I am having thoughts of installing a ssd drive inside htc shift. Is this possible? Has anybody tried it or dissasembly htc shift?

i dont know that im brave enuf to kill my warranty. If the drives are the same size and same power consumption and have the same mounting points then it should be easy.

Those are very easy upgrades, does anyone know the part #s for the existing items?
We need a ghost of a prestine box, make sure one of the senior guys when they get their box to ghost is right away.
Well one thing for sure an extra gigabyte of ram would help.
But is does seems we need a very specific module to replace the RAM.

I had some trouble opening the link but now it seems to work.
The problems I see is that Qimonda is a producer of RAM chips, not a retailer/seller of modules.
And second they only list 1GB sets.
Third, where can we get our paws on a 2GB module?

also we have to find out if the vista bios supports 2 GB DDR microDIMM, the bios they are running is very weak, i suppose we would have to get a new one of those too :/

Can you tell me where you found that 2GB DDR2 MicroDimm?
Ok that is a lot about RAM but how about a SSD?
I believe the BIOS should support 2 gigs. I asked the folks at HTC about this and they didn't indicate any issues beyond the challenge of opening the device and the fact that it does void the warranty.

The MSD-PATA3018-032-ZIF1 is an 8mm drive (height), so no, it won't fit. You want the MSD-PATA3018-032-ZIF2 which is 5mm in height.

There is no reason for it to be so cheap, other than good value

btw: I buyed yesterday a MSD-PATA3018-032-ZIF2 within Ebay. We will see how fast it is. But I think this is the fastest ATA-7 1,8" HDD on Market. Mtron announced a 64 and 128GB Version as well a few months ago, but I never see anything like this.. :-(

With all of the software hacking in progress I was wondering if anyone has plans to upgrade the internal HDD of the Shift.
I presume there are may other Shift users which think that with an internal HDD of only 40GB, of which is even less usable, the potential is limited.
It would be great, but costly, to upgrade to a 64GB SSD but even a "normal" 120GB hdd such as in the OQO E2 would be a great upgrade.
That way we could put music, movies and more on it without kicking the limits of the disk every time. (Windows needs a lot of empty GB's to properly function so don't even think about filling it to the brim with whatever you think of )
Did someone already make the jump?
Or are there any tips/tricks for doing so?
I suppose I could just get a normal laptop hdd of 2.5" (or maybe 1.8") and replace the internal one.

I thought it was an 1.8" and yes, i THINK you can replace it.
I don't know the exact size of it and if it fits.

Oh sweet, a 100GB 1.8Inch ATA100 disk.
The price is quite acceptable too, however it would be nice to find a 120GB model
Now I just need to break open my Shift......

well i would look at the specifications of those disks ( one is GAL connector and the other is GAH connector)
and also the hight of the drive is diffrent so might not even if you figure out the connector isue it might not fit

they have released a lot of great software for there 7" device that would be great for the shift like a hot key command thing for moving dialouge boxes that dont fit on the screen see below and also a resoloution hack to upscale it to 1280*1024 despite native resoloution only being 800*400 (this is driver based but a similar driver may be used for the shift) would be worth looking into and maybe sharing on here.. By the way i did not create this programe but have used on my eee i dont have a shift but as it runs vista it should work fine this is the thing for moving dialougue boxes enjoy..

Will it be as simple like removing the bottom plate, removing the disk, inserting a new one and putting back the bottom plate?

ehm you are disassembling the shift?
In order to reach two screws, it seems that you need to remove the two rubber feet covering them. How well will that go without damaging stuff and more important: will you be able to put them back on in a way that they will stay there?

This one is 8mm in height.
The original disk in the Shift is 5mm.
Now the question is: will this 0.3mm difference matter or will it just not fit?
If anyone is interested in the translation of that website, let me know.
The difference between 5 and 8 mm is 3 mm, not 0,3 mm. And inside the Shift 3 mm difference is a lot!! I'm affraid this will definitely not fit...
I have come across this link, someone has open up Shift completely, it's in chinese so i will summarize his finding, it seems like there is hope on SSD upgrade, space is enough, 1.8 inch hard drive size. RAM upgrade seems to be possible until the 2G ram is in production. He mentions the sliding mechanism can be improve if open up the Shift, but he didn't mention how.

it could be possible to desolder the ram chips and replace them with higher capacity ones. I believe that the shift can take 2gb of ram without any other modifications. The problem is finding those chips and a service center able to perform such tasks.

