Issue with 2GB memory card slowing down system... - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I'm having a new issue, which is more of a nag than a real problem. I recently picked up one of the new 2GB micro-SD cards from Verizon. When the card is installed, I experience a 1-2 second delay from the time I hit the power button to the time the screen comes on. With the card removed there is no delay.
Is this a problem with the TyTN's memory management system? I'm not running any programs off the card. I kept a large mini-SD card in my K-jam at all times with no such slowdowns on power-up.
Thanks

I'm running a 2GB Sandisk MicroSD in my v1605 and I've not had any issues like this. It's as fast as my 1gigger.

Is it as fast as when you have no card in the system? I'm only talking about power-up from standby. Thanks

I press the button, it comes on. No lag at all.

do you have any today plugins that are checking the size of the card?

I have SPB PocketPlus which shows the status of the card. I have tried removing that feature, but I can't be sure it's still not polling the card. Do you think this is the culprit? I hope not, as I really like this software.

Losing Storage Card

I keep losing my storage card. It seems to happen when the phone goes to sleep.
When I wake my phone up - quite often it's lost the Storage card and the only way to "see" the storage card is to reboot the phone. Is there a known fix for this?
for me just removing SD card and putting it back in the slot works to revive it. You may also need to refresh file explorer by going to other folder and back.

Similar is happening to me - if I turn on the phone, some apps are closing down if they were loaded from SD, and WMP is losing what it knows about my current tracks from SD, I don't need a reboot though, just a reload.

I understand this to be normal behaviour for either wm5 or the universal, in that the storage card dismounts when the power is off. It also means if any apps are loaded on a storage card and are open when the power turns off, then they will be forced closed and maybe changes will be lost.
Matt
This is highly undesirable behavior, and I cant think this is by design. Losing my playlist everytime I suspend is bullocks, as is having to install everything to main storage because I dont want my software closing when I suspend.
There is a registry edit floating around somewhere which is supposed to delay the dismount of the storage card, but this has not solved the problem for me. MS or some-one needs to fix this ASAP.
Anyone else have a solution?

That doesn't work for me. It has to be a reboot - although I must admit I haven't tried taking the card out and re-inserting it yet - I'll try that next.

There is another thread here with some reg settings in it but the author says it doesn't work.
This is a PITA.
I had the same problem using a 1Gb card, sorry, I cant remember which one. I swapped to a Kingston ultimate 2Gb card and it now works perfectly. All my extra applications like Tomtom, pocketmusic and all the music files are loaded onto it and work perfectly.
Well I haven't changed my SD card and I have the same problem. It used to work fine, I could use mp3's from my SD for incomming calls. Then my MDA went dead and I got it replaced. I installed the newest qtek rom and now I have the same problem.
It's very annoying because when you are called the 'default' ringtone plays again because it 'cant find' the mp3 file you selected from the SD.

Could it maybe be rom related?

Think we need to clarify the issue as two problems were mentioned.
1. Is that the storage card is unmounted during power off - for this i dont think anything can be resolved.
2. The issue of the card not re-mounting when power on or crashing apps etc.

Option 2 - when you turn the power back on - the card is not there. A typical example is when playing something in Media Player and then the phone rings and you take the call - if you talk too long the phone goes to sleep - so when you hang up you have to turn the phone back on. media Player starts to play and when the buffer is emtpy it can no longer find the track because the storage card no longer exists.
Option 2
Mine does not allways not re-enable, sometimes it just works. Other times, it is in standby and I get a call, it tries to play the mp3 from my sd, but offcourse that's not there (because it just woke up) and then it plays the default windows ringtone. I have to manually change it again
PITA
I'm also having problems with my SD card disappearing but I think my problems are due to the card itself. I recently got an Adata 4GB to replace a SanDisk 2GB and a SanDisk 512MB.
I never ever had any problems with the SanDisk cards. So I believe either its a compatability problem with the Adata card due to make or the size or I simply have a dud card.
Others in this forum have reported using Adata cards without any problems, so maybe it's just my bad luck.
I sold my old SanDisk cards on ebay, so can't compare them to see if it is an Exec problem but I think I'll be back on ebay to get another SanDisk card.

