No Mic input on Idoing head unit for 2017 Subaru WRX STI - Android Head-Units

Forgive me if this has been asked / answered before, but I did lots of searching and didn't find it, potentially due to my head unit being known under another name?
The Car and Setup:
* 2017 WRX STI with Harmon Kardon system
* Stock except for the head unit
* Bought the IDoing Head Unit 2015-2021 WRX / STI for Harmon Kardon (from WRXDaily)
* Followed Smeedia and Boost&Shutter video guides to swap out the old head unit and install the new one.
* Ran external mic up the A-pillar
* CAM-BUS decoder is installed
* HU shows as sprd ums512_1h10_natv
* CPU is UIS7862 Octa-Core 2.0 GHz, with 4GB Memory 64GB Storage
* MCU 2021.04.26 15:40:55 PSTAR_53_L6315_G23P48F64_V:1.0
* Android 10, Build number QP1A.190711.020
* I believe this is an FYT unit, more info here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...unisoc-ums512-q-a-mods-tips-firmware.4396339/
Troubleshooting Attempted:
* Triple-checked that the cables were all plugged in correctly across the whole link and had no pinches
* Rebooted the head unit, re-connected the phone
* Ensured that all other functionality works (Android Auto Wired and Wireless, sound, backup camera, etc)
* Tested mic with a variety of apps, both with android auto and the head unit standalone.
* Tested with a variety of methods of activating the mic
* Looked for software option to enable it, didn't find it.
* All work resulted in the mic not appearing to pick up anything
* Went to Factory menu in settings (PW is 3368) and enabled the 'mic' option; no change
So what I'm wondering is if there is a software option needed to enable the mic, or I'm dealing with a hardware issue?
I suppose I could yank the mic out and plug it into another device, but before I do so, if anyone with some experience here could redirect me, what would be very helpful. Thank you in advance, and let me know what additional information you need.
Update: Added what I've learned about the head unit in case anyone else searches this post, and additional troubleshooting attempted.

Test the mic with PC or laptop first, Android may not register mic at all if mulfunctioned.

Thank you! I'll try this out; not looking forward to taking the dash apart again
Update: Haven't yet had a chance to test the mic with another device; poor weather + busy schedule + lack of desire to take dash apart have delayed. I do have a local expert who is checking if he has a 'known good' mic that I can also try

No need to take apart anything just connect switch / end odf a mic to a laptop while in a car (make a joint or if you have usb 4 pin cable ready)

The external mic connects at the back of the head unit
So there is no way to plug it into another device without pulling the dash

Disconnect it from head unit if possible, and test. It must disconnect at the back it is only connected thru jack .

Ok, I've torn up my dash again. thank you to everyone who gave me suggestions on the mic. Here are the results of my testing. Device details again for reference: iDoing FYT unit UIS7862 MCU 2021.04.26 15:40:55 PSTAR_53_L6315_G23P48F64_V:1.0
Validated External Mic by removing the 3.5mm jack and plugging it into the 3.5mm jack on both a microsoft surface tablet and an old Moto Z play
On the moto Z play, the phone was able to register voice via google assistance. The phone is on its last legs and died, so I switched to the surface
On the surface, I made a test call to a friend in discord, changed from the surface internal mic to the iDoing external mic during the call; friend could hear me and noticed the audio change. I also made 2 recordings, one with the iDoing external mic and one with the Surface internal mic. They sounded different but I could hear both
fully disconnected the harness from the back of the iDoing head unit and downloaded a voice recorder app directly to the head unit (phone was not paired)
Recording 1: Internal mic, "back MIC switch" in Factory menu set to "OFF - Front Mic"
Recording 2: internal mic, "back MIC switch in Factory menu set to "ON - back Mic"
firmly plugged in the harness in the correct spot (it was fully seated) and re-connected the external mic
Recording 3: external mic, "back MIC switch" in Factory menu set to "OFF - Front Mic"
Recording 4: external mic, "back MIC switch in Factory menu set to "ON - back Mic"
zero of the recordings picked up any sounds.
So my conclusions are that one, the external mic does work, and 2, either the iDoing head unit doesn't understand mic input, I have failed to enable it properly, or BOTH the harness and the internal mic are dead.
Any advice?

