Rick,
I have an O2 locked xda. Tried it with TIM and Omnitel in
Italy. My xda recognised a GPRS network (with one of the two
operators, can't remember which) but could not connect via GPRS,
had to resort to GSM.
Mitnick,
You can buy an xda from O2 Germany which I think (you will need
to check) is not SIM locked. Visit

Hungry,
my O2 is unlocked, but nonetheless it wouldn't work.
Your situation is different because you are roaming when
you're here.

From: martin

hi!
we use mdas, which do work with gprs in italy.
we also purchased an unlocked xda for use in austria. which at
first did not work with the
biggest provider here (A1 Mobilkom). they found some network
settings they could tweak
and the xda now works with their gprs.
the xda (gprs) always worked with ONE (no changes required)
before A1 found which settings to adapt, we gave our xda to
t-mobile and they somehow
flashed the phone-rom so it would work in the t-mobile gprs net
(thus also in italy).
so it boils down to the following:
** either the provider allows the xda access to its gprs network
up front (like ONE in austria)
** or the provider is willing to change settings (like A1
Mobilkom)
** or you flash your xda to make it and mda and use a t-mobile
network (11 countries at present)
cheerio,
martin

Hi
I'm using a new unlocked xda on WIND in Rome. Phone works fine
but can't get the gprs to work.
The settings seem to keep adjusting the baud rate down to 19200
automatically.
I've added the code string provided by WIND customer support but
to no avail.
ie
+cgdcont=1,"IP","internet.wind"
All other settings I've adapted from their online manual linking
an iPaq 3870 to gprs with an T68i.
Support with WIND are unfamiliar with the xda device.
The failure message reads "Unable to connect for an unknown
reason" etc
I'd be glad of any help if anyone's cracked it!
Cheers

XDA for Italy
Hello,
I have one XDA from september 2002 and a used to get some of them for my friends and custumers in Italy.
I know about GPRS problems only with TIM, the XDA works fine with others networks and i'm able to go on the Internet, send mail etc.
Now i'm going to try Aruba's GPRS flate, a 24 hours gprs conection for 28 euro per mounth and i'll see how and if the XDA works.

Really works with TIM?
Hi Rick! So with the ROM upgrade TIM GPRS should Work?
Please, can you tell me how to set the GPRS authentication (PAP?)?
Let me know!

Thanks in advance!

To select PAP...
...you need a fairly recent version.
Start\Settings\Connections\GPRS Authentication
Select PAP or CHAP (default)

Re-locking when upgrading ?
Hi Rick,
just to know ...my XDA is unlocked ...is it safe to upgarde to ROM to 3.16 (I need it working with TIM) or not ...I mean, I read that someone has his XDA locked again by the rom upgrade ...
And ...which ROM should I donwload (my XDA comes from UK)? ...could you please send me a link or ...a tip ...or a mail?))
...I downloaded this two files here but I'm not sure these are the right files:

If your XDA is unlocked using the manipulator or by getting the unlock code from official sources it will not re-lock on upgrade. If you unlocked using the weird timing-trick, it will lock when you upgrade.

XDA developer Peter Poelman >
thanks for the input ...but I bought it used and unlocked so ...is there a way to know if it has been unlocked with the manipulator or with any other trick? (or maybe if it was manufactured unlocked)?

GPRS TIM Italia Italy WIND
Hi me again!
Just to post that I couldn't connect to GPRS with WIND and their telephone consultants were useless, - hadn't even heard of the xda!
I have begun the transfer to TIM - it takes two weeks, but you can change networks here in Italy while keeping your own phone number! Very nifty and consumer-friendly!
I hope I'll have better luck with TIM. If anyone can post here the TIM settings I see they'd make a lot of people happy!
Thanks

Step by step configuration for TIM - Italy
Here you are the settings I use to use GPRS with TIM in Italy, step by step. Hope it helps.
New connection ->
Modem type = Cellular Line (GPRS)
Baud rate 19200
Advanced ->
TCP/IP
Use server-assigned IP address
Use Software compression
Use IP heder compression
Name Servers
Use server-assigned addresses
Next ->
Access point name = uni.tim.it
Finish
Goto Dial Locations menu -> Dialing Patterns
Put a "G" in all the three fields
Goto Connections -> GPRS Authentication and select "PAP"
When prompt give you phone number as username (without "+39") and as password the one you chosed when you've registerd in www.i.tim.it

XDA use in Italy
I was in Italy last month and was able to use my GPRS connecttion with TIM in Siena, Florence, Roma and Venizia without any problem. I did have to reset the phone when in a new city to get it to connect. The service was very slow. I am using a T-Mobile branded phone and T-mobile (USA) SIM.
p.s. I also got the GPRS to work on one of the high-speed trains too. (near Flornece)

May you help me?
I have bought a Pocket PC Phone edition in USA, unlocked, GSM 900 and 1900.
I use it in Italy with SIM Card of the TIM. The GSM works very well.
I don't succeed in making to work the GPRS in Rome, despite the suggested configuration.
The MobilePhone comes with the ROM 3.14.40 ENG. But doesn't appear the possibility to do: GPRS Authentication and select PAP. There will be a new upgrade 3.15.15 like in Europe (German) alse for USA Mobile Phone edition?
There and some possibilities of software or upgrade of the ROM so that can work the GPRS or necessarily I have to purchase an European o2xda (in UK or Germany)?
Thanks for the answer.

