far it's looking very good
Thanks for the feedback . I'll probably get one this week. In fact some time ago I purchased a MicroSD for my Wizard in preparation for future upgrades (with a MicroSD to MiniSD adaptor, of course).
microSD to miniSD adaptor? I've never heard about such a thing. Are you sure?
Yup, I'm using a Micro SD in my Wizard with this adapter. I wanted to make sure that I don't have to change the memory card, regardless of what device I could get in the future. And I also have a Micro SD to Memory Stick Duo to use another Micro SD on the PSP. I hate having docens of incompatible memory cards .
BTW, I'm running Faria's AKU 3.3 ROM on my Wizard, so right now I'm not going to replace it. And since WM 6 is just around the corner, it's better for me to wait a bit. If the Herald gets the WM 6 upgrade and the Wizard doesn't, then I will get one.
Two weeks and my wizard will be replaced by a XDA terra (Herald) with WM6 installed. We´ll see what is better.
In two weeks this XDA Terra is going to be released with WM 6? Then it will be the first device being sold with WM 6.
I think I'm going to (patiently) wait for the Toshiba G900. It has a lot more punch .

Qtek terribly slow....

Al of a sudden my qtek is slow as hell. I had PDA Viet 4003 on it, I don't have any extra app installed and the phone is basically used for tasks, appointments, contacts, listen to music on my 4gb SD card, and a solitaire game here and there. I "formated" it and installed smart1.3 again (the one I had before) and nothing seems to speed the thing up. It is slow, slow slow. Even the wm5 novendor id was slow when I was switching. And bluetooth activesync went berserk too. How come? Anyone has any advice?
help....
Maybe is your SD. If it´s not an original one, it could be that is slowering your S200.
I have experienced that with a "false" SD, my apps were slowering a lot my PPC, as it was accessing the SD to read data, but the SD was not quick enough
Sorry about my english...
It could well be the SD Card. my vendor adviced me against a 4 Gb for the prophet for the same reason and suggested a 2 Gb instead.
Pull it out and give it a try.
Ok guys I really need your help because I am running out of options. I removed the SD card, tried without it and there's no way. The only way it seem to work is by using WM5.
Am I the only one here with that problem? I flashed (almost) every one of the available ROMs with the same results: S L O W !
What could have happened? Do I have to do to use my qt s200 with a wm6 rom? Or should I just pipe down, let it go and just use WM5?
Help!

Problems you describe should not occur even with stock rom. Sounds like something is wrong with your device. Have you recently tried changing anything, i.e. a new custom rom, radio etc etc?
not changed anything on the unit.
it has standard orange rom, and has never been changed.
this is the second HD with this problem.
i was thinking it might just be Orange have made a mess of it!!!
tried new roms etc on the first one. still no better.
so i rang orange and they changed it.. but this new one is just the same
in fact its worse!!!!!

Something is seriously amiss with your device. I'd advise you to backup whatever you need and then do a hardreset if you want to keep your current rom, or try a custom rom.
Whilst I can't speak for the Touch HD specifically, this would be far from the first time Orange (or any other network for that matter) had screwed up a phone's software by way of their branding.
The best thing you can do is try replacing the ROM with an un-Orange-ified one.
I got a similar experience, and I installed the latest stock ROM from HTC using USPL. (RUU_BlackStone_HTC_Europe_1.56.401.0_Radio_52.62.25.34_1.13.25.24_Ship.exe)
It was pretty easy (It took me about 15 min to flash the ROM) and it was worth.
the only pain was to reconfigure all your applications, but it depends on how many you have added.
TomTom is working perfectly.
can anyone recomend a ROM & Radio to flash to a HD on UK orange?

Hey Mate,
I had experienced similar issues with the stock Telstra branded ROM, I am now using Windows 6.5.1 (Build 230XX) on my mobile which has a much better touch user interface to WM 6.1. 6.5.1 would be a little less stable than 6.5 (Build 218xx).
[23/10/09] XannyTechROM GRID LEO 1.9 Latest Leo (WM 21870.5.0.70)
[16.10.09] MaryOne v0.05☻Build 23071☻Leo 1.28☻[MANILA 1920xx]☻
Are 2 great Newer ROMS
I'd advise you to check the file system of your memory card.
I had a similar issue where pocket player was taking minutes to start up, device was hanging, etc.
The disk check found and corrected a number of errors and everything is working normally since then,
Just connect the phone as a disk drive to the pc and run a disk check.
ya just before i mentioned this thing in somewhere else on forum orange provider htc touch hd is crap i dont know what hey have done with it but it was seriously lagging then my one of vodafone....... even touch flow 3d doesnot work good enough.
i am saying this having experience of my bros mobile.of orange network
thanks god vodafone saved me. though htc touch hd 2 is giving me greed...

Definately sounds like the problems you can be having with messed up SD card. I had similar experience, so try removing the memory card first and if this does not help - hard reset (could be some bad application you installed) or new ROM. Plenty of them around here most of them pretty good.
what id do is the following:
grab http://www.business.orange.co.uk/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Business&cid=1135315301990&c=OUKPage&rootid=1130996672026&roottype=NavMenuItem&extarg1=1044137233185&extarg2=HTC+Touch+HD%E2%84%A2&extarg4=select
remove sim + SD card
hard-reset & let it configure
connect to pc (activesync) and run orange's latest RUU
allow to configure
test your issues to see if their resolved
if fixed, re-insert sim+SD card
SD card has various ways todo it. i just connect phone to pc, use 'storage card' option for conneciton type, then format as the lowest format (fat preferably, but usually fat32. NTFS has issues according to many, i havent tried)
i havent tested the mp3 playback on my HD (dont use it), but i've found too many issues with cooked roms i've now reverted back to shipping ROM's just to get a 100% working reliable phone.
ime cooked roms all have one of the following wrong with them:
- beta release software causing instability
- slow performance
- buggy features (Dutty's Leo R6 has bluetooth issues)
that said, there is a ton of reasons to go with cooked roms, just the con's outweigh the pro's for me.
