New pics of the HTC guts from the FCC - Shift General

Thanks to mobility site:
http://mobilitysite.com/2008/01/htc-shift-finally-approved-by-fcc/
looks like there are new pix from the FCC, available Jan. 14, 2008:
https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas...omFrame=N&application_id=326547&fcc_id='NM8CL
They show a picture of "HDD 2" that is the Samsung HS06THB
http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...up=72&type=60&subtype=68&model_cd=300&tab=fea
so it looks like 60gb, 4,200 rpm PATA is definitely going to be an option in addition to 40 gb from Toshiba:
http://www.toshibastorage.com/main....pticalDrives/1.8-inchHardDiskDrives/MK4009GAL
Not sure if that's groundbreaking news or not, but nice ot see confirmation of 60gb. Now if there was just an easy way to get an SSD in this thing....
I'd be interested if anyone can infer anything from the motherboard chips they used that's different from the early specs, such as their display controller:
http://www.chrontel.com/pdf/7317ds.pdf
Whoa! And why are they showing pictures of "Panel 1" and "Panel 2" ? Are there going to be multiple panel options? 1024 x 600 maybe? please? <grin> Or is it just the display and the touch screen?
Now if they would just start actually SELLING the darn things!!!

Htc Diamond!!

This phone looks really cool, and i thought i would share it with you.
The May 6th event in London in London is drawing ever closer. It is still three days away, and our mouths are already watering for the HTC Diamond. The presumed highlight of the show, will be the HTC Diamond. Now, instead of the low quality spy shots we have seen, we finally have some awesome images. Also, we have the rumored specifications of the device. Strap in, because this is some exciting stuff.
For media, there is a 3.2 megapixel camera, 4GB of internal storage with MicroSD expansion still on the table, FM radio and a 2.8 inch glorious VGA screen. This things rocks Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, and has the hardware to back it up, with a 528MHz CPU monster. Connectivity is a sure thing, with HSDPA 7.6mbps, and WiFi, you are ready for all the high speed you can handle. To round out the feature list, it has a slide out QWERTY, quad band GSM, a rumored accelerometer, and is 10.7mm thick

I'll tell you why:
Because this is the most popular thread and people get a wider coverage for their posts here.
It sucks that they misuse the xda-forum like this, and they make it a nightmare for the rest of us to navigate the forum.

This is true and I had thought of posting my Themes in this section which others have but, I posted them in general instead. Making a theme isn't development IMO as compared to making the killer app iTask.
That thing is ugly
Sorry for posting in the wrong section!! =(
really ugly !!! The front looks good, but the BACK !!!
vga is great, but the screen isnt bigger than others, why ? and does it still have just 64000 colors ?
The cpu is good, but this is no real milestone, and really uggly design sorry. Reminds me of the ugly corners of the touchcruise.
But you are all right, this is all definitly wrong here.
hohoho
LG KC1 is Marvell Monahans 806 MHz CPU
I think it's beautiful all the way. The back is painted with an optical illusion that it looks like a diamond, where in fact it's just flat. Brilliant!
Have you guys ever heard of buzz marketing?
This is exactly what this DaVince boy is doing.
I hope for him that he makes some good money out of this.
BTW the HTC Diamond brings in some step changes and not the quantum leap he alluded to.

HTC Touch Diamons hands-on : http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/06/htc-touch-diamond-hands-on/

This is a continuation of the Touch series. There is no QWERTY slide out keyboard.
Enough to make me not buy it, sadness.
does HTC fix the video driver problem with the Diamond?
I was thinking of buying a Diamond for Mother's Day for my wife who is enjoying her Wizard. I was assuming that the video performance problem that exists with the Touch, the Kaiser, the Athena, etc., etc. is fixed in the Diamond, but I'd like to be sure.
My Wizard and my Cingular 2125 perform better than my Tilt and my Athena. By perform better, I mean screen redraws; doing things like changing orientation, or using the Camera, or scrolling in a web page, are painfully slow on the Tilt and the Anthena. I don't own a Touch, so I don't know first hand, but I believe the Touch is listed on http://www.htcclassaction.org/.
Since the Diamond is in the Touch family, I am concerned that it will have the same video performance issues. I'm not up enough on which chipset use which drivers.
Does anyone know if HTC has fixed the video driver problem in the Diamond?

like the looks, like the 4G of internal mem. but there is nothing about a micro sd slot on the site and 4g is simply not enough.