I know for sure that the authentication mode for TIM is PAP and earlier version of xda came out only with CHAP, but I don't if this stack comes with the radio ROM or with the software ROM.
I have this config:
-ROM 3.14.13 ENG
-ROM date 10/09/02
-Radio version 4.14
-Protocol version 32S54
so seems that you have a newer version (or is it a typo-error?).
I suggest you to find a suitable ROM looking in the forum under the topic "ROM upgrade"; beware that, according to the xda-developers, :!: you cannot upgrade a European xda with a US ROM :!: .... I don't know if the opposite is possible...

It is with pride and utter insanity that we announce the release
of XDA manipulator. The XDA manipulator allows one to unlock SID
and GID locks, reset the call duration counters and change the
IMEI of the XDA/MDA/SX56/...
You'll need a serial cable. See the page for disclaimer and

Even without this tool, some of these things are pretty easy
once you know the trick. For instance, if you just put the XDA
in bootloader mode and enter "dualser", followed by
"AT%UREG?3FE00C,4", you will see the SID unlock code. More news
about all the things we've learned will be available soon on our

Subject: Unlock: serial only (for now)
From: XDA developers
Date: 11 Jan, 2003 20:11:06
At present, we do not have a method of taling to the modem once
Windows CE (a.k.a. Pocket PC) is running. This has to do with
the fact that TAPI, a part of Windows, has opened the port, and
one can only talk to the modem "through" TAPI.
We're working on this problem, unlocking being only one of the
reasons. No predictions as to the when, so if you wish to use
Manipulator's functionality today, you must get a serial cable.
You can issue some of the commands that this tool is issuing "by
hand", but again, only when using a serial cable. This is what
we meant when we talked about "dualser": this is a command for
the bootloader which is entered through the serial port."

Yes it is: Put the device in bootloader mode, and connect it using a serial cable. On your PC, connect to the serial port using a terminal program set at 115200-n-8-1. At the command prompt enter "dualser" and wait for the modem command interpreter to come up. Then enter:

I wish to get to know my XDA better and you guys seem to know alot. Although I may not know much about programming and computers, I can feel that XDA-developers have acheived alot. Thats how much you guys should know what you have acomplished. Excellent WORK!!!!
As for my questions, please be patient with me and hope you will able to answer them. Thanks.
I dont get what you mean by simlock? The way i understand simlock, it is when you entered your sim pincode three times wrongly and it gets locked. Is this the same meaning? In my country Singapore, all we have to do is call our provider and they will give us an unlock code which is free of charge. Do other providers in other countries charge you for doing that?
Regarding the Simlock. With the XDA manipulator, I can unlock any simcard?? ie, any simcard that has been locked after 3 failures of incorrect password entry.
Whats the meaning of IMEI? Isnt it like an identification for the phone? If you change it, what are the implications of it? Wouldnt O2 think your phone is fake since the IMEI is not one that was produced by them?
What is ROM? I thought RAM was what I should be concerned about when upgrading. Please try to help me on this one please.
BTW, Why the hell O2 didnt employ you to develop the XDA!! Dumbasses.
can anyone tell me if they have been sucessful in unlocking

SIMlock is the lock that locks your phone (and not the SIM) to a specific (set of) providers. This is so that they can subsidize the phone and be 'sure' you stay until the end of your contract. You can always buy (at outrageous prices), what is called an 'unlock code' to get an 'unlocked' phone.
This is not the same as what happend when you type your PIN wrong 3 times. This indeed locks the SIM, and you need what is called a 'PUK code' to get back in. You got your PUK when you got the SIM, and the provider can give it to you again if you lose it.

Whats the meaning of IMEI? Isnt it like an identification for the phone? If you change it, what are the implications of it? Wouldnt O2 think your phone is fake since the IMEI is not one that was produced by them?

IMEI stands for International Mobile Equipement Identitfier and is a hardware serial number tied to the phone, and transmitted with every call. Whether you attract attention with a chnaged IMEI depends on whether you choose an IMEI in the same range or not. Nobody really checks IMEIs, not even against a blacklist of stolen phones, as was originally intended by the GSM MoU. They use IMEI to track who is using what phones, in case people under investigation switch SIMs.

