universal dead?? HELP red light!!!! - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

Hello, earlier today i felt the device was very warm, i tried to switch it on but it dint respond, even to a reset. when i plugged it into the wall charger all i get is the right hand LED glowing red.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!! how do i hard reset it or get it to work again!!!!!!
i would call in orange care, but im out of the country and i really need the pda functionality!!!!

Unlucky. The 'red' light on most HTC devices indicates a serious power problem, usually it means that the battery is dead (as opposed to simply having run out of charge) or very close to death. You can probably get it working again with a new battery, if the incident hasn't damaged any other components.

i had this with my JJ after I accidently let the battery run down, I plugged it in and led went red and unit would not power on, left it plugged in started scanning the manual and web about a red led, 30 mins later, JJ just switched on and all fine.
It's worth a go and ive not had problem since

i dont think that was the case...
i have a feeling it might have been a short or something, because the unit was SERIOUSLY hot.....
nothing i did worked....until............
final time before giving up, the light was still red etc.
i figured what the heck, either way its dead and im going to get a replacement.
i then gave it fairly hard thump
the red light disappeared. i thought to myself, oh crap, i've really killed it.
then i reset it............. IT BOOTED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and all my info still intact......brilliant.....im still going to try and get a replacement when i get back, but thank goodness.
and here i was thinking the last computer to respond to physical violence was the old 486'es hehehehehe

Actually, it's called percussive maintenance, "the fine art of whacking a machine till it works"

hehe, i'm an IT technician and it's the first thing i try, especially with Printers.....
They don't teach you that on MSCA courses.....

I would recommend not using the machine too much until you can get a replacement battery if I were you. Lithium batteries will get very very hot (in some cases expand and ignite) if they are dis-charged too far. Most equipment which uses lithium technologies will have a voltage cut-off on the power input. As each cell is a nominal 3.3V-3.6V, this is often at around 3V in order to not discharge the battery too far. I would have hoped that this was a HARDWARE function rather than software. However with what you have described, if the voltage cutout was somehow disabled, then this could explain the problems.
Of the units that I have seen in the past like this, the red LED would describe the battery voltage being too low to safely power the unit (i.e. battery be dead). Generally a couple of minutes charge will bring it up to a safe working value. However, after 30 minutes this certainly should have been enough. On one of my motorola units, the battery has expanded a couple of millimeters as it starts to dissociate. It may be worth you checking to see whether the battery in your universal has distorted in any way.

Hmm the red light comes on mine all the time.
It just means the battery is low and the unit is charging. .
It should turn green when the battery is at or near optimum charge.

no....thats not the red, charging is orangy when i say red i mean PROPER red. battery is not distorted, and to the best of my knowledge the unit had a good charge, im pretty sure it must have been some kind of hardware short, and am going to call orange as soon as im back in the country.
dosent explain though why when i whacked it it started working again. the whack instantly made the light go out
i did a battery rundown test as soon as i got the unit, and posted the results on the forum, if the cut off was not working, i would have ended up with a red light then.
i dont have the manual with me now, but is there any documentation on the red light?

Sorry to drag up this old post.
My friend dropped my phone (Orange SPV C500) a few days ago on to a tiled floor. The phone didn't appear to be broken or faulty at all at the time. I even managed to use TomTom navigator to go to the airport, but for some reason when I looked at it before I went to sleep, the phone was off. I assumed the battery had gone (even though it should have lasted at least another day). I tried to plug in the mains charger, but the LED showed a red light. I left it plugged in while I slept, but it was the same in the morning. The phone won't power on at all. I've read that this normally happens on a flat battery, but I am pretty sure it still had juice for another day.
I brought a new battery, but to no avail, the phone still shows the red light when plugged into the mains. No light at all when plugged via USB to my computer. The phone won't power on at all.
It must have broke something when it was dropped. But I'm confused as to why it took a few hours to take any effect.
I also notice that even without the battery in the phone, the LED will still light up as red when plugged in to the mains.
I've tried whacking the phone now, but nothing. Anyone have any idea whether it can be fixed?

