XDA-developers-SER-v11.exe for dummys like me, cant install - MDA, XDA, 1010 Software Upgrading

This is so embarrassing….
I follow the discussions here that you guys have about the XDA and have little or no idea about what you are talking about other than Jeff's XDA-developers-SER-v11.exe, would be cool to upgrade my XDA prototype with… except that when I try - both with my USB and serial cable - I get this message:
Error 011: Execute remote communication program error
Cannot execute remote communication program.
Please make sure that the USB/Serial cable is properly connected.
Having spent 15 quid in an 02 shop for the serial cable - even though it out to be able to install through the USB, I feel like a right twit.
My XDA has the following data:
ROM version: 2.66.00 ENG
ROM date: 02/21/02
Radio version: 3.19
Protocol version: 32S54
I would appreciate any ideas and of course understand if this post is too ridiculous to be answered…
Best regards
Carl

WOW! That is an early prototype indeed. We want that ROM! (You must have been in the loop way, way early!)
My guess would be that the ROM is so old that the version of ActiveSync included inside doesn't support the type of program manipulation the upgrade program needs.
What you need is an SD-card reader-writer for your PC, and Windows NT/2000 or XP installed. Then get our XDArit program and use it to write the ROM image contained in Jeff's exe-file to the SD-card, and use the bootloader to get the ROM into the device.
But as said above, first use that same bootloader to get the old ROM out of there onto an SD-card and then onto your disk. Info on how to do all this is on the XDArit page above.

You have no idea about the level of ridiculousness present in some of the posts here. Asking questions is good, assuming you're dumb or your question is ridiculous or embarassing is silly.

Wow,
Thanks for the quick reply,
will get onto it.

Brand new ROM version 3.16.32 ENG on my XDA

Hi all
This is my first post to this forum but I would like to report that theXDA i recieved today has a new ROM version that I cannot find info on the Net.
The Device Information screen reads
ROM version: 3.16.32 ENG
ROM date: 02/13/03
Radio version: 4.20.00
Protocol version: 32S54
As far as i can tell the differences are:
The Programs has the following new programs Sim Tool Kit, and Wireless Modem and I think the following may be new ot updated; EzWAPv2, myO2, Infrared Recieve (Let me know on these 3)
After the Auto Configeration is completed the following new stuff appears
A newer Today screen that has an O2 start menu. This has a direct link to E-MAIL (Inbox) SMS (SMS Inbox) INTERNET and WAP. If you touch the O2 logo on this is comes up with Informationen and o2 smart menu is powered by Vision To Reality
The text on this screen is in German (On a UK XDA sent to me by O2 this morning is a bit shabby)
and it lists the same as in the Device inforation screen plus the IMEI SMSC and a Softwareversion: o2V2R4.2.201
The Start menu has a myo2 button which links to my O2 mobile interactive services for XDA page
I don't know the ROM version to my old XDA so this stuff may or may not be new so again let me know by posting here.
The problems I have discoved to far are:
The screen flickers a lot. The backlight seems to be doing this. It flashes off and on again when it is supposed to be on
The Sim toolkit program does not work. You can click on it as much as you want and nothing will happen. This is a shame as the info i have found on the application indicates it could be quite usefull.
If anyone wants this rom version to play about on their XDA's let me know. I'm getting a serial cable soon (I've been told i need this to change stuff on the phone) so you can tell me how to download the ROM and e-mail it.
I have now registered

Thanks Tuurtje
I have a Dutch O2 XDA with following versions:
ROM version: 3.15.15 ENG
ROM date: 12/11/02
Radio version: 4.16.00
Protocol version: 32S54
Model No.: PW10A1 (DON'T KNOW BUILDER ID like PW10A1-xx)
Pocket PC: Version 3.0.12039 (Build 11178)
The model number is PW10A1
where to download the new rom and radio?
where to download the new rom and radio?
thanks
[email protected]
O2 told me yesterday that the download will be on their web site "very soon".
I have this version and I also have seen this flickering screen. It has only happened once and soft restart fixed it.
Another update on this is that the SMS-Name is fixed. However you need to enter the number in your Contacts in international format or the name will not show for incoming sms (same as SPV?). I prefer the Paragon fix.
I don't think the WAP browser is updated. It does not have MMS. I don't see any update to Infrared Recieve, it looks the same as previous version. The myO2 app is a new version. I think you had to download this new version via gprs into ram before, and now its in the rom.

"Wireless modem" sounds interesting. Do you have any idea what it does? Does it enables us to use the XDA as a GPRS modem for a seperate notebook?

Maybe it's the Reader problem.
XDArite.exe works with my MMC card, but not with my USB 2.0 6in1 Reader. It seems works with most USB 1.0 SD ONLY Reader perfectly.

