GPS - Software, Performance - Imagio General

Now that Verizon finally has unlocked the GPS on a new device, I am curious about what navigation software and performance everyone is seeing. I tried TomTom 7 on my Imagio and it is lagging about 10 seconds. I haven't had time to really give it a good test, however it was a little concerning. How is your GPS working for you?

Same with me, Navigator is too laggy to work. I've installed Nav4All (free at nav4all.com) and it works great but is very rudimentary.
Goggle Maps works fine but not TTS so the search continues...

Interesting, I was using version ttn7.915.9196 for the record. I saw somewhere that there is a newer version for the TP2 out but i think it only added the ability to use the keyboard. I noticed that on the TomTom sight it only shows the Iphone edition I wonder if they are tweaking it for the new rev of WM phone. I think i might buy Copilot 8 if we can't find a fix considering its only something like $35.

Copilot 8 works great!

I use Ostia from pharosgps.com.
It was lightning fast to locate me, compared to using my old Tilt.
This is my third phone using Ostia and have to say currently liking it best.

You must first use HTCs Quick GPS. It speeds up the lock on the satellites. Google maps finds my location within seconds and Bing in less than a minute

Is QuickGPS a memory hog? And is it always on? I'm a little afraid to install it.
In the meantime, I have always like Garmin software. Garmin XT works very well on the Imagio. I got it off of ebay for about $25. It's also got lots of connected services, like nearby gas prices, flight times, google search, weather etc.

no quick gps isn't a memory hog and should already be on your device. The way it works is:
The GPS chip receives a synchronized timed signal from the satellites (birds) the US DoD launched into orbit. Each bird uses a different channel. With a good signal from three or more birds, GPS starts to get a fix. It does this by calculating the time difference between the reception of the different signals, then calculating the relative distances to each of the birds, then figuring out where it sits in the middle of the birds.
The GPS calculates four spheres, and its located somewhere on the surface of each of these spheres. There is only one point where these four spheres intersect. That's you.
If you're good at geometry, you might think that it needs 4 birds to get a fix, but in fact, if the GPS assumes that you are on earth, that provides another sphere, so it only requires 3 birds to get a decent fix. More adds altitude and accuracy.
But the GPS needs to know where each of the birds is before it can decide where IT is. That information is not calculated, but is available in a detailed download of orbital data provided by the DoD called ephemeris data. It is transmitted...from the bird to your GPS. For a cold start, your GPS needs to download the entire file, without interruptions in the signal - BEFORE it can even start getting a fix. In fact, the GPS may not even know which channels to tune into, since it doesn't yet know which birds are currently overhead. This causes a slow first fix.
Quick GPS, is simple. Ephemeris data is passed thru WiFi or cellular data connection ahead of time, and you never have to wait for it to download over the satellite. Awesome.

I'm using IGo8 and it works perfectly.

I'v been happy with Bing for Maps/Turn-by-Turn GPS, with the bigger screen of the Imagio it's more than adequate for my needs. It also has gas prices, movies, and speech recognition which is very nice. Use Quick GPS to cache satellite info and it locks very quickly after that.

I was confused, when I opened up QuickGPS, it said "Download", so I assumed it was like the Windows Marketplace icon, and that you actually had to download the program first. I was wrong- download means download GPS Data.

Correct, and it will auto-close after as it's not needed to stay running to work, just download cache files and exit.

Give it a try it has always worked will for me

IGO 8 is by far the best navigation software takes some tweaking to get it to work but if you do some searching you can find what your looking for on the net. Garmin XT uses a bit less program memory and still works well but not near as slick as IGO. Make sure you use latest possible release and maps.

Is it Igo 8 or OnCourse 8 in the US. I went to the site and found it a little confusing. Looked pretty nice either way.

Can't get Tomtom to work
On the topic of GPS programs, I have used Tomtom Navigator 6 (purchased version) for some time. Worked great on my AT&T fuze, but when I tried to install it on the imagio, it looks like everything is smooshed to the top of the screen, and is unusable. I contacted Tomtom, but they replied simply that it was an unsupported phone. I guess I'll have to try a different program. Anybody else had issues?

