Question to owners of the qtek9100 - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hello,
I'm planning to buy a new pocket pc, my choice would be the qtek9100 or the qtek2020i. I've spend a lot of time reading and comparing, and need to know some information from the people who own a qtek9100.
1) Is the qtek9100 able to playback mp3 and run tomtom5 at the same time? I'm asking this because of the omap 850 (ti) cpu and the 64 mb internal memory, I know the omap has a different architecture then the xscale (intel) cpu and can not be compared butt when I use the device in my car I want it to be able to playback mp3 and show navigation at the same time.
3) Is it possible to use skype? Because the minimum requirments of skype is based on 400mhz intel cpu, I don't know how much the omap scores on the intel mhz scale.
2) Is it possible to playback video, without dropping frames?
I have serious doubts about the performace of the 9100 for the things I want to use the device. Any comments from owners would be welcome.
Does anyone know if its possible to put wm5 on qtek2020i? I tought I had read that wm5 is universal and works on any pda, just a matter of drivers.

Game Compatability

I want to try out a few games on my XDA2. Any recommendations?
Also what about compatability. I haven't seen the XDA2 listed as working with anything yet, but I'm sure that's not the case. For example with Doom, there's the following builds listed:
Doom4CE for Casio E-100/105/500
Doom4CE for HP Jornada 820
Doom4CE for Casio E-115,125, EM-500, EG-800
download Doom4CE for Compaq iPaq
Which one should I be looking for? In general, what PocketPCs are software compatabile with my XDA2.
Cheers,
Phil.
ipaq since i'm not too sure that those others are made for the arm cpu which xda and ipaq share
I just tried the RaymanUltimate demo and that was the ARM version and it worked fine. A little confusing since the user manual has the XDA2 having an Intel XScale 400MHz CPU. Is the manual wrong or are the Intel and ARM CPUs compatable with each other?
I'll try the iPaq version of Doom as see if that works.
Cheers,
Phil.
well once there were a company who made small riss cpus called arm
then intel went and bougth them and after awhile they changed the name of the cpu line from intel strong arm (Mhz) to XScale
lucky for us they remained code compatible
sure it's pretty confusing
and i'm sure there are some programs which take advantage of newer instructions of the XScale which will not run on arm but all arm programs should run on the XScale
of cause not all pocketpc 2002 works on wm2003 but games are mostly made from pure cpu instructions and does not use the winCE API so they are ok most of the time (excluded quake2 pocketpc which only works on 2003)
well why not get quake1 and 2 they are more impressive then doom?
i have quake1 installed and it's running just fine havent gotten around to messing with quake2 yet because it takes up about 32MB :/
also had wolfenstein running ok
but imho then it's near to imposible to control when one is used to
the mouse and keyboard combo
maybe if the ati media chip in xda2 become popular games will be made for it and will not run on xda1 and we'll be in a place like pc's and videocards

XDA MINI pro - Skype-Will it real work. Skype min req 400mhz

According to Skype the Minimum spec for skype to work with a pocket PC is 400mhz.
So it makes my think. Will it realy work well if it does work? I mean skype on there website say :
in order to use Skype for Pocket PC, your handheld must meet the following minimum system requirements:
* Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC
* 400 MHz processor
* WiFi-enabled
The XDA Mini pro is :
- Operating system Pocket PC " OK "
- Main processor type Texas Instrument OMAP 850 processor " Mmm"
- Main processor speed 195 MHz " I Dont think so , Well below half speed"
- RAM 64 MB
Ect..
You know what am thinking. It make me think are they meaning to do this so they can sell, make money and then later get one out at the orignal or faster processor.
Any advise or better confermation of skype actually working on the mini Pro would clear my mind and i would not think twice about getting it.
If it works with the processor being a fast bus speed or core speed or something to then runs Skypeat a usable level, Am definatly getting one !!
what you think or shall we just wait a few more days for someone to actully try skype on it. " I think al wait"
Yes it works, see: http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/archive/2005/09/22/472831.aspx#473362
and
http://blogs.technet.com/windowsmobile4partners/archive/2005/09/24/411507.aspx
Thanks for the reply !!
According to the sites you have posed. i feel confident in buying one now, for skype !
even if not for skype. i would get one for sat nav and everything else.
Best all in one gadget i have came across!!!
Thanks again !