Last resort - use app called LESSER AUDIO SWITCH , download and install from Google Play store , there inside app you can set input and output for speakers and mic

Thank you! I will try that. This HU already has a method of boosting mic gain; did it to the max and no change.
The other idea I'm going to try is a USB mic, since I do have USB inputs

I tried this, and the only option in the app was the internal mic. Still no dice
I am suspecting a VERY strange software issue. Any other ideas?

This is the main setting I've been toggling; I'll get a list of the other settings later today

Ok i literally couldn't find another setting that was remotely relevant.
This thing is borked at the software level. Probably gonna return

Why is front mic off ?

UPDATE:
IDoing finally got back to me. They claim there is a bluetooth bug causing this issue, and gave me 2 files to "update" the driver. They sent me videos of someone plugging in UBS and the update just 'happening'. I doubt it's that simple. Has anyone performed this update, and if so, could they advise me on how to do so properly? Thanks in advance

I think you must import those drivers from factory settings, there is import button.

Thanks! I tried this; successfully updated bluetooth, but no change in the mic. I am not surprised.

Eonon Android 4.4.4 head unit - BUZZING MICROPHONE!

Hi just received an "EONON" android head unit that I bought on ebay.
It is the KLD RK3188 Android 4.4.4 version with no DVD player.
The unit is great, except for one major issue. The microphone is useless, both the internal and external mic produce very loud continuous buzzing both in phone calls and in Android apps.
I saw some others had some issues similar to this on other units, but I have not seen anyone mention this on this specific one.
Does anyone know of a fix for this?
I have tried a usb mic, but I can't get the device to use it as default.
Any advice would be appreciated!!
Its not an Eonon, they are just re-sellers, its a Klyde unit, they are all the same basic unit apart from screen size and front design and whether they are dual or quad core, read the main HuiFei thread, specifically the first page for a solution to the problem (You DONT want to use a USB mic as it probably contains a sound card so ALL Android sound will be diverted to it).

Thanks for the tip.
I actually was able to fix it by following that solution. I removed capacitor C32 and connected an external mic directly to the bluetooth module.
Phone calls are great now, Android is still using the internal mic with the crappy audio, but it seems like it would be difficult to fix and it works at least well enough for some basic voice commands which is all I need.
Hi
Burnaby BC, is your unit KLD ?
if so can you explain what you did ?
I understand that you have to remove capacitor C32 but what I don't understand is how did you do the second part(connect external mic directly to the BT module.)
thanks

Yes my unit is a Klyde (KLD) unit.
Look at C32, it should be next to the bluetooth module (unfortunately I don't have a picture).
Follow the trace that connects C32 to the input on the bluetooth module.
Once you remove C32, connect the microphone positive lead (+) to that input.
Then connect the microphone ground/negative (-) lead to ground or a case screw.
This will fix the bluetooth phone call audio.

how to use the AUX port on the Android head unit?

Anybody knows how to use the AUX port to play music through the head unit?
Hi, I have the same doubt here. I bought a pure Android unit (still trying to find out which make and model is, as it's unbranded, with RK3188A chip, but not matching any MCU listed on the HuiFei wiki page), and I see that I can only use the dual zone for DVD while navigating (IGO) on the head unit. I mean, I have no PIP functionality (not a big issue), but the dual is not working as expected. I can only send video to rear monitors if it's played from the DVD. No USB, SD, BT, etc music or video files seem to be allowed to be sent through the AUX out port. And I'm only allowed to use navigation app while DVD is played on rear monitors... No radio, no USB, SD, etc video or audio files.
My previous unit is a WinCE supporting really well all this functions, but unfortunately due to a battery power loss, it only starts in recovery mode (expecting to load some firmware from SD card), and I cannot find any FW valid for it. And this pure Android is unable to do it, so I'm investigating to come up with a solution (it's the main reason I bought the pure Android unit).
Anyone knows any option? I think this could be done via software, but maybe I'm wrong.
Thanks in advance, it's really appreciated.

