I hope you can help with this problem.
I replaced my Moto G4 Plus battery last night and plugged it into the original Motorola charger (different USB cable). The white LED at the bottom of the phone blinks but the screen just flashes between a white lightening bolt icon, a black screen and the blue screen with the red Moto logo (the screen you get as if it is going to boot).
If I hold the power and volume down buttons together, I can get to the fastboot menu, which says "battery OK (charging)" in green letters, but choosing power down doesn't seem to work, and choosing recovery menu doesn't do anything either. At the bottom of the screen, it says "connect usb data cable" but I don't know what that means.
I've tried leaving it on the fastboot menu but eventually, after a few minutes, the phone screen just starts flashing as before.
I've tried plugging the phone into my laptop to charge instead and it just has the blinking white light without anything on the screen (screen is just black) but I can't get to the fastboot menu or anything. I left it plugged into my laptop overnight and this morning, it seemed to be on the cycle of flashing screens but went back to just a black screen with white blinking LED.
I've been googling for hours to try to find a solution but so far, haven't had any luck. I've tried using different chargers, different USB cables but still nothing.
I can't get the screen showing the battery percentage whatever I do.
So is the battery just dead - might the new battery be faulty?
As a potentially related issue - a few days ago, I took my phone to a local repair shop for the USB port to be replaced as I couldn't get the phone to charge at all. I collected the phone (which was now the dirtiest it had even been in it's life and had a small crack in the screen protector that had not been there previously) and it had been charged. When I dropped the phone off, I had mentioned I was concerned that the battery might be bulging but was told it was OK. After taking the phone home, the battery life remained poor so I googled whether it was possible to change the battery. After ordering a replacement battery and trying to fit it last night, I discovered that more than half of the screws holding the cover plate to the phone were missing, 2 of the remaining screws were the wrong type (philips instead of T3), the black cover was missing from the charging port/vibration motor, the copper tape was missing from the display connector and there was no longer any tape over the battery/battery connector wires.
Needless to say, I am not happy with the repair shop and at this point, I wish I had not bothered trying to fix my phone. All I wanted was to get it working again so I can use it to store my mp3s on and use it as a music player/emergency phone.
If anyone can offer some help, I'd be very grateful as I just don't know what to do now.
Go to the repair shop and get them to fix what they screwed up ie missing parts if you know they are responsible. Lean on them, at least get a refund.
Any battery swelling is a failure.
Stop beating a dead horse... at some point it's not worth throwing good money at it. Limited internal/expandable memory, ram and an LCD display all scream that it's upgrade time. Of course you could get the same model again as they are still available.
Just back from spending over 2 hours at the repair shop. They don't know where the missing parts are and will "ring round" to try to find them. If they can't find them, they'll try to order replacements but I'm not holding my breath.
I have upgraded my phone but since my Moto G4 Plus phone was previously working well, I wanted to change its use from my primary phone to be a music player and emergency phone. So getting it fixed was much cheaper than buying a large capacity mp3 player.

Can't find the DAC that the 3.5mm jack uses, is a high resolution 24 bit output?
The bluetooth on it lacks high resolution codecs support.
256gb max SD card support which is enough space for mp3's but .wav or higher resolution is better. It's a shame you were forced into this position but $hit happens. Been there, done that and it does suck. Very time consuming even if you throw money at it.
Weight your options for a best outcome. Stand alone Mp3 player? Forget that as there are many capable Androids that can fill the roll in the $100-200 price range even less with 24 bit DACs and bt LDAC, Apt X, Apt X HD and SSC codec support.
You got a lot of research to do... as you have a lot of options. Then you need to decide what's best from you and gives the best bang for the buck.
My solution which is near perfect for me and serves as a media server was the Note 10+, a 1tb of V30 rated SD card, Buds+ and Poweramp as the player. I had other considerations as it serves as my primary phone and is used for all my internet activities. It supersedes my laptop now.
Currently, I have a couple of old ipods but the memory on them is very small and I can't fit all my mp3s on them. I appreciate .wav files are better quality but I'm happy with my mp3s as they take up much less space!