I never had both problems on my Exec nor SD Card. I am using a 2 GB San Disk Ultra Card (Black). It does not matter if I took the card OFF or just shut down my Universal, the contents always shows up. No delays either. TCPMP and GS Player remember what I was playing. I never tried the built-in WMPlayer.

In that case can you confirm:
What FAT file system you used when formatting your card (and chunk size) and whether you have done any registry tweaks.

Slow Wake-up

Ever since I put in a 2gig memory card my 8525 has gotten very slow to wake up. Without the card it comes out of sleep almost instantly. With the card installed it takes 2-3 seconds. Any ideas on what might be causing this issue?
I'm running the vp3G v2.0 WM6 ROM and the memory card is a SanDisk 2.0gb MicroSD.
Also I have to reboot the 8525 after inserting the card to get it to recognize it. Is this normal?
Clear Skies,
Dave
Seems like something you have installed needs to access it on the card first. Check what programs you have that is most likely to run in the background and it's probably installed on the card and not the device.
I am getting the exact same problem except all i did was move my pictures and videos to my sd card... I have no other programs etc on my phone. please help
Same problem (solved)
I had the same problem and found that the advice of ThaiM was correct.
The offending application in my case was Garmin Q that seem to need to access the micro SD before allowing the phone to wake up.
Now wake up is quick but the unistalled Garmin Q is complaining that it can't find the garmin.exe. probably something in the startup folder of registry, should be able to sort that out.
Thanks for the solution

SD Memory card issues on HTC

Hi,
Recently bought a SHIFT. Fantastic device. Only problem is SD card shows error when removed and re-inserted.
Once re-inserted, the card is not visible. Under device manager, the following error is listed:
Windows cannot load the device driver for this
hardware because a previous instance of the device driver is still in memory.
(Code 38)
Suprisingly enough, the resolution suggested by our good friends at MS is to Reboot the device. Obviously this works, but the problem comes back once the card is removed again.
I have tried pretty much everything, include waving a magic feather across the keyboard, with no luck.
Things I have tried:
1. Clearing the INF cache - to rebuild he caceh files, as suggested by some forums - FAILED
2. Re-loaded entire O/S (from Fn+F3) and applied SP1 (no other software loaded onto it). Although this was fantastic for the overall operation/performance of the device, still - FAILED
3. Tried different SD cards - FAILED
4. Waive magic feather - FAILED, although it made me sneeze a few times
Note about (3) - SD cards used, 256MB Sandisk (40x), 2GB 50x Sandisk Extreme II, 8GB SDHC Extreme III C6 card. No MMC/XD tried, and don't intend to.
System Note:
Device is Standard HTC Shift, Vista Business 6.0.6001 SP1 Build 6001.
I would greatly appreciate suggestions or assistance. I would love to get this working, as ReadyBoost + 4GB C6 card will truly boost a 1GB device like this.
PS: I HIGHLY RECOMMEND SP1, and if you are not a visual junky like me, goto Performance settings and kill all the Vista fancies (i.e. it will basically look like XP once you do that). The device is super-fast for me, running Next-G on it. I use it with a very bulky share trading package (uses DotNet1.1) and it is very smooth.
Well I am facing simila problem. help would be very much appreciated.
I will try your advice on using SP1.
CTS
SP1 will definitely improve performance. I found that installing SP1 after I have installed software caused problems, especially anti-virus.
Read my post on re-install Vista and applying SP1, that seemed to work perfectly:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=384333&page=2
I'm having this same issue. I've already installed SP1, and am not keen on reinstalling the whole system just to fix this one small issue.
Apologies, I'm just writing a "me-too" post so I can get a notification if anyone suggests another solution.
do you have zone alarms installed by any chance? i had a problem where drivers wouldnt load for wifi, bluetooth, card reader and other devices but after uninstalling zone alarm, the problem ceased to exist.
No Zone Alarm here
Hi,
Perhaps my note was unclear. SP1 DID NOT resolve the issue, it did boost performance significantly. So if you have installed SP1 and still getting SD issues, you can hop into the same boat!
Specifically related to this post is the SD memory card issue - after reboot, inserting and removing card, putting PC to sleep/hibernate causes "SD driver instance in memory issue".
I am assuming this will definitely be an issue across all HTC SHIFTs using SD, if anyone has successfully used an SD card with the SHIFT (as in doesnt get the problem stated above), please post a note with the driver details (version, date, filenames) thanks. Note that the drivers will be listed under the "Disk Drives" category of Device Manager, not the controller.
arvinf,
I am using a 16gb sdhc having 4gb reserved for Readyboost. I keep readyboost always active, and the sd is always visible after resume. I hope it helps

