I have found a 3000 mAh battery on eBay for around $100 with shipping, and since I'm pretty tired of the short battery life I'm considering it. I was so embarassed when the family went skiing yesterday! My kids have smartphones (Qtek 8030 & 9100 - I keep the family on intelligent phones, my wife has a Qtek 8500 Star Trek) and they had MP3's playing all day in the slopes with only one of the three battery level stripes dissappearing, while I had to put my Atom in the car and charge it after only three hours, when it was down to less than 15 %! Which is why I'm considering either an expensive 3000 mAh or one of those cheap USB chargers where you just put in a regular AA (or was it AAA?) battery and hook it up to the mini USB port. So has anybody tried either of them?
The battery-based chargers work, there are AA and AAA models 'round here (>1 battery each) - but I haven't tried it on the Atom yet. Be aware that the Atom has a charger protection mechanism that refuses to let the battery trickle charge if it doesn't provide a rated amount of juice (this is not mentioned in the O2 site, but it's there. It's the reason why chargers that normally work on the Mini won't work on the Atom).
Personally, I'd rather get a charger that works practically everywhere than to grab an extended battery.
(Have you considered those new fangled solar powered chargers? Some of them contain internal batteries that store energy, even under artificial light - and it is this battery that is used to charge your device. This could be a better idea, but be sure to check if it works on your device.)
PS: a PDA eats battery like no tomorrow because it usually uses better processors and interfaces - the XScale on ours is the eater here. Smartphones run on a lower rated processor/card slots, and don't have touch sense screens, and thus can last for much longer. If you really need your PDA to last, well, forever - you might want to consider an extended battery or one of the CPU scaler programs.
Thanks! I forgot to say that I ate the battery with the CPU at 208 mHz (with XCpuScalar)... Anyway, I have two of those AA-chargers on the way, I'm glad they work! At home I have GP PowerBank chargers and a bunch of rechargable batteries which I will use for this. With any luck a few of those will last me all day on skis!
And I didn't know about that protection mechanism in the Atom, I have been wondering why it's so extremely picky when it comes to charging from USB cables and stuff like that.
And I hadn'd even heard about the solar charging option, but I see there are a bunch of those on eBay. They look pretty cool, but unfortunately when I'm in the sun I seldom stand still long enough to put the charger and the phone anywhere for charging. If there was an affordable vest or jacket for that, though...

The solar charger, btw, works under incandescent light as well (I have one - useful in a hotel room where you don't have a plug but you have access to a desktop lamp). More expensive models can supposedly work under flourescent light, but I'm a cheapskate. They work by having an internal LiON themselves, which is trickle charged by solar/incandescent power - and then the battery itself is the one that charges your PDA's battery. Many different types exist, but most of them have a 1000-3000mah internal reservoir, and the better ones have different voltage settings for differenet devices.
Yeah, but the problem is that they're too big for my jacket pockets, so they won't help me skiing.
Well, that didn't really work. So I have decided to go for quantity instead of quality: Ordering three batteries, one with a charger that charges it ouside of the phone as well as charges the phone. All in all around 40 dollars, which gives me four batteries to play with. I ain't gonna use up my phone next time I'm in the slopes! And I think the same batteries can be used on my next phone, the Atom Life. It's got a larger capacity battery, but it looks like it's the same physical shape. Then again I may be wrong, but at least I will have no problems on those boat trips this summer!
And that worked! Not to mention that the original battery has to be total an utter crap! On these new batteries I had more than twice the battery time I had on the original. Of course it's been used for about two years, but still it shouldn't be that bad! I have five year old PPCs that hasn't changed that much in battery time. Anyway, with three new batteries and the old one I can keep going for a looong time!

