Well I was looking to buy one of these babies but now work gave me 5 to look after!
I ran the fit4cat hemes tweaker to activate the hspda thingi it said enabled. Do u need run this everytime you reboot the phone soft reset that is.
Is the 1.8mb connection available to certain areas only in the uk or will you get it anywhere in the country that 3g is available am in newcastle.
I read you need to call customer service to activate it so I rand and the guy didnt know what he was doing, he spoke to tech support and said she enabled some dooo dada and it should work i tested the speed it was at .5mbs so not quiete 1.8 or 1mp people have reported.
What your stories guys in the uk on t-mobile?
Ta Russ
Yes, you need to call TMobile CS. But it is a bit of a lottery.
I gave them a call this evening and talked to a nice (Scottish) lady: first time she had heard of HSDPA, so she checked with the tech department - put me on hold - back again - on hold again - after which she transferred me to the technical department. There, a really nice guy said he would switch HSDPA onto my account right now and that it would not cost me anything (I am on the basic w'n'w).
So here's the thing: if they don't talk to the technical department while putting you on hold, then no hope - they will say you need to upgrade to WebnWalk Pro to have it (which is wrong).
If they put you on hold and talk to the tech dept, or even better they transfer you to the tech department then you're a winner and HSDPA will be active on your account a few minutes later.
Yes, amazingly predictable
I've found that generally the Tech Department has no problem with talking to users, but its a pain in the arse trying to get through to them as CS never want to put you through.
I usually chuck enough technical jargon at em to Fry there poor little brains that they give in and just pass me through
cool
Well the guy nice enough put me on hold spoke to tech support and said they turned something on.
I tried speed test on www.dslreports.com under tools then mobile in ie on the mobile and get 571 kbits/s 14.8 dl time seconds.
I assume this is 3g speed ie 0.5mbs a second. Can any of u guys that are on uk tmobile do me speed test on this and post results.
Also did u have to use the tool i mentioned before to tweak ur phone?
I just rang customer services, asked for HSDPA to be activated.
The agent asked me if that was the high speed internet service, once I said yes he told me it was sorted.
24 hours Later my internet jumped to 1mb Speeds
Just done the test result 702kbit/sec
And i am in Wallsend Newcastle with 2 bar signal webnwalk pro with HSDPA enabled by tmob, no tweaks done to the phone
am in wallsend too hmm 708kbs that um 0.7mbs out of max 1.8mbs maybe yours hasnt been turned on as per http://msmobiles.com/news.php/5536.html
they got 1024 mbs.
Tested mine again and got 534 kbs my understanding thats 0.5mbs second maybe thats as fast as we get up here ?
Whats the max speed of 3g? is 534kbs more then 3g limit
Guess i leave it till tomorrow see if it taking a while for the upgrade to go through
PS Cheers love the phone.
That is when I got all my contacts and gps+ menus back resco etc
I thought 3g was 384 kb/s and i wouldnt hold too much sway with these tests, i test mine using www.bandwidthplace.com and i get average 1.2mb/s. Using it for surfing its fantastic the speed, the phone is awesome too i have no complaints
Chris
hmm maybe i am on it then. max ivgot it to say is 700 6700. shame no way to easly tell

after reading news regarding HSDPA on msmobiles.com, i've decided to give a try. i've called 150 and spoke with guy who: 1) had terrible language, i hardly could understand what he was talking to me; 2) had no idea about HSDPA, however he put me on hold to speak with tech team, after which he told me that HSDPA has been activated.
later on that day, i was at Stansted Airport waiting for my father-in-law to arrive. while waiting i did some tests with dslreports.com, but i couldn't achieve more than 200-300 kbit/s. then i decided to use fit4cat Hermes Tweaker to activate HSDPA, reboot and... got over 800-900 kbit/s speed straight away! nice one! but seems like this HSDPA activation through Hermes Tweaker doesn't work stable, as some days later i couldn't achieve more than 300 kbit/s again...
Well got my Vario II on Tuesday and i'm loving it. Called T-Mobile C/S tonight
to get HSDPA turned on, am on standard W+W package. Took awhile to explane to poor girl what HSDPA was and she said "don't know what u are on about will talk to our tech dept and call you back". Got to be honest thought i was going to never heard back from her but 30 mins later had a call saying it's now been switched on. So turned Vario off & on and wow went from 250kbs to 980kbs.
So give C/S a call, was no talk about not being able to offer HSDPA on standard W+W package. Just got to try and get them to understand what u want.
Anyway off to play more, got to say first windows phone i have ever used and i'm loving it.

Same here, had to push the issue and said they'd call back, had massive doubts but had the same call back. So far T-mobile CS have been fantastic, glad I left o2 now!! I do think you need to know what you're talking about though before you call.
Didnt work for me!
Guys,
Thought id just say that I called up yesterday and spoke to someone im also on standard web and walk.. I explained to her that a few of my colleagues had got HSDPA and she needed to talk to technical support and get it turned on.
I waited on the phone for a while and then she came on, she said that she had spoken to one of her colleagues and he had said I needed to be up-graded to the premium web and walk, apparently i would loose my free minutes and would need a new SIM card... so I gave up! I think that this will spread round there call centres... I may give it another try later today just out of interest... I think it bad that some people are getting it for free and otheres not....
Ill up-date if I do get it switched on.. it would be nice but its not the end of the world!....
I tell a lie!
I dont know why... but please see my above post... I just decided playing with the device to do a speed test... now the other day i got 384KBPS on it ... ive just done 3 tests and 2 were 1.1mbps the other about 851 kps so it seems like they have switched it on after all! unbelivable.. Top bannana