this is damn scary! Every day more people add on to the "my univ's gone dead after a small drop" community :?
When my univ was brand new, a friend of mine dropped it from a coffee bar table 3 feet high, and i still heave a sigh! Cant believe nothing happened...!
But one thing i guess we all know, its a "drop" away to kiss our device good bye
hope you get it back up and running m8! look around the forums, there are lots of breakdown-solutions threads...
cheers,

nice work afhstingray
do you think it was a baterry problem.
i have often used my battery till tit just ran out, from what i read in the post it seems to be a bad practice. anyway to turn off the phone

i doubt it was a battery problem as i've been using it until now without problems. (i didnt get a replacement as soon as i got back cos im waiting for this unit to get a bit scruffy before i get it replaced)
i had this once on my c500 as well, but taking out the battery for an hour did the trick. so i dont think the problem is related.
i've dropped my universal quite a few times already and im happy to say other than a few annoying dings on the metal plate with the orange logo, its working fine. and 2 of the drops were pretty bad ones too, i thought for sure the screen would die or crack. guess i got lucky and it hit the floor at an angle not too critical

total stab in the dark but maybe a broken connection on charging circuit? that could be why phone was ok then battery died and its now unable to charge?

wouldnt it have worked if it was plugged into the AC then?

Well my Exec was dropped onto concrete at the petrol station whilst I was trying to sort out TomTom and fill up my Yamaha R6 bike at the same time
No problems, just a couple of case marks.

Athena dead or dying........any miracle workers out there?

Background:
I have had MANY PPC's (so many I can't even count them) and I've loaded many different cooked ROMS and such on most of them so I'm not a complete noob on these things (don't claim to be an expert either).
However, my most recent acquisition is an HTC Advantage bought at CompUSA. I've read most of these came with a test ROM and mine was no different except for the fact that when I attempted to update the ROM to the "official" one provided to me by HTC it would not work. I always got the error "Connection lost" about half way through the process. I tried it numerous times and it never worked. On some occasions it would get stuck on the bootloader screen but I was able to get it back to working status (still on the test ROM).
I decided to try installing step 1 of Ollipro's SPL to see if that would help loading the HTC ROM. Turns out that wouldn't work either. It would get stuck at step 1 where it would ask if "PPC gone idle and didn't work or to wait 30 seconds". Tried it many times and would try to get it to keep going but the grey box on the bottom left would say the "parameters were incorrect" and would give me the option to quit, which I would. No problem, at least my 7501 was still working.
After that I tried the official HTC ROM again and I got the same "connection lost" error I had previously, except this time I didn't get anything on my PPC screen, just a black screen, not even the battery charging light behind the joystick lights up anymore. Soft reset...........nothing. Bootloader reset....................nothing. Hard reset.......................nothing. No lights, nada. The only flicker I get is if I try a reset wheen the power cord is connected. A red light flickers behind the joystick whenever I click the reset button. Any ideas or any help?
Sounds to me like the battery is just dead. I bought one at CompUSA (had the test ROM also) and I got the red ring around the joystick too when I tried to turn it on in the store. I left it plugged in awhile and it finally booted up okay. I then replaced the test ROM with the one and only available for the X7501 on HTC USA's web site. Good luck and I hope you get it working!
I think it could be battery related as well but it had a full charge when this happened. For some reason the unit has lost communication with the battery. I'm at a loss.
I got the same problem like you man !!! but i bad luck and so stupid man , i did with HTC X7501 then it dead after that i bought the X7500 then did it again , holy "... " it dead again....man ...So how your phone now bro ????
I left out the battery a half day and tried it again but still dead. Then I left it charging overnight and tried it again but still dead.
I can't believe this. I've never had a bricked device that can't be revived but after so many have seen this post and still no solutions I'm guessing it's no hope.
I met the same situation when I started to unlock Athena ( TMobile Ameo) within not fully charged battery ( less then 70%).
Solution ( try to make BL mode) with connected wallsocket charger ( not connected to PC USB slot) or find 100% charged battery. It helped me two times.
After many tries it changed to BL mode .
Now I didn't start unlock/change ROM without 100% charged battery.
I have the same BIG Problem, only red fliker when soft reset when AC conected. I wanted to update rom from russian to english and phone stoped working (black screen), and battery heats when inserted in phone . nothing to do? i read everything but i have not got any solution. I think it may be bios dead. helap us please

