Broken HD 8 screen - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I accidentally stepped on my Fire HD 8 and broke the screen. All I can see now is just random color lights and cracks. I bought it two years ago. It is very likely HD 8 2020 (10th generation). I think the only thing I can do is replace the LCD screen. But I need to go to the setting to confirm what generation it is in order to buy the LCD replacement. Of course, I can send it to a professional repair shop. But that will probably cost me the price of a used HD 8 (or perhaps a new HD 8). Just wondering if anyone out there has any suggestions for me.

[Q] Cracked nexus 7 screen, some functionality.

This past weekend I had to go through horrifying experience having to deal my nexus 7's screen cracking. Long story short, my girlfriend, younger brother and I were hanging out in my room, I had left my nexus 7 on the left side of my bed and got up to get something in my room, mean while, my obvious younger brother decided it would be a good idea to sit exactly where I had left my nexus 7...if only he had stayed in the chair that was in my room. Well, my nexus 7 happened to be facing front side up and when he sat on my beautiful tablet, the screen cracked... the 50 dollars Gumdrop Drop Tech Series Case I had invested in proved to be no match to his rear end.
I sat there quite silent for a couple minutes, no words to say, it was just as time itself had paused to morn for my loss. Well anyhow, I ordered a brand spanking new 32GB nexus 7 last night and I'm expecting it to arrive tomorrow . I was fiddling around with my nexus 7 and I managed to enable "show touches" in the developer options by attaching a mouse to my device. I noticed that top left corner of the screen gave touch feed back.
My question is why the small portion of the touch screen responds to touch when the majority of the screen doesn't, this anomaly (from reading various forum posts, the nexus 7 screen isn't suppose to respond to touch once the screen is cracked) leaves me pondering if there was something I could do to make the other portion of the screen to work. I was originally looking into screen replacement options, but from what I read and saw first hand, it's better to buy a whole new unit (like I had mentioned I had done in the earlier text) than to purchase a brand new digitizer. The other option would be to find a bricked nexus 7 on the internet and salvage the screen, and trying to find a low priced bricked nexus 7 on the internet is like trying to find a needle in a hay stack.
Now, I'm a college student (majoring in Computer Networking System Administrations ) and blew 3/4 of my savings for a new unit (I'm poor!). If there is no financially feasible method for replacing the screen enabling being able sell the device for higher price, how much do you folks think I could sell it for? Keep in mind, my cracked nexus 7 is 16GB model and is unlocked (rooted) and is in pretty the good shape despite the cracked screen, the actual display has not been damaged, it's just touch digitizer that is not working properly.
Thanks for reading my lengthy post/ramble
So I take it your brother who broke it won't be compensating you for breaking your tablet? I would be pissed, he should at least pay for some of the cost of the replacement.

Well he's actually going compensate me with 50 bucks so that's nice.
Hi, I have exactly the same problem and had the same idea. If i can calibrate the digitizer to exactly 50% of the original dimensions I could use the working area of the screen to operate the device. Did you find a way to do this?

no offence intended but anyone who breaks my tablet, family or not would be compensating me 100% plus a srry beer thrown in.

