Wizard Memory Management and slow-down over time. - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

Hi guys,
I got my wizard a couple of days ago, and was initially pleased by how snappy it was compared to my magician.
Since then, I've noticed that my wizard progressively slows down through the day. Initially I thought, no big deal, I'll just stop all running programs and it should speed up again. When I do this though, the amount of Free Program space does not increase by much. After a reset, I usually have 30-35MB free. and after a day's use, I'm down to 3MB. When I stop all programs it only goes back up to 5-6MB! It's like there is a memory leak or something.
I also got a "low memory" pop-up at one time, which gave me a list of applications I could close. That list had a lot more items than the list of running programs in the Setting Menu! There were also multiple instances of some processes, such as 'Phone'.
Anyone know what is going on?
Thanks

Aren't these applications only for WM 2003? it says on their website that these applications are not needed in WM 2003 SE.

Those programs fix a problem in WM 2003. They are not anymore necessary in WM2003 SE and of course on WM2005, as the problem has been fixed by Microsoft.
The slowdown problem is elsewhere...

Memory leak?
It may be that one of your programs is leaking memory (due to poor design or to incompetability to WM5).
I suggest to run a binary search elimenation:
First run the Wizard for a full day without any 3rd party programs.
The next day add several program and run full day again.
And so on, until you may find a program that causes the leakage.
If one of these program resposable, you'll find it that way.
Good luck :-((((
And report back since this is interesting for the rest of the Wizard-to-be users.

I had this program from Scarybear running on my previous HP4150, so I know what you are talking about.
When I moved to the Jam (with WM2003SE) it became useless, as there were no duplicate notifications anymore. This is confirmed also by the excellent SKTools.
I do not have a K-Jam yet, but your theory that this bug has come back in WM2005 after it was fixed on 2003SE, sounds a bit difficult to believe...

I confirm.
This is the come back of the famous bug.
For me I get multiple lines of
\windows\sddaemon.exe
I am not sure what it does exactly but I know that if I don't clean it regularly I have many problems (like the phone soft reseting alone!!!).
If I keep it clean with scarybear soft then no more trouble.
They probably didn't take the latest windows mobile 2003 version to start building windows mobile 5.
I didn't see many posts on this.
We should give it some ups so that it will be fixed in a future rom upgrade.
Come on all the people complaining about this phone check if you do not have duplicates. Just in case...

verified. I have multiple run instances for various apps after a day of use. according to this there's more than 4 instances of clock, calendar, ssdaemon, replog etc etc. pretty much just the apps that I've launched multiple times then later shut down.

I had 28 ssdaemon duplicates on my kjam

did you have stability problems or slowdowns with 28 sddaemons?

how i can discovered its?¿?
regards

I guess the other question I have is that why there's zero notification showing from MemMaid?

with Check Notifications i detect 256 events, and many repeat, but i can´t deleted

Or zero duplicate notifications from SKTools??? I had 114 events with about 78 of them repeated sddaemons with Clear Notifications.
Thanks for the hint about this.

imposible sincronize after install check notifications and clear all the notifications... it´s imposible
anyone more...

sddaemon is in the start up folder in windows . I believe it is linked to the Voice software on the device.

That's correct.

I ended up deleting sddaemon.exe out completely with clear notifications and it doesn't return. Or pull it from the rom before you hard reset. I use voicecommand anyway.
...however, I have some good news. I just saved a bunch of cpu cycles by running clear notifications...
-mix

I removed sddaemon from startup as well. Voicedialing still works though, so what does sddaemon really do?

Your problem of running slow is probably due to a MS Mobile 2003 bug My I-mate was running really slow.
Download this freeware (both of them), install them and run them. I had over 500 entries in the database which I cleared with the util and it went to 9 The speed of my Imate returned to normal.

Thanx drj bro! I had 830!!! Down to 11 after running app. My XDAII is running real smooth now. The second app says its only trial though....
Your welcome...glad it worked!
It will build up over time and as you soft reset. Just run the util every once and a while and all should be well.