I had a kind of similar experience with T-Mobile. The first time I phoned I think it was the scotish call center and they put me through to the techies, they said no... unless I upgrade to w&w pro. Just tried again today (newcastle) and they put me through to the techies and said I couldn't get 3g in my area. After I convinced them I could they put it on for me. I'll do some speed tests now.
1.1 Megabits per second from bandwidthplace.com!! Don't think I will cancel the ADSL just yet.
DATA SPEEDS ON T_MOBILE
Having purchased an MDA VARIO II and read through these forums I decided to contact T-mobile Technical Support and make sure my HSDPA was in fact working.
He informed me that no, it wasn't, however had I bought the VARIO II under a new contract then it will have been automatically activated (believe that if you will).
It is now activated and my speeds have marginally increased.
As for HSDPA speeds, he compared it with torrents - the more transmitters/antennas in range (seeders) the faster the connection, since your phone downloads packets of data simultaneously from different transmitters.
I'm not sure whether this is total claptrap since I'm no techie, but it explains T-mobiles projected upgrade to up to 20mbps mobile data speeds over the next few years.
Anyone got any more info?
Eureka!!
At last after reading all of your posts I thought I'd pop on over to bandwidthplace.com and see if my poor speeds had changed. And sure enough...851 kbps with just 1 Bar of UMTS signal! Great stuff. I thought only download speeds would be affected, but NO, surfing speeds have greatly improved too.
Just to get my two cents in here, I've tested my speed with bandwith.com and I'm generally hitting about 1.2mbps, but this does fluctuate, and sometimes its a little slow; however I think it is worth remembering that until April this year nothing like wnw existed.
Last year I had an XDA Executive on O2, as they offered it me a lot cheaper than t-mobile. The main appeal of the exec to me is its browsing potential - but I was going over my monthly allowance on a daily basis! Luckily I discovered this within my initial 28 days, and I cancelled.
I didn't have another PDA for six months.
As it stands I cannot understand why ANYONE who likes browsing on their PDA would stick with dinosaurs like orange and O2 (short of bad t-mobile coverage in your area) - 75 quid for a one gig allowance is obscene! so long as t-mobile are willing to offer me twice that allowance for ten percent of the price I'm happy to not quite hit 1.8mbps.
Nice if you can get it though!
Just called T-bag and asked for HSDPA and was told the only way was to upgrade to the web and walk pro - £10 per month.
Went for the standard web and walk package instead to see if the speeds increased anyway...
Before the call on 3 bars signal 480kbps, after at full bars 650kbps.
I very much doubt the difference is anything but a signal difference
Il call again tomorrow and hope to speak to someone thats a bit special, see if theyl switch it on for free
you DON'T have to be on web n walk pro.
Honestly!
The reason its called pro is because it allows so called "professionals" access to the internet anywhere - this includes Starbucks Hotspots, and is aimed at those who take their laptops everywhere with them. If you wish to connect to the internet on your computer (either by datacard or phone modem) you are obligated to add a pro bolt-on, rather than the standard one. However not doing so won't necessarily mean you will be given a hefty fine, since it is kinda hard for them to prove!
Speed is not an issue, aside from the fact that a laptop loads up web pages faster than a pda. I have HSDPA, and I'm on the standard web n walk package.

I, obviously, have a Herald and I was wondering that if I get a Mogul and go with Sprint because they have EVDO and apparently their plan would have everything mine has but would be almost 30% cheaper, would that be a good deal?
I was also thinking about the Kaiser and I've read that you can unlock it to work for any kind of service provider but I was wondering if it supports EVDO and I'm just wondering if it was worth switching because of all the buying/selling of things things.
The Herald does has a slow processor and not only is the service plan good but I wondering if either of those phones are "better" than this one?
EDVO and GMS are imcompatible. You won't be able to use a tilt in Sprint's network, only in other GSM networks. (AT&T and Tmobile, for example.)
Where do you live? T-Mobile's 3G roll-out is picking up momentum, they've been cracking out 2-3 cities per week lately. It may not be too far off for you. Of course you will need a new phone, but the Android device is supposed to be announced next week...
I live in El Paso, Texas. Is there a place where I can check on the status of T-Mobile's 3g area progress?
The main thing I want is faster internet for my phone (or possibley a different one) and a faster processor. I was going to sell my Wing since it's only a month old (got a new one ) and get a Mogul on ebay and get Sprint's 70 dollar plan that has all the same features my T-mobile plan has but Sprint's is cheaper and faster internet, plus the phone is better no?
Also. Do you know the specs for this phone? Wow how much better is the Android cause I read a lot of nice things about it
Looks like El Paso isn't getting 3G by the end of 2008, but several other places in Texas already have it or will by the end of the year.
http://tmonews.com/2008/09/t-mobile-officially-announces-3g-cities/
I don't know the specs for the Android phone, but there are some vids on Youtube and it's looking pretty sweet. Supposedly T-Mobile is going to have something official to say on it on Sept. 23.
Ah yeah I've seen videos and read about how people gossip that it's only going to cost 200 dollars. I hope it has a slide-out keyboard.
Hmm damn maybe I should just wait it out then??
Oh I was also wondering if the 5.99 T-Zones proxy hack still works to get full internet? Cause 20 dollars is very outrageous and that's one of the concrete reasons as to why I want a different plan with faster, and cheaper, internet.
Re: T-Zones proxy hack. Some users are reporting that it is still working in certain areas, but T-Mobile is actively closing this loophole. It hasn't worked here in close to a year. Even if it works for you now, I wouldn't bet it will last.
Which data plan are you looking at on Sprint? Some of their 'everything' plans are decent, but IMO $20 for unlimited internet is one of the best deals in the industry.
Hmm that sucks. See I wouldn't have mind paying 20$ for unlimited internet if it went faster than 150kbs/s. This 25kb/s is blasphemy for 20 dollars.
I was looking at sprint's 70$ plan; unlimited texting and picture messaging plus 450 whenever minutes with nights starting at 7pm and their wonderful EV-DO internet. I was planning on buying an HTC Mogul.
I think that's a better deal no? But that Google Android phone is wnticing me to keep T-mobile...