Dead Pixel warning

so I ordered the 6-pack (buy 5, get one free deal), and as I was setting each of them up, I noticed that three of them had dead pixels (one of which had 2). I contacted Amazon and they are sending me new ones immediately.
so really just an FYI, before you give them as a gift, be sure to start them up and make sure there are no dead pixels. the process of returning them is very easy - I chatted online with someone, they placed the order and created a return slip for me.
I went through this process day one. Watch out, because when they sent my replacement, it showed as a refurb in my order history, and said it on the box when I got it. I didn't send it back though, and here is why: The screen had no dead pixels, and I assume for an item to be refurbed it must have had someone's eyes on it to inspect it. My issue with these is that I am not sure the new ones being built even get inspected. Mine had 2 individual dead pixels and a cluster of dead pixels near the bottom right corner. They should have been obvious given any inspection of the device with screen on. Big quality control concerns for the screen at least in my opinion.
Same here. Ordered Amaozn Fire 5th Gen.
First one that came had 1 dead pixel.
1st replacement had again 1 dead pixel.
2nd replacement - 2 dead pixel
3rd replacement - 6-7 dead pixel one of which in the middle - large spot, maybe 2-3 neighbor pixels
now I'm waiting for the 4th replacement. Amazon support dais that this time they will inspect it before sending.
2 out of 4 displays have display bleeding. (grayish spots on edges caused from not even lightning)
Obviously Amazon did made huge sacrifice in terms of display. Still except the one that I got with 6-7 dead pixels all other are perfectly usable in normal conditions and still worth the 50 bucks. At the end of the day you don't watch static black images on the tablet... I bought it for my 3y old so probably it will not last long anyway.
I just noticed a dead pixel on mine, but this thread is encouraging. At least they're replacing them. I didn't expect high end parts for $50
The 5th fire is with OK display. Just minor display bleeding. I think they wasted more money on shipping than I spend on the device.
2/3 of mine had obvious dead pixels. replacement was easy and apologies were profuse...
I Ordered 2 during last Thanksgiving. One had Dead Pixel and other was good.
Requested replacement and received brand new one and it didn't had any Dead Pixel.
Got my fire a couple of days ago, and last night noticed there was a fleck of dust under the screen. Asked for a replacement, and booted it up, had a dead pixel. They're sending me another one. FWIW, both tablets are 5.1.1.
I've had two with dead pixels and going for a third now.. Let's hope third time is the charm. Sad I bet most people just don't notice.

I have 4 stuck (effectively "dead") pixels on one of several early build devices. Only noticeable when device is booting and with screen test apps. Not worth the hassle to return.
Meh. I hear ya, but its something I notice, and quite frankly I don't want to normalize the notion that companies can deliver a substandard product and its OK.

Sure, if it bugs you gotta act on it. Doubtful the relative trickle of returns for this specific anomaly will yield a corporate behavior change.
yeah 2 out of 3 of ones i bought at best buy had a dead pixel and they all get image burn in /ghosting issues
i have one with 1 dead pixel and that one has the least image burn /ghosting also it is the only one on 5.0.1 ,but that is my fault, i accidentally updated one of the other ones
The one I'm using right now..It doesn't have dead pixels, but every now and then the colors will get completely messed up, like it's on acid, and I have to squeeze the edges to fix it. The other one I have is fine, but I'm not really using it until this one breaks.
I had a problem with a few dead pixels, contacted support and received a replacement without any problems. It was refurbished, but looked brand new. No complaints for a $35 tablet.
I have 4 dead pixels. Those are white color dot. I turn the brightness down to get rid of bright white color dot showing. Very notice with it turn down. I still using the 16gb tablet. This is the newer tablet with a orange back.
Had a boat load of dead pixels (8 or 9) in a 16GB Kindle Fire. Called up Amazon and they shipped out a new one immediately. NO hassle at all.

New touch digitizer + LCD display

I dropped my old first generation Nexus 7 and the display cracked. At first I thought to throw it away but on second thought I checked how much a new display would cost. I noticed that I could could order a new one at eBay under 25 euros. (Including postage to Finland.) Are these legitimate working displays or would I just waste time and money?

Broke Nexus 7 Grouper, what should I do?

So I was running event0 on my grouper when I tried to move it and it fell off of my desk. The screen cracked and now half of the touchscreen is wonked. I own 3 other tablets and a screen replacement is about 50$ AUD and would take a couple weeks to get here. The only reason I haven't sold this device is so I can finish a project I am doing with it, and the lack of touch screen doesn't quite hinder the project (yet). Should I just shell out 50$ for a screen (Not much for me), or should I wait until I absolutely need one?
There are two on Swappa now ($40 & $60). Might make more sense to just replace instead of repair?
Or in the meanwhile, use a usb-otg cable with a keyboard and mouse. Than when you need it, replace the screen or device.

Kindle Fire HD 8 (8th Gen) Screen Replacement?

I've been all over the usual places I've ordered new screens for tablets and phones and can't find a single source for the 8th gen model of the HD 8.. Screen is cracked due to a drop, and I'm not sure if the LCD was damaged or not, but, where can I even find any replacements for 8th Gen?
You can find the LCD model and search from Google or eBay

I know this is a old thread but I had the same problem and turns out the 7th gen screen are fully compatible with 8th gen.