I see what you're saying about my Moto G4 Plus and I don't doubt that most other people would be of the same opinion.
All I was trying to do was to give my beloved and well looked-after Moto a new life as a music player (which I need) and save some money into the bargain by investing a little in the project.
I'm really sad that it's now in the state it's in and am totally infuriated with the cowboys masquerading as a repair shop in my town. They failed to see that even if they give me a full refund, my phone is now missing parts that were all present and correct when I gave it to them in good faith to fix. Of course hindsight is a wonderful thing but I wish wish wish I hadn't crossed that threshold and trusted them.
Back to the problem at hand though - I've found other people's posts who seemed to have the same problem and I just think there surely must be a clever person out there who's fixed this or can explain what's going on.
Incidentally, I took the opportunity to ask the assistant in the repair shop about the battery - he took the phone to the corner of the room and plugged it into something that I couldn't see, then saidd the battery was ok. But after explaining what I ought to check (the battery connector) and then me opening the phone up myself to show him the connection (and point out the missing parts), he then said it could be a problem with the battery. So I took that to mean he hadn't a clue after all and given the poor service I had already had from them, it was as much as I expected.

Okay here's my fun little scenario that I searched for and hadn't come across anyone with the same scenario. Phone was working fine one day and next it would only display a white screen, thought something went wrong with the software. Tried a reset, tried a hard reset, tried a flash started getting some screen showing and then distorting and whiteing out also on startup would get crackled sound. Tried a few more resets and so on. Removed the battery for 3 seconds-20mins-8plus hours still having a problem. Distortion gets worse when pushing the battery in the back it seems and will eventually just go to white screen. Now I had bought a new battery recently and just for kicks threw it in, seemed to eliminate my problems. Except now as I just for kicks again am charging my old battery in the cradle along with the phone and the new battery it seems to be having similar issue although it hasn't been nearly as bad as before. Now I just took the "bad" battery off the charger and it seems to be just fine in the cradle at this moment, nevermind it's flickering again. Is more poor little Hermes on it's death bed, please tell me no. I paid $200 on it being used from a company who only warranties it for 14 days, I am almost at 30 now. I bought an warranty with it being used and all however they wont help me untill I reach 60 days I guess so I may be out of luck for 30 days before I might get it fixed or my money back. Sucks too because I switched to the $40 data plan with AT&T about 5 days ago and now I guess will be paying for something I can't really use. Okay it seems as though with random pressure on the back seems to cause it. I'm leaning towards some sort of a battery contact issue perhaps? What should I do to clean/fix the contacts?
For those that wonder why I just seemed to rant about my broken phone and seemingly figured out the problem on my own and are wondering why I am still posting all of it the answer is simple: To benefit someone else who may be experienceing the same problem or who may read it and have the problem down the road they will know what they should do. the screen issue is known to be caused by the D-pad connector coming undone
Okay I had run into that as a possibility however would that affect the sound to make it crackle? Also in experimenting some more this morning with the "old" battery in place it seems to be much much more sensitive to pressure, almost to the point of holding it in the palm of your hand causes the screen to go nutty and wash out to white screen and come back etc.. However with the new battery in its much more stable and I need to apply more pressure in order for it to reproduce these symptoms. I know you've been a member for longer than me and you also work for AT&T however my gut feeling is something else may be the culprit here. I tried recording a video using my backup phone last night except I couldn't seem to get it uploaded to show what the screen is doing. Oh well I really want use of the phone but I also don't want to void the warranty, namely my extra warranty which I can't file a claim for the next month.
Lets say I am sick and tired of my 8525 turning off on it's on randomly during the day and I have loaded 10 different roms all the way back to the stock one, I have ran it with NO aftermarket programs, I have replaced the battery, and I have added support to the sim card to make sure it isn't losing contact and still the phone turns off randomly on it's on.
Sometimes I have noticed that it will turn itself off if I slide the keyboard out (maybe 3 times out of 100 turn offs), but 97% of the time it will do it on it's on sitting on the desk untouched.
If I was going to take my phone apart, is there any ideas or general consensus to what parts might be causing the phone to turn itself off? Should I get a new sim card maybe?
Really sick and tired of my buddy with an Iphone throwing this bug in my face telling me what crap HTC is as well as missing calls.
If the phone is turning all the way off, over and over, then send it in for a replacement. If you mean the screen is just turing off after a certain amount of time, you can adjust that under: "Settings->System (tab)->Power->Advanced->then uncheck Turn off device if not used for x minutes. See if that helps, or maybe its just ur phone and you need a replacement. I sent mine in to ATT and got one back after my screen stopped turning on"white screen of death", heh. So it could just be a hardware issue that you cannot really solve urself...
The phone is turning all the way off on it's on. I have to boot it back up like I had just installed a battery or something.
I am out of warranty and do not want to pay for a refurbished phone since this is my third phone from them during the warranty already (and this ones been the best till now). I would rather someone tell me the board/part and I take it apart and fix it myself. I have the tools, the instruction manual in PDF someone posted a while back, a website with almost every internal part for sale, and experience taking small devices apart (ipods and such) and replacing items, I just want to know if anyone knew of which part could most likely be the part causing something like this before I start replacing things blindly. I plan to go ahead and take it apart and check ribbon cables since I want to replace the whole housing anyway.
Unfortunately, my D900 has the same problem with yours, it turned off when i just sending messages or just touching the screen, and my replacement battery is already on the flight, when i get it, i will test it again. Hopeful, i can get a sweat result~~
Mine doesn't seem to do it when it is in use. I have had to get in the habbit of looking at the LED on the phone to make sure it is still turned on. Gets real annoying trying to say the Iphone isn't all that people think, but then have this little problem and the fact I am on my third HTC product in the year time frame. But the others died within 30 days, this one has lasted 10 months thats why I want to keep it.
Well I think I figured it out. I took it apart and it looks like the black box that has the battery connectors to it and is soldered to the main board has broken loose. I am trying to fix it, but does anyone know how much the main board is if I need to replace it?
Hello, I will start by saying despite my aged condition i have only recently (in the last week) been seduced to the ownership of any sort of mobile phone. I have one that works fine. But in my investigations a friend offered and gave me a XDA exec (O2) mainly to stop me moaning about the silly way text messages are entered with out a Qwerty keyboard. Unfortunately the phone seem to be dead. Or at least in a coma (as it has some life signs).
The symptoms are, White screen, not much else, odd times my eight year old got the keyboard lights on and thats about it, plain white screen. I have investigated the net for answers and tried. Reset (power, back light and reset), taking out battery and replacing, taking out the battery over night, i investigated 02's web site which i found of very little help, the user manual there etc presupposes some sort of information on the screen ! I seized on the idea that a Rom Upgrade might help but all links to that i have found are dead.
I installed Activcync to my PC and the phone syncs up allowing me to see that there is indeed things on it the windows files etc. Which gave me hope that it isn't totally dead.
So any suggestions? can i do anything with this impressive looking paperweight?