Thanks from me too! I had my alarms fail, which made me oversleep, which could have been very embarrassing on any other night as the bands I drive rely on me getting them to the next gig on time.
I installed this freeware which seems to have (a) cleared a lot of unwanted dross & (b) sorted out my alarm problem (I think!)
I also use the very useful pocket alarm from Burr Oak Software, check it out here:-

New XDA Mini S - Too slow to use ...even in 'Corporate Mode'

Hello
I have just purchased a new XDA Mini S - to replace my dying XDA II (which was giving me electrical shocks and starting to lose data).
Ash (an extremely knowledgeable and helpful O2 shop assistant in Uxbridge) directed me to this site so I could get the details required to to set-up and run my new PDA in Corporate mode.
After set-up was completed, I synchronised the Mini with my work computer (via Activesynch 4.1) - allowing me to download my calender, task and contact items.
And that's it so far!! ...no other memory-intensive applications installed, ...no massive ringtone files, ...nothing!!
However, the unit is running very slow in comparison to my old XDA II. When I am working in the Calender application and go forward several weeks, followed by selecting the 'return to today' icon, it takes about 10 seconds to react. Similar behaviour exists in 'Tasks', when returning to the 'Today screen', and when using the menus - so, basically, all of the time. My previous unit reacted instantly - and that was fully loaded with software.
What can I do? I love the new Mini and the upgraded spec it offers - but is is unworkable - as described above.
If I invested in a mini-SD card could I utilise the additional space as program memory rather than storage?
Hopefully somebody can help. I am reasonably I.T. savvy - but only as a user and not much experience at progrommer / developer level - so basic intructions my be needed!!
Thanks in advance
Gary
I think my previous message was too long...
Basically, how can i speed up my XDA Mini S which is already running in Corporate Mode?
Thanks
Gary
Soft-reset once a day? My Vario runs acceptably quickly after a soft-reset, but slows down over time.
Hi Zathras
Thanks for the tip...
...but I have been 'soft-resetting' several times per day - and it doesn't seem to help.
I do have several years of appointments in my diary. Would reducing this to only 2 weeks of history help?
Thanks
Gary
Hi Gary,
I had a Magician before and also feel the 02 mini s (Wizard) is way slower.
I have read elsewhere that the Wizard has a silly anti-virus program that always runs in memory and will chew up memory.
The boards indicate that to use a different extended rom. The only problem is I cannot get a view on which portions of the o2 Rom should be deleted and which should be kept.
Let me know if you find a way.
Thanks
Adrian
I have noticed a few times after running active snc on my mini s it slows right down till i soft reset.
could it be the same problem?
Hi Adrian
Thanks for your help...
I'm not a programmer / developer - so wouldn't know where to start with ROM edits, etc...
Knowing my luck I would probably do something unrecoverable!!
Is there an easy way to do this? Is it done in the Wizard directly - or via the PC?
...and is it a file that's viewable in explorer?
Excuse my basic approach to all of this. Maybe there is a tutorial somewhere on the boards...
Thanks
Gary
does it slow down after active sync has run ?
Goto to settings memory and make sure all your programs are shut down especially activesync as this seems to slow it down more than anything. Also download check notifications and remove any entries in red that have probably appeared especially if you have been soft resetting several times per day.
You really should see a speed increase if you complete the above. Activesync really does slow your wizard down and more than a few duplicate entries found and removed with check notifications will really help.
See if that helps.
It seems to be the same before and after activesynch!!!
I closed down all running programs and the Calendar is still dead slow...
How do you 'download check notications'?
Thanks again
Gary

