Enlarge your today screen (how to remove the bottom menu bars) - Touch GSM General

If you're looking to get rid of the menu bar at the bottom of the Today Screen, read on. This is not a new tip, but might save you time, as there's a lot of different versions of these programs flying around. Only the one below works on WM6 / HTC Touch.
I personally find that the Menu Bars at the bottom of the Today Screen really spoil the look of the HTC Touch's sleek black/grey theme. Besides, the Comm Manager and Contacts are both accessible via the spinning cube (or the camera button if you install Double Launcher) so there's no need to have on the Today Screen, you may as well get more space for plugins, or just to keep everything looking neat and tidy. See screenshot below!
Here's how to banish them forever (?!) :
1. Download ToggleTodayIIAlpha from this link:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/releases/vjtoggletodayii/vjtoggletodayiialpha.exe
2. Copy it to your \Windows\Startup directory. (or somewhere else and paste a shortcut instead)
3. Go into the registry and edit this key:
HKLM/Software/Vijay555/VJTodayToggle
Change these keys:
Softkeysize = 1
StartSize = 26
TrayVisible = 1
That's it! I've had no massive problems with this so far, although I haven't been testing it for too long. I'd be interested to hear how people get on in terms of stability/bugs. You WILL get problems if you try to use any of the older VJTodayToggle programs in the thread on this forum:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243211
(SIP keyboard staying on, SIP moving to the top of the screen, menu titles disappearing but not the background, etc.)
...in fact, that's precisely why I'm sharing this info with you, as this thread is 39 pages long and it's only towards the end that things become totally clear! I'll post again if there's any unexpected side-effects, I'm currently minimising BatteryStatus and I don't know whether this will
Good luck!
Carlos
NOTES / ADVANCED
=======================
A: If you want to make your screen even neater AND still overclock your Touch, then, in step 3 above, you can make TrayVisible=0 then you can minimise the BatteryStatus plugin and it won't show up on your today screen. (right click on batterystatus icon, choose 'show rows -> minimise') I haven't tested this properly yet.
B: If you want to explore hiding the Start Menu, feel free, it looks superb when you first do it, but then I have found that the HTC biotouch (spinning cube) automatically re-instates the start menu bar when it's deactivated each time.
C: Please note, this program ( tt2.exe) DOES NOT TOGGLE, even though it's called that! Again, it's a 39 page thread, I warned you...
D: You can also run TT2.exe with a -config option to avoid editing the registry, but this would actually make the above even more long-winded to explain to any n00bs.
E: A nice new HTC wallpaper is doing the rounds without the logo. (As you can see from my screenshot, it's mis-positioned with the extra screen space) See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319830
F: Vijay555 has been meaning to release a new (non-alpha) version of the software for some time, but sounds pretty busy. He seems like an all-round splendid guy though and I'd like to thank him for this software and his continued postings/programming.

I have the HTC X7500 WM6 and I've been desperate to make it works.
I've been trying other version from the 40 pages thread, so I'll try this one and I will post result.

Good luck! The honest truth is that after I'd posted this, I discovered a couple of bugs that appeared in soak testing. I gave up in the end - it worked 90% but I would still occasionally get conflict, e.g. the SIP keyboard would appear at the top of the screen sometimes and only a soft reset would put it back where it was meant to be!

Yep I confirm that, SIP keyboard is there, and sometimes as well softkeys stay there after softreset.
Well actually for me it's even worse, it's hiding the system tray (the bar just above the softkeys bar) where we can add shortcuts icons and keep the softkeys bar enabled..
Im disappointed but thks for vijay555 for all the efforts

Perfect... without HTC Logo is even better...
Thanks Carlos,
I've just installed and its working fine. With the clean background from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=319830 looks even better.
Cheers,
Marcelo

See my original post, have you tried setting TrayVisible=1 in the registry, this should show the system tray.

