Full Internet And Pop3 e.mail On PAYG - Networking

Hi everyone
This is the first time I have posted something on this site so I hope this is usefull to someone.
I have been trying for weeks to get full internet and pop3 e.mail on PAYG O2 . I am now convinced that this is not going to happen after speaking to the O2 tech helpline several times and costing a small fortune. So I have had to take the unwanted step of moving to Orange PAYG. Well what can I say not only is the support from orange the best I have experenced but it has an 0800 number. Anyway having got setup on Orange PAYG and using the settings at the below link I was up and running first time, the instructions are quite long but well worth it, these settings may well have come from this site .
Hope this helps someone

MMS+GPRS Tarif not possible, 02 UK

I was on the phone to o2 UK for 15mins today trying to enable MMS on my handset. Is is not possible! o2 will not allow the use of GPRS and MMS together. You can enable MMS but must disable GPRS. I asked if they had any plans to enable the use of both. The woman on the other end said no!!
My Serial Cable is on order. My contract runs out in August. Change of providers me thinks. Maybe orange and the Sony p800, just for fun...
[I also use my sim chip in a Siemens S55, hence the MMS request]
What experience if any have other people had trying to enable MMS please lets see what I am doing wrong...
Martin
I've had exactly the same problem here. Being rather annoyed by this state of affairs, I spent a good three hours repeatedly calling both O2 and Carphone Warehouse to try and get a decent response as to why this was not possible.
The responses fell into two camps:
1) Technical problems - "GPRS takes all the available slots so MMS can't push messages through". This smells like BS to me, even though I got this answer from fairly clued up tech support people on the data team. After all, it's virtually impossible to keep a permanent GPRS connection going at present, so if I'm not using GPRS, why ever should I not be able receive MMS?
2) Simple administration problems on the billing system - it's currently impossible for the O2 accounts to have both a GPRS data plan and MMS activated purely due to red tape in the billing system. This seems more likely to me. Expecially as one can get MMS activated, but have to 'downgrade' GPRS to a pay as you use service at £5/MB. That's an active GPRS and MMS service by my reckoning - it's got to be red-tape.
I was told 'unofficially' that they were looking into this and had a very loose date of end of May for this silly situation to be rectified. However, we all know how loose O2's deadlines are - EUU3 was released in March, with no file in the installation dated after November.
I even got a semi-official email (quoted below), but this, IMHO, is plain confused as the proposed solution quotes a Rom update. If unavailability is due to "necessary changes taking place on our network systems" then why would it require a client side ROM update? Basically, I beleive this just refers to the availability of EzWap 2.5 from O2.
Re. your query on MMS usage on the Xda.
After mailing the relevant people concerned, I have the following information..
MMS will not work with the Xda at this moment in time due to necessary changes taking place on our network systems (no timescales to hand).
(This would possibly account for your Service Provider being unable to provision MMS for you at this time).
O2 are also driving to have MMS available for the Xda in the next few months - possibly as part of the next ROM after 3.16.32 (currently in testing).
I hope this helps..

I changed my data plan from 13.99 for 3mb, to £2.25 (maybe £2.95 I forget because of my frustration!) per 1MB, PAYG. This is one hell of a saving for me. So if I try again, I should be able to get MMS enabled. Confused!
I asked specifically:
"I cannot use GPRS and MMS on the same phone"
02 "no, you will have to disable gprs".
At the price I have been quoted for PAYG 5MB is less than £15. So I'm on a better deal?
Is there any official, or accurate information on this please.
Martin
Guys,
I have just spoken to O2, and there is another system that they use that will allow GPRS & MMS to co-exist on the same tariff. It's called the "die" system, and involves you "porting" your number to a different customer base within O2.
Sound daft to me - but heres the catch. You have to be out of contract, i.e. over the 12 months initial period. In my case it is this Sept. So I will be chasing them then.
Ho Hum.