I have taken my shift apart, and there isn't more space for the drive than the one that is mounted, so only the 1,8" 5mm low profile drives will fit, as far as I know the biggest is 40GB atm.
I can't see what is wrong with the connector for the ram it's a standard microdimm connector for ulv devices as you can se here Kingston makes them !! and my source tells me that a 2GB module is in preproduction.

Can't wait for 2 GB ram on this device bet it would make a good bit of difference but I think the biggest difference would be seen with an SSD.

Do you know If gps will be accesible from vista side? I ve fallen in love with sygic pc version. Winmo version is nice but we know we havent 3d drivers for ati hardware. Pc version is running very smoothly in vista. It looks a video game...........

When the guys get the GPS to work, it SHOULD be possible to share it through the USB tool connection so that VISTA can use it.

The Dell Tablet uses a ribbon type drive. Their is a diffrent connector but anyone is willing to adventure I bet you can take the hard drive side of the ribbon cable off and swap them.

Has anyone approached HTC about creating an official RAM upgrade that does not void warranty?
Could maybe HTC authorize certain companies in different regions of the world to perform the upgrade.
For example, PPC Techs does iPaq memory upgrades, not with HP's blessing, but they have shown expertise.
The reason I suggest having HTC bless this type of upgrade is 2 fold:
they have the resources to properly test and create a aftermarket kit
they may be shamed into doing something with some sort of subsidized cost to Shift owners since clearly having the combination of processor, memory and OS can never work efficinently since Vista was designed for higher processing power and more memory
This is just a suggestion, these devices can not cost $1000 to produce, HTC must have some serious profit in these puppies.
A side note on the SSD, based on my readings, the SSD drives use more battery power.
If there were to do any other updates, I would suggest making SD slot accessible to Snapview and enable Wifi on Snapview, maybe have an official liberation ROM as well for Snapview.
The additional memory on Vista side and better battery life (like Mugen bigger batteries for Shift) will make Shift almost perfect!!!

I agree, and from the post where there is the disassembly guide, the RAM looks totally different!!
And 509$ is a big challenge.
apparently, the Fujitsu UMPC that the RAM is for uses 214 pin Micro DIMM Ram. All the info I've read around the internet says this, but I haven't been able to find a disassembly guide (of the Fuji UMPC) to confirm this visually. As to the picture on the Fuji website, all of their ram upgrades use the same pic. Am I willing to be the first to drop the cash to find out? No sir, but hopefully someone will be able to show a pic, or actually pull the trigger and buy one.
I have no idea. I just did a search for 2GB MicroDIMM and got this result in google. Hardware experts should say if it is compatible. But if within MicroDIMM, there are different pin types then it is not good. It just leads to confusion for the consumers.

as almost everyone in this forum, I'm eagerly waiting for a 2GB memory module to install in my Shift. I'm sure that a 2GB memory module would make Vista really fly and take a lot of the disk-swapping out of it.
I just emailed a good friend who works for a memory company, asking if/when they will be selling a 2GB part, based on the specs that were published above.

Anyone else seen that before?
I do not think it s a way to free up to full 2GB as advertised?
Other brands deliver 2GB if they tell their devices have, why not so z5 compact?

Where's the source on what you're talking about? The RAM is always going to be used up by something - the OS, launcher, etc. You're not going to turn the phone on and have exactly 2GB of RAM available.
Sure, but it says 1,4 out of 1,8 used, 3xx free.
That means Limit is 1,8 as shown under Memory, not 2 as advertised. Never noticed that on a phone before.
As soon as the device is running memory is used, but it should say out of 2,0 not 1,8?

