I made the jump and I'm in Navigating bliss! - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

I sat home yesterday trying to decide if I should make the move and pick up a x7501. Compusa had 3 of them in stock in Delaware and the customer service rep I spoke to on the phone said they were priced at $899. Spending that kind if money a couple days before Christmas would definitely get me in trouble. I spent half the day looking at youtube videos of ppl reviewing this ultimate gadget freak toy. I read and re-read threads all over this board some good some bad.
At about 5:00 I decided it was time to go get my fix. Compusa is 45 miles away and I made the trip in traffic in less than 30 minutes. I walked into Compusa $899 in hand (no tax in DE) excited and anxious, weaving through the gift givers with nothing but contempt. GET OUTTA MY WAY I NEED MY FIX! I'm at the cell phone counter looking for a sales rep, cause I know what I want and I want it now. No need to look around no need to browse. All the dealers are busy so I decide to play with the store model until I can get help. I then come out of my tunnel vision to realize that this Compusa is going out of business and the Advantage is marked 30% off. OMG! $899 down to $629. OK no more waiting for a rep I need this thing now! I grab a rep, drop my $629 and I'm out.
My decision (see my other thread) to get the Advantage was based on 2 things. 1: GPS and 2: 3G Internet. I need a GPS unit and I wanted features comparable to the Garmin 760 but did not want to spend that kind of money on a device that did one thing well. Navigating. I use Garmin XT on my Tilt now and the 400mhz can't draw the map fast enough for everyday GPS use, plus the screen is not big enough. With 3G this is the perfect set up for me. I got my corporate email while on the road, VPN access, contacts and calender, virtually unlimited note pad, traffic updates, word, excel, pdf's and while I'm waiting for Verizon to show up to a vendor meet, I got Orb. I'm in gadget bliss right now.
For the price I paid and for what I need, the Advantage ($629) kills the Garmin 760 ($699.99). Thanks guys you helped me alot and I am very very satisfied!
BTW I don't recall anyone saying how crisp and clear the screen looks. This 5" VGA looks amazing while navigating. Now I just need a mount.

trip to te UK

Hi,
I'm going for a short trip to London (sept 2007) a few day's walking in this beautiful city, and of course the Ameo will joins me to use as guide or take some pictures.
My questions are:
- Are there any recommendations for external power for the Ameo, I mean?
when I’m there you do a lot of things with the device (picture's tom-tom e.t.)
this will use the battery a lot in one day, I’m thinking to buy a spare battery
or an external battery, what is the best option so far?
- Some of you come from the UK self, are there some interest places in London to go to take some pictures?.
Thanks A Lot..
just buy a 2dollar US->UK adaptor and charge it at hotel or wherever.
surely you're not going to walk around with Ameo using it to direct you at every street corner ? i.e. have it on all day.
personally, i'd leave the Ameo at home, take a decent camera instead, and use a free 'tube' map to walk around and see the sights. No they're not 100% geographically accurate, but its hard to get lost using them.
This way, you might see some of London, rather than just the ameo screen
Check out the Millenium wheel, or London eye! Worth the trip, book in advance.
While your down there, St Pauls, Houses of Parliament (Big Ben) and Tate Modern are all nearby...(Try the slide in the Tate!, google it)
By all means go to Oxford street, but that and Totenham Court road are a waste of time now. Nothing but overpriced tourist traps that you would do well to avoid buying things in.
Check out a show in the West End, Visit Harrods in Knightsbridge, walk along Hyde Park and there is the Science Museum in Kensington (Exhibition Road). There are also about 3 other museums around that area. You can see the 10,000 year clock in the Science museum.
Go to Nottinghill Gate on a Sunday Morning and check out the Antiques Market/Street fair.
Above all, get an OYSTER card and pre-pay on it, will save you LOADS of money. Use the bus where you can so you dont miss the sights. London isnt actualy that big and the tube is hot dirty overpriced and you miss everything above ground.
If you wanna share some Ameo software give me a shout, im a London Local.
Don't catch the Tube, you'll see nothing! (It's underground) Plus your Ameo won't pick up a signal down there. London Busses are fantastic! They go everywhere and they're really cheap. It takes some working out, but once you figure out how to read the bus map at most bus stop, then you'll never look back. Best seat is the front of the top deck. If you like roller coasters, catch the No. 23.
I agree, get the Oyster card first.
Also, if you're interested in graffiti. Head to the Brick Lane Markets. There's a stall there selling a guide book to Banksy street art. The book contains a number of walking tours with GPS references for each piece of graffiti! Perfect for your Ameo!