32GB, X7510 replacement early 2009?

Some recent unconnected bits of information on the web have got me thinking that sooner or later there will be another iteration of the Athena series, an x7520 if you will.
First, on Engadget/Engadgetmobile, there was the blog on
How would you change HTC's Advantage X7510?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/08/how-would-you-change-htcs-advantage-x7510/
Then there are the regular posts about new HTC projects with new code names, for instance, HTC QUAR100:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/09/08/the-htc-quar100-a-north-american-exclusive/
Then finally, even though it hasn't been announced, Samsung is now making 1.0 inch form factor SSD's, and they are not sata, but pata devices (like the 1.0 microdrives). The largest is 32gb, which trumps the x7510's 16gb:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productList.do?fmly_id=161
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productInfo.do?fmly_id=161&partnum=MCCOE32GZMPP
I'd wager that a successor will be announced around the CES show next year.
All I can say, is that it better have great video performance and the joystick back.
What do you think?
What do I think ???
I don't think there would be any replacement for the HTC Advantage. Why? It is not selling well because of their stupid decision to remove the buttons and joy stick control. Not to mention, the only thing they changed is the keyboard and flash memory. No provider wants to carry it. The only phone operator I read offering the X7510 is TMobile Germany. Even at the country of it's origin, it barely made news when released. The only thing that will save the X7510 at this point is if HTC gave it to phone operators at a very cheap price. Which I suggest they should do now rather than let it sit in their storage due to better models coming out with better specs.
I am sorry to admit this... but I think this is the end for our babies with 5 inch screens. Which I hope won't be the case. I believe a better move on their part is to update the HTC Universal.
I think you have some valid points.
Many of the comments on 'How you would change the x7510' on the Engadget thread mentioned lack of joystick and OK buttons. Major mistake on HTC's parts.
So really there are three options:
HTC abandons the format
HTC introduces one more model with 32GB SSD, joystick or not.
HTC introduces a similar form factor, but totally new design.
I believe that they will at least do the 32GB option, as they don't have to change any hardware.
I would prefer the following changes atleast.
1. More slimmer device.
2. Change the old PXA270 processor to PXA310.
3. Newer phones come with 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM.
Hopefully they will change those too in the new model.
4. Windows Mobile 7
6. Support 800*480 Resolution.
--Srini
Heres what I would improve:
1. Remove the buttons on the face, and make the screen larger (stretch in to the corners of the device. Put the removed buttons on the sides or top of the device.
2. Higher res screen 800x480 ?
3. Larger microdrive, 64GB atleast.
4. Full size SD-card lot, maybe even two.
5. Make the device slimmer.
6. Slide out keyboard (portrait).
7. Newer generation and faster CPU (800MHz ?) / GPU (NVidia ?) combo.
8. 300MB RAM (atleast)
9. 512MB ROM (atleast)
10. Better camera with atleast VGA @ 30 FPS recording.
11. Make a docking station for the device in portrait. With the headphone out and USB host in front and the rest on the back. Dont forget support to charge a second battery.
So what do you guys think ?
1. Put vibrate back in.
2. Change screen aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 (would make it easier to hold like a phone and would give us full-page-width browsing, video)
3. Give us a private speaker so we don't have to carry BT all the time.
4. Put the buttons and joystick back.
5. Include chipset for WiMax.
Yeah what he said plus what I said makes it the almost perfect PDA.
there is something in the works that i know of but i dont know if u would consider this a athena successor. cant give details though.
Now why did you do that ? Common tell us something ! Just anything !

nope. not any one of those. these devices the public doesnt know about.
Well then thats something to look forward to.
Nope the magic words "screen isn't as big" and I loose all interest.
The biggest appeal to me for the Athena is the 5 inch screen.
I would however like it slimmer and a full size sd slot.
With the joystick back, a slimmer unit and a full size sd slot it would be near the perfect device for me.
I don't think HTC will simply abandon Athena form factor. For one thing it looks that MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) will be a popular thing next year and for me Athena is a true MID and for now the best MID.
So what I'm hoping for is that HTC will come up with a new MID device sometime in 2009, that could be a successor to Athena, hopefully with WM7 (I have a silly idea that WM7 will be released together with Win7 sometime in June/July) and with 5" WVGA screen, new faster CPU and more storage...