you'll need a 3.5mm/2.5mm male to 2 RCA cable, connect this cable to your MP3 or someting and the AUX IN L and AUX IN R cables ,open the AV IN app on the head unit, then you can listen to the music through your head unit

So, you cannot play music from a friend's phone and use tomtom (or any app) in the meantime?
There is any possibility to have AUX-IN audio and any navigation app in the meantime?
Thank you,

You just bought the wrong device.
Nearly all units with DVD support only video/audio from this drive, nothing else.
All units without integrated DVD can play anything from anywhere, even from any USB-DVD.
From my understanding this cannot be changed...
May be possible by deactivating the DVD by pulling out the connection to the main board.... I donĀ“t know, needs to be tested.

Where do you read that out of his posting? You always can send the AUX player to the background and can use navigation.
By the way... for what reason did you activate the donate button? Did you create any helpful software to ask for donation?

Ah, someone said it was. What is it?
I don't know if this applies to all firmware, but on some firmware, you either see the AUX or the Front Camera app icon. In the settings, when the front camera is activated, the AUX program icon changes to a front camera. If you deactivate the front camera then the AUX icon appears and I believe the sound source input is also made active in addition to the camera. On mine, the option is under Factory Settings and is named "Front View" on can be toggled on or off.
I have a TEyes SPro 4/64 which is an s9853i FYT unit. You should check the connection diagram for your head unit to see which pins/connectors are for AUX video and audio.

Interesting so I can't use my dash cam and AUX?
Not sure. Try it and see what happens. Maybe your unit is different.
If both your dash cam and AUX use the same inputs, then I would guess that it's not possible.
Best to try and maybe follow-up with your vendor/seller/manufacturer.
I have a similar problem. I m trying to install an reverse camera. I have connected the orange "reversing" wire but when I am in reverse I get a "no signal error". What's the difference between video in and cam in connectors. Do you know what the pin out of this connector is because the rca female cables are not installed and I m trying all possible combinations in order to connect the video in and grnd cables from the male rca. Thanks

Seicane S6920 (Android 7 head unit) microphone and antenna issues

Hi everyone, I tried searching, I'm very sorry if I missed it. The one we have is the typical quad core, 16GB storage / 2GB RAM unit with Android 7.1 pre-installed, running on a PX3.
We just installed this last week, and we love it, but we have a couple of issues.
I have a microphone wrinkle that seems different than other posts. I don't use the mic much, and right now, I don't want to install an external. The mic clearly works for the bluetooth phone dialer (I put my phone outside the car to verify that the head unit mic was being used), but I get nothing at all for any other app (OK Google, OK Waze, a voice recorder app I downloaded to test, etc).
There had been mention in threads I searched of going into the factory settings menus / independent volume levels, but I see menu options only for adjusting volume levels to speakers (radio, apps, etc), but nothing for the mic. And obviously it's not zeroed out because it works with the bluetooth dialer. I asked the seller (Seicane) and they are looking into it. Any thoughts? Just to be clear, again, I just want to know about getting the internal one seen for other apps (mostly to be able to use OK Google), I know there are options to splice in an external mic... and we'll cross that when we come to it.
Also, we installed into my 2010 VW Eos... has anyone connected the VW diversity antenna lead to this stereo, can you recommend the right adapter, since this is the only piece that does not seem to have been included with the head unit that we need?
The only other thing I'm trying to figure out right now is how to stop it from going to a hazard icon (because I don't have a backup cam) whenever I go into reverse. It sounds like what I need to do is root the device and delete the APK for the reverse cam, or else it sounds like cutting a wire is also an option, I just haven't tried either, yet.
Thank you for looking!
i have a Seicane, 2 actually, the older 6.0 unit and the newer 7.1.2 unit with PX3:
https://youtu.be/MWVsNWZjeCQ
You shouldn't have to splice anything for an external mic? Did it not come with one? there should be a hole to plug in? That being said, I have not tested it without the external mic, but I definitely can get OK Google to work with the External Mic. Next time I take it apart, I'll try the internal only.
as far as the backup came, did you look in Extra Settings? or Factory Settings? I do have a backup cam, so I want it on, but I think there is an option to turn that off somewhere.
Edit to add - I also started a Seicane subreddit:

Hi, I'm sorry, external radio antenna (not mic). The car has something that looks like maybe a twin FAKRA connector? The adapter that attaches to the back of the head unit is supplied for antenna, but it doesn't match that... I see things that look like they might fit on Amazon, though, going to order one ASAP and give it a try.