haha me too!
but 3g sounds too expensive haha
Ahh lol well I'm sure the OS for the G1 will be ported... The main reason I wanted a new phone and better internet is because my parents are cheap and can't afford anything and I use internet sharing ALOT for my homework and it's so painfully slow . Plus it would be good to be able to download things that take a few hours rather than a few days.
Yeah but I'm thinking about selling this phone to get it. If the plans are under 100 dollars, I'm going to get it .
Well thanks guys for all the help and answering my questions. I guess I'll wait it out for the G1. I'm glad it's cheap.
buru, do you have EDGE coverage in your area? 25kbs is abysmal, even for straight GPRS! Before EDGE, I could pull close to 40kbs on GPRS, now that EDGE is here my speeds hover just under 200kbs. From what I've heard, some newer phones can surpass 200kbs on EDGE to, if they have up to date hardware with support for the latest EDGE specification. Granted, the Herald is no spring chicken, but you should be able to manage ~175kbs. It doesn't sound like much, but most sites I need to access on my phone offer a mobile site and EDGE speeds are quite tolerable for loading these pages.
Holy **** what?? About 175 kb/s?? Aww **** El Paso, Texas gets nothing good!!
Well I'm not sure but I believe it's GPRS. Plugged in using internet sharing or just downloading on Opera 4.1 my average is always about 25kb/s.
Man that blows that mines rediculously low. Where do you live and should I call T-Mobile and ask what their average speeds should be for my Wing? Cause I do have the total internet.
Damn even at 40kb/s I would be content but 200!! Geez... sadness. Now I'm even more disappointed.
buru- Go to this page and enter your zip code. Be sure to check "Display data coverage" at the bottom. When I searched El Paso, it showed the whole area fully covered by EDGE.
http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/pcc.aspx
Are you running the stock ROM on the Wing? It is notorious for being crap. Also, check your data connection settings... perhaps your Wing is only set to GPRS. I'm not sure what the options are, but when I had my Treo 750 you could choose between GPRS and GRPS/3G... maybe the Wing has an option for EDGE...?
**** yeah I'll check it right now.
Lol the stock ROM is mad slow, screw that . I'm using ttran's wonderful Open Touch 6.5 no throttle and no spb.
I don't believe there's an option for EDGE cause when I connect to the internet it always displays "Connecting to GPRS..." regardless of anything.
Hmm... I'll mess with the internet options a bit and see what's up. If I find that everything points to my internet speeds being faster, should I call T-Mobile or go to their store over here and ask what's up?
Thanks also btw. But does the Wing even support EDGE? Maybe that's why?
The Wing definitely supports EDGE. If it is not a problem with the internet connection settings, you should call Customer Care (1-800-937-8997) and ask for PDA support. Be sure to call from a different phone, as they will want to go through some steps with you on the Wing. Don't even bother going into a store because this is going to be beyond the capabilities of 99% of the reps, and they will just put you on the phone with support anyways.
Hmm I think I will because I looked in the data connections and the only options are Cellular line (GPRS), Cellular line, My ISP, and some other one.
Damn that sucks though. So for sure my phone's internet speed should be faster than 25kb/s?
Based on your options, GPRS is the right setting. Technically, EDGE is a form of GPRS (unlike 3G, which is a whole new protocol). You should be getting more than 25kb for sure.
For the record, using my wing here in Tennessee, it ALWAYS says connecting to GPRS, but it displays an E for Edge network, or a G for GPRS Data network next to the signal icon up top of the screen. In most of the area(in backwoods TN) I get pretty darn good Edge coverage, running around 150 to 175 kbps. Definitely check it out, might try a different ROM if all else fails, just to eliminate that as a problem.
Syn
Hmm well it's always an E next to the network icon but it's easily less than 40kb/s all the time.
**** it I'm calling T-Mobile and asking how fast my internet speeds should be over here where I live.
I'm sure it isn't the ROM I'm using... It's ttran's OT 6.5 and I'm sure almost everyone else is also using it and not getting crappy ass speeds?
Warning this may apply to YOU already. If you have bought your phone from a third party vendor and not direct (and even now direct) from T-Mobile then simply download a speedtest app and check your speeds. HSDPA down should be around 1800kbs minimum, HSUPA up should be 500kbs minimum
If you are about to buy from a 3rd party retailer take heed.
I bought a SGS on 24 month contract with T-Mobile (other network providers seem to follow the same system) from buymobilephones.net. While sitting with my daughter I realised just how slow my data connection was when trying to access the net. She is also on T-Mobile purchased direct. After using Speedtest I discoverred I had 1/10th her download speed and 1/100th her upload speed. This on what appeared to be the same contract.
After contacting T-Mobile they told me that it was nothing to do with them but it was because I had a free unlimited internet bolt on and as it was supplied by a 3rd party retailer my complaint could not be escalated to a higher tier and that they would not deal with it. Effectively they said it was the retailers problem not theirs. Also they said that OFCOM and CICAS have had several complaints along the same lines but did not do anything about them. In other words "contact OFCOM or CICAS if you want but they can do nothing"
So be warned. Buy from a 3rd party and your data will be crippled and you can do nothing about it except pay an additional fee for another Unlimited internet bolt on.
Phone up and say you have an Android phone and you only have 1GB capped internet and not 3GB like they say. If they say you didn't buy it directly from T-mobile you can't have 3GB like it says in the T&Cs, say the T&Cs say nothing about capped internet.
Note most in the phone center aren't aware you're meant to get it directly from T-mobile. What they should do is switch you to Web Walk Plus then let you choose another booster instead of internet.
If this doesn't work, try a T-mobile store, they don't know whether you bought it directly from them or not.
Thanks for the suggestions but I am sure they will soon catch on to this (if they have not already) and many others will be caught out. There must be hundreds if not thousands already out there many of whom will not have a clue that they are not getting the data speeds that they believe they are paying for.
Anyone who want to see the current position on this look here:
http://samsunggalaxysforums.com/showthread.php/2621-3rd-party-U.K.-T-Mobile-data-contracts-crippled.
Not a good read I'm afraid.
I have deleted this post to add an apology.
It turns out T-Mobile have added a speed cap on the new WnW 1GB soc. I went through ALL T 'n' C's and could only find that a 50Kb speed cap is issued to Mobile Broadband Plus Daily. So I made a few phone calls and was told that HSPDA is also capped to 1.8Mb on the WnW + soc. They also told me that the WnW soc has this cap as it is only ment for browsing and emails and is not classed as Mobile Broadband and the FUP does not permit any activity which these speeds are needed. See here
The 3Gb soc that T-Mobile gives for free is a deal closer to promote going to T-Mobile direct which as I knew was always the case. However they never once mentioned speeds of connection.
I also found out something that I never knew. The Android WnW + soc is not the same as the Mobile Broadband + soc (which used to be called wnw +) and does not permit tethering.
Anyway these are the facts and sorry for providing the wrong information.
n1kon
I still recommend phoning up acting dumb asking why you're only on 1GB and capped. Don't mention your didn't get it from them directly.
Also I read when I made a thread about this, T-mobile stores do not know where you got your phone from, so they will fix it.
Also in the T&Cs it says you can have 3GB if you order over the phone, say nothing about directly through T-mobile on the phone.
I pay £18.75 a month and I now get 600 mins, properly unlimited texts and 3GB internet, instead of 500 texts and 1GB capped internet.