Do I need to install both 'Check Notifications' and 'Notification Clearfix'.
I am correct in presuming that 'Notification Clearfix' prevents future duplications whereas 'Check Notifications' lets you see all events, whether or not thet are offending?
Gary
try tweaks 2k2 there are some reg hack that help with peformance
I've installed the one that runs at startup, but it only helps clean up the list at startup - not after startup; so if you add alarms/etc., the list can get mucky again. So I've also got it under an icon to run from time to time Need to find a nice scheduling application that can run other applications - just have it run every 8 hours or so
Try some other apps apart from your calendar, it could be that there is just too much info in there. You may just find its not as speedy as your last device, but thats just the way it is. Its a trade off and maybe if the speed is a big issue the wizard isnt for you.
I heard a lot of people saying the wizard is slow before I bought one, but I found its speed fine for what I expect from the device. I find my uni much quicker, but again its that trade off, my uni is much bigger.
The wizard needs to be loved for what it is not for what you want it to be.
I'm trying to love it - believe me !!!
...it is only the speed of the calendar searches that really annoys me - I can cope with the sluggish moments.
And I have just discovered something... when you cross one month to the next, the calendar freezes
If someone can do the following for me - it will verify whether it is specifically my unit that is at fault.
Open Calendar, switch to 'Agenda View', and then, using the directional keypad, arrow right until you cross over one month - say January to February. Does the calendar stop working?
When it rcovers, hit the 'go to today' icon. What happens?
I think there is a bug!!
Gary
Got the mini s ab out a month ago from O2 shop. I just did a hard reset and didn't install any of the O2 crap. Is running quite fast and everything just seems fine. I have tried what you said on the calendar. I don't have any problem. The calendar program just keep running without stopping or anything. After I close the calendar, I pressed on the 'Today' button and everything seems fine.
Thanks for trying for me - I appreciate it...
I just need to find a solution that works for me.
I already have the most basic install possible - corporate mode - so wonder if there are any more avenues to go down...
Cheers for now

Just tried this on my Charmer in case it was a WM5 bug and I can't replicate it - all works fine.
Try doing a hard reset, and then just when the little box comes up saying something like 'customising in 3 seconds' quickly press the soft-reset button.
Voila! - basic WM5 with no more o2 crap installed! You'll have to set up the gprs and mms yourself, but if you phone cust. sevices then they can e-mail you the instructions...
It should run faster than before.

Windows Mobile 5 and Magician - Why

Since this has always been a "hot topic" on this forum, I have a simple question for all you Magician users.
What are the top 3 reasons you want it / don't want it for Magician.
Here's mine to start you off:
1. I don't want to be left behind
2. New Mobile 5 looks better
3. I want to be able to use charts in Pocket Excel
Let's avoid the WM5 upgrade saga again. We know we won't get an upgrade for Magician. Well, not until May at any rate. (!)
OK - Here's my why not:
1. WM2003SE is stable
2. It already does what I want
3. I can wait till I'm due for an upgrade from my network.
No WM5,
1. 2003 is stable
2. the screen is too small for specials
3. I can wait for a new provider offer (WM5 should be stable by then)
Why not WM5:
1. It's a lot slower, especially at starting programs
2. Not all software is yet WM5 compatible.
3. You have to buy the latest versions of many of your software to have it WM5 compatible. Most updates are not for free.
4. The Magician just doesn't have enough ROM to run WM5 properly
I can't think of any compelling reasons to switch to WM5 that are of a positive significance (btw, I can't count to 3):
-CF 2 works on both.
-Security signing is a pain in the bottom.
-It's slower.
-Ok it has some useful networking functions, but it loses wifi Activesyncing. WTF? Not to mention ActiveSync.
-WM5 interface, perhaps the most potentially useful idea with the softkeys, but inconsistent execution. And I have some ideas about bringing some of the benefits to Wm2003.
-I have the Magician and the Universal. I was just telling my better half about the Universal users' experience with dropping phone calls being able to answer. It's a beautiful device, but once again, what were they on?
Ok, too many others, I'm starting to http://www.ladyofthecake.com/mel/space/images/alien.jpg]sweat and convulse[/url]. Better stop for now.
V
With a device like the Magician where the size is more phone-ish than pda-ish, I'd be inclined to say that most people use it primarily is a mobile phone with the additional functionality of a PDA, MP3 player, etc.
I upgraded to the HTC Prophet just because I want to have the latest. But now that I had it for over 2 to 3 weeks I can say that I would never switch back to WM2003. Single-handed operation with WM5 is very easy, intuitive and practical to say the least.
And when the battery is really low, like less than 30%, I feel safer listenening to the last few MP3s, knowing that I will not lose anything when the battery goes flat.
With regards to performance, I find it suprising how people find loading prorams on Wm5 noticeably slower than WM2003. I was using my old magician yesterday and the performance is just about the same. Th onlt thing I found slower on WM5 is changing the SIP.
Plus, WM5 can do without 3rd party programs like Caller Id, Photo Contacts, etc. cause they are all integrated with the OS. For example, there were times when a picture that I assign to a contact won't show up during a call with the Magician. This never happened to me since I started using WM5. And since contact pictures are synchronised with Outlook I don't need to re-assign them again after a hard-reset.
Finally regarding stability, yes there is software that is not compatible with WM5 yet, but most of the best software is already compatible. I'm using the following software and never had to reset my PPC:
SPB Diary
Resco File Exporer 5
psShutXp
Hitchhiker
MDict
TKCreator
MS Voice Command
and a couple of games
Personally, I think it's quite a stable platform. The only thing that annoys me is that sometimes Wm5 (or the Prophet) loses the storage card after being on standby, and the media stored on it is not always immediately available. You'd have to wait those 3 sec sometimes. But this will hopefully be fixed in the next ROM update. If not, I'm still happy with the overall package
Just my 2cents!
Meh.
Hokay. Regarding WM5... I have never come across an OS that actually requires a file that YOU OWN signed by an EXTERNAL AUTHORITY instead of yourself, and that purposefully ignoring this warning to install said files doesn't necessarily mean it won't be blocked when you try to run it (goodbye backward compat). I thought this technology was strictly for web only.
Stick to WM2003, at least it has the decency to trust its own owner. -.-'