my SD is fine after sleep and after hibernation too, tried reinsertion, fine so far.
vista is annoying with this popup asking if i want to scan the sd contents
anyway, driver version for sd under disk drives is 6.0.6000.16478 (from microsoft). (no SP1 yet, WM side is more important now)
the SD is a topram 2GB.

I usually have it on battery to keep the battery cool (and so prolong its life).
my powerplan is customized powersaving plan. but all I really did was turn brightness lower so that it lasts 3+ hours on battery (bit less than 3 with wifi) and adjust sleep/screen turn off timeouts.
No idea why, but I am not losing my 16 GB SDHC card any more. Neither from Hibernate, nor from sleep.
Even using Power Saver.
With or without the charger plugged in......
Maybe changing/swapping SD cards gave the problems.
I keep a log now and keep you informed.
settings:
Readyboost ON (4 GB)
Power Saver ON
strange...

same problem also. That code 68 error is also eating up my hapyness. It seems the problems apear somewhat randomly in my case.
Same here,
The readyboost solution didn't work for me..
No I loose the SDHC even after sleep
After coming back from sleep mode I see the SDHC 16 gb card but cannot open it.
There is this grey bar on top that fills slowly, but still, the SD card does not show its contents.
Every other program works fine.
Using readyboost.
Then I could not restart so had to force it.
I will call my lawyer?

Guys,
I dont beleive the solution will relate to power plans, on battery, etc.
There are a couple of posts here and there that suggest there may be an inherent bug in Vista on some SD card readers, and the SHIFT may be one of them.
I re-iterate the issue is SD card is not recognised once it is removed and inserted, and has an error in device manager "another instance of the driver is in memory".
I noted that CMONEX uses a different version of the driver than me (mine is 6.0.6001.18000.
Anyone else who has successfully inserted/removed memory card with this version driver? Perhaps I have a buggy driver?
FYI this post on another site is exactly the same issue:
http://www.eggheadcafe.com/software/aspnet/31492924/bug-in-sd-memory-card-dri.aspx
I also have this problem on a Shift with Norwegian Vista.
Sometimes the card is still accessible after sleep/ hibernation or reinsertion but more often than not the driveletter disappeares and when looking in Device Manager the card is shown but with an exclamation mark and text telling me that another instance of the driver is already loaded (like others here have reported).
A full restart or first insertion of the card will invariably be successful, giving me access to the SD-card.
I'm feeling a bit silly bringing this up, but for some reason I can not seem to find/activate ReadyBoost on my Shift. It is available (at least the option to test the flash-mem) on other computers I have, but on my Shift the option is just not there. Does anyone have any suggestions?
in my case i can't see the card at all after the device wakes from standby. No drive letter, no icon no nothing.