I've been using TomTom for years too. On my PDA's and winmo phones. I didn't install it on the Imagio because I was going to get the latest maps from TomTom and see if they had any software updates. But all they have on their site now is iPhone and zip for winmo, so it looked to me like they were dropping windows support, so I dropped them.
I can get by with Google Maps and/or Windows Live Search (Bing) - and for turn by turn I'm now using the $35 CoPilot 8. Works real well, but I have very limited time on it so far.
I was going to switch to Garmin XT, but you need a completely dedicated microSD for that - that's a deal breaker.

My friend installed wm 6.5 on his wing and he is having a similar problem with TOMTOM being very laggy. I think its a wm 6.5 issue and not and Imagio!

HP Ipaq 614 GPS don´t Work.

Hello!
I have a Ipaq 614C and I have a problem. When i install the TomTom i can't connect to the GPS. In the HP asset's it appear GPS: Present but in the status appear disable.
Anyone can help me.
Thanks.
John
Check in TOMTOM which GPS com port it's using. Then change to same port
as set in Settngs->Systems-> External GPS -> Programs com port.
I dont use Tomtom myself but I've used so far Google Maps and NAv4All and it works fine without any changes.
Good luck.
On my ipaq 614, the default com port for the gps is port number 6. And it works fine with that.
im also having some GPS difficulties with 614c: i already tried it with igo8, tomtom navigator and latest google maps. it finds satellites very slowly and rarely, mostly never. anyone got an idea?

Hi all, mine did not come with any quick GPS installed, the older (tomtom related) version from the 6915 does not work on that device any longer, where did you get quick gps? or is it hidden somewhere..? Since there is no navi software installed, only google maps..
txs
From my personal experience with it, it took absolutely FOREVER to connect to a satellite the very first time I tried. Took about 7 "cannot find a signal" messages before I finally snagged one.
After that, it was ~20 seconds to connect every time.
I really dont know what the deal was, but after that initial connection it seemed perfectly fine.
So my advice is, try again for a little while.
I also have problems with GPS on HP 614c. But the problem probably not in the chip, and in programs as Oziexplorer and Google Navigator satellites catch and precisely defines a site, and Navitel works through time and that in a minute satellites as though fade and data cease to be updated, Garmin in general satellites does not see. Firmware update has not helped. Anybody has ideas?
p.s. sorry for my english
With program Navitel has understood, the reason was in program MultyDID, it blocked access to keyboards and deformed a signal from satellites, Garmin does not function.

I agree with all these comments and the above regarding open space. GPS does indeed require a clear view of the sky... but one thing not so often said is that GPS needs a clear view of the NORTHERN sky... most of the GPS satellites are in a geostationary orbit above northern part of the planet.
To the guy who has tried leaving the phone on the balcony... I suspect your balcony is south facing (very nice).
I have also found that the longer it is since your last fix, the longer it will take to get a fix. GPS satellites only broadcast their "here I am" messages every 30 seconds and it is mostly down to luck whether your phone is listening for the right satellite at the right time. That's why it takes a while to obtain a GPS fix on all devices. QuickGPS and other software tries to expedite the fix by allowing the phone to calculate which satellites will be the right ones to listen out for, based on a daily positions log of the GPS satellites (called ephemera data).
GPS does work quite well on the 614c (I use tomtom 6.3 and Google Maps, both extensively)... but it does often take a long time to get a fix - sometimes even 10 minutes.

