Losing connectivity to storage card - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I did some searching, but couldn't find a related post, so here goes ...
I have started to have an issue where I lose connectivity to my storage card ... my wizard just simply stops recognizing the card. Ejecting and re-inserting the card has mixed results, but after enough attempts it finally starts recognizing the card again.
It had worked fine for several months and now it is fairly regular problem. Is anyone else having this issue?
Cingular 8125
TopRam 2GB miniSD
My wizard is certainly passed warranty and all the ejecting/inserting can't be a good thing for the phone. Thought I would check with the community before purchasing a different miniSD to determine if the problem lies there.
Thoughts?
Thanks, Greg

I had this problem with the cheap miniSD card I bought, I replaced it for a Sandisk one, and the problem went away.
Have you tried the card in a computer via card reader?

Thanks for the confirmation ... I will pursue a new miniSD.
I ad tried it in a card reader awhile back and it worked fine. Maybe I will try a more exhaustive test to see if I can reproduce.
Thanks again, G

i am having the same problem with my 2gb sandisk. sometimes it doesnt recognize it and i have to eject/reinsert the card again. its a pain in the ass!

i have this problem once every month and it makes me feel like tossing my phone against the wall. just when u break into the phone and like it, everything ****s up.
today, just today, my memory card stops working, nothing will read the card anymore.
brand doesn't mean anything, my card was as 2gb Sandisk.

WOW .. maybe this is more of an issue than I suspected. What could be causing this issue ...
- Obviously it could be a wizard hardware issue, although I would suspect that lots of people would be having the problem.
- Could be a card problem, either lemons or specific brands/sizes
- Could it be ROM related?
- Other possible causes?
Maybe we need to gather some information on those that are having the problem.
My data is as follows:
- Cingular 8125
- TopRam 2GB miniSD
- Submitter 2.24 ROM
ROM Version 2.24.10.1 WWE
Radio Version 02.25.11
Protocol Version 4.1.13.12
ExtROM Version 2.25.11.102

I get this problem with my 2GB Sandisk as well.
It's starting to look like a brand issue isn't it?

I'm not sure about brand, i've looked around and this happens for every brand.
my Rom is a Tmo 2.17
and im usig a 8125 with tmo-rom
i think this is a hardware issue.

I have the same issue. Brand new MDA Vario and cheap 2GB card.
It usually works if I stick the card in the PC card reader then back in the Vario again, but I shouldn't really have to keep doing that.

I'm not sure what the deal is with these MiniSD's, but maybe they're just not ready for prime time. I recently purchased two 2gb Kingstons and one was bad, not being recognized by two computers, two card readers, nor the MDA. The second was received and ditto, same problem. Keep in mind that the first card was okay and has worked without issues.
I then called Newegg, attentive as always, and they agreed to refund the Kingston and take my order for a Transcend, which was $15 cheaper anyway. The Transcend worked fine.
This trouble is odd because Kingston is a major supplier of memory modules, and I've installed their RAM in a number of computers, including this one, with no problems. I'm obviously not the only one who's experienced problems with these tiny MiniSD's, and I suspect maybe they've overdone the size-reduction trend to a point where reliability is jeoporized. Or, perhaps it is just the 2gb modules. I have two Ridata 1gb MiniSD's, the first I bought for the MDA, and they have performed flawlessly.

My 1GB sandisk works 100% fine never fails at all until i remove it.
I then have to insert it 5-10 times to get it recognised again by the wizard.

I'm having a somewhat similar problem
I use my XDAII mini as an ebook reader on the train, which is fantastic, but storing the ebooks on the storage card is all but useless. I'll get x number of pages into the book, then Microsoft reader will tell me that the book is no longer readable. I can still access the storage card fine, but the only way to continue reading the ebook is to move the ebook file from the storage card to the main memory, which sucks.
Anyone else have similar problems, or know a solution?
Cheers
Chris.