Pawel,
I know Blackstone is not quite a replacement for the 5 inch screen, but it has FM radio, and faster HSDPA speed. I'm quite keen to go for this. However, if there is something better in the pipeline, I might wait.
I like Blackstone's form factor, but was disappointed with its mere 3.8 inch screen. Of course there are also other disappointments such as the lack of joystick, tv-out, small built-in storage, but the biggest disappointment is the small size.
I hope the replacement model that you have been told retains the 5 inch screen, latest HSDPA, wimax, have embedded earpiece, and similar form factor as blackstone (ie slim and light). Am I likely to be disappointed?

What about the HTC 8290? If the specs are correct, it's like the Touch HD, except it's got WiMax and TV-out. The lack of TV-out on the Touch HD is a big disappointment to me. I would have bought the HD instantaneously had it had this feature. If the 8290 does have it, and has both WiMax and HSPA, it seems very attractive to me.
Regarding the Advantage, I believe they will keep the form factor because as stated above, MIDs are coming and the Advantage really is pocketable and light enough compared to many other MID offerings. If I were HTC I'd wait for WM 7, and probably use the Tegra APX2500 processor.

Pawel,
Thanks for your info. I guess I would go for Blackstone as an interim device while waiting for the ultimate Athena replacement. I thought I could live with a 4 inch (and 3.8 inch is close to that) screen, but after making up a prototype and played with it, I don't think the screen is big enough yet. May be 4.5 at the very minimum. I had played with the iPhone and just don't like the small screen. Too much zooming in and out when surfing the net and that drives me nut after a while.
Sigh... May be Athena as it is now is still the best, even when compared to Blackstone.

yea, i dont mind the 3.8in screen. i have the iphone 3g and have gotten used to the zooming bc of the multitouch. afaik, there isnt anything with a screen bigger than that of the blackstones coming out anytime soon unless theres something in the works that i dont know about.

Distinguishing between a genuine G1 and a fake one? (CECT G1)

Hi all,
Basically I would like to buy a second hand G1 seeing as the price has come down to a reasonable level recently. But I am very worried about being duped into buying a fake one, as the fake one - CECT G1, looks exactly like the real one even down to the box.
So let's say if I am buying from eBay, what should I look for to distinguish whether a particular G1 is real or fake?
Suggestions welcome.
Many thanks.

usually when you're buying from ebay you can trust a seller with good rep. if they say it's genuine, then 9.7 times out of 10 it is. Just make sure you ask if it's genuine and not the cect rip off one. If you some how get a fake and you have documentation that they verified it was real you can always dispute. I don't think there is any way to tell its fake if someone over ebay is really malicious and wants to sell you a fake as a real. you can't hold the device until you get it and they can tell you whatever you want. As for purchasing in person, I've never seen a fake G1 so who knows how close it is to the real deal. And as always, if the price is too good to be true, it usually is a fakey. just my 2 centavos.
Ive seen 1 CECT G1, it was a young gentleman in my tmobile store...
The first thing I noticed was the camera isnt under the shield inside the cover, its positioned right above it in the corner...
Also, NO SLIDING KEYBOARD.and the theme they use sucks...
Other than those obvious things...looked like a legit g1 until he showed me it couldnt slide....
I wonder if they are able to be rooted....and have roms put on them...I probably would buy one just to be able to Test roms with.
Oh wow, didn't know the fake one doesn't have a keyboard.
That would be a good tell-tale sign!