Very nice. I woud've never thought about that. However, i think geostationary orbit is when the satelite goes around the equator with the same angular speed as the rotation of the Earth. So these satelites actually go around in an orbit perpendecular to the equator. Yesterday i tested and got 2 satelites inside a room with north windows. Very cool. Do you use quick GPS. I installed it and downloaded the data for the next 7 days. I didn't notice any improvement. I use DESTINATOR 7 and Maspware GPSmeter 5.I don't really get it - who manages the data downloaded by Qgps - windows drivers or the gps software itself.
More GPS thoughts
Axlastro - the ephemeris data that QuickGPS and other programs download is nothing to do with Microsoft/Windows or with HP. It is official data on the positions and movements of the satellites in the GPS network. Provided ultimately by some government department, probably American.
If you have not noticed an improvement over a period of several days, I'm not sure why this is. This old posting might help you.
Ephemeris data is also actually transmitted by the satellites themselves. This is why, when you have recently had a fix, it is usually quite quick to get another one. Programs like QuickGPS are only therefore useful if it's been a while since your last fix.
Thanks. I googled the topic and got some detailed explanations.
http://wmexperts.com/articles/gps_vs_agps_a_quick_tutorial.html
I also found a thread that says that QUICKgps doesn't work with the ipaq.
http://mobilitytoday.com/forum/showthread.php?t=16767
So that's why i don't see improvement. However neither of the people on that forum has managet to improve their fix times. Can you tell me wich program exactly you are using?
strange. i never had problems with gps. very fast . newest firmware from hp site ,and 3 different roms, original 6.0 and 2 roms with 6.1 . Igo,garmin etc.
Some more info
Really. Which program do you use, so i can try with it too.
I spoke to HP support and they said that it depends on the GPS software if it will use the aGPS function, so we have to check if the software we use is compatable with tha Qualcomm 6820 gps chipset of the ipaq.

I just got finally put on TomTom 7. Damn what an improvement. Worked out the bugs and the POI's are much better. But it also takes up 1.8 gb. Well worth it though.
Issue with Amaze
I would just like to say to anybody who installs this software must have gps/compatible rom and have quick gps installed. It works directly with quick gps for the agps feature. So if it says 'connection problem' then check to make sure quick gps is installed.
It worked fine for me and I don't have QuickGPS installed. I do have the aGPS enabled tho, so I get 10-15 second locks.

So far
I would have to say that it is no TT7 killer... not really close.
BUT!!!
A VERY nice app ESPECIALLY considering the price. If you are to factor in the price then it just might be competing with any software.
Not as intuitive/predictable as TT nor does it have the bells and whistles of predictive input and such nor is the GUI as well laid out... but again... my earlier statement stands

Quick gps
I don't know how to respond to that only that when I removed quick gps amaze stopped functioning, when I reinstalled it went right back to working. I get a lock on average in 3 seconds, never more than 5. Maybe it has something to do with St. Pete, I don't know. But I try to confuse it and start it in random places and it doesn't seem to phase it. Google maps takes always less than 10 seconds. Hey for those who are downloading amaze check out the hybrid feature, and then put the 3d map on. It is trippy having the sattellte images to drive through!!!
Apparently Hybrid maps aren't available everywhere, I live in a small town in SE Iowa and no satellite or hybrid maps show up.
But the normal maps are fine with me for now. Tho I only have 1X data, so I can't really use a GPS tool that relys on data as nobody can call me when I'm using it.
So TomTom and Igo still are my preferred tools. But this one is definately cool and I'll probably use it late at night or when I don't want to be disturbed.
BTC
Solution
Here's what you do: come down here to tampa where the water is fine, the *****es are finer, and the amaze gps thrives and you can drive through a 3 dimensional satallite enhanced map.
P.S. I use call firewall when using gps. No body is that important to interupt my data connection.
This program is pretty good for a freebie.
Really Nice!!
can't believe its free cause it works...
I am runnng the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=424387 and amAze runs great.. drove to work with it, intentionally took different roads and it adapted pretty quick..
thanks for the great find..........
Can't really argue with a free gps program and i also am running it really well without quick gps installed.
Free?
Can you be sure? How do the people who developed it recover their investment? Is there any way to be certain that you won't be sending any information from your phone that could cause trouble for you later on?
I get suspicious when someone offers something for free that everyone else is charging (close to three figures) for their similar product. If the method they make money from were more obvious, then I would feel a little more confidant that I would not be sorry later on, because they would be jeopardizing an income stream and a possibly successful business if they were somehow found to be "cheating".
It's documented on their website that they recoup their investment through built-in, targeted advertising. This feature is not yet implemented in the Windows Mobile version, but is quite active in the Java based versions of the app that have been around for about a year.

Quite the newb here. I'm running Amaze GPS on my HTC Raphael (ATT Fuze). Too cheap to buy data plan. I flashed to NATFv4, trying to (may not be doing it correctly) use GPS Tool to get a fix, but it seems to be looping infinitely. Consequently, I can't get Amaze to work. Any help appreciated.
Sorry to dissapoint
Amaze is a strictly internet map driven navigation software. No data plan no gps. Invest in IGo or garmin.