Your operating system software resides in ROM, your own files and running programs are in RAM.

Probably. The AT command (to be issued at 115200 bps in bootloader mode after entering 'dualser' is probably something like AT%LCKGID 1,xxxxxxxx. But maybe you first have to tell it what to lock to. (But then again, maybe not).
Feel free to play around, you will probably be able to use the Manipulator to get back in...
Oh, Baby!
I just received my serial cable from Moonlight Tech twenty minutes ago, made a cup of tea, put my T-Mobile XDA into bootloader mode, connected the serial cable, started the XDA manipulator, and voila! The unlock button stood out for me to press!!!! Unlocked my phone, reset my call life counter, amazing, and all in less than five minutes!
I got on a bit of a trip and unlocked my colleague's O2 64MB XDA as well, so we're both happy. Both had bootloader Wallaby v5.20, but I also performed it on an AT&T Siemens SX56 that had been sitting in my drawer for a while.
Popped in SIM cards from AT&T, Cingular, Orange, and Vodaphone (all pre-paid) and they all work!
Thanks to the hard-working guys who came up with this tool!!!!

A multitasking bug (maybe emergency call bug ?)
You must have old rom (tested on 3.02German),telefon number, that
not answer for a 2-3 minutes and good timing to defeat
simlock.Insert sim,if you want allow new sim cofiguration, cancel
entering simlock code(SIM-sperre).GSM part is off.Try to call
number.Cancel entering simlock code.GSM part is off.Soft reset
XDA,GSM part is off.Switch GSM part ON(Antenne simbol) and
NOW-perfect timing-observe GSM part status icon ,when Yx changes
to Y QUICK call last dialed number wait ringing 2-3 minutes
until you see error message ,,Schwerer Anwendungsfehler,,(Heavy
App error)
Program:device_identification.exe.Ausnahme(exeption)0x00000001
Adresse:01f8b454.Hit OK ,hang of and ...VOILA you on new
network.Newer roms dont work...maybe is possible to write small
TSR to kill device_identification.exe when it come out?

You can update GSM rom (tested on 4.01-4.16),only CE rom must be
old (3.02).

Congratulations!
We're curious: when you've gotten the phone to accept this new
card, do you need to do this again every time you reset? Or
every time you turn the phone off?
It's a strange bug, that's for sure...

hi !
i tried it, but it doesnt worked so far.
i am not shure, maybe our german fixedlines doesnt
understand "not answering under 2-3 minutes" (grrr,
i need an alternative number .....)
i tried it like the description, but after it rings 17 times
the display gets dark, after a few seconds it lits up, dark
again. i keep it awake with a click inside of a white field
and the last thing what happend, was the antenna-symbol
changed after this to a symbol like a "telephone receiver"
just this window, nothing happend then
no error message .... ;(
may some can give me an advise ...
greetings

For Allard:
Check your "rom". Could it be a higher verson than 3.02?
Maybe Laisvunas has any ideas?
For XDA dev. team:
I have used the bug on my friends xda to... 8) He is as happy
as I am!
But yes, it is a temparary fix. Every time i do a soft reset,
lose contact with my provider or turn the phone off, I am asked
to enter a simlock code...
BUT IT WORKS!

Does anyone know of any apps which can crash a selected process,
this may be an easier way of replicating the bug.
I've tried using Easy Close to terminate the
device_identification process, but, I presume because it closes
cleanly, it just switches the phone off again. I might keep
trying whilst making a call, maybe that will work.
I'm using 3.02 ENG bios, tried the method suggested in this
forum once, but didn't manage to make the app crash.
I tried to get the unlock legitimately yesterday, and O2 said
they couldnt do it until my PAYG card was 12 months old, instead
they (or the girl on the phone) suggested I go to a dodgy petrol
station in Manchester!!! - wonder if that is they're official
line on the subkject!

Hi Guys,
tried several times, seems that I misunderstood how to do it.
First of all, do I have to use an O2 simcard or the D2, which is
the one I want to work with ?
I tried with both, but the steps didn't work. I'm sure I did a
mistake.
Pls help

For Zorro:
I am in Norway, and O2 dont have a service here. I use the sim
from another provider. Dont know if it matters.
I have allso "discovered" that I need to call a number where it
just rings. If the line I call is buissy or somone picks up the
phone it does not work...

tw: get someone to solder a serial cable for you: it's not that
hard, and all the information you need is on this site. And you
really want to upgrade from 3.00.01: it's full of bugs. We
suggest upgrading to the Irish 3.14 version mentioned elsewhere

Which update for business user is best..?

