Is the ATOM good for u OR you want to SELL IT? - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

hi all .I,m thinking of bying the xda atom and i made a litle research over the internet ,so i found this site with reviews and i was very disappointing with what i read for this device(http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001707,39095540p,00.htm)
so i want to ask you if you are satisfied with this device and about the service. i am an ex-owner of qtek 9000 that was not very good for me and i sold it.i,m looking for something like ATOM .THE problem is here in Greece we do not have any O2 service .
thank you
*SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH

Yes I would buy it now.
If you bought the Atom when it was first released like I did, it had ALOT of problems and issues.
However, with all the new firmware releases, the Atom is now a stable and good product. You will find most of the complaints was based on the early release product.
If you buy the Atom, just make sure it has the latest released firmware installed, don't buy if it is "old" stock without the latest firmware upgrades.
While you can upgrade the firmware yourself, I have seen some posts about not being able to upgrade the firmware due to region issues I think.

Experimenter, that's just because they don't know how to put it in bootloader mode. So the installed ROM doesn't matter. I love my Atom!

Also love my Atom MORE NOW

Hi Mastiff,
Do you mind telling me where did you buy your Atom please?

JoseF

i bought my atom just last week in HongKong... coming from P800 and P900... i love the atom!

Any more news on WM5 AKU2 ROMs?

Most of us know that Microsoft released AKU2 for WM5 to manufacturers just before christmas, but does anyone has any solid leads on a release date for any updated ROMs that include it? I heard rumours about imate having a JASJAR update sometime in January - their support staff confirmed "sometime in the next month" but thats a bit vague!
I have a HTC Universal and am therefore happy to know about an XDA EXEC ROM or any other Universal device ROM
Here's my reply from o2:
Hi,
Thank you for your email,
The rumours are correct and Microsoft’s AUK2 update for Windows Mobile 5.0 has been released to our devices team. They are currently working on a ROM upgrade for both our Windows Mobile 5.0 devices.
Unfortunately due to the complexity of developing a stable ROM we currently have no timescales on a public release. All I can advise you to do is keep checking our web site. As soon as the ROM is released it will be available for download at www.my-xda.com under “software updates” for the relevant device.
I hope this answers your query, if you have any more questions don’t hesitate to contact us.
Regards
O2 Customer Technical Support UK
It is really heartening to know that the O2 support staff is going through this forum. It is the best way for manufacturers / distributors and operators to know the ground realities and what problems the user is really experiencing. Once again my appreciation to O2 UK.
Just wish others like I-Mate would do the same.
Kind Regards
? think you might be getting a little confused there...
anyway, I might be applying for a job at O2 Arlington Call Centre, don't know yet, if I do, and I do get the job, XDA Dev will have an O2 staff browsing the forums, that is if there isn't one or more already
AKU 2 is here late febuary or erly march
Hi
I contacted the danish distribuater of Qtek 9000 yesterday and they have AKU 2 updated rom ready late febuary or erly march

I'm in an O2 cal centre, but sales only, not suport...
The QTEK ROM with AKU2 will be out beginning of March , Mid-March.
This is a confirmed date.
Working on the law of averages and assuming the o2 Data Support guys are as switched on as normal mid-march sounds good.
Bearing in mind that currently AKU2 is rife with memory leakage and hence the fervent patching that needs to be done at HTC and o2 and the other OEMs ends.
Where can you download qtek roms from????
I still haven't found a decent official website of qtek!!
So even if they build a new rom, where do you get them from? Where do you check if they have released a new rom?!
*Patiently waits for the update*!

