problems with x7501 - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Hi there, I just bought an x7501 from USA to use in Australia. I have TomTom manually installed with Aussie maps, and I used the guides on this forum to choose the GPS adaptor/port settings and it finds it but never locks onto a signal, ewer. any ideas why?
Also I've noticed when copying files to the microdrive or SD card thru windows explorer it failed 3 times to SD and once to microdrive. After all times the device existed it windows (Mobile Device) but had nothing in it - all folders/mountpoints had dissapeared..
One last thing, I just stuck TCPMP on it, which loads and responds fine, but movies run at full sound speed but 1 frame every 10-15 seconds... any idea why? 624mhz should be plenty.. is there some option i need to change?
otherwise im having lots of fun with this beast of a phone
sera

Update: For TCPMP simply go to Options --> Video Driver --> "ATI IMAGEON" (**NOT** the default "ATI IMAGEON Decoder")
Hope this helps anyone else.. Might add this to the wiki.

I'm not using Tom Tom but a program called Destinator. The only thing I did within Destinator was to set the Port to 4 and the speed to 9600. Everything came up just fine, the same as it had on my Dell Axim x50v just a few months before.
Of course, Maybe you are in the wrong hemisphere? <g>

Okay i thought because the reception in my room was so bad that maybe i couldnt get a lock on.. i went outside and i still get no valid signal but some bars moved and some numbers showed up so that is good.. had to stop testing because it's bird mating season and i was getting swooped.. not goot with a $1000 phone in hand.. will try later hiding in my car..

Tom Tom 6 and Artemis. Initial Impressions.

Tom Tom 6 and Artemis. Hoping my Initial Impressions may help someone.
Hi,
I'm a newbie... not up to the high standards of others here. But I thought it might be useful to give a newbies initial impressions on running TomTom 6 (application+DVD) on an Artemis.
I ordered TomTom from TomTom online. They quoted up to 5 weeks, but it took 5 days to get the DVD which contains application and Europe map and I received my TomTom 6 this afternoon and loaded it on my XDA Orbit with no real problems. (See below)
This goes against the advice of TomTom who say that it is not supported yet.
I started by resetting the XDA Orbit clean, which obliterated CoPilot.
TomTom 6 installed easily from the installation DVD.
Using the application software, I put the main program in the memory of the XDA, but put the maps and extra bits on a 2GB card. I was nervous about buying a 4gb or larger card , and so purchased a CNEX Flash format program to give me better control of what was happening on the Flash card.
The program installs on the PC first, and shows a split screen showing what's available to you on the left (e.g. DVD) and what's on your Artemis on the right (Memory & Flash card).
Registering was easy, but if you elect to pay for the Traffic reports etc, it's advisory to read the instructions to avoid losing out on the free month.
Finally, I downloaded John Cleese's voice at 10 Euros, since I'm a Python fan. This is nice.
Comparing it to CoPilot some issues struck me.
Good News?
-----------
First,It seems to be working well.
To my mind the range of TomTom extras seems huge and well developed. Colours, maps, layouts, voices. Good stuff.
I don't get CoPilot starting up at every opportunity.. like incoming calls. (Yes I've disabled the button)
I'll add to this thread anything I discover.
Problems?
----------
First, TomTom does not have an 'Exit' in the program like CoPilot. This was/is a pain.
No doubt I'll discover an answer from some helpful soul soon.
I press the red phone icon when in TomTom which brings up the XDA's menu. I can then I'm select Memory, Programs in use, and hit it over the head with a mallet.
It does raise the question what happens if someone rings me? More investigation needed.
Secondly, Tom Tom does not have a menu structure. You just touch the map which brings up options via icons. It works, but was/is not intuitive for me as CoPilot was.
I think I prefer the 2d direction maps of CoPilot to the 3D of TomTom. But it's early days.
General
-------
I have always had low Satellite reception on my XDA Orbit. Particularly in my house. CoPilot vsTomTom made no difference. In the car reception worked fine even with a heated front windscreen.
I've still got some ferreting around to do. I want to increase the warning distance from 200metres for one thing. I've also got to find out about the Traffic Alerts and how it works and can suggest rerouting etc.
All the best.
Hello!
It's obviuos you're quite new to TT, since there is an exit-button in TT, well it's somehow misplaced but it's there. When TT shows the map -> tap on the screen -> hit the next page button twice -> voila the exit button.
To edit the menu to your likings you can build your own TT menu. Onlineversion & Offlineversion. Just to make things clear the TomTom.mnu belongs in \TomTom\SdkRegistry
It does'nt make a difference if you use TT or another GPS-capable software in terms of GPS reception it depends only on the location your are roaming in (and I must say I'm more then positiv suprised with the quality of the GPS chip compared to all other devices I had before). Every software gets the same data from the Orbits inbuild GPS chip (well if you are intend to try MN6 it is likely you will experince problems with the positioning but it's cause MN6 is running slow as hell)