You are probably right my reader is probably the most bargin basement one available (£4.50 on special offer from Maplin.co.uk 7 months ago)
My reader is a 6 in 1 USB 1.0 reader made by CARRY. Model UISDMC1
If anyone has any experience with gettng this to work with XDArite.exe it would be great. I'll try it with a SD card soon and see if it works with that. A couple of people (actually 2 exactly) have told me that their readers don't work with XDArite.exe and an MMC card but do with a SD card.
I might post again in a bit asking for recomendations for card reader if mine does not work.
In the meantime

error getting unlock code

Hi,
I tried the XDA unlock software.
After transfering and runing it on my XDA, I received only this message: "error getting unlock code"
Any advice would be highly appreciated...
cheers
golf
what version of roms are in your xda?
you can find this under: settings - system - device information
Thanks for your quick reply.
My ROM version is 3.12.07 ENG date 08/13/02
xdaunlock will not work with wince-3.12, you need at least wince-3.17
manupulator depends only on the radio rom. it works with 4.0? - 4.20
That was very quick, I am impressed!
My radio version is 4.06, protocol version 325S54
I found the manipulator, but this seems to require a serial cable.
My XDA only has a USB connection. Any advice of what to do?
many thanks
Hello,
I hope you can help me, I know there. I tried to use Manipulator to unlock an xda but after finding the xda on COM1 the status message just remains at 'getting data from phone' and beside SID and GID it says 'ERROR'.
Nothing shows beside the IMEI. My device info is:
ROM: 3.17.03 ENG
Date: 15/5/03
Radio version: 4.21.00
Protocol version: 32S54
Please help, Thanks
Aide
Aide,
sorry I do not know what to do.
My XDA is still locked and I am kind of lost myself.
If you hear something, please let me know.
all the best
golf
If you use The Manipulator: Did you all tell ActiveSync on the desktop not to use the serial port?
If you use XDAunlock.exe: you know it only works on O2 3.17.03, Qtek 3.16.52 and Special Edition ROMs ?
Thanks for the reply.
I tried the xdaunlock. which does not seem to be working with my 3.12 version.
Regarding the manipulator: I thought that only works for serial cables?
In your message "manipulator" was posted in orange color, but on my PC it doesn't work as a hyperlink?
Is there a newer version available somewhere without the serial cable?
many thanks for your time and effort.
I would really appreciated it, if we could get this up and running again.
cheers
Oh, Like an idiot I went and read all posts AFTER I had posted my 'problem' . Not a problem at all 'cos xdaunlock did it with no time wasted (it's O2 3.17.03.)
Problem solved, Thanks xda-developers you guys really are the GREATEST!!! (now if they could just tell me where to get a replacement touchscreen for the other one that broke...mumbles the ungrateful, greedy wretch  )
Thanks
Aide
PS Golf why don't you list all the steps you've taken so one of the more experienced guys can spot where things went wrong? and detailed error messages.
Aide,
congratulations in getting your XDA up and running with help of the developers.
Following your advise, here is what I have done so far in my attemp to unlock my UK XDA.
My ROM version is 3.12.07 ENG date 08/13/02
My radio version is 4.06, protocol version 325S54
I have downloaded the xdaunlock software and received the "error getting unlock code" message after running the unlock program on my XDA.
I have not downloaded the manipulator because of the warning on the webpage that you need to have a serial cable before downloading.
"Do not download or install The Manipulator unless you have a serial cable already, and need to reset the call counters or change the IMEI on phones with Radio software prior to 4.20"
I do not have a serial cable.
very much looking forward to any advise to help me out of this.
all the best
golf
It says that XDAunlock only works on ROM 3.16.52 or later, bascially all ROMs that have the Wireless Modem functionality. Backup your data and install Jeff's exe holding the XDA-developers Special Edition ROM v1.2, and you'll be happy.
Thanks for your advise.
If you don't mind before trying this, let me please verify some issues.
I would like to use my Orange Sim card, but Orange is not on the UK provider list on the webpage. Is that a problem?
Since 1.2 version canot be downloaded simply, I need to do this Mkron installation, which requires unix? How complicated is that for somebody who has not much IT skills at all? This part of the website sounds rather complicated to me?
There is no download link here. As mentioned at the beginning of this page, our Special Edition ROM is based on the 3.17.03 O2 ROM, and thus contains all sorts of software that is copyrighted and for which we probably have no permission to distribute. So what we're distributing instead is a kit called 'mkrom', preloaded with all the files needed to make your own Special Edition ROM image, provided you add an O2 ROM image for the kit to modify. To run the kit you need access to a unix machine with some software installed. Take a look at the 'mkrom' page for details.
If you're no computer wiz, and still want the Special Edition ROM, you'll have to wait for someone else to run 'mkrom', and share the output with you. 'mkrom' outputs a binary image file (with '.nb1' extension) for use with our XDA ROM Image Tool and an SD-card written from the PC, as well as as an nbf-file with the correct checksum, for inclusion into a 'Programme A' package that people can install using their cradle. If you're lucky, whoever creates the installer you use to flash the Special Edition ROM into your device will make the flash utility self-extracting and use our new 'adaptROM' tool to make sure you never have to mess with model numbers, languages and checksums
many thanks

unlocking

G`day everyone,
I have just brought a new SX56 siemens from the US. I am in Aus and would like to use my existing provider. My problem is the SID is locked and I would love to get some help here.
I have tried XDAunlock.exe and received an error (error getting unlocked code). Any help would be great.
Rom Version : A.20.17 ENG
Rom Date : 05/15/03
Radio Version : A.20.10
Protocol Ver : 324e4
Model Number: PW10B1
I think you should be able to install developers special edition rom, this will unlock it automatically. Before doing so, back up your existing rom using sd card method, then you can go back to where you started but with an unlocked machine.