Oh well, sometimes the fake phones out of china are more advanced and developed..like those with the 2 sim card slots, Tv/FM radio, touch screen, (come with 2 batteries), GPS, WiFi, BT, full qwerty and also a slider, etc, etc...no clue what OS is on those though. But I wouldnt mind a bootleg G1 with dual Sim cards, dual Micro SDHC, a Digital tuner for HDTV, etc, etc if it could still use our Roms =) and had the slide out keyboard. Would probably have a more advanced processor too.
It is funny though that they would not add the full keyboard and just make it look like it. Seems like they went to more trouble than it was worth. They could have just Bootlegged the Magic or Sapphire and not worry about a keyboard at all.
Engadget did an article on this kirf phone. It isn't even running Android, so good luck putting ROMS on it.
Here is a link to a kirf phone that will supposedly have a genuine Android OS.
Here is the article talking about the fake G1 and fake Android OS
the fake android phones run an os called nucleus os which is basically a phone os for mtk processors that sells for $15,000 for unlimited licensing. cheap when you're making hundreds of thousands of handsets and putting the same os on all of them. the os is skinnable, and it's responsible for all your fake chinese ipod, iphone, android, and almost anything with a touchscreen coming from china.
One would ask, why fake android if android is open source? well, android is a fatty. while nucleus os might fit in a 32mb nand, you can't cram android (an usable one anyway) in anything less than 64mb nand. most of those phone's mtk processors come with built-in storage, and nucleus happens to fit in them, so the maker saves money by using less components (i've had a few of those phones, you open them, and there's hardly anything in those pcbs), really, those phones cost about 30 dollards to make (maybe less) and they sell them for 100-200, that's a profit right there.
---edit---
android /system requires at least 64 mb memory (and that's removing some apks), i forgot to mention you still need /boot, /data, and other folders, so anything less that 128mb nand wont do

+1000 points to you, sir.
lol look through the specs
http://g1-clone-phone-review.com/
In terms of the screen, the G1 has a better screen resolution while the CECT G1 has a higher color depth. It even has an FM radio, stereo bluetooth as a standard and more... maybe the G1 could learn a few things from this look a like.
You guys should look through this site...
http://www.china-mobile-phone.com/
Also, mods, I am not advertising nor endorse this site, in fact I encourage no one to purchase these kinds of phones. They are not certified and are potentially even dangerous. Please just look through it for your pleasure
I mean, seeing some of those phones even tempts me to buy them. They have Wi-Fi, bluetooth, FM radios, TV tuners, TV outs, actual cameras with optical zoom (Click on Zoomer lense on the side to see them, they are actually pretty cool looking.) However, if only it would be possible to put our own operating system on them. The current ones are well, very ugly and simple. Basically, the phones hardware has a lot of potential...
Also to add, my friend actually has one of these phones, it has a 3 inch touch screen, 3 MP camera, dual sim card, etc. It looked pretty cool, the screen was decent, resolution was bit low at 320x240, but that is because I have been spoiled by the screen on my G1. However, now everytime even if the phone is just dropped from a small height, it shuts off. So I guess you get what you pay for? They look cool without a doubt though... maybe for those people who are on a tight budget but still need a more than typical functioning device.
Some very interesting insight there Jubeh.
Do you work in this industry?

Funny you say that SolemnWishing, because one of the reasons I didn't go for a G1 in the first place was the resolution. It is way too low compared to my Diamond and Diamond2 >__<

Are you kidding me? That thickness for those specs is ridiculous. The extra thickness is in the KEYBOARD, if that's gone then it's not hard to put those features into the body. If you have to wire the keyboard in it suddenly gets much harder. 17.1mm and the large body is horrible. THE TOUCH PRO 2 has that thickness... AND it has a CURVED back in order to make it feel SMALLER in hand.
//Just trying to get my point across, no offense.
OP, the chances that you get scammed by a reputed seller is very little. I really don't think it is something to worry about so much. Also notice that the trackball on the CECT doesn't have the same texture as the original.
If there was a way to install APK's on this clone, I would absolutely buy one. I would use it to play around with and try to mod. I bought an ADP because I knew I would be too chicken **** to mod a $300 phone.

Well, the G1's resolution when scaled down to the size of the screen if very very average, and the color depth is just flat out disappointing. Look at the new Sidekick LX's with a screen with 850 x 480 pixel resolution, that just blows the G1 away. And one thing I have noticed about the screen on the G1, when looking at pictures, the colors just don't feel alive. They don't feel vivid or bright or saturated enough. I have a Sony Ericsson w580i, your basic slide phone, and the colors are way better looking on that.