You clearly know more than me, and I do mean that, but...
Numerous people have experienced the slow download problem including me. The only way I can reconcile what you state above and the numerous problems with the 1gb allowance and speed is the device or how it's set-up on the system.
I knew about the 1gb/3gb 3rd party problem before I purchased, so I decided only to look at deals direct from T-mobile. When I got the phone, I couldn't tell which allowance I had as I had no web 'n' walk + on the "My-T-mobile" section of the website. So I downloaded a speedtest app as other people mentioned my speed would be capped.
The app always showed a speed of around 300kps, so I called T-mobile. They had my device as a Galaxy S, but only 1gb allowance. They changed it to 3gb, and the speed went to 1.8mps immediately and I still get around that speed now.
I've still got no web 'n' walk + on the "My-T-mobile" section but the twitter team tell me it won't show but I have it. I downloaded 2gb to check and I got no messages about any allowance. Something is happening somewhere, as my speed increased as soon as my allowance went from 1gb to 3gb.
Also, this is no reflection on you, but some staff at t-mobile are not great to put it politely. I had to speak to two people to get someone who knew that android phones get 3gb not 1gb. Then I discovered that in the internet header information sent to websites, my mobile phone number was included. After speaking to technical support at t-mobile they told me that this was OK, and there was nothing they could do about it anyway. One quick post about the problem on T-mobile forums, where other people also complained and it was quickly solved. It effectived all Galaxy users as the forum didn't have my account details, but it was solved straight away despite the technical team saying they couldn't.

Sorry forgot one more thing. There was a time just before I purchased my Galaxy that the terms on T-mobile, did not say anything about only getting 3gb if purchased directly. It just said if you had a T-mobile android phone you would get 3gb.
But they were still refusing people who purchased through a third party 3gb, despite it not being mentioned in the conditions. In your example that's like McDonalds advertising a KFC deal that didn't exist, and you could quite happily complain to McDonalds.
Eventually they changed the conditions to what they say now. I think it changed around July/August time

You really should look into these things before you jump and make a fool of yourself.
Emails from T-Mobile.
Good morning Roger
We do understand your position, we have had other buymobilephones.net as well as customer from other online resellers approach us in the same manor as they we’re not provisioned with the same data package that a customer purchasing direct from T-Mobile would be.
It appears you have uncapped 3G speeds, which is standard across the internet on your phone’ booster, the provision of HSDPA included with ‘internet on your phone plus’ booster however, will only come as standard on Android devices purchased directly from T-Mobile or at an additional monthly cost.
Best regards

Good morning Rev Pitman,
I can see from your email conversation with David that you have contacted us about your Samsung Galaxy S experiencing slow speeds. As we have provisioned your account with the maximum 3G speed, up to 356kbs, it would appear that your phone is functioning as normal and as per the terms and conditions of your contract. If you wish to purchase the Web’n’walk plus booster for an additional monthly charge this will enable HSDPA speeds. You can purchase this within My T-Mobile.
Kind Regards

Hi Roger,
I cannot escalate this on for unfortunately nor do I have the power to give you the HSDPA access you are looking for. This is due to the reason that although you have a phone using the T-Mobile service, you have accepted a contract through a third party provider and are subject to the deal that you have agreed to with them. You will not find the paragraph you have copied and pasted below on Buymobilephones.net as this will not exist with them.
There have been cases like this passed to OFCOM and CISAS by customers but they have never been upheld due to this. If it is on the T-Mobile website we will uphold it if you buy from there but as you are experiencing we do not provide these features when purchased through third parties.