"heating battery" (i.e. discharging when inserted, you mean?), no charge led = dead bootloader indeed.
I get the same problem. My device is work, but not charge. Also like yours i have red ring around the joystick when the battery is taked out. And if battery inside, when i make a softreset it blink one time, continued to load but not charge.
You`r speaking all wonderful. But have anybody found the solution?
Hearing these stories makes me nervous. I'm on the stock ROM (mine came from CompUSA with the latest ROM and I don't have an urge to try the cooked ROM yet). I've been using my Athena daily for 4 months, it charges correctly from several different chargers I have (car, computer USB, stock wall charger, aftermarket wall charger).
However, one day 2 weeks ago I went to make a call in the middle of the day and my Athena was dead. D-e-a-d. Usually I can make it back home at night and still have 90-100% on the battery meter, so with no use in the middle of the day and a dead battery, this was weird. It wouldn't turn on, no soft boot, took the battery out and put it back in, and always got nothing.
I bring this up here because when I plugged it in, I encountered similar problems that others here are describing. It wouldn't turn on, and it didn't give me the orange charging light behind the joystick. I ended up leaving it plugged in for a while and finally I got a red ring, not the usual orange. I've only seen red when the battery was almost dead and the unit was on. Then after some more time the ring turned orange and at this point it would turn on again. I still have no idea why my battery died so fast and hard.
So, is there a problem with the battery charging system that is starting to crop up in units that have been used a while???

Hi i am no expert but i had simaler problem no display or no lights round ring no responce to any commands (ie hard reset and bootloader ) only red light flickred on reset button all i did was removed battery while pressing reset button and placed new battery and left it on wall charger for couple of hours and before doing hard reset i pressed reset button 2 to 3 times and green light round the battery came up so i tryed bootloader and it worked and insted of flashing it with pc i just loaded the img in sd card and flashed it while whole thing was on charge (i had tmob test rom before ) which i think is best way to do no hassle of losing connection or failing in half way and it works like a charm
hope this helps
and ya if you have a spare battery it dose help
New battery?
I'm a wizard user (and lots of former PDAs) looking to buy and Athena, maybe.
Has anyone tried a new, right out of the envelope, battery? these issues sound like worn out Li-Ion batteries to me. I've had them completely conk (won't take a charge at all) if I let them go completely down, and I've had them wear out and stop taking a full charge (down to maxing out at about %20, but sometimes showing %100 depending on ROM status) when I kept charging them while they're already charged.
Li-Ion batts don't sit for long periods too well, either, so if they're sitting on the shelf at the store/warehouse, they may be suffering even more than one that has been used since earlier in its childhood.
Perhaps the answer is a switched charger that stops charging when the battery (not the ROM/unit reading) gets to %100. ???
I didn't see anything like this posted. I'm terribly curious to see if anyone can resolve it.

Really annoying problem...

Hey guys.
I'm experiencing some problems with my Touch HD. When I get it to start I'm really happy with it and every program runs as it should.
My problem is the battery or something like that. I can have the battery power at 70% one second and the next the phone is telling me to either charge the battery or the device will shut down. I try to start it again but at the start screen it says Battery level to low, your device will shut down.
When I try to charge it the LED under the power button will show a solid amber light, telling me that it's charging, for about 7-9 seconds and after that it will either start flashing between amber and green light or just turn off.
I've tried having it like that over night and try to start the phone in the morning and the same message appear on screen, "Warning! Battery level to low! Your device will shut down!"
Read in some other post about someone who had a similar problem, but not quite the same, and that was resolved by removing the battery, plug in the USB cable for a few seconds, disconnect everything and then put the battery back in and start the phone. This works for me about 30% of the time. When it works the battery shows about 60-80% power.
I've tried a hard reset and I've tried to contact HTC without any success. Any suggestions from you guys, you seem to know almost everything there is to know about these phones.
Thanks.
/Markus
Have you tried keeping the battery out for a day?
When I got my phone, the first 7 charges I turned the phone off and charged it all the the way up (to get the calibration accurate). Now the battery life is excellent, I can use it for couple of days without charging.
You should try returning the phone, seems it is fine software wise. Can you use the phone with the charger in? If yes, then there is probably something wrong with the battery or the hardware that is interacting with the charging.
I've tried keeping the battery out for about 24 hours but it didn't help. I can't start the phone when I have it plugged to the charger. I'm going to return it today and see if they can just exchange the phone in store or if they need to ship it somewhere to be repaired
Thanks anyway.
Sounds like a defective battery to me...
That's a good idea, better to get a new one.