I followed exactly what u posted, it displayed it correctly the first time, then after soft reset it was displaying only the softkeys bar and hiding the system tray bar
Thks anyway

How does this look on screens BESIDES the today screen? I have used other programs on different WM phones in the past and although the bottom bar disappears on the today screen, it is still on other screens.
Also, can you use the bottom of the screen or is it just dead space? Some of us have moved the HTC Home Plug to the bottom of the page and if it is just dead space, it is going to look bad....

The menu bar is visible on other screens, this behaviour is by design. I cannot see why anybody would want it invisible on other screens, as you normally need those softkeys for menus in most programs!
As far as I know you can use the bottom of the screen, it is not dead space. But why not try it out - it's unlikely to do any harm. You can always delete it from your startup directory to uninstall if you don't want it.

Well it works well so far.....(Not my screen, Neo's screen @ HoFo)

I can't remember if the TrayVisible setting even works - I think it was something I was intending to build in, but never got around to it.
Apologies... I'm kinda programming again, had lots going on, so never finished the app. Sorry for you guys having to use my unfinished piece of cr*p. I'll make it work properly one day!

How did you "move" the HTC Home plugin to the bottom part of the Today-screen without any plugin above it? I searched all over the forums, but I cannot find the answer to this question

Use the HTC Home customizer to "unlock" it. Then you can move it around like normal.
However, it doesn't redraw correctly on the right side if you unlock it, and a scrollbar comes and goes.

i have a other solution!! PCM shrink installe it and your bar remove it s very easier! For become to the original config juste delete the programmz!!

won't stick
Hi..very nice and easy Zip File..just one problem: the toggle won't stick after a soft reset = one has to go into File Explorer..double click the Toggle File and only than the screen is "clean" again.
Any way to make the toggle "stick"?

I have not this problem! I install the cab i going on the explorer and today shrink and clik on after i reboot my pda ans the bar not appear ... You can try put a abbreviated of today skrink in WINdows/started for star the application automatic on windows sartup
the result of the appl:

I have this running at startup on my Tilt, works with screen rotations and everything! And the hard keys are still mapped to calendar and contacts for quick access, awesome.
Many thanks, couldn't stand those useless soft keys before.

Fun with Scrollbars

Okay - I know how to change the width of scroll bars but what I am wondering is if there is a way to control where the start or end. Basically, I like to display my calender on my screen and I prefer the Calender app to the Today Agenda plugin included in the Faria ROM. When I get lots of appointments it puts scroll bar on the front screen.
Problem is that these start below the date line and block off part of the screen that I want to see. As you can see from the attached screen shot, the right hand side of the PhoneAlarm control panel is not visible, so I cannot see signal strength. I know I can see it at the top, but let's just say I am anal like that
What I wondering is if there is a way to force the scroll bars to start below the speed dial plug-in?
I don't think so. But if you use a different plugin for your calendar, then some of those can have a fixed size and their own scroll bar. I use Pocket Breeze and have mine set up just for that reason. PB has a scrollbar but the whole screen does not.
BTW: What is the tool bar right under your Date plugin???
BTW: What is the tool bar right under your Date plugin???
it's phonealarm,
i second 'the change the today agenda plugin height'
and also try out vijay's toggle to gain screen space
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=243211
The tool under the date plugin is PhoneAlarm.
It's a great tool, and Bruce the author is a great developer, but I've had a few troubles >= WM5.
But, I love the app, and AlarmToday.
dcdivenut: regarding the scrollbars, it is possible but a little complicated and you have to registry edit, so backup first.
1. Backup Registry, then using a good registry editor go to
HKLM > Software > Microsoft > Today > Items
2. Find the Plugin you want to be scrollbar less, eg in my case VJAudioNotes.
3. Glance through the entries and find the one that says "Type". Double click type and change the value to 5
4. Go into Settings > Today and make some minor change to your today screen to force it to refresh (or just soft reset). Hopefully the changes will now be reflected.
This will force the plugin to the top of the screen and force scrollbars to occur under that plugin.