Some place are worth pre-booking, London Eye has big queues and you can circumvent at least the ticket buying one by pre-booking (may even be cheaper I can't recall.)
Tate modern slide installation - you need to book timed tickets for that if you wnat to go on a big slide, not my thing and may actually have finished by now. If you do go and artistically inclined there is a neat (and free) modern art gallery carrying a little picasso and dali.
My recommendation would be to get one of the tour buses first (open top for good weather!) Get on one with a live commentary if you can. It will help orient you. They do offer discounted tickets that beat the queues for many big attractions. Bus tickets allow hop on and off at landmarks over a 24 hour period. Then you can go back and visit in detail the things you want to see.
Thinking about what else do you normally like to do, that might help you decide what you like to see in london, parks, museums, landmarks, hard rock cafe etc. How much do you want to pay or not.
One of the places I love in London is the free British library - you can see original manuscripts from many famous people like leonardo da vinci - a real connection with the past.
hi everybody,
Thanks for the info , i'll will take the info for my trip.
The Oyster card is indeed an great tip! i'll certainly buy one.
Should it be a smart decision if I buy a pre-paid card from T-mobile to use it for GPRS?,
my current provider in the Dutch is T-mobile but to use it from other country's it's expensive.
Thanks
Buy an Orange Payg card.
If you get a GPRS data card (not 3g) you can pay £1 gbp for all day GPRS unlimited data.
You can get the card for as little as £1 from some shops, I think orange store itself charges up to £5
Not sure on how T-Mob do payg data.
I dunno about London being a nice place - there are plenty of other 'better' European Cities. But as a tourist, you should enjoy yourself!
London is pretty easy to get around - Id recommend an A-Z on London, or just get hold of a detailed map. Id go with the Oyster Card as well, just saves so much hassle queuing for tickets e.t.c. and its cheaper. The Underground is OK providing you're not travelling at Rush-Hour, but its true, you don't get to see things. Ideal if you need to get to a certain bit of London though.
I wonder if anyone does a USB connected Solar Cell - you could stick it to a backpack and trickle charge your Ameo whilst your walking around. Its something I've thought about.
RE the data connection, see if T-mob do a free/discounted access deal on Wifi access points - there are LOADS of them in London and most allow access from Partners. I've got a BT Openzone agreement, which i've used all over the UK (including T-Mob AP's) and in France.

One problem - you need Sun!
Alternative I've seen are "mobile recharging stations" appearing in Easy Internet shops and the like. They have a bunch a small lockers each with a selection of recharging cables. I guess it costs money though.

Ears prick up "France" did you say.
Where abouts did you go? Im heading to the South of France on a work trip very soon so would be interested in how it was using your phone out there.
When i got my Ameo the nice chap who served me mentioned i could text a number and get a username and password to access Wifi hotspots in Mcdonalds, Starbucks etc
Gonna give it a go tonight. Apparently its what you'd normally pay £10 a month for.
Happy with that!
I only went to Calais for the day, to stock up on supplies
Didn't use the 'phone' part, simply because I'd not got it internationally enabled, but did manage to jump on to several wifi points around Calais, at the terminal e.t.c. without difficult. So Useful to have Tomtom Western Europe Map installed! And quite good standing on the deck on the ferry and tracking where we were in the channel! The ferry does about 21mph don't u know?
I've got a BT Openzone subscription as I'm out and about a lot, but I'm gonna cancel it when my 12months is up.

