1001 Uses for a PDA Stylus, what have/do you used yours for? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Was busy picking my teeth with my stylus earlier, (Yes I know it's disgusting, so don't ask to borrow my exec!) Anyway it got me to thinking what other usefull uses has everyone else found for their stylus's or is it stylii?
So lets hear it people?
Regards

Pick my nose and ears.
Lift up forensics evidence like a police officer.
Clean grout.
Drum.
Show kids cheap magic tricks like swallowing it or pulling it out of my ear.
Balance it on my upper lip.
Twirl it like a mini-baton.
Wield it like a mini-sword.
Throw it up against suspended ceiling tiles.
Mistaken it for a pen when trying to write on paper.
While I'm tapping on my head with it, if I come up with more, I'll post it here.

Cleaning fingernails?

Pick teeth
Clean ears
Balance on top lip whilst making Mick Jagger face
Entwine in hair/beard

Use as a mini spear just like in zulu
If only Michael Caine had said "Dont you throw those bloody stylus's at me!"

Play games with it like 'lose the stylus in between the floorboards then take hours to find it' ?

reset my:
Exec
Router
Laptop
mp3 Player
Set the clock on my car
Save channels on my telly

Emergency splint for a broken finger, always worthwhile remembering!

My 7 year old son likes to chew it, like a pencil :-( now it always falls out of my magician. What I do with it? Well I don't chew it, but clean my fingernails & ears, scratch my head, reset my magician, balance it on fingers & others things etc.
You can so much with it, except from normal writing it's the best body extension I can think of (yes I'm very narrow minded) LOL
M

I use my for defeating Balrogs, scurge of Middle Earth that they are.

The Magician's stylus just doesn't quite "cut it". But they're both cute.
Anyone notice the strange bend in the Universal's? Makes me feel quite >self conscious<.

it does do that, doesn't it.. that strange bend, I can stare at it for seconds.. I'm not sure I get it fully..

it also makes me constantly wander if I'm holding it the 'right way'..

Yes, my wife used to say that. Now she just doesn't bother, and I'm

Hahahah!

So the size of your nose & the shape of your stylus unreveals a girl everything you don't want to tell.
Hmmm, my stylus is worn & chewed.

My wife prefers the one on her Wizard, it grows in size when she gets it out and shrinks back down to a managable size when she has finished with it.
I wonder if the bend on the Universal one is designed in, so it can be used as an aid to erectile disfunction? "shudder"

There's a lucky man... I must be spending too much time programming, mine is as new
To bring this only slightly back on topic, I do worry about dropping it and scratching the "glans", in case it subsequently scratches the screen. Even with a screen protector, I notice I've still managed to scratch the scrollbar area.

I hear that you Wizard guys have trouble getting it in and out of the slot though? That's what I hear.

How to use VGA without PEN!!!!!

Sometimes in moments of rush, I find it tedious to have to pull out the pen to use my Universal in VGA mode, I thought what better than to grow my own biological pen.
I grew the nails on both of my index fingers long enough, and cut them at an angle so they form a sharp end. No more worry about loosing pens, and you can instantly control the UI.

Not only that, I find it very useful for other purposes too, such as scratching my ears, cleaning in between my teeth after a meal  and more!
Most importantly it will make your Universal experience easier. It takes only 2 weeks. Drink alot of milk, and ensure you intake enough calcium so your nail grow healthy and strong. You can use a nail file to further sharpen the pointy bit for higher accuracy.
Hope my idea has helped you.
KS
lol thats quite funny and at the same time kinda nasty.
Just out of interest what resolution settings have you used on your Universal?
640x480. Nasty, maybe but its made my life so much easier,i hardly ever use the stylus. 8)
Eugh. A thumb stylus might be a safer way to go.

Using ozVGA default settings?
yes, and the big buttons patch for the phone
wow thats a lot of software you have there
Opps nice one.
Can any one tell me is there a utility like d9 dial pad which ETEN 600.
Doesn't this leave scrachtes on your screen? The nail looks pretty sharp to me.
I doubt your fingernail is harder than plastic, or hard enough to scratch the screen.
Surur
no scratch, but if u have just cut your nails its a good idea to scratch the wall or ur jeans a little to make the pointy bit smooth.
To small
Hi,
I applied the true VGA hack and got it working but now I want to go back to default. Why? I think the screens are to small for comfort.
1. Am I doing something wrong? Can I make the screens/fonts bigger?
2. How do I deactivate the VGA mode? Can not find it in the hack tool.
3. Yes, I know, I'm an s hole: forgot to backup the files I replaced.
Can some1 send me a copy of the following files from the \windows directory of the Universal?
- Backlight.exe
- Camera.exe
- MicrophoneAGC.exe
- Power.exe
- WLanMgr.exe
- WModem.exe
Help would be highly appreciated,
Cheers, Alwin

LOL do you have a girlfriend? Cause if you do, she's not gonna appreciate certain 'actions' with your 'fyngus'.
hahaha, the middle finger would suit that certain job better.
But its convenience, especially in VGA mode, sometimes i just want to dismiss a notification or save a message as read, and it is tedious to have to bring out the pen for small manouvers like that.