The passage referred to;
“Pay monthly plans which include internet on your phone on an Android phone
You'll get internet on your phone Plus included if you join us on a pay monthly plan with an Android phone in a T-Mobile store, over the phone or via our website, t-mobile.co.uk. You'll need internet coverage, check it at t-mobile.co.uk/streetcheck. Remember that you can only use your internet on your phone Plus Booster in the UK and you can't use your phone as a modem or use Internet on your phone Plus for peer to peer file sharing, or making internet phone calls. *Internet on your phone Plus comes with a fair use policy of 3GB a month. We'll monitor how much you send and receive each calendar month so that we can protect our network for all our internet on your customers. If you use more than your fair use policy amount, we won't charge you any more, but we may restrict how you can use your plan, depending on how often you go over your amount and by how much. As your phone is always connected to the internet, if you remove your internet on your phone Plus Booster from your account you'll automatically be charged up to £1 every day. That £1 a day rate has its own fair use policy and other legal stuff, which you can see here: t-mobile.co.uk/services/uk/fairuse/#fup5. “

My Network contract is with T-Mobile, I get my bills from T-Mobile, I access my account through www.T-Mobile.com/uk but the phone was bought through a 3rd party. The only reference given by the supplier OR T-Mobile is to the download data limit amount. Nowhere does it mention capping speeds.
They will tell u anything. My account only has 1gb as im using my blackberry sim but my speeds are hsdpa. The forum team also told people they were testing froyo when samsung had not even released it. Even apple said that there signal issues were software related but gave away free cases to fix it and the guy that designed the iphone 4 no longer works for them. You will beleave what people tell you coz u know no different. Android are not the only devices to use hsdpa but are the only devices to have free 3GB data. Other devices with standard wnw still hit full hsdpa. Or so i thought.

They admitted on the phone to me that the internet booster is around 300kbps, which is what I got. They immediately switched me, then I got over 1mbps.
OP I suggest dialing the T-mobile number (150) on your phone, and talking to someone who is unaware it does not apply if you have a third party phone, or going to the store like I said.
Someone who works for T-mobile said they don't know if you got it directly from them.
edit: Also should I contact them about sending my phone number in the HTTP headers?

Not sure what that means?
The thing is people don't have to believe what I have said blind. They can download Speedtest for themselves. Get a full HSPDA signal (H showing with full bars) and run the test. Then they can contact T-Mobile themselves and get the same answer I did when they find their speed is capped to 350kbs. I suppose as you work for them (in PR maybe or sales?) you have a vested interest.

I will check on this on wednesday when im back in. The only thing i can think of right know to why some people are having issues is that there is a hidden soc that auto deploys when connected through domino. I have 2 sims 1 with 1GB (blackberry) and 1 with 3GB (sgs) and both speeds are the same when i put them in my sgs.

I'm not sure if it actually happens to me just saw it earlier in the thread. Maybe it's because your 1GB is Web n Walk and not Internet Booster?
n1kon said:
I will say this only once. Dont read that thread on that link it is all crap. WnW + is a booster to increase the permitted download limit to 3GB per month it has nothing to do with speed of connection hsdpa is enabled by device not booster the only difference between wnw and wnw+ is 2GB of downloads. Do not tell me im wrong as ive been working for t-mobile for near on 7 years. When you sign a contract its for the airtime not the device. Ofcause your going to get no help of something that was not supplied by us. Would you go into mcdonalds and moan about you kfc? No!

Actually, you're partly wrong there, n1kon. T=Mobile does cap the speed on anyone who has not bought their android phone direct from T-Mobile. They don't cap those who are on the 3Gb FUP. Those on the 1Gb FUP are capped at 3G speeds. It's no longer possible to buy an android phone from a reseller with the 3Gb FUP, as that is only available directly from T-Mobile. It used to be the case that if you phoned up and created a big fuss, they'd move you over to the 3Gb FUP and enable HSDPA on your line. It's not so easy to get them to do that now. However, I'd say people who didn't buy direct from T-Mobile still have room to argue it, as T-Mobile's own Terms and Conditions refer only to the FUP limit, and not to capped data transfer speeds.
I am telling you that you are wrong, even though you have worked for T-Mobile for however long. T-Mobile's technical support removed the cap on my account whilst I was on the phone to them. The guy in question then spent the next 20 minutes running speeds tests on his phone as I ran them on mine. The difference we're talking about is having HSDPA enabled on your account, or being limited to 3G. That is down to T-Mobile and not the handset.

That should have stopped now, mine has and it's also stopped for the people who reported it to T-mobile.
Go here to test it though, if it shows your phone number, ring them:

