Tips for a cheap & cheerful carkit - and it works - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

I didn't want a transformers style carkit for my Kaiser so I bought a magnet off ebay for a PDA - the Krusell one for £4, it comes with a thin metal plate you attach to the back of your kaiser and the magnet you attach to your dash. Well, it takes a lot to impress me and I must say it looks the business, also means you can have the Kaiser where you want it and not cradled low down. By chance I had my Tomtom Go wired in the dash from the cig adaptor and it's the same fitting, so a bit of re-routing and I have a carkit for £4 and 10 minutes of my time....priceless.
I'll post some pics when it's light ok.

Thank you for sharing, also will you please post the eBay auction you bought it from?
thanks

dont forget the pics. I think that might be a simple way of using the phone in the car

Here's a similar item on ebay - item no 160199677279
Total price incl postage is £5.50 (it's a UK item) - the full description is KRUSELL QUICKMOUNTER MAGNET MAGNETIC PHONE HOLDER
Pics soon ok.

They also sell this at sfplanet here in the States. Bought all my Krussel stuff from them and they ship fast and are not too expensive. Think this is what he's talking about...
http://www.sfplanet.com/product/C21/C21__Krusell_Quick_Mounter_01101.html

Looks real good and for a great price even with Canada shipping 15.00 CAD beats all the rest, just got one thank you

Can someone find a pic or maybe even take a pic of what this looks like when it's attached to the phone? As I've said in a previous post, I'm pretty leery of gluing anything to my baby. Maybe when I get my Seidio kit I'll stick one on that.
It's gonna take some convincing though.

Yup that's the one - enjoy!

Just for info...
Be aware that the sliding keyboard uses a magnetic detector to operate and if you suffer strange turn-ons (take a cold shower! ) you made need to use S2U2 or Kaiser Tweaks to disable it.
Same goes for some cases that have magnetic catches, they can sometimes turn your phone on inside the case when inserting.

OK, as promised:-

I don't actually own one of these, so I cannot tell you for sure, but from everything I have read and understand, nothing actually attaches to the back of the phone. The powerful magnet attaches to your dash and then just holds your phone there through magnetic attraction to the battery through the plastic cover.

As long as there are no issues with keyboard sensor (sliding sensor), I would be all over this. I like the clean look.
JB

prob is that you cannot tilt your phone in any way with this...
i gotta say it is a nice solution if you have a spot on your dash that is a good angle for your phone... i dont though so i have to get a mount with an actuating arm.

Haven't got a pic of the back sorry, with the krusell kit you get a very thin (1mm) plate which you apply to the back case of the Kaiser. This acts as the bond to the magnet. The instructions say you can place this plate inside your battery cover but their isn't enough clearance on the kaiser - it's hardly noticeable anyway.
I've been using mine now for 3 weeks and no problems, the magnet holds fantastic, the kaiser never falls off or moves when mounted. Best carkit I ever had.

Man, I'd love to see a picture of the back of the Kaiser with the plate on it.

This might ruin it for me, but I would have to see a picture. The price for the thing is very nice, but I don't really want to stick something onto my phone.

I decided to order another type of krusell case, because of two things with this plastic/leather case you bought.
1. It´s hard to press the buttons and use the screen properly without taking it out of the case.
2. The plastic will get dirty quite easily.
3. The attention drawn to the device, as it is widely open is not wanted.
Risk of getting it stolen is multiplied by many.
So i bought this one instead:

I too bought this one & am very happy with it. The clip on flap that covers/protects the camera lens is genious!
Good job Krusell
Yeah, krusell shure know how to make highquality and wellthoughtthru leather cases!
That´s swedish quality all thru

hi, sorry if there are any confusing
that message is meant for skenliv
and that krusell case (flip with clip) does come with the phone.
i don't know about imate, but O2 ones does have it included
Does it have the Krusell sign on the front?.. If not, it´s the standard case that comes with every XDA II Phone. And it is REALLY bulky and missfitting. This one is alot smaller in size, alot better quality and the flip is not down (as with the suplied case) but on the Krusell its down.
What do you think of this one,
plastic made but nice
i guess it s a better protection plastic is harder and anti choc
can be find here :
http://www.javoedge.com/simtrix/pro...Id=169&productRef=PSKN-71112-00&category=SKIN
Nice, good idea.
But it´s not very well protected, what about the screen?
The most important part of the XDA II.
They should have some protection for it to.
And you cant holster it on your belt, because there is no beltclip.
And besides, it has the same problem as the case at the top of this thread.
It gets attention, and will probably be stolen easily.
(especially where i live, to many rich people).
Cyberbob.
Does the plastic cover have a screen protector with it??!