I dont understand - what situation is this coming up?
Well, I have some games on my O2 Xda mini. I tried transferring them to my sister's new Atom.
Message I got from installing was the generic 'this program is not signed by a trusted source'. I ignored it and installed anyway.
But when I tried to run it, guess what? 'Program cannot be run because it is either not signed with a trusted certificate or some files are missing. Please reinstall...'. This was from an installer works perfectly on my Mini.
Did some research, Win Mobile 5.0 will also generate this error when you attempt to execute something with a DOS parameter at the back. It also blocks stuff that do not require installation; Scummvm 8.0 was halted with the same error message. I know the latest Windows OS's have File Execution Prevention but it was never as anal and obnoxious as to go 'I do not want to let it run. So there. Nyah.'

When I was using the I-Mate Jam (Magician) I really liked the "Photo Contacts" program they had, which was actually "Caller ID 1.6" allegedly from IA Styles of late. But it cannot seem to be found anywhere. I have looked from freeware sites to pirate sites and cannot find it. I downloaded and used "Photo Contacts 4.1" for a pretty penny, but it did not allow for animated .gif contact images. I REALLY liked that. Does anyone know where this program can be found? Can any of you remove and distribute it from your phone or from a ROM?

Why don't you download it from the xdadevs FTP server? There are the ExtRoms for Magician with the cab files.
But be careful, you seem to run a WM5 device, it might not run (and force you to hard reset)
Actually WM6
In reality I have upgraded my system to WM6 Pro now and I will let you all know how loading this cab on my Hermes does with WM6. I loved this program when it was running on my Magician (which I gave away to my friend/biz partner) and have tried Photo Contacts Pro 4.yada.yada, and was not happy with THAT. Even got a refund.
Thanks a bunch Dude
Only took a minute
I found it right where you said I would and downloaded it and installed it and soft reset and . . . when I tried to asign a photo it got a headache and gave me a message about being unable to use the program for somereason.
I unistalled it from the system and did another soft reset and while I don't have menu access to assign photos, I can open the edit screen on a contact and assign a photo there.
Maybe I should reload the program again and try accessing it from the Edit screen too? We shall see.
Otherwise, I think I shall attempt installing it on my wife's Blue Angel.