I agree with those sentiments and believe you do have HSDPA speeds on a 1GB FUP tarriff. However, my personal experience is that when I got my SGS I couldn't download at more than approx 350kpbs, despite the phone showing a HSDPA connection. After a few dismal experiences where I could download anything at all when in town shopping (due to the network being overloaded) I made a to CS to explain that although I accepted the 1GB fup, there was no mention in their t&c's anywhere that they might limit the download speeds and therefore they should remove any such limits asap. Less than a minute later I could download at 2Mbps and since then I have not had any problems using my phone when out about, even in places where it was unusable previously.
I'm on Tmobile from buymobilephones.net... will have to find out if my rate is limited. What speedtester do people recommend?
So im thinking about switching over to simple to see how it is. Anyone know if theyve figured out how to get 3g and voice on simple mobile.
no
not yet, i don't think it will ever happen i got the simple mobile with the tab too.but my model is the euro version unlock.
The simple mobile guy in my local mall said that all tmo devices should work with their sim. they also seem to use tmobile towers.
I haven't confirmed this, but would love to know if anyone with a tmo tab can try it.
it will work with simple mobile
but you will not get 3G & VOICE at the same time. it's one or the other lol.
But 3G data should work with a simple mobile sim?
yes it should, i dont see why not?
try it and let us know.
so everything works just as it did with tmobile. i pay 60 bucks for unlimited everything.
Will you use Roto's modem switcher to get your 3g or voice? We need your feedback.
Simple Mobile w/SGT
I have been with Simple Mobile for 1 full month now. The rep that I bought the card from, who also installed it and set it up, stated that I'd get 3g speed, for $50 a month. NOPE, not even using the Roto modemswitch!!!! $50 a month only gets 2g(edge) and at that, it's slower than slow can be. And the tech support at simple mobile, well they just don't understand anything I explain, or maybe I'm just expecting the edge network to be faster.
My experience is, they don't care about your problems, you signed up for $50 a month, and this is what you'll get: Unlimited Calls, Text, & Internet(Limited to 2g)
I signed up on 8/16 and I got phone calls, but never could send out any MMS or download anything from the market, or download any songs using the "edge" cause it was just too slow. The download rate was actually slower than a 56k modem dial up connection. I have a photo of the speedtest.net outcome. Ping was 455ms, download speed was 11kbps, upload was the same.
Now I may be expecting a bit faster internet, but I tried to download a song, 4MB. It took 30 minutes to download........anyone else think that's a little slow?????
My biggest issue is, they put the blame on the rep who signed me up, stating that it's his fault and they aren't able to give me a break on this next months service. I tried to give them the best example I could, "What if I bought a Phone from Best Buy and the service was with t-mobile(which I'll never do again)?" I don't think tmobile would say, sorry Mr. House, but you're going to have to go back to Best Buy and tell them they didn't program your phone correctly. But anyway, we'll take your money and you can pay more next month......
Oh Kay, well I did pay the extra $10 a month and my 3g speeds are between 2-3MB per minute download, so it's quite an improvement.
I use the Roto Modemswitcher for 3g network when I'm driving. I haven't yet figured out how to forward my phone calls to my OnStar phone, but hopefully I'll figure it out soon.
All in all, the call quality is great, I'd recommend Roto Modemswitcher for all, cause the 2g is slow slow slow, and mostly, you aren't going to get wifi everywhere you are, so when you wanna look something up, having the switcher to go back to 3g while out on the town, will come in very handy.
Well, NOW, i'm paying $60 a month.

Maybe they're throttling the speed, but have you changed roms recently or anything special. You can always call your provider to ask them about the speed.
From what i hear, their unlimited data is capped to 1gb?.... the is what kept me from switching lol.
From what i hear is it is indeed unlimitied data. I think the Simple Mobile $60 plan used to be for 1GB of data but recently got changed to unlimited data.
The current plan is indeed unlimited but if you are caught deviating from the terms of use (i.e tethering, downloading torrents and files from peer to peer) they will either restrict your data or disconnect it.
If you use the data for your phone it is truly unlimited.
You should check with their customer care, I work for T-Mobile and I remember reading something about how they can add a throttle feature and you have to call to have it removed. It won't drop off when the bill cycle switches.

I too am in the same boat, I did change ROM, and suddenly my data got very slow. I called simple mobile to check if I was getting throttled or anything, they told me I was not getting throttled.
It's puzzling me what might be the reason for this, is this because I changed a ROM?
i called them and complained about slow data speed, agent just "rebooted" my account and speed went back

Dude! Same thing here and I haven't done anything!
To me it started happening like last Friday or since Thursday.
My speed is like 0.18 down.
I restored a nandroid and still same thing, I switched to another rom, and still same thing >:S

My phone gets "Throttled down" around the 15th as I go over 5gig worth of data...and paying 39.99 for Unlimited Data...WTF?!
I am facing the same issue on Simplemobile. I do some (light weight) tethering to browse my emails etc.
Suddenly last week (Mar 15, 2011) my phone internet speed reduced drastically. Most webpages pages started timing out. Internet basically becomes unusable.
I am start of my billing cycle and have only used 200MB of data. I have never exceeded 1GB in a month.
The only reason I moved to simpleMobile was so that I could use the 'unlimited' data plan.
What to do now? I guess time to move on to other more welcoming providers ?
I was trying to see how much data i could use up before simple mobile decided to throttle down or interrupt my data services so I started watching a lot videos on youtube, movies and i even did some light tethering. So a couple days ago after I hit the 2GB mark my internet slowed down to a crawl.
I still have the H icon but the internet is very slow, I've called them 4 times; they have restarted my data services more than once but it's still slow so today they just created a ticket with their technical support team and the rep said they'd call me withing a couple of days. So let's just wait and see.
Using speedtest.net app, I'm seeing between 1.50mbps-2.70mbps SOMEtimes in the 3.00mbps range. Most I've gotten since I rooted was 3.96mbps and upload is usually always around 1.30mbps. Is this normal for 3G? I don't remember what my results were pre root, but I think I was getting at least 5mbps download. Also I updated to the latest froyo 7.15 blah blah radio, and I see no difference. Supposedly your supposed to get better service and faster 3G. That's not the case for me. Seems the same as always. I'm not using simple im using tmobile us epc.tmobile.com since it was checked on default
Same here. As soon as I hit 2 gb my speed went down. I was listening Pandora, watching YOUTUBE, now I have to wait 2-3 minutes for just for google search page to load! It is complete BS - UNLIMITED, dah?!! Let's all of us who experience problems just file BBB complains under FALSE advertising.
I flashed back to the older radio that the stock slide uses. I get better speeds on it.
This morning I received a text from Simple:
Your Simple Mobile Data service is at risk of being suspended due to violation of terms and conditions.