HTC Snap, GPS not detecting satellites

I can't get a satellite lock on my HTC Snap.
I have enable "use GPS" in google maps. google maps will search for satellites and after sometime come back saying weak signal & some recomendations to look for clear view of the sky.
Garmin XT also can't search GPS satellites. I install GPS Test, it seems that there's a GPS hardware but somehow the signal reception is super weak.
I have sent my Snaps to HTC service center and the best thing they can do is change the mainboard. This also show no result.
Anybody, please help. i'm starting to get frustrated with this GPS issue...
Bing GPS
I use the Bing app and have similar issues establishing GPS signal. This is my first GPS device so I'm not sure if this is normal, or if the phone is crap for GPS, or if I'm doing it wrong. I try to keep the QuickGPS updated, but that doesn't seem to help. I thought AGPS was supposed to be fast, but faster compared to what? Maybe this is 'fast' for GPS. I have seen friend's full on GPS devices and they seem to pickup pretty quick. So... who knows?
One thing to definitely try is make sure quickgps is up to date and automatically downloading. garmin could NOT find my location without that up to date and it would show one red bar signal strength. once i loaded up quickgps, updated it, and ran garmin again, full green signal.
It's The GPS Hardware ...
I've tried it all with my Dash 3G -- and concluded that it's the GPS in the phone that is garbage. I've since switched back to my trusty OnCourse Bluetooth GPS and I get a lock in Google Maps in less than 30 seconds and in Garmin XT in less than 10. IMHO, the GPS is certainly a weakness on this phone.
It finally sunk in for me when I lost signal 9 times while walking a few miles down Beacon Street in Boston. Holding the phone in my hand it kept dropping the signal over and over again. So I gave up. Built in GPS is handy in a pinch (when you have 30 minutes to wait for it to find a signal) but for serious navigating I use my Bluetooth GPS exclusively now.

I completely agree. Simply because something is not working like it should for these others does not mean that the GPS is not good. I use garmin xt with my ozone and its is extremely fast at updating my position as i'm driving along.
Problem solved
Let say that i'm in a really bad luck. this is my first GPS device and its not working. After the 2nd time come out from the service center (2nd concecutive mainboard), then the GPS is functioning, normaly....
my maple can get lock on GPS signal quite fast. with AGPS updated, it can get signal lock within seconds (given you have a clear sky view). i found that it could takes some time for Garmin XT to get GPS signal, so I use GPS Test to speed up the process then start the Garmin XT.
so for those who can't get GPS signal. it's definitely your hardware. I also found that the online customer service officer at HTC is just a mere lips service / useless. they keep telling me to be patient and patient without real action.
There's a free GPS testing tool for Windows Mobile called GPS Test. Once that set up, you can find out which serial port is used by the GPS receiver in your Windows Mobile, and set Google Maps GPS setting accordingly. Once it's set up, Google Maps can easily find multiple satellites if you're on open space. Once it's using GPS, your location on Google Maps will be a pin point, rather than a large circle denoting your approximate location.
PS: Found out with GPS Test that my GPS receiver in my Snap is using COM4 port at 9600 bps

WIND Mobile HTC Maple users not getting GPS working PLEASE READ!
I went through four HTC Maples (two accounts each 1st phone was a warranty exchange for another non-related problem). Each of the four Maples could not lock in single GPS satellite. WIND tech support had no clue after many calls and tests run at their tech support offices in Toronto. WIND recommended that I get in contact with HTC directly to see if they might have a solution.
One call to HTC started the ball rolling and setup a trouble ticket. Within 3 days and about seven call backs to trouble shoot, HTC had the solution and both of our Maples now have fully functioning GPS with Google Maps.
The problem was in the ROMs that had an old version of Google Maps (both their WM 6.1 and WM 6.5 HTC Maple ROM for WIND accounts).
Solution: using the Maple's browser go to m.google.com/maps and install the latest version. Problem solved!