Atom Life

Atom Life is in the market now! It is really attractive to me. However I heard ppl said that O2 wont do much about the ROM update and less ppl willing to custom make some ROMs for it too. That makes me thinking...is it worth to buy Atom Life? Should I wait for other brands release some devices with similar spec?
Sigh...maybe I should stick with my HP rw6828 and wait...
I have the same thoughts. I want the XDA Atom Life but I really want WM6, as far as I know the Atom Life isn't even realeased in Australia yet but it is very soon, around the 19/3/07 so it hasn't even been released and it has an old operating system, that would be like ordering a brand new computer and getting windows XP, it's that stupid and I really don't think O2 like to do any upgrades.
Does anyone think WM6 will be avaliable for this phone or even made for it by developers on this site??? I have an i-mate Jasjam and Jasjar and the differences between the amount of activity on those forum compared to the atom forum is massive, does anyone really buy the XDA Atoms, they say it was a big seller but the forums show differently.
seal,
Too late, i am already in the hole.
I have sold out my HP RW6828 and gotten the Atom Life last week. I am in HK and Atom Life was released in HK on Feb 28.
So far it is great! I am satisfied it more than my old RW6828.
Hello,
is the Phonepad for Atom (that you can find here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=262768) compatible with Atom Life? thanks!
I am not sure. I didn't install that program.
Would you mind trying to install it please?
I just got my atom life too, and i wasn't too worried about not being able to upgrade to WM6. New OS's take notoriously long before the majority of software become compatible. Just look at the time taken for most software to convert from 2003 to wm5. I am sure by that time most users would've changed a phone, or someone would've figured out how to install wm6 in atom life.
I just heard back from O2 and here's what they said.
"Dear Greg,
Thank you for contacting O2 Asia Technical Support.
With reference to the issue that you have raised below, as you have noted, currently released O2 devices run on Windows Mobile 5 operating system. Please be informed that O2 Asia is currently looking into the possibility of Windows Mobile 6.0 devices (no further news as of this moment).
We do value the feedback you have provided with us. We will attempt to relay it to the relevant department for review and future possible action. We thank you for your time and consideration.

Once again no commitment. I tend to agree now with the above post, so many things still don't work with WM6 so I will stick to WM5 and skin it to look like Wm6.
Basically they say "we won't ever give you WM6 on already excisting devices, but in a while, when WM6 is starting to get stable, we may develop something that runs it". Atom Mark 4, I guess. And I totally agree, WM6 at the moment is far from leading edge. It's not even bleeding edge. It's moronic edge. Like WM5 when it came it's really only an Alpha system from what I have read in different tests. Like the original Atom. It took more than half a year from it came until it was truly a release version, not Alpha or Beta.
i allso don't think O2 will do it.. this is what i got from them.
Dear Ali,
Thank you for contacting O2 Asia Technical Support.
With regards to your query below, O2 Asia latest products (Xda Atom, Xda Zinc and Xda Stealth) are running on Windows Mobile 5, O2 Asia has not release any plans with regard to upgrading the Operating System of these product.
Should you require any further assistant, kindly reply to this email. Thank you.

Interesting with technical support personell who writes worse english than most Norwegian 16 year olds... Don't they have Word to spell and grammar check their mesages?
Couple of things I have yet to installed into my Atom Life.
1. Phone pad.
2. Portrait/Landscape view icon. I believe some PDAs have this feature for easy conversion of screen display by just tapping on the icon.
Actually, I installed Phone pad but apparently, it didn't seemed compatible as I believe it's for Atom Exec. Is it due to version difference? As for the Portrait/Landscape icon, is there a link here for the upload? Thanks!

WM6 available to Atom Life

This free update will be available to all current Atom Life users, and will involve either a download from the O2 Web site or a visit to one of its service centers.
The upgrade will change the operating system on the Atom Life from Windows Mobile 5.0 Pocket PC Phone Edition to Windows Mobile 6 (WM6) Professional. One significant improvement in WM6 is the ability to receive and send emails in HTML format.
Available from May 12, the Atom Life will become one of the first commercially-available Windows Mobile products to sport the newer OS. Atom Life handhelds sold in stores from June onwards will also be preloaded with WM6. In comparison, Dopod, which will be acquired by HTC, will be upgrading its selected devices to WM6 in July.
Furthermore, the enhancements in the O2 Atom Life like O2 SMS Plus and O2 MediaPlus have been tested on the new OS, and will still be available on the Atom Life after the upgrade.
In addition, O2 said it is testing WM6 on its upcoming Xda Flame as well, and that the rest of its products to be launched in 2007 will also sport the new OS.
At press time, O2 was not able to confirm if its other handhelds like the Zinc and Graphite would get the WM6 upgrade as well.