I checked my account and saw that I had used just over 2gb worth of data. I began the plan (firs time doing unlimited, had just bought an android and killed H2o's(at the time) 50mb limit in 2 days) on the 9th of this month (18 days ago) and was absolutely thrilled at my new Android + Simple experience.
I rooted a G1 I bought and will admit I tethered. I enjoyed bragging about my Android feeding my Chumby, netbook and my girlfriends Phone and how "I *WAS* the internet". This seriously damaged my droid ego.
It was the first month having it and I did do some pretty heavy compared to what I would normally do downloading so I think I can get by on the measly 2gb of bandwidth you get but I don't want to get stuck at the slow speed I've heard mentioned before.
Am I doomed? If it's like this I'd rather go with H2o's 50 plan since it has better coverage and the picture messages are unlimited, not taken out of the 100mb bandwidth. IF it's an unwritten rule not to go over 2gb I can deal, 3 would be friggin perfect though.
Simple Mobile New 2G "unlimited" plan
Have been using Simple Mob for a while with their $60 plan, in June I went abroad, and since they do not have roaming, decided to move to the $50 plan. Now I’m back, and while away they changed the $50 plan from 100 Mb to “2G unlimited”….that is just insane. 2G might be good enough for IM, chatting, and nothing else, and doing that you will never go beyond 100MB, unless you have the patience to wait forever for pictures lo download when surfing any web site.
Now I’m stuck until my new cycle, which will start in 20 days!!! I have called to complain, and they aren’t willing to do anything. At least they should refund me $10 since I can’t use their lousy 2G, and that’s what costs to have Voice + Text, well that didn’t work either.
Arguments were: “we are trying to give our customers the best value for their money….and if you have an AT&T phone you can’t get 3G, so that’s why we created this plan”….. Well that wasn’t a creation, that was an unfair modification, IMO. Very disappointed, with their lack of willingness to help.

What there not telling you (prob because they have no clue) is that the 2g plan falls under the "throttled" profiles on the epc apn (slotted throttling to hold you near 50kbps)
edge @ ~<300kbps is technically 2.5g tech (to simple that is)... cs and pr forget to mention that
wow what the hell???????? i have a sidekick 4g rooted and on custom rom gingerbread clone v2 and my speedtest is download: 0.12mbps upload: 0.14mbps... thats bull... everytime i try to watch youtube off wifi on my data it lags and freezes all the time.. it takes like 10mins to watch a 2 min video... is there a way to fix that????
Possible reason for slow data speeds on Simple Mobile
Seems like this is an older thread but on the same topic that has yet to have an answer or solution.
Since I've come into the same problem, I thought I would repost what I found out today on this topic.
Finally spoke to someone at Simple Mobile tech support that was able to tell me something that makes sense. At least in my case and it may be the issue for others as well.
I switched my SIM from a Verizon Motorola Droid 2 Global, that only supports EDGE / 2G connection to a Tmobile Sidekick 4G. Which is considered a Samsung Galaxy S 4G.
Well the problem is that it connects at 4G and since I am on the $40, when it does try to connect to the towers I am not authorized for 4G, so it automatically throttles me to 119..
He suggested I toggle 4G off and connect 3G and I should get full speeds... My problem now is that this phone doesn't have an option or toggle, that I know of to test.
Perhaps someone else that knows how to toggle a SK4G could give me a hint or someone could put this to the test on their, it would help the rest of us resolve this mystery.

