Any way to auto-connect to GPRS? - Networking

Being an avid AIM user, I was curious as to whether or not there is a way for the phone to automatically connect to GPRS. I'm pretty sure there's no setting, however are there any programs out that will let me connect? I use Opera Mini as my web browser, so it becomes a chore having to load my Java application, then boot up Opera Mini, especially when all I really want to do is chat.
Any help guys?

maybe this will
http://www.gb-soft.cz/XDAII/product_gprs_tweak_en.htm

thanks for the link theres got to be a regedit that will allow us to do this so when ever the phone softresets and starts gprs will kick in on reboot?

i believe that program got an option to strt gprs when gsm radio starts
and i asume that the program alter some registrys which ones i'm not sure though

Rudegar
thanks mate, il have a play with the app when i get a chance and see if i can find out what reg keys are changed.

ok found a fix for this-
with the below reg hack - as soon as yiour device is soft reset and switched on GPRS will kick in automatically
HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Providers\{7C4B7A38-5FF7-4bc1-80F6-5DA7870BB1AA}\"connection name"\AlwaysOn = 1
and if you change that back to 0 it will go back to default.
peace out.

Installing O2 settings without the O2 interface, on UK XDA2

Got my new XDA2 today and have resolutely set about making it my own. With the various guides on this site and others, I've modified the Config.txt file in my Extended_ROM to remove the O2 Active interface from the machine when I do a hard reset. All looks good.
However, this means that the default O2 settings for SMS, GPRS and so on aren't installed either. There are two solutions:
- Either someone knows how to stop the O2Active interface running while preserving the installation of the O2 network settings at a hard reset, or;
- Someone knows what the settings should be for the O2 service in the UK, and wouldn't mind helping me set my machine up manually.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with either of these options!
PS. I got pass-through Internet connection working (when the XDA2 is docked) if the O2 settings weren't configured automatically, but never managed it with the thing O2-branded Another good reason to ditch the O2Active setup!
To stop active loading after powerup of soft reset simply remove its shortcut from the /windows/startup folder.
Perfect! Thanks, stryker. Didn't realise yet how all this works.
I took the opportunity to get rid of the Flashman apps from startup too, since nobody seems to need them, they eat into the precious 31 allowed processes, and I'll be synching all the time anyway. Anyone know of any other StartUp-folder items that can be safely removed? I'll be keeping the IA_Caller_ID for the moment, but what else could be stopped without causing a problem?
Any idea what USSD and stk are?
Cheers,
look in the comments at the bottom of this article.
stk = SIM Application Toolkit
BTIcon = BT icon in the Today screen
USSD.exe = unstructures supplementary service data (whatever that is)
Thanks to you too, tyfy. I've seen that article before in the last few days, but had forgotten it/ lost track of it, so cheers for reminding me.
I need to start building a list of all the tweaks I'm applying every time I do a hard reset. Things like removing these startup items, customising configuration etc. I've got a couple more days before my SIM is activated and I want to get it right before that happens. I need to get onto Handango too, and buy some of these power tools that people are raving about.
Got PocketQuake2 running last night, though It won't be staying - too slow, disk-hungry and difficult to control, but seriously cool!

PDANet tethering charges?

Just wondering, has anyone on Sprint who is using any form of tethering been able to confirm and charges for use with or without a PAM plan? I have tried ICS and PDANet and both work perfectly, PDANet claims to be "under the radar" to Sprint but I would like some outside party to confirm this
yep, pdanet fools the network to think that you are using the phone to surf (which is fine) and that means u DO NOT need the PAM plan.
Yeah I can confirm this. It works AMAZING! No charges. I wouldn't recommend downloading MP3's or anything like that because you don't want to throw up any red flags. In other words I definitely wouldn't want to ditch my residential DSL for this, but browsing should still be fine.
Hmm so Sprint know if you're using Internet Sharing App even if you ask it to connect to the Sprint Vision vs Phone as Modem? Well I'm keeping my fingers cross and hope that they don't I actually like that program, makes tethering so much easier.