There are hundreds of pois out there for TT for almost every thing, some are free and some are...well...search the internet.

That's helpful. It's my first foray into GPS stuff, and I was suprised when I lost CoPilot over the Christmas period. The o2 rep said that it was the fog, and I still am sceptical that that was the whole story.

What exactly do you wanna know? The GPS reception or MN6?
I've taken a look at MN6 about 2 weeks ago and it was not usable in any way. Navigating through the menu was horrible slow and from what I've heard from others it gives voice instructions way too late, just when you have passed destination/turnings. Also calculating the route is very slow.
I had the chance to test MN6 on a PNA (Transonic 6000) the other week and even on this kind of device it was not running that well but much much better than on my Artemis.

So far not yet past destinations... but it's only day two.

QUESTION:
-----------
Can you tell me whether the slowness etc is due to the software or is it something else?
I notice a thread about TomTom and T-Mobile MDA Compact 3 and it seems to run ok on that. Isn't the T-Mobile MDA Compact 3 roughly the same as my Orbit is is it the operator making a difference?
QUESTION:
-----------
Any tips to watch out for about running TomTom on the Orbit?
e.g. can for example the Artemis be overclocked and resolve some of these weaknesses ? What's your opinion?
Finally, I had NOT noticed but TomTom was booting up at each soft reset. I turned it off but hadn't noticed that the GPRS was still live ... hence a bigger bill for GPRS than I was expecting.
I had a look on the sd card and found the TomTom auto Autorun file called Start.exe in the root Dir of the card. I moved it into another folder and all is ok. Most of the time now TomTom does not start up unless I invoke it.
QUESTION:
-----------
When TomTom exits can the GPRS link be broken off automatically?.. might save me a few pennies?
Thanks

Hi Ann,
I just got my MDAC3 as well and have just installed TT6 from a DVD. These are my thoughts to your questions above. I did a bit of web searching before I got one though, to find out that YES, the MDAC3 = O2 Orbit = Dopod P800W = HTC Artemis (with(out) various options made possible by Texas Instruments(the makers of the hardware) [MDAC3, Orbit, Dopod P800W are corporate brand names of the various carriers in their relevant countries, but are all know and referred to as ARTEMIS in the development circles.]
Answers to Q1 and Q2: -
I think the slowness may be due to a combination of several things.
a.) The type of microSD card you have in your set - when I was searching to buy one, I noticed there are 2 types : a normal one and and ultra II. The difference is the ultra II has a faster read/write speed, which is affects the general speed/performance of the TT6.
b.) AFAIK(As far as I Know) The orbit has a bit more capabilities than the MDAC3 such as WIFI. This additional function the same processor-OMAP850 has to cater for. Now, this porcessor is not necessarily the most efficient or the fastest available, so impacts performance as well.
c.) If you overclock, there will be a noticable improvement in performance, and a corresponding increase in battery consumption, but this may not translate to an improved experience with TT6, if you have it on a normal card vis ultra II.
The speed of refreshing the map overlay and playing the sound files associated I believe is the reason you hear the instructions after passing the landmarks/turnings, all of which I think is due to the card read/write spead again, plus the processor speed.
Answer to Q3
Its surprising that you mentioned GPRS - as this differs from GPS which the TomTom uses, though I was made to understand that a SatNav software may also use the GPRS (wierd - as this is VERY expensive if you dont have the unlimited package only available cheaply on T-Mobile). You may want to check the the connection settings of the TomTom, changing it to connect using the GPS on a port you set on the hardware.
Start Menu > Settings > System> GPS > Hardware (You may also set the port for TT6 to connect on the Program window.
TT6 starts the GPS receiver upon request for navigation (which I thought was intelligent - to save battery power)
Lastly,
IMOE (In my own Experience) I initially installed the TT6 software + maps from the DVD + POI overlay to the microSD ULTRA II, and noticed it froze up many times then I installed in the phone memory, removed the overlay (TT6 has a manageable one), maps still in the microSD and it stopped freezing up, plus refresh of map was every second.
Now I have overclocked with the hope of a good performance whilst multitasking, which is Ok with some combinations and not with others. Hence my conclusion as stated above. The processor really can be better, but Vs price, it will not be marketable in its class with the many ther products out there at the price it is given.
I hope I have been of some help.
Cheers