bro did u tryed u,r AAA batery charger for Aom Life? i also bought a AAA battery charger fro my first Atom but not working after that tryed for my Atom Exec saem now going to check on my Atom Life,, thought to ask u befor check it.......
Some types works, some don't. It seems like only the black type work,while the shiny metallic one doesn't.
Hello everyone. First of all, let me congratulate all of you who have made this incredible site. I've been reading your threads for 3 weeks and finally i wanted to make my first post. I didnt wanted to be a stupid post so thats why it took me 3 weeks to make it.
I got my first Hermes 5 days ago (yes i searched for info about hermes 2 weeks before i got it) and it is everything i always wanted/needed.
I live in a city called Temuco in Chile (A southamerican country ) and this toys are very expensive even if its a 2 or 3 years old toy like hermes).
When i received my Hermes i was ready to flash roms and got everything to do it, thanks to you guys),
I'm very pleased with some of your roms and now im using [OPTIMIZED Manilla2d][20755 09/29](AlmostNak3d)(V8) by joshkoss.
The only subject that worried me was.................... Battery life, so i did some searching and thats my first post about. Hope you guys find it usefull. I know there are some battery related posts around but wanted to make some conclusions about the subject.
Here we go.
I've been searching and reading different articles about optimizing a li-ion and li-ion polymer battery, as they basically behave the same way.
In recent days i've been thinking a way to keep my battery life longer.
What i first thought, and without any knowledge, is what i've heard all my life: "A fast charged" battery lasts shorter than a "slow charge" battery.
In some battery chargers there are two ways to charge batteries. Slow and fast. And i always feel that slow charge was better than fast, so i thought.
My Hermes charger is 5V 1A.
If i charge my hermes through USB (Which i think has less than 1A) my battery should be "better charged" and the charge should last longer.
I never quite tested this but as a normal "battery user" it sounded more logical to me.
So i searched on google if there was any information about li-ion batteries and its characteristics.
I went to www.batteryuniversity.com and what i read astonished me.
Battery Conclusions
1.- Lithium batteries are completely different than older nickel based batteries.
2.- Lithium is a very unstable element and behaves abnormally when overcharging and overdischarging.
3.- According to batteryuniversity, "Overcharging makes the cell causes plating of metallic lithium on the anode; the cathode material becomes an oxidizing agent, loses stability and releases oxygen. Overcharging causes the cell to heat up. If left unattended, the cell could vent with flame."
4.- Over-discharging is as dangerous as overcharging. According to batteryuniversity, if discharged, "Copper shunts may have formed inside the cells, leading a partial or total electrical short. The cell becomes unstable. Charging such a battery would cause excessive heat and safety could not be assured."
5.- Lithium batteries are usually overcharge and over-discharge protected.
6.- You shouldnt use chargers different than the manufacturer's one.
7.- End of story and End ob battery thoughts.
I (we) just have to live with that.
The Li-on cells for my Makita tools are charged on a computer controlled charger. It reads temp and level of charge and charges accordingly. Manufacturers estimate 3000 charges before the battery is dead, and this after fast heavy discharge that can make a battery too hot to hold and fast charge that takes 22 minute on a 3ah batttery from fully flat to fully charged.
The people who use Li-on at the edge of their accepted use, the radio control flyers, use computer controlled chargers that read the same parameters and more. Many of their chargers read individual cells and balance the charge. Again, after use, the batteries can be too hot to hold.
In a phone or a laptop we use a wall wart the same as any old nicad. I dont know if any clever stuff goes on inside the laptop or phone to regulate charge level according to battery condition but I don't think so. We get about a year out of a laptop that is trickle charged. I'm on almost 2 years for my Tytn with no discernable drop in life but I think I've been lucky, it seems to be about a year for many people. So that's 365 charges, approx.
My guess is that it's charger technology rather than battery technology that limits our battery life.
The Hermes does have a battery sensor. It can be screwed up though when you go below a certain level (<10%), hence people who have trouble recharging a TOTALLY flat battery. The Hermes sensor doesn't detect a battery giving a red LED.
I don't know anything about battery...
I'm currently have a problem with a battery or power-related. My X01HT have just 1 day life in use. I was try it with different second-hand battery, but it likes first condition when only life in 1 day. Hmm.. may be which is the wrong? The battery or the phone?
I have 2 set of X01HT, next time I will try to exchange the battery from both of it. I want to test their battery life to compare and make conclusion about which is the wrong between the battery or the phone.
My tested phone have radio version 1.14.01.10 and have unlocked with NextGenServer. I am using the newest Pays ROM Full. IPL: 1.04. SSPL: 2.60 (Olipro). I have experienced using Pays ROM in twice, first which already sold and the second is this case. Both of the have the same radio version. I think the first one is okay about the life stability, but this one have a problem. May be ROM have influenced the battery life? Or may be IPL/SSPL have caused instability too?

Hermes are battery hogs but some programs can be power leeches too.
If the radio rom isn't good for your area it also can be a power drain as it is constantly scanning for connection.
I tend to find about 2 days is all my battery lasts for with a little bit of use. Depends what you are using....

I have 3 pieces of SoftBank X01HT.
One of them just fine in the life of the battery, so network here is fine too (maybe). But this one is already sold, so I can't test the battery to my another X01HT which have a critical power problem.
Another X01HT so sleepy, the life of the battery just 1 day. I was try to replace the battery with another battery (2ndhand and I don't know the condition actually) but it have no change, just 1 day too, may be less... Now I try the third battery. I'll reported soon about this...
So how about your opinion about critical power in the X01HT? May be there is another factor beside the battery? Beside the program/OS? May be some physically probelm with their board or etc?

I can't say much about the X01HT... All Hermes internals should be the same, but they may put extra things in or take things out depending where you buy your Hermes.
So saying, the Hermes, if not all HTC phones, seem to use a large amount of power. If you use apps it will of course discharge faster.
Sometimes it can be as simple as changing the radio rom but this is risky as the radio rom tends to be permanent brick if something goes wrong with the flash.
Maybe an app you have running and don't realise, I had a BT program that did this, had to shut it down or my battery was down to 70%in about an hour or 2.

I am seeing 1530 mah batteries on sale in eBay now. They are supposed to be the same size as the original 1350 mah battery. My problem is that the image used to display the battery is the same as the image used to display the original 1350 mah battery. (Part number: 35H00120-01M)
So, is this a "rip off" or are the sellers just lazy and use an "old" image?
Does anyone have any experience with these new high capacity batteries that they can share with this forum?