Dissapearing Mini-SD Storage card

Hi all,
I bought my Vario from T-Mobile with Co-Pilot which came on a 256mb mini-sd card. I then bought a 2GB Mini-sd card to swap into the phone for storage. This card worked for a short while - 1 day then stopped showing in file explorer etc. It also wouldn't show when using a card adapter on the pc whereas it had been working. I sent it back to where I bought it from and received a replacement. This card then did the same, worked fine for a day on both pc and in the phone then stopped being found by both. Could my phone be zapping the cards? I've just retried the original 256mb card and that is failing now too.
Disapearing minSD-card
Hi,
I've got the same, but it is gone since I updated the ROM. Maybe it is worth a try!
Best regards, Sebastian
Hi,
What Rom are you on? I'm on the I-Mate one at the moment, just downloaded the new T-Mobile AKU2 one today. Will try that one later I think. Thanks.
Snoop.
Well I updated the ROM to the new T-Mobile AKU2 one and my storage card now works fine. I formated it as FAT to make sure and so far, all is looking good. It also seems a bit quicker that when I had the I-Mate ROM loaded.
Snoop.
my 1gb card does this quite often too, if i push it in and out 10/15 times it seems to reconise it again, i gave it a good blow out with an airline and it was better for a while
Yeah I tried that too. Didn't work for me. It also wasn't working in the card reader on the pc so I suspected the phone was corrupting the card. Happened to 3 different cards. I was loathed to take it out of the phone for fear of it not working when I put it back in. Had it in and out now and works every time.
Seems to be quite common (might go as far as to say everyone will have this problem at one point or another). I noticed it first, when I pulled out the mini SD to show to a buddy what it looked like. When I put it back, it wouldn't show on my today-screen monitor. I pulled it out, put it back in a lot of times and after a while it came back.
Never ever had this problem with the S100, so this must just be a typical problem for the 9100. I too have a 2gig sandisk.
It could also be a design flaw with mini SD -cards, if you experience the same problem with memory card readers.
-JJ
Me too!
I also had this problem. I had 2 1 gig mini-SD cards, one is now dead and the other started exhibiting the same problems on my Vario. Hopefully the new UK rom I updated it to will have fixed these probs.

minisd problems after device goes into standby

Anyone else having an issue where after the trinity goes into standby maybe 2-3 times you are no longer able to access the minisd card? It still shows it being there.. but if you try to open any files it comes up with errors or will hang before finally timing out. The only way to resolve it for me has been to eject it and reinsert the media. The card works fine in my Wizard so I know it's not the card. The card is a 1gb Kingston Tech.
This dosen't help you anything, but just for information; it works fine for me... I've got a 2 GB miniSD from Sandisk

Maybe you are right and it's not the card, but I have lost count of how many messages I have read in forums about problems with Kingston cards!
I have a 2gb Sandisk card and it works fine I use windows media player with all mp3 files stored in the card so I would have noticed this problem immediately.
thanks for the responses.. I'm going to buy a new card and see if that works better
Problem Solved!
I went ahead and picked up a 2gb transcend card and now my problem went away. Thanks for the suggestion to try another card.

I'm also having problems with my SanDisk 2GB card. Didn't exactly check if the problems occur once it's gone on stand-by a couple of times but yes, there have been times I've had to eject and re-insert it to get it working again.
I'm fairly sure it's a bug and not the card because I've also been using the same card in my HTC Wizard and it's worked fine.
Hope there are some ROM updates soon.
same problem with my 2gb 80x from transcend, the card disappear in file explorer , i have to eject and re insert it too.
I did see it happen once and that was on the first day of use.
hmm.. wierd my transcend 2gb card has been working flawless for the past 4 days.. whereas my kingston 1gb would disappear within a few minutes. Guess it's all in the luck of the draw at this point until we get a rom fix. At least the good news is that Trinity forced me into upgrading to a 2gb card which I wanted to do anyway. So I'll give the phone credit for at least that
Initially I had the simmilar problems with my Sandisk 2GB card.
Then I discovered that PocketMax Phonealarm 1.57.00 caused problems. After I went back to Phonealarm 1.56.10 everything worked fine again. The most recent version of Phonealarm is 1.58.00 but I did not try that version yet as 1.56.10 works fine for me.
To see if your Phonealarm is causing problems just try to uninstall, softreset and use your device for a while without Phonealarm.
Since I have never used Phonealarm I'd go for a bug.
I have a Trinity and I noticed this problem with every program or data stored on my 2gb card.
Here is my conversation with the HTC support team :
Q : "I have a serious problemn with my new p3600 : each time it resumes from stand-by mode, the micro sd card is not recognized anymore. The result is I can't use my GPS software or any program installed on the card, nor any program can access to system files or music.
WHat can I do to fix this rather bothering issue?"
A : "Dear Mr. Simon,
Thank you for contacting HTC Europe support.
With regards to your query, there are no known issues with this device and storage cards. I would however advise you that these devices though they may work with 4GB cards are only tested with 2GB cards. If your SD card is over 2GB i would advise trying a smaller one.
If the card is 2GB or smaller, you may wish to try a hard reset or a different make of card.
Failing that the contact details below are for your relevant repair center."
If anyone has a hint on this issue, please let us know because it's rather disappointing for such an expensive device.

