K-Jam Anti-Virus (wtf were they thinking) - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I don't understand why the wiz sometimes crawls to a halt, but I don't want to hard reset and have to set-up all the options again so I'm checking.

i dont see the point in it anyway considering there are next to no pda virus's and the AV software doesnt update its signitures so if anything DID come out that was malicious you wouldnt be protected.
odd

Well, I've gone ahead and restarted from scratch (hard reset) without the AV and some of the unneeded carrier settings.
I will report with my findings in 24 hours. I can't tell immediately because of the nature of the slow-downs on the Wizard, i.e. it works fine for hours and then starts freaking out.

For some reason , mine was never on my Jam from day one. It shows in the Extended ROM but never installed . When I installed manually it did instal . I think the reason why it stoped on install was because it aks to download the signitures from Imate ... and so stops the Instal

I removed the file foe av. hart reset. since then my k-kam uk model has run so smooth and fast that the speed on everything I do has improved. also installed pocket pc plus 3.0.1 and disabeled safe mode.'
compared to orignal slow refresh rate and speed. now it runs like it should.
thanks to the xda developers and contributers. . even skype now works faster and better.

well, I've been playing around with it for 3-4 hours now after removing the AV and I can NOT get it to slowdown to a crawl like it used to.
As hard as I find it to believe, it does seem like the antivirus (the geniuses at I-mate decided to include) is in fact what is causing the problems.
Sad thing is 99% of people who buy the device will never find out about this. Maybe i-mate will fix the problem though.
In any case, thanks for whoever figured it out! The way it's running now this is the best phone/pda I've ever owned.

is there an easy way to remove the anti-virus files from my KJam?

yes removed from extended rom and hard reset

Strange Stuff: Memory filling up!

This is weird... I'm running 4.00.11, no extraneous apps or anything third party. When I soft reset, program memory is at 17MB or 45% (which to begin with, sucks). As I use the XDA for a few days, I end up with almost 70% used!
Now, all the apps are truly closed, I even went as far as clearing the IE cache, keeping the SD card removed, etc. No matter what, it happens. And yes, I'm aware of the slider to adjust memory.
It wouldn't be so much a giant paint if it wasn't for the fact that after every few days I need to soft reset. Otherwise the thing just ends up slow and I can't open much in terms of apps.
Is this normal, ie. "what do you expect from Microsoft"? Should I cry? Smash it? Fix it?
Thanks in advance for any insight.
4.00.11 is garbage version with full of bugs!
People experienced WM2003 ROM, most decided to back with Pocket PC 2002 (3.20).
When you cooked your rom, did you make sure that "fix multiple resets" was ticked, I think its to do with logging and debugging stuff taking room and making the system crawl after a while. Worth looking anyway.
lol... bro! you're complaining about reseting every few days?!?
i reset 10-30 times a day!!!! lol
most programs freeze on this $400 piece of s*ht. just like everything else Bill G8s does.
good luck! maybe when Apple make a MACpda
im on 4.00.11 and i have no problems even d/c gprs after browing on wap.
you just hold down the red button till it d.c then you let go and your phone part is still left on
ive had no probs with v4.00.11 best version out for the uk
gaz
No going back!
That's the trouble with all this buggy software... it's got too many features I've been enjoying to go back to the more archane previous (WM 2002) version.
I did select the multiple resets bug fix thing when cooking the ROM. I'm assuming it's just like when using most versions of Windows on a PC, it just craps up if you don't reboot every so often.
As much as I like a lot of Microsoft products (bugs or not, whining and otherwise, it's the most standardized functional platform out there), this thing is frustrating, would be a great product if not for the memory issue.

Hmmmm, I've been running for weeks now on 4.00.16. No crashes and no resets and no problems. Running lots of extra software too. Maybe you have something installed wrong or a bad rom...
Misterdollymaker
me too
I also have 4.00.11, and I also have this problem with the memory filling up. No other problems however, the 4.00.11 version is very stable on my O2 XDA. A reset every few days fixes the problem. I'll stick with this version, too many improvements compared to PPCPE2002.
yeah I'll 2nd siliconaddicts opinion here...
same issues
that may be true... but some of my best games only work on 2002
the sound is very poor, and choppy at best, in 2003.
how do u get mms/wap to work in usa? or is that just euro thing.
games dont work? which ones?
I cant say I've experienced that with mine....
well... i think of only a couple now,
bust'em arcade
and Strip 4 You, by AIM arcade.
oh! and ALIEN INVASION by www.kyouwan.com
so, 4.0016 doesn't leak memory?
Is there anybody else out there, running 4.00.16 without the strange memory leak?
If so, maybe it's time to upgrade once again... just waiting for the day that one of these ROM upgrades completely fry my XDA.
Are you using surfing with PIE?
I know on my other PPC's with WM2003, that PIE will cache a large temp directory(s) and every so often I go in and tell PIE to delete them out under the Tools->Options->General Tab->"Delete Files" Button
To get an idea look in
\\Windows\Profiles\guest\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\
Directories here can build up and eat A LOT of memory - 5-10 MB easy.