[Q] G2 Slide Mechanism

Can anyone who's seen the internals of the G1 comment on the feasability of putting a G2 style upwards flipping mechanism in the G1? I guess it'd be hard and probably impossible, but if anyone can manage it, I'm offering a reward of 10 awesome points. 11 if they post a guide too.
Well never happen the g1 isn't made right for that kinda flip.
Wait...
The G1 is upwards sliding... when your phone is in horizontal layout the screen slides up... revealing a keyboard beneath.
The G2 is upwards sliding...in horizontal layout screen slides up... revealing a keyboard beneath.
what am i not seeing?
the g1 slides out to the left then up. The g2 slide up. Its a different kind of setup plus its on both the left and right of the g2

They didn't say it was being *jammed* up, they said it was being *pulled* up.
Hopefully this is a straight slide and not some insanely delicate multi-vector weakness B.S. I don't like how it appears to have come out of its track like that... if it can be pulled out like that, it IS a BAD SIGN.
You really have to wonder WTF is in the heads of these manufacturers. Is there something particularly terrible about having RAILS between the two parts to keep everything aligned and moving in a straight line? The DREAM was *OK* (but still not *great*) in this regard. We want DURABILITY, not insanity! And it would also be nice to have a ridge with a rubber damper around the screen to protect it from being dropped... but I guess that would reduce the number of replacements and repairs they can sell on devices that get broken through normal use.
Enough with the style and light weight. We want FUNCTIONALITY and DURABILITY! Give it a THICK METAL CASE. Quadruple the thickness of the glass. Protect the glass with rubber dampers and a ridge. I want something MILITARY GRADE and I'm willing to PAY for it -- and I think you will find that nobody worries about upping the price by $1 for ***ALL*** the extra materials it takes.

well if you want all that youll need to use one of big rotary phones with the antenna and hiddn dial-pad instead. i promise you that it will be 100x more durable than this, one drop of the G2 and say good bye, but one drop from G1 and she comes home safe.
What is it with these idiots, really?
I understand the ones who want to keep their device relevant by upgrading their OS to the most current one even if it's just basic funcionality, but wanting to physically transform one device into another.
Reminds me of that other thread with the guy that wanted to turn his phone into a gimped, tiny tablet.
Seriously, is there no limit to cheap?

Fixed my hinge. Instead of buying a new spring, I made a spring spacer.

Jchap808 made an excellent tutorial on replacing the spring.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003310
I wasn't sure I wanted a spring that snapped that hard. I really wanted something just a tad stronger than the stock. So instead of buying a new spring I decided to make a spacer that will pre-load the spring a little more to make the hinge tighter.
I used a #6 nylon screw. I took the screw and whittled the tip of it down so it would fit inside the stock spring. After that I just judged how much extra preload I wanted and used a razor to cut the nylon screw.

When you install the spacer you need to make sure that the spacer is towards the "inside" of the phone or the little turning cam part that loads and unloads the spring will not operate correctly. The cam rotates around a post and the post sticks up from the center of the cam a little bit. The spring normally sits around this post. If you put the spacer on that side it will prevent the spring from pushing the cam all the way down closing the assembly.
I went from not being able to hold my phone upside down open or closed without the screen drooping down. Now I think it's just about perfect, it feels noticably tighter, doesn't droop down, but still opens and closes easily. YOu can't shake the phone violently like Jchap808 does in his video. But if you don't think you want your hinge that tight or don't want to bother trying to order a new spring I think this is a good, simple, and cheap mod you can do.
I like the way you think! I was planning on doing something very similar
Great write up!
Good job keep it up.
nice tutorial, what kind of clear skin is covering the back of your phone. Was it easy to install.
Very clever. Nice job.
I'm personally not brave enough to take on the task of taking the phone apart, and don't really mind the stock feel of the hinge. But for those interested in improving the hinge action, this looks a lot easier than trying to get the right springs.
well in the case of what the OP said about it snapping too hard, you can always go for a spring that has a lower rate. I bought one that is 25lb one rather than the 31lb that jchap had his at.
@ redpoint73, Don't worry too much. If you check out jchap's video and follow it step by step and tweak just the spring length you'll be fine. That's what I did. I did not have a single scratch on it at all and it took me about half an hour. This is also considering that I did not even watched the video before hand. I just got the stuff, load it on the browser and worked off it.
Just wondering, where do you get these nylon screws? what are the specs for it?
Thanks.
pretty smart
Wow! That's one nice solution!
Too bad I still do not feel confident enough to disassemble and mess around my lovely Desire-Z.
(But I was brave/dumb enough to take apart my car automatic transmission and fix the transmission problem myself last month, go figure.)