So many purchase problems, now I am thinking iphone

I have tried unsuccessfully to purchase a Wing twice now. Last night I made a bid on a third one, however so much time has passed since I have been trying to get one that I am now out of time. I lost my phone last week and need a new one by Wednesday. In order to get my phone I will have to overnight it for early arrival on Wednesday. The total cost now puts me close to 400 which is the neighborhood of an iphone. When the iphone first came out I swore it was the phone for me but I wasn’t going to spend 600 for it. They have dropped in price to 399 for the 8 gig phone. I am going to have to unlock the phone though for T-mobile service which scares me a bit. I kept pretty close tabs on the whole unlock the iphone saga when it was first being done and it seemed that there was a pretty high failure rate at that time. A quick check on eBay reveals that there are a plethora of unlocked iphones for sale which tells me that they have perfected the process. So now I am at a cross roads. I can get the iphone tomorrow from an Apple store or AT&T’s stores. The Wing will have to be sent overnight if I can convince the seller to drop everything and run down to a FedEx office. So given the pros and cons of the purchase I see a pretty close match. Maybe I should be looking at the phones themselves. The processor on the iphone is way more powerful and so is the storage space. The thing I don’t like about the iphone is that it’s a mac which means I may have issues getting software for it on the open market. Then again it’s a seriously popular device and people may be writing all sorts of tools and software for it. It doesn’t have a dedicated keyboard either which I liked about the wing. So given the choice, should I seriously stick with the Wing or should I make the switch to the iphone? Opinions count but I would like to hear some concrete facts about the differences if I am to make a logical decision. Thanks in advance.
Have you considered you can walk into a Tmobile Store and get a wing for $349?
You talk about walking into an Apple Store vs. having a Wing shipped to you.... and that seems to be the deciding factor on which phone you're going to get. If you walk into a Tmobile store, you can get a Wing for $350 plus tax .... and if you walk into an Apple store, you can get an iPhone for $399 plus tax.
actually I cant get the wing for 349. It's a real pisser and if that was true I would have done that a week ago. I lost my phone (V3 Razor) about a week ago. The first thought that came to mind was go to T-mobile and get a new phone. My second thought was to upgrade into something like the Wing. I didn't know it existed at the time, but I thought that it would be a nice iPhone substitute at 350 since I believed the iphone to be 600. As it turns out I am 10 months away from my contract ending with T-mobile. I am 8 months away from qualifying for any T-mobile phone rebates. The Wing is 499 retail with 100 instant rebate and 50 mail in all of which require 2 additional years of contract. T-mobile will not allow me to extend my contract until I am 2 months or less from my current contract expiration. So to that end and to your point, the phone is not 350 to me it is 499 to me. That is why I started my search on eBay. I thought then as I think now, I can get a better deal on the Wing through eBay. However, I had the damnedest luck on this particular auction. I bid and won my first auction about 5 days ago and have not heard 1 word from the seller regarding the close of the auction. I believe he died and luckily I hadn't sent him any money. Maybe someday I will hear from the guy but at this point he wont respond to any emails nor has he complained about me not paying for the auction. I decided to try again and won a second auction for 255 on the wing. Great deal I thought until I actually paid for the auction only to find out that he already sold the phone to another party as well as collecting payment from me too. Now I have to deal with that big pile of crap but I still need a phone. So here I am needing to win yet another auction for my wing or I can just go to an At&t store and pick up the iphone.
Tough decision to make, one that i considered also. A couple of things to note first is:
Longevity: Remember iphone 2.0 is already in the works and might drop by the end of next year. Also remember T-Mobile's 3g service should start seeing implementation beginning next year. So now the question is, how long are you planning on keeping this phone? Another thing to consider is resale value if you opt to get another phone next year. I would assume an iphone in great condition should have a higher resale value over time than the wing.
Specs: iPhone is more powerful than Wing and also has more storage, has a multitouch display that is larger and with higher resolution.
UI and OS: iPhone beats Wing hands down for STOCK UI and OS, athough it is an unfair advantage. Apple made OSX on the iPhone from the ground up. It only has one platform to work with whereas WM6 is created to be cross-platform and work for different SP, PPC, and PDA that all have different specs and components. Although the dev comm definitely did an outstanding job of making wm6 more user friendly, and with upgrades to wm6 like Shadows's UI and Android around the corner, we'll see how this develops.
Dev. Community: Apple is releasing a SDK for iPhone early next year, so you should start seeing software for iPhone given enough time. Wing has an established dev comm as you can see - xda (The best!), modaco, howardforums, and others.
Apple vs. Microsoft: Which is the lesser of two evils?
Warranty: unlock your iPhone and you just voided your warranty. At least with wing something happens to it, you should be able to have T-Mobile help you in some way. At least, i would think.
Personally, i'm happy with my Wing. It might be no iPhone, but then again no other is. It's the little device that could, and while there are more powerful phones on the market, it still holds it own. Plus i like the idea that i can abuse it more than the iPhone. I feel HTC makes quality phones and i can't wait to see if T-Mobile releases HTC Touch Cruise for its 3g service (please, please, please). Plus, it's not a F'ing Sidekick! lol.
Unless you are in dire need of a pda phone right now, i would buy a cheap phone for the time and wait until the next round of pda phones come out. Take a look at the ATT tilt, for instance, much more powerful than the wing and im sure we'll see a price drop pretty quick.
Have you considered this?
http://www.fatwallet.org/forums/messageview.php?catid=18&threadid=733578
This is where I bought my wing, when the price was $49 after rebate, now it's $79 with free bluetooth headphone. You do need to sign-up another one year contract (no activation fee, free 2-day shipping) with Tmobile though, but you can combine your twon lines to a family plan and save some $$.
contract
unless you are within 2 months of your current contract expiring, you can not renew your contract with tmobile. Your account must be 60 days to contract expiration before you can get any rebates or discounts applied to your phone. I have mentioned that twice so far. It's a very important tip to pass on and to keep in mind with your own upgrade decisions in the future. If I qualified for any sort of assistance I would have bought the wing long ago.
FYI..I ended up with 3 failed auctions for the wing. Very strange situatation to say the least. In the end I went with the iphone but I am starting to wonder if that was a wise choice considering all the trouble I have had with it over the last week. I attempted for 48 hours straight to hack the iphone for use on t-mobile service. Apple has released an update sometime last month that pretty much locks the phone down for the next couple of weeks or months. Someone will surely figure out a way around it but for now its damn near impossible. I decided to sign up with att service and only after a week of fooling with this phone did I finally get it working today. About 6 hours after finally getting the phone up and running did I discover that it doesnt have VOIP support. Now at first glance that might seem like a meaningless attribute but this was the primary reason for me starting this little adventure of phone upgrading. I am going to start a new thread because I have more to tell and need help in making a choice.
if you use your phone almost like laptop then you won't like the iPhone. You will for for a little while till the wow factor wares off. It's definately pretty and very nice with all its tricks but the simple things it cant do. Some 3rd party apps attempt to fix this but it doesnt work all too well.
You'll take things for granted such as browsing to a site to download something and email it as an attatchment to someone or yourself.