Hmm... well you also see sellers on Ebay flogging adaptors specifically to convert the audio output of the Touch HD to a 3.5mm socket... Puzzled.
My experience with cheap far east batteries for various products is very mixed. I've had some really good ones at silly low prices, yet some others that were no good at all.
Sometimes they omit protection devices from the batteries to save cost, which can make them more prone to blowing up especially if inadvertently overcharged or short-circuited. Omitting this protection can also help make room for larger capacity cells.
Usual phrase applies: "buyer beware".
Personally I would avoid.
I have used a lot of 3rd party batteries before and I would say 95% of them are rubbish especially the ones where they claim higher capacity for the same physical size. I have used larger batteries that comes with its own custom battery cover. Only these types of batteries have lasted longer than the original.
At the end of the day HTC, Nokia, SE, Samsung etc. would want to pack the highest possible capacity for a given space while maintaining safety standards. They know what they're doing... They want to "squeeze" as much as possible to make our devices smaller. Cheap 3rd party manufacturers are not going to have the same clout.

Could the difference in capacity be due to an upgrade in technology? That is moving from a straight Li ion battery to a Li ion polymer battery?
Further to this discussion, are there any other batteries from another make / model phone / PDA that is 100% compatible with the HTC Touch HD AND has a higher capacity than the original 1350 mah?

I would say it has to be a few months more before any decent extended battery appears in the market.
Stupid question: Has the Diamond (or the Touch Pro) the same batteries, or at least the same size? I think there will be more battieres for the Diamond right now, as it has been published a few weeks earlier.

Diamond and Touch Pro share the same battery. i have a second HTC OEM Blackstone battery for backup. the ebay posting could also be a typo; 1350 vs. 1530? if i'm going for extra capacity, it will be with a battery that provides at least 25%+ more capacity.

New technologies tend to be more expensive when they are brought to the market to cover development costs, and it's very rarely, that cheap asian products represent newest technologies, which is not used by the big manufacturing companies ...

Well i think it's an typo. 1530 - 1350. Why not 1600 or something else. 1530mAh is a verry strang capacity for a battery.
HTC MAX 4G T8290 battery
I thought perhaps the 1500mAh battery that comes with the MAX 4G might fit into our Touch HDs. But the MAX is slightly thicker than the HD which may explain a bigger battery..

Thank you 02crazy, that Worcell site looks promising.
I agree. A little patients will be beneficial. I envisage a 1800 mah or 2200 mah extended battery option soon. It will come with a matching back, to allow for the extra thickness of the battery. This would not put me off, as I have used a PDA with a "piggy back" second battery for years. (It would not win a beauty contest, but it lasted for days.)

How sure are you about that? Diamond's battery is 900mah and Pro's is 1350nah!

I bought similar extended battery, but failed to gain any significant increase in battery life. I am using Xbmod/Yuki BTTF ROM. Even if I charge with external charger, the phone doesn't seem to recognise the extra capacity.

you can use the bigger battey and use an external charger, that will give you a full charge, to use it you just pop the battery out and restart the device when it reports low, that usually works at least it does for mine anyway
course if you got an cradle with external charger then you can buy a couple of batteries an keep some spare

I have the genuine HTC HD2 EXTENDED BATTERY, BA E400 2300MAH myself, and use it in substitution with regular battery...
Yes it'll work but your battery status readings will be incorrect i.e. the charge status bar in top right corner. However, the battery will last about twice as long as the stock one, but your batt status would be on low for that matter or as the guy in post somewhere above suggests, you can restart the phone when the indicator is low and get back accurate batt. level reading.
With that being said, EVEN THE GENUINE BATTERY WON'T CHARGE WHEN IT'S IN USE/IN THE PHONE. You're going to need external charger or charge it in Android (dual boot).

Let's share our experience about batteries, this is more about hardware than software side. Where is better to buy quality replacement batteries and etc...
I'm using two normal capacity 1350 mAh replacement batteries on my HD2 Nexus android. Both of them I bought on ebay quite long time ago and... what can I say, they performing ok, maybe slightly worse that was original one (lost). Recently I bought extended battery on ebay, twice thick and twice heavier than original one with back cover, 2400 mAh. Strange thing, it lasts about the same (sometimes I think even less) as original capacity ones. Peope say do calibration... This is what I'm going to do tonight, but strange, these normal capacity ones have not done any calibrations and last well. The question, why double capacity one does'n last any longer???
I will update you about changes after calibration.
Because of the calibration it just charges it till the normal capacity battery would be full, and but since this is a extended capacity battery it will need to be calibrated so that it knows that it can be charged further.
But, that's my theory. just try it out and see for yourself.

Extended batteries will drain down to 15% then should stay there for a while. And even if the phone shuts down due to drainage all you have to do is remove the battery, put it back in and you're back to around 40%.
I use 2 extended ones from ebay and they last at least 1.5-1.75 longer than the skinny original htc one.
Try to wipe battery statistics in advanced option in CWR Recovery