Thanks for updating the link.
I have tried both of the CABs for the non Nokia and both make no difference if you
can't get a GPS lock. AGPS simply does not work using the latest Google maps CAB
available.
The "FF Ultimate aGPS Tweak_supl.google_Generic.cab" actually makes Google Maps
take forever to just start up after being installed and still no location is updated
indoors. Also, the phone will not snyc now with the desktop and this is after three
soft resets.
Even worse is the fact the phone now runs slow as hell. Everything takes forever
to open and is VERY sluggish.
Installed the other CAB "FF Google aGPS Settings Generic.cab" and still the same
problems. What could be the problem?
Finally got fed up with the POS CAB and uninstalled it. So far I've notice that the
phone has recovered its speed opening items and the right ones not like before
with that POS CAB which would cause all kinds of problems. Snyc now works
and so this looks like I'm back in business minus the fact I still can't get the aGPS
to work.
Oh well, you can't win them all...

True that QuickGPS is supposed to assist in faster GPS detection. However I am not sure how much faster, I mean by how many seconds faster (no empirical measure). From my experience, satellite detection without QuickGPS updated for a few weeks, is still quite fast, a few ten seconds - but still dependant on the sky/cloud condition. I am talking from where I live - equatorial. I am not sure about north of the tropics (Europe and N.America)
A definite no!
You do not need a data plan to use the GPS! Depending on which cellular company you go with, some of their people will try to tell or sell you on a plan. You do not need it.
For WM 5 and above, it is recommended that you let WM manage your GPS for all programs. To do this go to the System Settings tab and select the External GPS app (why it is called external is beyond me). Then move through the tabs to configure the GPS. Ideally, use a port that is not in use. I typically use 9. Then click the box to have WM manage the GPS for all programs that need data from it.
Now, you just need software and there is plenty of free programs out. One utility I recommend is GPS Toggle (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-gps-toggle.html ). This small Today screen plug-in will turn on the Jade GPS to quote warm it up for you. If the GPS has not been turned on in awhile, it can take up to 10 minutes or longer to have it lock onto four satellites which is what is considered necessary for satellite navigation (satnav). During this period, the satellites will use your time signal as one of the primary pieces of info to sync your GPS. Then based upon the positon of the satellites, they will identify your location. Once they have downloaded enough data to the GPS and are in sync, your GPS will become satnav capable.
Another app you might to look at is GPSToday (http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-gpstoday-v0-9.html#). I recommend setting this app as separate one and not a Today screen plug-in but that is your choice after reviewing what it is capable of doing. I love that it can geotag pictures taken by Jade which basically takes quote dumb or pictures that do not have typical computer info written into them. You can even use it to mark where you parked your car (at a stadium or large event), store the coordinates and have it navigate back to your car. Another good use is for geocaching.
These are just two small apps. What you really want now is iGO8 (highly recommended), TomTom or another commercial software program.

If you look here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=472110&highlight=gps+software), it might give you an idea. iGo8 has been used on Jade.

Yeah, I was in there. It's just that the website said that it was for the iPhone and it looked like it was for Europe only. Nevermind, I am just dopey. I see that it is also for America and Canada.

how does gps work on da phone

oi guys ive had a look at a few of those suggested threads about gps and yeah nah they dont really answer my question so feel free to link me to a thread if it answers my question
ok so, what the go.. the phone has gps.. but it doesnt work like a gps device eg navman, tomtom etc.. or does it? i've tried stock froyo and cyanogenmod using that google car app and then going to navigation, but it just keeps searching for a signal for ever. i dont want to use data cause it costs money and defeats the purpose of having a gps.. that is if the phone gps actually works like a gps device. if not then thats pretty bad advertising. anyways let me know, cheers
Mine gets connected to satelites on few seconds, performs as good as my Tom Tom does,i am using Navigon app&maps.
the latest google maps has offline support so you wouldnt need data...
what??! thats rediculous! i left mine in that navigation mode where it was looking for navigation or something like that and the gps symbol was flashing for like 15 min straight as i drove to work and nothing! is it meant to take that long?
EDIT: ok i opened up maps with wifi and it went through all that first time use crap. and so it was using wifi and gps it looked like and that was working. but then when i disabled wifi none of the maps load. only the maps that i had previously loaded while on wifi. wtf? arent maps installed..????????? therefore it should just load them.. what the #%^% im starting to get really pissed off with how stupid this design is. the maps are there, cause theyre installed, and the gps is there so.............. what the ^%#* is its problem?
your right it will only save maps you have browsed while on wifi...i believe there is a setting that overrides this though...