Simple mobile throttles after 1gb of data per billing cycle.
sent from an HTC sensation on CM7 alpha #10
Below is my lengthy, but I think fair email about my past year with Sprint's nearly unusable 3G data network in my area.
To whom it may concern in Dan Hesse's office at Sprint:
Dear person reading this email, I have unfortunate news about how your network performance has been slowly degrading at the towers around the valley that I live in.
First off, here is the account info:
I live in in South East , which isn't the billing address (which is the office), but the home where I live when I'm not at the office.
When we signed up with Sprint last June, it was our first time using your network. You offered affordable family plans and had great service, according to your coverage maps and Consumer Reports ratings except that has ultimately not been the case the majority of the time.
As you can see for yourself, according to the coverage maps below (from sprint.com), there's perfect or nearly perfect voice and 3G data coverage at the billing address:
The first month or two that we had our EVO 4Gs, your network performed great and we were very happy with the service, but then in Sept. of last year, the 3G data completely stopped working/was slower than dial-up at the tower by the office. After calls to tech support, several techs claimed that the towers in the area had just been upgraded/updated...I asked: to what, dial-up?, since it wasn't just the tower by the office, it was the majority (and by majority, I mean 70%+ of the time) the 3G data barely worked or was slower than dial-up from the towers in and all around the Caldwell, ID area. Dropped calls were also a often occurrence.
When the Airvana Airave was released, I called in to tech support again, explained the situation and the tech found that we were experiencing upwards of 10% dropped calls, which is much higher than the avg. Also, tech support as never once admitted that it might possibly be the towers/network that's the problem; it's always: your phone must have issues, it mustn't be updated, ect., which I could see, except the same poor network performance was happening on all 3 of our EVOs, as well as all of my friend's EVOs in the areas. Several of them had also gotten the same story/runaround from tech support, too. Anyhow, relations sent us a free Airave, which was very nice of them, and that has made the phones work at the office/billing address, except the CSR in relations said that the coverage was 'very spotty' at that address, which I clearly don't see in your advertised coverage maps. With the Airave, 3G actually works and the calls are better, except the only reason for this is because it uses our ISP/internet to do so. The tower's 3G is still incredibly slow and much slower than advertised nearly a year later. I'm not at the office very often myself, so I can't provide you with speed test recent results, but I would suspect them to be in the 100-200k range.
Next, lets talk about the horrible service at the house. Home address is:
The service here (mainly data/3G speeds) haven't been any better than at the billing address; the sprint.com coverage maps also say that there is perfect or nearly perfect service here.
Surprise, surprise, it's also the tower that doesn't work in this case! By the way, there is an app called Antennas in the Android Market that locates which tower the phone is currently connected to, then plots it on a map - in case you were wondering.
I've called tech support and gotten the same story about how it must be the phone, not the tower...of course. Yes, my (previous) phone was rooted, but fully updated with the latest radios, PRI, NV and PRL), but other's EVOs on the plan are not rooted (but still fully updated) and they receive the exact same type of degraded service, therefore, it makes no difference to be rooted or not, even though the techs insist that it does. Finally, I gave up trying to communicate with tech support; retentions wouldn't send another Airave out for the house, either. The 3G data speeds have been hovering around 75 - 100kbps (1/6th of your lowest advertised 3G data speed, which is 600k) for almost a year - sometimes they reach upwards of 300kbps in the early hours of the mornings. For instants, one day I installed the latest Google Maps update which was about 5.75MBs; it took 28 minutes to download while I was out and about, but still in the radius/connected to the tower by my house...that's about 190kbps and probably a slightly more accurate speed test than using the Speed Test app since it was a larger file download.
Anyhow, I was in a 50MPH t-bone motorcycle wreck last week when a driver crossed the road directly in front of me when I was 10 feet from the intersection. In the wreck, my EVO was completely ruined and I was forced to get a new one. I just got home with a brand-new, fully updated, not even rootable (yet) EVO (I've been in recovery, without a phone, and haven't been home for 8 days) and guess what...the 3G data speeds have dropped even lower at the tower by my house since I was home last. Now, I can't provide a screen shot of the latest speed test results (because you have to be rooted for screen shot apps to work), but the results aren't good. The highest 3G data speed result is 23kbps, with the lowest being 4kbps; upload is slightly higher (typically is/has been) with 89kbps high and 37kbps low - that's out of 10 tests over 5 hours (every 30 minutes). Those speeds are completely unacceptable and less than half the speed of dial-up. Sprint's advertised 3G speeds are 600 to 1400...I'm getting 25.
And this continues, since its not just the towers by my house or the billing address, its about half of them, if not more. Like I said, I have several friends with EVOs who live in ; some of the EVOs are rooted, some are update, some aren't, ect. They're all experiencing the same lackluster service, even though they're in 'good' coverage - ALL depending on what tower their phone is currently connected too!
I finally stopped in to some of the local Sprint stores the other day and asked the employees there: What's up with the horrible 3G speeds? The guy at one store lied to me and showed me how he was getting perfect 1800kbps 3G speeds...of course the store had an Airave hooked up in the back, which the phone was connected to (when connected to an Airave, phones make beeps when initiating calls). The other 2 stores smugly agreed with me about how the speeds are super slow, even on their phones. On a side note, I really wonder how the hell you've been selling phones, except I know its most likely because 90+% of the customers don't know that its the crappy 3G speeds that make their email take forever to load, for Facebook to display a photo, ect.. One store did tell me that all they knew was that all of the towers from Portland, OR to SLC, UT were being updated and the ones here should have been fixed months ago.
Now, I know I'm not the only person experiencing these problems while also paying monthly for Sprint's completely and utterly unusable 3G data speeds, here, or in other parts of the nation. I know I'm not the first to email Dan's office about this problem with these same types of problems, too. I know what the replies from Dan's office have been about these types of network problems to other's. I don't expect a canned response. I don't except or want to get the runaround about the problems. I don't want to hear about how they'll be fixed by the 1st of some month in the near future, since that promise have always been broken when given to others. And I don't want a new phone because this one is the reason while I'm experiencing poor network performance.
What I expect is:
- A network/tower tech in my area to call and talk directly to me - I do do computer and tech work for a living and have read hours of information on forums and the internet; I know what I've been experiencing and I know what I'm talking about.
- Monthly discounts on all (3) lines until I receive your advertised 3G data speeds and service the majority of the time, not just when the phone is connected to an Airave our about 1 out of 7 towers.
In the end, I'm just your customer, asking for your advertised speeds and coverage, with no lies, runarounds or bull****. I'm not mad, just disappointed at how nothing has been resolved in almost a year. This is not how a business should be run.
Regards,
Man you sure do whine a lot. First about your bike accident, which I'm more than willing to bet was your fault and now about this.

Not my fault; couldn't have been my fault, so STFU.
You try living with 3G speeds half the speed of dial up, in fact, cancel your home internet and sign up for Netzero's dialup because I'm sure it'll save you a few bucks a month; I hear they even have a free dial-up optimizer that gets you an extra kbps or two.

Wow. Lol. That's all the input you have to give back?
Anyway, I'd like to see what the response is also. I had problems for about 2 months and after about 20-30 phone calls they came out and fixed the towers and haven't had any problems anymore. Hope it works out for you!

Color me unimpressed with 3G speeds, too. Though this is my first 3G capable phone, so I don't really have anything to compare it to.

My old phone was a Chinese copy of an HTC Touch 3G... but without the 3G. It was a fairly decent phone as far as Windows Mobile 6.1 phones go. I still use it at the gym as an MP3 player with a set of Sennheiser MM100 bluetooth stereo headphones because its A2DP music quality is far superior to my Evo. Before that I only had flip phones. I was on T-Mobile then.
The Evo, of course, outshines the old phone in every other way. It's a bonafide, pocket-sized Android tablet.
I too, want to know what the response will be. Please update this thread when you receive a response.
my 3g speeds have sucked every from Sacremento in the north, san diego in the south, tucson in the east, and all along the western coast from San Diego to Monterrey.
WHere did I get a good speed? Anytime I roam on the verizon network, and anytime I am in Mexico......Yes, it works great in Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada...
This latest update seems like it helped fix my speed though. Its still not the best, but hey I last checked in Tucson (yuck) and will check several locations between here an Los Angeles as I drive towards home!
Ahh, I miss Ensanada....
Great town to party in.

I'll keep y'all posted on any replies from Sprint!
As soon as you used the word "bull****", you invalidated the entire email.
IMHO, you will probably get a canned response with no followup. The wording and flow of your message was more akin to what a kid would send in. But good luck, I hope you do get a real response, along with some satisfaction.