Thanks
Thanks for the ideas (and sorry for the delay in gratitude, it has been a crazy day at work!)
The bar is indeed phoneAlarm and I am using the B&W Pure skin in minimized mode. It is a VERY useful tool that adds true profile capability with both time and activity based profile switching. The product has great support (forum based) and the next version (1.6) is in beta right now. There is also a lite version.
I will try some of the solution suggested and see what I can make work. I really wanted to stay away from utilizing another app just to prevent scroll bars so I will give vijay's process a shot and see what happens.
Worked perfectly
I tried Vijay's suggestion and it worked perfectly. Then for kicks and giggles I tried it with Battery status as well and it worked there too, forcing the scrollbar below that. Then I tried it with the photo dialer and it would not take so this is where I am at now, which is definitely a situation I can live with. Thanks Vijay!!

hide bottom/softkey bar when sip active??

ive been trying to figure out how to do this for a loooong time. i use pcm keyboard with an iphone skin and its HUGE. it plus the bottom bar take up more than half the screen. plus its easier to type/know where the letters are if the keyboard is all the way on the bottom. i use a hardware key to toggle the sip so i don't need the bottom bar to disable the sip. anybody know if its physically possible to hide the bottom bar when the sip is active (or make the sip cover the bottom bar)???
Edit (11/21/2008):
if anyone is interested in this i might have some info you might find useful:
when i use the attached .tsk file, the behaviour of my tob and bottom bars becomes completely unpredictable. basically i end up with a combination one of the following combinations:
-normal topbar
-no topbar
-"transparent" topbar (so that i see the top few pixels of my spb mobile shell theme)
and..
-normal bottom bar
-no bottom bar
-bottom bar on which the keyboard overlays (when activated) << this is the original desired effect!
see the attached images for examples
i can't just keep this theme because behaviour is unpredictable and sometimes causes freezing. Also, choosing a different theme returns the bars to normal behaviour.
other info: i have t-mobile wing and use an open touch v6 rom, spb mobile shell w/ a greatbal diamond theme, and s2u2.
That's my problem too.
Support.
Never heard on anything that will do this. But it's a very good idea.
vijay555 made an tool called today toggle that did that on the today screen (I don't know if it hid the softkeys when the today screen did not have focus). It was originally written for WM2003. I have not seen much about it in a long time. Try checking his website http://www.vijay555.com
i did read alot about VJ's todaytoggle but i assumed and other people confirmed that it only works on the today screen. i guess ill play around with it when i get a chance and report back here

New Landscape Today Screen

Hi,
I have posted this in the General Kaiser section but I guess it has been totally disregarded.
I know that there is an issue with landscape using programs such as Manilla2D. Instead of trying to reprogram and re-icon everything on there, I purpose we do this.
We know that on the Tilt, when you slide out the keyboard, a "program/registry" on there invokes a file to play a sound. Why don't someone write a small program where, instead of invoking a .wav file, when you slide open the keyboard, you start SecondToday? So when you open, SecondToday kicks in and shows you a homescreen that you can customize, and when you slide keyboard back in, it opens SecondToday again so that Manilla2D is show in portrait?
Any thoughts?
Rytt
ATT Tilt
Apr 29 Dutty's No Cube Rom
Its a smart idea, but I'm pretty sure that'll just slow the device down beyond anything and before you know it- you'd regret opening the phone
What's supposed to happen if your trying to type a text message?
If this is the case, everytime you open the keyboard, the new home screen will appear.
I rather have a functioning homescreen then a half cropped one. I would do it but I have no idea how to go about it. As it stands now, there is no solution to Manilla2D or any other today screen except a long time reworking the coding.
Someone who can write this little program can always have an option to not display SecondToday unless you are in the Today screen.
Anyways, i have tried installing Secondtoday, copied the file into \Windows and changed the sliding sound from 0.wav to SecondToday.exe and it did not work.