Greatest 'Photo Contacts' ever
I installed the photo contacts on my wifes Blue Angel - WM2003 - and it was excellent - I only wish someone could make the same program work on my Hermes with WM6. It has the unique ability to use animated .gif images and I LOVE THAT!!!
If anyone could pull this one off I would be overjoyed. I have attached the version with which I am familiar. And if you can't make it work for WM6 - or WM5 - it already works on WM2003 really well. I have loaded it on a couple of Wallabies, a Magician with a new ROM and a Blue Angel - all with great joy in its application.
TIA,

Athena Running Slow Sometimes!

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this anomoly. Sometimes my unit seems to run extremely slow...like several processes are running in the background and hogging all the resources. I make sure that all "Running Programs" are closed and it is not during a "checking email" cycle, my internet history and cookies are cleared too. Sometimes I can click on something and wait up to 20 seconds before the "wheel" stops rotating and it completes the requested task. When this happens, it is 2-3 times slower than my HTC Touch.
Then, there are other times when everything seems to be running fine. Everything is quick and responsive with no noticable delays.
Background: My unit is the European X7500 version with WinMo 6 installed by the "selling store". The only additional programs I have installed are AvantGo, Google Maps, SPB GRPS Monitor, Skype, Sprite Backup and Vito Audio Notes. All were "clean installs" with no error messages and if memory serves correctly, I was noticing symptoms of these issues prior to installing most of these programs. I currently have 81.60 MB storage memory available and 76.90 MB program memory available.
ROM Version: 2.21.405.2
ROM Date: 07/20/07
Radio Version: 1.50.00.00
Protocol Version: 32.83.7020.20H
ExtROM Version: 2.21.405.101
It seems that there is something at work here but I can't seem to put my finger on what is causing it. Is it possible the the installation of WinMo 6 has something to do with this problem?
Although I am a long-time Windows PDA user, I have no experience at upgrading OS's, ROM's or hacking the registry entries (or even reading them for that matter). Any assistance in isolating the cause of this frustrating problem would be greatly appreciated.
Download latest rom!
Hey thats cool, I also have an HTC Advantage and an HTC Touch!
Anyway, I would recommend that you download and install the latest WM6 rom from the HTC e-club site, then install all your programs on the Micro drive. You can also try defragmenting the drive using Pocket Mechanic or similar utillity!
Good luck!
Thanks for the tip branko but from what I understand, I already have the most up-to-date version of WM6 (listed in OP). Also, I do not have a lot of programs installed (6) and half of these are installed on the MD. Defrag doesn't make sense as it is only a couple of months old with very little added and nothing removed.
That's why I am leaning towards something that may not have gone completely "tickety boo" during the installation of WM6. I am just trying to figure out if anyone else has experienced this problem after upgrading before I try a complete re-install of the OS. I was hoping that there is some way to be able to look for whatever is causing this slowdown. Kind of like using Task Manager in XP to see what processes, if any, are running in the background.
GPRS monitor has been known to cause slowness. Try Hard reset and not install GPRS monitor and see if that helps. When I got my X7500, it had GPRS monitor on the CD and I installed it and I had the same issues. Uninstalling the GPRS did not help, I had to Hard reset and then load my apps and not load the GPRS monitor.
I know is sucks to hard reset and have to reload your apps, but since you only have a few, it is worth a try.
Good luck
Thanks eagle 1. That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Too bad if that is the problem because I kind of like the GPRS Monitor. And the funny thing is, I am also running GPRS Monitor on my HTC Touch without problems and 1/3 the processor speed.
I just checked the versions and my Advantage has 2.4.5 build 923 (from original CD) and my Touch has 2.5.1 build 225 (download purchase). So, I wonder if the older version has issues with WM6 and the newer version has fixed those issues.
Well, there is only one way to find out for sure. I will try a hard reset tomorrow when I get some time (too tired tonight) and report back. If I find that this has corrected the issue, I may try loading the newer version and see what happens.
Thanks again.