Coming from the technical, developer background:
you have to consider that device drivers also eat up quite some memory/storage (best example: the Galaxy S, GT-i9000: 512 MB advertised, at best 300 [384 at best] available)
it's only the device drivers, it's the kernel (system) itself that also needs memory
so you'd basically have to advertise e.g. 2 GB but plug in 3 or even 4 GB to have full access for e.g. apps
All companies define a gigabyte to be 1000MB, and a megabyte to be 1000kb, etc etc. In reality it's 1024KB per MB, and 1024MB per GB.
You never fully get 2GB, just check your computer eg. your hardrive might be 1tb big, but in reality its only somewhat over 900gb? 16gb ram might only be 15.9 gb!

The topic is...that in Windows the full RAM without any convertings of bits and bytes is shown.
Only Hard Disks have that "exchange" from 2TB to 1,8 e.g.
So I was not awaiting that on mobile RAM too.

Plus, on android some ram is reserved by GPU. Unlike dedicated graphic card on PC/Mac which got their owned ram but our GPU shared with system memory.
Same thing as onboard GPU on desktop systems so?

Hello,
that depends on what you want to do with your PC. The mainboard is the base and limiter for all other components except the power supply(in most cases).
Well, i only have a acer pre-built the motherboard is acers....
I want to use it for video rendering or gaming
It can run pretty much anything I think I've seen people upgrade it to an rtx and stuff
@Kenora_I if it was me, and I just did this upgrade 2 weeks ago and am loving it, If your 1tb of storage isn't a Nvme/M.2 I would do that. I had a 2.5 in sata had and for $80 on Newegg I got a WD 1TB sata m.2 and it's night and day difference. Boots in like 15 secs, instant response when multitasking etc. And I just use PC for everything but gaming. So coding/compiling is a mind blown difference lol
If I was you I would start saving for a new built to be honest, aim for a B550/B550M with a Ryzen 5600X for example. Video rendering and gaming will soon become a stretch on that system if it isn't already.
Assuming the power supply is non standard and not easily upgraded, the only real bottleneck that can be remedied is storage. Agree an M2 ssd would be best upgrade likely available.

I have the money, but I just hate the price inflation due to the chip shortages.
Dont wanna end up like one of those people with less RAM performance that LTT demonstrated in one of his vids

I would build new since you have several things that could use an upgrade in the next year or two. Adding upgrades to an older oem board is just money you will never recover for an end result of a PC still in need of a mobo upgrade.
Building new doesn't have to be that expensive nor does it have to be overpriced ryzen. I threw together an example here . Room to expand RAM by 2 slots later if needed. Less than $600 bucks and could use your GTX 1050 until you get an email that it's your turn to buy card at MSRP.
EVGA's notify list works, may take 2 or 3 months but you can get a card at MSRP.
In my opinion it would be best to wait until prices falls down to regular prices.
But you may consider getting SSD and HDD as you've mentioned you would be playing games and 1TB isn't sufficient.
You can look for case or better case fan if needed.
Mechanical keyboard and Mouse can be consider too.
You haven't mentioned about the PSU you may also consider that if you are looking forward to getting power hungry GPU in future.
Get a cooler if needed if prices are fair enough for it. (if you get one then get one where you don't have to buy one if you choose to upgrade to latest CPU.
In my opinion this are some possible upgrade you can make with your currant build.
If in case you choose to make new build in future then don't upgrade anything in this build presuming that you don't have any issue with currant build and your build gets job done.
In short upgrade if needed or just don't upgrade besides storage.

I have been on the EVGA list since beginning of the year, the only email I got from them was to tell me they're swapping the model I actually wanted to a low hash model. Thanks EVGA, how about you just make me a GPU. It's been 6 months.

Must depend on model. I signed up in Feb. and didn't have the money when 1660 ti came up, resubmitted for 1660 super and got it a couple of weeks ago. It's gotta be model, location shouldn't matter I wouldn't think. I don't know how they do it, but 6 months sucks.

You should be good, 750W is what EVGA Power Meter recommends for the components you listed. There are quite a few power supply calculators available online.
So, it really depends on what you want to do with your PC. Do you want to make your PC more suitable for gaming or work? As an example, I use editing software from Movavi and it requires a lot of good components such as SSD, high-end processor and of course a lot of RAM. From my point of view, you need to change your HDD to SSD and add more RAM, so you'll have a very powerful machine.
Now would be the time to start looking at things as prices are falling.