really really dodgey xda exec

Sorry if guys are tired of these threads about the dodgey operations of the xda exec, but mine really got to me tonight.
I only had 3 software installed on mine, pocket informant rev 3, spb diary, spb pocket plus. It was running ok with these 3 software, abit slower than i expected but ok. However i never thought it was totally stable, sometimes it would jus freeze, it would happen to me quite a few times a day, and as mentioned by some other users, it would take around 3 or 4 soft resets to get it back up. I have ordered a replacement from o2 and they said they going to send one but it might take a while as there is none in stock!
I thought id play around with this one for abit, try and get the most efficient set up going so i could do it on my new one. I read a post about Lakeridge WisBar advance and thought id give it a try. I installed and then it froze, i thought a soft reset would fix, but no, i must have tried to soft reset it over 15 times and the cloest i got to the today screen was the sim card pin screen which was half covered by the o2 boot screen so i couldnt even enter the pin. Then i thought o well going to have to do a hard reset, so i tried it and it didnt work, i did the hard reset and it froze at the o2 boot screen. I did it again and it did work. But how dodgy is this pda man!
Install it in Corporate mode and just install needed cabs only, especially the one with connection. Use if for a few days to see if the problems persist, the crap 02 interface may well be one of the main problems.
Mine works fine, this is a great device but also need a lot of tweaks to work well, if you want a good "out of the box" experience then this isn't the kind of phone for you.
BTW, don't install Pocket Plus, it will slow down your Exec as hell.
As above but consider not using the Spb software.
It caused all sorts of memory leaks/crashing on mine over the course of about 3 days of testing.
In addition it also rather annoyingly consistently failed to work right when the phone was resumed after a long delay ie over night.
My dopod 900 running perfectly well and fast even with 5 programs on the background. Guess the way WM5.0 handle the memory usage is different than previous OS did.
Spb pocket plus really slow down my machine, now i'm using my without any task closing utility at all and it runs smoothly.
h,im using dopod 900 for only less then a week.i really find this dopod 900 are much more stable than all xda PDA.
i tot its gonna be the same like xda which always hang or Jam,amazing it work so well.
Dopod900 definitely run way stable compare to Exec or I-mate. I didn't quite face the same problem they mentioned here. Guess O2 and I-mate has mess up their rom after the customization. The other reason could be that Dopod is directly link to HTC so they have the access to the deepest on the programming on this machine.
yep... SPB Pocket Plus causes crashes... :x
Just tried to install the SPB pocket plus 3 on my xda Exec, and after quite a few failed installation attempts -- I should have stopped there -- where for the first time in over a month (when attempting to instasll new s/w) the installation consistently failed. I took a break and decided to have one last go.
This time it did work. During the installation it warned me about installing it on the Storage card: that the card driver has to be initialysed prior to activation of the prog.
The installation finished.
Well after that I tried to open the prog... it didn't work, and the device wasn't responding.
My next step was a soft reset, but it halted in mid-process.
There followed a few attempts again of soft reseting the device - but it kept halting at the same stage...
So for the first time - after testing my device for over a month with many programs - I needed to do a Hard reset :!: :x
This is really annoying! I have read before that SPB is slightly problematic and slows the device down... to put it mildly - I am NOT impressed :!: :!: :!:
I saw on another thread about Pocket Hack Master for overclocking the Universal. You might want to give it a try.
I also tried SPB Pocket plus, but was dismayed by how slow it made my EXEC. I deleted it off in less than a minute.
jus recieved my new xda exec from o2 this morning. Installed corporate settings and keeping all 3rd party apps off for the mo and see how it runs. Will keep you guys posted.

Device.exe process using 100% cpu slowing everything down to a crawl

Hi everyone, I'm new here, couple of weeks ago if you'd asked me what a prophet was, I'd I've talked about religion. I was given a hand-me-down imate jamin that i"m trying to get working properly.
The prophet in question was previously working properly without any issues, the previous owner had just gotten a new battery for it when the issues started. The phone slowed down to a crawl, nothing could get done with it, takes like 1 min to open a text msg, around 10sec to answer a phone call. Having gotten it and thinking its a firmware problem, I did a hard reset, nothing, then I upgraded the firmware to the latest JAMin_WWE_213923_2139123_022021_ship.zip again, nothing!
Funnily enough, this behaviour is erratic, do a soft reset, load sktools and the cpu usage app reports that all is fine, give it some time then ka-boom! the cpu usage gets maxed out by device.exe seemingly for no reason.
Anyone here ever seen behaviour like this? If you have or just have a suggestion on what I can try, please post. I'm not sure what to do now since I'm on the latest firmware and I don't know where I can get a rom for wm6 for the phrophet. I"m hoping upgrading to wm6 will fix this issue.
Thanks in advance.
John.