Thank you for replying so quick mate.
But using the developers special edition rom is something im afraid to get into if something goes wrong.
Also im not familar with compiling etc.
Then again I havent given special edition rom a chance.
Just not confident playing around with the rom.
Ps. Reading about XDAunlock.exe seems alot easier to manage and is my rom version to new to run with XDAunlock.exe?
thanks again cruisin-thru.
The XDA Manipulator will unlock a phone, if you can have a serial cable (Easily purchased - approx. $10).

Yes I know that the XDA Manipulator will unlock the phone but i read that, this can be of high risk. Also i havent read that anyone has the same rom version and used XDA Manipuilator.
You dont need to know a thing about compiling, just download the exe file, after doing sd backup. Run it on your pc and it will do its thing.

Edit: Oh and the version number is 4.01.16

this is the BEST post i've seen this year!!!
they realy should call it 2004 though, dont you think? lol
downloading now, will comment on it later.
Damn, has someone got a number we can enter into the box for D/L?
Oh, nevermind, nobody post their personal phone number or friend's phone numbers... there's an easy way  .
T-Mobile has an email service attached to their customer's mobile phone numbers, so it's [email protected]. So all you need to do is search google for @tmomail.net and you will find a lucky customer who has revealed their legit mobile phone number for your use .

Great - I've started to spread the word:

So, if I don't have an SD card and want to upgrade, will this work via ActiveSync?
My BootLoader is v6.22 and it seems that even with a borrowed SD card I cannot transfer any cooked (or original) ROM images after putting this 4.01.00 ENG T-Mobile ROM over the original - apparently I have to downgrade the BootLoader or something.
Does anyone know if this will work via ActiveSync with my BootLoader and current ROM version?
Thanks...
I've got it up and running, all seems fine. Yay for no more attenuated volume that we had with ATT .

You need the Wallaby bootloader patch, or (more dangerously) downgrade to wallaby 5.15. I did the downgrade which makes life easier, but it's up to you.
The $64,000 question - does this version have wireless modem?

The thread you point to says "For users with Wallaby Bootloader 5.17 version" - does this mean that you followed these instructions with a 6.22 BootLoader and it worked? If so, I'll grab another SD card and try again.
I believe it works the same for 6.22, but sorry I cannot be certain. I'm sure I've read somewhere where people have done it.
Thanks for the information - I'll keep digging around and see what I can find out. If I make any discoveries I'll post them in the forum, as I'm guessing there are many users out there in the same boat.

Advice On Upgrading My XDA 11i Please.

Yes as you can guess yet another newbie to all this stuff..... I a hoping that there is a nice XDA knowledgable person out there in Cyber land who can advise me on if its safe to upgarde my XDA IIi please.
My pda has this written in the device information:-
ROM version: 1.11.00 WWE
ROM Date: 01-27-05
Radio Version: 1.04.00
Protocol Version:1337.42
ExtROM Version: 1.11.162 WWE
I have downloaded from the XDA ftp ste this Program:-
Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed
A Friend has told me that they used this program and there unit worked a lot better than before, but also warned me to be very careful as you could very easily kill your xda. So I suppose my question is, can I use it to upgrade and if there are any dangers for me to aware of before having a go.
Sorry for my total lack of any knowledge about this but I really hope that there is someone who could advise me.
Many thanks
JG
Hi there
There is always a chance that things could go wrong - a power cut for instance.
However, I'm an IT Manager, and this was new to me last year too - I just read about peoples experiences and read and re-read the instructions....
The hardest thing was getting the XDA2i to go into programming mode - but that was because I didn't think it had the first time I did it.
Once that occurred it was fairly simple. Your heart is in your mouth when you reset it after it has finished being upgraded but it is well worth you doing it...

1. It's safe to up ROM to your XDA IIi. I have one and did upgrading many times.
2. Due to your device information, it is quite same as "Alpine_Ext-1.11.162_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed". Just as Pug and someone have informed: "O2 camera patch has no good quality", so Pug Remove this patch from Original Rom.
3. Just plug your XDA IIi into cradle, run MAUpgrade_noID.exe, follow the instructions and watch movie. After it finish, try to taste it yourself. It is easy as run setup.exe in your computer. And remember, if your upgrade fails, put your XDA IIi into bootloader mode (press Power, Action and Soft-Reset at same time), and do thing follow '3. Just plug ...' .
Have fun.
it did not fail on me, it just hung for a while, then i had to close it using task manager, then run it again, you MUST NOT TOUCH OR UNPLUG YOUR PHONE, before you run it again, it will say there is nothing on the phone then update the bios, i left it for 30mins before i worked that out, i was expecting a "cannot upgrade, flash failed" promte but it just hangs.