[Q] Possible culprit to HD2 freezing

I have read a lot of posts and threads on this forum. I see a lot of people have the same issue with their HD2 freezing and generally playing up.
I read the RED button reset models were possibly a bad batch but this is not really confirmed.
I read about the issues with the memory cards that were shipped with the phones as being faulty. So I decided to remove mine and put my sms and ring tone on the phone memory. So far going onto my 2nd day I have not had any issues with the phone. Before this I would have intermittent issues with SMS tone not playing when receiving messages, the phone itself just freezing up and having to perform soft resets very often.
Now I spoke with HTC and they are not wanting to send out a memory card replacement. So it seems as some get a replacement and some don't, not sure how this works. If the 16GB class 2 cards are in fact defective everyone should get a replacement.
Now I am not 100% sure if the card itself is defective or if the hardware in the phone possible defective. But I would rather test another card 1st then have to send the phone in and wait 4 weeks to get it back.
I do however have some questions.
1. Storing your sounds on the memory card is this a no no, or should it make no difference in the way the phone behaves? I mean if I have my sounds stored on the memory card should the phone work exactly in the same manner as if they are stored on the phone memory, with no freezing occurring etc..
2. I have noticed that battery drain has been halved when no memory card is present in the phone. Now is this normal that when the memory card is installed that battery drain is doubled? I have tested this with the phone in standby mode. Without memory card the drain is 1% every 2hrs. With memory card the drain is 1% every 1hr.
3. What class memory cards should be used in the HD2? Seems like the class 2 cards are causing issues or maybe the ones sent out are just plain faulty. What are the recommendations as a minimum class 4? or should I go with class 6,8,10?
The ROM is stock, hardly any applications installed only IGO8 and SPB timer. This the is the Telstra 9193 (Australia)
I have copied my data over from the memory card and formatted it. Will try it again to see if it makes any difference but I suspect not.
yes, your phone uses more battery with memory card in. Something to do with polling it.
I agree that htc should give everyone new cards. I am not sold that the card is the whole problem, but since I got a new card and new phone (5 days), I have had zero freeze ups.
I don't think the speed of the card matters a whole lot. Even a decent class2 is going to be faster at data transfer than the phone can handle.
Handset freezing or re-starting? Try a 2G sim to eliminate problem
My handset was returned to HTC for investigation 3 times with similar symptoms and I finally resolved the issue! I am on T-mobile UK network post pay sim. I tried a 2G sim card just to rule out a sim card issue (as I only had a 2G pre pay), and this 2G sim worked fine with no handset crashing, re-starting or freezing.
I deleted my Hotmail settings and re-entered, as it became apparent that my settings were trying to constantly download ALL 7,000 e-mails I have in my inbox!!! I later installed, ensuring that only a maximum of 50 e-mails were downloaded.
Not even the HTC technicians could get to the bottom of this one!
same here with similar issues, deleted all my emails that the hd2 was sync too and my freezings stopped. it also do it before during any syncing. Turned off full weather animation, any widgets i didn't need, and so far so good.

[Q] Performance of Focus with and without an SD Card?

Hi All,
I was wondering if someone who has added an SD card to their Focus could comment on the performance of it with it in and with it out.
Maybe a video of before and after showing a game loading or just a general comment on what they've noticed?
Thanks very much and looking forward to your responses!
Jonno
I got my Focus yesterday. Played with it all afternoon and evening. I already had a 16GB Sandisk class 2 card which is listed as compatible, so I went ahead and installed it.
Set everything back up and played with it some more, plus this morning. I've noticed no slowdowns or lagginess of any kind. I've got 22GB free after the install. Also tried the tethering and it worked great.
FYI: I did order the 16GB Kingston class 4 card, but didn't want to wait for it. I'll put that one in my old phone.
Verdict: very happy!
Thanks very much!
I saw a video just now with someone who had added a SD card to their Focus and it still outperformed the HD7. BUT, it was relatively empty (< 2 GB of storage used) which means that it is possible that more of the data was on the NAND memory than on the SD Card.
It would be interesting to see someone install an app without the card in and run it to see how long it takes, then add a card and install the same app and time it, and then fill up the card with media and THEN install the app (once the storage is almost full) and then time it.
May take some time but should be worth it in the end .
I know the data is supposed to be spread across any of the storage facilities available but we're not sure how it is done (simply filling it up, striping the data).
Yes, that's video was unfair, need a full data card to test, waiting