The new Lemfo Lem X

Check this new Android Smartwatch from Lemfo go AliExpress Lemfo store or google it for Lemfo Lem X just I will give some of the specifications; design like the Lem 7 but removable straps, 2.03 inches full around Amoled display, the SoC mtk6739 with power VR GPU, 1/16 Gb, Bluetooth 4.2 , 4G capability , better camera and Android 7.1, but not Bluetooth calling feature, to bad.
It’s in presell right now .
Bigger is better
Once again, AliExpress is a bit sloppy with the details.
From the "Item Specifics": battery 450mAh, camera 5MP
From the "Product Description": battery 900 mAh, camera 8MP.
Which is correct?
900Mah and the price went down
The watch looks promising but I do not trust the render pictures. On official pictures the Lem7 is almost bezelless but in reality there is a big bezel. If the watch has also such a bezel and a 2inch screen it will be huge...
If it’s like that I will cancel the order, I don’t think that they will do like that because the Lem 7 has a lot feedback about it, will see
I bought one on pre sale. Specs are really good! Can’t wait!! Game changer compared to other watches!
Replaceable straps, nice resolution, big screen, nice cpu. Like it!

https://www.omnicalculator.com/othe...ght_res:640,width_res:590,diag_size:2.03!inch
428.8ppi density
one more other things no buttons so i am wandering , beside the red one on the left side, maybe power on/off
Think the button is a “home button” have to wait for a review on youtube for real life experience. All we got now is the rendered images from alieexpress(photoshopped)
But it’s only 140 euro. So worth a gamble
Didn’t get the flat tire remark, but you are right, comes due to the resolution. Hopefully there are some nice dials, so it won’t be that obvious.

yeah thats what i said is a monster device in RASC forums roundandroidsmartwatched proboard,go over there be a member nice peoples, but remember those chinese peoples have smaller wrist. you know the style is identical to the moto 360
Why do they never implement NFC payments?!
Such great specs, but for lack of NFC. I know QR code payments are the most common in China, but why not add this feature and broaden the appeal of the watch?
I'm not familiar with these smartwatches - from the description it appears that you can install apps from the Play store... is this correct?
LEM X question
Any one know the strap size?
Who every has one, want are you getting on the average for battery life?
not in market yet, we will know everything after august 28

This companies, not being racist or anything, they think of the market margins....2 billion people/customers in China vs, what, about 700 million in Europe. That's how Huawei started and that's why they toped Samsung on sales.
There are more people that can afford a £100 watch then a £300 one.
It won't cost more to add NFC and Bluetooth calling but it takes time to implement the software feature and to sort the bugs, as all the developers on this site will know.
This componies there are about quantity and new models as soon as possible.
What they do is watch the big companies watch/phone tech leaks and they will try to implement them first. 1 penny plus 1 penny makes 8.7 trillion $.
Lemfo lem x screen bubble
I just got my watch and like it but I seem to have a type of air bubble in the top left of the screen, has anyone else had this and if so can I fix or do I need a replacement.
Cheers

New Nook Glow Light 4

I just got back from B&N and the employees have a spec sheet for the NEW Nook Glow Light 4 (yes they are calling it NGL4). I got a peak at the spec sheet and it's a 6" model but no release date yet. Anyone have any information on the new Nook? Also noticed the current 6" Nook Glow Light Plus was out of stock. I was thinking about getting a 7" Kobo Libra 2, might have to wait...
Did you see if they are using the same old tired processor that they've been using, the iMX6SL?
Any mention of what Android version?
You might want to take a look at the Onyx Poke 3 if you are in the market for a 6".
They also have 7", 7.8", 10.3", 13.3"
https://www.boox.com/
The spec sheet had basic info. Nothing on the hardware. More of an educational info for employees.
Stopped by B&N today to see if the new Nook Glowlight 4 has been released or a release date. No, according to the B&N employees the release date has been pushed back to mid December. I asked if I can take a pic of the spec sheet but no. Additional info from their employee only info (basic spec):
Screen size: 6", 300ppi
Weight: 6oz
Storage: 32g
Battery: will read multiple weeks on single charge.
Buttons: on bezel
CPU: No info on employee spec sheet
Cores: No info on employee spec sheet
B&N just made it official: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/nook-glowlight-4-barnes-noble/1140326110?ean=9780594149293
It's available December 8th for $150.
Wow, I remember when a new Nook model would have people falling over each other to comment. I guess B&N has faded into insignificance. Maybe they concentrated too much on selling ebooks and didn't make a viable device? It remains Kindle for the walled community, Kobo for Linux-based and Onyx for Android. Although there are tons of other brands too.
If that Gentoo keyword you scrapped hunting around for information is any kind of indication it seems that Nook might be on course of shifting toward Linux like Kobo, Pocketbook etc already are. It might be that B&N is trying to copy more closely Kindle approach toward these kind of devices because it also is Linux albeit much more heavily modified and walled off. Good thing is that Gentoo is stable binary compiled distro as far as I remember that should be stable albeit maximum user unfriendly but I presume that it will work reliably on default settings or as designed and with minimal amount of storage/memory space required. Question is did they put an Android layer on top of it?
No, it's all Android. I think "Gentoo" is just their idea of "Generation Two" as in the first series out of Netronix to not use the NXP iMX6SL.
I've already run the reader out of the new Nook on my cell phone. It's all Android.
"Barnes & Noble chief James Daunt said the company planned to "reinvigorate" the Nook line in the months and years ahead — this may just be one of the opening salvos."- Engadget
Will be curious to see what they mean by that...

