Max size MiniSD card? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Is there a limitation with X7501/WM6 devices in the size of the expansion card? 1, 2, and 4Gb cards are common and cheap, but then there is 16Gb Class 6, cards coming out:
http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/20/patriot-16gb-sdhc-card-hits-retail/
Capacities like that are starting to push the Athena into the realm of UMPC's which have 32Gb SSD's.
Anyone care to comment?

that a SDHC not "mini SDHC"

4GB is the MAX current size Mini-SDHC card that will work in the Athena

I read in another thread that someone has bought a 6 gb micro sd just recently. This should work on our device if we use the micro to mini conversion jacket.

Mini SD Card for X7501 Advantage

I just bought my X7501 Advantage from Amazon and I want to get a storage card but I had a few questions that I can't find the answers to (the first three).
1. What is an HC card (as in SDHC) and how is it different than an SD card that is a mini SD?
2. What is the biggest mini SD card available? I read on several sites that SanDisk was coming out with an 8GB this summer but I can't find it anywhere. Is it out yet and if not does anyone know if it will be in the next month?
3. Can a micro SD card be used in the X7501 Advantage with an adapter?
4. What cards do people like with the Advantage (that run fast/well)?
Thank you for your time and assistance.
1) HC stands for High Capacity. Think of it in terms of standard SD cards being formatted in FAT16 and the SDHC cards are FAT32.
2) As far as I have seen the 4GB SDHC Mini is still the largest although they reportedly can go to 8GB, 16GB and top out at 32GB but have not yet done so.
3) I have not tried micro SD, but using the micro in a mini adapter should look the same to the device. I believe that the limit on micro is 2GB at present.
4) I use the Transcend 4GB mini SDHC (2) of them from Meritline in California. They have been reliable. As for speed, I have not tested that as I have not had any application which demanded really high speeds.

I'm using the Kingston 4gb one in a x7501 from Newegg class 6 (might as well get the faster one, for the couple $ over the class 2 or 4)

Wow! Thanks for all the useful information both of you! One question. What is class 6 versus, 4, versus 2, etc. Does anyone know of a place where this is all explained? I take it class 6 is better. Is that right?
I really appreciate this. It helps a lot!

2 4 or 6 mb/sec speed rating .. 6 is better but not sure it makes much diff in the pda's, as they can't typicaly transfer as fast as the card is capable of.
more details at KINGSTON's web site

Thank you everyone for the info! I'm going to go read up on it now!
I have a 4gb microsd card that goes back and forth between the N95 and the X7501. It works great with no problems!

microSDHC cards on Advantage via micro to mini adaptor?

I'm looking to finally jump in and pick up an Advantage, but would like to skip the micro-sd format. If I pick up a 4GB microSDHC card with adaptor so it can be used in a miniSD slot, like this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134528
...is there any reason the Advantage wouldn't read it? Has anyone tried this?
Thanks,
Galt
I use microSD with adaptor. It work
Thanks, good to know.
Is there any reason you don't just buy a 4Gb MiniSD? That's what I have in my Athena and I use it alongside the MicroDrive.

I kinda feel like mini is already a dead format, most new HTC devices use micro, so I don't want to invest in it. Also, I'm buying the Advantage as kind of a temporary device, I think I'll be replacing it in less than a year with a device that likely uses micro. If I bought mini it'd be a waste.
I'm sure they will have changed format again in a year! LOL

Maximum Capacity for mini is 4gb, whereas it is 6gb for micro at the moment..

Now that is a reason - if you want 6Gb now.I have a 4Gb Mini in my Athena now and if I get a device that takes Micro in a years time I'm sure larger capacites will be available.
And it does beg the question 'Can the Advantage read 6Gb cardsor is 4Gb the max'. Am I right in presuming that if it can read a4Gb SDHC (as opposed to SD) card, then it should be able to read a 6GB SDHC card OK?
Has anyone actually tried a 6Gb card?
And if they do work am I going to buy one. I know I shouldn't but.....
I'm using a Kingston 4GB SDHC with a mini adapter on my Dopod U1000 (still original firmware). Performance is faster than the in-build Microdrive. 4GB is the smallest SDHC capacity. It is not a problem to use a 6GB or even the 8GB SDHC from Kingston.

How is this possibe? SDHC is bigger than miniSDHC. How is it possible to insert the bigger size SDHC into the smaller miniSDHC slot?
Cause hes actualy talking about a MicroSD to MiniSD adapter..Duh..

He said SDHC, which has the 8 GB capacity. The largest microSDHC capacity is only 6 GB, so I think this is not what he meant.
Not so fast.. 8GB MicroSD has already been announced, and will be hitting stores soon, if not already.. MicroSD is also SDHC Compatible. Besides have you ever thought he OP, might have missed/left a word out?