I know, but the sliding event is set to play a sound file, not run an executible file.
as for the memory, I am running both Manilla2d and weatherpanel with the looping animated icons via secondtoday. It takes a little longer to load from a reset/first boot, but after that I switch between both today screens nearly instantaneously. I actually think you're on to something here. Dunno about other devices, but for us Kaiser owners, this could be something to look into - even if it turns out to be little more than proof of concept.
Wouldn't that effectively mean you have loaded all the plugins twice in the memory. Seems like a good concept, but the useable practicality of it is outweighed by the mem hogging / slowness it would produce imho.
Just look at this guys.
Touch Dual have this 'option'. when you slide out the keyboard it runs the HTC acton screen. nearly same thing does Raphael. So i think its just a matter of good registry tweaking here. Or maybe doing a small program for that. Just an idea.
You could look up the TouchDual.
Cheers,
Chris
ThrottleLauncher can do it.
Load the current ThrottleLauncher TF3D today screen. It has a completely different landscape setup (lots of create new email type buttons). Once you've established what your after, you can edit the XML files to create your own Today screens

Perhaps you should re-read the first quote.
Manilla2D was given as an exemplar of what one might do with a landscape today screen. The question was not limitted to this package. ThrottleLauncher is a perfect solution.
wouldn't any of this cause the screen orientation to take longer to switch?
Finally!
I am glad that some of you are thinking this is an great idea!
I hope it'll be pretty easy to come up with something like SecondToday. I don't mind it being slow but sitting at my computer looking at a messed up today erks me lol.

[REQ] Remove bottom menubar!

I could easily give some money if someone could make a program for making the bottom menu bar to hide and pressing like the big round bottom on phone would make it visible again. It would give alot more screen space for alot of programs, like writing sms etc.
It would be really great, I bet alot of people would like it to and also pay for it!
thanks

Great
It would be really good removing it, having more screen space like opera when browsing it goes to fullscreen and pressing on the screen will make the bar's and menues apear again. Something like that would be great for the rest of the phone!
Ok ill give 200sek for the one that fixes this mod!
hiding top and bottom menus! And makes them appear when wanted!
Questions? ask!
you can do that with vjtoggletoday (www.vijay555.com) and a tool for setting registry keys (the guy who has written batterystatus has also written such a tool).
create a lnk file with the desired settings and map it to a key. that should do it. but you only have one key available to map (long end key)
I've seen that toggletoday thingy but i think its for wm5. I've tried installing it but nothing happend.

I'd rather hide the menues completly. It would be really nice having a full screen phone. Now it looks more like a pda

vjtoggletoday works also on wm6. make sure it is the alpha2 version.
you can use the attached zip file. put the autorun lnk file into your windows startup folder and configure this utility before soft-reset.
advantage of vjtoggletoday is, you can define how much of the bars' height should disappear.
another app is dcinobar which hides the bottom bar only

I dont know what that apps did to my diamond. Im not setting that on autorun! And the config file how are you suppose to config it? When neither of them starts?
by the way: both apps (i have attached dcinobar to my post above) only hide the bars on the today screen only. the bars do not disappear if you run an app.
if this would help you to some extend, i'll give you a step-by-step instruction for vjtoggle.
dcinobar is easier. just run the tool.
Have you tried them on a diamond? Cause the dcinobar did nothing on my diamond.
And the other program i think i will need a step by step guide