Same problem with my HCT Diamond.
Dia Duit Rom.
Trying to find a solution!
Firmware
You could try a cooked rom, but make sure you perform a hard SPL first as this will save your prophet from bricking.
The other thing is have you tried a different battery as a bad battery can seriously affect the phones performance espcially if it is a cheap copy.
If your'e worried about flashing have a deep read of the following link
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Prophet
Hope this helps
Sorry mate, just seen your reply.
The phone eventually died, won't charge, nothing doing, looks like its bricked. I moved to a Kaiser, which then started having 3g problems, though I got a temporary fix by keeping it on 2g.
Now I have a mytouch which needs unlocking. I think me and htc should part ways, I'm yet to have a simple good time with any of their products.
As regards the prophet... is there a way I can resuscitate it? It wont' charge, no light shows either on usb or charging from a normal charger.
Thanks
John
It's not like that. HTC phones work good as long as you keep them good. I'm not saying you didn't keep it good but maybe some softwares ruined your Pocket PC. ANytime this happens, a hard reset and revert from backup should solve most of your problems.
Looking at your Prophet, smells like the battery is dead? Try changing and see if that helps.
Regards,
Carty..
This looks like a day that is going to be special. This phone has been in my drawer over a year now, I'd given up on it long ago. Well I stripped one of my old chargers down to the wire, charged the battery manually for a few mins and presto the phone has come on.
It's still slow as hell, so I see device.exe is still hogging cpu.
Time to review the prophet roms, been a while since I checked on it.
happens the same to me too
for me this issue rises up when i connect with my pc :S
due to the calnot or calpd or poutlook or someother exe ... it streches the cpu usage to a 100%
some ppl say that having the correct time zone helps u out in both, the pc and ppc solves the issue ... well i have windows 7 (UTC) and in ppc (GMT ... using http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=401161 ) does it make any difference ?
now the only option i got is to either hard reset although this happened with my previous ROM too :S

HTC TD2 freeze problem since WM6.5 upgrade

Since upgrading my TD2 to the official WM6.5 ROM issued by HTC I have had problems with the handset freezing; the only remedy has been to remove the battery and switch back on. At first I thought it was a hardware fault but a friend's phone has also started doing the same since he upgraded. This never happened previously and only happens every ten days or so.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
I'm having the same problems mate. My TD2 on 6.5 freezes spoaradically - I'd say at least twice a week, and the only solution is to remove the battery.
I've been trying to link the freeze with a particular program or app but the phone has frozen at varying times and in many cases whilst no apps are running!
I'm waiting for upgrade on my contract as I've had it with this TD2 and especially WinMo. I mean, how can WinMo store all saved words in SMS on RAM only for it to be wiped after every restart/soft reset?! Why? Argh!
I'm going for the Hero next, and see how nice Android plays!
Good luck with your query...

Does it do this without the mem card installed?
Exactly the same is happening here and the same on my friend's TD2. We have never tried WM 6.1, the first step after purchasing the phone was to upgrade to stock WM 6.5 ROM.
I tried to disable the weather animation on home screen but this doesn't help. My friend has disabled HTC sense and his phone has not frozen after one week. We will have to wait another week or two to proof that this could be the solution.
I hope that Touch Flo is not the cause of this malfunction because WM6.5 UI is very ugly.
I don’t know if the mem card could cause this issue but using the phone without mem card is simply not an option for me. The phone memory is too limited.
My friend also raises this issue on HTC support but so far HTC is ignoring the problem. The only bright word from HTC support was that they will investigate this issue (after many words on how to flash, reflash and hard reset ...).
I really hope that the solution for this very inconvenience will be find out soon.
My TD2 also freezes often compared to Win 6.1 where it almost never froze. I also hope that HTC will make some kind of service pack for Win 6.5 as it doesn't work that well at the moment.