I suggest everyone to go to http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001709,62011618,00.htm and send them feedback regarding the news they have posted. At least CNet will go bother O2 for us (if a lot of us annoyed CNet enough, heh he).
Can the first person to update PLEASE post here?
Also can we change the topic to "WM6 available FOR Atom Life" hehe
Can't wait, I'm picking up my new Atom Life tomorrow!!!!!!!
Damm it. It already close to end of the day here and still no news from O2 site!!!
14 May 2007--As of today, the update to WM6 is still unavailable on O2's Web site or at its service centers. O2 has informed CNET Asia that this is due to a delay in the approval process with Microsoft. The company hopes to release the update before the end of the week, but was unable to be more specific about exactly which day this will occur.
refer to CNET asia website::
http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001709,62011618,00.htm
It's getting closer: the page for WM6 ROM upgrade is up at the official website:
http://www.seeo2.com/user/XdaAtomLife/template/XdaAtomLife_WM6_May2007_WWE.vm
I can see "Get the latest patches, utilities, software and upgrades here". in O2 site.
Still cannot download. Nothing there.
Wow, this topic is getting hot. I was contacted by CNet Asia about O2 delaying the release and hoping to tell you guys but it seems like someone else beat me to it.
Heh he... let see who'll the first to post when he/she successful upgraded to WM6.... but sigh.... I'll be outstation for a week. Waaaa
Xda Atom Life WM6 ROM Upgrade
O2 looks forward to bringing you the benefits of Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating system.
Do check back at this page over the next few days for when this exciting upgrade will be available.
Long long way to wait for a such upgrade package.
It seems like CNet is playing a major role in pushing O2 to inform us of the update progress.
I wounder if we could ask CNet to help us push O2 to hear our plight for other fixes.
hi but does anyone know if it could be use for Atom Exec?
Confirmed By O2 Hong Kong WM6 upgrade will be released within May 2007.

Err... if you would like to disable your Atom Exec... then you can try flashing it.
Anyway, unless someone here in the forum help you cook the ROM, then the answer is, No.

i-mate official WM6?

hello ppl...
a bit of an FYI here, but I just got off the phone with i-mate support and I pressed the issue of an official WM6 update for the Jasjam which won't void the warranty (that would also fix A2DP issues and such). The lady on the other end said that they are currently working on the new ROM and expect to have it out by the end of this month. I guess this has gotten my hopes up but I also know that i-mate is a lot of talk and no action as well. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. But come the end of the month, I will definately be calling and nagging them. That said, it was a real pain trying to find their phone number. They don't make it easy.
Its nice to dream Imate phone support is pathetic..Go and have a read of there forums.
"Dear Sir,
Thank you for contacting club i-mate™ Technical Support.
With regards to your query, please do note that we will not release a Windows Mobile 2006 ROM upgrade for the JASJAM or for any previous similar devices (e.g JASJAR, K-JAM, JAMin).
It is definite that we will only issue WM6 for the recently released i-mate™ devices (e.g. JAQ3, PDAL) and for the forthcoming Ultimate Devices - https://www.clubimate.com/ultimate/.
In addition, just in case you'll find a WM6 upgrade from other websites, we strongly advised you not to use it as it will only bring faults to the device.
If you have any other concerns, please do not be reluctant to contact us and we will be delighted to support you.
Regards.