The issue is one of service providers.
O2 stores are OK - generally you can just about get what you're after.
But, if you bought your kit from dixons or Carphone, they don't have to offer MMS and GPRS, even if O2 support it! stupid, huh? guess it will cost money offering services people want.
Now, if O2 direct can't do it then that's pretty ****.
I have an O2 SIM from an O2 shop, which has MobileWeb and MMS enabled (bought with a 7650). Slips easily into an xda...
But, MMS on xda is prety poor... :?
mms
i got mine from o2 and they have said that i cant have mms and gprs as the xda cant deal with the both ????????????? :?:
> the xda cant deal with the both
Of course it can. This seems to be just a techno-BS-excuse to try and put off potential users. OK so the XDA probably can't receive a WAP push message for an MMS when GPRS is in use, but then, it can't maintain a permanent GPRS connection anyway.
IMHO the reason they don't allow both tarrifs is purely administrative.
mms
sounds like excuses i am currently on rom 3.16 and i have had my xda for a few weeks. o2 arent very helpfull and they shouldnt be selling this product if they cant provide the support for it 8)
mms
you cant use mms on the xda its not possible to get the correct Ezwap 2.5 connection and mms settings for this program to work in the UK. If any one can help then email: [email protected]. cheers

Not excuses at all. The XDA does not support MMS features 'out of the box' and without using no UK Acredited software (acredited in Asia & Australisia). If O2 don't wish to support a 'feature' that was not advertised as being part of the package, then that is down to them. They never said it would work in the first place.
If you download the o2 gprs settings direct from their site its free!
They are currently running a free use with fair use policy of course.
I'm using a t610 with this no problems.
Good hunting...
I work for the Aberdeen O2 store and we have came acros this problem with a few of the billing agents.
CCL and Cell ops I believe to be the worst at this. There is no plans for them upgrading there system and you should leave them if you want the XDA2 or any other phone to run the gprs and mms at the same time.
The O2 stores now use a new billing company the same one for o2 online connections and I got my XDA2 through them and it works mms and gprs fine.
There are loads of billing compaines within o2 carphone warehouse and singlepoint seem to be the worst.
Also please note that o2 direct is normally your billing agent and there really **** when it comes to knowledge on the XDA's.
Us boys in the Aberdeen store know our stuff so if your stuck just pop in past it's probly a fair bit away from everone but its a nice drive up here
Richard
I had the same explaination from O2 after some 6.5 hours on the phone over the course of a week.
I'm a pay monthly customer - they told me the tarrif was incompatible.
After some complaining, one of the guys in the data services dept turned MMS on, and sent an email to the billing dept.
two days later I had a text message saying it was all up and runing.
I have tried it, and it works. I have MMS & GPRS
now if only I could get this bloody SanDisk SD Wifi card to work !!!

GPRS On O2 UK, Y is it not working?