Hmmm, I might be missing which setting controls this, there doesn't seem to be one related that I can find, although what some of them do seems kind of counterintuitive.
I'm going to go check out your subreddit! Thanks!
The Seicane will included an AM/FM radio adapter for regular radio, but I already had the Metra 40-EU10 Antenna to Radio Adapter:

Thank you, we went back in and looked more closely. So it turns out my Eos actually has three different antenna systems, and the stock radio connected to them all in a diversity arrangement and switched between them as needed, apparently. One of them has a single Fakra connector (what plugs into the piece you posted), which is what we plugged into (except that we missed plugging the power wire back into the wiring harness to the CANBUS), but I found several posts related to other head units that said that the other pair of antennas, that are in a twin Fakra connector (two of those plugs side by side) actually works better (but it sounds like it isn't possible to use them all at the same time). So the next step will be to order an adapter from the twin Fakra to the plug on the head unit (sorry, I haven't hit ten posts so I can't link it) and in the meantime I'll see if the missing power wire makes things any better, it sounds like I was using the antenna that I was using, unpowered, when it's supposed to be a powered antenna....

Ownice K1 Initial Review

Here's an initial review for the Ownice K1 (2gb ram/ 16gb Rom android 8 version) and from what I can tell, the first one to appear in English.
Background: This is Ownice's new budget model. No built in 4G support, no DVD slot, 4 core processor, slightly lower internal components (Amplifier, Tuner), TFT screen.
I ordered it on the 11.11 sale for about $200 with DHL shipping and added another 9$ for an external Mic. I ordered the version customized for Ford Mondeo/Galaxy/ S-Max.
Also ordered from other vendors: Ownice TPMS system (has not arrived) , Huawei E8372 4G wingle (arrived shortly after the K1 was installed), and reverse camera that replaces license plate light
Ownice shipped it three days later and it arrived in LA four days after that. From there it was brought to Israel by my kind brother.
Initial Impressions: came well packaged with protective film on the screen. Construction seems good. This is a slim unit and nearly all the connectors are breakouts from proprietary pin-outs on the back.
Installation:
Installation into a 2013-14 S-Max was quite easy as it simply uses the same mounting holes as the OEM unit, and the included connector is wired for the Ford quadlock harness. That said, it included no documentation whatsoever.
1) Connect three rear break-out connections to the back (Quadlock harness, A/V in/out cables, External mic input) and plug the included canbus decoder into the harness
1a) Notice that on harness wiring there is a wire that has a locking connector in the middle that comes disconnected. Assume this is for the reverse camera and connect it
2) Connect quadlock, revers camera RCA. External Mic, GPS antenna, and radio antenna
2a) Notice that they did not include a correct antenna adapter, run to local car audio guy and overpay for an adapter
3) (Spend next six hours wiring in a reverse camera through hatchback (not so easy!)
4) Shove all the wiring behind the unit (plenty of room there) and screw it in, replace trim, voila.
Future items:
5*) 4G wingle arrived a day later so I have only used it with the K1 in hotspot mode, which works fine. I have not gotten around to attaching it directly via USB
6*)TPMS system ordered from DX.com has not arrived yet.
In Use: In the realm of chinese android head units it is no faint praise to say that a unit simply works as one would expect it to, and this unit really does just work 99% as it should. I'll only point out some highlights and a few small disappointments:
+Unit powers on as soon as key is in ignition, stays on after car is shut down until door is opened (just like OEM)
+The reverse camera comes on BEFORE the unit is fully booted (right after the splash screen) so no significant delay there (this was a very pleasant surprise)
+No need to attach extra reverse wiring from reverse camera to car wiring, reverse is already wired via quad-lock
+Steering wheel controls work as they did with OEM unit (but mode button cycles through all inputs, even if they are not installed)
+My existing BAFX bluetooth OBD2 connected fine and works with the included version of torque
+Sound quality with OEM speakers is fine, at least on par with OEM head unit (despite what I've read about ST TDA7388)
+External mic is sensitive enough to work installed in hidden OEM mic location (grill behind map light)
+GPS reception/accuracy is better than my phone's
+Screen splitting works, and is useful
+Push the right knob in and the screen goes blank
-Radio tuner is not as good as the oem unit (I expected this)
-Bluetooth popup to answer calls does not appear for whatsapp calls
-Touchscreen could be a tad more sensitive
-built in media player does not seem to support WMA (thanks to yahoo music (RIP) I have a lot of WMAs) so I mostly use VLC
-No printed manual, onboard manual app does not work, and I can't find any manual online, so it took some futzing and going through the C500 manual to figure a few things out.
That's about it. I don't spend that much time driving these days so haven't gotten around to exploring all the settings and features, but so far I'm quite satisfied.
I appreciate the review; some follow-up questions...
Please tell me if steering wheel controls (up/down track) work on all music apps or just the stock one. Also let me know if you hear any background clicks/pops/noise when WiFi is being accessed. How is the Bluetooth calling quality - can callers hear you ok? Finally can the stock radio and Bluetooth apps be used split screen?
Thanks!