switch off wifi, install Advanced Config, select all power management enabled
and try again. i also had the situation that my hd took 1550 mA. so the battery was sucked empty within several hours. now everything runs perfect...
Have exactly the same problem
I have exactly the same problem. One moment the phone works and charges fine and the next it shows irratic battery levels and eventually needs to be shut down. Following the shutdown you get the 'Battery level too low' message on startup, right after the Smart Mobility screen. In my case I think the problem mostly started when the phone was either just connected to a PC using the sync cable or when trying to top-up the charge using the wall charger. I also noticed that when the problem appears the plug symbol would appear (indicating it is charging) or sometimes not and then when checking the battery level, the indicators would actually go down sometimes losing 2 or 3 at a time until there is only 1 left and the phone says it needs to shut down. Pluging in the wall charger does not help as the LED indicating the phone is charging only stays on for a few seconds.
Now, I had many trials with removing battery, sim card, memory card or any of those in combination and sometimes these seem to work, but I think the key is the temperature of the phone. Every time I went to the car to drive home, where it was cold, the phone would start charging again, when just before that it would not react to anything all the time I was in the warm office.
I have now contacted HTC and am sending it to their repair centre tomorrow. Hopefully this is recognised as a fault and I will get a replacement. BTW, they arranged for a free courier pickup. Not bad, but the key for me is that the phone is being replaced as I really like the phone.
Update: Got a replacement after 1 week
Got my replacement phone today and hope that this time I have no further problems. I also had to return my previous one with a screen problem (see my post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=439410&page=2).
Everything went quite smootly and I liked the offer of a free of charge UPS pickup, so the only complaint I really have is that HTC send me a new phone but no replacement screen protector. Just the original screen sticker (the one with some writing on it) had been stuck on. It was in a bit of state like it had been taken off and put back on several times. I just called them to send me a replacement screen protector, but I don't hold my breath to get one. Probably end up buying it from the website.

My LED Is blinking orange/green during charging and battery is draining.