do you know where this setting is? oh and i got the gps to work ie i got it to find me and all that. i did some reading and with gps on most phones the first time they connect it takes a while cause its gotta do all this satellite scanning and then eventually it goes yep ok hes in this part of the country, lets set him up with these satellites and so from then on it connects with gps a lot faster
First of all: the design is just great, you are the stupid.
How GPS work on dah phone ? well just like any other GPS: it receives signal from a few satellites around and it find your position based on the time laps between the reception of each signal (signal come with a time sync).
Now, how WELL does the Legend's GPS work ? as good as any other GPS: very nice in a car or outdoor, but very badly indoor and if it was unable to find your position for 15 minute I'm pretty sure you were indoor (or maybe outdoor in a big city).
Also on smartphone's GPS the data connection can help the GPS itself by downloading some data which will speed up the localisation by satellite, but this is not mandatory and if you're not connected you will end up being positionned. It will only take a few minutes (less than 15)
Finally about the navigation system (which is a bit different of GPS itself) Google's is fairly different than other software because it doesn't come with maps but it download them as you need them:
pros:
-maps are always up to date
-you don't have to waste 2Gb or more on your microSD to store them
-it's free !
cons:
-requires data connection (unlimited download recommanded)
If you prefer usual navigation software, feel free to use co-pilot or navigon or tomtom or any of the other regular software. But you'll have to pay (or crack) them.

whoa whoa whoa hang on now. lets not go throwing the word stupid around especially if you didnt even understand what i meant or you assumed i didnt know how gps works in the first place.
my general question was that it wasnt connecting to gps and the maps werent showing so im thinking you need data for the maps to show even though you have the maps installed, and secondly im thinking something is wrong with my gps or maybe it doesnt work like a normal device navman, tomtom etc because its been half an hour and still no connectivity. then i answered my own question as usual via the internet from other forums i found using google which explained what i said above.
basically with normal gps devices they are already setup with a region.. thingy or whatever it is built into the gps device. this means the first time you connect its actually quite quick because it already has an idea where you are in the world. however with phones, they apparently dont have this so the process of connecting for the first time can range from 3 min, instantly or up to 3 hours like numerous people claimed it had taken for their phones. as for mine it took just over half an hour and now it works fine.
the only question left over now is apparently you can get the maps to show without a data connection through some option change in the settings as someone mentioned a bit earlier.
dont go throwing stupid around mate or assuming anything cause now who looks stupid. besides the design is quite silly since none of this was explained. when they say the phone has gps people (like me) generally go oh wow like those car gps' and expect them to work like that. so when they dont we become a bit skeptical and i was right to do so because look at all this crap ^^^that ive discovered. anyways like i said theres still one stupid thing left about all this which is why data is needed to view maps that are already installed. its like those video games that you install and require you to be on the net to play
You were the one throwing stupid at the design while you still seem to misunderstand how google nav (quit calling it GPS please) works.
Maps are not completely loaded, they're only stored in the cache and that's true only for one scale, and around one place. You can hardly use that to explore the map offline not even mentionning navigating.
The new feature only allow google nav to keep guiding you if you lose connection for a little while. But you can't really use it offline.
I think that design is just awesome, although I have an unlimited data connection. If you don't have that kind of service you should take a look at usual GPS softwares.
And I'm not assuming anything, you asked "how GPS works" not "how google nav works"

ugh forget it, i already answered my own question and now you're just being picky and all technical when no one really cares. i think 99% get what i mean so i dont care
GPS is working great. Google Maps is the "problem", more precisely not a real problem but the way it was designed. Unlike other GPS navigation software, the maps are not stored locally but in a cache. The latest version seems to have an offline mode but I didn't tested so I can't say if it's totally offline or not. If you want navigation without using your data connection or WiFi, switch to TomTom, iGO, or similar instead.
That's why Google Maps has only couple of MB and iGO for ex. has over 2 GB with all maps loaded...the difference is the space occupied by the maps.
P.S. And yes, first GPS lock is acquired a little bit later.

thank you. that clears it all up
now to that other guy, wouldnt it have been easier to just say that ^
I use Igo for my offline nav. It works just like a tom tom. For my geocaching needs, I use geobeagle.