Thanks for the answers. One more question, sorry. Does Ok Google work, and/or can you use Google to initiate a call just using voice or microphone button plus voice? Many units "understand" the request to call but fail to be able to put through the call.

Sorry for the delay in replying.
As far as OK google calls, since the head unit's Bluetooth functionality works as a microphone/speaker, when you run a google now command on the HU, it thinks you want to make a call using the HU, but it has no phone function of it's own, so it cannot place the call. What would be needed is a button on the HU that activates the phone's google now listening. I don't keep my phone in constant listening mode, so not sure how it would work in that situation. Hope that helps.
Here's a few more observations, not entirely good:
1) The steering wheel next and previous track buttons are reversed.
2) There is a problem resuming Bluetooth streaming from my phone. If you push the play button on the HU Bluetooth app after a restart it will freeze and force a reboot.
3) GPS reception is generally excellent with very quick fix, but occasionally for no apparent reason upon startup it will take 5 or so minutes.
4) Even disabling all of automatic time setting, the unit will inexplicably get an hour ahead when booted and then correct a few minutes later.
5) I can't figure out if there is a way to get the Huawei 4G USB router I bought to function as a modem or only as a hotspot.
Hi Doncres,
I've just finished installing my own Ownice K1/G10 unit for my Hyundai Santa Fe.
Installation was a little bit trickier since in order to use the car's original gps antenna, microphone and rear camera I had to cut some wires and change connectors, as well as installing a stepdown DC-DC converter to get the weird 6.5v power required by the original rear camera.
I've been playing a little bit myself with the unit and, given that I'm quite satisfied with it, I would like to know whether you experienced any of the following little annoying problems:
- handsfree call via bluetooth: remote party is always complaining about a small amount of echo
- general audio volume low even at maximum volume (+30), especially for bluetooth phone calls
- the bluetooth active call popup rectangle gets always in the way, even when the rear camera is triggered by the reverse gear, giving some troubles when parking the car and talking to the phone
- Netflix app not working: I had to install an old 2015 version targeting Android 4.4
- parking assistant lines on the rear camera view have wrong perspective angle in comparison to my camera's viewing angle, thus resulting in a projected trapezium rather than a projected rectangle (i.e. the lines are not parallel to actual parking lines); I know I can disable them, however I'd like to change their perspective angle to match the camera
I read somewhere that there are two hidden service menus on Ownice units: the first is accessible via car settings (the "1260" menu) and this works on my unit
The other should be accessible by dialling a specific string in the phone app, however it seems I cannot start the phone app since the K1/G10 comes with no 3G/4G hardware. Any idea on how to enter such menu?
Thanks,
Alberto