That sure was a disappointing reply from them. I'm pretty sure their tech department is aware of this and its just their support staff that aren't informed of these things.
Anyway, time to play the waiting game.
Had this issue with my 1gb kingston card but the problems occured more often when i was installing and uninstalling apps, with the 2gb from Sandisk at the moment no problems.

No problems with my sandisk 1GB card.
I have used a kingston 2gb card for about two weeks now and I do not have any problems whatsoever with standby and this brand of miniSD
I had the same problem initially with a unbranded 2gb mini-sd purchased from ebay. I purchased a new 2gb Transcend and no problems yet.

Good Morning,
It appears that the transcend card you refer to does not work in our p3600 device. Therefore it seems that the P3600 does not support SDHC cards.
Thank you for your enquiry, Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your Local number can be found at http://www.europe.htc.com/support/cs_by_phone.html

I just bought a sandisk 1gb and haven't noticed any bug since. Therefore it means the Trinity doesn't like no name cheap memory cards.
At last, I can make the most of my little wonder!
Has anyone tried with the sandisk ultra cards?
I have an Ultra Sandisk 2 GB and it works like a charm on my Trinity. However, I recently used the Pocket Mechanic 2,23 and it screwed up my mini sd and warrented a format from my laptop following the defragmentation of the card through Pocket Mechanic. It is reported that Pocket Mechanic screws the sds if you use them to mess/ format or defragment the cards. I reinstalled everything with the exception of PM and now I have no problems.

Gilbert

Storage card not working - vario 2

Call me unlucky but after having had 3 repaired (reconditioned) vario 2 PDA's from T Mobile within 4 weeks, which all overheated, they finally gave me a brand new Vario 2 from the shop floor.
Problem is, when I insterted my brand new Micro SD 1Gb sandisk storage card, its not recognised. Also, I notice that when its been inserted for 10 mins, the little metal hook hole on the device (where you attach can a strap) got VERY hot, as well as the area around the storage card got hotter. I have tried a friend SD card and that too does not work. I have also tried soft resetting device with card in/out but no joy.
Has anyone heard of this before? and is there a fix so that it recognises it? Also, why the overheating?
Thanks
Al

Also worth trying to reformat the SD card with a PC. Some folks find too that they have to be very careful in inserting the card to make sure it is seated correctly.
Mike
Thanks gents. Well Ive reformated it with a PC and I already know the card works fine in other devices/PC so its not faulty.
Has anyone heard of this happening?

Other folk have had problems. I have seen debate about whether some brands eg Sandisk are not good etc. I use a Sandisk without problems but others do. There has been discussion in this forum - perhaps try the google search sticky post.
Mike
Also, when the card is inserted, as well as the heat increasing in the device, the battery runs down at 5 times the normal rate. It just lost 20% in the last hour....sitting doing nothing.

The micro SD issue: Which work; and which don't!