From your description I would say you have a hardware fault regarding your screen.
Either the cable is broken, not correctly connected or the LCD itself has a defect.
What let's me conclude that is:
- you say you will get a white screen: this means the backlight is working
- you say ActiveSync will recognize the phone and you can browse its contents: this means that the device is working (except for the screen) and that it is not like stuck in the bootloader, or so
- you say your daughter managed to get the keyboard lights on: this means they are working... this, by the way, only happens when the device is in the dark and thats probably why you did not manage to do it yourself
From now, your options are:
- sell the device as broken and get up to 100 Euro on eBay for it
- buy a working Universal at eBay, at prices starting at 140 Euro (better condition will cost more)
or
- get the PDF that explains how to disassemble the device
- check if all cables are properly connected
- check if there is something you can (and know howto) repair
and eventualy
- buy a new display, which will cost 100 Euro or more
So to tell the truth, the easiest option is to actually sell the phone as broken and get a second hand one, which is not broken...
Or get a second hand one (not broken) and keep yours for spare parts.

So... My Transformer has a bit of a bug, where when I am charging it or the charger is plugged (separated or in the dock), the touchscreen would become unresponsive unless I also touch the metal of the Transformer with my hand simultaneously.
Now, that Tablet is about half a year old and it suddenly happened from one day to the other.
Naturally, I researched it first, and I found that a few people had similar problems. Suggestions ranged from completely discharging the battery to updating the Tablet - I tried them all, they all didn't work.
So, I send in a request to ASUS support - in the UK, and after a bit back and forth (like asking what version the Tablet was running at), I was referred to their exchange and repair-service.
So I contacted them, and it seemed to work out quite well. The tablet was collected and I included the charger as well as a description of the issue.
At some point I got an answer - in polish, for whatever reason - that told me the tablet was repaired and sent out. A bit weird that it was in polish, but oh well, I can deal with it.
So I finally get it back, wrapped up very nicely. With a little note (in English this time) saying that no issue was found. Awesome. Maybe you could've informed me via Mail before just... Sending it back with that note. Maybe I could've helped them to reproduce the error.
Needless to say, as soon as I plugged the tablet in, the error was back. They reset the Firmware tho. Nice guess.
So yeah, stupid support, not helpful at all. I will consider that in future purchases. -_-

