I-Mate K-JAM - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=125518
Looks like this is I-Mate's edition of the HTC Wizard.

Interesting, its developing day by day it seems.....i'd like to see the T-Mobile UK costs and dates now.

I never buy with contracts simply because I hate my device being plastered with "VODAFONE LIVE!" everywhere :|

Remove the UI then....it's that easy!

But then... Imate K-JAM + Vodafone (£35/mo) == £88.95+(£35*12) == £508.95.
QTek 9100 SIM free == £410
Hrrrm
I wasnt just talking about the software customisations either - also the horrible painted on labels

Hmmm £35 a month ? I got my magician (T-Mobile) for free on an 18 month contract (£15 a month/ 200 mins anytime/100 texts) and I can upgrade after 12 (dunno what price tho)
Also, your sim-free Qtek has how many minutes a month allowance ?
We each make our choices, Im not saying yours is wrong, but to outright dismiss a contract is denying yourself the pleasure of having the phone co's subsidise your choice of handset
As to the painted on labels, get a sugar cube LOL

Hehe I was going to suggest Duraglit Brasso for the painted labels ;p I dont know, theres just something about me that wouldn't let me join a contract. I hate being tied down.

well most places i've seen carry then without simlocks are small online and stores and such and i would very much doubt they could supply 16 that fast
maybe if you went to o2 or tmobile you could buy a pile and get them unlocked and without sim think they often sell them with that option but you have to pay alot! more
O2 and tmobile wont do that :x
Anymore idea??!?
Thanks in advance.
well maybe orange here they sell the xda2 under the name SPV M1000
and if you want to buy it wihtout a subscription
they cost 928.597 GBP a pop
so if you want 16 it's 14848 GBP
a bit on the pricy side if you ask me though
Not an ideal option but might be one to go down.
not sure if orange uk ofer them yet though cant see it on their site
Contacted Dangaard Belgium.
There seems to be a production problem for the moment with the 2020.

When is o2 uk going to release the XDA mini?!

I have been patiently waiting for months now for this superb phone to come to o2 uk. I am already over due an upgrade but have been waiting untill the mini is available. But the wait is starting to annoy me and i am thinkin of jus leaving and going to t-mobile and picking up an MDA Compact. Anyone got any idea when the mini is coming to the uk? i have called o2 and they are as much help as a kick in the balls.
thaks,
Tom
Orange is releasing thier SPV M500 which is essentially a Jam, but it's also rumored it has 128mb RAM, may it's worth holding out a little bit longer for that
very interesting - if it does have 128mb of ram then it is definately worth waiting a bit for - but hopefully not too long! (i am a very impatient person!)
SPV M500
The SPV M500 is already available - I have one now, but alas it does not have 128mb Ram !
hmm if that's the case then i would still rather wait for the o2 XDA mini as i can probably get it cheaper as an upgrade an d i don't have the hastle of moving contracts etc. So any one got any idea when it is likely to be coming out?

I spoke to O2 UK about this a few days ago and the guy on the phone said not to hold my breath waiting for it as they may not do it here in the UK!
I was with O2 and in the same position a few months back - eventually I went with an Orange contract and a Qtek S100 (2 year warranty) - the interesting part is that orange will match O2's '200' contract, so essentially you end up with the same deal as O2 with the benefits of Orange (241 cinema tickets are great) and a extra years warranty! You don't _need_ 128mb, the bigstorage conversion takes care of that! Compared to the XDA2 it's incredible - just as fast, the SIZE OF A PHONE (AT LAST) and battery life is far, far better (i no longer need to charge EVERY day).
Do it...
I bought mine from:
http://www.a1comms.co.uk/store/merchant-4-34-305-Phones.ihtml
..but do shop around. Sell you old device on ebay - i sold mine for 350ukp with a gps unit!
I see they're doing an O2 promotion right now - so you could stick with O2 and save some cash!
e.g.
"O2 200 with 50 messages + Promotion (12mths) £30 per month, phone cost £29.99"
Or do what i do.It takes forever for the companys here in the uk to get the decent phone,if ever so when your upgrae is due,get the best phone possible, sell it on e-bay then buy whatever phone sim free ie i mate jam  that way you don't have to spend time removing all orange,o2 etc's crap off it.You can even sell the phone you got now too to raise more.Works every time for me!