This doesn't look good to me. I had my phone tethered to my laptop while I slept which I do often with no problems. Today I got up and saw the LED was blinking orange and green. I looked and the battery was down to 11% even though the status bar showed the battery as being fully charged.
I popped the battery out and in, tried again, same thing.
When I plug it in the LED stays solid orange for about 5 seconds and then stats blinking.
I tried it on the OEM charger with phone turned both on and off.
It doesn't appear to be charging and the LED's are blinking green, orange.
Does this seem like a bad battery? I live in the US so accessories are hard to get, I don't have a spare battery to test yet.
What do you suggest? I have a new battery coming but it's going to take a while before it shows up.
I had that too for a minute. I suspected a faulty charge / sync cable, swapped it out, and never saw these LEDs again.
Had that too. I'm using a second non OEM Battery, I will try it with the original and give feedback.
I had that with my small charging-cable (non OEM) in my car.
I've tried multiple cables. I'm hoping the battery is the culprit. I have another one on the way but it's literally on a slow-boat from China. If it's not the batter then it's the phone and that's no good. Doesn't charge on, off or in bootloader mode. I've read all the threads and it really could be either. Fingers crossed.
My LED was blinking orange/green too
I was using a non-standard (cheap) battery when this suddenly occurred. Changed to original battery and everything was OK again. Seems like the original batteries are best after all (even if they cost ten times more in my country).
Think that too. My Original Battery works well. The Battery from China is "blinking" sometimes for about 15 minutes.
same or even worst problem
During the first day i buy the phone and charge for 10hour, after that i switch on my phone i was shocked my phone wasn't charge at all but the indicator light show from orange to green.
so i charge my phone for the second time, this time its show 100%. i browse the phone setting and function all that less than 30min and before i sleep it was left 70plus % and after i wake up its left with 20plus % and the timing from i sleep to wake up less than 5hr. my wifi ,gprs bluetooth 3g everything is off except the alarm.
now i charge my phone for the third time after charging for 8hr i switch it on and it did charge but only 20plus % and i continue charge my phone for the forth time. i sucessful switch on the phone and its show 100% but it suddenly turn off, i was shock don't know what went wrong i try switch on the phone and its show the phone is low battary.
so i charge it again and the indicator light turn green less then 1min and my phone becoming weird i can't charge and switch on. once awhile it can be turn on.
so i try charging it again and the phone keep on restart.
i got so fedup as the phone is a brand new set and use it for less then 1 week. i'm going to get it fix tomorrow.
anyone with the same problem or know anything when wrong can help pls.
Hard reset helped me + check if a cable is deep enough in the phone
i try already its still the same. do u have the same problem.
i was charging my phone 2 day ago, and listening to music and downloading a lot of mb from internet with wifi, and i putted it under my pillow
after about 2 or 3 hour i pulled it out and saw the orange and green blinking
my phone was like a fire stone, it had a very bad result, the lcd doesn't had touch sensitive anymore
after 2 hour the sensitivity came back, but the story didn't finish yet.
after that, every time i charge this phone, the lcd sensitivity goes off,and after i cool it down, sensitivity comes back
but now while i'm sending this message, the half of screen doesn't have any touch sense what is your suggestion for me???
I had the same issue with my original battery - turned out that the middle pin in the battery connector had been bent when I swapped batteries - I straightened the pin back to normal position and now it charges fine again.
Jon
i am having this problem too. the led is blinking and the battery is not charging. i am forced to use a cradle to charge it up.
The orange and green blinking on charge happened to me a couple of times. In all instances the phone was too hot due to having it covered or temperature of the room was also too hot. Allowing it to cool made it work again. I haven't suffered from this problem ever since I started keep it well ventilated. Hope this helps.
yup. i google for it. and notice it due to overheat. i tried with air con on. it seem working well.
but for me. i cant feel any overheat (like hot/heat on my device when it start blinking.
hide.
The blinking light is the phone saying its overheating
this happened to me but the worst thing was I could of bought a 1500mAh battery from Hong Kong for something like £5/6 but i decided to buy one from my own country the UK and i read that an extended type was the best so i bought an extended 1350mAh for £7.99 thinking i would have no issues but its with this new battery that it overheats if i am charging via wall or pc and using my phone!
using tbattery it says the battery is only a 1230mAh anyway!!
but with my original battery i can charge and use at the same time so kinda annoyed i thought i was paying more to get better but i guess i live and learn
so now i have ordered an 1600mAh for my phone for £5.99
i should just use it as a backup battery .
p/s : what is the average battery temperature ?

I bought 2 batteries from eBay. The cheap Hong Kong one does this at 60%. The other one was from the UK and claims to be the real thing, and it charges all the way to 100% and has given me no problems (it's the one I've been using for the last 30 days).
Moral of the story: Buy official batteries.
Hi all,
a few days ago I`ve got the same issue. Please don`t laugh, but sollution I`ve found is really funny.
Firstly I was trying to flash different ROMs, Radios with no luck. Trying to clean battery contacts and phone contact pins, especially the middle one, with no luck again.
Then, thinking logically ( ), I`ve found what changes occure to my phone. I didn`t flash a new ROM, didn`t intall any new software and so on before the charging become naughty. The only thing that changed was the temperature around, now here is hot like in hell: about +30C. So I plugged in portable charger and put it with my hd2 into refrigirator (changed it to maximum t to avoid any inconvenience) into low humidity container. In a few hours battery stated was shown as 100%. The next time I was trying to charge it again in the room, but got only blinking led, had to put it back into refrigirator
Seems that battery or phone has a temperature sensor, which stops charging when batt t raises above safe level. I believe sometimes this sensor fails or smth like that and charging can be stopped even when t is not so high..