First impressions on Voda UK from Android noob

Thought I would just give my two pence on the Legend, just got one for the wife, I'm sticking with my Touch Pro2 Didn't see an "I GOT MINE" thread but if there is one I apologise.
The aluminium body is awesome very impressive and handles well
Nice and fast, no choppiness, bluetooth contacts sync (40 or 50 odd) from my TP2 went through faultlessly and easily (no confirming each one, etc) some lack of copy and paste on gmails, weird that it doesn't come up as a "proper" mail account even though the mails come through fine. Had to SMS my wireless key from TP2, then forward the message so I could copy & paste into wireless settings. Sucks a bit, but I'm used to WinMo goodness Wireless connects fine each time. (TP2 is sometimes a bit flakey connecting with all ROMs at least on my AP) Doesn't know what to do with WM notes files but that's to be expected.
On-screen keyboard is a bit too small for my fingers but no probz for the wife.
Capacitive screen takes some getting used to after using my resistive TP2. Fingernails don't work! hehe booo (and no stylus) Screen is very nice to look, seems brighter and "punchier" than my TP2. (think it's OLED?)
GSM signal doesn't seem as good as my TP2, sometimes you will get "emergency calls only" whereas on my TP2 that is much more rare, particularly since the 4.xx radio upgrades. Still early days yet though.
No video calling which is a minor downer since my TP2 has it, also it doesn't seem to tilt sideways although it comes with Teeter (haven't tried that yet tho) wondering if it really has a tilt sensor or not. Guy in the shop thought it didn't. But it does rotate to landscape when it needs to (camera, etc) so no biggie either way.
The optical scrolly dot below the screen is a nice touch. (particularly as she is paranoid about mucking up the screen until we put screen protector on haha)
Good to see VPN support, haven't tried it yet though. I set up IPSEC/L2TP (ie. the way WinMo demands IPSEC) at home so we will see if Android will play ball with that.
Vodafone branding is almost non-existent from what I can see, definitely not the white and red train wreck I was faced with when I got my Voda TP2 haha
No crashes yet although we did have to reset to factory defaults after a gmail signup issue where it set the primary account to something she didn't want (cos it was failing to create account all over the place, ended up creating on a PC) so had to reset the whole thing Still it wasn't that painful as this was in the first hour or two of getting it.
A nice looking phone she's well happy with it, but then she upgraded from an ancient Samsung flip from like 5 years ago haha It's the first time either of us have really played with an Android phone, she's used to dumbphones but is very tech savvy (for a girl haha ) and I've been using PPC / WinMo for over 10 years.
Personally my first impression is I'm glad I have the TP2 wouldn't trade it for the Legend but she's over the moon with it so everyone's happy If I were to place Android in the market based on a few hours of minor fiddling I would place it between WinMo (power users) and iPhone (hairdressers haha ) in terms of ease of use and capabilities. No plans to hack on it, I'll wait till she gets bored of it first
Got it free on a £20 p/m contract on Vodafone from a Voda store, they threw in a leather case and generic screen protectors without a fight. Were really nice to deal with. 500 meg data, can't remember the rest of the details but will find out if anyone asks. Also it is possible to put a consumer tariff (which this was) on a business account, which I didn't know.
I've just got this deal too and so far I'm very pleased. Although i didn't haggle for a leather case and screen protectors, WHAT A FOOL!