You can use a 2D map mode if you really want to, go to change preferences/ Turn off 3D display.
You can overclock the unit but I have found no valid reason to actually do this.
The GPRS charges are only applicable to the actual data transferred to/ from your device, so don't worry about it remaining connected - if there is no data traffic there will be no extra charges.
Leave the GPS applet alone (the one that exists in the settings menu) this often leads to confusion and is only really needed to be used/ set-up IF you want to run two applications at the same time (not something the Artemis excels at due to the processor power). Set to Other NMEA GPS receiver/ Baud 9600/ COM4 should be all that is required.
As for poor GPS reception, you mention the car has a heated screen, is this Athermic glass which is known to attenuate the signal or a standard wire heater element embeded in the glass (which do not affect GPS performance) - make sure the Quick GPS data is up to date, and don't drive around until the device has actually locked on to the signal - Mike

This thread is all about TomTom6. Best Sat-Nav software I have found for the Orbit. Doesn't cost anything to use after you purchase the software, unless you want to add the extra's, like Traffic data or Weather data.
TT6 and WM6 sloww processing
I updated my Orbit to WM6 yesterday and was a bit annoyed that TomTom has slowed down to a point where it's pretty useless for navigating. this is made worse by the fact that on WM5 it was faultless, and a lot faster to process than an Eten glofiish X500, which has a 400MHz processor!
Can I roll my Orbit back to WM5? If so, how do I do it?

You can download O2 UK WM5 ROM from these forums. just run this and you should be OK back to WM5.
On a different note. I too installed WM6 onto my Orbit and noticed NO slow down in speed of navigation. If anything I noticed it was slightly faster. Not sure why you experience the opposite from me.
Only thing I can think of is:- Did you install O2 WM6? or B&B v4?

Go into the mobile 6 thread in the forums. Black & Blue version4 looks a lot better that O2's WM6 and runs a damn site faster too. Do not upgrade to O2 WM6 first though. You need to be running WM5 and then upgrade to B&B 4 as the upgrade does something to the handset and seems to block any further update.
Before you do anything you need to download and install USPL on your handset. If you don't do USPL first you will end up with a stylish "brick"

Many thanks for that. I searched the site last night, and found B&B v4, and V3.7, and also USPL. Unfortunately, I had already upgraded with the O2 WM6, so although I have also been able to roll back to WM5 (and TomTom is now back up to speed), I am getting the "Image file corrupted" message with any attempted update, including USPL. Looks like I've been blocked from any updates unless anyone has a solution? I still have my Glofiish X500 running WM6, but the XDA runs TomTom more quickly.

This has happened to a few people. Download the file again and try.
P.S. Are you using XP or Vista. Vista seems to be a bit problematic. Some people have gotten Vista to flash ok, I on the otherhand have not.
For complete trouble free flashing use XP.
Run start_uspl.exe file, then after phone has rebooted again, run the ROM of your choice and upgrade to WM6. You won't be disappointed.........unless you run the O2 WM6 which I have found to be a big disappointment.
Success!

have you upgraded to windows mobile 6.1??
if so, then go to start > settings > Phone > Services tab > make sure location setting is highlighted, click get settings >then make sure it is set to on.
that will make sure that applications are allowed to use your gps signal.
then once you have done that,
open your gps, if you use google maps you have to click menu, use gps.
I have upgraded to the official verizion 6.1 rom. My question is, does gps use data? Is the gps a real gps that connects to satellites or is it some pseudo gps that approximates my location by triangulating distances between my phone and the nearest couple cell towers? I don't have a data plan and don't want an unpleasant suprise on my next bill.

