it turns out the builtin PocketPC IMAP email client supports the IDLE feature.
this feature allows an IMAP server to push emails out to an IMAP client. I have checked this out on a PC with the brilliant Mozilla Thunderbird mail client and a free IMAP IDLE mail service (www.fastmail.fm) - i.e. emails appear in the Thunderbird inbox without having to manually send/receive. It works flawlessly and it is free!
on a pocketpc device the theory is the same: configure the builtin messaging client to do IMAP and presto, push email!. The practice, though, is not quite as simple. Manual IMAP works fine: do a send/receive and IMAP mails arrive no problems. Push email SOMETIMES works, but I dont know or when, and delays are sometimes long (10-30mins).
Anyone out there tried this before? feedback would be very appreciated!

I found the problem with all these built in synch things is that they "always, almost" work :? Now it you want something that "always" works and is "almost free" (free for the first 2 months, then $4-00 a month after) try Smartners AlwaysOnMail (www.alwaysonmail.com)
Not much help with your IMAP problem I am afraid, but at least this will give you 2 months to figure it out :lol:

Just registered with web.de and got a free e-mail account, and yes, IMAP works, but only manually. Push email using IMAP IDLE functionality does not work.

I currently have T-Mobile USA myemail running and it sends me an alert everytime I get a new email at work, I then have to open my inbox and do a send/recieve its not a problem but I would like to know if an sms can trigger a send/recieve??? I know that I can set it to do one every # of mins but having the gprs constantly connected decreases the battery life

Take a look at vgsmail in the magician thread 'pus-email now available'. It's an imap client running on WM2003.
You got to have gprs constantly connected though, but I can hardly live without it anymore.

oltp's advice is worth a look - a different way of collecting the mail -much like a blackberry using IMAP instead of polling
I would love to look at alternativs but my corporate email is not accessible from outside the network and has no imap or pop access
we are on lotus notes so I have to use an app like smartner or t-mobile myemail it does the job and I found a t-mobile app that does what I needed

I know that i can manage my sync times for hotmail by going
start>messaging>menu>options>hotmail>sync schedule
so i can basically only get my hotmail emails during the day, or when i want them, but there doesn't seem to be a similar option with outlooks direct push.
just wondering is it a possibility, or am i missing something simple?

The reason why you can choose not to sync during the night with your hotmail is because you need to check periodically if there is new mail on hotmail, thus using the internet connection regularly.
Push mail works the other way around: whenever the server gets a message, it will contact your device and tell it that there's new mail.
I think that for stopping Pushmail from sending you mails at night you need to change a serverside setting, because it is the server that does the work.

You can set the schedule of your Exchange email by going to Programs > ActiveSync> Menu > Schedule
In Schedule you can set how often to sync for peak and off-peak times, so what you would probably want to do is set your off-peak times to "Manually" or "Every 4 hours" etc.
At the bottom of the page there is a link that directs you to the page of adjusting the Peak Times.

Sorry but that's wrong.
Hotmail is now pushed to WM6.1 phones when you use the Live Wizard to set it up. (Other webmail emails will need a 3rd party app).
If your Outlook is Exchange Push, then you should have the same settings for both.
Is it possible to change the function of the Send / Receive button (on the e-mail manila tab) so that it synchronises ALL of the e-mail accounts you have on your phone?
Bump for help. Surely this should be possible. It is pretty pointless to have to select each mailbox and press Send/Receive for each one
I was thinking this too, I would love a button that synced both my accounts. Surely for someone that knows what they are doing this would be quite easy?

I find the battery on the HD is fine to use push email (constant connection) so you get your emails immediately.
I use www.seven.com (their beta program which is free)
This converts any imap, pop3, gmail, works exchange server (emails, contacts, calendar), etc email into push email.

How do you find this with data costs etc. Do you ever go above your monthly limit etc?
Don't really need any new solutions. Personally giving my details to a third party so they can send me the emails as I receive them doesn't appeal to me. If I receive an email a couple of hours late, not harm will be done

Why is it so hard to push send/recieve if you want it for each account. How many email accounts do you need to have? I have 4 - its not big deal.

I can only receive/send one account at one time by signing the Windows live messenger and selecting to synchronize email.

Hey everyone! my friend and i have hd2's but he has 6 email accounts and he was asking me is there a way to make all his emails come into one inbox like on blackberries...i suppose its called "unified email"
ive been using windows mobile for a year now and i cant seem to find a way to "unify" the emails..is there a way for this to be done?

I don't know of a specific way to do this on WinMo; however, a work around would be to setup a GMail account (or Hotmail, Yahoo, whichever) and configure that to download email from the six accounts.
Once you have done this, you would only need to setup the Gmail (or other) account on your phone and everything should all come down in one place.
Not really a cure, but a solution nonetheless.

I've used Flexmail for this purpose. It can integrate yahoo, gmail, hotmail, and other types of POP mail accounts and send them to you via imap push. With Flexmail, you can set rules for incoming emails so that they automatically sort into folders on your phone. I like it a lot.

Flexmail was excellent when I used it on a Treo Pro. I've installed it on my HD2 and found it was not at all useable without a D-pad. I just couldn't get it to work right.

Gmail does everything you listed as well via pop, imap push, and exchange for free. If you use the exchange setup you can sync your calendar and contacts as well, works great.

I am receiving my Yahoo email and work IMAP email in the native Android email app. Yesterday afternoon, my IMAP email just stopped working. Yahoo is fine. I can send email, but not get email from the IMAP account.
I deleted the account, rebooted the phone and added the account back. All the settings are fine and check out, but it will not retrieve email.
I downloaded K9, and using the exact same settings, I can retrieve/send IMAP email without issues.
Any known bugs or ideas? The email is an exchange server, but we don't have active sync, so IMAP is used outside of work pc's.

I have a co-worker with a Sprint phone with Android on it (not sure which phone). She, too, is having troubles with IMAP with our work email as it will just stop sending/receiving emails periodically as well. This solves one problem in that I do not believe that this is just your phone. However, it creates two more problems in the sense that it is either Android problem or a problem with the email server.
I think it's an android thing. I have a few exchange accounts set up (first of all.. it does more than one... which is awesome), and the first time i sent an email my phone kept bouncing back with "can't send message" errors.. meanwhile.. the guys i sent the email to got repeat messages. one for every bounce back message I got. So it seems the built in email application isn't so great with emails. works fantastic with gmail though. I'm using a Touchdown trial. It's a $20 app. it's ok. i prefer the stock one.. .but it works fine so far.