I ran for a week without an SD card and encountered many of the same issues reported (app hang/crash, marketplace lag/hang). I had to reboot a couple times my first week for one reason or another.
I've since added a class 2 sandisk 8gb and do not notice any difference, performance or otherwise. Incidently I have not had to reboot since I added memory. I have rebooted it once only verify the data was still there after reset.
Hope this helps,
I tested my coworker's Focus vs mine. He had a 16GB Sandisk class 2 card with >8gb of data. I had no card with ~7GB of data. I launched ilomilo on each phone about the same time. They finished pretty much at the same time.
I'll second the above, I've noticed no difference between having a card and not having a card except for the amount of storage available. I'm not saying there's no difference, I'm saying I've noticed no difference so I didn't bother measuring. Programs load and run at the same speed either way, media loads and plays at the same speed...no difference.
Guess I should add that mine is an 8GB Sandisk class 2 card. No problems whatsoever as far as speed, rebooting or anything else.
In my opinion, the best type of test would be a stock Focus vs a Focus with an added micro sd card with the phone+card loaded to the max with content.
I will test this and report back. I have a Focus stock and my wife has one with a 16GB Sandisk Class 2 card in it. I'll load it up and see if there is a difference over the weekend.
My Focus with no memory card has not crashed in the marketplace yet, my wife's does a lot...
Great, thanks very much!
Looking forward to the results.
This is really weird. My first test has one focus with a Class 2 Sandisk 16GB card but only 4.5 GB used total on the phone. The other Focus is stock with no card and about 4.5 GB used also.
Speed tests so far
Stock Focus -
- Marketplace and browsing the catalogs - much faster the first time I tested. after however it was mixed and occasionally the 16GB was quicker.
- People Hub - faster load and browsing.
- Bing Faster load just barely.
Focus+16GB - faster at loading Uverse and Netflix
- Loads Uverse faster
- Loads Netflix a second faster.
Both phones always get back to the main screen at the same speed, weird Also, occassionally the 16GB is slower, then the next test its faster.
I'll load up the card and report back.
The way you should test
Try this place the sd card in then add 9 gb of music and videos then install the program. I highly doubt the sd cards are causing program and marketplace crashes as I can get those to more noticably with wifi on. Also no one really knows what is running in the background. There is multitasking just not available to 3rd party apps so who knows if we are getting facebook syncs when things act weird. I would suggest not setting any accounts up and power off the phone then power it back on if you want a real comparison. The OS files would run from the NAND so dlls and other files that games and programs use should always run from the NAND but not the program it's self so loading the card with data that fills the nand then installing a program to the sd card would show if there are performance issues.
I've been very curious about this. I have a pny 8gb class 4 in mine. I've been paranoid about performance decreases, but i haven't seen any clear difference. But i would certainly appreciate a video or something confirming that there is no performance decrease, just to settle my paranoia.
When I first bought my Focus it was about a week before I actually installed a SD Card in it. Im using a 8gb Sandisk class 2 right now and have noticed NO difference in performance at all. Its still fast, smooth and runs beautifully. Ill be getting a 16gb Sandisk class 2 card very soon...I would assume that wont change things either....Seems Sandisk is the way to go if you wanna be safe...since Sandisk in used for phone memory by Samsung.
I have the Kingston 32GB card in... no issues what so ever and I have over 15GBs on the card to date. I took the chance and so far *KNOCK-ON-WOOD* nothing has come up
Should be getting a Sandisk 16GB Class 10 soon, will update.