Hi,
I'm successfully using an unlocked UK o2 xda in South Africa (GSM and GPRS work fine). My xda is on ROM 3.02.00 ENG, RSU 4.01. I see that o2 has new updates out on http://www.o2.co.uk/productsservices/xda/romupgradedownload/0,,170,00.html which is ROM 3.14.13, RSU 4.16 (boasting 33% faster GPRS, etc) I have read through this forum to try and ascertain which of the numerous updates out there is best for me.. I see though that the o2 update is prone to signal related problems, which is bad for me as I use my xda as a business tool. Are there any recommendations or comments?
Thank you!
Hello Jus
How did you manage to update the ROM and upon upgrade did you have to make any specific country or Network settings?
Dont upgrade the GSM ROM. highly probable that the phone wont connect to the network.

I've just screwed up my iPDA's radio stack by upgrading it to 4.21.00 (O2 upgrade). :?
I really need someone to help me getting out of this mess! Does anyone owns a Bouygues iPDA with the original radio stack ROM and who can gently pass it on?
Merci les Frenchies...
Hi,
You got problem with the 4.21.00 O2 upgrade ?
Why would you re-flash your XDA with the old originial Bouygues rom ?
Rather put a kitchened Rom from Jeff site (a WM2003 based rom or a 3.17.03 based rom as well)
It works great on my Bouygues Ipda ...

Thank U for your answer zendrui!
Yes I got a problem with the 4.21.00 RSU... I don't any signal at all...
My previous Radio version had a weird numering: R3... something instead of the usual "4.xx.xx"... Do you think there could be several hardware design of the iPDA?
By the way if someone has the original Bouygues RSU, please let me know!

You know what...
I found the solution to my problem by myself...!
For those who encountered the same issue:
1. Bootload the PDA (hold "On/Off" button and soft reset)
2. Enter the GSM module test menu by pushing the Calendar button
3. In the menu, select this sequence:
- GSM TURN ON
- GSM RESET
- GSM 900 / 1800
In fact the RSU upgrade will kind of resetup the GSM module (or turn it off), which is apparently not suitable for the French network. So one has to set the GSM module with the right parameters...
I guess this is applicable to other countries as well.
I am so happy!
Hey in the menu I noticed options "GSM 1900" along with "GSM 900" and "GSM 1800"... Do you think the XDA is actually TRI-BAND?
Well pleased for you if it works.
Personnally I put a WM2003 4.00.05 rom and it works well.
I also saved the original rom form bouygue if needed (but it is really a too old rom)

TMobile GPRS (Dutch) setup ??

Hello all,
I tried to setup the TMobile "web and walk" GPRS stuff, but without success.
I get a nice GPRS logo (it's connected) but when going to a webpage it says "can't connect/locate the page".
Using my (local) Wifi connection it works fine, but when on the road I would like to use my GPRS connection...
Note : I'm looking for the Dutch settings...
Thanx in advance,
Michael 8)
Hey Michael,
As far as I know this is the cab file you need to install for the T-mobile settings.
Good luck.
Hey Panja,
Ok, will try it.... Is't that loaded during (re)Flashing the MDa Vario ??
I just reflashed it using the latest (found here) Dutch TMobile 1.6.2.2 ROM (dated 1/11/05)...
Thanx for your help.
Michael 8)
Edit : Tried it, helaas without success !!!??? Anyone who has GPRS active and running in the Netherlands for TMobile ???
Thanx again for you help !!
Michael 8)
Its a cab file that was in the extended rom of a Dutch T-Mobile rom.
Its official and should have all settings for Dutch T-Mobile users.
Hey Panja,
Thanx for your answers and suggestions, but I'm still not able to get a webpage or email when connected using GPRS (tMobile)....
Using Wifi all is ok....
Anyone in the Netherlands who is using TMobile GPRS on his/her MDA Vario can tell me the settings... On the TMobile website they don't even show the MDA Vario settings !!!!??? (only from MDA to MDA II and SDA).
Note : I tried all of them without success...
Thanx for your help and understanding
Michael 8)
The gprs settings are very simple for Dutch TMO.
Just create a 'Cellular line (gprs)' connection with 'access point' internet. That's all no user/password etc., if it doesn't work it might be your radio.
Cheers, M
Hey oltp,
Looks like I was thinking to technical to establish a GPRS connection, and I was looking at other (TMobile GPRS pages/set-up's).
This did the trick !!!! So simple !!!???
Thanx again for your help.

check oltp posting (above) on Jan 09, 2006, you should see the gprs settings for t-mob NL.
if you stil have some trouble go to the xda-developer ftp site from wiki xda-developer. There's a pdf file for HTC wizard settings for dutch operators.
cheers,
thanks for that. Couldn't find the .pdf file but did find a .cab file with settings which I'll try.