I don't know what I COULD do to make this happen... I mean, there's not too much you can do wrong with plugging in a cable.
have you tried pluggin it in at a friends house?
It could be static build up. Perhaps your house has carpet that builds up static when the air gets dry from running the heater. Since the screen operates by capacitance from your fingers vs. pressure, this could be an issue if you are holding more than the expected charge. Do other people experience this issue with the device? How about if you use it in different locations?
My Nook Color will double or sometimes 10X enter a keypress when I use it when it is connected to the charger. The fix is to not use it on the charger.
Did you try to change the charger plugged in the wall socket ?
I mean turn around.
It sounds silly but I read about people get a little "shock" if they touch the tablet when the charger plugged in, depending how it is put in the wall socket.
Maybe you will see a difference.
I had to send mine after less than a month having it because something appeared between the backlight and the screen.
I got it back one week later with a dead pixel right in the center (and lightbleed) and left speaker not working.
I sent it back and got it back two weeks later with working screen and speaker but a lot of lightbleed.
I then gave up on sending it back again and learned to live with the backlight bleed which is present at least one third of the circonference of the screen.
So I mean yeah they will fix it to a degree but don't expect perfection...

I acquired an HTC one M9 to replace my dead M8 that I caused (funny story at the end). The headphone jack was wonky, and since I had disassembled and reassembled an iPhone 4S in the past I thought I could try my hand at this. The hardest part was getting the M8 out of its metal shell, and I think that's when I may have damaged something. I was able tot get it back together, but it will not power on.
I can plug it in to a charger and I see the screen come on showing that it charges and that there is a healthy power level to begin with. I can no longer find the plastic power button though, so I have to use a screwdriver tip or a spudger to press the sensor to turn it on. I've held it down for 30 seconds, 1 min, held it and the volume down button for the same amount of time, and tried the same with the volume up button, but no luck. I keep the shell off of it when I attempt to revive it, if that makes a difference (slightly easier to reach the power on button at the top). I can possibly put it back in the metal case and try to hold down all three buttons, but it's a ***** to get back out of the case.
I remember reading a few threads here or elsewhere regarding the ability to jump start a dead phone or android device, perhaps it was a Nexus 7. Is there anything like that in the development package or a standalone program where I can connect it via USB and jump start it that way? Or is it pretty much toast at this point? I see replacement power buttons and power button boards on eBay for under $20, but with my (lack of) skills I believe I'll just damage it more. What are your thought and what are my options?
(Funny story). I purchased my HTC One M8 from an eBay seller, yet when I got it, the power button was not on top but on the right. I'm thinking, "okay, didnt know I'll have to start looking for alternate M8 cases...". When I called Sprint to activate it and provided the information, they said it was actually an M9! So the reviews aren't as favorable towards the M9 as they are the M8, but I love it nonetheless. And of course if anything needs replaced I'm just going to take it to a brick-and-mortar shop to have them do it, save my spudgers for working on laptops.

Unbelievable i pretty much have the same problem since yesterday.
Ok i try to write this as short as possible.
My Headphone Jack was also broken so i bought a new USB/HJ/MIC part.
After putting it in i wasnt able to load my phone anymore with the new piece so i tried back the original one with the dead HJ and it worked again. So i let it inside, contacted the seller to send me a new one. Which is not here yet, but he doesnt want the first one he sent me back, which is quite fortunate.
However yesterday i dropped my phone on high grass - it was completely dead so i couldnt call it using another phone thus i wasnt able to find it for like 1hour, it was dark, and very cold(-2°C) and also wet and i think this is how i broke my M8. But im not sure yet. I used a flashlight and apparently found it after some help of a friendly lady.
When i was back home it didnt start. Not even when charging. Then i thought myself i will try the new part again with the "broken" USB Jack and pretty funny it somehow works. BUT: Charging it turns on the screen instantly, gets me into recovery (always did that, never startet directly into CM13 which is use) but after like 15seconds it just turns off and starts again, showing me the dead battery icon at first, then the recovery. Im not able to turn it on using the power button (didnt loose mine ) it just turns it off because it starts by itself when chagrer is plugged in. I dont know what to do now: i dont have enough time inside my recovery (CWM) to reset it or something and im not really sure if it is a software or hardware problem but i speculated its the battery which is broken now. (?) However when i put the charger in to make it start, then pull it is able to hold itself for the same duration as if i was charging, but only sometimes. This really confuses me.
I dont think i broke mine during the repetetive change of the part, but im not able to exclude it in my troubleshooting. I know i didnt help you at all probably i just wanted to share my very same problem because no one else responded and i might also get help.