Jam housing

Is there a "how-to" here on how to change the housing on an xda II mini or a Jam..or has anyone done it? They have housings on ebay, but wanna make sure i know how to change it before i go ahead and buy any...
Thanks
Really I couldn't find any on eBay. How much did you see them for? What did you search for?
The only place I can find them is Apex Laptops and they want £95 for one!
Mine is a bit beat up now and contract is nearly out so I'd like to smarten it up before selling it.
If you look on the wiki there are some pictures of the inside but I don't think there are any instructions. I tend to just unscrew stuff and sellotape the screws to some paper with little diagrams of where they came from.
There is a detailed document at this forum with pictures on how to disassemble your phone. Should help you to get the cover off/on.
Anyway, depending on how bad your cover is, you might want to consider a US$10 options of skinning it at www.skinit.com. It looks good on the page, but I'm not sure how good the quality will be. But, anyway, as long as it looks alright

That's just for the front and back cover mind, no chassis. Quite like the look of the black one.
I bought some *blue* typhoon sp3 cases from them once - they weren't new or in great condition, chip marks where the casing had been prised open, and from the look of the foam surrounds around the screen they'd def. previously been fitted to a phone

Doh! I've already ordered one :-(
I don't think the lack of new chassis is a problem since the case is identical to my MDAC I shouldn't need a new chassis. But does mean it's quite expensive though. But still less than a third the price of Apex Laptops.
I'll post if it's in new or second hand condition when it arrives.
Did you go for the dark housing.
I was lucky to get a late model MDA compact when I was out in china. Looks nice in the darker colour although I have started to use a black skin and some screen protectors as this phone really scratches easy.
I would like to see if the replacement cases are any good as well ?
I went for the silver one. I was tempeted by the black one but it's for selling not for me so better to stick with normal colour I think...
Also I see they have 87 of the sliver ones available so I think it's unlikley it will be used like the typhoon case was.

I've bought a black one. They have nearly 100 typhoon cases in each colour listed at any one time. Must cost them a fortune in ebay fees as no more than 10% of the listings sell!

hmm...
i droped my mini today, now theres a big ass sctratch on the top left...
*sigh*...
well would like to know if these cases from that ebay store fit, tell us when you fit that case -).
Whitemoo...
I wish mine had just a scratch... My Qtek looks like Rambo's mobile!
The inner plastic lining of the battery cover broke, so i had to bend it slightly - now it stays in place, but with a nice, big bump on the side edge.
Am very interested in knowing if the ebay housing fits (not to mention how the more talented tecchies here removed the screen). Was also thinking, after having seen personalizations of other xda's, of covering it with fabric material (I'm thinking STRIPEY!!!) and clearcoating it! I've already done this to my bass guitar, inpired by a tutorial over at projectguitar (http://projectguitar.com/tut/mat.htm), although I chose a less... "brave" material design...
Skinit
Just a word of warning, I bought a 'skin' from skinit. They are simply awful. They only cover the flat and even bits of my Qtek S110. Corners and sides, no. They may work better with a flat PDA or mobile with no rounded bits.
Still interested in this thread about getting a new case, keep it going please!

I just got mine the other day from eBay, and the front face doesn't fit all the way on or stay on. I'm going to have to return it and find another one.
I've finally tested this case for more than 10 minutes and I really hate the fact that the edges are not beveled in, making it extremely hard to use my fingers to press the softkeys on the screen, onscreen scrolling and some slight awkwardness when pressing the outside buttons.
Mine was also made of white plastic, so it has this ugly white lip around the edges.
After removing my BodyGuardz skin, the case fits snugly and is very hard to remove (I accidentally cracked the lower piece while removing)
Oh well, you get what you pay for. Time to read up on Seidio cases
http://www.wirelessaccessories.com/... 8925 - TyTN II - Kaiser&sfid=134039&c=164107
I've used these for my last 2 devices. I don't recommend the rubberized as they scrape up easy. While you get what you pay for ($5.95 + ship) so I buy several. I prefer the protection from scratches and ease of use . It does make getting to buttons a little harder, I agree.
I went on Ebay and got a clear one for around $4 shipped. looks decent, works, only thing about the clear ones is that dust tends to collect under them and phone looks dirtier. a quick clean and back to new. i dont recomend dropping the phone using the case, but in all honesty i dont recommend droping the phone all together.