Yes, the Vogue has a real GPS antena. If you read through the forums you'll find verizon users have to do a bit of tweaking to get it working.
It can be confusing, because our phones also support "agps". This stands for assisted gps. AGPS uses cell phone tower triangulation to get a position.
GPS has inherent errors, in the aviation world there is a system called diffrential GPS. This uses a ground based system to correct the time diffrential error in the sattelites for greater accuracy. Without dgps you cannot use the gps inputs for a precision approach, only enroute, terminal and overlay. We use other systems such as vor/dme. This uses ground based "towers" to get a position using radial and distance information. This is very similiar to what agps does.
to answer the question does it use data?
the answer is yes.
it has to have a data connection in order to receive the gps data.
atleast thats my understanding, as a data connection does start and maintain during my gps sessions.

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.
thanks method man for correcting me.
i didn't think about it that way. haha.

The reason it dont work is because GPS tries to connect one way, i belive its phone as modem. and when you browse the internet, it tries to connect as Sprint PCS.
now i might be wrong in that, but just lisen.
in order to fix it you need to do a registry change. get a free program to edit the registry. like PHM RegEdit.
got it downloaded? installed? good. lets move on.
open it up
click on My Device
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+Comm
+ConnMgr
+Providers
+{7C4B7A38-somethingsomethingsomething}
+Phone as Modem.
go into that setting, make sure that the key AlwaysOn is set to 0
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
go down a setting from phone as modem to
+SprintPCS
the key inside doesnt have to be set to Always On, but you can enable it if you want.
now close it up. count to 20 and do a restart on the phone
next time you try to run any GPS app it should work. use GoogleMaps though.
also while you are in here you can go into ConnectionSharing. a key above ConnMgr. and make it so you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop. the option was removed in the 6.1 update. let me know if you wish to know how.

I called Verizon regarding the WM 6.1 upgrade and they told me to go to Microsoft's website and download it. Microsoft says go to the carrier's website. I'm confused. I'm using a Verizon XV6900 running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Are we talking the same thing? Is there a newer version (6.1) than 6 Professional? If so, where can I get it?
Also, I've read about enabling the internal GPS antenna, which appeals to me, but there is so much info with different instructions, talking about Sprint and Alltel, radios, etc. Is there a good (read: easy) set of instructions for this? Also, a list of the possible problems encountered (function, data loss, etc.)? I don't want to be a pain in the rear, but this is not my specialty. But I could really use the GPS capability with my work (real estate) w/o needing an exterior unit. I currently use a DeLorme bluetooth unit, but its a pain.
Thanks in advance, Jim.

Here is the link to the offical WM6.1 ROM
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
1. sync your phone with Outlook. You will loose everything on your phone when you flash the new ROM. Files on your memory card will be safe.
2. Unlock your phone with 2.31 & refer to the links below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html
3. connect your phone to your computer via activesync & run the ROM file you download. Simply follow the instructions.
4. Your phone will hard reset once the flash is complete. You will have to align the screen & such. The very last screen will ask you to tap the screen to begin using your device. You have to be ready to soft reset your phone as soon as you tap the screen. DO NOT LET THE CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED FOR SURE.
5.Settings--->Phone--->Services Tab select location settings & then hit the get settings button. Make sure Location On is selected.
6. Download the Holus GPS viewer & install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434408&highlight=holux+gps+viewer
post #3
7. Once the GPS viewer open hit the scan button. This will tell you what port & at what baud you GPS is at. It should be com 4 @ 4800.
8. Hit the open GPS button & hopefully you will get a lock.
phone keeps scanning for satellites
Is this normal? The GPS program ran and continues to search for satellites. Its alomst like it can't find any. I ran it just the way you listed. Anything else I can try?
If you are using Holux GPS viewer and you see red dots then be happy your GPS is working. Usually first lock takes longer. try it on an open place hopefully you will get a lock. The red dots you see on Holux are the satellites that your GPS is seeing, Once it gets a lock you will see blue dots and that's a fix. If it continues to flash red dots, I would try closing and opening port once, that wud restart the GPS.
Once you get a lock, use any 3rd party software like Garmin Mobile XT or Tomtom Navigator 7 if you don't have a data plan. If you have a dataplan then you can use goolemaps too.
Hope it helps..