I'm not suggesting that anyone uses the device without a mem card! You are missing my point.
Phones that freeze do so for a reason and it's necessary to eliminate possible causes.
Some two years ago I did extensive testing on this subject when the same issues arose around another make and model of phone.
One thing I found is that it is possible to induce instability of handsets when mem cards are used (abused?) in certain ways.
My TD2 used to freeze when I first got it and it has also done so with a number of cooked ROMs. With my current ROM it never freezes and there are no instability issues.
I strongly suspect poor coding of apps and lack of thorough beta testing. Isn't it strange how some apps have been around for years and you can rely on their worth?
Installing to mem card causes issues as well as cards that have installed apps being reused after cooked ROM flashing and previous settings and fat tables being left on the card.
Also when power is low mem cards draw large currents that the battery may not be able to give. They are very power hungry. I took this up with Sandisk Tech Dept and they politely told me that the info on current draw under stress (usage) was not for public access!
So my answer is keep your ROM light (no manila or after market 'front end'), minimise card usage by installing all you can to phone mem, reformat afresh with every ROM flash and keep your battery as highly charged as possible at all times.
Some say 'yes but I do all those things and I never get freezes'. That's fine but no help to those that do.
There really is only one way to find out and that is to take a little time and try it for yourself.
Large address book combined with bad 3rd party program
On my Tilt2 I found that applications like Fring could freeze the phone. After a few tries, I decided not intall that anymore (and Fring might have fixed it by now, but I can't afford to try, because uninstalling required a hard reset).
The phone originally came with HTC TouchFLO, but I switched that off, since it just made everything more difficult to reach. And sometimes the fhone became unresponsive, slow or totally frooze. After I disabled it by using the Windows Today (6.5 or classic) after which I only had about 2 freezes in 1.5 year.
Now I finally upgraded to the latest official ROM for the phone, which has HTC Sense on it. After everybody saying how great Sense was, I gave it a try. It worked reasonably, until I started playing with the Favorites in the Peoples tab. After each new addition (I tried 3) I had to restart the phone, and after restart it still hung up.
I happen to have a quite large address book that I synchronize with ActiveSync. I think I'm starting to see a pattern, where several applications - Fring, Sense, etc - just cannot handle large address books.
By the way, to disable Sense, first switch to the Windows Default (= WinMo 6.5) Today screen, and do a soft reset to get rid of Sense background processes. If you want to use the WinMo classic Today screen, then you can do that after the reset. Directly trying to move from Sense to WinMo classic resulted in another freeze. After disabling Sense, I haven't experienced a freeze, (yet !!!).
^^Try a custom rom,Sense works fine on those as the ROM is highly modified with few errors now.

[Q] Maps problem - software or hardware?

Hello all,
I have tried searching this forum and have found various similar threads but none quite the same.
I used to use the gps on my hd2 quite a lot, both in windows mobile running copilot, and in android with google maps. But recently, I can no longer use it. If i open google maps or navigation i will get anywhere between 2 seconds and 2 minutes and then the phone will freeze completely, even if i dont use anything just having the program running is enough. I installed gvSIG mini maps and that does not work well either, it either freezes or simply never returns any search results.
The thing that is making me feel it is possibly hardware related is that it worked perfectly for a long time, the phone is about 18 months old now. I have tried various roms (the one i am using just now is Android 2.3.4 - HyperDroid-CM7-v2.1.0-HeadyHoneybadger) and it makes no difference; with the exception of the gps/maps the phone is very stable and I am perfectly happy with it. I have tried using setcpu to lower the processor speed in case this was being caused by heat, but no difference. I am considernig reinstalling a Windows Mobile build and testing the gps from there.
Any thoughts?
Regards
Stuart
quite probably just an android issue, go back to winmo6.5 and see if it does it then, if it does hardware if it doesnt you know its android
I would agree with what Richy99 said to go back to Windows 6.5 and check. I am currently on the same Pongster build you are on and do not experience any freezing of the phone you describe. In fact, I am using an optimized gps.conf file for my area and get locks in 2-20 seconds from a cold start now and used the gps navigation for hours while traveling without issues. I suspect it is something hardware related.
Thanks for the responses.
So, I reinstalled Windows Mobile 6.5 downloaded from the HTC website. Clean install, opened google maps, seemed ok for a few minutes, then i went into the menu and ticked 'Use GPS', then it worked maybe a minute and froze up completely and the phone restarted. tried this about half a dozen times got maximum a minute use each time.
Given that the phone is always pretty stable except when trying to use gps/maps, I would guess that the hardware fault lies in that part of the phone. How long as HTC warranties? The phone is 16 months old now so it doesnt look good but never mine
Will contact HTC on the off chance anyway!
Cheers
Stuart
Small update, contacted O2 and they gave me a freepost address to send it back to for repair (a company called A NOVO i think it was), about a week later I got it back, they enclosed a letter saying that they have replaced the main circuit board inside the phone. So, same old case, scratches and all, but its like a new phone, new IMEI number and everything, normal service resumed! Full marks to O2 customer service and the repair company.

prob 70-80% of HD2 Android users getting this freeze problem.
this is reply i just sent to another thread....:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088693&page=3
Well, I been having the freeze issues with namd forever, with every build, every sd card etc....especially if i turn gps or data on or both.
So, for last 36 hours, i thought i'd do a lil simple test.
Downloaded win mobile stock ROM......36 hours stressing the heck outta my phone, toggling everything on and off etc. guess what...NO FREEZE.
So, in my opinion, 100% NOT hardware, definitely Android hd2 related.