i like PDAnet a lot, despite the fact that i have to soft reset my phone to get the PC app to see it
alau was referring (i think) to the internet sharing app in WM6, and said it was easy to use, i was basically stating PDAnet is just as easy (if not easier) to use
yep finally hearing you guys raving pdanet so much i decided to give it a shot and you know what... it's easy. the only reason why i haven't tried it sooner is because i only tether my phone to my computer on occations actually it's just to my carputer and since i don't have active sync installed on that it's kind of hard, but now that i know better
Thanks guys

Sprint knows if you're tethering using Internet Sharing. The point of programs like PDANet and USB Modem is that they mask the tethering so Sprint can't tell.
Sprint (and other carriers) detecting tether...
For info only... please verify these findings for yourself.
Sprint and other carriers use the NAI info from your handset to determine whether you're surfing from the handset or using another device to tunnel (or tether).
Disabling multi-NAI will prevent the carrier from detecting your usage type and should prevent any charges to your account due to tethering.
Instructions for disabling multi-NAI are available on the forum and the WIKI.
Cheers,
Mick

What version of USBModem are you using? The Mogul isn't on the supported devices list and Mobile-Stream told me they think it might work, but aren't sure. Also, does it work with BT or just USB? I know there were BT issues when it was released for the Treo 755p.
***IMPORTANT*** - Before you modify registry settings, make a backup using SPB backup or Sprite Backup. I tried to tether before changing the registry, and my internet got locked out permanently. I had to hard reset my phone because I didn't have a backup. If this happens to you (it will say your vision username and pass are incorrect, no matter what you do) then you can restore your backup and try again. You shouldn't have this issue if you change the registry keys and connect first before attempting to use the internet sharing app.
Here's the registry keys you need to change to hide that you're tethering:
get a registry editor like total commander, and go into
HKLM --> Software --> OEM --> Wmodem
Set every key in there (I think there's 4 IIRC) to zero.
This will disable tethering detection, and then you can actually go into settings --> connections --> Manage Existing Connections (under Sprint),and then change your default connection method to "Phone as Modem" instead of Sprint PCS.
after changing the registry keys and connection settings, you will want to soft reset, and then when your phone boots back up, you need to connect to EVDO by opening internet explorer. Once you are connected, you can close internet explorer, open the internet sharing app, change the connection from sprint pcs to phone as modem and then click 'connect' to start your tethering. It will do the rest by itself.
As a note, using the PAM as the default connection setting will give you a boost in download speeds as well, from what I've seen and what others have reported. Happy tethering!

I've seen this edit to disable NAI. Do they do the same thing, or is there a difference?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem\Multi-NAI default is 1, set to 0(00000000)

Now that I look at it, there are three keys to modify... CheckProfile, Multi-NAI, and WModemDUN.
I am thinking that the CheckProfile key allows the phone to check your profile on sprint to see if you have the PAM service.
I think the WModemDUN is disabled by default anyway, and am not sure what it does. But I do know that I can connect all day now using Phone as Modem and tether with no issues and no additional programs to install
I checked my registry and you're right, there's CheckProfile, Multi-NAI, and WModemDUN. The first two are 1, the last is 0. So set the other two to 0 and tethering will be undetectable? I figured all programs like PDANet and USBModem did were change these values as well as provide drivers and/or a GUI, but I wanted to be sure.
I won't be tethering often, but I am going through a ton of data on the Mogul itself by streaming music all day long. I went through five gigs the first month I had it. I wouldn't want Sprint to see all that data, see some tethering, and then hit me with any charges or cancel my service.
Did you need to install any drivers for your Mogul or did Windows detect it right away? I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2 for what it's worth.
Guys I go into my registry & for the life of me I can't find the WModem menu.
I get into SOFTWARE-OEM & bam there is no Wmodem.
I am using Regedit. & am clueless.
THanks for the help.