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.

No that isn't true at all,
I have both Tomtom and Igo with map files on the sd card. The phone needs the internet to get the agps information otherwise the GPS programs can't get a lock. It doesn't use much adata at all as I was roaming in the states (from canada) for around 10 days , I used the gps everyday and was only charged under $3 for the whole 10 days.

Here is the update you are looking for, now.... For the love of the lord, DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATION RUN!!!
Update your device as directed in the file, when the device updates and restarts, you will see a message that says something like "Running Customization in... 3,2,1 Seconds" or something like that, when you see that, stick the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device and you will avoid a big pain in the @ss.
EDIT: Oops, i'm too late LOL, didn't refresh thepage while searching the update.
Can't get a lock
I just followed all the steps and installed GPS viewer and could not get a lock. I used the Verizon MR1 rom. Since that did not work I tried installing Valhalla GPS Server to see if that would help. No luck. Any Ideas?

I have data blocked on my phone and the GPS worked fine up until about a month ago. Whatever Verizon did blocked my GPS and I have not been able to get is working since. I can still run GPS viewer and see satellites but I can't get a fix on them.
I have everything working now. Thanks.
Just so I have it straight...
When I unlock the phone with 2.31, do I let customizations run? The ppcgeeks thread doesn't specify, but the atwistedweb thread says let them run. What does 2.31 do? Just unlock the phone so I can install the next ROM? Also, the ppc post talks about disabling USB while the other does not. Is there a preference?
When I install the new WM6.1 ROM, the atwistedweb post says to install it from the SD card, while the this thread says via USB. Once again, any preference?
I understand not to let the customizations run for this ROM and by putting the stylus in the bottom hole it resets the machine. After it comes up again, will the phone be (should be) upgraded and ready to use?
Lastly, if my phone gets "bricked" (I guess that means it turns into a battery powered paperweight), you guy can help me out, right?
Man, all of this just to get GPS and Verizon service. Still nervous! And Verizon won't shut my service off or stop tech support?
Thanks again. Trying to get all the info up front so I don't have to later. Jim

Make sure you have backed up everything. First you need to unlock with the .40 unlocker. Then flash to the sprint pre-GPS ROM (This will downgrade your radio which is said to be dangerous but I have never heard of anyone hurting their phone while doing it correctly. This will also require you to call Verizon and get a new A-key. If they ask you what happened just tell them that you had to hard reset your device because of a bad program. Go through all of their steps and it will all get fixed. You have to call Verizon because you wont be able to make calls.) DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! You'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). As soon as you see that pop up stick your stylus in the reset hole. Then unlock with the 2.31 unlocker. After you use this unlocker you wont have to unlock again. Ok now you flash back to the Verizon MR1 ROM. DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! Once again you'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). Now after you do this your GPS should be working but I was never able to get it to work with the Verizon MR1 ROM. So I recommend using NSFFAN's 6.5 ROM. Now when I unlock and flash ROM's I don't disable the USB thing your talking about. I also flash everything through my computer (USB) and not through the SD card. There is a small chance you can brick your phone but if you do everything carefully and correctly it's a very very small chance. Just make sure you are doing everything right before moving on to each next step. If a phone is bricked I don't think it can be recovered but i'm not 100% sure. Lots of times when there are problems though it's not a bricked phone and just a glitch so if you have anything that doesn't seem right just come on here and ask for help. Verizon won't do anything with your service except fix your phone like I said earlier unless you tell them what your actually doing. I don't know what happens then and I don't want to find out.. What they don't know won't hurt them Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

TomTom 7 now compatible with Touch HD

A UK company are now selling TomTom 7 software that is compatible with Touch HD.
http://www.handtec.co.uk/product.php/539/tomtom-navigator-7-software---map-of-western-europe
I wonder if this will solve the GPS dropout problems that I'm experiencing with my current version 7.915. The problem is that you have to buy a new map to get the latest software, I've already paid for the Europe map, so I looks like I'll have to buy the UK map and not use it to get the latest "compatible" software and knowing my luck it won't fix the dropouts anyway .
GPS Dropout
im using TomTom 7 and Igo8 on my HD and i dont have any GPS dropout, granted when it first aquires the lock it does flash locked/unlocked for about 10 - 15 seconds then thats it, its locked and stays locked, works best on igo8 though locks straight away and stays locked, and if im honest i think i prefer IGO8 even though i have graduated with tomtom 5,6, and now 7, but still nice to have both
Unfortunately, I'm having real trouble.