eagle1,
You've just posted the tip of the day! I've always noticed that my taskbar icon took a long time to change from 3G to H, but never occurred to me that the GPRS monitor was the culprit. After uninstalling it,I already noticed a marked reduction in time taken to change from 3G to H, and my web browsing speed has improved! I'm going to try a hard reset when I got some free time later and see if it improves even further.
Just a question before I "pull the pin" and do a hard reset. I noticed that in the Remove Programs listing it shows Microsoft Office Mobile. A hard reset will not uninstall this, will it?
Also, under the Programs directory, Adobe Reader LE and Windows Live will also survive a hard reset, correct?
Thanks.
anything is the remove programs folder will get deleted but dont worry everything you need including Office is just a link away. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=364366
Ok, I just noticed that MS Office Mobile is actually on one of the CD's that came with the unit. I wondered why it was showing up in the Remove Programs folder. I received my device with WM6 already installed from the dealer so I didn't realize that it's not pre-installed in WM6.
Also, another question regarding the hard reset. I synchronize with Outlook on my laptop and my contact database has about 1,600 contacts. After a hard reset, would it be better to delete my existing ActiveSync partnership and create a new one. Or, would connecting to my existing partnership after a hard reset cause any problems.
I am assuming that because my current partnership was originally set up to sync both ways, that once connected after a hard reset, it will realize there are no contacts on the device and automatically transfer them over from my laptop. Is there anything I am missing.
And one last thought based on eagle 1's tip regarding GPRS Monitor not playing nice, has anyone else come across any other programs that cause problems and I should stay away from? That includes the Sprite Backup Tool included on the disc.
Is there a problem with sprite backup? I don't notice any yet.
Sorry, I should have clarified. I don't know if there is a problem with Sprite. I am just asking if anyone else has found it causes any trouble.
My reasons for asking are that I have just done a hard reset and so far I have not loaded any programs. Once I sync my Outlook contacts back, I will think about re-installing individual programs. But this time, I will do it one-by-one.

Oh yes, you should reinstall all your program one by one. If not, you'll simply bring back whatever that caused the slow down.

A way to cure 'Memory Leak'

I'd been experiencing memory leak problem for months. Atleast 1-3 soft-resets were a must within each day. I'd tried out many way to resolve and now I think I've found a way to get over it.
But first, the memory leak in my sense is the decreasing of program's free RAM after each soft reset. Even you are not touching your ppc, your free RAM still going down and hang up at the end.
In my case I primaryly noticed the service.exe size was becoming bigger and bigger from 200KB to 16+MB within few hours (possibly). The problem caused by windows live service. I still do not know any technical reasons behind but after I deleted some Windows Live registry keys, the problem has gone. Now is after my 2 days test, the services.exe has never gone beyond 1.6 MB. System is now very stable no reset required for days.
This might help some system having same problem, so I come here and share this. BUT USE IT AS YOUR OWN RISK.
Go into registry,
HKLM\Services\Windows Live
Delete the keys inside EXCEPT following,
Platform
Plugins
Sync
Version
Also, delete keys inside 'Plugins' EXCEPT following,
Contracts
Messaging
Profile
GOOD LUCK !
nice I will test!
Ill try it out... Hope it doesn't create any issues... Those changes seem ok :\
I don't think many other people are experiencing memory leaks like you, perhaps you should look at your ROM version and what software you have on your device.

16MB+ for your services.exe?!?!? Jeez...
Which build are you using and on which device? I have refrained from cooking WL applications in my Vogue and if what you are saying is true, then I might just start cooking it in (or not at all, depending on your answer )

A way to completely restore the Windows Live registry tree is uninstall and then re-install WLM cab file.
I used WLM versions Windows Live 10.6.0034.0800 (Fixed).cab and WindowsLive_0409.PPC2005_arm.cab. Both versions generated memory leak on my Mitac mio A-702.
There's no new ROM available from the manufacturer nor any cooked ROM available so far.
And most important is I'm just a cute end-user lol.
Anyway hope this post might help somebody.
bump.........
I wish I could find a way to get Pocket CM Contacts v.29 to run without memory leak. It's unusable for me. My Kaiser will be running at 55%, I get a few text messages with PCM running, and suddenly it climbs up to 80% till I close it out completely.
Damn shame.