Herbert Richter Bike Mount

Hey everybody,
I've tried searching (using the Google and built in search) for this information, but doesn't seem to be anywhere (unless I'm using the wrong search terms). Anyway, I've been thinking of buying something to mount my Vario III on my bike to make use of the GPS for ages, but have struggled to find anything that would suit what I want. For some reason today I started to look again, and I found this Herbert Richter bike mount, which looks pretty good, but I'm not sure whether it will fit.
http://www.pdahut.com/store/product.php?productid=19130&cat=1936&page=1
The problem I've got is that I want to mount it on the stem, instead of the actual handlebar (I'm talking bicycle, not motorbike ) and I'm not sure whether this would fit something with that big of a diameter. The specs on here have a couple of measurements in, but none of them seem to make any sense to me
Does anybody else already have one of these, or maybe any other suggestions about mounting on the stem? My handlebar space is already taken up by bike computer, heart rate monitor and tri-bar extensions, so I'm a bit stuck!
Thanks in advance for any help or advice
I don't have the mount you mentioned, but I have considered it. It doesn't offer any protection for PDA, which is a must for me.
As for attaching out Kaisers to our bikes, have a look at this and this thread.
I am currently waiting for my Otterbox case to arrive, which I will (somehow) attach to my bike.
I've had a look at the threads you mentioned, but these aren't really what I'm looking for. The one on the Modaco board with pictures is close, but the Otterbox you mentioned is simply too big.
I'm not after anything like shock protection or particularly worried about dropping it. I'd like to waterproof the phone, which I think I've got covered, so I'm just after a way of mounting it to my bike safely now.

In that case you might be interested in a case I have originally bought to mount to my bike - PDAir Aluminium case ( http://www.pdair.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=10100000_900000_11000164&products_id=6561 ). It has a screw at the back, so it should be possible to attach it to a bike. I was in a bike shop with the case and found a cheap holder (originally designed for bike light) that would fit, but just didn't seem massive enough for me.

Would you mind if I ask you how? (I mean how did you waterproof your phone and what is your overall solution so far).
I am using the Krusell setup for this exact purpose. I like the fact that I can buy multiple different mounts to work with the case. i.e. belt/bike/etc.
Here is a pic of it on my bike

I mean how did you waterproof your phone and what is your overall solution so far

I don't know how the Original Poster waterproofed his phone, but this is pretty fullproof http://www.skins-mobile.com/. I've seen them for sale on eBay.
I've ordered the mobile skins that sonus linked in the previous post to handle the waterproofing. They haven't arrived yet, so I haven't been able to test them. I might just go with a clear food bag or something, you know the type that presses together (I think maybe zip-lock to Americans?) at the top, but I'll see how the skins work and how comfortable I am using them
So all that's left is the mount, and from the 2 people I've e-mailed about the Herbert Richter mount I've been told:
1) Product is packaged, so can only say that it fits motorbike bars too (completely useless)
2) Fits bars up to 25mm diameter (seems a bit small to me)