Using TomTom 7, it works fine for a time and then the GPS stops working. Exiting and restarting TomTom always brings it back. Time scale is random, it can work for hours before going tits up.
I've tried three different Roms, five different radios, two different versions of TomTom 7, AGPS is disabled, GPS mode set to 1.
It's starting to look like a hardware problem.

I've just disabled Quick GPS and deleted xtra.bin from the windows directory in case it's a corrupt ephemeris problem, I don't hold out too much hope though.

I wish mine was and it's not for want of trying.
My last hope is that it's something to do with me being, currently, in the South of France. The problem got progressively worse as I drove south from UK. Perhaps it's something to do with the phone downloading a UK ephemeris which is no good in Southern Europe. Although it must be said that I did not have this problem with TomTom 6 on my previous two phones, Artemis and TyTnII.
I've had problems with tomtom on cooked roms, but having gone back to the last UK stock rom and tomtom 7.915 i have had no problems at all.

Thanks, but I've tried hard resets and reinstallation of tomtom to no avail.
Roms I've tried are:
1.14.405.3
1.56.405.1
1.57.831.1
Dutty's 3.2XT
Dutty's 3.3XT
All exhibit the same problem with tomtom, ie random GPS dropouts. I think the only thing I can do is to buy the official release version that states compatibility, then I can get some tech support from tomtom and HTC.

The last standard UK rom from HTC is a 1.56 variant (you can download it from the HTC website with your HD serial number).
I had problems with tomtom when running versions 3 and 3.3 of dutty's roms, when either the program wouldn't start (it would just crash back to the today screen) or no satellites would be seen or the program would just freeze when navigating (used to happen a lot on 90 degree bends for some reason.
I suspect the cooked rom issues may be linked to memory usage, but i'm not sure.
I use tomtom a great deal (probably 20+ hours a week), so decided to go back to the stock rom and i've not had 1 single problem in the 2 weeks since.
You've probably covered this elsewhere in your thread, but it may be worth installing HDTweak and making sure that you've got AGPS switched off.
Good luck

anyone know what the version is ?? 7.x or 8 ?? that's offically supported
As there isn't a navigator 8 yet, I would be absolutely shocked if it was anything but 7.x

I'm using the same rom as you at the moment with no luck. Tried all permutations of agps/no agps using hdtweak and gps mode in registry, also tried another SD card. This is so annoying as I'm on a driving holiday in Europe. I've just downloaded Davideuck's WM6.5 rom and will try that, clutching at straws here.
The freezing you had with Dutty's roms sounds like the same problem I'm getting. It's completely random, can work fine for hours and can freeze twice in five minutes, mine seems worse in slow or stationary traffic, but it can happen anywhere and usually does it at the most inconvenient moment. If I exit and restart tomtom, it comes straight back. I suspect it's something to do with timing somewhere.
Which version of the maps are you using?
Where have you got tomtom installed (i've got it installed on the device)?
Which radio are you using? (i've found 1.13 to be the most reliable)

best of luck to you
Do you do a 'clear storage' when you flash? just in case there is a bad settings file somewhere on your storage card?
I had a torrid time getting tomtom to work 100% reliably on a cooked rom, but have never had any problems on a stock rom, so this has effectively cured my 'flashing fever' and i'm happy to stick with what i've got now, especially as i had tomtom lockups all the time on a way to a wedding in central manchester a few weeks back that caused no end of grief in the car
Arrrrrgggghhhhhh......
It did it again .
The only difference this time was that the navigator screen went grey and showed no satellites rather than pretend that nothing had happened and carry on showing motion albeit slowly leaving the road. It looks like it's the gps module switching itself off from time to time and requiring a restart. I seem to remember seeing something about a registry controlled timer, I'll look into that now.
What you describe above is exactly what happened to me when i was running one of dutty's roms. I would lose signal and it would wander off road before going round in a big circle and ending up at the point where it lost signal. I would also find that for some time afterwards i was unable to see any satellites in any GPS application.
I tried flagging it up on the forums here thinking it was an issue in the cooked rom, but I didn't get anywhere. Thankfully a stock HTC rom got everything as it should be and i navigated without any issue at all around the south east of england for 3 days (approx 18 hours of GPS time) last week and also made a couple of trips this weekend without issue.