you need PHM Registry editor found here: http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/
now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem
and set all the values to 0
ok, so if you disable all 3 then sprint wont see it as tethering then?
I am using regedit but the Wmodem is not visible on my device.
Found out what it was. I put the same regedit that i used on my smartphone & it is definitely different from the ppc version.
Thanks for the link.
x01ht may be different
The Softbank x01HT (HTC hermes branded for Japan) doesnt seem to have these reg. keys. All I've got is ChannelID.
I called softbank on this and, as expected, using it as a modem is "unsupported" but if I want to use it they'll be happy to charge me, despite my "unlimited packets" plan
Haven't trolled the forums for x01ht-specific solutions yet, but will have a poke around and see what I come up with.

WM6 Typhoon bugs and issues

It would be may be good to create a list of known bugs and other problems with the WM6 ROM for Typhoon. Please post here if you know about some bugs or strange behaviour.
I have been using this rom since yesterday and after few restarts, the phone remains stuck for about 3 minutes in the "mobile operator" screen during start up. Eventualy it asks for pin code, but after typing in, the time, operator and appointments information is missing in the home screen. I have flashed WM6 once again, but this phenomenon occurred again after application unlock and installation of basic software (xbar 2.5, pocket controller, Binaries smart explorer, auto keylock, smart time sync) + few restarts. Now I am searching for the reason if this is caused by some registry entry or by an incompatible software installed...At present I removed all the software but problem still present. Ready to make registry clean or hard reset...
lot of software incompability, mostly games,
-bug tcmp looks like the same most games have; there is sound but the screen will freeze in a few seconds (sound continues )
..tried to add T9 language according to instructions described at Ronswens pages for WM5. During writing sms I can choose the new language, but after choosing it only beep occurs when pressing a key. I suppose there should be changed also some another key in registry...do we have some experiences already with the T9 languages on this WM6 rom?

I have found the decision:
1)
We open "exe" a file with game in any HEX-editor, we find gx.dll and it is replaced on g0.dll
We clean the signature from a file by means of SignRemv and it is done new by means of Signed tool
To place the changed file back, and a file g0.dll to place in folder Windows
or 2) To replace a file gx.dll in folder Windows, in any a file-manager to put "read only" and restart (there can be problems with other programs)
As example Bustem
PS: forgive for my bad English

Use regeditSTG2.exe to modify the following phone registry keys:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies0001001 = 1 (that will enable the rapi_config, 1 means full access to rapi config, 2 means user controlled access)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies0001005 = 40 (that disallows the check for security cirtificate etc)
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies0001017 = 144
Run SDA_ApplicationUnlock.exe from the PC with the phone connected via ActiveSync. This will unlock the phone.
Disconnect and switch the phone off then back on again.
Hi,
I can't use voice talk (via handset bluetooth) before in wm2k3 and wm5 i have the fonction to add voice command with contact, but now no.
It is normal ?
Thx.
...I also revealed interresting behaviour when you are trying to connect to internet via GPRS. There sometimes occurrs error message that it couldnt be established GPRS connection because of missing GPRS coverage. (the "G" is also missing in homescren icon bar). But I am sure there is no GPRS coverage problem in my location.
So in this case you have to go into the phone settings and choose your network again. Afterwards when you are re-registerd in your network, the symbol G is present in iconbar and you can run the GPRS connection. Sometimes prolongomenous procedure...
I had pretty much the same thing as a few of the others.
Xphone11
WM5 - WM6
It flashed all ok, the phone booted all good and worked fine - but then after around 15 min of running, reciving one call and 3 failed attempts at sycning it died.
Well - actually, I re-booted it for something and it never came right after that.
These are the issues which appeared;
Contacts wouldn't open (yet the proccess was fired),
Calendar threw a 'missing file' error,
Start menu wouldn't work (no response from the button),
GPRS service was dropped ("no service available" - even though there was and the phone could see it if you seeked for it),
Yet the phone recived text messages while in this state and while calling the phone it just wouldn't do anything - yet to the caller it would appear to just ring and ring (not a provided service).
An interesting thing - I found that by making a change to the home screen or theme would allow the start menu too function as it should and the the clock to be displayed on the home screen.
Could be an area worth investigating....
I've had a taste now.... I want WM6!!!
What can I do to help?
...it also would be interresting to know whether there is a possibility to run the USB modem - I couldnt find it in start menu/accesories nor in the windows folder...
How to install for QTEK 8020 (T-Mobile SDA) joystick? please help... fuctional joystick in WM06 (my english low sorry)... right is up, left is down and left not functional and right... ???