To not install the 'crap' just reset the device after windows setup, that way the extended rom isn't installed and you can do it by hand. I did the math and it would of cost me more to buy, sell and then buy again - remember you can drop your contract rate post-six months in which brings the cost down again. Besides, the problem is, that O2 do not offer the magician as an upgrade
right cheers for the replies guys - very interesting, i am shocked however that o2 is probably not going to realease this phone! big mistake in my opinion! looks like i had better give up waiting then and go do some searchin around and some maths to find the best deal i can!
thanks again,
Tom
i got my s100 on o2 100 for £39.99 and £25 a month contract,

great device (obviously not branded as o2 but its still the same)

I-Mate K-JAM vs Qtek 9100

Is there any obvious reason why the K-JAM is about £60 ($108) more expensive than the 9100? I'm assuming they're either made in the same factory or the same "blueprints" are given to each company to make the device. If this is the case then I'm guessing I-Mate is just playing off of it's well established brand name... or maybe there are just some software differences.
Thoughts?
The only thing I can think of is the support you get from I-mate. Now I know its not great but have you tried to find an English support site for the QTEK..
Hehe, this is true.

TBH I've not been able to work out what the 'offical' qtec site is... They all seem to be too naff to be a corprate site.
Is it http://www.qtek.fi/ ?

I _think_ its the .fi site. Usually foreign websites are all naff (I mean look at anything .com.tw).

A better site but "distributör för Qtek-produkterna" not them
Still - I have to say the lack of web site etc has convinced me that the extra £50 or so and 1 year warrenty instead of 2 is worth it in the long run so I'll probably get an Imate.
Terran
can we have a list of best price/dealer for the qtek 9100 and the imate k jam sim free, from all purchasers to be in the uk?
qtek 9100 on buymobilephones.net £429 inc vat
imate k-jam amazon.co.uk £449 inc vat
anyone found better deals?
thanks for any replies.
Qtek 9100 on www.smartdevicesdirect.com is £410.08
I-mate K-JAM on www.smartdevicesdirect.com is £468.83
I've ordered the Qtek from above back when it was only £400 (they raised the price by £10 pre-tax!).
Hrm, £449.99 for a K-JAM, thats a very good price indeed. If I trusted that Amazon would get stock early I'd probably change my order.
for a change i have to be patient, going on holiday next week, so wont place an order untill i get back

international shipping ?
the more i think about it, i would prefer to get the i-mate k-jam, due to the availability of support.
with this type of product you are more likely to have a software problem than a hardware problem, two years is great but probably not as useful as support.
i still cannot find on-line support for qtek in english
note for rookery, do you know anyone in the UK who could order and post to you? that way no import duty cause it's a gift.
p.s. amazon.co.uk is still showing better price for imate k-jam £449 inc vat

Yes, it will cost £349 + £35 shipping around HK5500 when it ship to me, earlier, i think this device will only cost USD4xx, but now it cost much than that, reconsider to get one or not, for me, HK5500 for just a phone, not so reasonable, Thanks for the information

yes, it has a touch screen
Amazon is good but they don't indicate when they will get stock !! If you are a patient person for a new PDA then it's worth waiting at least a month or so before buying as the price always drops.
If your anything like me though waiting a couple of months after release would be detrimental to my health  .
Imagine , you are walking down the road one month after release on your nokia because you sold your Jam to fund your new K-Jam, you turn the corner and there is a guy chatting away on his brand new K-Jam  Nooooooo !!! I'd rather eat Liver

i-mate JASJAR or O2 XDA Exec !!!???

hi , i wanna buy a HTC Universal , so
will i buy O2 XDA Exec SIM unlocked or i-mate JASJAR ????
please help
Really makes no difference as its identical hardware.
The differences are purely cosmetic, however you do have the choice to switch ROMs so, like me at present, you could run an I-Mate ROM on an O2 Exec or vice versa or any other combinations.
Can anyone confirm that loading another Reseller's ROM on a branded device invalidates warranties as I know this has been hinted at before.
Thanks