If so, great.
But I also need North America maps. Where would I be able to purchase those from, or would I need to buy them in the US? Is it then just as simple as loading the new maps onto a card?

GPS X9601

GPS problems
Ok so I have a North American GSM x9501...
Never used the GPS (Telenav isn't available to Canadian residense). This device is unlocked and NOT purchased from Rogers...
Downloaded Google maps, tried to use GPS and it wouldn't work. Set the settings manually Com4 57600 baud... It says searching for satalites, and has some HUGE number (54357734578) in brackets... GPS doesn't work.
Installed the HTC GPS tool, looks like GPS data is coming in, but can't get a fix. Then tried to use GPSgate, and it says GPS data is coming in but cannot get fix. Both of these two apps can't find any satalites.
Does anyone know what is up?

yep, go out in middle of a field or open Terrace or any place where you can see the sky above you head directly and then start google maps with GPS or HTC GPS tool or GPS gate etc , wait 3-5 min and then it should have fix...
cheers
I've given is some time... Probably over 5 minutes...
It's just odd, I have lots of experiencing using GPS software and devices. It looks like it should be working, the only odd behaviour is:
1) It finds no satalites
and
2) Google Maps says "Seeking Satalites (3874732644)" which is odd, because theres not that many GPS satalites, lol.
Change the Baud Rate to 9600 and see whether it will work.
Tried different baud rates.
Yesterday I let it sit for 15 minutes on google maps until finally it said there was no reception...
And I know I have reception because I was outside. Both my TytN II and HP iPaq have no trouble aquiring fix's...
download free VISUALGPS CE and install. Then connect it to COM4 and press start.
See the NMEA log monitor section. You should see lot's of data, if not, your GPS might be bad.
I'm unsure if your 9501 will work with the ROM's we use in Europe to make calls, and have GPS enabled.. If it's OK, I would flash Thai Hugo's Age of Reason and check again your GPS.
I'm using the factory ROM for the X9501 (Which does support GPS off the bat).
I used the HTC tool, and it looked like NMEA data was going through...

On the HTC tool there is option to see the satellites , check if its has any satellites on red color, if so keep the shift out in terrace or garden until 3 satellite color changes to green , have patience....
if it does not show any satellite on the HTC tool then probably you need to flash the rom with some new rom from the forum ..
Before you do that make a copy of your Stock/original rom ..see forum for instruction
PS: Since you have the stock / orginal rom X9501....would you do me a favour and check if you connect to head set and on Windows mobile side WM6, can you record a message and then play back and you can hear your self back .... I wanted to know if the mic works with head set on WM6 side...for the Stock 9501 ROM.

Can I ask another favour , do you have any registry editor installed on you shift.
if so , can try to dump/export the registry settings for HKLocalMachine (HKLM) to a xml ot reg file and then copy / upload the xml/reg file here .
we want to use head set with X9500 shift and are trying to find a solution , may be its a reg setting that can fix the problem.

Nope , the issue is we cannot use the head set in WM6 as the mic on Head set does not work....so we have to use the speaker phone and its not good for phone calls private or business.
I would appreciate if you can help us to resolve the issue , if you can dump the reg keys for HKLM / Drivers/inbuilt ... it might give us some direction.
Appreciate your support.

GPS - Software, Performance

Now that Verizon finally has unlocked the GPS on a new device, I am curious about what navigation software and performance everyone is seeing. I tried TomTom 7 on my Imagio and it is lagging about 10 seconds. I haven't had time to really give it a good test, however it was a little concerning. How is your GPS working for you?
Same with me, Navigator is too laggy to work. I've installed Nav4All (free at nav4all.com) and it works great but is very rudimentary.
Goggle Maps works fine but not TTS so the search continues...
Interesting, I was using version ttn7.915.9196 for the record. I saw somewhere that there is a newer version for the TP2 out but i think it only added the ability to use the keyboard. I noticed that on the TomTom sight it only shows the Iphone edition I wonder if they are tweaking it for the new rev of WM phone. I think i might buy Copilot 8 if we can't find a fix considering its only something like $35.
Copilot 8 works great!
I use Ostia from pharosgps.com.
It was lightning fast to locate me, compared to using my old Tilt.
This is my third phone using Ostia and have to say currently liking it best.