I am also wondering why nobody who is capable enough tries to make a "joystick-version" of the Typhoon WM6 - that work would be highly appreciated by so many people...

WM6 looks fantastic, however...
I also have a few disappointments the most important of which are:
- No "Headset" option in the profiles menu!!!
- No STK menu!!!
- Very easily crashing on games and some progs (hope to fix it as stated above)
and the camera is definately worse than in 2003SE
..various language t9 cab files - I tried it and it works fine on WM6

do anyone try the standard calculator in wm6 ? It show error in my c500 so I have to use other calculator program
..it looks that my calculator works properly...

The reason I ask this is I use TCPMP to listen to audio books and I have unlimited data. I like to listen to them often and I either have to use wifi or open IE then press play on TCPMP. If I leave the registry to Always On I encounter a few annoyances when trying to call out. Basically I get the waiting on phone message. So leaving the registry modification as Always On is not completely friendly.
Thanks for any advice in advance and I hope someone out there that knows any applications or can make this will help me out.
you can search for
BG-Soft tweak to enable gprs
and what i use is an app from madoca
"nodata" to disable automatic gprs....
BUT i search something to "go online" because picsel browser does not connect automaticly...
Well those might work but not quite what I had in mind. I currently use my normal bluetooth headset to listen to these audio books and it is not a stereo set and I found a nice little executable that toggles the direction of all audio to either the phone as normal or all audio to the bluetooth headset. I was hoping that their was something that can do the same with the gprs using the registry edits. With that bluetooth exe I simply made a shortcut and run it anytime I want to keep my audio discreet.
Just a follow up.
I tried both versions of GB-SOFT GPRS & Audio tweak and neither seem to work for me. Would it be because I use edge? I know that is probably not why but I can't get it to do what it says it does. So back to hoping to find a toggle program again.
But hte regedits are for allways on or off. not for connect and disconnect....
Yea that is correct Always on or off.
This seems like GB-Soft application seems like a possible solution but it doesn't control my connection at all sorta weird.
I guess the answer is SPB GPRS Monitor it seems to do it.

Skype 3, minimize instead of close reg edit?

I finally tossed skype 3 on my verizon TP2 which works great. I plan on using it to chat with friends and work people while I am in Europe over the data connection (new sim).
I would like it to stay open in my today screen.
So what needs to be edited/made/changed so "X" does not kill it, but instead minimize it. I would like every other program to still close with a press of the "X".
I figure it is as simple as a registry edit, similar to the opera one in: HKCU\Software\HTC\TaskManager\TerminateProcess
I tired adding a DWORD of Skype-PPC.exe with a value of 0, but this did nothing.
Thanks in advance,

What you're asking isn't possible, to my knowledge. You can set all apps to minimize on a tap, and close on a tap and hold (or vice versa), but you cannot set apps to close or minimize individually.
If it is not possible, how did opera do it on a stock 6.5 rom??

Opera is a problem in the way it accomplishes that. It is always loaded into the RAM until you go and close the process. This is counter intuitive to the way any other program loads itself into memory, and was done this way by the carriers. It doesn't do it in any custom ROM, you'll find. This was done to always make sure that the application would have priority in any situation. This is another reason why programs get kicked out of RAM when you get low on it, because Opera is always loaded in there.