Skype on Prophet (818 Pro)

Does any try this?
The official Skype said it require min 312MHz CPU to run it.
Just wanna see is the performance on or not.

I overclocked my Dopod 818 pro to 276 Mhz and Skype works like magic without hassles
Cheers!
don't overclock for too long. The most feasible setting that is observed is 240MHz. Your battery wont die on your all at once and skype (low CPU) will work perfect
Be careful not to fry its motherboard!
Prophet and Skype
The only way to use skype on the prophet is too overclock...I have had success at above 216mhz
Recently I attempted Skype (at 228mhz) on the local GPRS/EGDE network ...I was able to dial/connect and receive the voice from the person I called but they were unable to hear my voice.
Anyone get Skype fully functional on a high speed network?

Skype rear speaker / headset
Has anyone figured out how to use skype 2.0 Low CPU with a BT headset, or at least via the regular telephone speaker?
Tom
use Skype Low CPU or HighCPU for Prophet?
hi guys,
WHich Skype version is recommended?
I tried the Low-CPU version since its meant for 312MHz PPC versions
But...I can barely hear the other party. The voice seems badly distorted.
I then switched to the High-CPU version and I can hear the other part lt least.
Anyone had similar experience as above?
Cheers

I was able to get the original Skype that came with my Jamin working. The program is installed on a Sandisk 2gb Ultra SD card and I overclocked the processor to 240mhz.
What is more interesting than Skype is a service called SIPDiscount http://www.sipdiscount.com/en/index.html . Go to that site and sign up for 10 euros, or you can use it free for 1 minute at a time to test it.
You can run the SIP service on a program called SJPhone for PPC http://www.sjlabs.com/sjp.html download the 2003SE version for pocket pc. They work great together and you can even call out to a US land line for free! No overclocking is neccessary because it is much lighter than Skype.
I've attached a text file that explains how to set up SJPhone to work with SIPDiscount. These directions work for the normal PC computer version of SJPhone also.
Have fun
P.S. You should always use a good headset with microphone for the best sound quality, without a headset there is usually an echo.
on my JAMin with SKYPE 2.00 Higher CPU one, the other person's sound comes out of the SPEAKER PHONE, is that normal or can I somehow switch to regular earpiece
I have a JAMin overclocked to 240, using Skype latest version low cpu, and over Wifi I have a decent, usable sound quality. I haven't tried it over Gprs/Edge.
Re: use Skype Low CPU or HighCPU for Prophet?
I was using Low-CPU (312MHz) version, I can hardly hear other party also. I will try to over-clock and see if it works or not. Or should we use High CPU version? Can anybody provide us the correct version and procedures in a more systematic way?

I don't overclock my S200, but it's running Skype perfectly. I've downloaded the latest 2.0.0.51 Skype version, installed and started without any problem. I made a voice chat with my friend via Wi-Fi network, he heard me and I heard him clearly.
It's just for people who want to buy Prophet but afraid about Skype not working.
Well, in my Qtek S200 i make a shortcut to overclock the cpu to 240Mhz and run Skype. When i exit skype the cpu clock becames 180Mhz.
I tested in a wifi connection without any problems. With GPRS i haven´t testet yet, but i think GPRS doesn´t have enough upstream to make Skype work properly.
This is my 50 cents!
Regards
GPRS no, Wifi yes
For the people trying Skype over GPRS, read the FAQ before blaming the OMAP processor.
http://support.skype.com/index.php?...base&_j=subcat&_i=12'>Skype+for+Pocket+PC</a>
"Skype for Pocket PC is designed to be used with a WiFi connection. If you are using Skype for Pocket PC with GPRS, you can use instant messaging but the bandwidth does not support calling functionality."
I have no problems with Skype low_cpu over Wifi.