[Q] battery problem, red led light is blinking, bought new battery, no bettering

Hi guys!
I know, that there are some threads about the topic, but i think, here it is a bit different...i´ll describe:
Everything was OK with my withe G1, since I forgot to recharge the battery, and the G1 switched off. I wanted to recharge it, but - you know- the red led light blinked...i read different threads etc, and then I decided, to buy a new battery. The new battery arrived yesterday, and I put it in my G1, tried to switch it on, and it worked. I was quite happy! I taped it on the charging unit, and the first problem: the battery display didnt moved, it remained at 23%, also after a few hours at the charging unit. I knew the problem, because it was the same with my old battery, but it doesnt interest me, because the battery recharged, only the battery indicator showed that not. I thought OK, dont thinked about it, and waited. Today: I took my G1, yes, battery display at 23%, no problem. I switched it off and after a few hours I wanted to switch it on. Second problem - F**K! The red led light blinked...and now, the battery doesnt recharge at all. The G1 works now only, if the charging unit is put on it, if I remove it, the G1 switchs off. Its the same behavior with the old battery.
I dont know what to do now, because i dont think, that it is a hardwarebug, because yesterday it worked, with the brandnew battery. Or is it possible, that the G1 destroys my batterys while switching it off?
I hope, that there are solutions for this...because im loosing my temper slowly...
Can you charge the battery if the phone is off? Red led light should show. You should wait even 30-60 minutes for this - it depends of battery discharge. If the red light will not show this will means that your hardware is broken (phone or phone charger). You can try use another phone charger to test.
That works sometimes....at the moment not, but one hour before, yes.
I had the G1 with the USB cable on the PC, the phone was off, the light was red (not blinking). I waited about 50minutes, then disconnected, tried to switch it on - nothing except a red led light - blinking
At the moment, there isnt any led light, if i connect the phone to the charger unit or the PC...
It looks like hardware problem :/
Would be OK, because there is still warranty.
But what irritates me, is, that it worked without problems, when the battery was charged. Also with the new battery...worked good, since I switched the phone off.
I only want to be sure, because the return merchandise authorization (rma) takes quite long time...
I have the same problem. last week i bought the phone, and used it till the phone battery was empty. I tried to recharge the phone, but i wouldn't go on, only the red light blinking. I had the phone charged for 2 days, with the og charger, no result. Looked like the phone was dead.
Today i tried it again, still no result. All of a sudden the phone turned on and was charging. It is now on 99%.
Should i contact HTC?
edit:
sorry, wrong forum
Just a wild guess. It could also be the ROM that you have. I had a similar problem with my battery drained out like that with flashing red light. Come to find out later that it was something to do with the ROM (CM6.x) that I was using.

[Q] n4 is completely unresponsive (dead)

So this is what happened:
the phone discharged fully and i connected it to charge. then i got a flashing red led. seeing this as a bad omen i tried to turn my device on - no luck - it wasn't responding.
i unplugged the charger and plugged it back in and again the same result, then again..... and i got a solid red light. so after a few times of messing about with it , trying out a few sources of power and such i got it charging (the battery logo appeared). The charging lasted for ~30 sec and it went black.
So after that the n4 is completely unresponsive. No flashing leds no backlight on screen, NOTHING.i tried out a few chargers and cables and beside those i used a genuine n4 charger (it's 100% working - i tried to charge another device). i left it there for the whole day to charge thinking that maaaaaby the battery ran to a complete 0 and i just need to give it time, as you probably guessed it, that did nothing.
In fact, i think the phone is not charging at all. The reason i think so is because the wall charger is emitting a faint high-pitch squeal regardless of the fact that the phone is connected (it should be squealing only when it's plugged into socket and the phone is not plugged in it)
so TL DR:
n4 is completely dead, no signs of life. The things that were tried:
a handful of chargers and cables that are 100% working on other devices
trying to boot with a combination of volume buttons pressed
holding the power button for 60 sec. while plugged in
prolonged charging (~7 hours)
verbal threatening to sell the damned thing if it's a serious problem
so that's that. i should get my tools back from a friend on monday. i'll try to take it apart, maby there's a loose connector here or there or something. Any ideas what i could try before that?
Some searching around the forums wouldn't hurt. Try this for example.

thanks for the link, that seems to be worth a shot.... i'll be able to take the phone apart on monday, that's the earliest i will be able to try it. i was wondering if there is anything i can do until then to remedy the situation. I mean i'm really getting a kick out of my old sony erricson k300 but i kinda prefer the nexus and would prefer to fix it asap.
ok i fixed it
i used a 3v source and held the contacts manually for 5 min. that returned it to the red blinking led state and after leaving it to charge for 5 min it returned to the battery icon on screen. thanks for the info again.