You must first use HTCs Quick GPS. It speeds up the lock on the satellites. Google maps finds my location within seconds and Bing in less than a minute

Is QuickGPS a memory hog? And is it always on? I'm a little afraid to install it.
In the meantime, I have always like Garmin software. Garmin XT works very well on the Imagio. I got it off of ebay for about $25. It's also got lots of connected services, like nearby gas prices, flight times, google search, weather etc.
no quick gps isn't a memory hog and should already be on your device. The way it works is:
The GPS chip receives a synchronized timed signal from the satellites (birds) the US DoD launched into orbit. Each bird uses a different channel. With a good signal from three or more birds, GPS starts to get a fix. It does this by calculating the time difference between the reception of the different signals, then calculating the relative distances to each of the birds, then figuring out where it sits in the middle of the birds.
The GPS calculates four spheres, and its located somewhere on the surface of each of these spheres. There is only one point where these four spheres intersect. That's you.
If you're good at geometry, you might think that it needs 4 birds to get a fix, but in fact, if the GPS assumes that you are on earth, that provides another sphere, so it only requires 3 birds to get a decent fix. More adds altitude and accuracy.
But the GPS needs to know where each of the birds is before it can decide where IT is. That information is not calculated, but is available in a detailed download of orbital data provided by the DoD called ephemeris data. It is transmitted...from the bird to your GPS. For a cold start, your GPS needs to download the entire file, without interruptions in the signal - BEFORE it can even start getting a fix. In fact, the GPS may not even know which channels to tune into, since it doesn't yet know which birds are currently overhead. This causes a slow first fix.
Quick GPS, is simple. Ephemeris data is passed thru WiFi or cellular data connection ahead of time, and you never have to wait for it to download over the satellite. Awesome.

I'm using IGo8 and it works perfectly.
I'v been happy with Bing for Maps/Turn-by-Turn GPS, with the bigger screen of the Imagio it's more than adequate for my needs. It also has gas prices, movies, and speech recognition which is very nice. Use Quick GPS to cache satellite info and it locks very quickly after that.

I was confused, when I opened up QuickGPS, it said "Download", so I assumed it was like the Windows Marketplace icon, and that you actually had to download the program first. I was wrong- download means download GPS Data.

Correct, and it will auto-close after as it's not needed to stay running to work, just download cache files and exit.
Give it a try it has always worked will for me
IGO 8 is by far the best navigation software takes some tweaking to get it to work but if you do some searching you can find what your looking for on the net. Garmin XT uses a bit less program memory and still works well but not near as slick as IGO. Make sure you use latest possible release and maps.
Is it Igo 8 or OnCourse 8 in the US. I went to the site and found it a little confusing. Looked pretty nice either way.
Can't get Tomtom to work
On the topic of GPS programs, I have used Tomtom Navigator 6 (purchased version) for some time. Worked great on my AT&T fuze, but when I tried to install it on the imagio, it looks like everything is smooshed to the top of the screen, and is unusable. I contacted Tomtom, but they replied simply that it was an unsupported phone. I guess I'll have to try a different program. Anybody else had issues?

I've been using TomTom for years too. On my PDA's and winmo phones. I didn't install it on the Imagio because I was going to get the latest maps from TomTom and see if they had any software updates. But all they have on their site now is iPhone and zip for winmo, so it looked to me like they were dropping windows support, so I dropped them.
I can get by with Google Maps and/or Windows Live Search (Bing) - and for turn by turn I'm now using the $35 CoPilot 8. Works real well, but I have very limited time on it so far.
I was going to switch to Garmin XT, but you need a completely dedicated microSD for that - that's a deal breaker.
My friend installed wm 6.5 on his wing and he is having a similar problem with TOMTOM being very laggy. I think its a wm 6.5 issue and not and Imagio!