Skype for ARM
Hi Guys
Well, first of all, I don't have the S200 yet, I'll get it today or on tuesday. I did some research before ordering it:
When it comes to Skype, there seems to be a lot confusion about how to run it smoothly. The problem seems to be, that Skype is compiled to run on an Intel Xscale processor. Well, as we all know, the S200 has an TI OMAP processor and that one has an ARM architecture. Search on Google a little bit, and you'll find out the differences. A TI OMAP 200MHz Processor is comparable to an Xscale 400-450MHz Processor only that the OMAP uses less power.
Naturally, ARM has a lower CPU frequency, but the benefit of it is, that it is multitasking. Xscale is a straight-forward processor, ARM does many things in parallel. This difference in architecture causes problems if one runs an Xscale Program on an ARM processor, because the program does not delegate the different tasks to the different units on the ARM, but only forwards them to the main ALU. That one, of course is overwhelmed, while the rest of the Processor doesn't know what to do.
Conclusion: Skype is for Xscale --> does not use the OMAP all the way and with all the available features (Sound ALU, WIFI ALU, ...)
What we need is a Skype that is made for the processor architecture of the S200
Search on Google and you'll find the following:
Skype for ARM
Of course it is an old version, I don't exactly know what has changed with skype, but as far as I know the protocol is still the same, so calling should not be a problem.
Anyways, I think I'll try the new Skype version first, and then the old one and will compare it.
You'll hear back from me, of cours I'll be happy if somebody else could try it as well and tell us what he or she experienced

MDA Overclocking - OmapClock vs. XCPUScalar?

Has anyone seen or noted any differences between Omapclock and XCPUSCalar for overclocking the MDA? Obviously XPCU is not free, but I'm curious if anyone has gotten better/different results between them. The newest version, 2.93, claims MDA support.
I just checked the website and it only works with the MDA Compact which is different than the MDA Vario.. so XCPUSCalar does not work with HTC Wizard devices..
MDA Vario is not using an XSCALE processor is it?
XCUScalar
We have no choice but to use Omapclock. Wizard uses TI OMAP processor !! not Intel Xscale.
I'm not arguing, but I'm confused why ARM apps run on the MDA them. Is it an emulation mode, whereas an overclocker has to be direct for the specific CPU?

The Texas Instruments OMAP & the Intel Xscale are both ARM based processors.
you are right but changing clock of processor requires cpu specific code. omap does not equal xscale! it is a complete different hardware structure (which is of course able to execute arm-code).
hope this explains why xcpuscalar does not work on omap cpu and why omapclock does not work on xscale cpu.

Cheers. I do realise that though. I was replying to the previous post asking why ARM apps in general can run on the MDA, by saying that the OMAP & Xscale are both ARM, therefore ARM apps can run on the MDA.
sorry for asking a dumb question but whats the advatange's of over clocking....my Vario runs at 195 tops and I've never seen it run slow....even after playing games and 6hours of mp3 music playing...
if you overclock the speed doesnt that mean the phone gets very hot and may cause internal damange to delicate chips etc?
:?:
If you don't have a problem with the device running slow, then I don't think you need to worry about overclocking.
I use my Wizard for all kinds of media and I find that overclocking it helps performance in that respect.
your lucky, most of us have to overclock to make the thing useable
must be the tmobile crap cos mine takes about 2 minutes to boot up as well :x
well my boot time takes ages cos of spb weather+today plug ins and windows media plug ins....but i can use my device and the only thing that slows it done with me noticing is active sync...
I brought this up.... because the latest XCPUScalar 2007 supports OMAP.
Wondering of anyone has tried it. If i'm not mistaken, i think it has a feature wherein it will step-up and step-down the proc based on load.
http://www.immiersoft.com/index.html
I am using XCPUScalar 3.0 and it is quite good. It is more user friendly than Omapscaler.
It can put cpu meters both on tray or taskbar, so you can see the current speed and tap to make changes.

Prophet/JAMin versus Atom

Hi,
Did a search and couldn't find exactly the question I have so here goes (also posted this in the Prophet section). I'm looking to buy a phone/PDA unit and am currently stuck between the Prophet/JAMin and the Atom.
Main uses will be standard PDA stuff, however I do a lot of 4WDing and will be installing Oziexplorer mapping software (for offroad use) and perhaps TomTom or Destinator for city/urban use.
I am leaning more towards the JAMin for its fullsize SD card slot (I have a few cards already available), however I am concerned about the speed of the unit when running mapping given its 200Mhz chip compared to the Atoms 416Mhz one.
Anyone out there able to shed some light on this and allay or confirm my concerns? Other than the chip speed and slot size, I don't really see much difference between the specs for the two that would impact me - I can live with either Bluetooth 1.2 oe 2.0 and tri-band will suit as much as quad-band, although the one thing I haven't seen on the spec sheets is that the Atom will playback music files in AAC format whereas the JAMin will. Can anyone confirm this?