Correct, OP meant to say he wanted to use micro to mini adaptor to avoid miniSD format.
I'm not aware that kingston already sells 8gb microSDHC. That's good news if this is true. Any head up on where I can source this? Samsung's is still vapourware (2008 availability) AFAIK.
Samsung, Sandisk and Toshitba all have plans for 8GB in the works.
One of them will be selling soon, as opposed to 1-2 yrs from now..
Sorry for the confusion. I have a Kingston 4GB microSDHC in a mini adapter on my Dopod U1000 (original firmware). My friend has a SanDisk 6GB microSDHC (bought in the US) also in a mini adapter on his Dopod U1000 (upgraded to Dopod WM6). The Kingston 6GB microSDHC is expected in the stores in Kuala Lumpur around Christmas (according to the local distributor) and the 8GB microSDHC sometime Q2 2008.
When I bought mine just a couple of months ago, they only had 4 GB max. Soon, we'll have double that amount. Wow, this is just fantastic. As big as our harddrive! What speed class would it be I wonder. I'm going to put all my musics in there. Currently I'm constrained by the lack of capacity, and am using multiple miniSD to swap in and out. In future I won't need to do that anymore.
8 GB available in UK NOW
8 GB available in UK NOW yep carphone wherehouse are selling 8GB micro sd's now 70.00GBP so we can have 16gig in total WOW i want one once confirmed these work with athena unless i get the shift.....

Really BIG storage cards

Can the Sprint Touch handle a 6, 8, 12, 16 or 32gb MicroSD card? I know it advertises up to 4gb, but 4gb is MicroSDHC and the HC 2.0 cards all use the same format, so I'm hoping the 4gb limit was theoritical bacause that was all that was available at press time.
Anyone tried larger than 4gb sizes???
Thanx in advance...
Ya, cards over 4gb are supported. I think the largest available card at this moment is 8gb (working fine), but theoretically cards up to SDHC's 32gb max should be supported.
I have a 6GB at the moment and is working great
Thanx ... I'll have to get an 8gb today. Tomorrow a 32... Day after tomorrow? Your guess is as good as mine =)
You can get these things just about anywhere, but I've had real good luck in the past with SuperMediaStore.com in the past, and they have 8gb for $89.99. Thanx again...
6 Gig card
I have been using 6 Gig card for 3 months without any problems.
ive got an 8GB in their now, works just a-ok
Only thing I haye is how the Music Store only works with 2GB cards and lower.

I flashed a ROM from ppcgeeks and it has the music store working again on my 4gb sdhc. I was flabber-gasted!!!
Here is the link (v6)
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=17963
Does the touch actually see the whole card though? I have a Treo 700wx and there is a patch to allow the use of sdhc cards but any card over 4gb reads as only 4gb.You can put more data on the card and the treo will read it but if you try and save anything to the card it says it is full. Also if it works does anyone know if the larger sdhc cards work in the mogul?
Thanks
SDHC patch
I know this thread is a bit old but can someone post the link to a patch to use sdhc on the 700wx.
Thank you in advance,

Micro SD is right. When it comes to size i'm not sure. I know the HTC Touch Pro goes up to 32GB so I guess the X1 will do that as well...
Are there even 16 GByte microSD cards available yet?
I've seen no shop selling them so far.
Mobymemory.com has a preorder for 16GB
http://www.mobymemory.com/micro-SD.asp
Amazon also have a preorder Sandisk 16GB card 'available':

Memory card

Can any X1 user help me out, here?
My X1 should arrive tomorrow, and as far as i am aware, here in the UK we are not getting a memory card in the box.
So, Am i looking to buy a simple Micro SD card, or does this device support Micro SD HC?
Thanks for any useful answers. I just dont want to have to go and exchange after buying.

It supports microSDHC up to 32GB (when it's released).
yup, I'm using a 16gb micro SDHC card (can't wait for the 32gb to become available!)
I bought an 8gb SanDisk Micro SDHC card on Amazon for £14 and it works great in the X1
Thanks, peeps. I was thinking about getting 2 8Gb cards, so i'll probably check out Amazon, amongst others.
I find 2 cards better than just 1 for my own needs. Thats kinda why i needed confirmation of HC support.
Thanx again, and stay happy, all.

For me its kinda easy to lose those small cards. I have one in my phone and one in my laptop for ready boost and I always seem to forget there is a 4gig in my laptop.

It says that X1 supports microsdhc in the whitepaper. And I can also confirm that Sandisk 16Gb microsdhc works well in my X1.

I haven't noticed something like that. At least with PocketPlayer.
Micro SDHC Class 2 or 6 ?
Hi,
AFAIK the 16 GB Micro SDHC are currently only available with Class 2 speed.
Is this sufficient for the X1 ?
Or is there any advantage using a Class 6 Micro SDHC ?
AFAIK these are currently only available upto 8 GB like the SanDisk Mobile Ultra series.
Any recommendations?
Thanks you.
Regards,
Andreas