Hi, I'm not sure I can really help other than to confirm a few of the the issues.
-Don't think I have an echo issue, but there seems to be a delay until a caller first hears me.
- I get very good volume. I would assume this is an issue of whether the built in amp is a good match for the speakers. Could be an issue with the impedance.
-Yeah, the call button overlay is sometimes annoying, it can block nav screen as well and no way to hide
-I noticed that Netflix was no showing in the app store, but not a big use for me
-the camera I bought has built in guidelines so I disabled them.
-no idea bout the service menu
The only issues that really bother me are:
-the occasional GPS not acquiring satellites, which I now think may be from a defective antenna. I ordered a replacement and we'll see if that helps.
-the fact that if I have an app like stitcher playing, i then get in the car and it stops it when it connects to the BT, but when I go to the BT music app it will either resume fine or if I pres play it will crash the entire device and force a reboot. Mostly I just run streaming apps on the Unit so not much BT streaming anyway.
Also, my TPMS unit finally showed up 2 months after ordering it from DX.com. Looking forward to installing that some time in the next couple of weeks.
Hi.
I am newbie, and i may be wrong in posting the question.
I got 2 din touch Android for Nissan Murano 2018 - model K1, 2 / 16 GB. Ownice 8227L.
On the manufacturer's website, the model has not been supported by software updates for a long time.
Last owner tried to update it with different firmware versions, including those downloaded from this site, and from 4pda. initially did not save the software that was on it from the factory. Now - it has a version of Android installed in which the radio does not work. Everything works, sound files from usb card play, except the radio.
Help me please, where can I get the firmware on it to make the radio work?

No sound after HU wakes from sleep

I'm a newbie to this site so apols if I have contravened any site rules!
Hoping someone might be able to help. I bought a 12.3inch HU on AliExpress. Its model number is uis8581a2h10_Automotive, which I think is a FYT HU. It's coded specifically for BMW.
After a full boot everything on the HU works fine. But then if I stop the car, for example to grab something from a shop, when I start the car again the head unit starts up instantly but there's no sound despite Zlink5/Spotify appearing to run properly on the screen. The only option to get sound back is to reboot the head unit and wait for Zlink5 to reestablish a connection with my phone (a Galaxy S10). Interestingly though, even when the music fails to play through the speakers, if I press the microphone button, Google Assistant plays sound and can properly make a phone call played through the car's front left speaker.
Also, when I'm getting no sound after the HU wakes, if I switch to the DAB app, I can hear a millisecond of Spotify music before it cuts off, and then the DAB app also fails to play sound - although it too, like Zlink5/Sportify, responds properly onscreen. So the HU seem to be playing music after waking from sleep, but just not routing it to the amp.
Apparently this unit is supposed to output sound via an aux cable which plugs into the BMW stereo's aux port. However, my unit plays music through the speakers on the aux setting whether or not the aux cable is plugged in. Not sure if that's affecting things?
The final issue is that Zlink5 won't work with bluetooth and WLAN/hotspot at the same time. It switches off WLAN while connecting to my phone via Bluetooth. If I then enable WLAN and set up a hot spot, Zlink5 either switches WLAN off and reconnects via Bluetooth, or else it will connect to WLAN, after which music pauses every second or so.
The sellers have sent me an MCU update file, which I have applied, and I have also tried every option in the HU settings for Car Aux Switch Mode. I can't think of anything else to try.
Can anyone advise whether these problems are likely to be software or hardware related? And has anyone any ideas how they might be resolved?
Many thanks!
In regards to not being able to use Wi-Fi and Bluetooth together when you use zlink it uses the wifi to connect to you phone in the background. If you manually turn it back on it will disconnect from your phone. My advice would be to put a SIM card in your unit.

Thanks Deadeye, that explains that one, and also explains why it eats my phone's battery

Many thanks for getting in touch Marchnz. The MCU is ZLH_BMH220425A_8581. The original version was ZLH_BM_OS_1.37, but the seller has since provided an update to ZLH_BM_OS_1.53 which has fixed the problem.

HI there, I've found the update but it's 1.4Gb or so. Can you send me a DM with your email and I'll send it to you via Wetransfer? Obviously its use would be at your own risk, as I'm not sure whether it will work across different manufacturers/companies.