dcinobar works definitely on diamond. i am currently using it myself.
as said. both programs only hide the bar on today screen.
dcinobar: just copy the exe file to \windows\startup\. softreset. that's it.
vjtoggle:
copy the vjtoggletodayiialpha.exe to \Program Files\vijay555\
(if you keep the directoryname, you do not need to adjust the lnk files)
copy the vjtoggletodayAutorun.lnk to \Windows\StartUp\
copy the VJ Toggle Config.lnk to \Windows\StartMenu\Programs\
now run the config tool and set the values to 0. the config tool only sets the registry keys which are being used by the file in the startup folder.
alternatively you could do the settings yourself:
Code:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Vijay555\VJTodayToggle]
"Enabled"=dword:00000001
"SoftKeySize"=dword:00000001
"StartSize"=dword:00000001
"TrayVisible"=dword:00000001
in this case the top and the bottom bar will have the size of 1px (just in case you still want to access them )
soft-reset.
if you do a soft-reset i would recommend to switch the phone off (long press on the button on the very top of your diamond).
if this is not working, you are definitely doing s.th. wrong as it works on my diamond.
post here if you need some more help.

[SKIN] WAD2 - Blackberry Bold 2.0 QVGA

For those new to this theme, the whole purpose (besides making a theme to look like AT&T's Blackberry Bold) was to do a theme that required ZERO swiping. Everything is accessible through simple pressing. By doing this, I have made (for me anyway) the most practical UI I can dream up. Getting to what you might need is very fast.
Problems:
1. This theme was designed for how I personally use my phone and I am sharing it with you. I mention that because it will explain why, in my rush to get it out there, I forgot to remap buttons to the generic programs like contacts and texting. Also, the programs pages are still linked to the programs I use. I apologize for that.
2. The weather icon in Portrait mode that appears on the dock with your calendar doesn't always appear correctly. Not sure why. You can still press the area to get to the forecast page. Everything appears correctly there.
Installation:
1. Unzip the file. You will see three folders.
2. Bold and Bold P belong in your WAD2 themes folder on your device.
3. There is a folder called "Themes". This has all of the images, including alternate backgrounds and the weather icons you see in the pictures, and it belongs in the root directory of your storage card.
Instructions for Use:
Portrait:
1. Everything is pretty obvious. You should know that the Calendar icon opens a dock containing 1 day of appointments and a weather icon with current temperature. Pressing the appointment will open a Calendar page. Pressing the Weather Icon or the Temperature will open a Weather page.
2. The Wifi icon in the upper right corner will toggle your Wifi on/off. If your Wifi is on, green lights will appear underneath.
Landcsape:
1. There's room for more icons so the instructions for Portrait do not apply.

Sorry. No VGA. Someone tried to direct me to an emulator where I could do one, but I couldn't even get the thing going.
great job oscarbum thks
need suggestion
hy,great theme there.
i'm a newbie and also working on a new theme my self.
but if you can help me,it seems i can't display an activesync status icon (using a full screen theme).
any suggestion?
That's something you might want to take up with Chris on the Lakeridge forum, since Active Sync is not one of your choices for a status icon.
On another note, I've been using this theme and it's previous incarnations for over a month. Would you believe tonight was the first time I needed to silence my phone? Needless to say, I couldn't through the theme and an update will be coming soon.
nevermind my bad

Enjoy. If you enjoy this theme, please feel free to donate to someone who doesn't rip off every icon, wallpaper, etc. from someone else.

Simply push the "x" button to get rid of the program that's there. Then click the empty box and assign it whatever you wish. Same concept as the M2D programs page.

Ah. No problem.
Go to Start Menu->Programs->Wisbar Advance Desktop->Author Menu. This will bring up the Author Menu on the main screen.
Click on Author Mode.
Now, press and hold on the icon you wish to change. A menu will pop up. Click on Properties.
Click on Edit Script.
Highlight Launch a Program, then press Edit.
Click on the ... button.
Choose the program you wish to use and hit Ok.
Press Done.
Press Done.
Press Done.
In an area of the screen with no buttons, press and hold until the Author Menu pops up again. Press Author Mode to turn it off. Very important since many a theme has gotten screwed up by forgetting this step.
And enjoy.

Is there any way to make the WiFi button a litte bigger so it is more finger friendly?
Also, any chance of adding a finger-friendly bluetooth icon on the left side of the clock (opposite WiFi icon)?