Hi guys!
I've read several threads here regarding which cards work and don't work in our machines. One of the main threads is ridiculously long, and describes various reg hacks that do NOT solve the problem.
In my opinion, there is NOTHING worse than a PDA that needs to be rebooted every day or several times a day.
I am starting this thread just to bring the basic information into one place.
I can tell you right now:
I have two 2GB Sandisk MicroSD cards, and one 512MB card.
Not surprisingly, all three have problems in two 8525 devices, with two different WM5 ROM.
I know that the 1GB Made in Japan Kingston seems to work flawlessly.
Can anyone else please share their experiences in this thread? Let's keep it nice and clean, so that people wanting to understand what works and what doesn't.
How are the 2GB Kingston cards? Anyone have any luck?
I have used the SanDisk 2GB with no known issues.
I also have a 2g Sandisk with no issues over nearly 11 months.
I'm not sure you will prove much here as I have seen folks who swear Sandisks are bad and Kingstons (typically 2gig) are flawless. Equally I have seen exactly the reverse views reported. It may have more to do with physical connections (contacts) between device and the card.
But lets see how it pans out.

I have as well and love it. Only issue I have is getting the little sucker out! I just leave it in. The only way I have found to get it out is by opening the back, and using an eye glasses screw driver to slide it out.
sandisk 2g and 1 g here and no issues with either work perfect. um you do know if you push it in it releases the catch and it pops out like its suppose to right?

Not AKU2.3?
Hands up those of you who have microSD card problems with AKU2.3 ROMs!
Using a SanDisk 1Gb here no problems. Also using WM5 Build 14955.2.3.0, which is AKU 2.3 is it not?
Mine is the HERM300 (MDA Vario 2).
help
hi I am usin 1gb kingston with hermes.and its speed is too slow like 30kpbs via wm5 storage.I think I need to format my card correctly.any help?
and can any body tell me any tweak to have programs install on folders of my own choice?
thx in advance.
it is a pleasure to write from hermes .....hehe
Kingston 2GB made in Taiwan
Often not responding after loading for a few times. Need to be inserted into the device again.
Toshiba 2GB made in Japan
No problem until now.
Wow, I've got something different!
1GB Corsair MicroSD in my Imate JasJam.
Worked flawlessly for 6 months until I became the new owner of both phone & card, it then had card detection issues for a couple of days, but came good on it's own.
Now on WM6 and still working fine. I'm wondering if larger than 2GB cards will work.
Cheers! Oggy.
I purchased a SanDisk 4gb microSDHC and it DID NOT work!!!
I am now back to using my 2gb A-data microSD (which works fine).
No problems with my A-Data MyFlash 1GB, although once or twice I did have to use a tweezers or a needle to extract it. Just FYI, I bought my card on NewEgg.com, and people there usually leave feedback on if the card worked or not on their particular mobile device.
Very interesting.
So it looks like some people have 2GB Sandisks with NO problems.
Mine pops in and out quite nicely, actually. Although on my dad's unit, you need a tweezers.
Typical......!

I have a 8525, had that issue on day 1 and it was driving me crazy. then I thought let's put a needle down there and see what happens!! the thing lost its virginity, now pops in & out just fine
BTW I have Sandisk 2GB microSD card (Made in Taiwan) which works fine, I just have to eject and reinsert it in sleep mode.. else i'll have to SR so that the device would recognize it.

My unlocked M3100 has stopped seeing the storage card - nothing wrong with the card (tested elsewhere), and it used to work (on M3100). How might I rectify this?

My SanDisk 2GB Taiwan card would disappear every other day or so. It wasn't a huge problem as I'd just have to pop it out and push it back in to get everything working again, but I needed another microSD card for another device so I bought a Kingston 2GB hoping to get a Japan card. I ended up with a 2GB Kingston Taiwan card, but it works just fine (a month now) without disappearing *knocks on wood*

I have occasional problems with a 1GB Made in Japan Kingston, so I have to disagree with your statement.
I am convinced that this problem is hardware related. Either a connector fit problem as Michael Channon believes, and/or a motherboard problem as I believe. Earlier Hermes motherboards were manufactured by Hitachi, HTC now uses a different supplier for their motherboards. Rumour has it that the Hitachi mobo's have a problem with the mSD card hardware (could be the same problem I s'pose).

Sandisk 2GB card
I also have a Sandisk 2GB.
It had trouble ejecting the first few times and I had to use tweezers or the tip of a razorblade to get it to slide out but after a very short time it started moving normally.
My 8525 does lose site of the card from time to time and I sometimes have to re-insert it several times before it is recognized but I have not had to reset the phone to get it to come back.