Hi all, I hope someone can help with this,
I have tried to all O2 using 100 (but this keeps getting disconnected automatically) so I have to call as 0845 number which uses my minutes + I was waiting 30 minutes to speak to someone and when i eventually did get through they hung up (I am well Pi***d off with o2). Anyhow
I want to connect to the net using GPRS, however no GPRS symbol is displayed and if i try, i get a message saying "No moden at above number" any help would be great.
Cheers
Matt
Right, couple of things to suggest.
Firstly (and I know this sounds stupid)....O2 have recently installed new call centre handling "things" which SHOULD route your call more efficiently but as they have been put in by IBM (also, responsible for more recent "good inovations" in O2) the bits aren't working v well! - trust me as I speak from experience and "from the horses mouth" - I work for them!
So chill when you do get through....the staff on the phones are getting major grief from customers, dealers and fellow staff members (mainly store staff) because it's taking ages......It's not their fault!!
Anyway, back to your problem.....you haven'y said whether you got a new connection or an upgrade.....if it's the latter did you ahve GPRS on your previous phone and did it work?
If it's a new connection then GPRS hasn't been provisioned for some reason (although it can tkae 48 hrs max from connection to go through), same goes if it was an upgrade and you never used GPRS on the old phone.
Give me the answeres to these questions and I'll give you my best guess!
Mike
Check settings
I use this site for settings:
http://www.filesaveas.com/index.html
I would also suggest that you check that GPRS has actually been enabled by O2 for you. I had problems with MMS not being enabled although I HAD asked for it.
Thanks Mike for your responce, and I promise not to go ape at your colleagues.
I have a new account with O2, connected today, however seems strange that it could take upto 48hrs to get GPRS active, I was recently with ORANGE and as soon as I activated the phone (a SPV) the GPRS was active there and then. Ah well I will wait the 48hrs and hopefully it will come active sometime soon.
As an O2 employee, you may be able to assist on this query. As a paymonthly customer on O2 400, I am supposted to call 100 from my XDAII to call CS, but when I do this I get disconnected automatically as if the number is dead, any ideas?
Many thanks for your help.
Matt
An update on the aboe. I have managed to sort this problem out, I did a soft reset and when rebooted I noticed the phone settings were on Germany, changed it to UK and GPRS works fine.
Matt
for anyone searching with this problem
MODEM NOT FOUND AT DIALED NUMBER
1. phone CS on 0845 and make sure GPRS is on! (APN provisioning for mobile web access (you can 'check' on the 100 number, but they can't turn it on for you)
2. 3.30pm is the 'switch over' time, so soft reboot after this time each day (
up to 24hrs) ...... phone again if still not on !
3. GERMANY is default if you go to MY XDA - connections. it will always be on Germany. but the wizzard should of set it to UK when you first set it
Do you have the correct settings for wap over gprs, email over gprs using O2 payg sim with free gprs pages and wap.
Is there any portal to get the settigs to the O2 phone directly?

Checking free minutes on O2

Hi guys,
Bit of a newbie question here, but how do i check how many free minutes i have left on my O2 (UK) tariff?
On my orange, i just dial 150 then 1, and a computerised woman tells me how many inclusive minutes are left (and it doesn't cost anything)
Can i do the same on o2? Whats the number and does it cost?
cheers
Anyone know the way to do this?
Only other way i can think is to reset the call counter each month
Would be nice if it was as easy as orange to check your minutes!

AFAIK, Orange are the ONLY UK net to offer this mate.
No to O2, Voda, T-Mobile, or Virgin, AFAIK.
On T-Mobile it is automated but on O2 you dial 150 and speak to operator and ask for you remaining minutes.
Fresly
does anyone know if it is possible to see how much data you have used on GPRS, or is this a similar thing, I.E. call cutomer services?
All of these questions can be answered by logging on to the O2 web site as well. I know the O2 web site is SLOW, but it gives the answers re. remaining free minutes etc. The only thing I couldn't find anywhere was GPRS usage.
You can see how many minutes you have used, including GPRS charges so far (though some of these take a few days to register) on the o2 accountmanagement website.
You need to sign up for it, to manage your account online, it also allows you to auto change tariffs etc, and gives you itemised billing etc.
accountmanagement.o2.co.uk
No way to do this from your phone afaik

O2 Exec with Singlepoint SIM

Hi,
I've ordered an O2 Exec and have an O2 account but the account is managed by Vodafone since they purchased Singlepoint (or SingleIQpoint, as I preferred to call them).
When I called Vodafone to ask whether I could upgrade my account to a 3G one I was told that my existing SIM card in the Exec would allow me to use 3G data speeds (no indication of exact speed) but that video calling would be impossible unless I shifted my account to a full Vodafone one.
Has anyone got any insights as to whether this is accurate or not?
Many thanks!
Case of SingleIQpoint again I fear! Call O2 and get the real story!
Although this may not be of any use, I had a similar experience with a vodafone reseller (who went t#ts up) a few years ago, I think it was with GPRS, I had to get a new SIM from Voda direct.
And as for singlepoint 4u /cauldwell grp, the least said the better!
I'm now stuck in one of those infernal loops where I call 02 who tell me to call Vodafone who tell me to call O2 who...
I'm now desperately trying to think up some scheme to sort this out.
I've had my Vodafone/SingleIQpoint/O2 account for about 2 years now. If I get the PAC number from another account, can my Vodafone/SingleIQpoint/O2 number be changed to it?
Please help me before my brain escapes through my ear...
@The Doctor, just use the O2 SIM you have and if you can't make video calls complain to O2 and SingleIQpoint. They will have to give you a new O2 SIM if you complain hard enough.
Also threaten to report Singlepoint to OfCom!