This is true. A provider will generally only accept a device for repair if it is using one of their supported ROMs, so if you get into problems, you will need to reflash back to a provider supplied ROM
the exec looks good in black.....but the damn problem is in keeping it nice and shining!
The black color attracts a lot of dirt, finger prints & grime! Half the time you'd end up wiping and shining it!
You might be better of with a jasjar ;-)
my 2 cents!
S
There are people on eBay selling silicone "condoms" for the Exec and they are pretty good. I bought mine and it was delivered in a week or so. The only problem with it is that I need to remove it in order to use my car cradle
Buy the Exec if it is from O2 UK as they have a good warranty scheme (2 years warranty). I have owned both the JJ and Exec and I prefer the screen of the Exec, even though people say they are the same!
basically the exec just looks the coolest. A few friends of mine cancelled blackberry orders when they saw the o2 exec. Also it depends if you want a data tariff with the device or not. If you do, I think o2 has the best data tariff scheme at the moment as:
1. You can buy data only if you don't want voice.
2. Data tariff amounts give the same discount as equivalent cost voice tariffs.
3. Volume of data tariff is good, (+VAT) £14.5 for 35mg, £18 for 75, £25 for 2000 and £45 for 1G.
The best 3g coverage in the UK is, as usual, vodafone .......
thaks for all your relyes , and after reading this i'll buy an O2 Exec
and thanx
Hang On...
I went for the Exec two months ago for all the reasons above (inc the 75Mb data only plan) but you might be better advised to wait a couple of weeks and go for the T Mobile MDA Pro.
There are rumours on Modaco that T Mobile is going to release an unlimited data plan for £7.50 a month!
Apparently T Mobile will unlock the MDA for £15.
xerxes
On a slightly diff note here.. just wanted to tell u guys.. here in India AIRTEL offers an unlimited data plan for Rs.200/month only which is approx US$4.55/month only. with EDGE speeds
YIPPIE !!!

Picking out a Hermes. Do most of you use 8525's?

I'm kicking around the idea of buying a Hermes, it's a sweet phone and it seems to have fallen a bit in price since I last looked at it. When searching for the different branded versions on eBay, I noticed that I could pick up a Cingular-branded Hermes (8525) a good deal cheaper than the rest of them. Are there any major shortcomings to the 8525 over other versions of the Hermes outside of the missing front camera? Using an American GSM provider, would I even miss the front camera?
I'm on T-Mobile, but if I grabbed a Cingular Hermes I'd obviously just go ahead and unlock it and use it with my service. Honestly, I think it would be pretty sweet to get the T-Mo UK branded Hermes (MDA Vario II) and carry that around instead. Then my friends would be like "whoa dog why does my T-Mobile store not have this phone how did you score it!!!" and I would be like "hell nah homies this **** is elite". But alas, it's not worth paying $600+ for a T-Mo Europe branded one when I can get the Cingular-branded one for well under 500.
Do you guys who have used multiple Hermes' have any preference? Would I likely be just as well off with an 8525 (given that I plan to flash it) as an HTC branded "TyTN" or other HERM200 version of the phone?
Thanks!
I got the 8525... If your not going to use the video calling, why pay more?

That's just it, though -- I'm wondering if it's even possible to use video calling in the United States. Is it?
More importantly, are there any replacement shells or cover-ups available for the 8525 such that one could make it appear not to be a Cingular device? I know I'm weird, but if I buy a Hermes for use with T-Mobile USA, I think it looks silly to have Cingular branding on the ****.
Thanks so much!

I bought a Vodafone 1605 on Ebay and used it with T-mobile and now Cingular....I don't mind the brand name on the phone cos I know it's all the same inside
The Vario II pricing is coming down in the UK ... just got given one for £50 on a renewal which is roughly 60% less than I was quoted about six weeks ago.
(typing as I wait for a full resync on my shiny new wm6 black to complete )
You might be able to snap one up off eBay UK on the cheap if your timing is good ...

I am pretty sure a little alcohol and rubbing would remove the branding.... if your really desperate you could use a little nail polish remover...
I think you can buy "shells" for these phones on ebay. I don't know if they are interchangeable, aka using a Vario II shell on a Cingular 8525, but I would assume they would as long as the button configuration is similar.

That's actually a really good idea; I could only find about two total MDA Vario II's on ebay.com (which makes perfect sense), but when I went to ebay.co.uk there were ****loads. Unfortunately, it seems that most sellers only offer to ship within the UK so I'd have to find one ahead of time that would be okay with shipping to the States.
That brings my next question though. What's the deal with QWERTY vs. QWERTZ keyboards? The MDA Vario II seems to be the latter, and I've typed on a QWERTY all my life and really have no intention of switching. Is it possible to not only map the buttons to QWERTY on a Vario II, but to physically switch the keys?
Man, what a pain this is all turning out to be. I guess I should probably just score a Cingular-branded Hermes and be done with it.