Some tips for you:
1. Show up 15 mins before the shop closes
2. Take a hot chick with you
3. Maybe have a business account with 2 phones already
4. "It comes with x, yeah?"
5. Be cheeky
heheee
I dug the paperwork out and the full details are as follows:
"Free" HTC Legend
100 minutes xnet
500 texts
500 meg data (not listed on receipt but confirmed verbally, I have "VP VMI" on the price plan name, Vodafone Mobile Internet?)
Free case (generic leather vodafone one, £6 worth, she'll change that as I suspect it's not nearly pink or girly enough)
Free screen protectors (the generic vodafone ones u have to cut up, they are a bit crap but will do for now, don't use the mirror ones they make the colours go funny, again she will probably get an invisibleshield or sommet cos she likes mine on the TP2)
Free mobile TV all channels for a month (remember to cancel)
Free 10 tracks a month for one month off the music store (ditto)
Free insurance for a month (may not cancel this ...)
Phone pre-packaged with a memory card, think it's 4 gig
24 month contract
I wasn't giving these guys a hard time at all, salesman was quite happy, it was quite a quick impulse buy although we did a bit of research on the phone and tariffs beforehand. The deal I got was printed up on the wall in the VF store so it's nothing special in that respect. They did mention they were having no problems shifting the Legends
Hope this helps.
That £20 deal is on VF website plus at the moment they offer £150 on Quidco so under £15pm. Mine arrives tomorrow ;-)

Ah man I tried that cashback thing once (not quidco another one) and it just never came through. Couldn't be arsed chasing them over it. Awesome deal that tho.
Crap! Why didn't i get cashback on this beast?
I think i was just wayyy too excited to actually be getting a decent phone. I've been living with a brick for way too long.
I think voda have the legend exclusively and i had my heart set on it, i think the deal is pretty reasonable though and ive had nothing but great signal, web coverage and service so far.
I'm loving my Legend too, I think it is an absolutely cracking phone. I'm also pleased about the minimal Voda branding, all I see is the splash screen on boot, that's it.
I got 300 mins, unlimited texts and 500mb internet for £20 PCM. I actually went for the £20 PCM deal for 100 mins, etc as it seemed enough and was a good enough deal that I didn't feel it worth haggling but when he phoned up to confirm he quoted me the £25PCM deal for £20! I did the honest thing and said that's not what they originally quoted but he said that now he's accidently quoted it they have to offer it - bit random but hey.
Awesome, lucky you. I'm not likely to use more than my hundred mins but might be pushing it occasionally with the 500 texts, we'll see. Also, I agree its nice to see that Vodafone kept the branding to a minimum.
well mines finally arrived and I'm loving. only slight annoyance is voda haven't provided the update to i can get layer and google goggles apps. i read on vf forums its coming soon though.
has anyone debranded ?
I was also slightly annoyed it didn't have the update. But for free apps like Google goggles you can usually find an apk file on the net and install it using sometimg like astro. Not always the the latest version though and you can't update it. I'll upload goggles for you if you can't find it. Haven't tried for layar.

Anyone get their Epic yet? Post here!!