Memory card problem

Hello everybody,
I just bought a Kingston 2GB MicroSD with miniSD and Sd converters. It doesn't work on my MDA Vario. I tried with 1GB microsd and there was no problem. Then i tried the 2GB card on my Charmer and it read it in a blink. I formatted the card numerous times and the vario can't read it. So I'm out of options now.
The first time I used the 2Gb card the vario read it and then i copied some files with a card reader (under Ubuntu 8.04), and then it stopped reading it
Can you guys think of something that can fix the card?
had the same problem
i also had the same problem with my 8125 and i did a lot of things to it like yourself.
but the only thing that got it fixed was to flash a rom back to my 8125. so i flash the same rom i had and my sd card worked like a charm.
i hope i have helped.
I have had a lot of trouble with memory cards in my Wizard. Sometimes they're read, and sometimes they're not. And some never read. Very frustrating! You can keep trying to insert and remove it; once it a while it will appear. But once it sees it, it doesn't "lose" it, so I'm always very reluctant to eject a memory card. I've got a 1GB micro-SD in a converter and it works most of the time. I wish I knew why it was so flaky.
Considering the sheer number of posts like these that I've seen, I'm inclined to think that the Wizard just has a crappy card reader. It's a shame, but then again, it's also a pretty old phone, by current standards (18 months is obsolete in phone lifespans).
Thanks for the responses!
I have an update.
I made a hard reset - nothing. Then I flashed the latest TNT WM6.1 ROM - still nothing.
Card isn't working (actually it is but only with power off/power on), although my Charmer still reads it. I made several low level formats, and formatted it with the charmer. Nothing happened. So i tried a friends 2G Kingston MiniSD. It works without any problems. Still he said he had some issues so he removes it only when the device is off. However this is not acceptable for me and i'm now using 1Gb microSD with adapter.
The thing that really bugs me is that the Charmer reads it with no problems. The hardware in the charmer is pretty much the same besides the SD slot and lack of wifi.
I would suggest that you don't use your card with ubuntu 8.04 + card reader. It killed my SD card once (on the Charmer) and i lost some information.
My guess is that the wizard has some problems with 2GB cards. As I know some SD card readers can't read 2G, because it was never intended for the SD standard to have such big cards. For this I would suggest that if you have any problems turn off the device put the card and power it on. It should see it then. I can't recall which FAT i used for format, i think it was fat32. I think the wizard runs a bit slower with the 2G, but it could be my imagination.
Until I can solve this problem with not seeing the card when it is plugged while the device is on I'm sticking to 1G.
Is your 2GB card SD, or is it SDHC?
SDHC cannot be read by HTC Wizard, period. There have been a few card makers that actually produce 4GB mini SDs, but they number in single digits (and low, at that). Generally, you can find 2GB miniSDs without too much hassle. I'd be very surprised to find a microSD over 2GB. If your microSD is SDHC, there's your problem, right there.
Also, the general consensus from these boards is that your SD card should be formatted to FAT, not FAT32, to be read by a Wizard consistently. It'll still be readable by other machines, but your Wizard will balk at reading FAT32 (not all the time, but most of the time).
Lastly, never bother trying to use your phone as a USB card reader. It's just way too slow. If you have a card reader, stick to loading/unloading with that.
And turning off the phone to jack in/out the miniSD is a very good idea. It may not be an ideal situation, but losing your data while you're away from your desktop isn't exactly optimal, either, is it?
It is SD, not SDHC. Kingston MicroSd with adapter, actually the one with 2 adapters.
I got the thing with the FAT, not FAT32, after I wrote the post, I formatted it using FAT.
The card reader and Ubuntu of course wrecked the 1Gb card I'm using (yesterday) - the wreck with the strange named dirs, so only Windows+card reader for now.
I don't care about the data on the card, it's not important (and I have a backup on the desktop). I would like to be able to put it in and out whenever I like, with the device on. It seems that this won't happen.
Thanks for the great input Myrddin Wyllt!