if u can do a transmission, the spring fix is a joke. look for the hinge fix thread for the full video. it's step by step. you can't screw it up unless you don't listen.
This thread needs to merged with the tutorial thread and made a sticky!

How is the spring spacer doing so far? Just curious.

Wear mark from Dock

Hi Folks,
Well, I've had my TF for a few weeks now and its been great !
I use my Dock almost every day, mainly to provide more juice etc ...
Anyhoo .. i also use a Poetic case on the pad which i rarely take off, even when its docked. Today though i noticed a wear mark on the rear of the tablet and couldnt figure out where it came from .. untill i noticed that its in the same place the dock bracket edge is
It seems to effect one side more then the other (Right side... Left if you look at it from the back )
Has anyone else noticed this? .. The felt inside the dock bracket is still there so i dont know why it would cause it to rub ... and its only been a few weeks !!

rly ... remove the ASUS Model sticker
im still rocking my stickers too its been months
OP: Now that you mention it, I do notice some spots on the back of my tab that aren't as shiny as the rest of it. Thanks for pointing out something I probably would never have noticed. >.<
Seriously, though-- I don't really care at this point. Perhaps I would if it was noticeably discolored.

Why for? I still have mine on.
I have used the dock everyday for atleast 2 months, sometimes inserting and removing several times a day and I dont see anything. Guess I'm lucky
Sent from my Infuse... Love it!
saw the one at bestbuy and that one is marked pretty badly.
I have the same thing on the same side of my tablet as the OP.
My guess is that adding a little padding like a small piece from a micro-fiber cloth on each side of the dock may prevent further wear.
I know there is a felt-like material already there, but beefing up the padding may help. I haven't done anything to it
since it doesn't seem to be too severe.
Im going to do the same :-( its wierd it doesnt seem to happen with everyone though.
Small differences in manufacturing are to blame, its not really something they'd be able to see when making the device.
I also have a dock that does not lay flat when the tablet is docked and opened, it teeters a tiny bit and if it is on an uneven surface it will pivot around unless I hold it down.
Seriously... you are worried about cosmetic issues!
I'd be more concerned if my TF was overusing the battery, or the wifi reception was poor and dropping out of service.
Had it been a case of the screen was coming away from the casing or one of the ports was failing then yes I would understand.
Surely the basic operation is what you should be concerned about... not how it looks.

Well ... Put it this way .. When i noticed it, i wasnt shaking like a ****ting dog!.
Alls im saying is its not supposed to wear like that within a few weeks.
Its works as it should, battery life is superb etc etc...
You may not like your stuff to look good, but i prefer to keep my belongings in a decent condition also helps when/if you want to sell it on ...

Feels awesome and feels like you are writing with a normal pen.. i like it, so here how2build your own.
What you need:
- one of these guys (or similiar) (just the cap.)
- the grip from another pen
1. you have to remove the cover / top of the cap, so you get a tube.
2. pull the grip over it
top:
bottom:
3. ofc pull the whole thing over your stylus =) (not too much, you want to be able to remove it later!)
4. have fun

I actually use a pencil with mine most of the time... if the tip isn't too sharp it works almost flawlessly, and it glides over the screen very nicely and doesn't hurt the screen at all. I even bought some FullHB pencils (they're solid graphite, no wood) to use, and they seem to work even better than a standard pencil.
I just dug up the old full graphite pencils from my art school days and I have to agree: they are amazing stylusses (styli?).
Then I decided to go one better: I got a mechanical pencil with some nice fat leads (I went for 3mm HB koh-i-noors). Now I can retract the vulnerable graphite for safer traveling and still have an amazing and precice hard-tip stylus.
I might just take apart the official stylus and replace the rubber with a bit of graphite, but I'm not entirely comfortable storing that inside the tablet.

I had tried just a regular cheap mechanical pencil, and they don't work at all... probably because the lead is too thin and/or the casing is plastic and doesn't carry the conductivity to your hand. Glad you liked the pencil idea, though! Oh, and yes, it is styli
This is cool.