I'm going to pick mine up right now. I had to pay an old debt to sprint and they told me if they run my credit twice within 60 days it'll get flagged for fraud, so I'm hoping that doesn't happen. I don't know if they ran my credit when I payed that debt or not.
Let us know how you like yours!!
I have it since 8:10. I'm transferring the information from my Evo to it. I bought a really cool case with it.
Going to get mine at lunch time. Sprint store is about 6minutes away, hopefully they dont take the other 54min to get me paid and activated.
Yeah. Got mine and rooted it already. Waiting for a nandroid capable recovery and nand unlock. Cases at sprint were not that great. I might stop by bb today or tomorrow and get a screen pro put on it and see if they have better cases. Sprint had a neat dock but obviously you can't dock if you have a case.

They had one at Sprint that I really liked. It was back and hard rubberized. And for 15 bucks. Who could argue? I put it on and it feels REALLY awesome.
How's the battery life?
Can you make it two days without a charge?
-----just kidding..
Congrats to you early adopters! Good luck with it and looking forward to ALL the mini-reviews.

I have to wait til after work tonight. I hope there is still stock. Going to the Sprint store first to get my wife to see if she likes it. Then to Best Buy to get the instant rebate. If she likes it I have to wait til November. If not then I will swap devices asap!

Same here. Another person was there picking up the Epic, but other than that, we were alone in the store.
Initial Impressions
Very quick impressions...
Capacative buttons work absolutely FINE.
Going through the menu setting up various things the phone flies.
Email setup is much more of a pain the BB but I expected that and went through the same thing with the EVO
The phone has less of a 3G signal in my office thatn the EVO did but at least it's a solid one bar whereas my 9650 Bold would drop every call. Sprint sent me an Airwave yesterday to use in the office so once I get that up and running I'll be good to go. I have a strong 4g signal at home so I'll try that out this evening.
Absolutely love the screen. If you don't have an EVO sitting next to it for comparison, the screen is plenty big enough.
Keyboard is excellent
I'm guessing it's tyhe rounded corners...the phone is much more comfortable in the hand than the EVO was and for perhaps the same reason, fits much better in the pocket.
Looks great...I sense no "cheapness" factor to it at all.
I'll have more input after I get a chance to really work with it as the day progresses but I'm very happy with the decision to go with this device.
Edit/Delete Message
Further Updates on Call / Sound Quality and GPS:
Having spent the morning on the phone now, I have to say...for someone who wears hearing aids (me), the call quality both on the earpiece in the front and the rear speaker is simply the best I've ever experienced with wither BB or my previous EVO.
Totally impressed and that alone makes this phone worth it to me.
Interestingly, while the EPIC shows only one bar whereas the EVO used to show 2-3 here in my office, the EVO would drop about every third call and the connection was obviously poor. At one bar, the EPIC sounds darn solid.
GPS locked on in seconds from within my office and put me right where I am.
Fired up Sprint Nav, put my house in for a destination and much more quickly than my BB 9650 ever did, it had me on the way home...even though it's not time to go home
Picked mine up at around 8:15
So far loving the keyboard amd how smooth verything seems to be. Sprin had a really cool case with a ruberized back that I decided to buy and so did te other guy getting a epic.
I miss the big screen of the evo. But the samoled screen is definitely an improvement

Picked mine up about an hour ago. I was third in line when the Sprint store opened at 8AM. By the time I left about 20 minutes later, there where at least 6 other people there all wanting the Epic. Purchased all of the available accessories including the Media Dock.
Picked mine up at 8am sharp. Wasn't $350 upfront rather $250 like BB & RS are offering. Asked rep if I had to charge the battery when I got home and said no. Powered it up and it was only 50% charged. Tested GPS with google maps, cold locked right in after I turned on locate in settings. No 4g so far and I live between baltimore and richmond 4g areas, rep said I would have it but I know he was just blowing smoke up my arse about those things. He also kindly advised me that I would be receiving an automated survey call tomorrow and to give their store a 5 out of 1 scoring. I'll think about it.
All in all, pretty pleased with the smothness, minor lag when loading up xda page. Asphalt 5(demo) ran smooth, hardware keyboard has a great feel and good key spacing, and backlit keys are a major plus.
Let the custom ROMS begin!
Just got mine about an hour ago. The only downside is the layout on it but I'm sure some custom ROMS will come soon and I can't root so the wireless tether feature is not there. Overall very nice screen and the touch screen is great. I've only played with it for a half hour so I can't say a whole lot more about it.