they will be releasing a official wm6 update (ENU) until Jan 2008
there exist some wm6 rom updates in chinese and arabic and there is one
non official for the jaq3 im talking about the rom for the ubiquio 501 the ugly brother of the jaq3 if you are willing to risk you can try the ubiquio rom in your device of course having the backup files of the original & official imate rom
Need to Vent!
<INFO>
Well, with all these mixed responses from i-mate, I just called them up again to enquire about this WM6 ROM which was supposed to come out end of September. The lady said this time, "we are testing the ROM now and expect to release it by November. Many people have asked the same question. I assure you everyone will know when it is out".
</INFO>
<RANT>
Have these people never heard of project managers or sticking to deadlines? Come on i-mate - HTC and Dopod released their official ROMs a long time ago. i-mate are absolutely hopeless! If i-mate management requires someone to come in, do some hiring and lots of firing, cut costs and increase productivity, let me know. If it wasn't for that 2 year warranty that they have, I would have used a cooked ROM a long time ago. Also, just on another aside, warranty repairs done in Australia take 1 month. Why??
</RANT>
<HAPPY THOUGHTS>
I still love the HTC products and my phone, and the next phone I get will definately be HTC branded (never again will I have anything to do with i-mate), and all the people on this forum are absolutely fantastic

Hello Dinty,
I have a 2 yr warrenty with my jasjam, I flashed to WM6 (dopod official release)
Would not go back now. Hopefull if there is a fault, I will still be able to flash back. Unless I brick it during flashing, everyon knows here that WM6 will not fail your device.
warhammer, I got a different reply from Imate, much kinder about cooked rom upgrades, see below:-
Dear Customer,
Thank you for contacting Club i-mate™ Technical Support. As per your query, be informed that however there is several Rom builds available on the internet such http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=355 but we didn’t release official WM6 Rom build for any i-mate device yet as we are currently investigating possibility of installing WM6 on our devices.
Note: Rom build available on any website other than www.clubimate.com is considered Third party Rom build and we don’t guarantee its usability or functionality.

Hi Qwsoftware,
Have to say that I am amazed by the response they gave you. When I called back in September, they had said that by using a non-standard ROM the warranty would be instantly void. It sounds like i-mate have a clear case of "the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing". That said, I was never in the biggest rush to upgrade to WM6 back then, but now that I require more space (such as from a 6GB or 8GB microSDHC card) and would like the extra stability, I reeeealy want WM6.

hi l.e749,
Firstly, this is the forum for the HTC Hermes / i-mate Jasjam. The forum for the i-mate JAMin is the same as the HTC Prophet. Also, ROM's are one of the most discussed things on this forum.
Look at the WIKI under ROMs and Upgrading:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Prophet
and also, search the forums:
http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=+site:http://forum.xda-developers.com&hl=en&lr=&as_qdr=all
I've got a jasjam and im just annoyed iMate haven't bothered yet, theres text all over their website that says they wont be bothering either. Considering we've been hearing mixed sources on Wm6 for Jasjam for ages, i wouldn't be suprised if it doesn't come out.
It's all this crap that makes me never want to buy an imate/o2 device again, i'll be purchasing from Dopod/HTC next time. O2, my atom was average with lots of issues that couldn't be fixed. Jasjam, in my opinion after sales support is just CRAP.

[Q] XDA 2i/ Alipine

Hi i've just bought a XDA 2i/ Alipine as a cheap phone as i put my HD7 through the wash. Not too good i know. Whats the latest ROM that i can put on it EG WM6.5 ETC and how do i do it and where abouts are the links for downloads?
LOL of all the old HTC phones u could have get, u end up getting the one that has never been any custom updated rom (not even WM5 ), sorry mate, but i think u have better luck with the good ol' blue angel, or even the magician as i think they have at least WM 6 on it
P/S not sure whats the update now, as i own the alpine years back, u might wanna check the alpine section in the legacy device section of the forum just in case i am wrong
Assuming you do have an Alpine and not a Himalaya, sorry to say it but the latest for the Alpine is WM2003, somewhere I may have the latest UK-O2 ROM.
I still have my Alpine and a Himalaya which I have upgraded to WM6.5. battery life on both is woeful.
Have to ask, why an Alpine given the plethora of newer devices on EBay?
Hi thanks for the reply. It's because im at UNiversity and my phone broke so i just thought get a cheap phone which the XDA2i/ Alpine was about £20 so i just bought it as it had wireless meant that i could use it for the internet, texting, calling and email.