Would be definitely too small for the stem on my bike.
Ok, well the Mobile Skins arrived to protect my phone, and... well... I think I'm gonna go the food bag route. Sure, they protect the phone from water really well, but they weren't really big enough to easily fit over the phone, and I wasn't that comfortable "slipping it on"
Plus, a food bag will be much easier to re-use, and a lot cheaper, plus it'll be clear so I can see the screen properly instead of struggling through the yellow mobile skin (the screen seemed to lose a lot of brightness).
I still haven't had chance to measure my stem on my bike for the mount or anything, but hopefully over the weekend I'll be able to get out (weather permitting) and try a few things!
All working fine on the handlebars here.
I initially tried a Krusell case and mount but when I found the case flap securing clip obstructed my TyTN IIs Ext USB port so I couldn't plug in my wired headphones while it was in the case closed, I returned that gear.
I now have a Herbert Richter bike mount like the one initially referenced (I bought the phone holder and handlebar clamp together) and despite initial reservations it works perfectly clamped around my handlebar but there's no way it'd fit around the stem. Although the holder is uncushioned and just made of smooth plastic, it's left no scratches behind on my TyTN II (original HTC model) case. I presume this is because the HTC version has a rubberised coating on the back/battery cover. I don't know how it would go with the Vodafone V1615's shiny plastic back though.
I was also concerned that the TyTN II may fly out the front under heavy braking but so far its remained firmly in place (perhaps assisted by the rubberised backing). My bike is electrically assisted (it's a Giant Twist) but there seems to be no interference with the TyTN II GPS and Tomtom Navigator 6 and all seems to be working fine together. It's worth it seeing the surprised pedestrians after they hear navigation directions coming from a bike
Skins are Cool!
These Mobile Skins are so cool. I purchased a few 3-packs and I need more. I found a site called www.skinsmobileusa.com in the US. I found out this is the only place to find them. They provide great mobile protection. I do a lot of surfing and now I can at least take my phone to the beach. Skins keeps out the sand and water as long as I am there.

hard case for extended battery

lesson learnt last night, dont ride a bike in the dark while looking at the phone (checking route on gps) bike went one way, i went another and phone slid along pavement about 30ft. phone works ok but case badly scratched new case is on order.
ok, so what i need is a hard case, plastic or aluminium which will cover phone with extended (double thickness) battery. yes, i searched already.
Where did you get the case? I find it nowhere.
My battery cover was damaged, please share the link if you find it somewhere.
got one off ebay. some have htc logo, some dont. search for 'HOUSING COVER Kaiser'.
also try http://cnn.cn/shop/p4550-tytn-kaiser-c-277_447.html
edit: you only want battery cover? how about google 'kaiser battery cover', that might work ;-)
Check here -> www.seidio.com
is this the case?
http://www.seidioonline.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CSR2YCG8925X-BK&Show=ExtInfo
it says its only for seido batteries and mine is an unbranded double thickness one.
standard battery is 5mm and mine is 11mm thick. also it doesnt look like it protects the screen, i only need to see the screen.
still looking.....

Try this;

I'm currently looking into adapting this case to mount to the bars or stem like a standard cycling computer, so I can use my TyTN2 as a do-it-all device for mountainbiking. I'll obviously need the extended battery to use it in this capacity (GPS navigation and datalogging, Bluetooth MP3, calls and text, etc) which this case can support, as well as being quite protective. I was thinking it could ride safely like this;

i have the seidio case, and it's actually "yes" and "no" in terms of battery compatability. the outer case will only fit over the replacement back included with the seido battery, or a back that isn't larger than the seidio back i guess. but any extended battery you can fit under the seido replacement back will do (i use both mugen and a sedio extended batteries under the back)
it doesn't have something to cover hte screen, but it does give more depth to the surrounding ridges, and maybe a screen protector can help with the rest...
the boxwave looked interesting, and i was about to go for it, but i notice that it has a bump only for the battery, which closes down at the caemra and speaker area. that means a different type of back is needed for that also.
at the moment, i am just using the seidio rubberized case over the seidio replacement back. when i travel, i've had a leatherworker modify a leather case (one of those that provides full access to the keyboard etc. but has a flap to cover the screen when not in use) for me to fit around the extended dimensions, but i guess this is not what you need.
@Barkleyfan: cheers, the boxwave one with screen cover looks to be just what i need.
have thought several times of mounting on bike like that, would be ok for road use, but then i remember how many times i have seen my bike bouncing down a hill on its own and me on the deck usually i keep the phone attached on a lanyard and in a padded case fixed on my backpack shoulder strap, but would feel better if it was also in aluminium case. i think mounted on the bars like that is just asking to get broken.
My riding is getting conservative these days, so I don't worry about wrecking hard enough to hurt it. I worry more about a splash from a creek or something.
@Barkleyfan "I was thinking it could ride safely like this" down the side of the snow covered mountain, and you call that conservative. i am not in your league, that would scare to **** out of me! or... is that not your bike
lol Nah, that's not my bike. That's Jill Homers bike. This is mine;