LOL. It seems like a very nice reader. I note simplicity (no Bluetooth, etc.). And, with Oreo, difficult to root, which means difficult to add anything. But probably a very nice reader.
If I remember well enough Oreo is first version of Android that tried to implement some reasonable resources management like memory usage etc. So that is a good thing. Bad is all versions above 4 start to introduce more and more quirky stuff going further away from initial AOSP. So there is no wonder that projects like LineageOS spawn of as result of that practice. It might be harder to root/hack yet since it is older version of Android who knows. Unlike before they abstain from going with some radical new hardware/software stuff implemented. Device characteristics are textbook example of middle road and targeting most ubiquitous hardware characteristics on the market or in other words best selling models. If it is so then only trump card that they could have under the sleeve is better software. We'll see...

Yeah, I'm scratching my head over this. It's hard to be sure about the hardware specifications when you're only looking at the system software. It looks like this has the same RTL8723DS as found in the Glow 7.8. That does 2.4 GHz (only) WiFi and Bluetooth.
In any case, B&N really fell down on promoting this. Why didn't they put "Coming soon" before Black Friday?
So like a NST which theoretically could but in reality does not have bluetooth? I totally missed that one. Oh and there were hints before that they will put another e-ink reader on the market but it was mixed with half-truths and disinformation. It was stated they will partner with Lenovo for e-ink reader and in the end it turned out that they did partnered with Lenovo but for tablet format.
My very first E-Ink device was a Nook Simple Touch. I'm one of those who jumped right in to comment whenever B&N had a new device on offer! I love my Onyx Boox Note Air 2, but I am curious about this new GL 4. Nostalgia, maybe? I wonder if it will be as easy to root as earlier GL devices?

Yeah, the Onyx are pretty nice, aren't they? I'm loving my Poke3.
I already have a root exploit for the new Glow. I may even buy one to see how it works. I'm crazy about the yellow "Daffodil" cover. I don't know whether it will fit my Poke3.
I have nothing smart to say. Just thanks to Renate for making my day. Having root exploit for device that is yet to hit the market is awesome. It made me chuckle so hard that my glasses almost fell off my head.
I ordered one Monday night. It's already shipped. It should be here by Friday.
I ordered one yesterday as well. B&N estimates that mine will arrive on Thursday.
My GL4 arrived not long ago. It looks similar to the GL 3 of a few years ago. There does not appear to be a way to turn on Developer Settings as there was with the GL 3, which could make rooting the device more challenging. It has page turn buttons - nirvana for some people. It downloaded an update as soon as I turned it on! It's light and easy to hold. Warm/cold light is easily adjustable. Good impressions so far.
Edit: When I connect the GL4 to my Mac, it shows up as a Nook drive (no surprise there) but only 5.36GB. This device has 32GB of internal storage. Looks like B&N may have partitioned the free space once again. Yes, that's still a decent amount of space, but why not have access to all the free space on the device? (Probably in an attempt to guard against rooting...)
Oops, I did it again.