It's a guarantee they will, it took 15 minutes for me to buy a car charger the other day.
It took me all of 16 minutes to return the Bold 9650, have them activate the EPIC, check that it worked, buy a case and get out of the store.
I didn't bother to have them set up my email accounts as I'll do it myself.

Corp store on new contract $260+. Dunno if he was trying to hook me up or if corp is trying to compete with BB/RS pricing. I did mention "that's what BB across the plaza is selling it for" and he just mumbled LOL.
Dang! My upgrade iss due tomorrow and I call sprint because I havee reserved a phone from sprint and BB, but sprint doesn't wanna give me the instand rebate and sprint doesn't wanna transfer the upgrade day to today, so I'm screw. F U Sprint!!!!

So, you guys see lines of people waiting?

Just curious if it lived up to all the hype, or if the price poured water on the fire.
I waited in a line of 3 people... they had 10 xooms.
But oh man. Honeycomb is God. Google Music is sexy aswell
There was no line, but one other person showed up to get one while I was checking out shortly after they opened the doors.
So far, I really... really like it... more-so than I was expecting.
Everyone is impressed by Apple's lines for new Apple products, but those are most often picked up at Apple stores, of which there are a very limited number in most cities (often no more than one). I never expected much of a line for the Xoom, but the fact that it's available at so many locations really limits the ability to create those impressive snakes that make it on the news whenever the next iPhone launches. In other words, there's no go-to place to pick up the latest and greatest Android device.
But of course, Motorola so botched this launch, that I don't think the Xoom ever had a chance to really be huge.
Went to my local Verizon store. I was the only one in there buying a Xoom.

I suspect there is still no streaming your home music from home PC to device a la the tech Google acquired from SimplifyMedia? I am tired of using audiogalaxy. I need a streaming solution that differentiates between music and audiobooks.
In BB there was 4 of us picking ours up. In Verizon store no one had bought one yet.
My Best buy was practically empty. The salesman mentioned that someone else had already picked one up, but it was pretty damn quiet there.

I was the first person and only person in line at 10:00am
Andy (Notioninkhacks)
I was the first and only person buying at Costco at about 10:45am.
At the nearest corporate VZ store, I was told I was only the 2nd customer of the day purchasing a Xoom.
However, about an hour after I walked out of the store I got a call from a sales rep that had been reserving a unit for me; she said she was hanging on to the last one they had in the store.
Seeing as how I didn't see much demand, each store must have gotten very few for launch day. The store manager raved about the device though, he said that yesterday the Moto rep had come in to show them all the bells and whistles. The manager looked like a gadget geek, and he was oozing excitement about the tablet.
I called my Best Buy today and they still had the iPhone Verizon launch announcement, from last week.
I went in to demo it in the afternoon - a few people looked at it after me but I didn't see any major push for the device. It was in the laptop section and not very easy to find.
Only 2 at BB at 10am
There was only 2 of us picking up at 10 am. They only had 5 and were all sold day before. I think people are waiting to see what Ipad 2 has to offer.
My Best Buy had 3 sold within an hour of opening (including me).
My bestbuy had 10 of them when i got there..& i was the only 1 at that time picking up the Xoom..the sales guy told me another person had picked up 1 before me ..but he said that everybody had been coming in to see it.
I have three Verizon stores in *close* driving distance, one Apple store. There's not lines because Verizon has more stores. Not to mention Best Buys.
Apple's releases are initially mostly limited to Apple stores, so the get the lines, creates a look of more hype, etc. Apple's a genius at receiving customers to make more hype than there should be.

At the verizon store I was told I was the third one of the day, around noon. They aren't pushing it, there weren't even signs up for it, still iphone stuff everywhere.
I got my pre-order call to pickup my Xoom, I left work drove 40 miles to my best buy and when I got there only to find they sold mine. I was ready to rip this guys off, he called around and found one a few miles away now I have one. Love it but typing this is vary laggy
there weren't any lines at the verizon store near me but their shipment sold out within an hour of opening. i went back later on around 7pm to pick up a case and they told me they shipped more over from another store and they sold those out within 30 minutes.
I was the only one in the VZ store picking one up and now I have to return it for the %25 off one coming from Moto.

I noticed the same thing when posting here on XDA from the Xoom. On another forum, it is fast. Gmail, is also very fast. Seems to be something with XDA and the Xoom browser.