O2 XDA Stellar (Kaiser) on Web Bolt On UK

I've got an O2 XDA Stellar on PAYG and I've bought the £7.50 "Web Bolt On". Thanks to a CAB I downloaded somewhere I've now able to view the web pages, but nothing else works: IMAP, MSN, weather updates etc. Needless to say I didn't pay 7.50 just to squint at web pages on a tiny screen!
Does anyone know if it's possible to get these other services working and what I would have to do to configure it?
If not I suppose I'll have to abandon my call credit and ditch this mob for 3!
Cheers in advance for any help if you can give it.
you need the full o2 prepay settings installing in the device, comes as default with postpay as, through o2 the xda aint availabe on pay and go.
call cust sservices they will email the step by step to you
Thanks. I've already been on the phone to O2 and once they established that the Stellar isn't available on PAYG they couldn't help me. I downloaded a CAB which gives me prepay settings but it only works for websites.
I paid for the bolt on and they sent me some simple settings in my email to make sure i had the right settings and i could use everything fine
Slightly odd but i would assume its because i am pay monthly

It has been suggested to me that O2 PAYG do not offer the full internet access for the users, I can not confirm this as I am not an O2 customer. Though some people say that the PM settings work (I suppose its just a trial and error thing) .
Both settings can be found here, hope it helps...

apprently PAYG users must use the proxy

o2 pay and go do not offer the full internet to their customers, you either have to upgrade to pay monthly or get a contract, or have as you say , a half baked version of the net where you can only surf some web pages and not be able to use msn or email etc.
I wouldnt bother with 3 either as they are pathetic, half the time you cant even get a phone signal ,let alone a 3g signal.
Thanks everyone. I've already bought the 3 SIM so I have nothing to lose by trying them. If they turn out to be rubbish - not unlikely it would seem - I'll have to think again.
Mate, how long the battery lasts with active use of unlimited web and regular calls and messaging in hours?
i can leave GPRS on all day long with msn running whilst making calls and receiving messages etc..
battery goes down to about 70%
I've not used GPRS much yet. I know that with GPS/satnav on the battery ran out after about 4 hours or so. I've bought a cheapo car charger off eBay so it won't happen again (and some replacement styluses, cheap but they're a bit of a tight fit).
Have you TRied the O2 Simplicity Package which can include Web access
Hi Guys,
Have you heard of th O2 Simplicity Package offered by O2?
I went from an O2 pay monthly contract to the Simplicity Deal.
You are commited to 30 days only.
I pay £20 per month, I receive:
400 any network voice minutes (i often select my 3 montly treat as 20 extra minutes to bring it up to 420 mins),
1000 Text Messages
UNLIMITED WEB ACCESS FROM MY PDA!!! as a free bolt on.
I was originally offered umlimited O2 - O2 calls. But later opted for the free internet as it was more of a cost saving for me.
And I get the full access with my web settings.
You will find it on the O2 Website, well advertised as the Simplicity plan at different levels.

While we are on topic of settings - need a serial number
Hi again folks,
While we are on the topic of web settings.
I have just bought an HTC TYTN II, I would like to install the O2 Windows Mobile 6.1 ROM, I prefer the O2 ROM as all the settings are pre-programmed and the layout are as O2 expect them so I can call them for Tech support.
Unfortunately, I cannot access the file as I don't have the O2 version (the XDA STELLAR) and you need to enter your O2 XDA STELLAR Serial Number to access it.
Is there any kind person out there that might be willing to PM (message) me with a serial number of an XDA STELLAR that I could enter to get the file please.
Hoping someone can help me,
Thanks Folks,
wirralot
PS: Isn't the TYTN II / XDA STELLAR just the BEST phone ever!!
